Water tower painting presentation delayed

A planned presentation by Fehr Graham Engineering on plans to paint the inside and outside of the tower was tabled for 2 weeks at the

City Council’s Feb. 20 meeting.

“Fehr Graham was not ready to come in with the next part of their presentation,” Mayor Ken Viglietta said.

The tower still has its original coat of paint from 1999. The repaint is estimated to cost $300,000 to $500,000, with some updating of inside components, valve replacement; and other maintenance.

Alderman Brad Knutti said pre-

viously that the project would take about 8 weeks, with work possibly starting in the fall or spring 2019.

Viglietta said while the city has the money to pay for the whole project, it would take it below the $800,000 reserve limit.

“There’s a $135,000 water-only bond that would be applied,” Viglietta said. “We would probably ask for a small loan from the bank. We hope not to pass it along to consumers.

We’re hoping to pay off the loan out of future revenues.”

In action items, the council approved the purchase of a new Chevrolet Tahoe with a police equipment package.

“We will be able to get 4-wheel drive. It’s about $23,000 with the trade-in,” Viglietta said.

The council next meets at 7:30 p.m.

Energy aggregation remains a charged topic in Illinois

BY TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate A growing number of Illinois communities and counties are aggregating their residents’ buying power for electricity, and the process can result in real savings for Carroll County consumers.

“The State of Illinois passed a law in 2007 which enabled the communities or governmental units to band together to pass a referendum which allowed them to legally go out and obtain a price for customers from approved energy suppliers,” said Mike Mudge, a managing partner of Rock River Energy Services, which is an intermediary between power providers and consumers.

Mudge said Fulton was the first community to take advantage of the energy aggregation process by passing the required referendum and then soliciting bids.

“There are now about 800 communities in Illinois that are signed up and participating in the program,” he said. “Carroll County has over a thousand energy customers signed up, and there are more than that in Jo Daviess County. We’ve found a good rate each time we’ve gone out to bid, and that is reflected in our numbers of participators.”

RRES groups similar communities when they solicit bids, which Mudge said makes them more attractive to suppliers.

“To do that we used a resolution,” he said. “The resolution says that since everybody meets at different

So, what the resolution does is let a board authorize a county chair or designee or village president or city manager to sign a contract. What we do then is get on a conference call and get the bids. We discuss it, and as a group we decide on the terms.”

RRES does regular price comparison shopping with ComEd in this area.

“ComEd’s rates change every June, and people have the choice to stay on ComEd or go with a community rate or find a supplier on their own,” Mudge said. “Customers can go back and forth as they choose, but the key to aggregation is based on the number of participants because suppliers are willing to bid so they can get attractive bulk rates.”

Unfortunately, there are times when there are no savings by going with an aggregator, so it is important to do the math when making your decision.

“Those people that knock on your door or contact you by phone usually do not have large numbers of participants, so they cannot offer rates based on bulk,” Mudge said. “You could actually end up paying more than if you were to stay with ComEd or enter into a contract as an individual.”

Other factors can affect savings.

“In 2017, ComEd’s rates were around 7.1 or 7.2 cents; the year before that their costs came down and we had some long-term contracts that we had locked in 2 or 3 years back,

so that third year was higher for us, but overall and since the beginning our rates have always been lower than ComEd” Mudge said.

The Carroll County Board approved a 3-year rate with RRES in December and that process is underway in Jo Daviess County.

“Last year we put Shannon, Lanark, Milledgeville, Forreston, and German Valley together in a group, and that worked well,” Mudge said. “We are looking at further combining of the municipalities and counties in the future, probably 3 years down the road for the counties. But that will provide us with a much larger group.”

Carroll County Administrator Mike Doty said there can be real sav-

ings through electrical aggregation.

“You are not locked in for the duration of a contract,” Doty said.

Anyone can pull out at any time if they see a better rate.”

Mudge said RRES will help people make informed decisions about energy aggregation.

“Part of our job is to help people see where they are at,” Mudge said.

“They may be with their own supplier, or they may be on ComEd and we will let them know what their options are, so they can decide what they would like to do.

“The beauty of the program is that they can sign up or leave when they want. History-making season ends one win short of state title

The Blackhawks may not have been the first to cross to a state championship finish, but what the girls will remember most will be the journey that got them there.

Stockton’s season ended in the 1A state championship game with a 53-31 loss to Danville Schlarman, but no Blackhawks’ girls basketball team had advanced as far as this year’s team did.

