Sucher wants to drop public defender, hire own attorney

A hearing was to begin at 2 p.m.

Friday regarding a change-of-venue motion Carroll County Public Defender Colleen Buckwalter filed Tuesday on behalf of Andrew “A.J.” Sucher.

Instead, a hearing was held at 9 a.m. at which Sucher made an oral motion seeking to retain his own counsel and asking Judge John “Jerry” Kane to reschedule his May 21 jury trial.

Over the objections of State’s Attorney Scott Brinkmeier, Kane agreed to strike the trial date, and set a status hearing for June 22.

Buckwalter will remain Sucher’s attorney until a new one is hired.

Neither she nor Brinkmeier could

be reached for comment Friday afternoon.

In her motion, Buckwalter cited “overwhelming and highly prejudicial publicity in print and Andrew J. electronic media” Sucher that will make Sucher “unable to receive a fair trial in Carroll County and, for that matter, the counties surrounding Carroll County.”

The story of Knight’s beating and subsequent death, and of proposed legislation it has sparked seeking to stiffen the penalties for attacking DCFS workers, has been covered by multiple media outlets locally and statewide.

“The potential jury pool of Carroll County has been exposed to a barrage of highly prejudicial material that includes inflammatory, inaccurate and inadmissible material,” Buckwalter wrote. “There is no doubt this barrage will continue until trial date.”

Sucher, 25, faces at least 20 to 60 years in prison in the death of Pamela Knight, 59, of Dixon. She died Feb. 8 in a Chicago hospital of injuries investigators say Sucher inflicted on Sept. 29 when he kicked her in the head, fracturing her skull and causing severe brain damage.

The veteran Department of Children and Family Services worker, who was based in the state agency’s Sterling office, went to Sucher’s parents’ home in Milledgeville that afternoon looking for a 2-year-old who was to be taken into protective custody. She was attacked getting out of her car, investigators have said.

Sucher is being held on $1 million bond, charged with five counts of first-degree murder, as well as aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and aggravated battery of a state employee, each of which carries 2 to 5 years in prison.

He also is charged with aggravated battery of a peace officer, which carries 3 to 7 years.

Officials say he was being moved to another cell in the Carroll County Jail on Dec. 19 when he became “verbally combative” and punched Chief Deputy Craig Dimmick in the face.

He subsequently was transferred to Stephenson County, where he remains. Bond in that case is $75,000. ​ Sucher also has pleaded not guilty in Whiteside County Court to aggravated battery of a child, which carries 2 to 5 years, and battery, domestic battery, and interfering with the reporting of a domestic battery, all misdemeanors.

He is accused of dragging a 6-yearold by the foot and striking him in the face with a squirt gun, and of throwing a woman against a wall and taking her phone in a July 29 incident.

He was out on bond in that case when Knight was attacked.

It’s on hold while the Carroll County cases proceed.

Lanark business owner pushes through life’s challenges to put her House in order

BY PHILLIP HARTMAN Prairie Advocate phartman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5525 LANARK – Running a small business can be tough. But it’s pretty safe to say Mary Keller’s got what it takes to clean up at her new shop.

She served her country for 20 years, survived a fall from a 60-foot tower and she’s battling a genetic disorder, so keeping her house in order shouldn’t prove too much for the Army veteran turned business owner.

Today, the 42-year-old is the Mary behind Mary’s House of Soap and More at 125 N. Broad St. Keller sells soaps she makes herself – in dozens of different scents – along with other handmade personal care products like lip balm and bath salts. And just like the store name says, there’s more: Scentsy products (left from her time when she was a consultant), home decor, serving

trays, T-shirts, onesies, jewelry and more.

She and her husband, Dan Webb, 44, both of Fairhaven, held a ribbon-cutting to open the store April 2.

Keller, who grew up in Clinton, served in the Army from 1994 to 2014, becoming a logistics specialist. She spent time in Kuwait and Iraq, including a tour of duty that took her to one of Saddam Hussein’s palaces.

The danger didn’t end when she left the battlefield. While serving stateside, she was injured in a fall from a 60-foot tower in Kansas during a training exercise.

In 2003, she was diagnosed with a form of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects her connective tissues. Symptoms include loose or unstable joints, frequent dislocations, pain, and fragile skin.

OBITUARIES CHADWICK – Ross Donald Lowe, 64, of Chadwick, passed away Monday, April 30, 2018, at home, with his daughter by his side.

