City rejoins tree group after 7-year absence PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF MOUNT CARROLL – The New England of the Midwest has branched out again.

Mount Carroll is once again a Tree City USA member, returning to the list after 7 years of not applying.

City Clerk Julie Cuckler said the designation will help the city get

grant opportunities.

Alderman Mike Risko led the drive to reapply, primarily based on the Frances Wood Shimer Arboretum on the grounds of the Campbell Center. The arboretum opened in November 2012.

“Now that we have an arboretum at the old Campbell Center, we’re trying to grow our tree population.

This is just another step in saying we support planting trees,” Risko said.

The city plants about 10 trees each year around sites where city staff removed old trees “It’s a way to raise attention that we care about trees,” Risko said.

According to the Tree City website, more than 3,400 communi-

ties nationwide have met the four core criteria – maintaining a tree board or department; having a community tree ordinance; spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry; and celebrating Arbor Day. The council will next meet at 7:30 p.m. March 13 at City Hall, 302 N. Main St.

Bridge closed near Savanna; drivers asked to take 36-mile detour

BY PHILLIP HARTMAN Prairie Advocate phartman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5525 SAVANNA – Safety issues on an attached causeway have forced the closure of the Dale Gardner Veterans Memorial Bridge north of Savanna, probably until late May. The bridge will be closed until an $8.4 million replacement is in place for a 350-foot causeway between Sabula and the larger bridge, the Iowa Department of Transportation said.

The Gardner bridge opened in November after an $80.6 million replacement project that took 2 years to complete.

Travelers are being asked to cross at Clinton, Iowa, about a

36-mile detour. Illinois drivers can take state Route 84 south to Fulton, cross the river on the Illinois 136 bridge, and go north on U.S. Route 67 to Sabula.

A 50-foot portion of the causeway, just east of Sabula, is unsafe. One side of the span settled about 5 inches, while another side settled about a foot, creating a visible change in the bridge deck, Iowa DOT planner Sam Shea said.

The settling could be caused by age, high water from recent melting ice, or drilling work done for new piers for the replacement, Shea said.

Officials already were planning to replace the causeway, which was built in 1933, but hadn’t planned to tear down the current span until early April.

Kloeppings celebrating 50th anniversary Gary and Patti Kloepping of rural Shannon will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

They were high school sweethearts and were married March 9, 1968, at Lanark Church of the Brethren. Gary farms at the family’s dairy farm west of Lanark, and Patti is a Realtor with RE/MAX Town Lake & Country, Lake Carroll.

Pearl City Boy Scout honors fellow Eagle PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF PEARL CITY – A Pearl City Boy Scout will receive his Eagle Scout award medal and badge Sunday, after helping to commemorate a fellow Scout.

Matthew M. Bronkema took part in June 2016 for a funeral for Eagle Scout Leo Gerke. Bronkema, who became a Tiger Cub Scout at 6 years old, was working on his final Eagle Scout community service project.

He ordered a bench from Doty and Sons in Sycamore for Salem Cemetery near Loran. Bronkema used the balance of his Scout account to purchase the bench, and received a

Scout discount from Doty and Sons.

One of the company’s owners helped Bronkema select the wording, “In honor of Eagle Scout Leo Gerke, Matthew Bronkema, Eagle Scout Project 2017.”

On Dec. 2, Bronkema finished assembling the bench and planting perennials near it, with help from family, friends, neighbors, and other Boy Scouts. He completed his Eagle Board of Review on Feb. 12.

To become an Eagle Scout, a boy must complete 21 merit badges by age 18 demonstrating leadership and service, 11 of which are required specifically for the Eagle rank. Bronkema has earned 35 badges.

FULTON – A former Fulton High School student was arrested after police say he threatened a current student, prompting a “soft lockdown” Feb. 27 at all three River Bend School District buildings.

Blake A. Dornbush, 18, of Fulton, who graduated last year, was arrested around 1:30 p.m. He was in Whiteside County Jail, charged with felony disorderly conduct.

