Chinese delegation visits Lanark farm Lamoreuxs help them learn more about American ag

BY PHILLIP HARTMAN Prairie Advocate phartman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5525 LANARK – Illinois farmers are sending beef to China for the first time in more than a decade, and a Chinese delegation got a firsthand look at where some of that beef comes from, at a cattle farm near Lanark that’s been in the family for 150 years.

A group of seven visitors from Chinese ministries and universities took a tour of the Lamoreux farm Sept. 26. The delegates were on a 2-week visit to America as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Scientific

Cooperation Program.

“China has almost unlimited potential. There hadn’t been [beef] exports to China because of mad cow disease,” said Lou Lamoreux, 68, a board member of the Illinois Meat Export Federation. He farms with his brother, John, 70.

The Chinese beef market reopened to American imports earlier this year, after an embargo put in place in 2003 was lifted.

Jodi Bucher, president of the Illinois Beef Association, said the first shipment of beef was sent to China on June 14.

“It’s a $2.6 billion-per-year estimated market for the U.S.,” Bucher said of China.

Lamoreux said the only beef imports currently permitted by the Chinese government are liver, tongue, and tripe.

On Sept. 26, the delegation enjoyed a different cut of beef when they sat down to a steak dinner with the family. Liu Zhiyi, 35, a research associate at the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, said, “The steak is very good.”

OBITUARIES JIMMY A. THULEN SAVANNA – Jimmy A. Thulen, 83, of Savanna, passed away Friday, Sept. 29, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society – Mount Carroll.

Jimmy was born Nov. 2, 1933, in Savanna, the son of James and Helen (Plattenberger) Thulen. He attended Savanna schools and graduated high school with the class of 1951. Jimmy joined the Army in 1953, and later joined the Army Reserves before being honorably discharged at the rank of corporal. On Aug. 18, 1963, Jimmy married Dorothy Smith. They celebrated 37 years of marriage before Dorothy’s death in 2001.

Jimmy started his law enforcement career as security officer at the Savanna Army Depot. He later became a police officer in Savanna and Lanark. Jimmy was promoted to the Lanark chief of police. In 1970, Jimmy ran for Carroll County sheriff and won, serving as the sheriff from 1970 to 1986. Jimmy also operated Thulen’s Pub in Savanna for a couple years, until retiring. After retirement, Jimmy continued working as a janitor at the Savanna Army

Depot for many years. He was a member of Savanna VFW Post 2223 and the Mount Carroll American Legion. Jimmy enjoyed cutting wood, hunting, reading and playing cards, especially euchre. He enjoyed helping those in need and would often drive his fellow veterans to appointments in Iowa City. Most of all, Jimmy loved getting together and spending time with his family and friends.

Jimmy will be dearly missed by his children, Joseph Thulen of Savanna, Jason (Vicky) Thulen of Savanna, Patricia (Kevin) Krug of Elizabeth, and Jonathon (Jeannie) Thulen of Morrison; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jack (Jennifer) Thulen of Thomson.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Delores Goss, Betty Thulen, and Harriet Berthoff; and a stepson, Gary Mann.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Savanna Township Cemetery in Savanna.

A memorial fund has been established in Jimmy’s memory.

RUTH D. HARTMAN CHADWICK – Ruth Darline Hartman, 90, of Chadwick, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

Ruth was born Dec. 28, 1926, in Eden Township, Clinton County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Hedwig (Hansen) Hagberg. She attended Clinton, Iowa, schools. She later earned her GED in her 60s from Clinton Community College in Iowa. On Aug. 10, 1947, Ruth married Charles Hartman in Clinton, Iowa.

Ruth worked at the Clinton Garment Factory, and farmed on the family farm in Ideal. She also worked as a supermarket samplerdemonstrator for 9 years.

Ruth was a member of First Lutheran Church in Chadwick. She was known for her leaf-design cookies during Thanksgiving, and enjoyed sewing, bread making, cook-

Ruth was preceded in death by one son, Gary; one son-in-law, Walt Wood; three sisters, Margaret Chase, Wanda Hagberg, and Lois Hagberg; and one brother-in-law, LeRoy Thompson.

The funeral was Monday at First Lutheran Church in Chadwick. Burial was at Lower York Cemetery in Thomson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Lutheran Church, or the American Heart Association.