Ross was born Aug. 15, 1953, in Elgin, the son of Donald and Ruth (Stumpf) Lowe. He attended Elgin High School and graduated with the class of 1971. He later attended Drake University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education, with a minor in music in 1975. On October 20, 1979, Ross married Jane Aude.

Ross worked for 8 years at Adven-

tureland in Des Moines, Iowa, where he participated in the shows and managed many of the restaurants.

He served as the musical director for Timber Lake Playhouse and taught at the Mount Carroll School District for many years before his accident in 1989.

While there, he was involved in many organizations, including the yearbook committee, coaching volleyball and directing school plays. After Ross’s car accident, Ross served a board member on the Northern Illinois Center for Independent Living. He loved music, watching volleyball, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. One of Ross’s recent highlights was watching the Cubs win the World Series and visiting the Commissioner’s Trophy. Ross spent

most of his time with his loving caretakers, but was always looking for the opportunity to strike up a conversation and share his latest joke. Some of his fondest memories include the antics of his youth and times spent with Dean and the “Maggots.” Most of all, Ross cherished the time spent with his daughters, and later his three granddaughters.

Ross will be dearly missed by his daughter, Anne (Robert) Pilgrim of Chadwick; three granddaughters, Natalie, Elaina, and Allie Pilgrim; a brother, Dean (Sandra) Lowe of Sugarland, Texas; and two nieces, Kelsey and Abby Lowe.

Ross is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Ruth; and a daughter, Erin Lowe.

“I don’t produce collagen, so I dislocate really easily. Eventually, I will have to use a wheelchair,” Keller said.

She’s also dealing with a type of epilepsy, an irregular heartbeat, and other medical issues. She travels to the veterans hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, for treatment.

Still, she finds time to make the merchandise to keep her shelves stocked and run a business. In what free time she has, Keller likes to paint and stay active shooting hoops.

Whatever she does, she does with determination, setting aside the setbacks and pushing ahead.

“I suck it up,” she said. “I just keep going.”

Carroll County Board has public hearing on UTV path proposal

BY TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL – Residents concerned about the safety of a UTV trail proposed for Carroll County might take some comfort in the experience of Lafayette County in Wisconsin.

There, the Cheese County Trail runs through. It spans 47 miles, from Monroe to Mineral Point in the Wisconsin counties of Green, Lafayette and Iowa.

“They’ve had their trail open for about 10 years, and have had two accidents in that time,” Carroll County Highway Engineer Kevin Vandendooren said during a public hearing on the proposed trail held Thursday by the Carroll County Board. “When it first started, everybody had their reservations. They didn’t like it.

“They thought it was going to be a safety issue, but (Lafayette County Sheriff Reg Gill) said they are a population of 16K and have low-volume

roads, so it’s played out better than orgiinally thought.”

The Cheese County Trail is used

by ATVs, dirt bikes, quads and snowmobiles. On average, Vandendooren said, non-local trail users spend between $175 and $220 per trip, depending on the time of year.

Total spending of trail users exceeded $15 million during a 12 month study period conducted in 2011.

Non-local trail user spending provided an economic stimulus that infused more than $13 million into the local economies, and non-local trail user spending supported almost 190 local jobs, with average employee compensation per job of more than $28,000 per year for residents of the Wisconsin counties.

“Lafayette County in Wisconsin, Jackson and Clinton counties in Iowa have something in place, and I think several other counties to the south either have trails in place or have begun to look into it as well,” board member Joe Payette said. “I think that for Carroll County, that uses tourism as one of its bragging points, we might be missing out on an economic opportunity. It is something new, and it will need adjustments if we get it going, but I do personally think we want to get this going.”

Payette suggested the board allow a trail to operate for a year so it and area residents could see it operate, then fine tune it or even shut it down if necessary.

“Nothing is written in stone, but I think the economic opportunity here for our communities that need something is definitely there,” he said. “It will be an inconvenience for those that don’t want it, but I think that with adjustments to the proposed trail it is worth experimenting with.”

Board member Ron Preston cited public comments concerning the topography differences between the trail areas in Wisconsin and Carroll County.

“The land is not much different between here and in the trail areas in Iowa, and the economic potential is tremendous,” Preston said. “We cannot drive it away. It is going to come, and whether you want it or not it is going to be here. Let’s just try it for a year, and if we don’t like it we can just kick it aside. Why should we force this revenue away?”

No decision was made on the proposal during Thursday’s hearing.

