Savanna man more than happy to win for losing Vincent takes a top honor at TOPS ceremony

BY PHILLIP HARTMAN Prairie Advocate phartman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5525 SAVANNA – A Savanna man has proved age is just a number where excelling at weight loss is involved.

Warren Vincent, 74, placed second in the world July 17 for weight loss in the 250- to 300-pound international division of the Take Off Pounds Sensibly program. Vincent was recognized at a TOPS gathering at the Statehouse Convention center in Little Rock, Arkansas.

As of Oct. 3, Vincent said he was down to 191.3 pounds – nearly 100 pounds from his heaviest weight. He had started out watching his weight while in the military.

“I was a combat medic in the Navy, serving with the Marines. Then, I worked on subs. I had 11 and a half years active duty,” Vincent said.

Vincent eventually moved to Savanna, working at the former Army Depot as a quality insurance specialist and retiring in 1993 from the Department of Defense.

He still lives in Savanna with his wife, Jean, 69.

In July, Warren Vincent of Savanna was recognized as an International Division Winner for weight loss at a TOPS program in Little Rock, Arkansas. With Vincent is Barbara Cady, TOPS president.

Warren’s weight increased to about 270 pounds about 7 or 8 years ago.

“At 6 foot, that’s too much,” Vincent said.

His weight continued to increase, to the point where he reached 287 pounds and fought COPD. “I went on oxygen 24-7, 3 or 4 years ago,” Vincent said. “Then, I saw an article that Stephenson County Health Department was provided a grant to open a TOPS chapter. I spoke with Jim Debunaer, then Mark Kline. That was Jan. 5, 2016.”

Decreasing his weight didn’t happen overnight.

Vincent cited the example that one week, a participant might begin by watching how much they put on their plate, and only eat that much. Then, they might cut down on how much bread they eat, then how many potatoes they eat, and so on.

“It’s really surprising how that works,” Vincent said.

Extension Educator Martha Ebbesmeier addressed board members, thanking them for their continued support. “4-H is a worthy program, which seeks to provide a learning experience for the whole child, by providing youth a greater sense of belonging, more independence, enhanced generosity, and mastery of a skill in an area of their choosing,�

Riverview Center Crisis Services Coordinator Shawna Bauer spoke to the board on behalf of the center. “The problem of domestic violence affects all citizens of Carroll County, crossing all racial, social, religious, ethnic, geographic, and economic groups,� Bauer said.

She said Riverview Center provided nearly 1,000 hours of direct services to 84 adult survivors and their children, often supplying orders of protection and maintaining hotline connections to victims in Thomson, Savanna, Milledgeville, Shannon, Lanark, Chadwick and all areas within Carroll County. “In recognition of the

impact domestic violence has on the well being of our communities, I invite you all to proclaim October 2017 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month,�

Bauer said.

She also asked that the board and its constituents further recognize the month by wearing purple or a purple ribbon on Oct. 19, in recognition of those who have been affected by domestic violence. “Citizens should take this opportunity to educate themselves about the impact of domestic violence and to become familiar with resources and programs available,�

Bauer said. “This month, let us remember the victims of domestic violence, celebrate the survivors, and work together to eliminate violence from our community.�

“I am comfortable with the fact that I have so much support,� Vincent said.

TOPS has worked so well for Vincent that after he lost his first 86 pounds, he asked his doctor in February if he needed to use oxygen during the day.

The doctor performed

some tests, and found that Vincent could go without needing to do so. “Then, on St. Patrick’s Day, I didn’t need to use extra oxygen at all,� Vincent said.

Access road to industrial park nearly completed STAFF REPORT news@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5501 MILLEDGEVILLE – Work on a 1,500-foot road to improve access to the former Milledgeville Industrial Park should be finished by the end of the month, according to an Illinois Department of Transportation official.

IDOT engineer John Wegmeyer said the road, which costs about $350,000, was split off from a seperate project to widen state Route 40. “Half of it was paid for by economic devel-

opment funds, and half was paid by (Midwestern) BioAg,� Wegmeyer said.