KATHERINE J. EHNEN RICHLAND, Mo. – Katherine Jo Ehnen, 64, of Richland, left this world on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017, leaving behind a bunch of brokenhearted people.

Katherine Jo was born June 25, 1953, in Freeport, to her parents, David E. Traum and Mary E. (Hose) Lang. She attended school in Lanark and Chadwick. She married David B. Sturtz, and together they had three children. She loved life, her family, and people in general.

She never met a stranger.

Katherine Jo is survived by her husband, Don J. Ehnen of Richland; her children, Candy Jo (Eric) Curran of Shannon, Jeremy (Bonnie) Sturtz of Freeport, and Scott Sturtz of Morrison; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her mother, Mary Lang, and her friend, Jerry Hubble,

STERLING – DeJonge Tax & Accounting recently merged with Naperville-based Quality Back Office, LLC. “They are a family-run business that wants to expand their

footprint in northern Illinois,” Sue DeJonge, owner of the Sterling firm, said in a news release.

Gary Grottke, QBO’s owner, has a home in Lake Carroll. QBO provides financial and administrative services to business owners.

DeJonge’s staff will remain with the firm, and DeJonge will remain at 501 E. Fourth St. in Sterling.

The company was opened in 1992 as the Janice Card Co., and Sue DeJonge helped her mother found the firm. Sue took over full-time in 2009.

Newman grad recognized at Monmouth College

MONMOUTH – Teagan McKenna, a freshman at Monmouth College, was named a Stockdale Fellow at the college.

McKenna is a Newman Central Catholic High School graduate and

the daughter of Trent McKenna and Shelly Crownhart, both of Sterling. Teagan plans to major in biochemistry.

The James and Sybil Stockdale Fellows Program is a 4-year leadership development program at the college.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Local clubs celebrate 4-H Week It’s been said that 4-H is the best-kept secret in Illinois and there’s more than a little truth in that statement. Join us in celebrating National 4-H Week, now through Saturday. We know 4-H is a tremendous success story. We see it in the young people around us – in their growing maturity, poise and self-confidence, as well as in their expanding knowledge of their 4-H projects. Yet, we also know that others in our own communities often are unaware of the wide range of opportunities 4-H is providing to youngsters in their own neighborhoods.

It is a great story that deserves to be told.

The main purpose of 4-H is to provide the opportunity for mental, physical and social growth for young people.

The informal education offered by the program supplements the training received in the home, at school and from other youth organizations.

You can join the 5.6 million youth between the

ages of 5 and 18 who are involved with 4-H every year.

4-H uses hands-on learning. This helps young people learn about many different topics. At the meetings, youth will meet new people, make new friends, do community service and fun activities.

Participants in 4-H also learn how to express their own ideas and how to listen to, understand, and respect what others have to say. Group discussions, activities and formal club meetings provide members with the opportunity to practice democratic group action, and to become aware of group dynamics.

4-H also encourages family involvement whenever possible. 4-H can help family members communicate better, help families work toward a common goal, help families develop a feeling of unity, and provide opportunities to discuss goal setting, decision making, and service to others.

4-H is for all youth 8 to 18 years old by Sept 1 of the current year. Youth

5 to 7 years old by Sept.

1 can join a Cloverbud club. Youth can also join SPIN 4-H clubs, which focus on one project area.

Currently, we have SPIN 4-H Clubs for archery, shotgun, air rifle, dog obedience, drill team, and quilting.

Go to 4-H “Citizenship Washington Focus” or National 4-H Conference.

Learn to care for and make decisions about the environment. Meet kids from across the county.

Participate in project workshops and programs that interest you. Discover how our government works. Learn to speak before a group. Have lots of FUN in 4-H! All this and more is possible in 4-H. 4-H Ambassadors talk about experiences

kids when asked about 4-H, they don’t know what it is. It’s an organization that helps you get involved in your community. You learn about community service. You also get to take on projects to show at fair. You develop your skills of responsibility and leadership.

I’ve taken on lots of roles to develop my leadership, responsibility, and confidence. I’ve gained skills such as public speaking. There are so many things you can do in 4-H. One of my interests

have always been animals. Through 4-H, I’ve been able to show many different kinds of animals, including dairy, horses, sheep and goats. I enjoy showing animals as they have always been a passion and interest to me. I always enjoy talking to the judges to learn how to improve things. Judges have helped me go from the bottom of the class to the top just by listening to their advice.

