month ago remains in a coma, her husband said Monday morning after a hearing in which a trial date was set for her accused attacker.

Six weeks later, Pamela Sue Knight, 59, of Dixon, still is “in very critical condition” at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, as her husband, Don Knight, her children and the rest

of her family struggle to come to terms with their new reality.

“It is my understanding at this time that my wife will require medical assistance and equipment to support her for the remainder of her life,” Knight said in a short statement given to reporters after the hearing.

Sucher has pleaded not guilty to felony aggravated battery; he is accused of kicking and beating a DCFS worker on Sept. 29, leaving her with brain injuries.

LANARK – A 25-year-old Lanark man was killed Oct. 31 in a head-on collision with a semitrailer near Cuba City, Wisconsin, where he worked.

Austin Todd Shellhause, who also lived in Hazel Green, Wisconsin, was eastbound in a 2013 Ford F150 when he crested a small hill on Tibbits Road and traveled into the path of the westbound 1997 Peterbilt, which was hauling grain, the Lafayette Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

Shellhause was flown to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, where he died.

His passenger, Kyle J. Mulcahy, 25, of Darlington, Wisconsin, and the semi driver, Steven H. Jones of Rewey, Wisconsin, who tried to avoid the crash, were taken to Upland Hills Hospital in Dodgeville with minor injuries, the release said.

Shellhause, a store manager for Sloan Implement in Cuba City, worked on the Boelkens, Janssen and Sturtevant Farms; played third base on Eastland Austin Todd High School’s 2009 team, Shellhause which placed fourth is state; attended Highland College in Freeport and graduated from the University of Wisconsin Platteville with an ag business/animal science degree in 2014.

Among others, he is survived by his mother, Gina Hockman of Freeport; his father, Todd Shellhause of Lanark; his sister, Hannah Shellhause of Loveland, Colorado; his maternal grandfather, Dean White of Roscoe; his paternal grandfather, Steve Shellhause of Lanark; and his girlfriend, Marie Muir of Dubuque, Iowa.

His funeral was Saturday at Eastland High School, where he graduated in 2010.

Friday, to avoid the appearance of a potential conflict of interest, Kane

gave Sucher until today to decide whether he wanted a different judge.

After both sides agreed to the gathering of Sucher’s blood, hair and saliva for DNA testing, Kane set trial for 9 a.m. Jan. 30; it is expected to last at least the duration of that week.

His next pretrial hearing is Dec. 18.

Sucher is accused of kicking and beating the child welfare investigator outside his parents’ Milledgeville home

around 5:45 p.m., as she arrived to take protective custody of a 2-year-old after Sucher was charged in Whiteside County with felony aggravated battery of a child in the beating of a 6-year-old boy.

He also was charged with domestic violence in that case after he threw his girlfriend against a wall, court records show.

A jury trial has been set for Nov. 14; he is represented by Public Defender James Heuerman.

Board member Cheryl Cole voiced her concerns with the proposed levy, saying she still has issues with the VAC asking for more money while not spending funds previously allocated. “They still haven’t handed out all the money to help the veterans,� she said. “They call them repeat offenders and losers, but the money is there to help and they haven’t even handed it all out, and they keep saying they need more funds to help them.�

OBITUARIES AUSTIN T. SHELLHAUSE HAZEL GREEN, Wisconsin – Austin Todd Shellhause, 25, of Hazel Green and Lanark, lived life to the fullest, sharing his “gogetter” spirit with friends and family. Whenever he was around, life was fun and full of energy. Austin died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017, from injuries suffered in a vehicular accident while working near Cuba City, Wisconsin.

