Solar farm coming to former landfill County projects potential for up to $4.6 million in lease payments

BY PAM EGGEMEIER Sauk Valley Media peggemeier@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5570 MORRISON – The Whiteside County Board on Tuesday unanimously approved a land lease and easement deal with a company that plans to build a solar farm on county property.

The board had a letter of intent in place with Roseville, Minnesota-based IPS Solar, which plans to build the solar farm on about 105 acres of property at the closed

Prairie Hill landfill at 18762 Lincoln Road. The lease is for the landfill site and 20 additional acres of land across U.S. Route 30, behind the Whiteside County Highway Department.

The county was able to negotiate a better deal in the final lease agreement.

“The original proposal called for the county to get $1,000 per acre, but in the final land lease, they agreed to pay $1,200 per acre,” said Gary Camarano, Whiteside County economic development director.

The lease is for 25 years and gives IPS the option for two additional

5-year extensions. The deal calls for a 2 percent annual increase in the lease rate.

If the company maximizes the available acreage in the area, the solar farm would Gary produce 10 megawatts Camarano of electricity a year, which could fuel up to 7,500 homes. It takes about 8 acres to produce 1 megawatt of power.

It also could fuel a new revenue stream for the county’s general fund.

“If all goes well and they get to 10 megawatts, over the life of the lease, the county could bring in more than $4.6 million,” Camarano said.

That number assumes the company would opt for both 5-year extensions of the lease.

Renewable energy projects are moving at a rapid pace as companies try to take advantage of the state’s Future Energy Jobs Act. The legislation, passed in 2016, mandates that

25 percent of ComEd and Ameren’s power come from wind or solar by 2025.

The board was upbeat about finding a way to repurpose property that isn’t well suited for other productive use.

“A solar farm requires a lot of area, and a closed landfill makes an excellent site for one,” County Board Chairman Jim Duffy said.

“The board is excited about creating long-term value for the landfill and supplying clean energy to the area’s residents and businesses.”

Camarano called the revitalization of the site “poetic.”

“A landfill is a highly visible reminder of the human impact on the environment, and now we are transforming our trash piles into renewable energy,” he said.

The company is eager to get construction started as soon as possible.

Now that the lease is in place, the solar farm could be operating within a year.

Chadwick author traces family stories

Halo has a new owner, but it’s business as usual

BY PHILLIP HARTMAN Prairie Advocate phartman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5525 CHADWICK – After escaping the crackdown at Tiananmen Square in China, teaching in Taiwan, and working in journalism in Mexico and Chicago, Daniel Nardini decided on something closer to home for his fourth book.

“After my grandfather, there’s really no history of my family at all. I wanted to leave something behind while I’m still here,” Nardini, 58, said of his fourth autobiographical work, “My Italian American Family, Rural Taiwan and Daniel Lawndale News MemNardini oirs.”

Nardini was born in 1960 near a farm in Bloomington, later moving to Elmhurst with his family. The first third of his new book deals with his experiences growing up, and stories of his parents, his sister, Nancy, and other relatives.

This is the first book” to deal with his earlier years, Nardini said.

In his youth, Nardini was fascinated with Asian culture. After graduating from Beloit College, he gained a job in 1990 as an English teacher in Taiwan, staying in the countryside of Taichung, the third-largest city in Taiwan.

His first book, “South Korea: Our Story,” tells of his experiences as a teacher and his struggles to bring

STERLING – Two years after it was acquired by Audax Private Equity, Halo Branded Solutions has been sold to a private equity firm with deeper pockets.

Halo announced the deal Thursday with TPG Growth, a firm that can bring more working capital to the table for the company’s continued growth.

Halo said the sale will have no impact on local operations.

Financial terms were not disclosed Terry for the deal, which McGuire is subject to regulatory approval and set to close in the second quarter.

TPG Growth has headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, and San Francisco, and an international presence in Europe, Asia and Australia.

Halo’s sustained growth in a fragmented industry continues to bring interest from private equity investors after continually hitting its growth targets.

“There are roughly 20,000 distributors of promotional products in the United States, and Halo is one of the three largest,” said Terry McGuire, senior vice president of marketing and communications at Halo.

FULTON – Charles H. Vos, 94, of Fulton, formerly of Albany, died Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Harbor Crest Nursing Home in Fulton.