I’m a senior in high school at West Carroll. I’ve been involved in the 4-H for 12 years now, learning many new things each year.

Recently, Stephenson County Crime Stop donated 17 exterior body armor carriers which will allow nonuniform F.P.D. personnel to have access to a body armor set-up that can be put on quickly when needed.

Savanna Rotarians mark 96 years PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF SAVANNA – The Rotary Club of Savanna recently celebrated its 96th year with a birthday cake at Manny’s Pizza and a visit by Rotary District 6420 governor elect Kathy Kwiat-Hess.

“Decade by decade, we’ve managed to do tremendous good in Savanna and in Carroll County. We’ve made a really big difference in helping people and improving the quality of life in the area,” said Savanna club President Bryan McCaskey.

The club was founded in 1921. Some local accomplishments include: • A total of 93 Rotary scholarships awarded

to local high school students. Three scholarships are handed out each year, two for $1,000 and one for $2,000. Upcoming fundraisers include a raffle at the end of this year, and a fish fry in the spring, with a goal to raise at least $3,500.

• Helping bring three SMART LightRaise interactive projectors to West Carroll Middle School, and replacing chalk and blackboards.

• 40 Vocational Service Above Self Awards given out since 1989, recognizing local residents who have an outstanding record of community service.

• Support for the Savanna Food Pantry and the Great River Outreach.

Jumping in and landing on common ground Sterling’s Padilla announces bid for House – ‘I’m not a politician’

BY PAM EGGEMEIER Prairie Advocate peggemeier@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5570 STERLING – Democrat Joan Padilla announced her candidacy for 71st District state representative Thursday at Propheter Park, next to a statue of the nation’s first Republican president.

For Padilla, the executive director at Home of Hope Cancer Wellness Center in Dixon, the setting was perfect.

“Partisan labels break down the lines of communication, and that’s a big part of why nothing is getting done in Springfield,” Padilla said, a statue of Abraham Lincoln looking over her shoulder.

“Everyone has to be willing to sit down, talk and find common ground.”

Her main reason for choosing the park, however, had nothing to do with politics.

“My husband and I bought our first house a block away from the park, and I have so many wonderful memories of our kids playing here.”

Padilla, 53, told an enthusiastic group of about 60 supporters that government in Springfield and Washington has bred much mistrust that challenges everyone running for public office in Illinois.

“Politician” is another label that she tries to distance herself from.

“I am not a politician – I am a wife, mother, sister and friend who loves her community and wants to

help the people in it.”

Padilla’s first foray into politics came 5 years ago, when she made an unsuccessful run for Whiteside County recorder. As the leader of a nonprofit social services organization, state government’s dysfunction has moved her to action.

“The budget impasse had a huge impact on social services safety nets and education,” Padilla said. “I’ve served my community, and this is the next step – it’s time for me to jump in and make a difference.

Padilla believes voters are hungry for candidates who can bring a fresh message, regardless of party.

“Nothing is getting done in Springfield, and people are scratching their heads and wondering what should be done,” Padilla said. “We need fresh eyes in there, and I feel a wave of excitement building in the Democratic process.”

With her family by her side, the mother of four said she is still finetuning her platform, but housing, education and job creation will be prominently featured.

“We want to keep people in our community, and to do that, you have to provide stability and opportunity, and that means great schools, job opportunities and affordable housing,” Padilla said.

he’s encouraged by the number of Democrats jumping into the fray.

“I feel good about all of the candidates who are running,” said Jacobs, who first served on the committee in 1999.

With parties at the state and national levels strategically targeting certain races and throwing a high percentage of the cash in those directions, more candidates are counting on a grass-

roots approach to gain voters’ attention.

When facing incumbents with party support, candidates look to the local party leadership to help them connect with their constituency. They help set up town halls and other events that can create buzz locally and put them on the radar for party money.

Padilla is the third Democrat to announce in the 71st District, following Sean Sanders of Rock Falls and Joe Bright, an Erie native who now lives in Sterling.

The Democrats will face off in the March 20 primary for a shot at the seat held by Savanna Republican Tony McCombie. It’s widely assumed that McCombie will run again, but she hasn’t formally announced her intentions.

Bringing in a dog to ratchet up the insanity!