The runner-up finish leaves Stockton a championship short of a complete set of state trophies. Terry Korth coached the Blackhawks to a third-place finish in 2001, and Bob Wyssman coached them to a fourthplace finish in 1993.

“Getting here, we didn’t think we could. We did, and we were like, ‘Okay, let’s do it,’” Blackhawks senior center Emily Offenheiser said. “We wanted to end on a high note. It didn’t end as we wanted it to, but we’re just happy to be here.”

Turnovers doomed the Blackhawks (32-3) early, as they turned the ball over on each of their first four possessions. After the third turnover, Schlarman was up 6-0 and didn’t look back.

lived. The turnover bug hit the Blackhawks once more, and Schlarman capitalized to lead 30-16 at halftime.

Stockton finished the second half with 12 turnovers, and added 10 more turnovers in the third quarter as Schlarman ran away.

Offenheiser led the Blackhawks with 12 points and five rebounds.

“We just dribbled the ball too much,” Stockton coach Tim Timpe said. “We talked about having to pass and not dribble through them.

We kept dribbling, dribbling, dribbling, and you can’t do that against a good, fast team.”

Stockton made history Friday with a 58-43 semifinal win over Okaw Valley. Offenheiser and Timpe each had a double-double; Offenheiser score 16 points and pulled down 17 rebounds, and Timpe scored 16 points and pulled down 10 boards.

Elizabeth Eisfeller added 10 points.

Okaw Valley was led by senior guard Paige Robinson and her 32 points, but while she was tough for the Blackhawks to stop, they stopped enough of her game to move on.

“We knew that Okaw Valley had that really good No. 3 [Paige Robinson],” Offenheiser said. “We really tried to focus on stopping her. We did an OK job – obviously we won – but we really wanted to make school history because no one had made it to the championship round, and we kept thinking that as we were playing that game. It was all heart from there.”

Offenheiser and Stewart are seniors, as well as Megan Gille and Kali Haas. Timpe, a freshman, and Eisfeller, a sophomore, ranked among the Blackhawks’ top five scorers.

Murder charges in DCFS worker’s death New charges filed against Rock Falls man last week

BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ Sauk Valley Media kschultz@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5535 MOUNT CARROLL – The Rock Falls man who investigators say kicked a DCFS worker in the head, causing severe brain damage and her eventual death, now faces five counts of first-degree murder.

Pamela Knight, 59, of Dixon, died Feb. 8 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago of “complications of blunt force head injuries due to assault,” the Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled.

Andrew Sucher, 25, of Rock Falls, was indicted Thursday on the new charges, and appeared in Carroll County Court on Friday to hear them. His bond also was increased to $1 million.

Sucher faces 20 to 60 years in prison without probation, unless aggravating factors that might extend his sentence are determined, in which case he would face 60 to 100 years, up to life. He would not be eligible for any day-for-day or “good” time; he would have to serve the full term.

Among the aggravating factors that qualify for the more severe sentence is killing a person while committing another felony.

Sucher can be convicted of only

one count of murder.

Carroll County State’s Attorney Scott Brinkmeier has charged him with five counts, each of which has different elements that must be proven – Andrew essentially, that Sucher Sucher intended to kill or do great bodily harm to Knight (or knew that his actions would do so); or that he knew his actions created a strong probability of causing her death or great bodily harm.

Multiple counts of the same charge are common in homicide cases, because it gives jurors different theories of the crime to consider when deciding guilt.

Sucher still also is charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and aggravated battery of a state employee, each of which carries 2 to 5 years in prison – seven felony charges in all.

He initially was indicted Dec. 7 on three counts – the two battery charges, as well as attempted first-degree murder.

Also Friday, Judge John “Jerry” Kane placed a report on Sucher’s mental evaluation under seal, and set a hearing for 1:15 p.m. March 9, at which time Sucher’s public defender, Colleen Buckwalter, will decide if she wants a fitness hearing based on its contents.

The purpose of the report, done at Buckwalter’s request by Dr. Joel Eckert of Peoria, is to help determine, among other things, whether Sucher is fit to stand trial, is able to

aid in his own defense, and whether he was sane at the time of the attack of which he is accused.

Brinkmeier noted Friday that all defendants are presumed fit, and said he didn’t see anything in Sucher’s evaluation to indicate otherwise.

Because Buckwalter requested the evaluation, though, it is her decision whether to request a fitness hearing, and she had not yet had time to talk to her client about it, she said.

Sucher also is charged with aggravated battery of a peace officer, which carries 3 to 7 years.

Officials say he was being moved to another cell in the Carroll County Jail on Dec. 19 when he became “verbally combative” and punched Chief Deputy Craig Dimmick in the face. He subsequently was transferred to Stephenson County, where he remains.

