New assignment for Fulton High principal Tennyson taking post with Regional Office of Education BY PHILLIP HARTMAN Prairie Advocate phartman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5525 FULTON – Fulton High School’s principal will start a new job in July, but his focus will remain the same: making sure students are successful. After 5 years as Fulton High School’s principal, Christopher Tennyson, 48, will become the assistant regional superintendent at Lee-Ogle-Whiteside Regional Office

of Education on July 1. Tennyson, who’s also a former Dixon High School assistant principal, will take over for Janet Kacvinsky’s post when she retires. Kacvinsky, 66, of Rochelle, said she plans to come back part time as the principal at the ROE’s Nachusa Campus School. The site offers alternative placements for children in Lutheran Social Services of Illinois’ drug and alcohol treatment program at the campus, a bus-in program for children with social and emotional issues across the three counties, and a regional safe school program for Lee County students who’ve been expelled or are at risk of expulsion. Tennyson’s new duties will include

helping schools find qualified personnel, helping with staff licensing and professional development, and making sure school buildings are safe. “I’ve gotten to know Christopher [Regional SuperintenTennyson dent] Bob Sondgeroth. He asked me to come over. It’s very important to me that all the schools in the three counties receive all the assistance they can,” Tennyson said. Tennyson is proudest of how the River Bend district has grown. “We put a big focus on increasing dual credit opportunities, giving students with every opportunity to

graduate from high school with one to three college classes completed,” he said. Tennyson also has served as the state director of the northwest region of the Illinois Principals Association for 3 years. He and his wife, Angie, live in Morrison, and Tennyson has three stepsons. The River Bend School Board was set to vote Tuesday on whether current FHS assistant principal and athletic director Robert Gosch, 30, will become the new principal when Tennyson moves on. A Dixon native with a science background, Gosch became the assistant principal in August. He and his wife, Kelly, have a daughter, Evelyn, 3.

The Eastland High School senior is one of 23 Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities students who are putting their products on display and up for sale at Northland Mall this week. The event started Tuesday and concludes today.

Anastasia’s business, The Butterfly Effect, is her way of combating human trafficking. She was inspired after meeting a girl who was victimized. “I’ve been really passionate about human trafficking, I really hate it,” she said. Her business model is to sell shirts, hats and sweatshirts at @_._ butterflyeffect on Instagram, and donate 20 percent to Skyway Railroad (skywayrailroad.org), which

bills itself as a nationwide church combating the ills surrounding poverty, addiction, trafficking, crime and mental health. The rest of the money she raises will go to making more apparel. The aim is to spread awareness that trafficking is a problem everywhere, and that people are not property. “This is a real issue. LETTER OF THANKS ALAN L. HEISLER

MOUNT CARROLL – Wilma Pauley, 90, of Mount Carroll, passed away Friday, April 27, 2018, at Good Samaritan Society – Mount Carroll. Wilma was born May 13, 1927, in Mount Carroll, the daughter of Glen and Mary (Zillhart) Edwards. She attended Lanark High School, graduating with the Class of 1945. On April 18, 1948, Wilma married Elmer Pauley. They celebrated 52 years of marriage until Elmer’s passing in 2000. Wilma was a gourmet and restaurant cook for 37 years in the Mount Carroll area, until retiring in 1989. She was a member of Junior Women’s Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, Mount Carroll Church of God, and the Women’s Christian Service Club. Wilma loved serving her community by volunteering her time at the food pantry, and helping with mobile meals and food drives. In honor of veterans, she sold poppies every Memorial Day. Wilma will be dearly missed by her two daughters, Dana (Ron) Rogers of Lanark and Marna Pauley of Freeport; a son, Allen (Linda) Pauley of Highland Village, Texas; three grandchildren, Erin (Chad) Lamm, Marques (Alyssa) Pauley and Kent Pauley; a great-granddaughter, Ellen Lamm; a great-granddaughter “on-the-way,” Aubriana Pauley; a brother, the Rev. Herbert Edwards of Warren, Indiana; and a sister, Doris (Kenneth) Geisz of Lanark. Wilma also was preceded in death by both parents, Glen and Mary; her brother, Laverne (Merna) Edwards; and sisterin-law, Ruth Edwards. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Mount Carroll Church of God. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll. MOUNT CARROLL – Alan Lee Heisler, 96, of Mount Carroll, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2018, after a 2-week stay at Good Samaritan Society-Mount Carroll. Alan was born Aug. 10, 1921, in Lanark, the son of Oliver and Ruth (Bloyer) Heisler. He was raised on the family farm near Mount Carroll and attended Kingery Country School. Alan then graduated from Mount Carroll High School with the class of 1939. On June 10, 1945, Alan married the love of his life, Hazel I. Smith. They raised three children and celebrated 58 years of marriage. Hazel passed away Sept. 23, 2003. Alan farmed for several years. He then joined his father in business, operating Heisler Sand and Gravel Company near Mount Carroll. Alan later operated Heisler Stone Quarries, which was continued by his sons until 2004. He served as the Salem Township Road Commissioner for 22 years, and then beginning in 1993, he served on the Salem Township Board of Trustees until 2016. Alan was a member of Mount Carroll Church of God. Alan was an avid Chicago Cubs

