Marker honoring Gold Star heroes, families OK’d BY TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL – The Carroll County Board had its regularly scheduled June meeting June 21 and opened with a presentation by Patti Smith, founder of the Illinois-based nonprofit organization America’s Gold Star Families, and National Gold Star chairman for National Garden Club. Smith attended the meeting to share information about Gold Star Markers. The Gold Star Families Memorial Marker Program pays tribute to families of American servicemen and women who died while serving in the military. At the height of the Iraqi War, the Smith family had two sons deployed to Iraq. She and her husband kept two Blue Star banners hanging in their windows, signifying the double deployment. She remembers it as a time of incredible duress. “We say that when someone loses their life in service of their country, their star turns to gold,” Smith said. “Blue star markers have been around for 70 years and are a continuing project of the National Garden Club. “The markers honor our Armed Forces. They’re called Memorial Markers and are along the highways

and rest stops all across the nation.” She recalls seeing one of the markers and thinking that with simple color and verbiage changes, Gold Star Families could be honored. “I contacted the National Garden Club, told them about my idea, and they responded enthusiastically,” Smith said. “As you can imagine, there were a lot of hoops to jump through to implement the Gold Star Marker idea on a national level, but we moved forward and in 2015 the idea passed at the club’s national convention.” Now, just 3 years into the project, there are 32 Gold Star Markers scattered across the nation, with more on the way. “The project is catching on, and more orders are coming in frequently,” she said. “Frankly, as a former resident of Savanna, Illinois, I would be honored if we could place a Gold Star Marker in Mount Carroll.” Smith said there is only one other marker in Illinois, and putting one in Mount Carroll would establish the area as a leader and a trendsetter. “The cost for a marker is about $1,500, and if you are familiar at all with the cost of granite markers you know that that’s a fraction of what it would cost to honor these families,” Smith said. “They are very durable

and will last, making this project very doable.” County Administrator Mike Doty raised the question of fundraising to cover project costs. “We’ve actually gone very slowly raising funds at this point, because we wanted to be absolutely sure we could move forward with the project,” said this area’s marker project coordinator, Kevin Powers. “But, in just telling the story to a few people, we have pledges for $600, and that’s just from casual conversations with just a handful of people.” He said they are not asking for money from the county. “We want money from people who want to donate, that want to help and want to contribute,” Powers said. “We’ll get this done. I’m not worried about that.” Smith said typically the county would need to establish a timeline because once they place the order there will be a certain number of weeks for delivery, and she recommended timing the delivery date with a dedication ceremony which would be a one-time event. “A dedication ceremony can be

as simple or elaborate as you want to make it,” she said. “I provided Kevin with details for a sample dedication and would be happy to continue working with him to see it to fruition.” Board Chairman Kevin Reibel said he sees the marker as a real plus for the county, and he thinks the marker would be a welcome addition to the Veterans Memorial on the courthouse lawn. The board voted unanimously to approve and proceed with the Gold Star Marker project. In other business, State’s Attorney Scott Brinkmeier told the board he has received a new grant from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office permitting him to fill the post of victim’s assistant. The board approved a Sign Setback Variance requested by the Sandburr golf and hotel facility, and approved reappointment of Jane Law and Jenny Bergman to the Board of Health. The next Carroll County Board meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. July 5 =in the Small Courtroom in the County Courthouse.

Carroll Relay for Life breaks $40,000 PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF MOUNT CARROLL – Carroll and JoDaviess County Cancer Relay for Life teams raised more than $40,000 June 9 at this year’s American Cancer Society Relay for Life, at Mount Carroll Church of God. Bev Lundquist with the Relay for Life committee said that more than 400 names of cancer survivors and those who died from cancer were

MORRISON – Kenneth S. “Ken” Marburger, 60, of Morrison, formerly of Sabula, Iowa, passed away Monday, June 18, 2018, at Morrison Community Hospital. Ken was born Nov. 28, 1957, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Alvin and Maxine (Huebner) Marburger. He attended East Central Community High School in Miles, Iowa, and graduated with the Class of 1977. Ken proudly served his country from 1977 to 1981 as a sergeant in the Air Force. Ken married Lori Brundage on June 21, 2002, in Davenport, Iowa.

