Assembly required: Students tour Savanna plant West Carroll kids learn about auto parts plant

BY PHILLIP HARTMAN Prairie Advocate phartman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5525 SAVANNA – If a North Americanmade truck rolls by, there’s a good chance its wheel fasteners were made in Carroll County.

That was among the things a group of about 45 West Carroll High School students learned Thursday as they toured the MacLean-Fogg Component Solutions plant, also known as Metform, south of Savanna. The visit was part of National Manufacturing Day activities through Tri-County Economic Development Alliance of Northwest Illinois.

The company also has two additional Savanna sites, and one in Mount Car-

roll, employing about 390 people locally, and has operations worldwide.

Metform production manager Jake Bellich gave the students an overview of Metform’s products and operations.

The company produces transmission gears, fasteners, and many other automotive parts for Ford, General Motors, John Deere, Caterpillar, and other companies.

“Semis deliver 8 to 10 loads of steel to our hot form plant every day,” Bellich said.

The steel is heated and shaped at the hot form plant, with some parts finished there and others at a second building on the plant grounds. Ten Hatebur presses made in Switzerland operate at the hot forming plant, often heating the steel to more than 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, with a part coming off the press every second.

Board issues bonds, discusses tax referendum possibilities

BY MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – The West Carroll school board on Oct. 18 voted to issue more than $6 million in bonds in a step it says will aid the financial health of the district.

The board approved issuing about $6.15 million in general obligation refunding school bonds over 8 years (2018 to 2026) to refund outstanding district bonds that will close in December.

The board heard a lengthy report on bond refinancing options from Anne Noble, of Stifel, Nicolaus and Company.

Noble gave board members information so that they could best determine when to refinance the 2008 bonds. These bonds, she said, would mature from 2018 to 2026.

The net present value of savings, expressed as a percentage, would be more than 18 percent; the industry standard is at least 3 percent. The current interest rate on these bonds is 2.9 percent.

Noble said the cumulative savings on these bonds for district taxpayers will be more than $1 million, or about $120,000 for each of the 8 years.

Two options for refinancing were available to the district; one which would level the savings over the maturity period, and one which would level the tax levy over the same period.

Ultimately, the board voted to approve a reso-

lution that opted for the “level levy” option.

Audit reveals ‘no major problems’ Jenny Blocker of the Benning Group summarized the firm’s findings from its FY 2017 financial audit of the district.

Blocker reported that there were no major problems found with the district procedures, and that West Carroll had attained the same score as the previous year, which put it once again in a “review” status. She also noted that the expense per pupil for 2017 was $12,209, and the district’s total operating expenses for the year were $12,664,763.

Primary School Principal Andrew Jordan reported that state Rep. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, and Thomson Village President Vicki Trager had toured the Primary School, with Savanna Mayor Chris Lain set to tour the following week.

High School Principal Jeff Utsinger reported on the Career Cruising website, which allows students and adults to match their interests with a wide variety of relevant careers and help them prepare for their future.

Educational Fund tax hike referendum explored District Superintendent Adam Brumbaugh delivered a presentation based on a spreadsheet

which demonstrated the effect of a proposed tax rate increase referendum to help shore up the district’s Educational Fund, its effects on property owners, and increased revenue to the district.

Brumbaugh’s spreadsheet illustrated a wide sampling of tax rate increases and their effects on properties of varying worth. For instance, a 30-cent tax rate increase on a $50,000 home would result in an increase in $50 in property taxes on the home, and an additional $351,000 to the district in annual revenue.

Brumbaugh advised that two questions should be addressed when calculating what

type of increase to ask for: “How much do we ask the taxpayers for?” and “How much do we need in the Ed Fund reserve?”

One important factor the board noted that should be stressed is that the tax rate increase would be offset somewhat by the savings from the bond and interest repayment; after a period of time, perhaps 5 years, this would amount to a 22-cent offset of the raised rate.

Board member Jessica Edwards also pointed out that whatever rate is voted on would be the maximum amount the district could levy; it could levy for less.

OBITUARIES GEORGE A. STEPHENS LANARK – George A. Stephens, 79, of Lanark, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, near his home, during a walk with his dog, Roscoe.