Eastland senior Maddy Weaver has a practiced hand when it comes to making hemp bracelets. Hers vary in size and design and utilize beads as a nice touch. She’s honed her skill for years at church and summer camps, and now is using her hobby to make a quick buck.

“We go the idea when I went to Colorado and had an amazing crepe,” Clodfelter said. Being able to take their product places without an expensive food truck was a big plus, although in the beginning, the two weren’t the crepe aficionados they are now. “First couple of times we made them for the class we were learning how to hold a frying pan and making a perfect circle,” Clemens said. Their favorite flavors are fluffer-nutter, chocolate-peanut butter and marshmallow; they will be serving them in a “breakfast in the afternoon” at the show.

High school seniors, or college students pursing a 2-year degree at Black Hawk College East in either agribusiness management or agriculture production, can apply for two $500 scholarships. Scholarships will be awarded based on achievement, demonstration of community and school involvement, knowledge of agriculture, and the perceived ability to contribute to agriculture in the future. Savanna-Sabula bridge opening pushed back again Safety issues on causeway will delay reopening of new bridge until at least uly STAFF REPORT news@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5501 SAVANNA – It looks like drivers who were hoping they’d be able to shave nearly 40 miles off their trip over the Mississippi River next month will have to wait even longer. The opening date of the the Dale Gardner Veterans Memorial Bridge north of Savanna has been pushed back again. It was announced last month that safety issues on an attached causeway would force the closure of the bridge until late May. Now, the Iowa Transportation Department says the bridge won’t be open until at least July

because of problems with sandy soil. In the meantime, drivers are being asked to cross at Clinton, Iowa, about a 36-mile detour. From Illinois, take state Route 84 south to Fulton, cross the river on the Illinois 136 bridge, and go north on U.S. Route 67 to Sabula. The bridge will be closed until an $8.4 million replacement is in place for a 350foot causeway between Sabula and the larger bridge. A 50-foot portion of the causeway, just east of Sabula, is unsafe. One side of the span settled about 5 inches, while another side settled about a foot, creating a visible change in the bridge deck, Iowa DOT planner Sam Shea said. The settling could be caused by age, high water from recent melting ice, or drilling work done for new piers for the replacement, Shea said. The Gardner bridge opened in November after an $80.6 million replacement project that took 2 years to complete.

Eastland’s 2003 volleyball team to be honored SAVANNA – The 2003 Eastland Cougars Volleyball team will be inducted into the Northwest Illinois Sports Hall of Fame in October as this year’s honor team. The Cougars, coached by Kristy Pierce and assistants Rachael Delp, Jeanette Linker, and Mike Queckboerner, placed fourth in the Class A state finals and finished with 36 wins and seven losses. They were NUIC South Conference champions, and also won the Byron Power Classic and the Stillman Valley Tournament that year. Players on the team were: Chelsey Bunyer, Alicia Chesney, Cassie Cummings, Britney Dickman, Kaylan Dietz, Larissa Ellis, Libby Hartman, Calli Jo Heckman, Whitney Ludwig, Chelsea Schrader, Callie Schriner, Jaime Schriner, Ariana Smith, Kelly Stettner, Alicia Sturtevant, and Laura Wilkins. Bunyer, Heckman, and Callie Schriner were tri-captains. The squad joins the 2000 softball team as the only other Eastland team honored.
