Savanna Rotarians prepare scholarship raffle fundraiser PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF SAVANNA – Rotary Club of Savanna members are selling raffle tickets to benefit the club’s scholarships for West Carroll High School seniors.

The club will hold five days of drawings during the week of April 30, with ticket proceeds to increase the amount of scholarship money presented May 2 at the West Carroll Senior Awards Night.

There are 25 chances to win, and more than 25 tickets will be sold.

Savanna Rotarians award three scholarships each year to West Car-

roll seniors. The General Scholarship is for $2,000, while the Berneice Hussey and L.B. Hussey scholarships are for $1,000 each. West Carroll seniors can receive an application form from their guidance counselor.

Tickets cost $20 each, and can be purchased at The Answer, 319 Main St.; Mest Manor, 525 Third St.; and RIA Credit Union, 103 Third St., or from any Rotary Club of Savanna member.

Each day during the week of April 30, five winners will be drawn and announced on WCCI Radio.

Each day’s winners will be eligible for the following day’s

drawing, making it possible to win more than once with each ticket.

IN BRIEF Violence awareness training open for cosmetologists, others MOUNT CARROLL – Riverview Center will offer 1-hour awareness and training courses about domestic violence and sexual assault to area salon professionals.

In a news release, center staff wrote that the Cosmetology Renewal License Domestic Violence Course became state law on Jan. 1, 2017. The law requires cosmetologists, estheticians, nail technicians, and hair braiders to complete a 1-hour continuing education course to renew their 2-year licenses.

The law is under review by the state’s Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, with the rules expected to be adopted some time this summer.

Once adoption takes place, Riverview Center will begin to provide continuing education trainings to professionals throughout Carroll and Jo Daviess counties.

MOUNT CARROLL – William Lee “Bill” Schall, 64, of Mount Carroll, died suddenly on Thursday, March 22, 2018, at Morrison Community Hospital.

William was born Sept. 14, 1953, in Savanna, the son of George and Virginia (Walter) Schall. He attended Mount Carroll High School and graduated with the class of 1971. After graduation, William attended Western Illinois University in Macomb. He married the love of his life, Kathleen A. Sweitzer, on April 21, 1973, in Lanark.

William was a hardworking man and enjoyed life’s simple things. He worked at Atwood, later Dura Manufacturing in Mount Carroll, and for Swiss Colony in Savanna. He also worked nights at Big

Meadows Nursing Home before recently retiring. William was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He loved the outdoors, especially gardening, hunting, fishing, and hiking. He also enjoyed photography, reading, and listening to rock ‘n’ roll. Most of all, William treasured spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

William will be dearly missed by his wife, Kathleen of Mount Carroll; three children, Elizabeth (Tony) Timm of Mount Carroll, Amanda (Steven) Honchell of Mount Carroll, and Robert Schall and Bill Lombardi of Charlottesville, Virginia; six grandchildren, Roman, Jessica, Jennifer, and Nathan Timm, and Kathleen and Nicole Honchell, all of Mount Carroll; his parents, George and Virginia Schall of Richmond, Kentucky; and two sisters, Karen (Michael) Reynolds of Berea, Kentucky, and Teri

Pearl City, West Carroll students tops in livestock, dairy judging PRARIE ADVOCATE STAFF MOUNT CARROLL – Local high school FFA students competed March 17 in the Section 1 Livestock and Dairy Judging contests, held at the Carroll County Highway Building.

Pearl City won the livestock contest with a top score of 1,397, and swept the top five individual honors. Nikki Adolf led Pearl City with 478 points, Addison Keltner was second with 472 points, followed by Drake Musser (467), Jase Sheffey (458), and Garrett Handsaker (447).

Eastland was runner-up with a score of 1,276, led by Bradly Johnson’s sixthplace finish (442) and John Morgan’s eighth-place finish (434). West Carroll was third (1,264), led by Olivia Charles’

Orangeville (1,249) finished fourth, followed by Forreston (1,237), LenaWinslow (1,212), Stockton (1,103), and River Ridge and Galena (410 each).

Orangeville won the dairy contest with 878 points, four more than runner-up West Carroll, who was led by Charles’ first-place finish (309 points) and Riley Getz’s fifth-place finish (296).