Ken worked as a substation technician for Exelon in Cordova for 32 years, retiring in 2013. After he retired, Ken and Lori began wintering in Florida and Texas. He enjoyed Texas most of all, and was excited for their trip this year. Ken loved the outdoors, especially driving his John Deere tractor, cutting down trees, mowing grass, plowing snow and making trails. After a long day working outside, Ken and Lori would ride the trails on their Gator and golf cart. At the end of the day, Ken valued spending time sitting around the campfire, telling stories with his family and friends. Ken will be dearly missed by his wife, Lori; stepchildren, Jason Werner of Davenport, Iowa, Denise (Brian) Schimmers of Greenville, Wisconsin, and Deyenna (Carl) D’Ambrose of South Lebanon,

Ohio; four stepgrandchildren, Jake and Sam Schimmers, and Tyler and Nicole D’Ambrose; his parents, Alvin and Maxine Marburger of Sabula; a brother, Ron (Sally) Marburger of Bryant, Iowa; a sister, Linda (Paul) Baker of Sabula; and nephews, Joseph Marburger of Rowley, Iowa, Josh Marburger of Chicago and Tom (Sara) Leonard of Eldridge, Iowa. Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life service will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Sabula VFW, 1001 Broad St. Law-Jones Funeral Homes is handling arrangements. PC grad honored at Upper Iowa FAYETTE, Iowa – Clayton Lieb of Pearl City was recognized as a recipient of the Zecha-McCauley Scholarship at Upper Iowa University. Lieb was honored during the 2018 Scholarships and Awards Recognition Banquet.

Local students on spring dean’s list at Luther College DECORAH, Iowa – A number of local students were among those on the spring dean’s list at Luther College. Gabby Betzer, a first-year student from Milledgeville was named to the list, as was Allison Houldson, a freshman from Morrison. Evan Lobdell, a junior from Sterling also was on the dean’s list. Four students from Freeport were honored, including Jacqueline Krawczyk, a senior, Natalie Ludolph, a junior, Katelin Parkinson, a sophomore, and freshman Allisa Sommers. The Chadwick Milledgeville FFA chapter received their State Award and were invited to attend the National FFA convention to judge. In addition, both Delana and Payton Erbsen won their dairy handling events and also received their state awards. Delana won in the middle school dairy handling contest while Payton won the High School contest and will also be competing at the National Contest in October. Finally, Rachel Scidmore received her high individual award for dairy judging. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR To the editor: A big thank you to all those responsible for the Lanark Blood Drive being a success this year! We collected 30 pints, including two of which were “double reds” donors. We know that there are many opportunities in the area for the local blood donor to donate blood, and we are especially happy that you chose to come to Lanark and donate your precious life-saving blood to the American Red Cross. Thank you to all those donors giving of their precious blood so that others in need will have it available when they need it. Of those people who came in, tried to give and were deferred, we say a special thank

you, and to try again next year. We had several volunteers who gave of their time and talents. Lack of compassion in America today To the editor: What has the country come to? Almost every day we are being lied to. Republicans say they are compassionate. If they vote for congressmen and senators that back the policies of President Donald Trump, they are lying to you. Do you agree that children should be taken from their families? Some are being placed in cages, are some being sold? The ones that are responsible claim they do not know where all of them are being held. Is

this compassion? Where is the compassion for our country? Donald Trump, with the help of his party, has alienated our friendly countries, and has lined up with our countries enemies: Russia, China, North Korea, and don’t forget where the terrorists were from that blew up the World Trade Center. If the Republican senators and congressmen back the policies of Donald Trump, they are also friends of our enemies. They believe it is OK to break up families, and put children, some only months old, in cages. Are they compassionate? I don’t think so. This is my opinion, and I don’t like being lied to.

