New clerk , financial reports highlight meeting

Lanark aldermen voted 5-0 to hire Donna Burgh as the clerk at the Nov. 21 City Council meeting.

Ward 3 Alderman Jay Van Matre was ill and unable to attend the meeting.

Burgh was hired Oct. 3 as a temporary administrative assistant, but

at the time had recently moved back to Lanark from Mount Carroll and did not meet residency requirements. Once Nov. 15 passed, Burgh could be hired.

City Attorney Ed Mitchell swore Burgh into office. She will fill the remainder of former city Clerk Sabrina Yoeckel’s term until the April 2021 election.

Yoeckel, 20, was elected in April, but resigned Aug. 29 from her dual role

as city clerk and utility clerk, amid veiled threats of “legal proceedings” and allegations of fraud following public discussion of her not depositing checks to the bank.

Shannon village Clerk Denise Bormann is serving as utility clerk, and gave the council a report on progress with water billing and collections.

The city has been dealing with about $84,000 in unpaid bills found in late April in a drawer at City Hall.

“Collections have been up. In one day, I took in $15,000,” Bormann said.

OBITUARIES LOIS L. DAEHLER CHADWICK – Lois Luella Daehler, 89, of Chadwick, and long-time resident of Stephenson County Nursing Center in Freeport, passed away Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017, at the nursing center.

Lois was born Oct. 17, 1928, in Sterling, the daughter of Earl and Luella (Humprey) McDearmon. She was a 1949 graduate of Morrison High School. On Sept.

1, 1949, Lois married James Vandermyde in Malvern.

They celebrated 36 years of marriage until James’ passing in 1985. Lois later married Ellwood Daehler on May 4, 1990. They celebrated 9 years of marriage until Ellwood’s passing in 2000.

Lois was a homemaker, and helped farm with her first husband, James. At that time, she also worked for General Electric Co. and National Tea Grocery Store in Morrison. After James’ passing, Lois received her CNA degree and worked at the Villas of Shannon Nursing Home for several years.

She later worked at Good Samaritan Society – Mount Carroll and Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna.

She was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison. Lois enjoyed baking pies. She liked farming and listening to WGN farm reports. She also liked traveling with family and enjoying long Sunday drives in the countryside.

Lois will be dearly missed by her two sons, Keith Vandermyde of Lanark and Neal Vandermyde of Chadwick;

Lois also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Warren and Larry McDearmon; and two sisters, Olivia Duuck and Marion Deets.

A graveside funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Chadwick Cemetery.

A celebration of life service will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Shannon Baptist Church, with Pastor Tim Lehman officiating. A luncheon will follow.

BRUCE DUNSHEE GROHARING THOMSON – Bruce Dunshee Groharing, 104, of Thomson, passed away peacefully Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

Bruce was born Oct. 5, 1913, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Robert and Adeline L. (Dunshee) Groharing. He attended York Community High School in Thomson and graduated with the Class of 1931. He also attended one year at Morgan Park Military Academy in Chicago. In his youth, he worked with various area farmers. He worked in Thomson, supplying blocks of ice to the community before electric refrigeration was available. At age 19, he began working in

Morrison at Midwest Stamping & Enameling, an ice box manufacturing company. He transferred with the company to Galesburg. He met the love of his life, Alice Marie Mayhall, in Galesburg; they were married June 2, 1938.

In 1939 ,they moved to Thomson in 1939, following the death of his father. Bruce managed the three family farms until he retired in 1990. He drove the Thomson school bus for 25 years, and made many lifelong friends. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his children and grandchildren. Over his long life, Bruce enjoyed many activities and organizations.

They were Masonic Lodge (66 years); Eastern Star (65 years); Carroll County Farm Bureau; Carroll County Pomona Grange; and Village of Thomson Board. Activities included were:Thomson Fire Department volunteer (50 years), Melon Days Committee for numerous years; and participating in many Thomson community plays in the 1950s at York Community High School.