George was born Jan. 4, 1938, in Elgin, the son of James and Anna (Jensen) Stephens. He attended Elgin High School, graduating with the Class of 1956. He was a printer by trade and owned and operated Stephens Quality Printing in South Elgin for many years. George married Mary in 1957 in Elgin.

George was a very giving and considerate person who was always the first to help others. He loved passing on his knowledge and wisdom. He enjoyed roller skating, fishing, gardening, playing cards, puzzles, riding motorcycles, spending time with his family, and spoiling his dogs.

George will be dearly missed by his son, Wayne Stephens; daughter, Emily (Jesse) Varsho of Elburn; four granddaughters, Meggan Flores, Samantha Stephens, and Mackenzie and Samantha Varsho; five great-granddaughters, Kayla SzewkiFlores, Sophia, Evalina and Olivia Stephens, and Sofie Flores; one sister, Caroline (Karl) Winther of Show Low, Arizona; and his companion, Sherrie Zarndt of Lanark.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; a daughter, Penny Szewki; two brothers, Russell and James; a sister, Martha; and two special friends, JoAnne Martin and Carol Wood.

A graveside service was Oct. 21 at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery in Elgin.

Firing prompts alderman to seek to curtail mayor’s powers Treasurer challenges reasons given for her firing on Oct. 12

LANARK – A city alderman is seeking to curtail Mayor Ken Viglietta’s power to fire city employees after the fourth firing or resignation of a city official in 5 months.

Ward 3 Alderman Jay VanMatre said he was shocked by Treasurer Carol Kruzek’s firing Oct. 12. VanMatre and Ward 2 Alderman Brad Knutti attempted to reinstate Kruzek at the Oct. 17 City Council meeting, failing by a 3-2 vote.

“When I found out that Ken went and fired her (Carol) on his own accord, ... he had talked with all the aldermen on the phone and I guess got their feeling for what was going on in his mind with Carol. And was trying to get us all on his side, I guess. He called all the

aldermen to let us know that she was resigning,” VanMatre said.

The Oct. 17 meeting Mayor Ken Viglietta was heated, with about 20 members of the public attending, and several speaking in Kruzek’s defense. Among them was former Ward 2 alderman Lara Tallman, who resigned Sept. 6 and had been the latest official to leave Lanark government.

Tallman has not spoken about her reasons for resigning. At the meeting, she said to the sitting aldermen, “A phone call to see what your feelings are is not a vote, it is not consent. It is a discussion. Please get clearer on who you are serving.”

Weston Burkholder was appointed to Tall-

man’s seat. He, with Ward 1 aldermen Haley Grim and Lance Leverton, voted not to reinstate Kruzek, while Ward 3 alderman Mark Macomber was absent.

Viglietta provided alderman a list of 11 reasons he fired Kruzek, who was appointed in 2014. Kruzek says the reasons are either for duties of the utility clerk and not the treasurer, or are “malicious lies.”

Among given reasons are claims that the city’s accounts have not been

balanced since June, that Kruzek has been late in withholding and forwarding on child support, and was unable to master new software for managing the city’s accounts.

In an email to the Prairie Advocate, Kruzek said she would meet with her attorney, Tom Suits of Polo, and was waiting to respond to Viglietta’s allegations, saying she didn’t want to jeopardize anything.

One example of the company’s product volume is the 24 million Surex brand wheel nuts made annually. “it’s a good likeihood that on any North American-made truck, the wheel fasteners were made in Savanna,” Bellich said.

After the presentation, the students broke into groups, with one touring the hot form plant and another touring the other plant. Large fans helped keep the air moving in the hot form plant, with still-red-hot parts coming off a roller and into a bin.

the company examines parts at both buildings, and metallurgist Taylor Grieve examines materials under a microscope to ensure they meet customers’ requirements.

“Customers may want it soft so they can machine it, or hard for durability,” Grieve said.

Engineer Kyle Johnson led tours of the other plant, where a great deal of work for companies like Chrysler is done. A number of the assembly machines use robots, which require computer programming skills to operate properly.

The other plant also houses Metform’s shipping department, headed

by Bryan Ranchino.

“We have 25 trucks a day, moving about $750,000 to $1 million worth of parts,” Ranchino said.

The morning ended with a pizza lunch at the hot form plant’s cafeteria. Students shared their impressions of the tour.

“I liked it. It seems pretty neat for summer work,” Carlos Rodriguez, 17, of Savanna, said.