Austin was born Aug. 9, 1992, in Freeport, the son of Todd (Stacey Byer) Shellhause and Gina (Jeff) (White) Hockman. His mom says, “Austin was a farm boy from Day 1.” As a young man, Austin worked on the Boelkens, Janssen and Sturtevant farms. He is a graduate of Eastland High School with the class of 2010, where he played third base in baseball on the 2009 fourth-place state team. He went on to attend Highland College and graduated in 2014 from the University of Wisconsin Platteville with an ag business, animal science degree. Austin enjoyed playing golf with Grandpa Dean. He also loved to hunt, fish, snowmobile, ride dirt

After graduation from UW Platteville, Austin worked as a technician for Sloan Implement in Cuba City, and was promoted to store manager in 2016. He was a great people person and enjoyed his work and customers.

EVELYN L. ‘LEE’ ONCKEN MILLEDGEVILLE – Evelyn L. “Lynn” Hull Oncken, 84, of Milledgeville, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, at Regency Care Clinic in Sterling, from an extended illness.

Lynn was born Dec. 17, 1932, in Batavia, the daughter of Clark Arthur Hull and Beatrice (Bell) Hull. Lynn married Keith Oncken on Sept. 10, 1950, with Lynn’s father, a Methodist minister, conducting the marriage ceremony.

Lynn grew up in a musical family and played her first piano solo at age 3. When she moved to Milledgeville as a sophomore, she won first at district and second in state competition, and later

earned a piano scholarship at Cornell College. By that time, she had met the love of her life, Keith, and they were married shortly after high school. Lynn and Keith recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.

Lynn pursued her lifelong interest in music by teaching piano lessons and by serving 25 years as church organist at Messiah Lutheran Church. She loved animals, enjoyed nature, and was the inspiration for many family camping trips in the summer. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Lynn is survived by her husband, Keith; two daughters, Vicki Sandhu of Elgin and Deborah (Bill) Crowson of Dixon; one son-in-law, Mike Ford of Dixon; four grandchildren, Chris (Jennifer) Diehl, Jamie (Tasha Morton) Diehl, Nicole Diehl, and Allison Brantley; six great-grandchildren, Haylee, Kilee, Ashley, Blake, Ashtyn, and Audrey; many nieces and nephews; special care providers, Mirna Cabrera and Isela Calderon; and neighbor, Roxanne Francis.

Lynn was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Frances Townsen and Marion Indreika; one brother, Clark Hull; and one daughter, Kristy Oncken Ford.

The funeral was 10:30 a.m. Monday at Messiah

Lutheran Church in Sterling, with Pastor Kirk Neugebauer officiating. Burial was at South Elkhorn Cemetery near Milledgeville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Hospice of the Rock River Valley, Messiah Lutheran Church, and Milledgeville Fire Department.

MICHAEL J. FAGAN SHANNON – Michael John Fagan, 84, of Shannon, passed away Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, at Stephenson Nursing Center in Freeport.

Michael was born Oct. 14, 1933, in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, to Olive (Sims) and Joseph Fagan.

During his lifetime, he spent 20 years in the Marine Corps, retiring in 1972, and 20 years at Kelly Springfield in Freeport, retiring in 1992.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara (Jochheim) Fagan; his children, Tim (Rose), Kevin (Ruth), Sean (Teresa), Brian (Lori), and Raymond; his seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He also is survived by five sisters, Anne Westhoven of Pennsylvania, Kathleen Craft of Texas, Charlotte Klee of West Virginia, Rosemarie Barthen of Pennsylvania, and Joanne Pajak of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra, his parents, two brothers, and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hermann Funeral Home in Shannon. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Wendelin Catholic Church in Shannon. Interment will be at St. Wendelin Catholic Cemetery in Shannon.

A memorial fund has been established for the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society.

Homeless benefit breakfast in Morrison MORRISON – Morrison Tech will have a pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. to start its’ observance of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.

“We got the ball right before the fourth quarter, and Coach just said this would be a great time to have like a 9-minute drive,” senior running back Mitch McNutt said. “I think it only ended up being 6 minutes, but it ended with a score, and that’s what we needed.”

“The question people have asked us is can we play four quarters,” Allen said. “We proved that today. West Carroll was as physical and as fast of a team as we have played. They pushed us, and we needed that drive.”