Freeport-based bike ride to help fight cancer FREEPORT – FHN Memorial Hospital will organize a Gran Fonda Tour against Cancer group of bicycle rides June 30, all of which start at 8 a.m. A family fun ride will be available along the Jane Addams Trail. A 30-mile trail or road ride, and 50- and 75-mile ride options will leave from at Tutty’s Crossing Trailhead, 250 E. Stephenson St. Instead of a registration fee, donations will be accepted to the FHN Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center at FHN in Freeport. A route guide and safety card will be provided. One staffed rest stop will be available in Orangeville. The ride’s founder is Dave Fonda, who started the ride in 2007 and died this year. Gazette boys team made it known from the opening tip Thursday that a fourth straight defeat in the Sauk Valley Media All-Star Basketball Classic was not going to happen. Fulton’s Tyler Bruggenwirth started the game with a layup, Milledgeville’s Kyle Ottens connected on a jumper, and Rock Falls’ Austin Meiners and Fulton’s Cody Sanderson each hit a 3-pointer. The quick flurry of points set the tone in a win over the Telegraph squad. Bruggenwirth provided the game’s final exclamation point. The 6-foot-5 forward slammed home an alley-oop from Sanderson after the speedy point guard swiped a steal. The Gazette team held a 46-32 advantage at intermission, and a 61-45 lead after three. Bruggenwirth split his 20-point night evenly, scoring 10 points in each half and adding six rebounds.

Balance on offense was the key for the Gazette side, as each player scored at least five points. Petros had 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals, while Eastland’s Ethan Christians pitched in 13 points and six boards. Milledgeville’s Cade Schave scored all 10 of his points in the second half, and notched a double-double with 10 rebounds for the Gazette team. Schave’s former running mate Kyle Ottens stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals. Sanderson finished with seven points, four rebounds and a gamehigh eight assists. Bruggenwirth, a future Illinois Central Cougar, was selected as the game’s MVP, as his point total represented the best from a Fulton player at the Classic since Chris Hebeler scored 27 points in 2002. That wasn’t all for Bruggenwirth. He also won the slam dunk competition, the first Steamer to do so since the late Eric Ottens won it in 2001. All it took for Bruggenwirth to advance to the two-man finals were a pair of two-handed jams, racing in from the left wing. Polo graduate Reid Taylor also advanced after making a single throw-up dunk.

Milledgeville’s Mady Frederick hit a dagger of a 3-pointer that made the score 39-23 with 2:11 to go in the third quarter. Frederick, who led the Gazette with 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists, noted it was just a matter of the team getting more familiar with each other after halftime. Soon to play at Wisconsin-River Falls, Frederick stamped her name in the Classic history book five times. The MVP of the Gazette’s 57-37 win over the Telegraph, Frederick led her team with 11 points, three 3-pointers, nine rebounds and six assists. No Milledgeville player in the Classic had put up such numbers. Frederick tied a Classic girls record for most 3-pointers with Dixon and NIU alum Tara Michels in 2004, and was one assist shy of the single-game mark shared by Sterling’s Amber Cox and Dixon’s Holly Nicklaus. Her 11 points was one better than fellow Missiles alum Keali Engelkens’ 10 in 2010. BOYS BASKETBALL Zumdahl named Eastland boys basketball coach Tyler Zumdahl, a 2009 Eastland High School graduate, will take over head coaching duties for the Cougars. The Eastland Board of Education approved Zumdahl for the position on Wednesday, replacing longtime head coach Tony Dunlap, who was not renewed by the Board for the position last month. Zumdahl, who has been the head junior varsity coach for the past 2 years, also has coaching experience in the Lewistown and Monmouth United school districts. As a junior, Zumdahl helped lead the