T

he definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

This is my life in a nutshell.

I continue to get busier and busier, and then wonder why I have no time. Well, it is due to the fact that I am an overachiever and can’t say no. I was cleaning files the other day and came across some old calendars which held my schedule. I have not lightened my load in years, and I have survived, so I may as well keep going.

Recently, this is applying to home life. While the boys all feel I am an animal hater since I have not wanted a dog for years, that isn’t the case. I grew up having dogs and cats, showing steers, jumping in with the hogs or the bull. I had no fear of animals and loved to be with them. However, knowing how much time it takes to care for a pet, I have been hesitant. Four years ago, we got two kittens who are now cats, and while they weren’t for me, they have become mine. I have also come to understand the “crazy cat lady” saying. At times, after a long, stressful day, if the cats aren’t being naughty, they are kind of relaxing. I have spared you the details, though, of their psycho craziness!

So, jump forward to now – we are adopting a puppy. A batch of shepherd mix puppies were dropped off at a shelter and I caved. One visit, and that was all it took. While I know they all would have found good homes, I still caved. So here we start the onset of life with

IN BRIEF Trap permits, tags now available near Savanna SAVANNA – Trapping permits and trap tags for the 2017-2018 furbearer trapping season on the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge can be purchased at the Savanna district office.

The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, at 7071 Riverview Road, Thomson. Each trapper will receive 40 tags with their permit. Trappers must get the tags in person, and have a valid 2017-2018 state trapping license and habitat stamp with them.

Wisconsin residents must provide printed proof of trapping privileges when they apply. Refuge employees cannot access to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources electronic system to check privileges with a conservation card or driver’s license.

All traps placed on the refuge must have a tag attached. Refuge trapping permits are $30 for those 18 and older, and $5 for those under 18. Only cash and checks will be accepted.

Trappers who did not return their fur catch report for the 2016-2017 season will not be issued a new trapping permit.

“My team did a good job getting me in position to kick a field goal,” Lentz said.

“Without them, we wouldn’t have been in that position.”

West Carroll (4-2, 3-2 NUIC Northwest) gained an 8-7 lead with 8:20 remaining in the game after senior quarterback Kody Plattenberger connected with twin brother Kaleb on a straight-down-the-middle pass for a 39-yard touchdown. It was successful, and three plays later, Taylor scored again, capping a wild turnaround from what had been a frustrating game for the homecoming-celebrating Marcos.

“I think it was just frustration,” Taylor said of the shove. “They knew they could play with us, and it was just frustration boiling over.”

For his part, Taylor seemed genuinely more impressed than upset with the Wildcats, who entered the season having won just two games combined over the past two 2017

“That’s a team that’s going to do some stuff later on.”

The Marcos trailed 8-7 at halftime, and it wasn’t a fluke. On the contrary, Polo was lucky to be trailing by just a point. With less than 5 minutes to go in the first half, the Marcos had run just seven plays compared to 32 for River Ridge. Nothing was working for Polo until it orchestrated a seven-play, 55-yard scoring drive just before halftime.

“They played better than us the entire first half,” Polo coach Jeff Bumstead said.

“We went over all week long the stuff they were going to do. It was lack of effort on our part, not lack of preparation.”

The third quarter was a much different story. Following the madness that surrounded Taylor’s two scores, Marcos defensive lineman Nathan Pratt busted the game wide open by intercepting a River Ridge pass and hustling 30 yards untouched for a touchdown to give the game its final score.

Sterling Newman 55, Bureau Valley 6: Newman scored on its first five drives, then added three more second-half touchdowns in a win over Bureau Valley on Friday at Roscoe Eades Stadium. The Comets (6-0, 3-0 Three Rivers Rock) had two first-quarter touchdowns from Cade Gorzny to cap an 11-play, 79-yard drive and a six-play, 45-yard drive.

After Easton Bianchi set the Comets up at the Bureau Valley 4 with an interception and return, Chase Graham scored on the next play. Bianchi rushed nine times for 143 yards in the game, Luke Olson rushed nine times for 112 yards, and Gorzny carried 12 times for 81 yards.

Bureau Valley quarterback Tyler Gustafson completed 14 of his 30 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown, but also was intercepted three times and sacked three times. Drew Ackman dropped Gustafson for a 17-yard loss on one of those sacks, contributing to the Storm losing yardage on their second drive of the game.