He was born Sept.

15, 1923, in Galesburg, North Dakota, to Henry and Emma Vos. He married Lois Harvey on March 28, 1952, in Albany. She preceded him in death on March 25, 2016. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy from 1944 to 1946.

Charles farmed for many years, retiring in January 1986. He was a member of Albany United Methodist Church and the Whiteside County Farm Bureau. Charles had the honor of participating in the Honor Flight.

Survivors include his daughters, Karen (Francis) Frederick of Rock Falls, Marilyn (Gary) White of Bettendorf, Iowa, LuAnn Vos of Morrison, and Nancy (Tom) Hook of Morrison; his sons, Raymond (Lisa) Vos of Chadwick and Randall (Deb) Vos of Sterling; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Johnson; and a brother, Richard Vos. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Judith Vos; his brothers, Martin, Emery, Harold, and William Vos; a sister, Evelyn; and two sisters in infancy.

Butterfly club to start in June ELIZABETH – University of Illinois will have a butterfly club for children 10 and older starting June 21 at the Jo Daviess County Extension Office, 204 Vine St,.

Sessions will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m., with future dates on June 28, July 12 and 26, and Aug. 2 and 9. Children will be able to raise monarch butterflies from eggs in a butterfly house at the Extension office, then learn to tag butterflies before the butterflies migrate to Mexico. Planting, painting, games, and more activities are planned, including a lunch and tag and release party.

Highland, Columbia ink nursing program agreement PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF FREEPORT – Highland Community College officials and representatives from Columbia College’s Freeport campus signed an agreement May 15 to offer an Associate of Applied Science Registered Nursing degree through Highland, and transfer to online classes to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Columbia.

Registered nurses can now complete their bachelor’s degree in nursing through online classes.

All Columbia classes are online only.

Only grades of C or better will be accepted to transfer to Columbia, and students must enroll in the Associate to Bachelor’s program for the plan.

Divided board says no to proposed UTV trail Rejects calls for more funds for sheriff, and to try trail for 1 year

BY TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL – A proposed UTV trail for Carroll County is off the table for now after the County Board voted 6-3 to not pursue the matter further during its meeting May 18.

The meeting began with Chairman Kevin Reibel saying he was on the fence regarding the controversial plan.

“We do have a proposal, and I know we have some in favor and some against on the board, so it is likely to be a very close vote,” said Reibel. “However, I think we need to go ahead and take that vote and decide whether we want to proceed with the trail proposal or not.”

Board member Joe Payette made the motion to send the proposal back to the townships, asking each

township engineer which roads they would deem acceptable for trail use.

“When the trail was initially proposed, it was primarily along county roads,” Payette said. “I understand that some townships do not want to be involved with the trail and some do, but I think it should begin right there at the grassroots which is with the townships. When it comes back to the board, we will have plenty of opportunity to say yea or nay.

Let them initiate it and show their interest in it.”

County Highway Engineer Kevin Vandendooren sought to clarify whether the board has the authority to designate township roads for trail use.

“Designating the use of township

roads for off-road vehicle use is not the responsibility of the board, it is the responsibility of the Road District Commissioner,” Vandendooren said. “I’ve spoken with six townships, and my impression is all of them are interested in the establishment of this trail. They would love to have it.”

He said what they want from the County Board are rules and regulations governing the trail.

“They want the County Board to take the lead establishing the rules, so that everybody has the same rules,” Vandendooren said. “If you do it individually by township, everybody could have a different set of rules.”

Sheriff Jeff Doran stood by his earlier observation, saying he does

not have the manpower to enforce rules or laws on a trail.

Payette’s motion was defeated 6-3.

At that point, board member Paul Hartman made the motion not to proceed with the trail, but during the discussion following the motion, it was suggested that the board provide the funding necessary for the sheriff’s department to police the trail. The sheriff replied he would need at least two new officers and a dispatcher, and even then might not be able to control the trail.

“I think the most important thing about this is the people that live along the proposed trail,” the sheriff said. “They bought a house out in the country along a country road so they could be left alone. I think we should respect that.”

