The Morrison Area Development Corp. and the Children’s Art Preservation Association have been planning the Morrison Arts, Cultural and Entertainment Corridor, which the city officially supported with a resolution passed at its June 26 City Council meeting.

The first step in implementing the plan was to establish a high-end art gallery and studio in the downtown, which is the center of the corridor area.

MACD will rent space at 112 E. Main St. from new owners Josh and Kelly West. The gallery will be called Loft 112, and organizers hope to have it open before year’s end.

The gallery and art studio should be ready to open in early 2018, Ewoldsen said.

The historic brick structure was built in 1892 to be a dry goods store, and later was a

men’s clothing shop for more than a half-century. Most recently, the building was home to Gallery on Main, a gallery and antiques store.

Loft 112 and the entire arts corridor project has a broad regional scope and the steering committee is collaborating with many organizations and individuals to make it a reality.

“There are artists all

over the region, including Iowa and Wisconsin, that are excited about this project, so making this an artists’ haven could bring a lot of visitors to town,” Ewoldsen said.

Open houses will be planned for artists when the space is ready to be shown off, and a grand opening ceremony will follow.

STERLING – Prosecutors are balking at a request by the attorney for the 15-year-old Morrison teen accused of fatally shooting her mother, who is asking

the state to pay a $15,000 retainer for a psychological evaluation.

Anna Schroeder is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, concealment of homicidal death and arson in the July 6 death of her mother, Peggy S. Schroeder, 53.

Investigators say Schroeder shot her mother in the head at their home at 805 W. Park St. in Morrison, then she and a girlfriend spent a day trying to clean up before they set the house on fire July 8 to conceal the crime.

CARROLL COUNTY CRIMESTOPPERS Information on two crimes sought MOUNT CARROLL – Carroll County Crime Stoppers members are asking the public for any information on two recent crimes.

Carroll County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a large amount of garbage dumped on or around Nov. 5 on Hickory Grove Road in rural Mount Carroll. Household garbage, furniture, tires and other items were dumped. Pictures can be viewed at the Carroll Crime Stoppers Facebook page.

The other incident is a burglary which took place some time during the last two weeks of October on Messmer Road near Scenic Ridge Road, north of Savanna. Unknown persons entered a building and took a white, pink and gray 90cc Polaris all-terrain vehicle, a leaf blower, and a table saw.

• TEEN Continued from Page 3 Her attorney, Jim Mertes of Sterling, filed a motion Oct. 24 seeking to have the state pay for the services of Dr. Stevan Weine, a psychiatrist, researcher and professor with the University of Illinois Chicago School of Medicine.

Weine’s work focuses, among other things, on PTSD and trauma in refugees of armed conflict, and he also has a background in childhood trauma and its effects on adolescents.

His qualifications, education, experience and background are necessary given “the tremendous complexity and magnitude of this case” and the state’s desire to transfer it to adult court, Mertes told Judge Trish Joyce at a hearing Monday morning in Whiteside County Court.

The fee, which Mertes called “substantial, but entirely reasonable,” takes into account not only Weine’s expertise and the time it will take to interview Schroeder and others relevant, but also the time it will take to write up the report and to travel between Chicago and the Mary

Whiteside County State’s Attorney Terry Costello and Assistant State’s Attorney Carol Linkowski are not refusing to pay for an evaluation, but are saying Weine’s fee is too high, and that another equally qualified expert could be found closer to home for less money.

In fact, they found nothing in Weine’s background “that makes him uniquely qualified” to do Schroeder’s evaluation, Linkowski said.

“To argue that we can only get an expert from Chicago ... is not a reasonable use of the taxpayers’ money,” she said.

They had no suggestions for an alternative Monday, but said they will compile a list to be presented when the hearing resumes at 8:30 a.m.

ecution’s assertion that there are other equally qualified experts available in this instance “rampant conjecture,” and noted the “considerable expense” the county is saving in its prosecution of Schroeder because he was hired, and not appointed, to represent her.

Schroeder does have some money in a trust account at US Bank that can be used for medical expenses, but it is not clear if that undisclosed amount also can be used to help pay her legal fees, or if a psychological evaluation for this purpose would be considered a medical expense, Mertes said.

Otherwise, that fund is not available to her until she turns 18, and in the meantime, she is indigent, he said.

Citing the volume of evidence still being submitted, her attorney, Michael Lancaster of Sterling, recently asked the court to delay a hearing, also set for Nov. 21, to determine if Helm will be tried as an adult.

That 10:30 a.m. hearing has been changed to a pretrial conference.

If convicted of murder as a minor, Schroeder could serve until she is 21. A transfer hearing in her case has yet to be set.