In 2015, BioAg bought the park, which measured about 30.3 acres at the time, Village President Galen Wirth said. “Once they can get a road in there, BioAg wants to sell off lots,�

Wirth said.

Eight lots measuring almost 2 acres each remain at the park, after roadwork and a retention pond reduced the acreage.

BioAg representatives declined to comment on the project.

Facts on Marijuana you need to know:

1 in 10 people who try marijuana will become addicted to it, developing a dependence that produces withdrawal, cravings.

If marijuana use starts in adolescence, the chances of addiction are 1 in 6.1 Today’s marijuana is not the marijuana of the 1960s; potency has tripled in the past 15 years, and according to a 2009 report from the U.S. government, it has grown 5 times since 1960.

Marijuana use directly affects the brain, specifically the parts of the brain responsible for memory, learning, attention, and reaction time. These effects can last up to 28 days after abstinence from the drug.2 Science confirms that the adolescent brain, particularly the part of the brain that regulates the planning complex cognitive behavior, personality expression, decision-making and social behavior, is not fully developed until the early to mid20s. Developing brains are especially susceptible to all of the negative effects of marijuana and other drug use.3

One of the most well designed studies on marijuana and intelligence, released in 2012, found that persistent, heavy use of marijuana by adolescents reduces IQ by as much as eight points, when tested well into adulthood.4

Mental Health 708 Board offers thanks Dear Editor, When the local agencies were struggling with funding, the 708 Mental Health Board decided to help by hosting a fundraising event. With the help of Brooke Byam, Timberlake Playhouse, Compliance Signs, the county banks, savings and loans, and many local businesses, we were able to achieve our goal of bringing quality entertainment to the area through Nashville Live in Carroll County. Musicians donated CDs and their time to bring attention to the cause.

It was a great introduction to Mental Illness Awareness Week (Oct. 1-7), when we fight the stigma that keeps people from getting the help they need.

The Carroll County Mental Health 708 Board is made up of seven members and serves these agencies: Rolling Hills

Progress Center, Sinnissippi Center, CASA, Lutheran Social Services, Tyler’s Justice, The Substance Abuse Coalition of Carroll County and Riverview Center. These advocates promoted within their organizations and volunteered during the event. What wonderful cooperation we have in our county.

Quake safety drills needed, even in Illinois

BY THE SAUK VALLEY MEDIA EDITORIAL BOARD “Stop, drop and roll” is the familiar phrase to remember whenever someone’s clothing catches fire.

That advice has been instilled into many people through fire safety drills.

If you stop moving, drop to the ground, and roll around, you are much more likely to put out the fire and safely survive a perilous situation.

There’s a similar mantra when it comes to surviving an earthquake, according to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

It could be summarized as, “Drop, cover and hold

on.”

As reported by The Associated Press, state officials say if you are ever in an earthquake, you should: 1) Drop onto your hands and knees; 2) Cover your head and neck with one arm, or get under a sturdy desk or table; and 3) Hold on until the shaking stops.

But wait a minute, you might ask.

Earthquake safety drills for Illinoisans?

You bet.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency plans to conduct “The Great ShakeOut” drill at 10:19 a.m. Oct. 19.

Last year, nearly half a million Illinoisans participated. As of Tues-

day, more than 334,000 were registered for this year’s event in categories such as individuals and families, schools, governments, hotels and lodgings, senior facilities, faith-based organizations, animal shelter and service providers, and health care organizations.

Such drills are worthwhile, given the power of earthquakes (consider the recent deadly quakes in Mexico) and the fact that parts of Illinois are at risk from two seismic zones: Wabash Valley and New Madrid.

Pet project, farmer safety and IDOR audits

ell, we got our puppy.

It has been not even a week, and Maggie is completely spoiled. So far, she is quite content curling up on her blanket by the desk here at the office.

For the first few weeks, she is coming with me each day to avoid being crated all day.

These very dry conditions, along with warm weather, make a person nervous about combine fires. While we all worry about the price and expense of the machinery, personal safety is more important. It is pertinent for farmers to keep the combine clean. I know it is hard to take the time to deal with it, but a quick pressure washer spray can make the difference to get rid of the dust and some caked-on residue.