The West Carroll (7-4) offense never found a rhythm against the Falcons. The Thunder were held to 120 total yards, with 68 of those coming on the first drive of the third quarter.

“We struggled a lot on offense,” Plattenberger said. “They did a good job of taking away the things that we wanted to do.”

The Thunder scored on the opening drive of the third quarter to draw within three points at 9-6.

Missiles have some fun as season comes to close Milledgeville throws in some trickery during 49-16 defeat

BY ADAM FEINER Sauk Valley Media afeiner@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5550 LENA – It would have been easy for the Milledgeville Missiles to let their heads hang low trailing by 41 points Saturday.

Instead, they chose to have a little fun in their second-round playoff game against Lena-Winslow.

Nate Rahn took a handoff on a counter play and found daylight. Instead of scoring his second touchdown, Rahn pitched the ball to QB Jack Munz near the end zone, and both juniors trotted past the goal line as a capper to the Missiles’ 49-16 loss.

“There’s really no reason to pitch it, but it’s fun,” Munz said.

“Coach [Gary] Hartje, the old mastermind, in

his days with the semifinal 2008 team did that,” Rahn said. “We’ve practiced that since sixth grade and have never had the chance to do it. That was pretty cool.”

Rahn got the Missiles (8-3) on the board with an 8-yard TD run with 4:23 left in the third quarter, while Carson Boyer ran in the 2-point conversion.

What wasn’t fun for Milledgeville was the first half. Lena-Winslow (11-0) showed why it is the No. 1-ranked team in 1A with 43 first-half points. Two of the Panthers’ six touchdowns in the half came on receptions by tight end Isaiah Bruce as the Missiles sold out to try to stop Le-Win’s vaunted rushing attack.

The most enjoyable moment for the 6-foot3, 240-pound sophomore came when he completed a pancake block to help Eli Lingle find the end zone on a 55-yard interception touchdown.

“The pancake was more fun,” Bruce said. “I just like helping out wherever I can.”

Fulton running game nullified by Forreston defense in 30-6 loss

The Steamers had a bit of success, but not nearly enough

to hang with the Cardinals, who rolled to a 30-6 victory Saturday afternoon in a Class 1A second-round game.

Fulton (7-4) had 11 carries for minus-42 yards in the first half.

Austin Schroeder, who entered the game with 164 carries for 1,374 yards, had four carries for minus-17 yards before halftime. Quarterback Bryce Grant, counting sack yardage, had three

attempts for minus-26 yards.

The Steamers had six 3-andouts in seven first-half possessions, with the lone exception coming when Grant lost a fumble on a first-down play.

“The first half, we knew Forreston was good, and they were pressuring on the edge,” Grant said. “I was having to scramble a little bit. The second half, we figured it out and started mov-

ing the ball a little bit.”

The Steamers all but abandoned the run in the second half, and did have some success through the air. Grant threw for 73 yards in the last two quarters, and he also hauled in a 27-yard halfback option pass from Schroeder for Fulton’s only score.

Grant also provided Fulton with a much-needed defensive spark when his interception

stopped a Forreston drive deep in Steamers’ territory early in the second half.

The defending state champion Cardinals (10-1) wasted little time in seizing control, with touchdowns on three of their first four possessions, and moving the ball virtually at will on the ground.

Mighty Bulldogs put an end to Eastland’s season in semifinal

A late rally had the Cougars on the verge of stealing the first set away from mighty Durand in the first semifinal Oct. 30 at the Class 1A Newman Sectional.

Instead, the Bulldogs survived, then regrouped on their way to a 26-24, 25-12 victory, and with it, a berth in the sectional final.

Eastland (17-17-1) was down by six points (22-16) late in the first set before making things interesting. A service error, a bad set and a hitting error by Durand got the Cougars to within 24-22. That was followed by a tip kill by Karlie Krogman and an ace by Mac Byer to knot the score at 24-24, whipping the Eastland crowd into a frenzy.