Nearly 2 hours of public comments ranged from Carroll County Sheriff Jeffery Doran cautioning the board of his department’s lack of sufficient

manpower to adequately police a trail, to speculations about speed limit and safety concerns, to littering and trespassing issues, to fee and licensing structures, and apprehensions about dust and noise levels.

“When I first got into this back in 2008, nobody wanted to ride on the roads because everybody thought it was no fun riding an ATV on the road,” Vandendooren said. “But, then in 2014 they changed the laws and certain areas allowed driving these vehicles on the roads. I want to get this off the roads, but the only way to do that is to start on the roads so we can generate a little revenue so we can go out to our private landowners and start negotiating trails that are off the road.”

There is no seed money, he said.

“I’m not going to ask the board for $30,000 so I can build 50 miles of trails,” Vandendooren said. “I’m trying to get the trail established on the road while we generate the revenue that will allow us to go out and negotiate to get the trail off the road and onto private property. That’s the direction we are trying to go, but unfortunately it’s going to be a long process.”

The next County Board meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. May 17 in the Small Courtroom of the Carroll County Courthouse.

Morrison hospital planning $18 million expansion

begin in earnest. Most of the work is expected to be done in 2019 and finish in mid-2020, MCH said in a news release.

The expansion will include five new emergency bays – enclosed, individual rooms – and a new trauma bay, bringing the total number of rooms to eight, plus a canopy.

A new operating room will be added, bringing the total to three.

“We’re looking to possibly expand into orthopedic surgery,” Marketing Director Mick Welding said last week.

The work is being paid for with a 40-year USDA loan, which is being bundled with other outstanding loans.

The original building was built in 1934, was added on to 1954 and last updated in 1974.

Priority will be given to upperclassmen, those already accepted to university programs, and those who have demonstrated a commitment to pursing a career in theater.

Old-time radio show in Morrison MORRISON – Morrison Music Theater Association’s 2018 production will be “1940s Radio Hour,” at 7:30 p.m. May 31 and June 1 and 2 p.m. June 2 at the Morrison Institute of Technology auditorium, 701 Portland Ave. The musical tells the story of a weekly evening variety show broadcast from WOV, a 5,000-watt New York City radio station.

Jalayne Riewerts of Fulton will direct the production, while Doug Harridge of Morrison will provide musical direction and play Zoot Doublemann, the band leader. Nancy Brzezinski of Morrison will be the accompanist.

Other cast members, by city and role, are: Fulton: Olivia VanderBleek as Ginger Brooks.

Morrison: Carol Janvrin as Ann Collier, John Miller as B.J. Gibson, Bonnie Phend as Faye Templeton, and Eric Phend as Johnny Cantone.

JUNE 3 Hospice memorial program set in Sterling STERLING – Rock River Hospice and

Home’s annual memorial service for those who died during the past year will be at 3 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 2200 16th Ave. Anyone who has lost a loved one, regardless of hospice services, is welcome. A candlelighting service, special music, and readings will take place.

Light refreshments will be provided after the service.

Participants who did not use hospice, and who would like their loved one’s name included in the presentation, can call Hospice at 815-625-3858.

FRIDAY Milledgeville 11, River Ridge 9: The Missiles pulled out a wild NUIC win at home, falling behind 6-0, rallying to tie the game, taking the lead with a five-run sixth inning, then holding off a three-run rally in the top of the seventh.

The Panthers got an 11-strikeout, six-inning outing from starting pitcher Jordan Pierceson.

THURSDAY Newman 20, St. Bede 6: Luke Olson went 5-for-5 with four singles, a double and four RBIs to lead Newman to a road win in TRAC East play against St. Bede.

West Carroll regained the lead with a run in the top of the fifth to go up 12-11 when Madison Magill tripled to drive in Emma Aljets, but ROWVA scored five more in the sixth.

McKenna Sullivan tripled and hit a grand slam for West Carroll, falling a double short of the cycle. She had four RBIs, and Aljets added three RBIs. The Thunder finished 0-3 in the tournament with a 16-0, five-inning loss to Knoxville, as Lauren Kavanaugh tossed a one-hit shutout.

Lena-Winslow 4, Oregon 1: Kearra Lynn Schulz’s seven-inning single scored two in the seventh for the Panthers, as they held off Oregon in a nonconference road game.

Zoe Johnson allowed an earned run and six hits, and struck out nine in the complete-game win.

FRIDAY Sterling 10, Rochelle 0, 6 inn.: Jayme Eilers tossed a one-hitter and struck out 13 batters as the Golden Warriors clubbed the visiting Hubs.