Bond in that case is $75,000.

The 6-foot-4, 270-pound Sucher is accused of fracturing Knight’s skull, causing permanent brain damage that also led to extensive physical disabilities.

In the 4 and a half months since the attack, she underwent five “major surgical procedures.” She spent the first 2 months in a coma, and in the last few weeks of her life was being treated at Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in Chicago, trying to learn how to communicate using eye movements and undergoing physical therapy to help her regain movement in her arms and legs.

At the time of her death, “she could move her left finger half an inch and her neck to the right a few inches.

She couldn’t talk, she couldn’t walk, she couldn’t eat or swallow,” her daughter, Jennifer Hollenbeck, said in Facebook postings.

She was admitted to Northwestern Memorial 4 days before her death for unspecified emergency surgery.

The veteran Department of Children and Family Services worker, who was based in Sterling, was taking a 2-year-old into protective custody that day.

She went to Sucher’s home first, with a police escort, and when no one was there, she went to his parents’ home in Milledgeville, which is in another county and police jurisdiction. She did not ask for assistance from village police.

She was attacked shortly after she got out of her car around 5:45 p.m. ​Sucher also has pleaded not guilty in Whiteside County to aggravated battery of a child, which carries 2 to 5 years, and battery, domestic battery, and interfering with the reporting of a domestic battery, all misdemeanors.

He is accused of dragging a 6-yearold by the foot and striking him in the face with a squirt gun, and of throwing a woman against a wall and taking her phone in a July 29 incident.

He was out on bond in that case when Knight was attacked. It’s on hold while the Carroll County cases proceed.

The bills, which make up the Economic Development for Illinois’ Future legislative package, are: • House Bill 5469 –Designed to foster job creation and retention in the state, the bill would provide a tax credit for 25 percent of Illinois labor expenditures made by manufacturing companies. The Illinois Department of Revenue would be authorized to award the credit to employers who apply and meet the labor expenditure criteria.

• HB 5503, the Illinois First-Time Homebuyer Savings Account Act – First-time homebuyers could open a savings account to pay or reimburse costs connected to a quali-

fied home purchase.

Taxpayers would be allowed an annual credit for amounts deposited into the account, up to $2,000 for individuals and up to $4,000 for married State taxpayers.

Rep. Tony • HB 5736, the McCombie Employer and Community College Tax Credit – The bill would promote community colleges’ development of certain job training programs by awarding a credit of 1.5 percent of wages paid by employers to participating employees during the employee’s first year of participation in the program.

The bills are awaiting assignment to appropriate House of Representatives committees for further consideration.

McCombie serves the 71st district, which includes parts of Carroll, Henry, Rock Island and Whiteside counties.

1969-2018 DAVIS – Darla Sue Reifsteck, 49, of Davis, unexpectedly went home to her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018.

She was born Jan. 8, 1969, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Dean and Mary (Brandt) Kistler. She graduated from River Ridge High School with the Class of 1987. Darla attended Illinois State University and Rock Valley College. She received her bachelor’s degree from Rockford College, and went on to receive her master’s from National Louis University. Darla taught at Dakota Elementary School and others area schools. She most recently taught for the Freeport School District, where she worked for the last 10 years.

She was a former member of Dakota United Methodist Church and currently attended Faith Community Church of

Davis. She also was a member of the National Education Association. Darla enjoyed hiking, scrapbooking, and adding to her high-heeled shoe collection, a hobby she truly had a passion for. Most of all, she loved spending time with her girls, especially running them around to various places. She was a loving mother, not only to her girls, but to many others as well. Darla will always be remembered for her ability to make people laugh.

She is survived by her daughters, Kaitlyn, Jacalyn, and Madalyn Reifsteck and their father, Karl Reifsteck, all of Davis; her mother, Mary Kistler of Hanover; father, Dean (Frieda) Kistler of Parkers Prairie, Minnesota; sisters, Debbie (Tim) Callahan of Schaumburg, Dawn (Terry) Switzer of Lena, and Denise (Andy) Brotzman of Galena; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Vishal Malhotra of Sugar Grove.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and mother-in-law.

A celebration of Darla’s life was Feb. 18 at Faith Community Church in Davis.

Eastland and East Dubuque were the only two teams to beat the Blackhawks until Saturday. Stockton played three games with the Cougars, and won two of three. They won tournaments at Forreston and Erie during the season, and it was only after the Erie tournament in December did some players think that something special might be happening.