One of MACD’s partners in the project is Morrison Institute of Technology. The school is building an 8,000-square-foot multipurpose Innovation Center that should be ready to open in the spring. One of its purposes is to provide space and equipment for artists to cultivate their vision.

“There will be plenty of room in the Innovation Center for artists to create, and then the work can be sold, bringing another retail element to the downtown,” Ewoldsen said.

The school and MACD has been in discussions about MIT carving out some studio space at the

gallery, possibly on the second floor.

The arts corridor would extend through much of the city east and west along U.S. Route 30, and on the south side of town along state Route 78, connecting the downtown with MIT. The infusion of the arts into the downtown comes at a time when momentum has been building in the central business district. Vacant buildings are filling up and business owners are investing in their properties.

One of the steadying influences in the downtown, Happy Joe’s, celebrated its 30th anniversary in Morrison this year, and its owners have made a huge commitment to its future there.

Kevin and Lynn Kenady, who have owned the business at 109 W. Main St. the entire time, recently finished the first phase of its ambitious expansion plans. They bought a couple of vacant buildings near the restaurant a few years ago, and the Brick Block Pub opened last month in the tastefully renovated space at 105 W. Main St. The restaurant has been remodeled and the party room has been moved downstairs for easier access. Customers have appreciated their investment and business has been brisk.

“We still have the Happy Joe’s family atmosphere, but customers will have easy access to more of a pub option,” Lynn Kenady said.

While the Happy Joe’s and Brick Block Pub project have been a big boost to the downtown, there also has been a flurry of other activity on Main Street.

Jessica Anderson, a Prophetstown High School grad, opened an insurance office in the downtown last month.

Anderson, a Farmers Insurance agent, is at 207 E. Main St., once home to a beauty salon.

A Dixon insurance agency, Trinity Financial, has set up a satellite office in Morrison.

Agent Amber Blumhoff and Angie VanderVinne, a marketing specialist, are running the business at 127 E. Main St. John and Julie Burleson opened Burleson Antiques last month at 121 E. Main St., the

site of another historic building dating back to 1900 that most recently housed an office supplies store.

Another pub in town, Fat Boys at 201 E. Main St., and Sullivan’s Foods at 300 N. Madison St., recently have undergone substantial renovations.

Reinvestment seems to be contagious, and several other businesses are making smaller upgrades.

“There have been a lot of changes and activity in the downtown just since I’ve been here,” said Chamber coordinator Meridith Layne, who started the job in March.

Morrison is a very artsoriented town, Layne said, and building on the cultural element is an exciting part of the downtown’s future.

The Children’s Art Preservation Association sponsors the city’s popular Paint the Town event, which consistently brings in about 6,000 visitors each year.

The arts corridor can help unify the efforts of the entire city to recreate a vibrant downtown, Layne said.

“Traditional downtowns everywhere have to reinvent themselves and rebrand, and Kim is good at looking outside the box. The arts corridor is strengthening partnerships here, and it can connect people from other towns and bring them here.”

Council votes to continue accountancy help

Lanark aldermen voted unanimously Nov. 7 to keep employing Erica Shaw of Savanna, the bookkeeper at the Carroll County Senior Center, as an accounting consultant. Shaw has been assisting since former treasurer Carol Kruzek was fired Oct. 12.

Mayor Ken Viglietta provided aldermen a list of 11 reasons he fired Kruzek, who was appointed in 2014. Kruzek has said the reasons are either for

duties of the utility clerk and not the treasurer, or are “malicious lies.”

A proposed ordinance

by Ward 3 Alderman Jay VanMatre, that the mayor could suspend city employees with pay until council review, will be explored by City Attorney Ed Mitchell.

Of Shaw, Viglietta said Nov. 7, “She’s got all of the daily fines stopped, payroll liabilities caught up with, and bills paid.”

At the Oct. 17 meeting, Viglietta had put forth Shaw’s name as a candidate for the treasurer’s position, but she did not meet the state’s residency requirement.

“A village can have a non-resident treasurer if it’s under 10,000 people,

but a city cannot,” Mitchell said Nov. 7.

Donna Burgh, who recently moved back to Lanark from Mount Carroll, is a temporary administrative assistant on Mondays and Tuesdays. She has been training on payroll, and continues as the assistant.

Shannon Village Clerk Denise Bormann, 55, was hired Sept. 5 as Lanark’s utility clerk, working from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays. She is splitting the city clerk duties with Viglietta,

and is earning $13,000 as Lanark’s utility clerk.

The council continues to look for treasurer candidates. VanMatre asked if the Personnel Committee could take part in the search.