He was released after posting bond Thursday. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Monday.

He is accused of threatening unnamed Fulton High students

with unspecified bodily harm, and faces 1 to 3 years in prison if convicted.

LANARK – Cara Lizabeth Aschenbrenner Prowant of Lanark, passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018, at her home, surrounded by family and friends.

Cara was born April 15, 1956, to Conrad and Caralee Aschenbrenner. She had said she loved growing up in a small town with a neighborhood of kids, who were full of energy and imagination. She and her friends were pirates, cowboys, and whatever else they could dream up, and that hot summer nights meant a front yard game of kickball (and some skinned knees and black eyes).

Among Cara’s favorite memories were her years at Lanark High School, and being a cheerleader for the “Fighting Beavers.” It was there, that she met her future husband, Lonnie Prowant, during her junior year. Cara said she thought Lonnie was “pretty cute,” and then asked him to the prom, they married in 1977, and “the rest is history.”

Cara attended Highland and Sauk Valley junior colleges, where she studied horticulture and floral arts. This knowledge added to her natural skill and turned them into the business of “Cara’s Flower Shed.” While in business, she became well-known for her arrangement and design skill, creating many memorable weddings.

After her first son, Karl, was born, and a second son, John, was on his way, she decided she needed to give more attention to her children and became a stay-at-home mom. Cara’s biggest love were “her boys,” big and little sons and grandsons. While her sons, Karl and John, were in school, she always was found on the sidelines at every game, on the stage decorating for all the plays, and hounding the boys to get

their homework done. Most of all she enjoyed seeing Karl and John grow into fine young men, who married two great girls, Sarah and Jessica, whom she came to love as her own. Added to the family, her two grandsons, Benjamen and Kamden, brought her endless joy, and her only regret was not being able to meet her latest grandbaby.

Everyone who knew Cara knows she never did anything halfway. Her passion for decorating and keeping her home, drove her to make it perfect. She constantly was teased for having painted the dining room of her home five different colors in as many days, to “get it right.” Her home and garden always were a sense of pride, and always looked like they belonged in a magazine.

Cara was an avid walker, and enjoyed the many weekends the family spent boating on the Mississippi. Enjoying a variety of projects and constantly improving her decorating skills, her philosophy was “if you do not have it and cannot afford it, make it.” She had been active in the Lanark’s “Cornerstone Project,” and firmly believed her town’s main street was worth saving.

While many photographs through the years show a “scowling Cara,” as she did not like sitting for pictures, she nevertheless said it was a wonderful life, and she was grateful to all that she came in contact with.

Cara Lizabeth Prowant is survived by her husband, Lonnie; sons, Karl Prowant and his wife, Sarah, and grandsons, Benjamen and Kamden, and John Prowant and his wife, Jessica, and her father, Conrad Aschenbrenner, all of Lanark; and sister, Maggie Aschenbrenner and her husband, Mark of Princeton. She also is survived by a good many close and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Caralee Aschenbrenner; and by her mother and father-in-law, Shirley and Arnold Prowant.

DONNA PRITCHARD SHANNON – Donna Pritchard, 71, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2018, at Freeport Memorial Hospital.

She was employed for several years with Burgess Battery Co. Donna was born May 20, 1946, in Sterling, the daughter of Robert E. and Margaret B. (Moore) Schryver.

Survivors include her son, Scott Pritchard of Dixon; two sisters, Margaret (Jim) Totenhagen of Loves Park and Cathy (Ron) Watkins of Keil, Wisconsin; and one brother, Wayne (Karen) Schryver of Milledgeville.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Private graveside services will be at Bethel Cemetery in Milledgeville, with the Rev. Rick Koch of Dutchtown Church of the Brethren officiating. McDonald Funeral Home in Milledgeville is handling arrangements.

EVELYN M. ROACH ROCKFORD – Evelyn M. Roach, 89, of Rockford, passed away Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018.