“We knew we’d be good, and then we started beating teams that we had never beaten before,” Offenheiser said, “and we started winning tournaments we’d never won before, against bigger and better schools.”

“After that, we got confidence and we knew that we could come down here,” added Stewart, a co-captain.

Stockton advanced to state Feb. 19 with a 67-64 win over Harvest Christian of Elgin at the Belvidere Supersectional. Timpe led the Blackhawks with 26 points.

“We thought we were good about the middle of the season and we could make a run, but these girls have just given me everything since the start of the season,” Tim Timpe said, trying to hold back tears after the team received the second-place trophy Saturday. “I can’t say enough about them. These four seniors wanted this so bad to get down here, and I’m just super happy for all of

Illinois politics are broken To the editor, Our political system has been taken over by big money and special interests. Whether on the state or federal level, the voices of ordinary citizens are not heard. This is a fact; our democracy is broken.

This is not a partisan issue. It is not a right or left problem. It is our problem and it is up to us to fix the system.

Wrestling is quite possibly mankind’s oldest sport. Early depictions of wrestling appear on millennia-old cave drawings in France, ancient Babylon, and Egypt. It is referenced in religious texts like the Old Testament and the Hindu Vedas. Wrestling became an ancient Olympic sport in Greece,

was popular in Rome, and flourished in Western Europe before coming to North America.

Many consider wrestling to be one of the most difficult sports there is. Collegiate and Olympic wrestling legend, Dan Gable, says, “More enduringly than any other sport, wrestling teaches self-control and pride.”

Screen actor and former wrestler, Channing Tatum says, “In wrestling, there is no retreat. No way to slow things down. In wrestling, you advance and advance, and being tired is just a lie to make the other guy think he can relax. It’s so hard – harder than anything I’ve ever done.”

A wrestling match consists of two people of nearly, if not exactly, equal weight using a series of defined holds and maneuvers to

subdue the other. While contemporary wrestling incorporates a series of points to calculate each wrestler’s “score,” the ultimate victory is when one wrestler forces the other wrestler onto their back with both shoulders touching the mat at the same time.

The governor introduced his budget last week. The budget is balanced, and requires, among other things, a shift in pension costs from the state to local school districts in equal increments over a 4-year period.

There are proposals for tools covering the cost of the pension shift, and even providing more savings to school districts and taxpayers in the process. As reported in The Journal-Standard, “The tools include increased education funding, the power to dissolve or consolidate units of local government and more flexibility in contracting, bidding and sharing services.”

As we can expect, sides are drawing up, and people are preparing for the whistle to signal months of budget struggle. I believe we can do better than that.

It is easy to say no. It is easy to believe that our challenges are too high to climb, and all we can expect is a cycle of tax and spending increases to fuel the status quo.

Instead of explaining why we think an idea won’t work, shouldn’t we ask whether the idea is a good one?

Otto spelled dyslexia to close the win.

In late May, Otto and one guardian will be sent to Washington, D.C., to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Otto won multiple prizes from Scripps and Regional Office of Education 8. The ROE and area sponsors will pay for Otto and her guardian’s trip.

Also if you have applied before please check with us to see if it is that time of the year to reapply for your license plate discount.

Remember to bring proof of all income for 2016 (i.e. 1099 from Social Security, or your 1040 or 1040A income tax form, etc.) to complete your license plate discount application.

Transportation Carroll County Transportation now has three buses and six vans, all wheelchair accessible.

CCT provides transportation for citizens of Carroll County, for meals, medical appointments, shopping, and errands throughout Carroll County, and will make trips to Freeport, Sterling, and Clinton, Iowa. We also have added medical appointment trips to Monroe, Wisconsin, and Rockford with a 3-day notice.

If you need a ride, call 815-244-0011 at least 48 hours in advance to schedule your trip. For shopping trips, there is a 5-bag limit due to space issues. The service is supported by your donations to help offset the unfunded expenses, which continue to increase daily We provide this service to assist those who no longer drive or would rather have someone else do the driving. Beyer receives award

Allen Beyer from Savanna retired after 20 years of volunteering for the Senior Center. Allen was also involved in RSVP, (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program), from which he received a certificate. Allen recently received the Presidents Call To Service Award in recognition for his volunteer service. We are going to miss Allen here at the Senior Center, and want to thank him for his many years of service. Savanna people will miss him picking up their papers also.

What’s Happening at CCSSO & CCT The AARP Volunteers started doing taxes on Monday, Feb. 12, and their appointments are full. Due to the schedule being full, the Tax Volunteers are adding 2 days to the schedule, Friday, March 9, and Friday, March 23. The last day for taxes will be April 11.