Bruce loved sports. As a young man, he played on the Thomson Melon Tossers baseball team. He enjoyed attending his children’s sporting events. Bruce bowled for more than 40 years in various leagues in the area. Both he and Alice played golf for many years. By the time he retired from playing golf at age

95, he had achieved three holes-in-one. He enjoyed being the official basketball scorekeeper for many years, and singing in mixed, and men’s quartet at a number of events. His favorite sports teams were the Green Bay Packers, New York Yankees, and the Clinton Lumber Kings.

Bruce enjoyed going to Dusty’s Restaurant in Thomson where he received 5-star treatment. He was known as the town historian.

Bruce is survived by his five children, Bernard (Nadine) Groharing of O’Fallon, Missouri, Richard (Samantha) Groharing of Thomson, Bruce “Donald” (JaneAnn) Groharing of Thomson, Lee (Sue) Groharing of New Lennox, and Jeanne (Jerry) Moshure of Fulton; 32 grandchildren; 79 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice; sister, Prudence Brookstra; his two half sisters, Bess Carpenter and Pherna Dresbach; and two grandsons, Jon Bernard and Christopher Lee. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, with Masonic rites accorded at 3 p.m. Wednesday, at Thomson United Methodist Church. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be at Dunshee (Lower York) Cemetery

BETTY GUENZLER MOUNT CARROLL – Betty Guenzler, 83, of Mount Carroll, passed away Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society – Mount Carroll.

Betty was born June 15, 1934, in Crystal, Michigan, the daughter of Mark and Marie (Bogart) Ruedger.

She graduated from Lansing Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan, and received religious training at Huntington College.

Betty worked as a missionary in Sierra Leone, Africa for 9 years. After her missionary calling, she worked as a nurse at St. John Hospital.

Betty’s future husband, Charles Guenzler, was caring for his first wife, Juanita, at their home. A group of missionary nurses, of which Betty was one, came to Mt. Carroll to help Charles care for Juanita. After Juanita’s death, Charles stayed in contact with Betty, and eventually they were married on June 8, 1985. They celebrated 32 years together, and remained devoted to each other for the rest of their lives. Charles passed away 22 days before Betty on Oct. 28, 2017. Betty farmed with her husband, Charles, for many years. She was a member of Pleasant Valley Church of God in rural Mount Carroll.

Betty is survived by three sisters, Shirley Ruedger of Greenville, Michigan, Frances Proctor of Hubbardston, Michigan, and Nancy (Calvin) Hansen of Sheridan, Michigan; one brother, Don (Diane) Ruedger of Middleton, Michigan; her sister-in-law, Marjorie Mummert of rural Lanark;

and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by both parents; her husband, Charles; two sisters, Edith and Donna; a brother-in-law, Lawrence Mummert in 2005; and his nephew, Allen Mummert, in 1964, who was Carroll County’s first soldier killed during service in Vietnam.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, and the funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Carroll Church of God. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Valley Church of God and the Carroll County 4-H Club.

TAMMARRA C. HINRICHS MORRISON – Tammarra Colleen Hinrichs, 58, of rural Sterling, passed away Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017, peacefully, at her home, with her family by her side, after a 3-year courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Tam was born Oct. 6, 1959, to George William “Bill” and Carol Jo (Tenboer) Fisk of Prophetstown.

She grew up in rural Prophetstown and graduated from Prophetstown High School in 1977, and then attended Sterling Cosmetology School and received her cosmetology license.

She married Daniel Neil Hinrichs on July 26, 1980, at Prophetstown United Methodist Church. She

worked at Clip and Curl in Sterling for several years before staying home to raise her family and farm beside her husband for 20-plus years. She did hair at home before returning to work after her children were older. Tam worked at Casey’s in Milledgeville for a few years, before becoming a pharmacy technician at CVS in Sterling for the last 16 years. She really enjoyed working with the customers, her coworkers, and her regular hair ladies.