Blowing the leaves, chaff and plant material off the head can also make a big difference. Also, for those times when all precautions don’t matter, be sure your fire extinguisher is up-to-date and ready to use.

The rules are complex, but the basic premise is that equipment must be essential to the production of a crop or essential to the propagation of livestock, and must be primarily used for that purpose. In the audit notice, IDOR asks the purchaser of the equipment a number of questions about how the equipment is being used.

IDOR can go back as far as 6 years in looking at equipment purchases.

“Our running game opened that up,” Kody Plattenberger said. “You have to establish a ground game to set up the pass, or the opposite.”

VARSITY FOOTBALL SCORES OCT. 6 West Carroll 26, EPC 7: The old adage goes that in a rivalry game, you can throw out the records, no matter the recent history. If West Carroll played the underdog role against chief rival Eastland-Pearl City, it sure didn’t look like it on the field Friday.

The Thunder hogged the ball, broke off big runs, and were efficient through the air in a 26-7 victory to spoil homecoming for Eastland and Pearl City.

“There’s a knock on us. People tell us we haven’t beat anybody all the time,” West Carroll coach Matt Leitzen said. “Well, that has to be done now.”

The teams played through a trio of stoppages when a bank of lights went out, and played the rest of the game without it after the third break midway through the third quarter.

Kaleb Hartman ran for only 51 yards on 13 carries, but made crushing hits as a lead blocker for Kaleb Plattenberger to rack up 163 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

out there,” Leitzen said. “Nothing goes unnoticed, and those guys are pretty unselfish patting each other on the back. Coaches notice that. Kaleb Plattenberger found a hole because Kaleb Hartman made a hole. And our line blocked their butts off.”

The Thunder (5-2, 4-2 NUIC Northwest) held EPC twice on short fields, and jumped ahead when QB Kody Plattenberger hit Cory Simpson from 24 yards out with 21 seconds to go in the first quarter. A 37-yard run by

Milledgeville 26, AFC 0: At halftime, any fair-minded football fan would’ve agreed that Milledgeville had no business holding an 8-0 lead over a feisty Ashton-Franklin Center team desperately clinging to thin playoff hopes. But by the end of the game, there was no doubt in the stands or the scoreboard – the Missiles were the better team and had earned the 26-0 victory.

“I felt [AFC] dominated the first half,” said Milledgeville coach Jason Wroble, who has now guided the Missiles (6-1) to their first six-win season in his 9-year tenure. “But we made some big plays when we needed to and were able to take the lead. I’m sure that was demoralizing for them going into halftime.”

AFC (2-5) controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the first half, feeding bruising fullback Adam Hart a steady diet of carries on a 17-play drive that gobbled up 9 minutes of game time over the first and second quarters. The Raiders converted two fourthdowns on the drive, which brought them down to the Missiles’ 10-yard line, but backto-back sacks, including one by Kyle Kendall on fourth-and-goal, ended the threat.

Having taken AFC’s best punch, Milledgeville dabbed its mouth, wiped its brow, and immediately offered a counter-strike, slicing through the Raiders’ defense on a 7-play, 80-yard drive capped by a touchdown pass from Jack Munz to Carson Boyer with 3:50 to go in the second quarter, salvaging the first half for the Missiles.

As Wroble suggested, that turn of events was indeed demoralizing for the Raiders.

It just came down to a lack of execution.”

The play – in which a tight end or a split end runs a deep route up the right seam – has worked several times this year for the Missiles, as defenses collapse in the box to stop an expected running play. Despite the play’s schematic simplicity, solid execution by the players and perfect timing by the coaching staff have combined to make it remarkably effective.

“Teams tend to fall asleep on it when we start to run the football,” Wroble said. “We run the play out of a couple formations, so that helps. We don’t run it very often, but when we do, it’s successful.”

After being outplayed for the first half, the Missiles forced a three-and-out to open the second half, and took a 14-0 lead on a 5-yard TD run by Munz. They forced a fumble on AFC’s first play of the next possession, and converted that into 6 more points with a fourth-down touchdown pass from Munz to Grant Schurman.