The Senior Center and Transit will be closed on Friday, March 30, in observance of Good Friday.

Our first Defensive Driving Course will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 23-24. More details will be in the April Grape

Vine.

We have two new volunteers answering the phones for us. They are Bonnie Howard, from Mount Carroll, and Louise Kallemeyn, from Thomson. There is a picture of all of our office volunteers in this edition of the Grape Vine. They are a tremendous help to us.

Friday, March 2. This coffee time has turned out to be very successful and an enjoyable time for our veterans.

volunteer to take over the Senior Center Trips and someone to volunteer to take care of the Gift Shop. Please contact me for further details.

We are very blessed to have all the wonderful volunteers we have here. Without all the volunteers, we

The Table The Great River Outreach Table is part of the Great River Outreach Center in Savanna and offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Monday through Friday, at the former Chestnut Park School, 926 Viaduct Road, south of town on state Route 84.

In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church, 216 S. Main St. Any age is welcome. Donations are accepted but not required.

The food is brought to Mount Carroll on Wednesday. Volunteers are involved in this endeavor. Why eat alone? Consider joining the group often!

Vintage 405 Lanark UMC has launched a new group within the Lanark community.This will be called “Vintage 405” and will reach out to those in our community who are lonely and need social interaction. We will offer games,

coffee and refreshments, as well as space for conversation. It is air conditioned and heated for comfort. This space will be open and available on the first and third Thursdays of the month from 9 to 11 a.m. The dates and time may change if we see that more time or dates should be added.

Are You Turning 65?

Do you need help understanding Medicare A, B, C and D? Then come and see us at the Senior Center. We will help make this time easier for you.

Turning 65 can be very confusing with all the information you receive in the mail about which Medicare D Plan to take or which supplemental to get. If you are about to turn 65 and have questions, stop by and see our SHIP Counselors, Deb Connor and Karen Holm, and we can help you sort through the confusion.

Also remember to stop at the Carroll County Courthouse to complete your Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption application and affidavit.

Craft items needed We have had a great response to our request for craft items being donated to the Senior Center, and want to thank all those who have donated. Your donations are truly appreciated. To make a donation of a craft item, please drop them off at the Senior Center between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Frida at 306 N. Main St., Mount Carroll.

When you turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare, the best time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period. Your IEP includes the 3 months before, the month of, and the 3 months following your 65th birthday. Your IEP will span from December 2017 to June 30, 2018. If you enroll in Medicare during this time, you will avoid late enrollment penalties.

The date when your Medicare coverage begins depends on when you enroll during your IEP. For your coverage to begin as soon as possible, it is best to enroll in the first 3 months of your IEP. Your Medicare coverage will then go into effect starting the month you turn 65.

To enroll in Medicare, please stop by the Senior Center and we can do this for you. It is important to be proactive and take the steps to enroll during your IEP. If you miss your IEP, you may be limited to specific times when you can enroll in Medicare in the future, and you may face a penalty for late enrollment, resulting in higher premiums.

Activities at the Senior Center Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center.

Tax Preparation will be on Mondays and Wednesdays by appointment only at the Senior Center, 306 N. Main St., Mount Carroll, through Wednesday, April 11 The tax filer is required to bring a photo identification, and all the required documents to ensure the correct completion of their tax return.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service in the nation certified by the IRS.

Do you qualify for Extra Help with your prescription drug cost?

Extra Help is the federal assistance program that helps individuals with limited finances pay for their Medicare prescription drug costs.

In 2016, individuals who receive $1,485 or less each month and have $13,640 or less in assets should qualify for Extra Help. In 2016, couples who receive $2,003 or less each month and have $27,250 or less in assets should qualify for Extra Help. (Do NOT count your home, vehicles, personal possessions, life insurance, burial plots, irrevocable burial contracts or back payments from Social Security or SSI.) If you have Medicaid, a Medicare Savings Program, or you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you should get Extra Help automatically. Free help available via Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) The Illinois Department on Aging’s (IDoA) Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIºP) is reminding seniors of the free counseling assistance available to Medicare-eligible individuals and their caregivers during Medicare Open Enrollment through Dec. 7.

“Probably the variability in yields is what surprised me most. On the top end, we had some of our best yields ever on good ground that was able to hold the moisture during the dry spell in August and September. Most of the time, it was fairly cool, so the plants weren’t stressing the good ground. Those ended up being some of the best soybeans we’ve ever harvested. On the other side of the spectrum, on the ground that was lighter soils, it didn’t have the subsoil moisture there for the plants and it’s been a long time since we have had yields that low on the bottom end.