She was born Sept. 10, 1928, in Forreston, the daughter of Ollie C. and Alice (Kness) Buisker. Evelyn graduated from Shannon High School. She married Austin E. Roach on April 17, 1948, in Shannon. She worked for National Lock Co. from 1952 to 1983. Evelyn was a member of First Free Church and American Legion Auxiliary-Carlson Post 1207.

She is survived by her daughter-inlaw, Debbie Roach; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Joshua; great-grandson, Alexander; sister, Ruth Franson; and sister-in-law, Joyce Buisker.

She was predeceased by her husband, Austin; daughter, Barbara Carol, in infancy; son, Brian; her parents; and brothers, Alvin and Marvin.

A graveside service was Feb. 14 at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Machesney Park.

JOHN A. PETERSON FREEPORT – John A. Peterson, 100, of Freeport, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2018, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.

He was born March 10, 1917, at the farm home in Cherry Grove Township to the Martin and Anna (Gast) Peterson. John married Vera Toepfer on Sept. 28, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa. John was a lifetime

member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ. He was a third-generation farmer in the Pearl City area, and after he retired from farming, he worked as a carpenter and a maintenance man at Lake Carroll. John enjoyed playing cards, woodworking and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Vera; his sons, Randall (Joyce), Richard (Janet), Ryan (Debbie), Reginald (Linda), and Rodney (Nancy); his daughters, Ramona Cruse and Rita (Randy) Brinkmeier; his 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchil-

dren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and son-in-law, Jerry Cruse.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m.

Friday at Hermann Funeral Home in Pearl City. The funeral will be at 2 p.m.

Saturday at Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Pearl City. Interment will be at Ebenezer Cemetery at the church.

IN BRIEF Carroll County receives property multiplier SPRINGFIELD – Carroll County recently was issued a property assessment equalization factor, or multiplier, of 1.0000, according to Constance Beard, Director of the Illinois Department of Revenue.

In a news release, Terry Horstman with the IDR said the factor is the method used to achieve uniform property assessments among counties as required by law.

Under a 1875 state law, property in Illinois should be assessed at a third of its market value. Assessments in Carroll County are at 33.51 percent of market value, based on property sales in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

The tentative factor issued in in December was 1.0000. A change in the equalization factor does not mean total property tax bills will increase or

CGH Health Foundation marks 30 years PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF STERLING – CGH Health Foundation celebrated 30 years of giving on Feb. 21 with its annual appeal at CGH Medical Center, with special recognition given to charter members and Tree of Life donors.

In a news release. Nicole Bollman with CGH wrote that 15 individuals, three businesses and one club were honored for being the only contributors continuing to give today, who also made a gift during the first fund drive.

Foundation Campaign General Chairman Marty Benson announced nearly $360,000 had been raised toward the $350,000 goal. 39 individ-

uals, businesses and groups were honored during the Tree of Life dedication ceremony.

Eight Pine Cone donors, giving $10,000 or more cumulative, and 30 Leaf donors, giving $1,000 or more cumulative, were dedicated on the Tree of Life donor wall and two donors, Robert Stevens and Verna Ward, were added to the Legacy Circle plaque.

Stephenson coroner makes endorsement in 89th District PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF FREEPORT – Stephenson County Coroner Tim Leamon recently endorsed Republican candidate Steve Fricke for the 89th District state representative primary on March 20.

Fricke, of Freeport, is running for the seat after current 89th District Rep. Brian Stewart, R-Freeport, announced his candidacy for the state Senate, with next year’s retirement of current State Sen. Tim Bivins,

R-Dixon. The district includes Stephenson and Jo Daviess counties, as well as parts of Carroll, Ogle, Whiteside, and Winnebago counties.

Freeport Alderman Andrew Chesney also is seeking the party’s nomination.

Fricke is a third-generation farmer from German Valley, current president of the Stephenson County Farm Bureau, and a current Stephenson County Board member. He and his wife, Kim, have two children and four grandchildren.

Missiles’ magic runs out

Milledgeville’s season ended again by Warriors

The Warriors once again prevailed Feb. 27 in a 1A Eastland Sectional semifinal, holding on for a 52-47 victory in which the Missiles showed guts and clutch shooting to nearly pull off an epic comeback.