“I would relish any suggestions. If you want to qualify some people, that’d be beautiful,” Viglietta said.

Ward 3 Alderman Mark Macomber said, “I think when we get to that point, we should have some roundtable meeting and get to know the candidates.”

Forreston teen dies in crash

Eastland FFA student wins at national level

STAFF REPORT news@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5501 LANARK – A Forreston teen died in a singlevehicle crash Monday morning about 4 miles north of Lanark.

Drew E. Crase, 16, was southbound on state Route 73, near the intersection of state Route 72, about 12:40 a.m. when his vehicle traveled off the east side of the road and into a ditch, striking a driveway culvert and becoming airborne, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department said today. The car came to rest upside down in a pond on the south side of the driveway.

Crase was pronounced dead at the scene by Carroll County Coroner Matt Jones.

There were no passengers in the vehicle.

No further information, including whether seat belts were worn, was available; the investigation continues.

INDIANAPOLIS – Eastland FFA member Jared Dickman of Lanark was the national winner of his supervised agricultural experience area of dairy production placement.

Dickman, the son of Tina and Connan Dickman, was one of four people chosen in August to compete for the award at the national convention, on Oct. 27 at the National FFA convention.

In a news release, Eastland FFA advisor Cindy Feltmeyer wrote that Jared milks 150 registered Holsteins and one Jersey cow twice a day for Gundy Holsteins, with his tasks including everything related to production and care of dairy animals and the quality of milk produced.

As it turned out, just fine.

The Golden Warriors got their offense in gear after halftime and rose up on defense when they needed to on their way to a 22-10 victory against Woodstock Marian on Saturday in a Class 5A quarterfinal.

Newman seizes momentum, tops Orion Comets finish strong after slow start for 40-14 win

BY TY REYNOLDS Sauk Valley Media treynolds@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5554 STERLING – The game couldn’t have started any better for the Orion Chargers. But the Newman Comets had the perfect response Saturday afternoon at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

After the Chargers scored a touchdown on the opening possession of a Class 2A quarterfinal, the Comets’ defense got the message and shut Orion down from there for a 40-14 victory.

“We took their best punch, and we just had to fight through it,” Newman senior Cade Gorzny said. “I think we just had to settle down. I think we were really riled up, so we calmed down, got to our assignments, and played Blue Machine football.”

Orion (9-3) drove 63 yards in 13 plays to start the game, taking a 7-0 lead on Sam West’s 2-yard touchdown run. The Chargers averaged nearly 5 yards per play on the drive, and ran the ball 12 straight times after an opening-play pass.

After a Newman three-andout, Orion gained two more first downs in the first five plays of its next possession to get out near midfield.

“That was the one time we kept them off-balance,” Orion coach Chip Filler said. “We were jabbing and moving, so to speak, and we went down and put it in.

“But what it was probably for them was a little bit of a wakeup call, ‘Oh boy, these guys are for real.’ Maybe we tugged on Superman’s cape, and then we got what we got.”

What the Chargers got was an angry Newman defense.

Four plays later, Gorzny scored on a 23-yard run to tie the score, and the momentum had completely shifted.

Orion went three-and-out on its next three possessions, while the Comets took the lead with a Luke Olson 6-yard TD run a minute and half into the second quarter.

“It was a big momentumchanger getting that first touchdown, and then getting some stops on defense,” Olson said.

“It really kicked us into gear.”

Newman led 13-7 at halftime after turning it over on downs when another drive stalled at the Orion 21 with less than a minute to play in the second quarter.

“We didn’t make any adjustments [on defense],” junior Chase Graham said after the rough start. “We got talked to; our effort was not there. That was not the Newman defense.

The next series, we came out ready to play, and that showed.

Our defense stopped them the rest of the game.”

That’s an understatement.

After rushing for 48 yards on

that first drive, Orion managed just 41 on the ground the rest of the game. Dawson Schulenberg threw for 177 yards, but a big chunk of that came on a 52-yard TD pass to Seth West on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The Comets then took control after the break. They drove 63 yards in 10 plays to open the third quarter, capped by Landen Vesley’s 1-yard QB sneak TD on fourth-and-goal, then picked off a Schulenberg pass on the next series. The teams then traded punts, but Orion’s traveled just 10 yards and set up Newman at the Charger 20-yard line.

Gorzny ran for a score on the very next play for a 25-7 lead.

Orion answered with the long passing TD, but Newman answered that answer as Gorzny scored his third TD of the game less than 2 minutes later.