Next year, we might rent more good ground, I guess.”

“For the lack of heat, you know, we had what you would consider a cooler season. The quality of the grain that is out there, good yields. I would like to repeat this year again [next year]. Spray worked good. We’re a little concerned about how late the season is, but that’s the only thing. Mother nature controls that.”

While the weather probably should not be a surprise to anybody, really what surprised me was the amount of rain that we got at the beginning of the growing season and the amount of rain that we did not get during the crucial part of the growing season, the summer, and then the rain we got again at the end of the growing season really delaying us getting crops out of the field. A couple of things I would probably look at doing differently, I think as we start looking at that tight window that we had to get crops in the spring, I think we are probably going to start seeing longer days in the field right away. You are probably going to see people get a little bit more antsy to get into the field.”

••• The Carroll County Farm Bureau Board has set this year’s FB Act incentive program. We are doubling the incentive! From 2016 to 2017, we went from averaging 7 contacts per action request to averaging 15 contacts per action request in 2017. Our goal is to double those contacts again.

In a typical year, there are only 6 to 8 action requests. Most action requests include a quick link to simply click on and fill in your name and address. Illinois Farm Bureau has been making it easier and easier to respond to requests, while still maintaining the effectiveness. If you attended our meeting with Adam Nielsen a few weeks ago, Adam brought up how one of the action requests was timed right before he headed out to D.C. to meet with legislators. When he got there, they already knew our position and what we wanted in regard to specific legislation. Voicing our stance does help.

••• I have been preaching about scholarships lately. First off, I want students today to know that going into ag doesn’t mean you are going to be a farmer. For some, this is their passion and what they are wanting to do, but for some that opportunity isn’t there. There are more than 250 careers related to agriculture with so many different opportunities out there. For some of our students, they may not be able to nor want to go off to a 4-year school.

I, for one, did not have that opportunity. I started my post high school schooling at Sauk Valley Community College, as that was my district. I then ended up at Highland Community College when I moved to Lanark. I graduated with an associate degree in business. Ag, while it

• • • This past week, there were a number of ag leaders in Carroll County involved in a discussion about Highland Community College and what it has to offer. Here locally, we have great options for students to get a head start on that 4-year degree or to get a certificate or associate degree. Highland has been steadily working to grow its ag program. It wants to meet the needs of the ag businesses in the counties in its district, and knows that is our number one industry.

Highland is making the experience

hands-on, and it is going behind the classroom with programs like Collegiate Farm Bureau. It is preparing students for entry into the workforce, or on to that next level of schooling.

So, while ag business was not my accounting degree, not a day goes by that I regret where I am. I was also very fortunate to get here with only that 2-year degree. As I tell students when I go speak with them, ag is an exciting career field.

It is an industry with family values, with opportunities and growth, and it can take you as far as you want to go!

Newman 70, Polo 47: The second meeting between the Comets and Marcos went almost like the first – a blowout win by the Comets in the championship game of the 1A Polo Regional.

With four different players scoring to start the game, Newman took a 16-4 lead and used that versatility to stem the tide any time Polo would try to make a run the rest of the evening.

Senior floor leader Cade Gorzny nailed his first three 3s, leading the Comets to a 27-14 advantage. Then it was fellow guard Gehrig Koerner taking over. With the open looks Polo was giving him, Koerner made them pay with four of the next five baskets by Newman, all 3-pointers.

Reid Taylor’s 10 first-half points pulled the Marcos within 27-24 midway through the second quarter. That came shortly after Newman missed six shots on one possession, but snared an offensive rebound each time.

Bureau Valley 67, Fulton 63: If the Steamers were going to win a regional title for the first time in 18 years, they were going to need some pop.

Unfortunately for the Steamers, Nate Paup provided that pop for Bureau Valley in a 1A regional title game at Stan Borgman Court, keeping Fulton’s drought intact.

Paup scored seven of the Storm’s first 14 points, and helped light up an 8-0 run with a 3 for a 14-7 lead with 3:40 left in the first quarter. Tyler Gustafson followed that with a 3 of his own for a 17-7 lead.

Entering the second half with a 38-25 lead, Paup gave the Storm their biggest lead of the game at 15 after a driving shot. The Steamers wouldn’t let the lead extend any more than that as they fought the entire second half playing for their playoff lives.

Keegan Kloepping brought the Storm’s lead down to 10 at 43-33 with 5:40 in the third with a 3 from the right wing. Tyler Bruggenwirth added a pair of putbacks and Cody Sanderson made a successful three-point play to narrow the Storm lead down to 45-41 with 3:43 left in the third.