Vandendooren suggested naysayers contact officials in Jackson County, Iowa, and Lafayette County, Wisconsin, where trails have operated successfully for years, or talk to the DNR to see what kinds of calls come in.

increased number of people using the roads. But these problems haven’t come to fruition yet in the neighboring states that have these trails,” Payette said. “I think the positives outweigh the negatives here, and I would be supportive of trying the trail for a year. I don’t think these routes will become UTV or ATV interstates all of a sudden just because we open a trail. I would like to see a year to try it and then sculpt and mold what needs to be fixed after that.”

Board member Ron Preston asked that the board and the residents get past their “fear of the unknown.”

“Everybody I’ve talked to says let’s give it a try for 1 year,” Preston said. “Kevin [Vandendooren] has most of the fears covered, and I’m in favor of the 1-year trial.”

The board then voted and decided not to proceed with a trail by a 6-3 margin.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. June 7 in the Carroll County Courthouse.

JUNE 2 Volunteers sought for prairie cleanup days in Freeport FREEPORT – Northwest Illinois Audubon Society needs volunteers for stewardship days in June to help maintain area preserves.

The group will cut brush, girdle saplings, and remove sweet clover, burdock, and wild parsnip from: • 8 to 10 a.m. June 2 at Silver Creek Biodiversity Preserve, about 2 miles south of Leaf River at the intersection of Leaf River Road and West Grove roads. Parking is off of Leaf River Road, which is South Main Street in Leaf River.

• 7 to 9 a.m. June 4, 6, 18, and 27, and 8 to 10 a.m. June 8, 12, 14, and 25 at Elkhorn Creek Biodiversity Preserve. The site is about 3 miles southwest of Forreston in the southwest corner of West Grove and Freeport roads. Parking is off of West Grove Road.

• 8 to 10 a.m. June 20 at Freeport Prairie, just south of Meadows Drive and Walnut Road on Freeport’s south side.

Parking is off of Walnut Road.

All days include work instructions and a scheduled break with water and snacks. Tools and gloves are provided.

Work will include removal of invasive plants, brush cutting, and trail maintenance.

Volunteers must wear long pants, long sleeves, socks long enough to tuck pant legs into for tick avoidance, a hat, and appropriate footwear for walking through tall plants that may be wet.

MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS

• Lanark: A free breakfast for veterans and their spouses will be served at 7 a.m. at Eastland Junior-Senior High School, 500 S. School Drive. A service starts at 10 a.m. at the veterans memorial in Lanark Cemetery, state Route 64 and Southeast Lanark Avenue, or at the high school if it rains. Maj. Frederick A. Hauser, commanding surgeon from the Rock Island Arsenal will speak, the Eastland High School band will perform, a color guard will present the colors, and there will be a rifle salute and taps.

• Morrison: A parade starts at 10:30 a.m. on Main Street between Madison and Bartlett streets, and ends at Grove Hill Cemetery, where the Rev. Rich Davis will give the invocation. Chief Petty Officer Lori Matlak with the Coast Guard will be the speaker. Afterward, veterans, their families and the public are invited to the Morrison American Legion Hall, 611 N. Genessee St.

• Mount Carroll: Activities start at 10 a.m. at West Carroll Middle School, 633 S. East St. A speaker from the Rock Island Arsenal will address attendees. Participants then will travel to the Carroll County Courthouse, 301 N. Main St., for a ceremony at the Civil War Monument to honor those who died in the Civil War. Wreaths will be placed, the colors presented, and taps played.

After the Civil War honors, a ceremony will take place on the Route 78 bridge to drop a wreath into the Waukarusha River for those who died at sea. A 21-gun salute will be performed, and taps played. Servicemen then will return to the courthouse yard, get on a trailer, and go to Oak Hill Cemetery. They will march to the center of the cemetery, have a 21-gun salute, and play taps.

• Savanna: A program will be from 10;30 to 11:30 a.m. at West Carroll Primary School, 2215 Wacker Road. VFW Post 2223 Commander Mike Raleigh will give the welcome, and Joey Garcea, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Savanna, will give the invocation. The Men of Calvary will sing the national anthem.

After the Pledge of Allegiance, Korean War Veteran Curtis Pilgrim will give the address. Raleigh and American Legion Post 148 Commander Paul Mayer will place a wreath, and Mayer will read a roll call of veterans lost during the last year. BOYS BASKETBALL Dunlap out as Cougars head coach The Eastland Board of Education Monday declined to renew Tony Dunlap’s contract as head coach of Cougars boys basketball team.