Le-Win finished third as a team (868), led by Rachel Young’s fourth-place finish (298) and Sage Huneke’s eighthplace finish (294). Stockton (828) was fifth behind Galena (831), and led by Haley Brudi’s third-place finish (300) and Kendra Scace’s tenth-plce finish (289).

Experts forecast ‘broken record’ year of high yields, low prices

For Prairie Advocate Barring big changes in production and demand, farmers are likely to see high yields and low market prices continuing into the 2018 season.

That follows a trend of record-high yields for corn and soybeans but lean margin years from depressed prices.

The United States Department of Agriculture estimates that 2017 corn yields in Illinois were 201 bushels per acres, up four bushels from 2016, and soybeans yields at 58 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from 2016.

That’s another record-high yield for corn, and soybeans saw a record-high production of 612 million bushels.

In Iowa, last year’s corn yields are estimated at 202 bushels per acre, the second time Iowa’s average corn for grain yield has gone above the 200 bushels per acre mark, and the soybean crop yielded 56.5 bushels per acre.

At 10 million acres planted, Iowa saw the most planted acres to soybeans since 2006.

Corn and soybean prices are projected to be relatively similar to the past 3 years and lower than the 2007 through 2014 period when the projected price averaged $4.93 per bushel.

Planning numbers for farmers remain in the mid-$9 range for soybeans and mid-$3 range for corn, and fall delivery bids are near $3.60 per bushel for corn and $9.60 per bushel for soybeans.

“At this point, futures prices suggest that the 2018 projected (crop insurance) price for corn will be near the 2017 price of $3.96 per bushel,” Gary Schnitkey, an agriculture economist at the University of Illinois, said in December. “The 2018 projected price for soybeans likely will be near but lower than the 2017 projected price of $10.19 per bushel.”

Prices could take a hit if the nation pulls out of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which President Donald Trump has suggested,

Prices could go up, but it would take a sizable production problem in the U.S. or South America.

Lee Schulz, an agriculture economist at Iowa State University, said many issues surrounding crop markets the past few years are likely to repeat this year.

“Large crop supplies have been produced globally,” he said. “Crop demands have reached record levels, but crop stocks continue to build.”

Farmers have been able to break even or turn a small profit during the trend, though it’s critical farmers are prepared for another lean year by cutting costs and improving efficiency.

very similar in each year since 2015,” Schnitkey said. “Given that trend yields are received, projected prices are at levels that, at best, reflect marginal profitably on many farms.”

Putting in early and bulk seed orders could help with costs as seed prices continue to rise.

Another trend likely to continue this year is converting more and more corn acreage to soybeans, which have a more favorable price ratio for farmers as well as higher yields.

“Since 2012, acres in the U.S. have been shifting out of corn and into soybeans, likely as a result of higher returns for soybeans than for corn,” Schnitkey said.

Between crop yields that were much bigger than expected to a significant weakening in the U.S. dollar, there has been no shortage of surprises. Crop futures have been surprisingly stable.

Fertilizers have been relatively more volatile in recent months.

Most of the price movement has been up; prices are higher than six months ago. Where fertilizer pricing goes yet, pre-spring and through spring, will depend a lot on demand here in North America.

China, as discussed in recent months, has been a big factor in fertilizer market action to date. It has continued to keep production rates for nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers scaled way back. Its exports are down hard, and what had been an important supply source has been

virtually nonexistent, especially since last summer.

That’s definitely helped support prices to date – for urea and other nitrogen products (as nitrogen product differentials tend to be correlated over time) and for DAP/MAP. Demand has also been strong globally. Brazil’s imports of nitrogen, phosphates and potash keep spiking higher. New global production capacity ex-China has come online, but that’s just kept things in check so far. New U.S. nitrogen plants that should have been up by now have had “fits and starts” issues and are not supplying much.

Now here we are on the cusp of spring. For a fertilizer distributor and/or a retailer, the question is, how much supply should you position in anticipation of spring demand? Fall demand for P and K was surprisingly strong – big yields drove more consumption, which makes sense. Fall NH3

demand was up as prices bottomed, and November/December weather was conducive to application.

But spring demand for nitrogen, in particular, has been weak the past two springs, and replacement prices have been very weak by the end of spring into summer. Owning carryover inventory in that environment is not much fun, and corn acres may be down this year compared to 2017.