Fulton entered the final quarter down 53-50.

With 4:18 to play, Kloepping hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 57.

Endress came up with a steal with 3:39 to play and was fouled on the drive by Jamison Osborne on the shot; Endress made both free throws for a 59-57 lead.

That two-point lead remained at 61-59, but the Steamers, with a chance to score and inbounding under the Storm basket, committed a turnover on the inbounds play to give the Storm the ball back.

Paup made the Steamers pay for that turnover as he got fouled on the next possession and sank two free throws for a 63-59 lead.

Fulton never got a lead, or tied, after that. The Steamers came close at 65-63 after Osborn made a bucket off of a steal with 11.4 seconds to play, but more Storm free throws iced the game.

Sanderson ended with 20 points, and broke the Steamers’ single-season record in that category to finish with 190 for the year. Bruggenwirth finished with a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Sterling 78, Rochelle 56: The Golden Warriors closed out the regular season by setting a season-high in points in a Senior Night win over the Hubs at Musgrove Fieldhouse.

The victory also clinched back-to-back 20-win seasons for the Golden Warriors for the first time since 1989-90.

Rochelle climbed out of an early first-quarter deficit to trail by just five at halftime, but Sterling started the second half on a 10-0 run. Sean Gingrich knocked down a 3, Micah Kendrick hit a free throw and a layup, and Tyler Willman notched a pair of putbacks.

Just when the Hubs were poised to cut the Warriors’ lead back down to single digits, Aidan Shore picked up a steal and passed ahead to Kendrick, who found Marquez Williams for a layup to put Sterling up 57-40 midway through the third.

The final Rochelle back-breaker was a Kendrick bucket through contact, followed by a pair of Willman free throws after the senior forward snagged an offensive rebound off of the senior guard’s miss at the foul line. Sterling led 65-49 after three, and never looked back in the fourth.

Sterling shot 40 percent (30-for75) from the floor, and outrebounded Rochelle 50-24. Kendrick continued his hot play of late with 19 points, five rebounds, two assists and five steals, and Gingrich finished with 15 points, four boards and a pair of assists and steals.

Shore dominated the interior with 11 points, 17 rebounds and two steals, while Willman notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.

River Ridge 58, Lena-Winslow 45: The Panthers fell to their NUIC West rivals in the championship game of the Dakota Regional.

Cade Benson led Lena-Winslow with 20 points. Trey Thomas scored 22 points to lead River Ridge.

East Dubuque 52, Pearl City 37: The Wolves exited the regular season as NUIC West champions, but couldn’t make it past a divisional rival in the East Dubuque Regional championship game.

WEDNESDAY Milledgeville 74, AFC 55: The Missiles set a new school record for most wins in a season with 23, after beating the Raiders in a 1A Amboy Regional semifinal.

With the teams tied at 9 in the first quarter, Carson Boyer came away with a steal in the left wing and dished to a breaking Cade Schave with 4:09 left.

Schave hit a 3 for a 12-9 Missiles lead, and Boyer followed 30 seconds later

with a 3 of his own for a six-point lead.

Less than 24 hours removed from scoring a season-high 93 points against Paw Paw, the Raiders (12-19) saw much of the same in this game. Paw Paw hit 11 3s on Tuesday, and the Missiles hit nine more.

That burst was enough to lift the Missiles to a 19-9 lead after one quarter, and it was the start of a 21-3 run which lasted into the second quarter. Nearly half of Milledgeville’s points at halftime – a 43-28 Missiles lead – were scored from behind the arc. Nate Rahn hit a pair of 3s, and Ottens, Jack Munz and Blayne Kappes each made one 3 – Kappes’ came just before the halftime buzzer.

One day removed from scoring a careerhigh 36 points against Paw Paw, AFC senior Adam Hart was held to two field goals and seven points. This time, it was Schave scoring a career-high 36 Wednesday, two more than his previous best.

Only three other times had the Missiles won at least 22 games in the regular season – each coming after the annexation of the Chadwick school district in 1989.

Newman 67, Eastland 57 (OT): Of the Comets’ nine possessions in the extra session, the only one that saw the Comets come away with no points was the last one, as Cade Gorzny tucked the ball under his arm to run out the clock in a 1A Polo Regional semifinal win over Eastland.

With the game tied 50-50 at the end of regulation, Devon House won the opening tip of overtime and Gorzny quickly drove to the rim to put the Comets ahead. House added a few baskets in the paint, Gorzny hit from the free-throw line, and Brycen Bartel added a layup.