East Dubuque (29-3) led 34-19 at halftime, prompting a straightforward message from Milledgeville coach Brad Grenoble to his team.

“I told them we were either going to get blown out or make it one heck of a game,” Grenoble said. “They made it a game, and there’s nothing to hang their heads about.

The better team won tonight.”

Milledgeville (24-5) used a 10-0 run to cut it to 37-29 with 2:51 left in the third quarter.

Kyle Ottens connected on a 3 and a floater, and Cade Schave split a pair of free throws, converted a layup, and drained a jumper.

“We’ve been down farther and come back before,” Schave said. “East Dubuque was better than almost anybody we’ve played all year, and they capitalized. That’s the difference.”

Lane Boyer stopped the run for the Warriors, as he found Payton Heller for a layup and drilled a 3 to make it 42-29 Warriors after three quarters.

A putback by Ottens and a layup and jumper by Schave cut the Missiles’ deficit to 42-35 with 6:23 remaining in regulation. East Dubuque’s lead dwindled to 44-40 after a 3 from Schave and a jumper from Nate Rahn.

“Give a lot of credit to Ottens and Schave,” Boyer said. “They’re two great ballplayers.

They hit some tough shots just to keep them in the game. But you’ve got to respond somehow; grind out a possession, get an easy look.”

Jack Munz corralled an offensive rebound off a missed 3 from Schave, and found the 6-foot-3 senior for a 3 from the wing to cut it to 48-45 with 56.1 seconds left in regulation.

Rahn then had a putback off a missed 3 from Ottens with 15.1 seconds to go to make it 50-47 East Dubuque, but the Warriors hit 5 of 8 free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.

“We kind of settled; I would have liked a few more stops after first shots, but those are hustle plays,” East Dubuque coach Eric Miller said. “We did enough to execute and make sure they didn’t get a shot to tie it. Survive and advance, that’s all we’re worried about.”

A Schave jumper and Rahn 3 gave Milledgeville a 7-6 edge halfway through the first quarter before the Warriors went on an 8-3 run to close the opening 8 minutes of action.

Boyer sank a 30-footer at the buzzer to put East Dubuque up 14-10 after one.

“You can’t sit here and say experience didn’t help. We had juniors and seniors tonight who played in regional finals as freshmen and sophomores,” Miller said. “We’re used to the big stage, but we played them last year on a big stage in Stockton.”

The Warriors’ lead reached 23-13 after a pair of buckets by Boyer.

Ottens scored his first points of the game with 3:49 to go in the first half on a blow-by layup, and sank two more buckets to get the Missiles within 10 at 29-19. However, East Dubuque closed the first half strong thanks to a bucket inside from Hunter Sherman and a 3 by Heller at the halftime buzzer.

“They’re just long and athletic,” Grenoble said. “They hit some big shots. That 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter and the 3-pointer at the end of the second quarter were killers.

We just didn’t move our feet well.”

East Dubuque shot 57 percent (15for-26) in the first half, as Boyer had 12 of his game-high 22 points in the first 16 minutes. Sherman had 10 of his 13 points in the first and second quarters.

“We like to get the ball moving,” Boyer said. “You’ve got to try to expose them and take them off the dribble and attack the rim.”

The Warriors were just 4-for-12 from the floor in the second half and 9-for-19 at the free-throw line for the game. Heller chipped in nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Nicholas Kluesner added seven points, two assists and three steals.

The Comets instead had to grind out possessions in the halfcourt offensively, and cover driving and passing lanes on the defensive end, ultimately hanging on for a 46-43 win over the Warriors.

“I thought if it was a game in the 40s, they had the advantage,” Newman coach Ray Sharp said.

“If it was a game in the 60s, we had the advantage.

To win at their tempo was really nice.”