Dunlap had coached the Cougars since 1994, with a record of 473-224 and 1A fourth-places finishes at the State Tournament in 2010 and 2013. He also coached four sectional championship teams and six regional title teams.

Dunlap will remain an assistant football coach for the Eastland-Pearl City Wildcatz this fall.

Fransen resigns as Pearl City AD

Brianna Haight, a 2017 graduate of Lena-Winslow High School, was a member of the NJCAA Division 3 championship Rock Valley College softball program, which won its fifth straight national title Saturday with a 6-2 win over top-ranked Herkimer College.

Haight, an infielder, played in 29 games for the Golden Eagles, hitting .273 for two home runs and 10 RBIs.

Kristy Fransen announced her resignation Friday as athletic director at Pearl City High School.

Fransen had been the Wolves’ AD for 11 years. Under her tenure, Pearl City football players competed on EPC playoff teams for all but one of the last 11 seasons, and the Wolves’ softball program won four consecutive regional titles from 2014-17, including a sectional championship in 2016.

Area well represented at girls state track meet

BY ADAM FEINER Sauk Valley Media afeiner@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5550 CHARLESTON – Prairie Advocate area athletes from six different track & field programs combined to bring home 22 medals from the IHSA Track & Field State Finals on Saturday, including a pair of championships by two throwers and one sprinter.

Fulton was ninth in the Class 1A team standings with 24 points, led by Chloe Lindeman’s championship jn the shot-put. Milledgeville-Eastland tied Lena-Winslow for 10th with 23.

Stockton’s Emily Offenheiser won the 1A discus title, and Le-Win’s Carmen DeVries won the 400 dash.

Fulton junior Daekota Knott took second in the 1A triple jump, leaping 37-8 1/2 on her first attempt in Saturday’s finals. She was edged by Orion’s Danielle Taets, who’s prelim distance of 38 feet held up. BV freshman Jade Aber finished 12th (34-11).

“I wanted to get the 38-foot jump I did at sectionals, but it’s pretty exciting,” Knott said. “It pushes me so hard having Danielle coming back. It makes me want to work in the offseason.”

Milledgeville senior Rebecca Waite had the daunting task of competing in four finals events. Waite’s top finish came in the 200 dash, as she took third with a time of 25.88.

“Making the finals in four events is very tiring,” Waite said. “It’s hard on the body. Everything hurts at one point. I don’t get much of a break.

I run, get my medal, go back to the tent, and run again. That’s pretty much what I did all day.”

Waite took fifth in the 100 dash with a time of 12.48, and was second after the first 300 meters of the 400 before fading down the stretch and finishing sixth (59.57). The Illinois State recruit also teamed with Sage Walrath, Olivia Sturrup and Erykah Ames to finish seventh in the 400 relay (50.76).

Sturrup took ninth in the 200 (26.74), and teamed with Walrath, Lydia Coatney and Alyvia Woodard to finish seventh in the 800 relay (1:47.02). Woodard also finished 10th in the long jump (16-9 3/4).

Newman freshman Karlie Hey medaled in both the 1A 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, placing fourth in the mile (11:37.12) and ninth in the 2-mile (11:38.98).

“I came in wanting to place at least fourth,” Hibbard said. “It’s a

little disappointing I didn’t do a little better, but I was close and broke my school record again. I’m pretty happy with that.”

Girls track: Throwing everything they’ve got Lindeman, Offenheiser win 1A throwing events, Le-Win’s DeVries wins 400

CHARLESTON – In order to capture the Class 1A shot put title Saturday at the IHSA Track & Field State Finals, Fulton junior Chloe Lindeman took the advice echoed by her coach, and famously, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

R-E-L-A-X. “Something I’ve always struggled with is relaxing,” Lindeman said. “I’m usually very tense, very on-guard. I’ve been waiting for this for years. If I just relaxed, it would go far. I’ve really been able to get better at that.”

Lindeman finished second in the discus the last 2 years, tossing 43-3 1/2 as a freshman and 43-1 1/2 a season ago.

“Her first 2 years coming down here, she was a bundle of nerves. Everything frustrated her so much,” Fulton coach Tim Wessels said of Lindeman. “But what’s been amazing this year is that she was so relaxed. She could shrug off bad throws, and tell herself that she could do better. She got to that point where she was no longer fighting herself.”