Outdoor adventures: Turkey time comes a-calling L ast Sunday, I woke up early to do something I hadn’t done in 3 years.

Neither the first nor second spring turkey seasons fit into my busy schedule, but the third proved to be the charm.

Unfortunately, I left the timber without a bird in my hand, but I did leave feeling good about doing something I haven’t found the time for in recent years.

Overtime playoff hockey kept me and and my dad up the night before, but we still managed 5 hours of sleep before our alarms sounded at 4:20 a.m. Clothes were layered, guns were cased, and we were off to Carroll County like a herd of turtles.

We pulled up to a dead end adjacent to the north end of our land, and heard a gobble off to the southeast the second we opened our car doors. We quickly gathered the two decoys, the ground skirt and our guns, and wandered about 100 yards into the woods to our setup.

trail 30 yards to the south and east of our location, as I unfurled the ground skirt. Guys in our hunting party have used traditional blinds for turkey hunting before, but we prefer the challenge of staying still and relying on just enough cover to shoot.

Our cellphones read 5:30 a.m. by the time we settled in and started calling.

You may do the same thing, but in hunting with a partner, we choose to split duties equally. My dad opted to do the calling, and I was given the task of keeping a sharp eye out for any sort of movement.

Of course, the first order of business is finding out where birds might be located relative to your

setup, and utilizing an owl call will do just the trick. A couple of calls will elicit immediate responses from turkeys, thus giving you an edge in knowing how many and where the birds are in the woods.

Several turkeys responded to our owl call, and a couple of them sounded close. We still utilize a wooden box turkey call, but I’ve noticed that more and more hunters are using mouth calls nowadays. Experimenting with different calling strategies can be quite fun, especially when you find a few that can become reliable.

As the morning wore on, the gobbles decreased. There was one about every 10 minutes, but nothing steady or close. We waited until 7:30, and declared that it wasn’t worth us sitting for hours upon end before a bird strutted over.

If you have the time and motivation to sit all day, your odds of bagging a bird increase dramatically. Turkeys will hear and possibly respond to a call, and despite being

one of the dumbest creatures in the animal kingdom, they will mark the location in their heads. Eventually, the bird will wander over to where they heard the call, and that could be your time to get a shot off.

We headed to the east edge of our land, and called from there. A few minutes produced nothing, so we drove to the middle of our land and tried one last series of calls. Again, not one bird sounded. The hunt was effectively over.

We left the woods knowing we gave the hunt a good old-fashioned try, and headed for home. Of course, it’s called “hunting” for a reason.

However, I still considered the morning a success. Whenever I can wake up at the same time the woods does, and finish the hunt with Casey’s breakfast pizza, I’d call that a pretty good start to any day.

THURSDAY Pearl City 10, West Carroll 6: The Thunder scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but fell short in an NUIC West home loss to the Wolves.

Pearl City scored seven runs in the top of the fourth after West Carroll tied the game at two in the third.

Daniella Tafoya took the loss in the circle, but had two hits and an RBI at the plate. Maddie Meek tossed an inning of scoreless relief.

McKenna Sullivan had a double and a single, Emma Aljets had a double and an RBI, and Mushie Yazzie drove in a run.

St. Bede 10, Newman 7 WEDNESDAY Sterling 16, Rock Falls 0 (6 innings): Sterling was gifted a pair of runs in the first inning, and after that the Golden Warriors took what they wanted – and they took a lot.

The Golden Warriors rapped out 18 hits against Rock Falls, and 16 of those came against Rockets ace Payton Yanes. Each Sterling starter had at least one hit, with Genea Garza and Cara Alexander leading the way with three apiece.

Sterling struck in the top of the first inning with a pair of unearned runs. A lazy fly ball to left was misplayed by

Rock Falls’ Elise Moeller, Hannah Kessler and Grace Gould scored, and the Golden Warriors were off and running.

In the fourth inning, four consecutive singles, the last of which was from Jordan Thormeyer, produced one run. A sacrifice fly by Grace Gould upped the lead to 4-0.

In the fifth, the Golden Warriors doubled their lead to 8-0. The big blow was a bases-clearing double by Garza to the fence in left-center.

Sterling completely blew the game open in the sixth with eight runs.

Gretchen Gould, Maddie Corwell and Amayia Hernandez led off with singles, then Emilie Powers drew a walk to force in a run. Alexander followed with a triple to clear the bases and chase Yanes out of the circle.