She loved doing hair and talking with her clients.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Jordan on Route 40, and enjoyed playing bells a few years with Coleta Methodist Church. She was an amazing cook and baker, always bringing treats and desserts to work or events. She loved crocheting and recently watching the Hallmark channel. She loved going to farm shows with Dan, children, and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Dan of 37 years; her two children, Abbie (Shawn) Heid of Pearl City and Josh Hinrichs of Sterling; her two grandchildren, Elmer Joseph Heid and Nora Mae Heid; two brothers, Tim R. Fisk of Prophetstown and Tom B. Fisk of Rockford; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents, an aunt, two uncles, a cousin, a brother-in-law, and a sister-in-law.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at BosmaRenkes Funeral Home in Dixon. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church of Jordan in Sterling, with Pastor Jamie Gallagher officiating. Interment will be at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Sterling.

LLOYD K. MILLER POLO – Lloyd K. Miller, 79, of Polo, formerly of Lanark, passed away Friday, Nov. 24, 2017, at Polo Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

Lloyd was born May 17, 1938, to Theodore and Oma (Hawbecker) Miller, and he graduated in 1956 from Lanark High School. Lloyd married Carolyn Erbsen on May 5, 1957.

She passed away on May 30, 2000. On Dec. 1, 2001, he married Dianne Stern of Polo.

He farmed near Lanark for many years, and then later worked for WW Builders.

He was a member of Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren, and attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sterling.

He enjoyed woodworking, spending time with his fam-

ily, and attending his grandchildren’s special events.

Survivors include his wife Dianne of Polo, and brother Ivon Miller of Chadwick.

Children are Lynn (Kris) Miller of Prophetstown, Sharon (Brian) Witt, Karen (Justin Merchant) Miller, and Lyle (Codee) Miller, all of Lanark, Carolyn Ohlsen of Rock Island, Dawn (Jeff) Waite of Sterling, and Gene (Kristen) Stern of Elburn.

Grandchildren are Kim (Josh) Bird, Kari (Reid) Spivey, Karl Miller, Stephanie (Brenden) Schultz, Justin (Augusta) Witt, Austin and Alyssa Miller, Hannah Ohlsen, Jonathon, Joshua, and Rebecca Waite, Parker and Drew Malone,and Liam Stern.

Savanna to pursue more user friendly, visible Great River Bike Trail

BY MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – Savanna’s leaders want the Great River Bike Trail to be more clearly marked and be a better experiene for users.

The City Council on Nov. 14 voted to seek a grant that would include funding for a Trail Head Development Project thta would improve the area around the fire station which leads to the trail. Savanna Mayor Chris Lain described the changes as being “more clear parking, green space, trees, new lighting, decorative sidewalks and patio, benches, … Just making it a lot more welcoming area.”

Lain has met with IDOT about the feasibility of the city getting a grant, and the issue of the railroad track in the middle of the project.

He said it seemed in their discussions that the city would be able to just mark the bike links.

Lee said the grant is an 80/20 grant, with costs of $5,800 for project engineering and $4,800 for grant administration.

Alderman Jeff Griswold asked if there might be an advantage to do the trail head more on the river side versus the street side. Lain said he felt it would have more visibility doing it on the street side, and that he’d like to see more development in the area vacated by the old sewer plant.

Alderman Roger Husband agreed.

“I think that that old sewer plant

property is much more valuable to the city than a parking lot or a flagpole,” he said. “...If you put it across the track, it’s kind of hidden.”

Griswold said he thought plans were to develop the old sewer plant area as a green space.

“I don’t think we need another green space,” Alderman Jim Friedenbach said.

“I envision it as some kind of commercial venture that returns some tax dollars to the city,” Husband said.

The council voted to move ahead with the grant application, using money from the city’s TIF fund.

City gets $1,000 to replant trees The city was notified it will receive $1,000 from Trees Forever Illinois’ Recover, Replant & Restore program to replace the trees that were removed due to age and general condition this past year. Superintendent of Public Works John Lindeman said the money could fund five new trees, more than likely honey locust or possibly gingko trees.

City employee honored Tim Schoenig of the Public Works Department received recognitionf rom the Illinois Rural Water Association as one of the finalists for Waste Water Operations Specialist of the Year.

“Tim’s definitely very worthy of the award,” Lindeman said.

armers wanting to apply dicamba next year will need to attend a training session this winter. Visit the Illinois Dicamba Training Website at https:// ifca.com/IllinoisDicambaTraining.

Dicamba has been a prime discussion topic.