The risk is that fertilizer demand surprises us this spring and overwhelms the “light” supply positioned across the marketplace, and/or the global supply/demand balance tightens substantially more over the next month or so and constricts import supplies still needed for spring. Base case/most likely case is that things will be fine and supply will be in good shape. But stay close to your retailer as we go, as there are still a number of “moving parts” to the spring fertilizer market.

Carroll 4-H Federation plans outing at Dubuque, Iowa, park

Mississippi waterfowl viewing planned

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Carroll County 4-H Federation will have a fun day from 1:40 to 3 p.m. at Vertical Jump Park, 555 J.F. Kennedy Road, No. 400, Dubuque.

The cost is $5 for 4-H members and volunteers, $13 for family, and an additional $4 for an additional hour of jumping.

Eagle group sets annual meeting APPLE RIVER – Eagle Nature Foundation’s annual business meeting, award ceremony, and fundraising luncheon will be in the basement of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 105 W. Webster St. A silent auction will start at 11 a.m., with a pulled pork luncheon at 11:30 catered

by Sidetrack Café in Apple River. The cost is $20. A live auction will begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by the announcement of the silent auction winners and a 50-50 raffle.

A reminder to drivers IOur drivers would like to remind everyone: When it is foggy or raining, remember to drive with your headlights on.

Do you qualify for Extra Help with your prescription drug cost?

What is Extra Help with Medicare prescription drug plan costs? Anyone who has Medicare can get Medicare prescription drug coverage.

Some people with limited resources and income may also be able to get Extra Help to pay for the costs – monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription co-payments – related to a Medicare prescription drug plan. The Extra Help is estimated to be worth about $4,000 per year. Many people qualify for these important savings and don’t even know it.

To qualify for Extra Help: • You must reside in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia; • Your resources must be limited to $14,100 for an individual or$28,150 for a married couple living together.

Resources include such things as bank accounts, stocks, and bonds. We do not count your home, car, personal possessions,

life insurance, burial plots, irrevocable burial contracts or back payments from Social Security or SSI.) Your annual income must be limited to $18,090 for an individual or $24,360 for a married couple living together. Even if your annual income is higher, you still may be able to get some help. Some examples where you may have higher income and still qualify for Extra Help include if you or your spouse: —Support other family members who live with you; —Have earnings from work; or If you have Medicaid, a Medicare Savings Program or you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you should get Extra Help automatically. NICAA Golden Meals program has expanded its services to include more home delivery routes in the Shannon area, for the town of Shannon and the rural areas surrounding it. The home-delivery program is for any senior citizen aged 60 or over who would benefit from having a meal delivered to their home on a daily basis.

Transportation Carroll County Transportation now has three buses and six vans, all wheelchair accessible.

CCT provides transportation for citizens of Carroll County, for meals, medical appointments, shopping, and errands throughout Carroll County, and will make trips to Freeport, Sterling, and Clinton, Iowa. We also have added medical appointment trips to Monroe, Wisconsin, and Rockford with a 3-day notice.

If you need a ride, call 815-244-0011 at least 48 hours in advance to schedule your trip. For shopping trips, there is a 5-bag limit due to space issues. The service is supported by your donations to help offset the unfunded expenses, which continue to increase daily We provide this service to assist those who no longer drive or would rather have someone else do the driving. New Medicare cards are coming in 2018 New cards will automatically come to you in the mail. This has been put in place to remove all Social Security numbers from your cards for your identity protection. There will be no gender and no signature line on new cards, and the cards will

arrive in an HHS envelope.

Please be aware: No one will call you for your information.

If you receive a call about your new Medicare card, IT IS A SCAM! New cards will start being mailed in April 2018 and all will be replaced

by April 2019. So watch your mail, and shred your old Medicare card as soon as you get your new one. If you do not have access to a shredder, bring your old card to the Carroll County Senior Center and we will shred them for you.

Seniors Around the County The Table The Great River Outreach Table is part of the Great River Outreach Center in Savanna and offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the former Chestnut Park School, 926 Viaduct Road, south of town on state Route 84.

In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church, 216 S. Main St. Any age is welcome.

Donations are accepted but not required.

The food is brought to Mount Carroll on Wednesday. Volunteers are involved in this endeavor. Why eat alone? Consider joining the group often!