Lindeman broke through with a top toss of 47-3 3/4 on Saturday, with a special flair for the dramatic being that the distance came on her final throw.

She came into the final day of competition with a comfortable lead of nearly 3 feet after throwing 45-10 1/4 in the prelims.

“The harder she tries, she doesn’t throw as well,” Wessels said.

BY PRARIE ADVOCATE STAFF Eastland stayed alert on the base paths and took advantage of a multitude of Newman mistakes to cruise to a 10-1 win in the championship game of the 1A Morrison Regional at Morrison Sports Complex.

The Cougars recorded just five hits, and had four more batted balls hit hard enough to force Comets’ fielding errors and move baserunners along.

Newman, meanwhile, saw its pitchers struggle with control: 12 walks, two hit batsmen, five wild pitches, and a balk didn’t make the game easy. Four of the walks were intentional, including one in the fifth inning given to Ethan Christians – that loaded the bases for Dawson DeMichele, who cleared the bags with a double to right field to push the Cougars’ lead to 10-1.

Elsewhere in the fifth, Kaden Henze had an RBI single, and another Cougars run came in on a fielder’s choice – putting what was a 5-1 game out of reach.

Newman’s lone run came on a steal of home from Luke Olson in the second inning.

Christians and DeMichele retired the side on five occasions. Christians earned the win, striking out nine and allowing three hits before he was pulled after 75 pitches. DeMichele retired all seven batters he faced.

1A MILLEDGEVILLE REGIONAL Milledgeville 7, Durand 1: Getting out of early jams gave the Missiles the momentum they needed later at the plate in a 1A Milledgeville Regional title tilt against the Bulldogs.

Alexis Janssen tied the score at 1 with a two-out RBI double to drive in Natalie Brown in the bottom of the first, then Brown scored again in the third, this time on an error after leading off the inning with a single and then stealing second.

Lindsey Brown scored another two-out run in the fourth, when Holly Smith’s hard line-drive bunt bounced off the third baseman’s glove and away for an infield single.

Smith then came up big two innings later. With the Missiles clinging to a 3-1 lead, Smith – the No. 9 batter in the lineup – smacked a one-out single to right-center field to drive in Lindsey Brown and Madalyn Hicks for some huge insurance runs.

2A OREGON REGIONAL Fulton 10, Winnebago 0, 6 inn: Emily Schipper provided the big blast for the Steamers in a regional title win over Fulton at Oregon Park West with a booming grand slam to center field in the second inning.

The slam put Fulton up 7-0. The Steamers scored twice in the first inning on an RBI single by Rachael Huizenga and an RBI groundout by Madison Whitmore.

The third run came when Huizenga walked with the bases loaded before Schipper cleared the bags with her homer.

The early runs calmed down a Steamer program not accustomed to softball success, and Whitmore closed the door with a dominant performance in the circle. She allowed one hit and walked one while striking out three in six innings.

Lindeman proved she could throw 48 feet in a meet early in the season, tossing 48-2 1/2 at the Illinois Indoor Top Times Meet. Her standout performance put the rest of the state on notice, and gave her something to strive for the rest of the season.

“It feels like a lot of pressure knowing I can hit 48, 49, or even all the way to 50,” Lindeman said. “I push myself to meet those numbers.

On that last throw, I listened to my coach for once. He told me to treat it like a practice throw.”

As she gazed through her sunglasses at the top of the podium Saturday, Lindeman couldn’t help but smile after accomplishing her season-long goal. Happy thoughts filled the six-time state medalist’s head, as well as a vision of what she hopes her senior season will hold.

“I know I have to defend it next year. I’ve already thought about it,” Lindeman said. “Next year, I’m going to be stubborn and hit 50 feet. I will get it, and hopefully win another state title.”

Fulton finished in ninth place with 24 points.

DeVries wins 400: Lena-Winslow

DeVries cruised to state gold in the 400 with a personal best time of 57.04 seconds, with her next-closest competition more than 1 second behind her. Althoff freshman Neriah Parks (58.50) was runner-up.

In prelims, DeVries had the second-best time (57.95), behind Milledgeville’s Rebecca Waite (59.75).