Illinois had the third highest number of complaints in the U.S. There is a new label for the three pesticides labeled for application on dicamba tolerant soybeans.

They are now considered Restricted Use Pesticides and require specific training to apply beyond the private or commercial applicators license.

In a news release, Extension equine specialist Debra Hagstrom wrote that team members included Kiersten Pratt from Bureau

County, and Brenna Berns, Megan Poole, Kaiti Collins, and Natalie Shaw, all from Carroll County. Bryan Hollewell of Milledgeville coached the team.

Berns placed fifth individually, and Pratt finished 10th. The team also earned first in October at the All American Quarter Horse Congress Horse Bowl.

Christmas walk returns Friday in Fulton

PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF FULTON – Music, a run, walk, and much more will take place Friday during Fulton’s annual Christmas Walk in the downtown.

Activities begin at 4:30 p.m., with the Boy Scouts presenting a soup supper until 6:30 p.m. at Robert Fulton Community Center, 912 Fourth St. Sameday registration for the

13th annual Illuminated Run, Walk will be at 5:30 p.m. at Manny’s Pizza, 305 11th Ave., with the race starting at 6:30 p.m. at the restaurant.

Vocalist Mark Kapasinski will sing at 5:45 p.m. at the live nativity near de Immigrant Windmill, 415 10th Ave. The walk officially runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with Santa and Mrs. Claus greeting visitors at the windmill.

Tips to simplify holiday hosting

H

osting family and friends for the holidays is a tall task. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, during the Christmas/ New Year holiday period, the number of longdistance trips (to and from a destination 50 miles or more away) increases by 23 percent compared to the rest of the year. While many of those traveling will stay in hotels, many more will enjoy the hospitality of loved ones.

Holiday hosting can make an already hectic time of year that much busier, as hosts must prepare their homes for guests in the midst of holiday shopping excursions, office Christmas parties and social engagements around the neighborhood and at kids’ schools.

Holiday hosting does not have to run hosts ragged in the days leading up to guests’ arrival.

The following are a handful of ways to simplify holiday hosting.

Plan menus well in advance of guests’ arrival. One of the more time-consuming tasks associated with holiday hosting is cooking.

Hosts who plan their holiday menus in advance

can get started on prep work several weeks before guests arrive. Choose dishes that can be prepared in advance and then frozen, so dishes need only be defrosted and cooked once guests arrive.

Let guests pitch in. Some hosts may feel obligated to cater to all of their guests’ needs during the holiday season. But many guests want to pitch in any way they can. If guests offer to do some holiday baking or take the family out for dinner during their visits, allow them to do so. This takes a little responsibility away from hosts while also allowing guests to show how much they appreciate the hospitality of their hosts.

Plan a night out. Another way to make hosting friends and family for the holidays less taxing is to plan a night out for everyone.

In lieu of cooking at home, dine out at an affordable, family-friendly restaurant before taking everyone to a local holiday light display or bazaar. This gets everyone out of the house and allows hosts to showcase their hometown pride.

Rotate hosting duties. The holiday season is full of tradition, and some hosts may feel beholden to tradition and offer to host each year. But family traditions are about getting together, not about getting together in a particular place each year.

Christmas cookies made simple

B

aking cookies is a holiday tradition for many families. Some the holiday season, many homes are bathed in the inviting scents of vanilla, cinnamon and melting chocolate.

Baking cookies can be a social occasion in which family members and friends gather to create recipes passed down through generations. Or baking can be a solitary venture in which cookies are prepared and packaged as holiday gifts. Either way, people who bake during the holiday season understand that making Christmas cookies can be a time-consuming, yet rewarding process.

This year, holiday bakers can embrace a number of time-saving tips and tricks to reduce the amount of time they spend in the kitchen and possibly even improve upon existing recipes.

Use a cookie mix. Who says you have to toil and make cookies from scratch? It’s the thought that counts, and any number of creative recipes can begin by utilizing a pre-made baking mix.

These mixes already have most of the dry cookie ingredients sifted together, including flour, baking

Be prepared for unexpected company T

he latter part of the year is full of social engagements with family and friends.