The Storm (4-2, 1-1, TRAC Rock) got the ball moving on their fourth drive, with the big play coming when Gustafson scrambled and hit Kale Barnett for a 61-yard gain to the Newman 2.

“The defensive line kind of got to me, so I had make my own play,” Gustafson said.

“I was scrambling and I saw [Barnett] go a little deeper, and I just threw the ball up to him and he got it.”

Gustafson capped off the drive with a touchdown pass to Kosuke Kurokawa. BV got the ball to the Comets’ 1 later in the second quarter with a pair of Gustafson passes to Nate Paul, but Newman’s Nick Eddinger intercepted Gustafson’s next pass at the goal line.

While Bureau Valley passed the ball well, the run game was entirely bottled up. Of BV’s 24 rushing plays, only 10 got positive yardage.

“They have gargoyles,” Bureau Valley coach Joe Schmitt said of the Newman defensive line. “They were coming downhill and being extremely physical. Coach [Mike] Papoccia does an excellent job preparing.

We tried to run some option football with the heavy set, but up front they are excellent, and their second level is excellent.”

Bianchi ran up the middle, then outran the BV defense down the left sideline for a 65-yard TD to open the second half, and when Olson scored another touchdown later in the third, it was Newman’s third one-play scoring drive of the game.

Orion 42, Fulton 0: The Chargers took advantage of some absences from key Steamers and a second-quarter injury to Austin Schroeder to roll Fulton on its home field. Fire closes Savanna auto shop – for a day STAFF REPORT news@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5501 SAVANNA – A gas tank repair sparked a fire at Midwest Motors that shut the business down for the day.

The fire began shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday in the repair shop at the dealership at 723 Viaduct Road; it was out by about 10:35 a.m., the Savanna Fire department said in a release.

No one was injured, but the shop sustained extensive damage, and the car, a 1990 Chevy Lumina, was a total loss, the release said.

By Friday, it was business as usual at Midwest Motors, with “some work to do” on restoring the building, the business said on its Facebook page.

“We had quite a scare yesterday and almost lost the place due to fire,” the Facebook posting read.

“The sales office and body shop both were relatively unaffected (AMAZING) but our service center got a little crispy. Everybody is OK, and the calls, texts, and concerns were all appreciated!”

The business specifically thanked the work of first responders.

“The Savanna FD deserves special mention for the incredible response time and ability to get the fire contained that allowed us to continue to have a building to work in today. Thanks again and awesome job, it is truly appreciated!

Sterling man accused of beating DFCS employee STAFF REPORT news@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5501 MOUNT CARROLL – A 25-yearold Sterling man was in Carroll County Jail on Sunday, accused of beating a 59-year-old Department of Children and Family Services worker so badly Friday that she was flown to OSF St. Anthony in Rockford for treatment.

Andrew J. Sucher was out of jail on $15,000 bond, facing aggravated battery of a child, which carries 2 to 5 years in prison, and misdemeanor battery, domestic battery and interfering with the reporting of a domestic battery in a Whiteside County case when he was arrested Friday in Dixon.

He is charged with aggravated battery in the Carroll County case and is being held on $200,000 bond; that charge carries 4 to 15 years.

The woman came Andrew J. to a home in MilledSucher geville to check on the welfare of Sucher’s child, where he assaulted her, then fled, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

He was arrested in Dixon at 11:45 p.m. Friday, Dixon police said in a news release.

where everyone can be themselves and succeed while doing it. My name is Natalie Wilkinson and I have been in 4-H for 10 years. This is my second year as a Carroll County Ambassador and I couldn’t be more grateful for all of the opportunities that the 4-H program has given me.

I used to be the shy little girl that just sat back and watched everything, now I am able to speak confidently in front of large groups people and can even run a meeting by myself. I have also met so many friends along the way. We all work together to help each other grow and accomplish lots of great things.

The 4-H program is a place where everyone can fit in while being themselves. There are so many project areas to choose from, that everyone can find what they are interested in and excel at it.

Once you join a club, you join a family that will rally around you so that you can succeed. So, I encourage any young person to take that step and join 4-H. You will meet so many people, learn so many skills, and build so much character along the way!

I am learning to sew and made a skirt last year.

