HONOR FLIGHT

The Vietnam Memorial; a great wall, a greater meaning BY JESSIE KERN jkern@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5521 @JessieKern12 WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Vietnam Memorial ignited deep emotion in a great number of veterans who took Thursday’s 44th Honor Flight. Of the 98 servicemen who flew to D.C. from Quad City International Airport, 89 are Vietnam veterans. The memorial’s black granite wall stretches far, inscribed with the names of 57,939 people who sacrificed their lives serving in Vietnam. Veterans had the opportunity to look up and find familiar names on the wall, some even rubbing them onto paper to carry along with them. John Foxley, 74, of Grand Detour, said he’s seen the traveling wall several times but never the memorial in Washington. “It sort of staggers your imagination, Foxley said. “It just goes on and on and on. Vietnam veteran David Lawton, 71, of Thomson, head bowed, was overcome with tears as touched a name and remembered the lost life.

MOUNT CARROLL – Stacie Klein is doing a lot more with her hands these days, in addition to working wonders with a spatula. “I get to do the Vanna White thing,” said Klein, co-owner of Char-

lie’s II, a bar and grill in downtown Mount Carroll. With nearly every passing morning coffee customer, Klein has flipped her wrist quite often to show off the newest item to grace the vintage bar counter – it’s a foottall plaque from the Carroll County Farm Bureau commemorating the county’s Best Burger. The Bureau organized the contest

through the month. Klein was unaware such a contest was going on until around Mother’s Day. She noticed someone was trying out burgers at each of the locations, and soon enough more and more people came in with the same purpose. Revenue grew, too.

in April, and asked the public for nominations among places to eat in Carroll County. The choices were narrowed down to four restaurants by April 30. Charlie’s II, Je’Rod’s in Shannon, MillWheel Tavern in Milledgeville, and The Crooked Roof in Lanark. Voting among the four closed May 26, and more than 250 votes were garnered halfway

Cody’s take on the best burgers in Carroll County

CUSTOM KITCHEN CABINETRY MADE LOCALLY OLD WORLD CRAFTSMANSHIP

MillWheel Tavern, Milledgeville: I ordered the Three Cheese Garlic burger, which is cooked with garlic herb butter. The cheeses were American, cheddar, and mozzarella, all melted in unison, covering Cody Cutter/ccutter@saukvalley.com almost the entire patty. What looks like Charlie’s II is located at 123 W. Market St., the shape of a hamburger patty, but in Mount Carroll. doesn’t look beef brown, was extremely appealing at first sight. The meat was nice and tender, and was very easy to devour. Je’Rods, Shannon: I hadn’t visited this place until I heard it was a finalist for Carroll County’s Best Burger. I ordered what was described as “The Pounder.” Cheddar cheese was melted as much as it could possibly be melted, with bacon chunks spread between two half-pound patties. One could guess that this would take both hands to munch on, and it did. Charlie’s II, Mount Carroll: Sacre bleu! Blue cheese, that is. I ordered the Blue Cheese and Bacon Burger, largely because I’m a fan of blue cheese. The trick with blue cheese is to spread it out like butter around and under the patty, leaving no morsel behind. Take that potency, plus crisp strips of bacon on a patty, and taste buds were dancing on the brick streets. Crooked Roof, Lanark: It’s nice enough outside to start grilling burgers, and the one I had here tasted like one I would have got fresh off the rack. This one was also a bacon cheeseburger. Add in the cheddar cheese melted on top of the strips of bacon, and there was a lot to bite into. Not much grease here, which made it easy to get a grab on.

• BURGER Continued from Page 6 “I noticed a spike when the contest was going on,” Klein said. “A lot of people were going around wanting to try them out, and that actually helped out all four businesses around.” The beef and other meats they serve come from the Preston Locker Plant in Preston, Iowa. There’s no real secret to making it any more special, said Klein, other than making it appear as filling as possible. Charlie’s II offers a hamburger; cheeseburger; bacon cheeseburger; mushroom burger; a homemade pizza burger; a blue cheese and bacon burger; an A1 burger topped with the popular steak sauce; and a western burger consisting of two onion rings, American cheese and barbecue

sauce. Ray Jay of Mount Carroll has been a regular customer for 26 years, and is hooked on the burgers. “They haven’t killed me yet,” Jay said. “The food’s good.” Klein has heard customers compliment the burgers as “filling,” and that the burgers aren’t pressed to look like a small patty. However, the countywide award might be the best compliment of all. “I work a lot of hours,” Klein said. “It was quite a reward back, saying that we’re doing good.” Stacie and Robert Klein have owned the restaurant, named for Stacie’s father, for 4 years; and daughters Brooke and Mackenzie help whenever they can. Charlie’s II is located at 123 W. Market St.

Tom Thompson, 70, of Rock Falls, said he was able to connect on the flight with some people he went to high school with. He also found some of his old classmates’ names

••• Library programs are starting next week. Whose kid is bored? Likely all of them by now! Check with your local library or check out our website or Facebook page to see when we are scheduled to do the June library programs. ••• June is National Dairy Month. This June marks the 81st year that National Dairy Month has been celebrated. Here are some dairy facts for you. The average dairy cow weighs about 1,400 pounds. Cows have 32 teeth, all of them on the bottom with a dental pad on top. Cows have an acute sense of smell, and can smell something up to 6 miles away. A cow eats 90 to 100 pounds of food and drinks about 35 gallons of water (the equivalent of a bathtub full) every day. A cow spends about 6 hours eating and 8 hours chewing its cud every day. U.S. dairy farms produce roughly 21 billion gallons of milk annually. All 50 states in the U.S. have dairy farms. Dairy farmers are paid

by the hundredweight (100 pounds), not by the gallon. There are approximately 8.6 pounds of milk per gallon. 99 percent of all U.S. households purchase milk. The average American consumes almost 25 gallons of milk each year. The natural yellow color of butter comes mainly from the beta-carotene found in the grass cows eat. Americans eat more than 300,000 tons of yogurt per year. About 300

varieties of cheese are sold in the United States. The most popular cheese in America is cheddar. It takes about 50 licks to finish a single ice cream scoop. It takes 10 pounds of milk to make one pound of cheese. It takes 12 pounds of whole milk to make one gallon of ice cream. It takes 21.8 pounds of milk to make one pound of butter.

and laughed lightly as they recalled memories of those who died. Joseph Randall, 67, of Savanna, served in Germany before being

sent to Vietnam. “In Germany you play war, and then you go to Vietnam and you find out it’s no play over there.”

SUDOKU PUZZLE

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