Vintage 405 Lanark UMC has launched a new group within the Lanark community.This will be called “Vintage 405” and will reach out to those in our community who are lonely and need social interaction. We will offer games, coffee and refreshments, as well as space for conversation. It is air conditioned and heated for comfort.

This space will be open and available on the first and third Thursdays of the month from 9 to 11 a.m. The dates and time may change if we see that more time or dates should be added.

Are You Turning 65?

Do you need help understanding Medicare A, B, C and D? Then come and see us at the Senior Center. We will help make this time easier for you.

Turning 65 can be very confusing with all the information you receive in the mail about which Medicare D Plan to take or which supplemental to get. If you are about to turn 65 and have questions, stop by and see our SHIP Counselors, Deb Connor and Karen Holm, and we can help you sort through the confusion.

Also remember to stop at the Carroll County Courthouse to complete your Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption application and affidavit.

When you turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare, the best time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period. Your IEP includes the 3 months before, the month of, and the 3 months following your 65th birthday. If you enroll in Medicare during this time, you will avoid late enrollment penalties.

The date when your Medicare coverage begins depends on when you enroll during your IEP. For your coverage to begin as soon as possible, it is best to enroll in the first 3 months of your IEP. Your Medicare coverage will then go into effect starting the month you turn 65.

To enroll in Medicare, please stop by the Senior Center and we can do this for you. It is important to be proactive and take the steps to enroll during your IEP. If you miss your IEP, you may be limited to specific times when you can enroll in Medicare in the future, and you may face a penalty for late enrollment, resulting in higher premiums.

The Answer: Controlling your high blood sugar

MARK KLEIN Fitness Nutrition Counselor High blood sugar/glucose has become a common medical concern for a growing number of people, particularly among the older population.

With age comes various changes in our physiology. Some changes cannot be controlled, but others are modifiable through lifestyle changes or medication.

High blood sugar can be controlled through medication, but your doctor will normally begin by suggesting modifications to your diet and activity level. The good news is, a few adjustments may keep you from being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

A fasting blood glucose measure-

ment above 100 mg/ dl may alert your doctor. More importantly, a trend in rising blood glucose over years may be more indicative of a path toward type 2 John Voelz diabetes.

At this point, you may be advised to decrease your carbohydrate intake and get more exercise. If lifestyle changes don’t lower your blood glucose, and your next fasting test is above 126 mg/ dl, you may be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and your physician will likely start you on a medication.

Chronically high blood sugar can be extremely dangerous especially over the long term. Blood vessel and organ damage lead to more serious health conditions that can be life-threatening. If addressed

early enough, dietary changes and exercise can slow or reverse the rise in blood glucose, and the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes can be avoided.

Luckily, this common chronic health condition is quite revers-

ible.

Small dietary changes are important. Carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, and potatoes as well as simple sugars (cakes, cookies, etc) dramatically increase blood glucose.

Decreasing your intake of “carbs” is vital in lowering blood glucose.

Also, eating smaller portions more frequently throughout the day helps to stabilize your blood glucose level, and allows you to “burn them off” through daily activity.

Exercise is also very important.

Carbohydrates remain in the bloodstream if they are not “burned off” through activity. Unfortunately, if not used for fuel, these carbs are conveniently stored as fat. Walking 30 minutes per day will not only use up many of these circulating carbohydrates, but will also prevent them from being stored as excess fat. Exercise has the added benefit of raising your metabolism – this means that carbohydrates and fat are even utilized while you’re resting!

If you are struggling with high blood sugar, borderline type 2 diabetes, or you have been diagnosed with diabetes and are on medication, small dietary changes and regular exercise are extremely important. There are many informative websites that can help guide you, or check with your local healthcare providers for a plan that you can follow.

Wildcatz find new head coach

Former Warren coach set to lead Eastland-Pearl City

Jared McNutt, football coach and athletic director at Warren High School, was approved by both the Eastland and Pearl City school boards Wednesday to take over the Wildcatz’ football cooperative.

McNutt replaces Randy Asche, who stepped down after 11 years at the helm to focus on his day job at Lanark Ag. “I’m looking forward to getting my feet wet, meet the guys, and get the coaching staff all aligned,” McNutt said. “I’m looking forward to getting things rolling and get going.”