Pew Research Center says 92 percent of all Americans plan to celebrate Christmas as a holiday, with 69 percent using it as an opportunity to spend time with family and friends.

While many social occasions surrounding Christmas are anticipated for months in advance, unexpected pop-ins are also the norm this time of year. Rather than being caught off guard, individuals can take steps to prepare for unexpected guests.

Have food available. Even if guests pop in for a little while, it’s nice to be able to offer them something to eat. Keep cheese and crackers, fresh fruit, pretzels, and other snacks on hand.

Make-ahead, crowd-friendly foods can be prepared and frozen. Casseroles, pasta dishes and stews are hearty and can serve in a pinch when unexpected visitors arrive. Simply take out to defrost and heat up. Keep cookies in air-tight tins and purchase a premade frozen pie to serve, if necessary. In a pinch,

you can always order out, but over time the cost of having food delivered can add up.

Keep the bar stocked. Toasting to a happy holiday season is the norm during this time of year. Toasting requires hosts have some spirits on hand. Stock the bar with a few staples, such as red and white wine, vodka, rum, whiskey, and mixers. Also, you may just want to create a signature or seasonal cocktail that can be served when guests arrive, such as a spiced punch or a holiday eggnog.

Cue the musical playlist. Put together a playlist of favorite holiday music that will provide the ideal ambiance should guests ring your doorbell. Thanks to services like Spotify, Amazon Music and Pandora, holiday music that fills a home with the sweet sounds of the season is now always accessible.

Keep things neat. Set aside a closet or space that can serve as a catch-all where errant items can quickly be stored should guests arrive. Gather loose toys, books or stray

papers in a basket and then stash the basket in the closet until guests depart. Routinely empty the dishwasher so dirty dishes left in the sink can be quickly loaded before guests arrive.

Christmas tree safety tips

hristmas trees are staples of the holiday season that can be found in millions of households across the globe. But Christmas trees can be as dangerous as they are heartwarming. According to the American Christmas Tree Association, Christmas tree fires contribute to $13 million in property damage annually. Many Christmas tree fires involve live Christmas trees that, while beautiful, pose a greater fire threat than artificial trees because they can dry out, making them vulnerable to electric lights and nearby heating sources. Homeowners can take the following steps, courtesy of the ACTA, to prevent Christmas tree fires.

Purchase a fresh tree. The ACTA notes that fresh trees are less likely to catch fire than trees that were cut weeks before being purchased. Avoid trees that are shedding their needles. Try to purchase trees with vibrant green needles that are hard to pluck.

Purchasing freshly cut trees from tree farms instead of grocery store parking lot vendors, whose trees might have been cut weeks earlier, can ensure trees are fresh.

Discard damaged lights. Damaged lights are not just an eyesore but a significant safety threat. Electrical malfunctions in lights can contribute to tree fires, so discard any damaged lights. Before placing lights on the tree, stretch each strand out on the floor and plug them in to see if any lights are damaged or burned out, replacing those that don’t pass inspection.

Place the tree away from heat sources.

Christmas trees are the centerpieces of holiday decorations. But trees should never be placed near heat sources, no matter how aesthetically appealing certain spots may seem. Keep trees away from fireplaces, radiators, candles, heating vents, and lights.

Keep the tree watered. A tree that gets ample water is less likely to dry out, and dried out trees pose a significant fire risk. Check water levels and water trees in the morning and night as needed, and even more frequently if necessary.

Turn lights off at night. Christmas tree lights should always be turned off at night when residents are going to bed. In addition, lights should never be on when no one is home.

ounting down to Christmas Day means many different things to people across the globe. Although people likely have several different traditions they anticipate each year, it can be fun to incorporate some new merrymakers into the festivities. Here are some festive ideas to include in the days up until Christmas — a special family calendar of fun finds.

1. Annual memento: Have the kids or adults make one new handmade ornament each year. This way the tree is always evolving and everyone can track milestones.

2. Cookie day: Devote one day to making Christmas cookies. Invite friends or family members over. Distribute some cookies to elderly neighbors.