Garza doubled, singled twice and drove in three runs, while Alexander tripled, singled twice and knocked in four runs for Sterling. Kessler had two hits and a walk and scored three runs, while Hernandez and Powers each scored twice.

The Golden Warriors were equally dominant in the circle, thanks to Jayme Eilers. She went the distance, allowing three hits and a walk, and struck out 15 batters with a vast arsenal of pitches.

Emma Norton struck out seven and scattered three hits and seven walks to earn the shutout in the circle. She also had a home run and two RBIs. Erin Henze had a single and a triple.

TUESDAY Fulton 15, Lena-Winslow 6: The Panthers scored four runs in the first inning, but let their lead slip away with multiple fielding errors as the game went on.

Kylee Sweenie had three singles, a triple and three RBIs for Fulton. Racheal Huizenga had a home run, a single and a team-high four RBIs. Emily Schipper had a double, a triple and an RBI. Liz Fish had two singles and a double. Rylee Leitzen and Ally Reed each drove in two runs, and Emily Banker also drove in a run for the Steamers.

Madison Whitmore earned the win, going seven innings and allowing six runs (five earned) and 13 hits while

striking out five. She also drove in a run at the plate.

Madison Scace went 4-for-4 for the Panthers, and Madilyn Schulz and Jordan Streckwald each had three hits.

Jayme Eilers struck out 11 and allowed just two earned runs and five hits to lead Sterling to a 6-2 win at LaSalle-Peru on Tuesday.

Eight different Sterling players had at least one hit. Maddie Corwell had two hits – including a home run – and three RBIs, Genea Garza picked up a pair of singles.

Grace and Gretchen Gould both had two hits, while Cara Alexander drove in two runs.

BASS FISHING Pearl City advances to state SAVANNA – The Pearl City bass fishing team took third place at the Mississippi River Pool 13 Sectional meet Thursday, reeling in a combined weight of 18 pounds, 1 ounce.

Team members are Mitchell Brinkmeier, Zach Lieb, Collyn Kuberski and Wayne McClaran.

Geneseo won the meet with a haul of 21 pounds, 12 ounces.

The state meet will be May 18-19 at Carlyle Lake.

WOMEN’S GOLF Workman to play at Carl Sandburg

Jaeden Workman announced Friday on Twitter that she will be on the golf team at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg.

Workman, a 2017 graduate of Morrison High School, played golf for 4 years in high school. She finished tied for 26th at the state tournament in 2015 as a junior, and tied for 27th at state as a sophomore.

The governor, his opponent in November, and all state lawmakers must make it a priority to make dramatic changes to the way we fund public schools in Illinois. The status quo is untenable.

roperty owners in Illinois are paying some of the country’s highest property tax rates, and they are doing it largely to support public schools, which account for about two-thirds of local tax bills.

Complaints about property tax rates are nothing new in Illinois, but the Great Recession and the

devastating effect it had on property values have made the situation untenable. In response to property value declines around the state, property tax rates simply went up.

Tax cap laws, designed to protect homeowners in a time of value inflation, left them exposed when values tanked.

Changing this should be at the top of the legislative agenda in Springfield. Gov. Bruce Rauner has proposed a property tax freeze, giving residents the power to reduce their taxes through a popular vote, and a proposal to change pension payouts.

of businesses. Regarding safety, my opposition is selfish. I do not welcome the liability inherent in sharing the roads with ATVs. Many rural road locations are unforgiving of a lapse in attention or judgment. The outcome of a collision, even at 35 mph, will be decidedly unfavorable for the smaller vehicle and deadly to its occupant(s). Also lacking in the current plan is a curfew or restricted hours/days of use.

Allowing ATVs use of our roads, excuse me, “the trail,” after dark adds to the danger and probability there will be impaired riders on our roads, joyriding private property, and being a general irritant to those living within earshot.

What I really don’t get is the “why.” Riding ATVs on gravel roads while choking on dust doesn’t fit the designed purpose of the vehicle nor does it sound like fun, unlike riding real off-road vehicle trails. If it’s the “wind in your face” part, a motorcycle makes more sense and doesn’t require any special accommodation.

I encourage the board to create a balanced committee of all the stakeholders that can address the concerns of more than a small group with vested interests. Why the big rush when we could do something better or conclude that it isn’t needed or wanted, at least at this time in this form? Maybe the ATV club could work on connectivity with other trail systems and more interesting routes making the proposal more than what appears to be a bar hopping ride.

Help Center awarded four $500 scholarships to graduating seniors in Carroll County interested in pursuing training at a community college or a vocational-technical school.