Ashlynn Rahn, 15, of Savanna, thought the tour was really cool.

“I’d like to go into art, but I do like engineering, math, and science,” Rahn said.

Cheyanne Moreland, 17, of Savanna, said she learned a lot, and that she’d like to go into a technical field.

“I like computers and fixing them,” she said.

Brandon Byrne, 18, of Mount Carroll, said the tour was very informative.

Metform’s products also may affect his career path.

“I’m going to school for race car technician,” Byrne said.

The tour was one of nine programs sponsored for National Manufacturing Day across Carroll and JoDaviess counties to promote business opportunities in Carroll, JoDaviess, Whiteside, and other northwestern Illinois counties.

Brumbaugh also illustrated the need for more money in the Ed Fund; with rising costs of insurance and increases in both certified and noncertified salaries. Assuming that salaries go up 1 percent each year and health insurance costs go up 5 percent, by 2021 the district could need an extra $1.2 million.

He then spent the next day reviewing disciplinary actions in the city codebook.

“What I came up with was that the mayor didn’t do anything wrong firing the treasurer on his own accord.

I have a problem with that,” VanMatre said.

State code allows a mayor to dismiss an appointed officer if “he is of the opinion that the interests of the municipality demand removal.”

The same code allows aldermen to vote by a two-thirds majority

to restore the officer’s employment.

“I would like to enact legislation to have the same, simple majority vote to have them removed. We can be more restrictive than the state code, but not less restrictive,” VanMatre said.

The departures of officials began June 20, when the council voted 5-1 to fire then-maintenance manager Tom Difazzio after an executive session lasting more than an hour. VanMatre voted against the decision.

Geoff Williams is now maintenance manager.

In a June 26 news release, officials wrote that Difazzio was notified June 12 by Viglietta of his employment’s suspension, and was advised it was based

on non-performance of duties and complaints about his demeanor when dealing with other maintenance employees and the public.

Pork producers powerful, efficient in Illinois O

ctober is National Pork Month. Illinois is home to nearly 2,000 hog farms.

The hog industry alone contributes more than $1.8 million to the state’s economy. With 42 percent of the market share, pork is the most widely consumed meat in the world. Pork’s most popular cuts include ham, sausage, bacon, lunch meat and pork chops.

Pork is a great source of many vitamins and minerals, including Vitamins B6 and B12, thiamin, iron, and more.

It is also a great source of protein. By dry weight, the protein content of lean pork can be as high as 89 percent, making it one of the richest dietary sources of protein.

Some quick facts you probably don’t know about pork: More than 63,000 pig farmers produce more than 22 billion pounds of bacon each year. Pig farms have evolved over the years.

••• As a longtime baseball and Cubs fan, the passion of the moment caught me and I decided to bite the bullet and head to Game 3 of the NLCS. Yeah, it wasn’t the best decision when I found out the game was an 8 p.m. game. I am not a night person, and driving home from Chicago in the middle of the night is not my forte, but you only live once!

And since we got Maggie, I have gotten to the

point where I can function on a lot less sleep than I used to! It was a night of many firsts.

However, I thought it was a great opportunity for Tucker and I to check something off the bucket list. I wish I could say it was my first time seeing the Cubs lose. It was certainly my first playoff game and my first time hitting traffic like that while going into Chicago.

About 14 miles away, we were deadlocked and didn’t go more than 10 mph for about 3 miles. ...

YIKES! I am used to flying in there.

While the game started off great – Who can beat a home run on the first pitch for the second batter for the Cubs? – the home team didn’t fare well the rest of the night.

The vibe was great, though. In true fashion for the majority of the game, Cubs fans were still upbeat, well until the score was 6-1. It was also addicting! I cannot wait to go back for a playoff game with a better outcome!

The Wildcatz were able to rest easy after rolling to a 41-7 victory in an NUIC crossover. For the Marcos, a day-long waiting game was in the works, and they fell off the playoff bubble on Saturday night without a postseason spot.

EPC (5-4) became playoff eligible with the win, and was in good shape with 41 playoff points (combined wins by its nine opponents). In the past 5 years, the cutoff mark for 5-4 teams to get in had been 37 points (2016), 35 (2015), 39 (2014), 36 (2013) and 38 (2012).

“We knew we needed this game,” junior running back Jayden Kempel said, “and it feels really good to come out and play the way we did.”