3. Holiday classic: Spend a night in and watch a classic Christmas flick you’ve never seen before. Streaming movie services often put classics and obscure titles into rotation during the holiday season.

4. Christmas concert: Host a gathering of children where they can sing or perform their favorite tunes for an audience. Take it on the road to a nearby nursing home.

5. Dine out: Take a break from cooking, shopping and hosting and stop into a restaurant you’ve been meaning to try. Keep it local to support nearby businesses.

6. Adopt a child/family: Volunteer with a charitable organization that provides for less fortunate families. Answer the Christmas desires of a needy child or family by purchasing an item on their wish lists.

7. See the sights: Pack the children into the family car to tour nearby areas and look at Christmas lights displays. Bring along cookies and hot chocolate.

8. Trim a tree: Get together with adult friends at a tree-trimming party. Rotate the hosting house each year.

There will be no gender and no signature line on new cards, and the cards will arrive in an HHS envelope.

Please be aware: No one will call you for your information.

If you receive a call about your new Medicare card, IT IS A SCAM! New cards will start being mailed in April 2018 and all will be replaced by April 2019. So watch your mail, and shred your old Medicare card as soon as you get your new one. If you do not have access to a shredder, bring your old card to the Carroll County Senior Center and we will shred them for you.

NICAA Golden Meals program has expanded its services to include more home delivery routes in the Shannon area, for the town of Shannon and the rural areas surrounding it. NEWS OF NOTE Coffee for Veterans scheduled Dec. 1 Veterans Coffee will meet at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at the Senior Center. This will be a time of sharing memories and experiences over coffee and treats. We invite all veterans from any branch and from all times of service from WWII to the present.

Exercise equipment at Senior Center The Carroll County Senior Center now has six pieces of professional-grade equipment available: Treadmill, rowing machine, stair stepper, E-Force cross trainer, and recumbent bicycle. You are welcome to use any of these anytime the Senior Center is open, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

These fine pieces of exercise equipment have been donated to help seniors get some needed movement and cardio work that can improve both their physical and mental states. As anyone can tell you, a few minutes walking or riding a bike can go a long way.

We have moved the exercise equipment to the downstairs area for more privacy for those who wish to use it.

So bring a few friends and all of you can work out together, and the best part—it’s free!

Senior Services Would you like to get a discount on your license plates?

If you qualify, you can apply for the Benefits Access Program, formerly Circuit Breaker, and receive a discount on your license plate sticker. Income guidelines per year are: for one – $27,610; and for two – $36,635. The age requirement is 65 or disabled.

Also if you have applied before please check with us to see if it is that time of the year to reapply for your license plate discount.

Call us at 815-244-1800 to make an appointment for help with your application. If you applied in 2014, you will need to apply again this year. Remember to bring proof of all income for 2015 (i.e. 1099 from Social Security, or your 1040 or 1040A income tax form, etc.) to complete your license plate discount application.

The Department on Aging has notified us that starting Jan. 1, 2017, you will need to bring proof of income for 2015 and 2016 in order to qualify for the license plate discount.

Transportation

Carroll County Transportation now has three buses and six vans, all wheelchair accessible.

CCT provides transportation for citizens of Carroll County, for meals, medical appointments, shopping, and errands throughout Carroll County, and will make trips to Freeport, Sterling, and Clinton, Iowa.

If you need a ride, call 815-2440011 at least a couple of days in advance to schedule your trip. The service is supported by your donations to help offset the unfunded expenses, which continue to increase daily We provide this service to assist those who no longer drive or would rather have someone else do the driving. Activities at the Senior Center Recycling

Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering� people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers� work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers� help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center.

The Great River Outreach Table is part of the Great River Outreach Center in Savanna and offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the former Chestnut Park School, 926 Viaduct Road, south of town on state Route 84. Â In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church, 216 S. Main St. Any age is welcome. Donations are accepted but not required. The food is brought to Mount Carroll on Wednesday. Volunteers are involved in this endeavor.

Lanark UMC has launched a new group within the Lanark community.This will be called “Vintage 405� and will reach out to those in our community who are lonely and need social interaction.