Durand (32-1-1), however, quickly restored order. A tip kill by Abby Erickson got the Bulldogs to set point, and a kill from Katie Nevdal finished things off.

“The first match was so exciting,” Byer said. “I’ll remember this match by the crowd just screaming at the end of that first match. It was awesome.”

The Cougars jumped out to a 5-1 lead, capped by an ace from Jordan Miller, in the second set, but it was all Bulldogs after that. Durand scored eight straight points after Eastland’s early run, and steadily pulled away from

there.

“They were just fighting really hard,” Byer said. “We were too, but I think they just had us beat. Somewhere in the middle, I think my entire team realized, or at least I did, oh, this is starting to end. The reality of it hit us.”

Katie Krogman paced Eastland with seven kills, six digs and three blocks, while Sage Walrath added four kills. Gabby Snyder contributed 13 digs, and Erica Dambman (11) and Erin Henze (7) combined for 18 assists.

Coming off two trips to state, including a championship in 2015, Eastland was expected to be in rebuild mode in 2017.

It didn’t post the gaudy record of some of the Cougar teams of the recent past, but did rally to win a regional for the 16th time in the last 20 seasons.

“I’m extremely proud of these young ladies and what they accomplished this year,” first-year head coach Kelsey Pierce said. “I told them from the start won-loss records don’t matter to me. What matters to me is that we grow as a team, and that we get better every contest. I feel that we did that. Nobody thought we would be in the running for a regional, and we ended up having a great end to our year.”

“I think the strongest thing we had this year wasn’t hitting skill or anything like that,” Byer added. “We set a goal that we wanted to feel like a team. Before, we hadn’t felt like a team. I think we achieved that in the middle of the season, and

McKenzie Damon led Durand with eight kills, Alyssa Brauer had six kills and a block, Kaite Asche had five kills and two blocks, and Marissa Kelsey and Jaci Damon each had seven digs.

Kelsey also dished 22 assists.

Durand head coach Molly Kelsey looked at defense as the key to getting things turned in the Bulldogs’ favor.

“The first game we didn’t have control of our defense, nor our serve receive,” Kelsey said. “The second game, we knew where they wanted to hit, and that really helped us set our defense. That was the difference.”

Durand avenged a three-set loss to Eastland in a 2016 Eastland Sectional semifinal. This year, the Bulldogs’ lone loss was to Stockton, and they tied Riverdale.

“Our offensive line is able to get a push every play,” Badertscher said.

“We’ve got good backs that follow a good offensive line. It’s fun to play

in an offense like that.”

Forreston coach Denny Diduch was thrilled to see his team perform the way it did early.

“We’re both trying to feel each other out,” Diduch said. “If we’re able to get some points and some 3-and-outs early, we can build some momentum. As they figured things out, they were able to find some holes. It’s very important, especially in the playoffs with two teams that aren’t familiar with each other, to win that first 8 minutes.”

Falling in that back-and-forth first game was a tough pill for Sterling to swallow, and Limestone took advantage. The Rockets ran out to a 10-2 lead in the second set, and the Warriors never recovered.

Josi Borum led Sterling with 11 kills, and also had five digs and four assists. Good added five kills, and Brooklyn and Breelyn Borum each had four kills, with Bree dishing 13 assists and Brook chipping in 11 digs. Rodriguez led the back row with 13 digs.

After a pair of first-quarter fumbles led to an early deficit, the Comets turned the tables on the Eagles by converting two secondquarter Hope turnovers into touchdowns to pull away for a victory at Roscoe Eades Stadium Big plays really boosted Newman (11-0). The Comets had 10 runs of 10 or more yards, including five that went for at least 20 – and four of those went for touchdowns.

Bianchi had two scores of over 50 yards (70 & 52), Nate Olson added a 58-yard scoring scamper, and Cade Gorzny had a 36-yard TD run.

Newman also had a 47-yard TD pass from Landen Vesley to a wide-open Karter Decker late in the first quarter for a 13-8 lead the Comets never relinquished.