Newman (27-4) led by nine points at 44-35 with 4:33 remaining after a Devon House putback off an airball by Gehrig Koerner. But East Dubuque (294) didn’t flinch in making its comeback, as Hunter Sherman picked up a steal and assist to Payton Heller to cut the Comets’ lead to 44-42. Lane Boyer had a chance to tie it with 36 seconds left at the free-throw line, but missed his second attempt.

“That’s our demeanor. We just stay calm,” East Dubuque coach Eric Miller said. “They expected to be here and wanted to be in this moment. We’ll keep working and try to get back again.”

After an empty Newman possession, senior Travis Williams preserved the Comets’ third trip to the supersectional in 7 years with a steal and pair of clutch free throws with just 6 seconds remaining. Sherman’s 3-point attempt for the tie at the buzzer came up well short.

“I just knew we were going to have to score to win this game,” Williams said. “We knew they were a good team that was going to fight until the end. I knew I needed to make a play. I just saw the ball and went for it.”

Boyer and Sherman hit 3-pointers to give the Warriors a 24-20 advantage early in the third quarter, but Newman answered with a 3 from Cade Gorzny and a steal and layup by Williams.

A 3 from Heller gave East Dubuque a 31-28 edge, but the Comets ended the third on a 7-0 run, as Devon House scored a bucket inside and Gorzny connected on a 3 and pair of free throws.

The pace was set from the opening tip, as both teams seemed content with a game that moved at a snail’s pace in the first half.

“I think both of the teams executed their game plans really well,” Miller said. “We tried to make this a grinder. We tried to take away their middle, and they knew we like to get in the middle and tried to take that away.”

A three-point play by Williams and a 3 from Gorzny gave Newman an 8-2 lead with 3:21 left in the first. The Comets’ advantage grew to 13-4 after another Gorzny 3 and a jumper by Ethan Behrens, but Heller and Sherman came back with a 3 and jumper, respectively.

Both teams spent the majority of the year ranked in the 1A AP Poll. The Warriors returned most of their lineup from last year’s sectional-title squad, while the Comets had to fill starting roles after losing in the 2A regional finals.

“It’s special because [we] graduated five seniors

last year who all started,” Sharp said. “We came back with a new group. They believed, and got it done.”

East Dubuque shot 39 percent (15-for-38) from the field, and was just 5-for-11 from the free-throw line. Heller led the way with a game-high 16 points and a team-high six rebounds.

“I’m always looking to score and stay aggressive,” Heller said. “We got a few good looks, they just didn’t fall. That could be the difference in the game.”

Sherman pitched in 13 points, three boards, two assists and four steals, while Boyer was held to just eight points for the Warriors.

The Comets battled Providence St. Mel on Tuesday at the NIU Convocation Center. The Knights blasted Chicago Douglass 89-50 in the Chicago Robeson Sectional final. The game was played after press time for this week’s edition.

t was President Theodore Roosevelt who said, “Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”

Congratulations to the Stockton girls basketball team and Coach Timpe for finishing second in the IHSA Class 1A State Championship game. Your hard work and determination are an inspiration to many throughout Northwest Illinois. The team finished its season 32-3.

Last week was also National Future Farmers of America Week.

Chapters throughout Northern Illinois were active celebrating the mission of the FFA and the impact it has on its members. The FFA is “committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agriculture education.”

It is inspiring to see so many of our youth strive and succeed. They are our future, and that is why it is so important to reverse two trends, first of focusing our tax dollars and economic incentives on Chicago, and second, of rural population being siphoned to Cook and the collar counties.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The first farmer was the first man. All historic nobility rests on the possession and use of land.” I agree.

Agriculture is an important key to success for Northwest Illinois.

CAPITOL REPORT State Rep. Brian Stewart It was good to see the governor’s budget include level funding for agricultural programs in the Illinois Department of Agriculture and pass through spending for local government agricultural programs.

The capital plan includes new funding for the Illinois State Fair to reconstruct the Coliseum. Originally constructed in 1901, the Coliseum is a three-story, closed ampitheater show ring for horses and has been closed since 2016 because of structural issues.