Turning 65 can be very confusing with all the information you receive in the mail about which Medicare D Plan to take or which supplemental to get. If you have questions, stop by and see our SHIP Counselors, Deb Connor and Karen Holm, and we can help you sort through the confusion. time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period. Your IEP includes the three months before, the month of, and the three months following your 65th birthday. Your IEP will span from September 2016 to March 2017. If you enroll in Medicare during this time, you will avoid late enrollment penalties.

The date when your Medicare coverage begins depends on when you enroll during your IEP. For your coverage to begin as soon as possible, it is best to enroll in the first three months of your IEP. Your Medicare coverage will then go into effect starting the month you turn 65.

To enroll in Medicare, please stop by the Senior Center and we can do this for you. It is important to be proactive and take the steps to enroll during your IEP. If you miss your IEP, you may be limited to specific times when you can enroll in Medicare in the future, and you may face a penalty for late enrollment, resulting in higher premiums.

Grandpa spots scammers This is a true story of how scammers try to get your money. So please beware.

A recent story involves Lou, who picked up the phone and spotted the scam almost as soon as he heard the young man call him “Grandpa.” The caller said he’d been arrested for drunk driving, needed money for bail, and wanted Lou to call a “lawyer” who would explain everything. (All while not telling “Mom.”) “I played along with it,” said Lou, 87, who was curious to hear the scammer’s pitch. But Lou also called his daughter, a consumer lawyer. She knew this scam — someone pretends to be a friend or family member in need of money for bail, a medical emergency, or other trouble. His grandson was fine.

The scammers used common tricks.

They tested Lou to see how much money they could get. They first claimed bail was $7,000, but when Lou said he only had half that amount, the fake lawyer said he could get the bail reduced. Usually, scammers ask you to wire the money or get a prepaid

card and give them the numbers on the card. If you do, your money will be gone.

They tried to keep Lou from talking to anyone. They even told Lou he could be arrested and fined if he told anyone about their conversation. Why? Scammers don’t want you talking to anyone else. They want you to act fast, without thinking too carefully.

The scammers used information Lou gave them to make their story seem more real. For example, the fake grandson told Lou the accident occurred “in the city.” When Lou named the District of Columbia, the fake grandson said, “Yes. In D.C.” Scammers also get information from social networking sites, or by hacking a loved one’s email account.

If you get a call like this, get off the phone and check it out. Call your loved one using a phone number you know is theirs, or call another family member. Then, tell a friend your story. By talking about this scam, you can help someone else avoid it. And please, tell us too.

Educate yourself on ‘spoofing ’ Call from 877-382-4357? Hang up.

Scammers are using fake caller ID information to trick you into thinking they’re someone who can be trusted.

The practice is called caller ID spoofing, and scammers can fake anyone’s phone number.

Today, we got reports that scammers are spoofing the FTC’s Consumer Response Center’s phone number (877382-4357). But don’t let that stop you from reporting scammers – it’s still safe to call the Consumer Response Center, and it’s also safe to report scammers.

If you’ve submitted a report or request to the FTC’s Consumer Response Center, the FTC might call you for additional information. But they won’t call you from 877-382-4357.

And the FTC will never ask for money or for sensitive information such as your Social Security number, date of birth, or bank account information.

Scammers are constantly picking new phone numbers to spoof. Here are a few tips for staying ahead of scammers and their unexpected calls: • If you get a strange call from a government phone number, hang up. If you want to check it out, visit the official (.gov) website for contact information.

• Don’t give out – or confirm – your personal or financial information to someone who calls.

• Don’t wire money or send money using a reloadable card. In fact, never pay someone who calls out of the blue, even if the name or number on the caller ID looks legit.

• Feeling pressured to act immediately?

Hang up. That’s a sure sign of a scam.

If you’ve gotten a call from a scammer, with or without fake caller ID information, report it to the Carroll County Senior Center or the Sheriff’s Department.

Free help available via Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) The Illinois Department on Aging’s (IDoA) Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) is reminding seniors of the free counseling assistance available to Medicare-eligible individuals and their caregivers during Medicare Open Enrollment through Dec. 7.