One of the big reasons for the big plays was the alignment of the Hope defense. The Eagles (8-3) lined up all 11 defenders within 7 yards of the line of scrimmage, so when the Newman backs got through the first level, there was nobody there to stop them.

Bianchi ran for 204 yards, Gorzny added 131 yards, and Vesley threw for 103 yards on 4-for-6 passing – 3 of those completuons went for more than 15 yards – as the Comets racked up 513 yards of total offense, including 410 on the ground.

Olson led the Newman defense with nine tackles – two for loss – Clayton Yde added nine tackles, and Chase Graham had eight tackles, including three for loss.

Sterling 46, Kaneland 20: The Sterling defense kept creating turnovers, and even when the defense didn’t score on its own, it put the Golden Warriors’ offense in prime position. Four interceptions and a fumble by Kaneland led to five touchdowns for Sterling in the Warriors’ win in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs on Saturday at Peterson Field.

The big night for the Sterling defense included two touchdowns for Marquez Williams. The first

came on a fumble recovery that he returned 54 yards. His second score came on the first play of the second half, a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Isaiah Ryan got in on the act later in the third quarter. With Kaneland threatening at the Sterling 7-yard line, Ryan jumped in front of a pass in the end zone and went 103 yards for the score.

Kaneland’s next offensive play resulted in a Turner Garcia interception, and Williams cashed in on the following play with a 9-yard touchdown run.

An Alek Duran interception on Kaneland’s first offensive snap of the game led to a Trey Morse-toDuran touchdown pass six plays later.

Kaneland quarterback Jack Douglas was 11-for-31 passing for 193 yards, but was intercepted four times.

Sterling’s Nyrel Sullivan had 23 carries for 104 yards and two touchdowns, scoring from 37 yards out on the game’s opening drive, and cashing in from 2 yards out after back-to-back passes from Morse found Marcus Shetter and Weston Sisson for long gains.

hose who must file the UCR, ... FYI! The Unified Carrier Registration Board of Directors has announced that the start of the 2018 registration period will be postponed until further notice.

They’re still awaiting completion of the rulemaking process for 2018 fees by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

The UCR board is recommending that the enforcement period for 2018 compliance not begin until 90 days after the final rulemaking is published. That decision could be up to the individual participating states, but we anticipate they’ll follow the UCR board recommendation.

Cole said better organization would result in higher efficiency, reducing the time and money spent on training, travel and wages.

“If the VAC were going to give all the $44,000 to the veterans I would be all for it, but I don’t think they need a second employee,” she said.

“Many larger veterans assistance organizations operate with one employee; why do we need two?”

Board member Joseph Payette spoke to the difficulties faced by the board in defining the VACs’ responsibilities.

Payette said he has concerns with going to court because Carroll County has a less than stellar record with lawsuits.

“If we can come to a consensus here, maybe that is better than letting a judge tell us something that we would be fearful of,” he said.

Payette then suggested the board consider establishing a levy funding its VAC. He said he thinks it is the County Board’s responsibility to decide how the VAC does its work.

“I think it is our responsibility, based on my interpretation of what the law is, and thereby

the budget reflects what we think they need to be doing,” Payette said.

“Their board thinks otherwise, so in this case, I’m leaning toward letting a judge tell us. If we lose, we are pretty much in the flow of how we’ve done previous lawsuits, but at least we get a clarification of how it is done.”

He said if the Hartman motion establishing a levy using the amount the board had already been allocated in its budget discussions he would support it.

“But, to give another ten grand because that may prevent the lawsuit from proceeding and free up our personnel from

handling checks and all that I think is a lot” Payette said. “I think our original premise that one person could do 16 hours of work, and fit the requirements of the VAC and its responsibilities to the county should stand.”

A roll call 5-3 yes vote passed the motion moving the levy into the draft budget to be voted on when the final budget is passed at the Nov. 16, board meeting.

VAC Superintendent William Hanna declined to comment, citing ongoing litigation.