I wore it to school and received a lot of compliments on it. I am learning to ride a horse and to show. I have also taken leadership and am learning to be a better leader for school as well as 4-H. Being in 4-H is not just doing projects. It is having fun. We do different parties and the 4-H Federation tries to do fun things for all clubs to join in on. This year they are going to try and go to a trampoline park and they will make spring cards with the residents at Good Samaritan Nursing Home. The three legislators offered the following statement: “This tragic attack highlights the dangers faced by our child welfare officers every day and the profound need to continue to educate communities on eliminating violence, especially domestic violence. Along with our fellow legislators, we offer our prayers to the family of the DCFS Investigator, as well as to her co-workers and fellow employees who are saving lives in Illinois’ child welfare system every day. This is terribly frightening and traumatizing for all of our hardworking Child Protective Investigators, but this incident shows how important their work is in protecting children from violence and harm.”

Flu shot clinics planned across area PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF

FREEPORT – FHN Memorial Hospital will have flu shot clinics this fall and into early December at area sites.

Adults under 65 will receive a vaccine that protects against four influenza strains, for $28. Adults over 65 will receive a high-dose version of the vaccine for $62.

Children can only be immunized to if a written prescription from a physician indicating dosage is presented. Federal guidelines require everyone to present a photo ID to receive an immunization.

There will be no out-of-pocket expense if recipients are covered

by Medicare Part B or a Medicare HMO accepted by FHN. Lists of accepted HMOs will be at each site. Medicare recipients must present their Medicare card, or Medicare HMO card instead of the Medicare card. Immunizations may be paid for with cash or check payable to FHN. The prices are only at available at the clinics listed below, with other rates possibly applying at FHN offices.

No other insurance or Medicaid cards can be accepted.

Flu shots for FHN patients in Lanark LANARK – Flu immunizations for current FHN Family Healthcare Center patients are available this week at the Lanark office, 602 W. Olympic Drive.

Shot times are from 8 a.m. to noon today through Friday, with additional sessions from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Federal guidelines require that everyone present a photo ID to receive an immunization. People with allergies to eggs or the flu vaccine, those with an illness accompanied by a fever, or with a depressed immune system should talk to their health provider about the immunizations.

The farm has between 700 to 1,000 head cattle, mainly Angus, and another 200 cows with calves.

Lou’s son, Nathan, and John’s son, Dan, both 34, also help with the 5-generation family farm, which was started in 1867.

“Our families, together, have about 900 acres.

We rent about that much more. We also have corn, soybeans, and hay,” Lou Lamoreux said.

Professor Zhu Jing, 48, dean of the College of Economic Management at Nanjing Agricultural University, spoke with Dan Lamoreux about the cattle operations, certification for farmers, and the differences between farming in China and America.

Preventing

underage drinking is as easy as 1-2-3 1

BONDING

Developing a strong relationship with your child is important.

Research shows that family conflict and a weak parent/child bond increases a child’s risk of drinking underage.

Bonding can be as simple as going out and having fun together, talking about school, and making time each day to listen to your child’s concerns. Studies show that even making the effort to eat dinner as a family five times each week reduces the chance that a child will use alcohol or drugs by as much as 33 percent.

BOUNDARIES

Parental disapproval is the number one reason why teens say they don’t drink. When parents set clear rules about not using alcohol, kids usually follow them.

It’s important, however, that your kids know why you don’t want them to drink.

Explain how underage alcohol use can change how their adolescent brains develop—imparing memory and learning capabilities while increasing their risk of addiction. Also, make sure to establish consequences for breaking the rules, and consistently enforce them.

3 Start early and stay involved.

Like many parenting skills, monitoring your children’s online activities is easiest when you establish policies and expectations early.

Although the tendency is for parents to become less involved as their children age, even older teens need their parents’ help to stay alcohol-free.

MONITORING

Having friends who drink is the single greatest risk factor for underage alcohol use. As a parent, it’s imperative that you know whom your child is with, where they are, and what they’re doing.

Make it a habit to ask questions as your child leaves the house. Get to know his or her friends, and ensure that alcohol isn’t available to them at your house or their friends’ homes. Checking in with your child can be as easy as sending a text message, and if alcohol shows up at a party or event, being ready to pick your child up.

Don’t forget to monitor your child’s online activities, too. Today, teens spend more time interacting with each other on social media sites like Facebook than they do talking on the telephone.