Then Alec Faley nabbed his second interception of the game – and fourth in the last 2 weeks – on a long overthrown pass, and Newman had the ball back at its own 8-yard line. On the next play, Olson found a huge hole up the middle and outran a pair of Orion defenders for a 92-yard score to put the game on

ice with 8:57 to play.

“I just saw an opening, great execution by our linemen,” Olson said of the longest TD run of his career. “I just tried to set up the blocks as good as I could, and it worked.”

“It was like slow motion to me,” Gorzny added. “I was thinking, ‘Come on, get in there, get in there!’ And once he got into the end zone, I just started sprinting down the field to meet him.”

Newman ran 58 times for 428 yards, good for 7.4 yards per carry. Gorzny ran for 202 yards and three TDs on 28 carries, and Olson added 154 yards and two scores on 10 rushes. Speedster Easton Bianchi was limited to just 53 yards on 12 carries as the focus of Orion’s defensive game plan, but his backfield mates made that plan backfire.

“We’re going to try and take away your best weapon, and if whatever your next option is can beat us, then it does,” Filler said. “We’re not going to let your best player beat us, and give all credit to Mike [Papoccia] and his staff and his team.

They were the better football team.”

“It’s a credit to our senior leadership and the resolve the guys have,” Maloney said. “They love football, they’re a joyful bunch, and there’s nothing they want to do more than compete. We’ve got several guys that seem to step up in big moments, and we had a couple of sparks of that today.

“Obviously, Sterling’s a good football team. I’m just glad their defense didn’t score – they were scoring more points on defense than they were giving up. Offensively, they make you defend the whole field. That’s an awfully good team, and we just didn’t get the job done.”

After the Sterling defense forced a quick three-and-out, the offense got back at it and produced another score.

On a fourth-and-1 from the Marian 27, quarterback Trey Morse broke free through the line, spun out of a jersey grab by Marian defender Cameron Interrante near the 10, and raced into the end zone to put his team up 16-3 with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.

When Golden Warrior defensive back Alek Duran picked off a Marian pass early in the fourth quarter, it looked like Sterling would cruise. The Hurricanes, however, refused to go away.

Marian wide receiver Bryce Radcliffe got behind the Sterling defense and hauled in a 56-yard pass from AJ Golembiewski to put the Hurricanes in business at the Warriors’ 1. Two plays later, Gavin Scott scored on a sneak, after officials ruled he did not lose a fumble before scoring, to slice the deficit to 16-10 with 8:10 to play.

Marian got the ball back 3 minutes later and drove to the Sterling 40 before being denied. On a fourth-and-12 play from the Warriors’ 42, Willman broke through and sacked Golembiewski for a 7-yard loss.

The Hurricanes, however, were largely stymied by Sterling’s ferocious defense, with the exception of Radcliffe’s long reception to set up Marian’s lone TD. “I thought our defense played lights out again,” Schlemmer said.

The win snapped a five-game winning streak for Marian, and each of those were essentially

Local students hear about pumpkins, apples PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF OREGON – Through the Agriculture in the Classroom program in Ogle and Carroll counties, elementary students received information about growing apple trees and the life cycle of pumpkins in September and October.

According to a news release, younger elementary students “decorated” trees to

show the different seasons. Older elementary students made an apple chain so they could tell the “apple story” to their families.

Students heard the story “Pumpkin Jack” by Will Hubbell, about the life cycle of a pumpkin. Kindergarten students illustrated their own pumpkin books to share.

INDIANAPOLIS – Eastland FFA placed fourth in the National FFA Dairy Cattle Evaluation and Management Career Development Event Oct. 27 at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. In a news release, Eastland FFA advisor Cindy Feltmeyer wrote that the Eastland chapter competed agaisnt 43 other state teams. Eastland members included Connor Erbsen, Payton Erbsen, Elizabeth Kloepping, and Jared Dickman.

IFB and the German American Chambers of Commerce-Midwest, based in Chicago, held the discussion.

When he’s not using corn silage, Oestmann, who leads his county farm organization in Lower Saxony, uses sugar beets or wheat to generate power and heat.

“It’s not necessary to heat with oil,” Oestmann said. “You can heat with hot water going out of the biomass plant. For an area like Illinois, it could be another path for

income.”

Pesotum farmer Eric Rund agrees and has been to Oestmann’s country several times to learn how German farmers generate revenue from common crops as well as uncommon ones, such as miscanthus. The perennial, tall grass has been generating more net returns per acre for Rund over the past 3 years than his corn or soybeans.

“Don’t give up on another kind of crop,” Rund said. “We seem to be locked into corn and beans. We make more on the miscanthus per acre, by a longshot, than corn and beans.”
