Three lucky ladies in Mount Carroll received a surprise visit from the Sauk Valley chapter of “Pink Heals” recently. Leading the caravan was a Mount Carroll Police squad car, a pink firetruck, and numerous fire trucks and members of the Mount Carroll

Fire Department.

Margie Pociecha, Mary Rapp, and Susie Meador were all greeted with hugs from police, firefighters, and the Pink Heals crew. Each was given a gift basket loaded with pampering goodies donated by the group, had a chance to share their stories, and sign their name to the pink truck.

“It was a most awesome moment” Meador said, also noting that it was great to see the community involvement. Meador is a longtime employee of Shaw’s Markeplace, and was working at the time of the surprise. Members of the city’s fire department learned of the visit from the guys in pink on very short notice, so it

was a surprise for many in town.

Pink Heals Sauk Valley was formed in December. “Leslie” the firetruck is named in memory of Leslie Ann Hulse, who was a 10-year veteran of the Fishers Police Department as well as a member of the Emergency Response Team who died of breast cancer in 2009. The tour operates

through the sale of merchandise, gifts, and local sponsorships which allow the group to pay for gas, maintain vehicles, and tour across the country to visit individuals and share the program.

Yoeckel was elected in April, and works as both the city clerk and the utility clerk.

Among concerns were that Yoeckel had not been making bank deposits at appropriate times, had not been picking up mail, and had not completed training on Quickbooks accounting software.

At the Aug. 15 meeting, Yoeckel said she has completed the Quickbooks training.

“I’ve also been making deposits, and checking the (City Hall) dropbox, at least once a day, sometimes twice,” she said. “If I get them before 2 p.m., I get them into the computer and to the bank.”

Yoeckel said she’d missed picking up mail from the

post office on only 2 days, one of which was was due to illness.

“I’ve also been working lunches, and putting up a sign if I’m in the bathroom or I’m at the bank, telling people I’m out and I’ll return,” she said.

Grim told Yoeckel to keep doing what she’s been doing.

have been working to determine who owes what for about $84,000 in unpaid water bills found in a cabinet drawer in late April. Former City Clerk Jackie Hawbecker has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

Hawbecker also assisted Mayor Ken Viglietta in finding paperwork requested by the Internal Revenue Service for an audit.

At the Aug. 1 meeting, Viglietta told the council that Lanark received an audit notice from the IRS for records for 2014.

“They’re basically saying the total of the Form 941-As doesn’t equal what they were for W-2s. We found nothing in the file,” Viglietta said on Aug. 13.

SHANNON – Eastland Elementary School students didn’t have to miss the sun Monday.

Despite intermittent clouds, classes at Eastland were able to step outside and view the solar eclipse through special glasses. A live feed from NASA could be viewed in the cafeteria, but the school had been preparing to watch the eclipse outside.

“We’ve got all of our glasses,” Principal Angela Mahoney said.

Right about 12:55 p.m., sunlight could be seen streaming into a cafeteria window, already starting to grow unusually dim for midafternoon as the moon dipped in front of the sun. The bell rang, and kids cheered as their teachers lined them up to head outside for the viewing of the first full-blown solar eclipse to sweep the U.S. from coast to coast in nearly a century.

Kindergartners through sixth-graders went outside to view the eclipse, oohing and aahing as the clouds moved away from the sun, and the moon slowly reduced the solar disk to a sliver. Total darkness never fell, but the sunlight did grow thin.

Finally, about 1:18 p.m., the sun started to return, and the students headed back indoors by about 1:25 p.m.

“I talked to Jackie. It’s not terribly unusual for the IRS to send letters for something that was already taken care of. We found the 941-As for 2014,” Mitchell said.

Jenica Stoner, 11, of Lanark, said it was cool how the eclipse went so quickly.

Brecken Hayden, 8, of Lake Carroll also said he thought the eclipse was cool.

“Maybe,” he said when asked if he might go into astronomy.

Mitchell said the recalculated figures came out exactly right, but the Form W-2s for 2014 couldn’t’ be found.

“I’ll call the accounting firm. We can order old tax returns from the IRS, but I’ve never ordered old W-2s,” Mitchell said.

Obituaries William J. Poirier

LAKE CARROLL – William James Poirier, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017. He was surrounded by family at his daughter Nancy’s home in Lake Carroll, as he was lifted to heaven with the hymn, “Blessed Assurance.”