Selection was based on financial need, academic achievement and future goals. Funds for these scholarships are derived from memorial funds, donations, and income generated by sales at the Carroll County Thrift Shop in Savanna, which is a cooperative effort of the faith communities in Carroll County.

One of the four scholarships is funded by a memorial donation from the Lois Frank estate. Lois Frank was the first president of the Carroll County Help Center when it was organized in 1972. She died in 2014; a donation from her estate will fund a $500 scholarship for a total of 5 years. Milledgeville High School Senior, Grace Merkel is the third recipient of the Lois Frank Memorial Scholarship and received her scholarship on May 2 at the Milledgeville High School Awards Night. Grace will pursue a program at Educators of Beauty College of Cosmetology.

Three additional $500 scholarships to Carroll County seniors will also be given. Recipient Katie Hoffman from West Carroll High School will attend Highland Community College to study animal science and received her scholarship May 2 at the West Carroll High School Awards Night.

From Eastland High School, Jared Wilczynski will commence a course of study at Highland Community College in the field of prosthetics. Nate Strong will pursue a career in welding. The Eastland Scholarship & Awards Night will be at 7 p.m. today.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR More voices, thought needed in ATV ‘trail’ discussion To the editor: Admittedly, my understanding of the proposed ATV trail is limited to the reporting by our local papers and the route received in a recent mailing by the county engineer.

If any statements below are in error, please accept my apology in advance. We live on our property, which adjoins the trail on either of its proposed Ashby Road or Scenic Bluff routes. I’d like to share my concerns.

If quoted in context, I’m surprised at statements attributed to some of our board members. Comparing a tractor parade with day-to-day operation of ATVs and ORVs on public roads is disingenuous. A parade is a planned single event. Other use of roads by unlicensed vehicles, in our area at least, is generally associated with agricultural equipment. Stating that an ATV trail is “inevitable” completely misses the point of having local representative government control, e.g. the county board, to make exactly those decisions. In addition, I would like to see or obtain a link to the study that reports a “mind blowing” $15 million annual benefit from a trail. When evaluating studies, credibility depends on the source, supporting data, and methods used to develop conclusions. That $15 million figure blows my mind as well. Another suggestion was a 1-year trial that’s simply a gesture to deflect or mollify opposition and an excuse for a lapse in planning.

Once established, the trail will be here for good.

In its current form and for several reasons, I oppose the trail.

We favor solutions that will not impose new taxes on our citizens and will offer them some relief.

There is waste in state government — consider the more than $1.1 billion Illinois has paid in late-payment fees since July 2015.

Legislators in the Illinois House last month did approve a proposal that would require the starting salary for full-time public school teachers be at least $40,000 a year beginning with the 2019-20 school year. They did not make any accommodation for school districts that might not already meet this minimum, though.

The change could lead to consolidation of school districts, higher property taxes, or both. Too often, lawmakers issue decrees and leave it to the folks back home to figure out how to afford them.

Teachers are not shutting down our schools the way they have in several other states this spring.

Illinois teachers are among the best-paid in the Midwest, earning an average salary of $61,342 a year, according to a 2017 report from the National Education Association. Only Michigan paid its teachers marginally more a year on average.

The way we finance our schools, however, places an undue burden on people with lesser means to

pay and creates unequal access to education around Illinois. It also creates barriers to attracting and retaining businesses.

Quality schools are a must for Illinois children — all of them.

Reducing school property tax rates is the only way to make any significant change in the burden on homeowners. The urgency is enhanced by changes to federal tax law that cap deductions for state and local taxes at $10,000.

Simply increasing another type of tax or fee without offering meaningful reductions in property taxes will not do.

Illinois needs a dramatic change to the status quo in Springfield.

This election year, all voters should seek candidates who offer the best plans for reducing the burden on property owners while maintaining and improving the quality of our schools.

MAINTENANCE MECHANIC Bay Valley Foods has an opening for Maintenance Mechanic at its Dixon, IL facility. Five years manufacturing maintenance experience required - packaging, canning and/or food processing preferred. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with good communication skills, the ability to learn quickly, mechanical trouble-shooting skills, an understanding of mechanical procedures, the ability to read and work from blueprints, sketches, and/or electrical schematics, and a familiarity with cutting and welding. PLC knowledge is a plus. Candidates must pass a written test and be willing to work overtime and any shift as dictated by the facility's needs. BVF - Dixon is a union facility, offering benefits that include medical/dental/vision and life insurance and a 401(k) plan with a matching contribution.