With more than 300 SHIP offices across Illinois, the agency stands ready to refer clients to

We recycle them by sending them to a company that refurbishes them for emergency 911 phones in areas devastated by disasters and for sale to low income persons.

Aude’s 3-pointer at the buzzer capped off a furious comeback and lifted the Missiles to a victory against the Comets at the Oregon Thanksgiving Tournament. It was the first game-winning basket for

“I never did, and I didn’t think I ever would,” Aude said.

The game-winning play was set up when Newman’s Devon House missed the second of a 1-and-1 free-throw opportunity with 7.6 seconds on the clock. Milledgeville’s Nathan Rahn grabbed the rebound and flipped it to Kyle Ottens, who dribbled across halfcourt toward the top of the key.

With the lane clogged with Comets, Ottens delivered the ball to Aude in the left corner. He caught the ball cleanly and let it fly. The ball hit nothing but net as the buzzer sounded.

“When Brad drew it up, I knew I had that burden on my shoulder to take that shot,” Aude said. “I had to make it for the team.”

During a timeout prior to House’s trip to the line, Milledgeville coach Brad Grenoble drew up a play in which Ottens would be the key. “[Assistant] Coach [Scott] Scholl gave me a board, and I go, ‘OK, here we go,’” Grenoble said. “‘We’re going to inbound it, Ottens, you take it. Blayner [Blayne Kappes], I want you weak side.

Aude, you go strong side. Ottens, you take it all the way to the hoop to tie this game up or kick it out to Aude and see what happens.’ We got lucky. Merry Christmas early.”

The uber-athletic Ottens had success getting into the paint against the Newman defense all night and led all scorers with 21 points. On the final possession, however, that wasn’t an option.

FORRESTON TOURNAMENT Stockton 52, Eastland 48: A cold shooting spell lasted most of the night for the Eastland Cougars, and a late rally fell short in a loss to Stockton in the final game of the Forrreston Tournament.The Cougars hit 7-for-27 from the field in the first half and 3-for-16 in the third quarter before things began to turn around in the fourth.

“I think we had a lot of good looks, but we just couldn’t finish,” Eastland’s Katie Krogman said. “I think our intensity was a little bit low in the first three, maybe three and a half quarters.

We revved it up in the fourth quarter. It we hadn’t got in such a big hole, we would have come out on top.”

Stockton led by 13 heading into the final quarter, and by as many as 14 at one point before the Couars rallied. Erin Henze hit a layup and Katie Krogman followed with back-to-back baskets in the paint before Lydia Coatney got a steal and layup to cut the lead to 49-40. Henze and Coatney also hit from the free throw line, and Karlie Krogman added a basket to make it 51-46, but then shooting cooled again with Eastland missing a pair of 3-pointers.

“It comes from the defensive end,” Eastland coach Nicole Brinker said. “We were flat for three quarters, and that’s just no excuse.”

Comets place five on TRAC all-conference first team The Three Rivers released its football all-conference teams on Monday for both the Rock and Mississippi divisions.

Five players from Newman, and three each from Morrison and Fulton earned first-team honors.

Newman senior Easton Bianchi was a unanimous selection to the TRAC Rock first team as a running back and a kick/punt returner, as well as a first-team defensive back. Junior Drew Ackman was a first-team selection as a center and defensive lineman.

Guard Trevor Buser and linebacker Chase Graham were also tabbed to the first team at their respective positions for the Comets. Senior Landen Vesley was the first-team punter and second-team quarterback.

Morrison senior Aaron Deter was a unanimous first-team selection at linebacker, and a second-team running back. Other Mustangs named to the first team were defensive lineman Grant Abell and defensive back Reilly Dolan.

“Probably the variability in yields is what surprised me most. On the top end, we had some of our best yields ever on good ground that was able to hold the moisture during the dry spell in August and September. Most

of the time, it was fairly cool, so the plants weren’t stressing the good ground. Those ended up being some of the best soybeans we’ve ever harvested.

On the other side of the spectrum, on the ground that was lighter soils, it didn’t have the subsoil moisture there

for the plants and it’s been a long time since we have had yields that low on the bottom end.

Next year, we might rent more good ground, I guess.”