Tickets punched, region’s playoff teams get first-round assignments

For Newman, that means a third meeting in 6 years with Aurora Christian.

Newman drew the No. 1 seed in Class 2A, but the reward is a first-round game against No. 16 seed Aurora Christian.

“It’s a very tough first game for being a 1 seed, but we have to play where they put us,” Newman coach Mike Papoccia said.

The Comets beat the Eagles

44-21 in a first-round game in 2014. Aurora Christian beat Newman 41-7 in a Class 3A semifinal in 2012.

“I’m sure it’s the same type of team,” Papoccia said.

“They always have some big, strong linemen, and their quarterback is very talented.

They throw the ball a lot.

They play tough defense because they’ve played some stiff competition. We’re going to have to be on our best.”

Sterling (9-0) drew the No. 2 seed in the North in Class 5A and will open the postseason against No. 15 St. Viator (5-4).

“I don’t know too much about them,” Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said. “I know the league they play in, and it’s one of the better leagues

in Illinois. They’re obviously well-tested.”

St. Viator went 4-3 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference this year. Conference rivals Marist, Nazareth Academy, Niles Notre Dame, Benet Academy and Woodstock Marian all made the playoffs this year.

In Class 1A, Fulton (6-3) will be making a short trip south to take on Ottawa Marquette. The Crusaders (7-2) were champions of the Northeast Athletic Conference and proved to be a dangerous foe a year ago, when they advanced to the semifinals before losing to eventual state champion Forreston.

This is the Falcons’ 17th appearance, and 12th in the last 13 seasons. Their deepest run came in 2009, when they reached the 2A semifinals before losing at Morrison.

The Knights have gone up against NUIC competition before in the playoffs, most recently in a 46-33 2A semifinal loss to Eastland-Pearl City in 2014.

Other than that, Thunder coach Matt Leitzen didn’t know a whole lot else about this year’s version of their opponents.

“They played EPC a couple of years ago during EPC’s title run, so I’ve watched them once, but that was 3 years ago,” Leitzen said. “We don’t know a whole lot about them, but I do know that they were one of the teams that we were projected to play. We’ve done a little work, but not a whole lot yet.”

West Carroll has won only one playoff game, coming in 2007 at Illini West – successors of state power program Carthage. Two years ago, the Thunder were shut out

22-0 against Tri-Valley in Downs.

The Knights were runners-up this year in the Large Division of the Heart of Illinois Conference, behind Tri-Valley.

“I don’t think you ever let the travel bother you if you’re glad you get an opportunity to play in the postseason,” Leitzen said.

“It’s a little bit of a haul, but it’s something we’ve been accustomed to when we’ve been in the playoffs.”

After finishing 7-2, Milledgeville had about a 50 percent chance of hosting a first-round playoff game – and the Missiles drew an No. 8 seed and will play hosts at Floyd Daub Field against No. 9 Abingdon-Avon, time and date to be determined.

The Tornadoes are also 7-2, and play in the Black Division of the Prairieland Conference. They are coming off of a winless season, and opened this year by winning

their first five games.

Missiles coach Jason Wroble, like most others when hearing about their first-round opponents, didn’t know a whole lot about the Tornadoes right away.

“We’re really excited about that,” Wroble said of hosting a playoff game.

“That was one of our goals going into the season, to host a game and advance in the playoffs.

We thought going into [Friday] that we had to get a W [against Aquin] to get a home game.

“We got one goal down, and hopefully with a little bit of fortune and a little bit of luck we can get to goal two and advance.”

Polo was among 17 teams that finished with a 5-4 record and did not earn a playoff berth. The Marcos had 38 playoff points, or wins by their nine opponents, but needed 39 to get into a tiebreaker for the final playoff berths.

County Board rejects VAC request for levy

BY TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL – The Carroll County Board neared completion of its FY 2018 budget Thursday when it approved budget proposals from the offices of the Circuit Clerk, Judicial and Highways.

Clerk of the Circuit Court Patti Hiher requested an increase of 25 percent in the department’s equipment line item citing software updates.

Hiher touched on seniority issues stemming from a 2017 mid-year adjustment and said the matter was in negotiation.

Budget proposals from the waste management, judicial, and FICA sectors remained flat, and the board tentatively approved a 3 percent wage increase, noting a moderate recovery from its 2017 budgetary decision to hold the line on

wages.