Orion 35, Morrison 7: The Mustangs took an early lead on a Reilly Dolan to Tristan Demay 19-yard pass in the first quarter, but Orion scored 35 unanswered points to send Morrison to a road loss.

Cougars running with the big schools

BY CODY CUTTER ccutter@saukvalley.com STERLING – Never mind any size discrepancies when it comes to the Eastland cross country program.

Competing at the Sterling Invitational at Hoover Park on Saturday, the Cougars competed against some schools with enrollments 10 or 20 times larger than the 190 kids who walk the halls at Eastland High School.

Team championships are out of the question for the Cougars, since they don’t field enough runners to account for scoring. Instead, Cougars coach Kim Haverland challenges her runners in two aspects: against themselves, and against the clock.

and Pleasant Valley of LeClaire, Iowa – each of which fielded twice to three times more runners than the Cougars.

“They don’t notice that they are a small team,” Haverland said. “They come out and give it their all every single race. Other boxes have full teams and we don’t, but they know they’re competing against themselves and the clock, and that’s how they run from race to race.”

Eastland also competed at the Rock River Run on the same Hoover Park course 2 weekends prior. On Saturday, Mara Schmeider, a freshman, led the Cougars girls with an 85th-place finish in 22 minutes, 10.3 seconds, an improvement of 1:09.3 from the previous race in Sterling.

Sophomore Stephen Reifsteck finished 48th with a time of 17 minutes, 27.6 seconds, which was a 19-second improvement from the Rock River Run.

“We didn’t have PRs, but we had great races,” Haverland said.

Christian Hamblen and Adri Hensgen also competed Saturday for the Cougars. Hamblen finished in 21:08.9, and Hensgen in 25:29.5 – an improvement of 1:32.5. Eastland will compete in a 1A regional meet Oct. 21 at Centennial Park in Rock Falls.

The Cougars have had two runners advance to the sectional level in the past 3 years. Tyler Dambman qualified in each of the past 2 seasons, and Megan Schmeider qualified 3 years ago.

“We’ve had someone make sectionals in the last couple of years, and I have high hopes this year,” Haverland said. “I have a couple of runners who are doing real well, and that makes me excited for the future, too.”

“Eastland hasn’t had cross country for very long,” Haverland added, “and we’re still building.”

Floodplain building demolition nears in Pearl City PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF

PEARL CITY – Work to tear down homes damaged by July flooding could start as soon as next week.

The Pearl City Council voted Oct. 2 to approve Kleckner Demolition from Stockton demolishing the first five of 22 properties in a 100-year floodplain. The most recent severe flooding took place in late July.

“We applied for a federal grant, but had to wait for the state,” Mayor Robert Knoup said.

Knoup said Kleckner will remove the first five properties starting Oct. 17, with another seven to be bid later in October.

A previous Prairie Advocate story reported Pearl City suffered repetitive structural flood losses in 2002, 2008, 2010, and 2011, when significant flood-

ing occurred on the Pecatonica River that caused extremely high water levels on Yellow Creek, as well as tremendous backwater conditions on the Goldmine Tributary.

Even though not all structures included in the project are mapped into either the Goldmine Tributary or Yellow Creek floodplain, backwater from the river created significant water levels around

by repetitive flooding, and the state of Illinois would provide the remaining 25 percent.

The $2.1 million will fund demolition of 22 structures and clearing of their properties, and reshaping the properties to safe and manageable conditions. Once the state completed a budget, the state funds became available to release so the project could proceed.

Lanark High School Class of 1957 reunites

BY SHARON FOLK YOECKEL Submitted to Prairie Advocate The Lanark High School Class of 1957 recently celebrated its 60th class reunion.