DeVries placed third in the triple jump (37-4 1/4), and fourth in the long jump (17-9 1/2). She accounted for all 23 of the Panthers’ team points, good enough for 10th place in 1A. Offenheiser wins discus: After Thursday’s preliminary round, it was clear the Stockton senior Emily Offenheiser was the one to beat in the discus, throwing more than 8 feet better than anyone else.

Offenheiser extended her lead to more than 13 feet Saturday, cruising to gold in the event with a hurl of 151-8; Teutopolis sophomore Claire Bushur was runner-up (138-5).

In the shot put, Offenheiser finished runner-up to Lindeman with a heave of 44-10 1/2, besting her prelim throw by more than 2 1/2 feet.

Offenhsier, who helped lead the Blackhawks to a third-place finish in girls basketball this winter, finished fourth last year in both throwing events.

Savanna tract receives Opportunity Zone designation

Illinois was one of 18 states that submitted areas for qualification as Opportunity Zones, which were established as part of a new federal tax incentive set up in last year’s tax bill. Gov. Bruce Rauner announced the state selections Friday.

The zones aim to stimulate economic development by giving investors a tax break for reinvesting unrealized profits in the protected areas.

The approved zones cover more than 85 percent of the state’s 102 counties. Many of the areas chosen are in disadvantaged communities with identifiable growth potential.

There were 1,305 qualifying low-income census tracts in Illinois, but only 25 percent of the areas could be nominated for selection by the governor.

Four of the counties selected were in the district of State Rep. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna – Whiteside, Carroll, Henry and Rock Island.

McCombie said many of the communities she represents in the 71st district face unique economic development challenges.

“Being a border community with higher property taxes and higher workers’ compensation costs, we need extra tools and creativity to be competitive with our neighbors in Iowa, Wisconsin and Indiana,” McCombie said in a news release.

Choices were based on need and potential, an attempt to represent the entire state, and local input. The

ay is National Beef Month.

And when it comes to beef production, it turns out there’s a lot that farmers actually want you to know.

The recommended serving size for lean red meat is just 3 to 4 ounces, which translates to a deck of cards. A 3-oz. serving of red meat provides us with half the recommended daily protein intake our body needs, and is an excellent source of Vitamin B6 and B12 (energy boost!), zinc (maintains the immune system), and iron (helps oxygenate the blood). And get this – ground beef actually has 8 times more Vitamin B12, 6 times more zinc and 2 1/2 times more iron than chicken.

Ground beef is actually ranked third for foods that have the best source of iron, which puts it on the list with fortified cereals and grains. There are more than 50 different cuts of meat on a cow. The five most popular among Americans are chuck pot roast, top loin steak, top round steak, top sirloin steak, and t-bone steak.

Meat comes with all kinds of labels, including USDA Prime, Choice and Select. All have to do with mouth-watering characteristics like tenderness, juiciness and flavor. Prime refers to beef that comes from young cows and has significant marbling (fat), which makes it good for grilling and broiling. Choice beef has less marbling than Prime, and works well for braising and roasting. Select beef is tender-ish, but has less marbling than either Prime or Choice, which makes it good for marinating.

A dedicated cattle nutritionist (yep, you can specialize) creates a very specific feed recipe for cows to keep their meat optimal. Farmers and veterinarians are working to reduce antibiotic use in cattle by focusing on good nutrition and the use of vaccines in comprehensive preconditioning programs – before they get big enough for us to eat.

Nutrition wise, there is really no difference between organic beef and non-organic beef because antibiotics pass through cattle before they’re allowed to be sold for meat.

So what’s for dinner? How about some beef!

BY JEFF BROWN FarmWeekNow.com They’re not quite caught up yet, but Illinois farmers came a long way with plantings last week, according to the crop progress report USDA released April 30.

Farmers have planted 32 percent of their corn acreage, a major increase over the 4 percent planted the previous week. That compares with 40 percent for the five-year average.

“Everybody around here has been going after it since about Friday last week,” FarmWeek CropWatcher Brent Corners said Monday morning.

“This weekend was pretty busy.”

The statewide average temperature for the week was 3 degrees below average, but ample sunshine in most parts of the state over the weekend provided positive planting conditions.

And all of a sudden, an increasing number of fields are starting to turn dry.

“That last rain we got, we only about a halfinch but it took two days to get it. I think it soaked in,” said Corners, who farms in Jefferson County. “We had all these cool temperatures and it wasn’t drying the greatest. The last few days, the ground’s really started working a lot better.”