If you qualify, you can apply for the Benefits Access Program, formerly Circuit Breaker, and receive a discount on your license plate sticker. Income guidelines per year are: for one – $27,610; and for two – $36,635. The age requirement is 65 or disabled. Also if you have applied before please check with us to see if it is that time of the year to reapply for your license plate discount. Transportation Carroll County Transportation now has three buses and six vans, all wheelchair accessible. CCT provides transportation for citizens of Carroll County, for meals, medical appointments, shopping, and errands throughout Carroll County, and will make trips to Freeport, Sterling, and Clinton, Iowa. We also have added medical appointment trips to Monroe, Wisconsin, and Rockford with a 3-day notice. If you need a ride, call 815-244-0011 at least 48 hours in advance to schedule your trip. For shopping trips, there is a 5-bag limit due to space issues. The service is supported by your donations to help offset the unfunded expenses, which continue to increase daily We provide this service to assist those who no longer drive or would rather have someone else do the driving. AARP Defensive Driving Class July 23-24 An AARP Defensive Driving class will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, July 23, and Tuesday, July 24, at the Carroll County Senior Center, 306 N. Main St., Mount Carroll. This 8-hour course, instructed by Arlyn Thomson, teaches how a person can become a more efficient and safer driver as the effects of aging cause changes to

long-time habits. Completion of the course may entitle the driver to a discount in auto insurance premiums for a period of 3 years, but check with your insurance company to verify. Madison trips for veterans Carroll County Transit and the Veterans Administration have opened up the days we can provide transportation to the Madison VA Medical Center. Seniors Around the County The Table The Great River Outreach Table is part of the Great River Outreach Center in Savanna and offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the former Chestnut Park School, 926 Viaduct Road, south of town on state Route 84. In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church, 216 S. Main St. Any age is welcome. Donations are accepted but not required. The food is brought to Mount Carroll on Wednesday. Volunteers are involved in this endeavor. Why eat alone? Consider joining the group often!

Are You Turning 65? Do you need help understanding Medicare A, B, C and

D? Then come and see us at the Senior Center. We will help make this time easier for you. Turning 65 can be very confusing with all the information you receive in the mail about which Medicare D Plan to take or which supplemental to get. If you are about to turn 65 and have questions, stop by and see our SHIP Counselors, Deb Connor and Karen Holm, and we can help you sort through the confusion. Also remember to stop at the Carroll County Courthouse to complete your Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption application and affidavit. When you turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare, the best time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period. Your IEP includes the 3 months before, the month of, and the 3 months following your 65th birthday. If you enroll in Medicare during this time, you will avoid late enrollment penalties. The date when your Medicare coverage begins depends on when you enroll during your IEP. For your coverage to begin as soon as possible, it is best to enroll in the first 3 months of your IEP. Your Medicare coverage will then go into effect starting the month you turn 65. To enroll in Medicare, please stop by the Senior Center and we can do this for you. It is important to be proactive and take the steps to enroll during your IEP. If you miss your IEP, you may be limited to specific times when you can enroll in Medicare in the future, and you may face a penalty for late enrollment, resulting in higher premiums. Wayne Becker is a new driver for Carroll County Transit. Wayne was born and raised in Carroll County and a semi-retired farmer.

What do you do with your old cellphones? Carroll County Senior Center has a donation box for old and broken cellphones. We recycle them by sending them to a company that refurbishes them for emergency 911 phones in areas devastated by disasters and for sale to low income persons. There is one box at the Senior Center now. If the program goes well, we will increase the number of boxes and place them in other areas around the county. If you know of anyone looking to get rid of old cellphones, ask them to drop them off at the Carroll County Senior Center during our regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center. Senior Center Gift Shop The Gift Shop at the Senior Center has very unique gifts handmade by talented volunteers working throughout Carroll County. It is open from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Bingo Bingo will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, and Tuesday, July 17, at the Senior Center. Bingo is held at the Senior Centeron the first and third Tuesday of each month from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Bingo is played with nickels and dimes, so make sure and bring some of your extra change as sometimes there are “big” winners. As I stated last month, it’s not too early to be thinking about “Open Enrollment” which starts Oct. 15 and goes until Dec. 7.We are taking appointment for that time frame, as we fill up rather quickly. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide an important service This is the 50th anniversary of the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, and more than 2 million taxpayers have the peace of mind that comes from knowing they received every deduction they earned. Refunds can serve as a lifeline for many older adults, and communities benefit as well. The Tax-Aide work is so important and wouldn’t be available without the service of our many volunteer workers. Illinois District 6, comprised of Dixon, Oregon, Morrison, Sterling,