The Veteran’s Assistance Commission returned to the budget discussions, requesting the board reconsider a .0174 percent levy that would increase its fund balance by $60,030.

Board member Paul Hartman moved to establish the requested levy, with the understanding the funds would not be available until taxes were collected in June and September in 2018.

“If you pass a levy, then you will have to revisit the General Fund to allot enough money to get to July 2018, and then at that point you put it in and moving forward in future budgets there would be a levy fund created and that’s where that money would be to zero out,” County Administrator Mike Doty said. “The ’18 budget we are working on nowm we would have

to adjust down by dividing by 8/12ths just to get to when the revenues come.”

Doty suggested the board create a levy and create a fund balance so that in future years the VAC would come to the budget sessions showing its needs and the board could annually readjust the levy based on the VAC’s remaining fund balance.

“If we pass the Hartman motion (.0174 levy), we would be passing two things,” board ViceChair Darrell Stitzel said.

“The levy for the amount ($60,000) and that the county board will subsidize it for 8 months until the VAC starts getting its disbursement.”

Board member Rodney Fritz warned against establishing a levy, citing the loss of board control over a department.

“I want to point out that

once you set this levy, it will be there forever and we will lose the scrutiny that we’ve always had in the past over the actual budget,” Fritz said. “In the past, it’s been a huge mistake for the County Board not to have a lot of oversight on what was spent in the budget; so once you set it up it’s there forever and when we look at the long-term projection for the number of veterans in the county, the number is declining.

Theoretically, we are here working for all the citizens of the county, and I don’t know that we are doing them a favor in the long run.”

VAC Superintendent William Hanna countered by pointing out the ability the board has in adjusting a levy annually.

“When we come with what we need, the board will be able to adjust up or down every year, so

the board will still have its regulation,” Hanna said.

Board member Cheryl Cole voiced her concerns, citing excessive stipulations mandating dollar amounts and frequency of assistance.

“I don’t agree with putting a levy out, because we’ve only given out like $10,000 or under $10,000 to help the veterans, and they’ve got so many stipulations that they are abusers if they come back for more,” Cole said.

“Well, if you’re going to put $60,000 in there, I think you should help the veterans more and not have all those stipulations. This is all about wages and I think it is ridiculous.”

Hanna said they intend to loosen the stipulations.

“We are going to be loosening the restrictions a little and within the law,” Hanna said. “We’ve

had a board meeting and revisited the stipulations, but this is more than financial assistance. It’s all the other stuff we do getting them their money from their benefits and their disabilities.”

Following the discussion the board voted against both the original motion establishing a .0174 levy and an amendment to that motion establishing a lesser amount.

In other business, the board approved a bid for the county’s five-year Natural Hazard Update and a Class A Liquor License for Riverview Lodge. And, Board Chair Kevin Reibel appointed Kris Bowman to replace Gary Heide on the TriTownship Airport Authority.

The next County Board meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Nov. 2 in the small courtroom of the County Courthouse.

Dairy Queen will present first place winners with a $10 Dairy Queen prize, and second place with a $5 Dairy Queen prize. All participants should be present at noon to pick up their prize coupon.

People without pumpkins can pick up a pumpkin and decorate it at the Mount Carroll Girl Scouts’ booth, and enter it at the chamber tent.

Ag students ride in combines PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF MILLEDGEVILLE – Local farmers let seven students in Milledgeville High School’s agriculture classes ride along in combines Oct. 20.

In a news release, ag teacher Wendy Erbsen said students were able to learn about yield and moiusture monitors, develop an understanding of taking the kernel off the cob, GPS, autosteering, and farmers’ thought processes on when to harvest their crop.

One student came back and said, “It can almost drive itself.”

Students also received information on how the 3- to 4-week harvest period is the only time that a grain farm product helps covers expenses like a $250,000 combine.

On behalf of the Milledgeville Village Board of Trustees, its employees, and myself, I would like to thank all citizens and business for your patience exhibited over the past four summers during the downtown reconstruction project. Dealing with all of the dust and dirt as well as road closures will hopefully have been worth the wait as the project is almost completed.

I would like to thank Bill Brown Construction and all of their employees for the excellent quality of construction that was done in a timely manner. They tried their best to keep the roads open as much as possible and store fronts accessible to all patrons. We are very fortunate to have this outstanding company in our town.