The Warren football program was in limbo, similar to several of the smaller programs in the NUIC, in regard to numbers.

Talks with co-oping with nearby Black Jared Hawk High School in McNutt South Wayne, Wisconsin had been going on during the off-season, and the Warren School Board announced Wednesday that they will be make the partnership official.

Uncertain of his status as head coach, McNutt looked elsewhere.

“Our school decided that with our numbers situation that they were going to co-op in a couple of years, and I just didn’t know the outcome of my position,” McNutt said. “I wasn’t sure what was going to happen with me, so I saw that [the EPC] position was open, and put my application in for teaching and coaching, and it just all worked out for the better.”

basketball and baseball. He played football for the Warren-River Ridge co-op, and made a 2A playoff appearance in 2005. After high school, McNutt starred at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he set Division-III passing records and led the Kohawks to a 10-0 season in 2012 as team captain.

After graduation, McNutt served as wide receivers and quarterbacks coach, and was one of their main recruiters at Coe for 1 year, then moved to Ottumwa, Iowa and spent 1 year as an assistant football coach.

He was hired at Warren in 2015, and led the Warriors to their first playoff win in school history – a 26-20 win over Hope Academy in Chicago.

McNutt’s Warriors squads finished 2-7 and 1-8 in the past two seasons in the NUIC Upstate Division. They operated a balanced pack-it-in and spread-it-out offense, and McNutt looks to bring that same style to the Wildcatz.

“With our conference, we need to be able to pack it in and run with the best with them, and also be able to spread it out when we need to,”

McNutt said.

Eastland-Pearl City went 84-33 during Asche’s tenure, and won a 2A state championship in 2014. Last year’s team finished 5-5, losing to Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 50-14 in the first round of the playoffs.

McNutt becomes the fourth coach in the cooperative’s history, along with Asche, Bill Johnson (1997-2007) and Doug Johnson (1996).

Eastland athletic director Scott Hartman was impressed with the way McNutt communicates with kids, and noted that he is patient and “willing to work.”

“He’s coming into a tough position,” Hartman said. “Randy left the program in great shape, and had a ton of success. I think for any coach, that would be tough to come into, but I think Jared’s willing to take that on, and ready to take that on.”

Eastland High School will host a meet-and-greet with McNutt from noon to 1:30 p.m. April 8 in the school cafeteria. McNutt will discuss the program’s expectations, and will take questions. Cookies and drinks will be provided.

Milledgeville’s Ottens let his play do the talking in unprecedented season

BY ADAM FEINER Sauk Valley Media afeiner@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5550 Any time he drove to the hoop or pulled up for a shot, Kyle Ottens would stick his tongue out or tuck it into his cheek.

The Milledgeville senior’s mannerism is reminiscent of another star basketball player who did the same thing in Illinois: Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan.

Jordan accomplished things unseen before in a Bulls uniform.

Ottens, like Jordan, succeeded in a Milledgeville uniform in a way no Missile ever had.

The one striking difference between the two is obvious. Jordan was as good at getting into opponents’ heads with his words as he was slashing for a layup. Ottens plays with a similar ability to take over games whenever he pleases, but he never lets anybody know how good he is through words.

“I’ve never been much of a trash talker or one who shows off too much,” Ottens said. “I just like to play the game. The biggest trash talking you can do is win.”

There’s no question where Milledgeville coach Brad Grenoble ranks Ottens in program history.

“He’s No. 1, no doubt. And it’s not because I got lucky enough to coach him,” Grenoble said. “Kyle did it the right way; he could shoot, drive inside, and simply take over games.

He’s the best we’ve ever had here.”

••• The argument can be made that another similarity between Jordan and Ottens is their running mates.

At first glance, one might think that senior Cade Schave played a role that Scottie Pippen did alongside Jordan. However, where Pippen was the No. 2 to Jordan, Ottens and Schave took turns being the No. 1 option for the Missiles.

“He’s been my best friend for as long as I can remember,” Schave said of Ottens. “We’ve played so many games together, it’s ridiculous. A lot of times, he’ll have his nights, and I’ll have mine. We know when to shoot, pass or drive.”

In grade school, Ottens and Schave would round up a few friends to play pick-up games at Ottens’ house. Schave said the two fought several times after some rough play, but their friendship has stood the test of time.