At the local level, municipalities, townships, and county governments can help spur agricultural growth. The Illinois Farm Bureau recommends emphasizing sales taxes and other forms of revenue instead of property taxes. I agree that our property taxes are too high, and that we should explore alternatives while providing property tax relief for families.

In 1900, 38 percent of jobs in the United States were in agriculture. By 1981, that number had dropped to less than 4 percent of workers and is now less than 2 percent. Prioritizing growth for rural Illinois should include continued

It was the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas who said, “Infrastructure is much more important than architecture.” Investment in infrastructure is essential for both rural Illinois and our agricultural economy to succeed. Currently, the average grade for Illinois infrastructure is C-minus. We need a capital plan that will turn our C-minus into an A. I am encouraged by the Governor’s Rural Affairs Council and its pilot program to provide online Advanced Placement classes to 10 rural schools in Illinois. I was encouraged when they chose Oran-

geville High School as one of the sites for the pilot. Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti has worked hard on this program, and we certainly hope to see it expand across the rest of rural Illinois in a few short years.

Thomas Jefferson said, “Agriculture is our wisest pursuit because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good morals and happiness.” Turning around rural Illinois has to include an emphasis on agriculture. The two go hand in hand.

Naysayers will argue that there is no money, or the money will somehow involve hurting another group. There are always reasons to say no. We can achieve our goals by expanding the Illinois economy, especially our rural economy because that expands our tax base without increasing our tax burden.

The Lanark Public Library is pleased to announce that the March 2018 edition of the Eastland Junior-Senior High School art exhibit in various media is now on display. Each month, Eastland’s art instructor Rachel Todd selects exceptional examples of her students’ work.

It is particularly gratifying when students bring their parents, grandparents or friends into the library to proudly show off their work.

Please stop by during library hours, noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday; noon to 7:30 p.m. Thursday; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday to view yet another fine collection.

The exhibit is just one more way in which the LPL is striving to fulfill its ongoing theme: Branching Out to Serve the Community.

hile planning summer programs this past month, we realized how full summer already is! We just finalized the library programs for the summer, and are working on some other events and ideas! It proves to be another busy but productive summer.

••• At one time the whole month of March was celebrated at National Ag Month, now we celebrate National Ag Week and National Ag Day. This year, National Ag Day is March 21, with the week being March 18-24. In honor of National Ag Week, we are having a coloring contest. We have two different color sheets that are available at the public libraries in the county, at our office and on our website at www. carrollcfb.org. Finished sheets need to be returned to our office by March 15 for judging. There will be three prizes for each age group ,which are broken down into 4-5, 6-7, 8-9, and 10-11.

••• I certainly don’t know how February flew by with the blink of an eye, but it did. With March starting, it means soon spring field work will be upon us along with baseball, softball, track, and who knows what else you have on your calendar for spring. We are again offering up our Freezer Meal Fundraiser. This program has greatly assisted keep our Ag in the Classroom program going.

We are keeping some of the favorites but adding in some more new meals for you to try. The set of 10 meals which feeds up to 5 people (remember this varies on the size of your eaters) are offered at a price of $160 for the set. The menu includes hickory smoked pulled pork, boneless country ribs, smoked pork loin with dressing, cheesy chicken & rice, beef enchiladas, chicken burrito bowl, baked mostaccioli, shepherd’s pie, ham & potato casserole, and pizza subs.The pizza subs are personally my favorite! While I try to not eat them often, I love the crispness of the bread along with melted cheese, and the saltiness of the meats.

••• The Cubs trip sold out, and sold out quickly! While I heard some of you would have preferred going to Wrigley instead of Miller Park in Milwaukee, it was a timing decision. Don’t worry, we will head back to Wrigley again. It just so happened that with the crazy sum-

mer, this worked better.

For those looking for a longer trip, don’t forget we have a vast array of trips for you to partake in.We have a Northwoods Trip set for August 14-18 that still has seats available.

We are also offering two trips with Lindstrom Travel. One is a Hawaiian cruise in April 2019. The other is a trip to go see the Tournament of Roses Parade, leaving Dec.