On another subject you may have previously read that the twelve year extension of the Milledgeville Tax Increment Finance was passed and signed into law in Springfield on August 17, 2017. This will bring in an estimated $5,000,000.00 or more dollars. This will run through 2031.

The Milledgeville Village Board of Trustees met on October 2, 2017 to start preliminary discussions on future infrastructure projects involving the use of TIF funds. If anyone has valid ideas on ways to improve our infrastructure please stop by village hall or call a village trustee.

Please keep in mind that when this TIF renewal runs out there will be very little money to maintain our streets, water/sewer lines and other infrastructure.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Pearl City firefighters thank grain tube donors To the editor, Pioneer Hi-Bred feels strongly about serving the communities and farmers right here in northern Illinois.

Through a community investment grant, Pioneer has donated $2,500 to The Pearl City Fire Protection District.

Susan Holmes, Account Manager for Pioneer stated that as a team, the sales representatives in Carroll, Stephenson and Jo Daviess counties decided the investment should fund a grain rescue tube. After several phone calls and much deliberation it was decided that providing Pearl City with the lifesaving equipment would meet a need along with

assisting neighboring communities that are currently without the equipment.

“The farmers in this area work around the clock to meet the world’s demand for food, fuel and fiber. In that pursuit, long hours and physically demanding labor often take its toll. Our hope is that in the event of an unforeseen accident our local fire departments will have the necessary equipment on hand to react quickly and protect our farmers. Nothing is better than educating your families on safety and proper grain handling, but we feel this is a great way to give back to the farmers in Pearl City and the surrounding communities.”

Brent Schneider, the Chief of PCFPD, stated

that he hopes they never need to use this equipment, but if the situation were to arise they want to be prepared. The Great Wall of Rescue grain tube is produced in Lanark by Eastland Fabrication, and is considered to be one of the most effective extraction tools. Stateline Farm & Rescue of Orangeville has already trained many of PCFD’s members.Pearl City Fire plans on scheduling another Stateline Farm and Rescue training session this fall and it will be open to all area departments. Quilts donated to Carroll infants’ pantry PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF MOUNT CARROLL – Pitter Patter Pantry in Mount Carroll recently received six crib quilts created by local women.

In a press release, pantry president Gretchen Wallender said Marilyn Lamoreux of Lanark created the pieced tops, while Jane Smith of Milledgeville did the machine quilting.

The reversible and machinewashable quilts will be available at the pantry, at Shaw’s Express, 848 S. Jackson St. The pantry provides basic nursery necessities for Carroll County families enrolled in the Women, Infants, and Children program at the county health department.

IN BRIEF Economic summit, meeting Saturday MOUNT CARROLL – Blackhawk Hills Regional Council’s fall summit and Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy meeting will be held Saturday at Timber Lake Playhouse, 8215 Black Oak Road.

The strategy committee meets at 7:15 a.m., with summit registration at 8:30 and the summit from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Topics will include an assessment of Illinois business, statewide and local freight economy, job creation, entrepeneurship, economic development, and rural economic trends.

BHRC works to enhance economic growth and workforce development in Carroll, JoDaviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, and Whiteside counties.

New hospice holding open house STERLING – Rock River Hospice & Home is having an open house for its new 14,000-foot facility from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 28 and 29 at 2706 Ave. E. The hospice serves Bureau, Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties.

The new home has six patient suites, a chapel and reflection room, a facility

entirely accessible by people with disabilities, family space with overnight accommodations, respite care, and kitchen and dining service for patients and families.

Elizabeth resident’s book is published ELIZABETH – A retired pastor and former Apple River resident’s introductory textbook on moral philosophy has been published by Dorrance Publishing Co. in Pittsburgh.

The Rev. James L. Breed, Ph.D, wrote “Ethics: An Introduction to the Western Schools of Thought in Moral Philosophy.” The book provides an outline of the main schools, with a brief analysis of each and views of its critics.

Breed now lives in Elizabeth with his wife, Monika.

Registration wanted for spring naturalist class MOUNT CARROLL – University of Illinois Extension will offer Master Naturalist training from 5 to 9 p.m.

The six-week session will cover exploring the natural world, what being a naturalist means, hands-on training, and community-