“We still do it every once in awhile, but not as much as we used to,” Ottens said. “Any time we saw someone walking home from school, we’d call them over to play.

We wouldn’t call fouls, so we were hacking each other. That taught us to get stronger with the ball.”

Grenoble was the Milledgeville fresh-soph coach when Ottens and Schave entered high school, a time before the duo became stars.

Instead, Grenoble recalled a game against River Ridge where Schave couldn’t catch a pass, and Ottens would dribble the ball off his shoes.

However, the clumsy moments quickly started to give way to the ball instead being dribbled through legs and swishing through the net.

“With practice comes confidence, and with confidence comes success,” Ottens said. “I never thought about developing. I just wanted to help my team win.”

“We lived in the gym. We always worked on our shots,” Schave added. “All I remember is waking up every day and going to shoot when I could.”

Ottens and Schave truly dedicat-

ed themselves to the game in the summer of 2017. The two would call Grenoble to open the Milledgeville gym so they could work on their shots, and when the coach closed up shop, the two still hoisted shots on the Millwheel Park tennis courts’ rusted rims.

“You can’t be as good as they are without putting the time in,” Grenoble said. “They put the work in, and then they’d go to AAU ball and put that time in. They’re great kids, great students and great in the community.”

••• Ottens took his game to a new level in his final year as a Missile. He averaged 24.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 5 assists, 4.5 steals and 1.2 blocks per game, all while helping lead Milledgeville to a program-record 24 wins and its first regional title.

The postseason accolades piled up for Ottens, as he was named to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 1A second team, was tabbed a 1A second-team allstater by the Associated Press, and was a unanimous selection to the

NUIC East first team for the second year in a row.

Ottens became a starter as a sophomore, averaging 13.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.7 assist and 1.5 steals per game on his way to the NUIC East second team.

Last season, he took a huge leap forward, with averages of 19.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.4 steals per contest. Ottens’ skill to take over a game was on display in the regional semifinals, as he (21 points) and Schave (14 points) outscored Stockton in a 47-33 win.

“I think if Illinois high schools had a shot clock, we’d have won even more games because those are two guys who could create their own shots,” Grenoble said. “It’s pretty easy to coach when you have two all-state guys. It’s pretty special to have kids like that.”

Milledgeville finished the 201617 season with a 20-9 record after losing to East Dubuque in its next game, which Ottens said fueled the Missiles’ fire to win a regional crown.

Last year, the 6-foot-3 forward’s mood was much more somber than it is today.

Schave had to step away from football for good in the fall of 2016 after doctors noticed a major heart problem. Medical professionals soon cleared him to resume practicing, but after 3 weeks of grueling work to try to get into shape, Schave found out he had been misdiagnosed, and that he would need surgery to take care of the issue.

After 7 hours under the knife, Schave eventually returned to even better form.

“I was told I would probably never play basketball again,” Schave said. “Once I got into shape, which was tough, I could contain it with medicines and monitoring it all the time. I needed to get back out there. I couldn’t leave my teammates.”

In addition to being his basketball coach, Grenoble is also Schave’s uncle. Months after receiving a call from his sobbing nephew, Grenoble saw Schave’s conditioning improve daily.

“The doctor pretty much fixed him,” Grenoble said. “Last year, we would be running sprints and he would have to sit down because he’d get dizzy or heavy-footed. This year, I don’t remember one episode.”

Schave’s heart problem wasn’t the only time his senior season flashed before his eyes. He caught the flu and rolled his ankle in early January, around the same time that junior sharpshooter Blayne Kappes also missed time with an ankle injury.

A lack of health ultimately led to Milledgeville’s worst game of the season, when the Missiles suffered 52-34 defeat at Forreston on Jan. 8.

“The bus ride there, you could just tell we weren’t ready to go,” Schave said. “They really took it to us. They were more physical than us. That was definitely the turning point in our season.”

Just how bad was it that night?