Eastland kept pace at first, getting baskets in the paint from Travis Spong and Ethan Christians, but a pair or turnovers and three misses from the field led to Newman pushing its lead into double digits.

While Newman shot 5-for-5 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in overtime, the Comets struggled to shoot in the fourth quarter, hitting just one basket from the field, a Travis Williams layup.

With Newman’s offense struggling, Eastland rallied. Newman led 47-40 heading into the fourth quarter, but Christians hit a basket in the paint and Spong added a steal and a basket to cut the lead to 47-44. After Bartel and Reid Janssen traded free throws, Kaden Henze hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 48-48 with 3:27 left in the quarter.

As if the offensive outburst wasn’t enough, the senior guard grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for the Missiles, who won their first postseason tournament championship since winning a district tournament in 1931 – 87 years ago.

Ottens’ big game came 2 days after teammate Cade Schave scored a careerhigh 36 in a semifinal win against Ashton-Franklin Center.

“I said, ‘Hey, you’ve got to take over because I don’t think these guys can guard you,’” Missiles coach Brad Grenoble said. “He had kind of an average game against AFC because they kind of knew him. He said he was ready, and he took over, man. He took over. Cade took over AFC, Kyle took over here. That’s why you have two all-state players.”

Schave finished with 14 points for the Missiles as the two combined for most of the offense. But it was Carson Boyer who hit one of the biggest shots in the fourth, giving Milledgeville its first lead of the game, 59-56 with 3:28 left. The Timberwolves led by as many as 10 points early in the third quarter.

Boyer finished with five points, and Blayne Kappes scored three to account for all the Milledgeville scoring.

Indian Creek retook the led at 60-59 with 2:16 left, but a 3-pointer by Ottens with 1:45 to go put the Missiles ahead for good. Less than 20 seconds later Boyer had a steal and a layup to push the lead to four.

Just like at the start of the game, it was scores by four different players stretching Newman’s halftime lead from 33-26 to 43-29.

That balance of Devon House (17 points), Travis Williams (16), Gorzny (13) and Koerner (12) led the Comets.

Erie endured a tough shooting night, finishing at just 34 percent (11-for-32) for the game. The Cardinals hung in to trail just 30-25 at halftime, but couldn’t contain the Cougars in the second half.

Eastland boosted its lead to 36-25 just 2 minutes into the third quarter after Brett Swalve found Janssen for a layup.

After a 3 and pair of free throws by Erie’s Brady Anderson cut the Cardinals’ deficit to 40-30, the Cougars closed the third on a 9-3 run to gain separation.

Eastland outrebounded Erie 31-16 in the contest, and shot an efficient 46 percent (24-for-52) from the floor.

Fulton 64, Morrison 30: Tyler Bruggenwirth had never thrown down two dunks in a game before.

In a 2A Fulton Regional quarterfinal at Stan Borgman Court, Bruggenwirth tried to provide an early pop in the first quarter with a two-handed jam after a steal, but Morrison senior guard Britt Ottens countered with a 3 on the next possession.

The next time Bruggenwirth got a chance to slam the ball down, it was the momentum the Steamers need to sail away with a win.

Bruggenwirth’s second two-handed jam came after Austin Schroeder came up with a steal at halfcourt with 7:20 left in the second quarter. Schroeder dished to Bruggenwirth, who cleared incoming traffic with a dunk from the right side for a 20-8 lead.

While Bruggenwirth, who finished with 11 points (nine by halftime), sent aggression at the rim, the Mustangs tried to use their physicality to frustrate the Steamers, but it backfired.

By the end of the first quarter, the Mustangs had put Fulton in the bonus, and the Steamers capitalized by making 12 of 16 free throws in the half.

Football: Thunder LB Murray commits to Central West Carroll senior linebacker Devon Murray announced Thursday on his Twitter account that he will continue his football career at Central College.

Murray led the Thunder in tackles last season on a defense that gave up 11.9 points per game, which included four shutouts. He was an Illinois High School Football Coaches Association 2A AllState selection and a unanimous pick to the NUIC Northwest first team.

The Thunder tied a school record for wins this past season with a 7-4 record, and won its second playoff game in history with a 2A opening-round win over Fieldcrest.

Murray, whose father played football at Augustana College after graduating from Mount Carroll High School in 2000, is the third Thunder player this season with college football plans. West Carroll seniors Kaleb and Kody Plattenberger will attend Monmouth College and play baseball and football.

Central, located in Pella, Iowa, competes at the Division III level in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