Mount Carroll, and Thomson, served 2,073 clients. Carroll County served 390, Mount Carroll 311 and Thomson 79. Hang up! It’s a scam. Scam artists may try to steal your personal information by calling you and asking for your current Medicare Number. Medicare will never call uninvited and ask you to give personal information or money to get your new Medicare Number or card.. Remember: Your new Medicare card will automatically come to you in the mail. You don’t need to do anything, as long as your address is up-to-date with the Social Security Administration. If you need to update or verify your address, visit your My Social Security account.

his past week, a few of our directors and I ventured into Bloomingdale to meet with our adopted legislator, state Rep. Christine Winger. This provides us a great opportunity to see what issues she has in her district. It was a great day spent. Once we finally got in there, with all the heavy rains, we had a beautiful day. We started at one of their parks. We learned how the park district was able to pass a referendum that had been voted down many times.The goal of the referendum was to improve the district’s facilities.They had quite the marsh in one of their parks. They now have a great wetland area, on which they have worked hard to make it not an eyesore. They also put in new baseball diamonds, which have drawn in many tournaments and add to the economy. We then enjoyed lunch, while we discussed the issues they face in there. Noise from O’Hare is a

Even many of their employees are making the drive from Indiana or Wisconsin and fighting traffic every day vs. living in Illinois. Again, it certainly was a great day in the burbs. Rep. Winger is looking forward to being able to come out and visit Carroll County again in late August.

Regular oil changes and tire rotations make all the difference, ... and if you don’t drive your car for months, it might have trouble starting when you turn the key. Giving your body the wrong fuel and not taking it out for some regular activity can also cost you more in future “medical repairs.” Conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, low back pain, and even depression can be improved or even prevented. Diet and exercise have also been shown to help prevent some forms of dementia and certain cancers. Losing 5 percent to 10 percent of your body weight can dramatically lower your risk of developing diabetes, which then lowers your risk of developing heart disease. Strengthening your hip and leg muscles helps support the joints in your lower body, reducing the risk for developing arthritis. “Thirty minutes of moderate activity 5 or more days per week can make a huge positive difference in blood sugar control, lowered blood pressure, and improved blood circulation.” The American College of Sports Medicine recommends 150 minutes per week of moderate activity, such as walking or other rhythmic cardiovascular exercise. This breaks down to approximately 20 to 30 minutes of activity per day and can be performed in 10 minute “chunks” throughout your morning and afternoon. As people age, many of their reasons for visiting a physical therapist involve problems with their knees or shoulders. Knee pain often is the result of weak hip muscles that don’t adequately control the joints of the leg during walking or stair climbing. Over time, weak hip muscles can cause stress on the knees that may lead to soft tissue injury and arthritis. A good activity to try at home is simply standing on one leg for a short peri-

od of time. Single leg standing not only improves one’s balance, but strengthens hip muscle. Weakness in the shoulders and upper back, along with poor shoulder posture, can result in degeneration and tearing of the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is a complex set of muscles and tendons designed to stabilize the shoulder joint, and if torn, will likely lead to physical therapy or surgery. Strengthening muscles around the knees, hips, and shoulders can make a dramatic difference in the health of some very important joints and may prevent some visits to the doctor. Keeping your body “tuned up” through exercise and “fueled up” with the right kinds of food will improve your mileage and lower your repair costs!