Milledgeville had just two firsthalf rebounds, and didn’t make a basket until the 5:10 mark in the second quarter. Forreston’s Brandon Schneiderman out-rebounded the Missiles 13-12 for the game, prompting Grenoble to call it the worst performance he’d seen to a reporter postgame. Milledgeville’s Cade Schave was named to the Sauk Valley Media’s All-Area First Team along with Ottens. Schave averaged 21.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1.2 blocks per game this season, earning NUIC East first-team honors and an all-state honorable mention nod from the Associated Press. Newman sophomore Devon House was also on the first team. The Associated Press 1A All-State first-teamer averaged 18.3 points per game and 9.3 rebounds, and led the Comets to a third-place finish at the Class 1A State Finals. Micah Kendrick represented Sterling on the second team. Fulton’s Tyler Bruggenwirth, Eastland’s Ethan Christians, and Newman’s Cade Gorzny and Travis Williams were named to the third team. Morrison’s Ben Brackemyer was given Special Mention, as well Faith Christian’s Trevor Hauck, who is from Shannon. Newman coach Ray Sharp was named the newspaper’s Coach of the Year. and Kyle Aude.

“That night I was mad, but the next day, I told them it was on them,” Grenoble said. “They knew they could be special. We got a little lazy in practice, and we took shortcuts. Those shortcuts caught up to us in the game. I told them we were either going to get back up really fast or fade really fast.”

Milledgeville started the season 9-0, and won the Oregon Thanksgiving Tournament (beating Newman, Kewanee, Rockford Christian and St. Bede in the process) for the first time in program history. After losses to Byron and Newman at the Forreston Holiday Tournament, the Missiles fell completely flat.

“In the beginning of the year, all our shots were falling, and I think we took that for granted,” Ottens said. “In that Forreston game, we realized we couldn’t shoot our way to a win. We had to step it up on the defensive end. It also made us realize we have to take every game seriously.”

••• The Missiles lost at Aquin on Jan. 16, prompting a switch to man-toman defense by Grenoble. Flipping defensive strategies proved to be flipping the season’s recent script.

Milledgeville ran off 10 straight wins to finish the regular season, including a Jan. 20 home win over AFC in which Ottens broke the program scoring record. He needed just two points to pass Scott Kent, but finished with 26. Three days later, Schave hung 30 points on For-

reston in a 27-point home win over the Cardinals.

While Ottens and Schave ran the show, others started to settle into roles.

“The kids knew they had to get the ball to Ottens and Schave. But we just had to get to practice,” Grenoble said. “We needed Blayne and Carson Boyer to shoot. Blayne had no issue with jacking it up, but we told Carson to be more confident and shoot. We told Jack Munz to just play D and that he didn’t have to score, but then he started shooting and hitting shots.

“Nate Rahn is really a star all his own. He can shoot from the outside, he’s a man inside, and he can play D. If he puts any effort in this summer, he’s going to be really good.

And we’ll need him to be.”

Rolling into the 1A Amboy Regional, Milledgeville crushed Paw Paw in the quarterfinals and dominated AFC in the semifinals.

Ottens – like Jordan – thrived when the stage grew larger, evidenced by a performance in the regional final against Indian Creek that people in Milledgeville will talk about for decades to come.

“We knew [Indian Creek] was really good on the ball, but they had no help D,” Grenoble said. “We told Kyle to just take it to the hole. He did it a little bit in the first quarter, then he started to get hot in the second. We told Kyle at half to just take over. As a coach, you just sit back and watch like a fan.”

Ottens scored a career-high 47

points against the Timberwolves, while Schave chipped in 14 points in the 68-63 victory.

“I think it came down to confidence,” Ottens said. “I had a ton of energy in warm-ups. I had never had that much energy before a game before.”

“When he sees he’s scoring at will, I let him do his thing,” Schave said of Ottens. “He doesn’t force very many shots. I’ve seen him pull up from the volleyball line, and he’s seen me do it. It’s crazy.”

••• Ottens capped his high school career with 13 points, four rebounds and five assists in a 52-47 loss in the 1A Eastland Sectional semifinal to the same East Dubuque players who knocked the Missiles out of the postseason in 2017.

Schave scored 14 of his team-high 16 points in the second half, nearly willing the Missiles to the Sweet 16.

Ottens ended his Milledgeville career with 1,701 career points, though Grenoble joked with him that he should’ve stopped one point short, “so it would look cooler on a plaque.”

A new chapter on the hardwood awaits Ottens, as he is still deciding between Division III Aurora University or Sauk Valley Community College. Schave already signed with the Skyhawks. No matter where he ends up, Ottens said he’s excited to see how much better he can get in another 4 years.