In other business, the board approved an ordinance increasing the GIS fees and a second ordinance updating the circuit court filing fees.

The next regularly scheduled County Board meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 16, in the small courtroom in the county courthouse.

‘Made in America’ spotlight shines on Wahl Clipper Company a stop on Walmart manufacturing tour

While its larger competitors were outsourcing jobs, the Sterling-based worldwide leader in consumer personal care products has continued to invest at home, continually increasing its local workforce and putting millions into the expansion of its headquarters.

Ground will be broken on another building project next year.

Walmart, the company’s largest customer, brought its “Made in America” movement to Sterling on Oct. 30, drawing a large group of politicians, local leaders and employees of both companies.

Central to Walmart’s initiative, which began in 2013, is the retail giant’s pledge to buy an additional $250 billion in American-made products by 2023.

“We’re trying to do one of these events in every state this year, and we thought this would be a good opportunity to highlight Wahl Clipper’s new facility and the investments they continue to make here,” said Kevin Thompson, director of public affairs at Walmart.

Wahl Clipper has more than 1,000 workers in Sterling, and it attributes about 100 jobs to its longtime partnership with Walmart. While navigating turbulent economic cycles, Wahl Clipper hasn’t laid off a worker in about 50 years, a source of great pride for CEO

The manufacturing landscape, however, is very different from the one his grandfather, Leo Wahl, had in mind when he founded the company 98 years ago.

“With globalization, competitors much larger than us were sending jobs to the Far East, and while others were outsourcing, we were winning awards for exporting our products,” Wahl said.

China became an important part of its growth strategy, and exporting to that market carries a 30 percent tariff.

“International playing fields

aren’t always fair, but we fought to succeed,” Wahl said.

Wahl Clipper has eight manufacturing sites worldwide, but 70 percent of its revenues are generated from the Sterling plant. It’s also remained a private company, making it easier to stick with its long-term formula for success.

“There’s a big difference between having an operational focus and being investment-driven,” Wahl said.

“We thought long and hard about long-term success, and for us it’s about people and process – we aspire to make

the best products in the world.”

U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline, State Sen. Neil Anderson, R-Andalusia, and State Rep. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, were on hand for the event.

Bustos has worked on the Democrat-led “Make It In America” initiative, a package of bills that aim to create middle-class jobs through a rebirth of manufacturing. Buying American products and investing in workforce training is at the core of the plan.

“We have a field hearing next month for our “Make It In America” caucus, and the focus will be on how we can make more products in America,” Bustos said. “If we could all focus on American

products and partnerships, our state and country would be very different places.”

Walmart aims to create an estimated 1 million jobs through its 10-year manufacturing plan, and the company says the emphasis on American-made products is building momentum.

“Our customers have told us that second to price, where products are made influences their purchasing decisions,” said Cindi Marsiglio, Walmart’s vice president for U.S. manufacturing.

As part of its initiative, Walmart has sponsored several events that allow American companies to make a pitch for the retailer to carry its products or expand its presence on Walmart’s shelves.

“We sent groups of six to 12 people up to Alaska to do projects. Things started tightening up 3 years ago, and spending $1,500 to send someone 1,500 miles wasn’t really necessary. We decided to do a vacation workshop locally, because we didn’t have to go 1,500 miles to

find someone to help,” Roberts said.

Ladies at First Brethren would make breakfast for the volunteers, who provided their own lunch. The need for volunteer was tangible, with 925 volunteer hours given during the 6-day period in 2016, and 1,099 hours, 45

minutes this year.

“The interesting part was, we didn’t know was how many students we’d get. 32 percent of participants were students this past June,” Roberts said.

Roberts said he hopes the program will be ongoing.

According to a news release, biologists at the site investigated the deaths of 58 bald eagles. Some of the dead birds had eaten lead in amounts many times above the clinical lethal level. Lead can cause muscle paralysis, blindness, and inability to fly in eagles.

Further research found eagles often ate ammunition fragments containing lead from piles of deer remains left behind by hunters.