Rain is in the forecast for parts of the state later this week.

“Everybody’s got it cranked up to 11,” Corners added. “They know it’s May and it’s time to go.”

Soybean plantings also showed up on the report for the first time, with 7 percent of that crop in the ground. That’s actually ahead of the five-year

Meanwhile, USDA rated Illinois’ wheat crop at 59 percent good to excellent and 9 percent poor to very poor. Five percent of wheat has headed,

And pasture condition improved from last week’s report, with 57 percent rated good to excellent, compared with just 41 percent a week ago.

Fertilizer prices remain stable Lower prices, reduced usage has helped farmers cut costs to offset lower commodity prices FARMWEEKNOW.COM One bit of relief in recent years of low commodity prices has come from the inputs side of the equation. In particular, fertilizer prices have held at about the same levels as they did a year ago.

“It’s a strong market,” said Jean Payne, presi-

dent of the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association. “You’ve got a lot of people, especially throughout the eastern Corn Belt, all wanting to get everything done at the same time.”

Additional nearby suppliers have been able to meet that spike in demand.

“The new nitrogen plant in Weaver, Iowa, has brought more supply on,” Payne told the RFD Radio Network. “We have expanded supply at East Dubuque Nitrogen Fertilizer, which is our only nitrogen plant in Illinois. They’re running at capacity.”

Even if commodity prices aren’t where farmers

would like them to be, prices for some nutrients are cheaper than they used to be, Payne said.

“People remember we had $800/ton ammonia for lots of years, and it’s about half of that now.”

Adjustments can be made, if needed, when side-dressing, which is another advantage of split applications. Using the right rate at the right time also helps keep costs in check.

“We’ve proven the last four years we don’t need those extra units of nitrogen,” Payne said. “Use the nitrogen rate calculator for your soils. It pays off, and you don’t need to spend the extra money on it.”

May beef month fires up demand Celebrate these 5 facts that show how much the beef sector means to the economy

BY DAN GRANT FarmWeekNow.com Consumers looking for a reason to fire up the grill, besides the fact temperatures finally are above freezing, can celebrate Illinois Beef Month in May. The honorary month begins this week in Illinois with a proclamation from the governor and traditionally features a number of beef promotions.

“It’s the time of year people want to grill steaks and burgers,” said Jill Johnson, executive vice president of the Illinois Beef Association (IBA).

“They’ll see beef featured more (at retail locations).

“It’s also our opportunity, as an industry, to get in front of that and explain that beef is known for great taste, it’s a food of strength with protein and 10 essential nutrients, and it’s responsibly raised.”

So, what does the beef cattle industry mean to Illinois and the U.S.?

Here are five facts worth celebrating.

- The total inventory of cattle in the U.S. as of Jan. 1 was 94.4 million head, up 1 percent from the previous year,

with 1.15 million head in Illinois.

- The cattle industry generated $66.54 billion in cash receipts in 2017 nationwide. Cash receipts for cattle and calves in Illinois totaled more than $6 billion in 2016.

- The beef industry makes up 32 percent of the livestock sector labor force in Illinois, supporting 8,264 jobs.

- U.S. beef exports last year increased to 2.78 billion pounds worth nearly $7.3 billion, which added about $300 to the value of each cow.

- Domestically, USDA projects total red meat and poultry consumption this year could average a record 222.2 pounds per person.

In Illinois, beef will be promoted vigorously in May through radio advertisements, Ag in the Classroom, grill-outs and local farm tours.

“Our state checkoff program (added in recent years) give us the opportunity to promote beef more in local communities and network with county cattlemen’s groups that are really plugged into their local communities,” Johnson said. “It helps fund programs that reach consumers in their backyard.”

Other areas of increased beef promotions are retail outlets, including an IBA presence in 17 Hy-Vee locations in the state, and through digital media. Dieticians will be on hand at Hy-Vee stores where shoppers also can enjoy complementary beef recipe cards, meat thermometers and food samples.

“You don’t see as many (beef promotional) commercials on TV as

you used to,” Johnson said. “Now they’re on YouTube and Facebook.”

And why is that?

“The biggest group of consumers making beef buying decisions is older millennial parents,” she noted.

“And a lot of them get their information from smartphones.”

Johnson noted that one successful digital ad can generate 1.5 million impressions or more.