••• Kyle Ottens never showed much emotion on the court; never begging referees for calls or slapping the floor defensively. Fans who saw him play will instead have to recall the way he glided into the lane or elevated for a dagger 3.

One moment that Ottens will always remember will be when he realized all of his accomplishments and contributions to Milledgeville basketball.

“It hit me the night after we won the regional championship,” Ottens said. “After the season, I was really proud of the team. It’s crazy how fast 4 years went by, and it’s crazy to see how much the program changed.”

SOFTBALL HIGHLIGHTS FRIDAY Serena 16, West Carroll 11: The Thunder scored the first five runs of their only game at the Lenz Field Jamboree in Jacksonville, but a pair of Huskers’ comebacks were too much in a slugfest loss.

Riley Sullivan took the loss, allowing 10 runs (four earned) and six hits in four innings. McKenna Sullivan led the Thunder offense with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate.

Malachi Stanton’s fifth-inning home run led the Huskers’ offense. Brianne Engel struck out 11 and allowed nine hits in the circle, and was 2-for-4 with three RBI at the plate.

The Thunder’s games Saturday with Newark and Morris were cancelled due to severe weather conditions.

MONDAY Forreston 12, Morrison 2, 5 innings: Allan Meinsma’s 2-run double in the top of the fifth allowed the Mustangs to avoid a shutout against the Cardinals in Forreston.

Mitch Heinz and Brandon Schneiderman each hit 2-run homers for Forreston (3-1). Jaron Groshans was 3-for-3 and scored four runs.

Amboy 8, Milledgeville 1: Alison O’Rourke drove in five runs on a double and a triple to hand the Missiles a NUIC East road loss.

Dani Hochstatter had two hits, including a home run, for Amboy. Bailee Highbarger picked up the win in the circle, and also had two hits.

Aquin 7, Eastland 2: The Bulldogs used three pitchers to stymie the Cougars’ offense in an NUIC crossover game in Lanark.

Tanner Giedd stuck out five batters over six innings for Eastland. Kaden Henze had two of the Cougars’ three hits, and Ethan Christians had both RBIs.

Pearl City 14, Lena-Winslow 4 (5 innings): Tia Clark collected four hits and earned the win in the circle for the Wolves in an NUIC West win over the Panthers.

Lena-Winslow scored the game’s first four runs before the Wolves scored 14 unanswered.

Clark struck out six and walked none in a complete game.

Zoe Johnson took the loss for the Panthers, and struck out seven in five innings.

Riverdale 5, Newman 3 THURSDAY Milledgeville 8, Amboy 7, 8 innings: Brad Grenoble picked up his 100th win in a NUIC East game in Milledgeville.

The Missiles jumped out to a 6-1 lead after two innings, saw the Clippers come back to tie the game in a four-run sixth inning, then won the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Ali Schmidt and Mady Frederick doubled and Alexis Janssen won it with a hit to shortstop to drive in pinch runner Holly Smith.

Ciarra Miller struck out 11 in 7 2/3 innings in the circle for Milledgeville.

Miller also had three hits and drove in a run. Schmidt was 4-for-4 at the plate.

Natalie Brown, Jacquelyn Folkers and Janssen each drove in two runs.

For the Clippers, Bailee Highbarger struck out seven. Savannah Ikens had three hits. Shannon Lytle had two hits and two RBIs. Eastland 15, West Carroll 5, 6 inn.: The Cougars exploded for 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning, while the Thunder couldn’t answer in Thomson.

After nearly 9 years as a member of the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference, Sterling High School will compete in the Western Big 6 Conference starting with the 2019-20 school year. During a Sterling School Board meeting March 21, the school’s administration made the decision to accept an invitation sent by the Western Big 6 for membership.

Sterling will be joining a league that has not grown or subtracted in its nearly 50-year existence, until now. Galesburg, Moline, Quincy, Rock Island, United Township of East Moline, and Alleman Catholic of Rock Island are the original six schools. The Golden Warriors have competed in nonconference competition against all but Quincy in various sports at various times in the past 25 years.

Sterling was left with an uncertain future as far as conference membership is concerned after five of the 10 schools in the NIB-12 announced in December their intention to leave the conference. Four of those schools – LaSalle-Peru, Morris, Ottawa, and Rochelle – will join a revamped Interstate 8 Conference in 2019.