Members and guests gathering on Friday, July 14, at Sharon Warneke Kurth’s home in Pearl City were Jane Bowers, of Rockford; Dave Bowman and Betty, of Weyerhauser, Wisconsin, and Gardner, Kansas; Roger Bremmer and Karen, of Shannon; Kenny Carbaugh and Linda, of Pearl City; Duane Kruse and Doris, of Lanark; Ralfe Lichty and Lucy, of New Bern, North Carolina; Betty Rademaker Roberts and Denny, of Chadwick; Denny Rippy and Alnona, of Leola, Pennsylvania; Janet Traum Hoover, of Sterling; Sharon Warneke Kurth, of Pearl City; and Sharon Folk Yoeckel, of Lanark.

A catered dinner, fellowship, pictures and memorabilia, were shared.

“One-Liners”from the “Fifties” were read; and short unsigned high school memories, filled out by each classmate, were passed out and read

by each other, while trying to figure out who wrote them!

The Friday evening group, joined by Leatrice Lynch Bicksler, of Leaf River, and her guest, Ron Kuntzelman; and Ron Helms and wife, Patty, of Urbandale, Iowa; attended the Lanark, Shannon, Eastland Alumni Banquet at the Masonic Temple in Freeport on Saturday evening, July 15, where they were introduced as one of the honored classes. The following Sunday morning, some of the group shared a breakfast brunch at The Rafters near Lena.

During the weekend, memories were shared of class members who have passed away: James Fulrath, Dennis Lamoreux, Russell Zier, Jr., Mary Ann Morris, Gary Smith, Larry Grove, Allan Zink; John Birchen, Jr., and most recently, Mary Poffenberger Rogers. Mary’s husband, Ken Rogers of Napa, California, Lanark High Class of 1956, joined us at the Alumni Banquet.

Entries wanted for Savanna art show by Oct. 19 PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF SAVANNA – Entries can be submitted by Oct. 19 for Palisades Art League’s 56th annual art show and sale, taking place Oct. 21 and 22 at West Carroll Primary School, 2215 Wacker Road.

Activities will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 21 and noon to 4 p.m.

Oct. 22 in the school cafeteria.

Monetary prizes will be given for amateur and advanced winners in Best of Show selections in both photography and fine art categories. Other competitors will receive ribbons.

League members will choose one of their own to receive the PAL Peer Award. Guests of the show will be able to vote for the People’s Choice Award, for both art and photography.

All artists of any skill may enter. Artwork will be divid-

ed by painting, mixed media, drawing, dimensional works, photography, and computer-generated art at both the amateur and advanced levels.

Young artists’ works will be judged separately.

Entries will be separated by category, including Por-

trait/Figure, Landscapes/ Seascapes, Abstracts, Still Life, Nature and Action.

Final media grouping will be based on the number of works entered and the judges’ discretion.

LOCAL NEWS IN BRIEF ROCKFORD – Foresight Financial Group Inc.’s board chairman, John L. Jeschke, resigned Sept. 30 on his 71st birthday.

Robert W. Stenstrom has become the chairman. Jeschke joined the board in 2000, and served as chairman since 2006. He previously served on the board of directors at State Bank of Davis and Lena State Bank.

Citizens State Bank CEO to retire in April LENA – Citizens State Bank President and CEO Frederick “Fritz” Kuhlmeier will retire in April, after 28 years with the company.

In a press release, CSB announced that Kuhlmeier will continue as president and CEO of First Lena Corp., the bank’s holding company, and will remain on CSB’s board of directors.

Amy Baker, the current chief financial officer at CSB, will succeed Kuhlmeier as president and CEO. She joined CSB in 2002 as its controller, and First Lena as its treasurer.

This year, work from young artists will be judged separately. Their entry fee is $1 per piece, while league members can enter art for $2 per piece, and non-members for $3.

Fees for PAL members will be $2, and non members $3.

Registration for entries must be sent to Palisades Art League, P.O. Box 125, Savanna, IL 61074. All registered artwork will need to

be delivered between 5 and 8 p.m. Oct. 20 to the school.

The judge’s critique will start at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 21 for both photography and fine art. All artists and photographers may attend. Heartland Pet Welfare will have a food concession. A progressive painting will be raffled off this year, along with some other donated prizes. Tickets are $1 each, or $5 for seven, and can be purchased from any league member or at the door.