Bill was born Aug. 27, 1935, in Worcester, Massachusetts. At the age of 17, he joined the Navy and was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois. It was at a roller skating rink in Waukegan where he met the love of his life, Dolores Jeanine Witte. While his flashy skills on roller skates and confident approach didn’t impress her at first, his charm won her over. They wrote many letters while he was at sea on his LST 1164, Walworth County, and he even proposed and sent her an engagement ring via the U.S. mail. Dee said yes, and they began their union of 61 years on Sept. 8, 1956. Together, they lived in California, Illinois, Ohio, and Florida and raised 3 children and doted over nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Bill instilled in all of his children and grandchildren his strong work ethic, his sense of humor, and his love and devotion to family.

There was nothing better for Bill than to have family together for a favorite game of cards or possibly try a brand-new game that he would quickly master. Bill was an avid golfer, and at the age of 80, he finally realized his dream of hitting a hole in one. His other favorite pastime was fishing, which he loved to share with his grandchildren. Bill didn’t have many stories about the one that got away, because not that many got away from him.

In his career, Bill established himself as an expert on fire extinguishers and testing those extinguishers at Underwriters’ Laboratories in Northbrook. It was well known that if Bill couldn’t put out a fire, no one could.

In 1975, he founded his own consulting business, Poirier Enterprises, which he successfully retired from in 1997 at the age of 62. Bill and Dee were happy snowbirds, spending winters in Florida and summers in Illinois, where he could pursue fishing and golfing year-round.

They loved to visit favorite campgrounds when they traveled back and forth.

No campground, though, was better than Indian Trails, where the entire family would traditionally gather for a week in August. When he wasn’t fishing, golfing or camping, he made his famous “Bill’s Bottle Fish,” which he would sell and very often give away the first one to an admirer. Bill had much to be proud of.

He is survived by his

dear wife, Dolores Jeanine (neé Witte); three children, Cynthia (Spark) Ball, William E. (Chrissy) Poirier, and Nancy (Bill) McCormick; nine grandchildren, Chantal (Kosimo Donofio), Erin (Austin) Allen, Jamie (Alex Lazzara) McCormick, Daniel McCormick, Renee (Brandon) Gensemer, Carl Ball, Mitch Poirier, Rachel Ricchio, and Joseph Ricchio; and four greatgrandchildren, Luca, Sarah and Ben Poirier, and Liam Allen. He also is survived by his brothers, Leo and Bobby Forget and Donnie Ouellette.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Olive Forget; his father, Ed Hakala; his brother Armand Forget; and his father- and motherin-law, Wally and Eleanor Witte.

William James Poirier had a life that was well-lived, and he left a legacy of love and family that will be a part of us always.

An open house to celebrate Bill’s life was Sunday at Spark and Cindy’s house in Gurnee.

Kyle J. Faust

LANARK – Kyle James Faust, 26, of Lanark, died by suicide Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, after he lost his battle with depression.

He was born Aug. 4, 1991, the son of Randy and Sandy Faust and Lori (Bleile) Faust. He graduated from Eastland High School with the class of 2010 and was attending Highland Community College, studying to become a physical therapist.

Kyle was a combat veteran who served in the Army, 10th Mountain Division Artillery and had served in Afghanistan.

He loved nature, hiking with friends and cousins, and photography. He also was an avid reader, and especially enjoyed philosophy. Kyle was known for his generosity, smile, and contagious laughter.

He is survived by his parents, Randy and Sandy Faust of Pearl City; siblings, Melissa (Michael) Medler of Shannon, Joseph (Linh) Theriault of Oceanside, California, and Venessa (Kale) Wahler of Mountlake Terrace, Washington; nieces, Kensley Bashaw, Ellie Theriault, and Adelaide Wahler; grandmothers, Mary Bleile, Bernita Kramer Faust, and Twila Simler; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Nancy L. Matthews

CHADWICK – Nancy Lou Matthews, 75, of Chadwick, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

Nancy was born Oct. 13, 1941, in Livingston, Wisconsin, to Lester and Vera (Davenport) Reger. She married James Matthews on Sept. 25, 1959, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua, Iowa.

She enjoyed working in her flower gardens and bird watching, especially hummingbirds and orioles. Nancy was the salutatorian of her class, graduating in 1959 from Cobb High School in Cobb, Wisconsin. She was the owner of J & N Dipworm, and enjoyed fishing for catfish in the Mississippi and Rock rivers with Jim. Nancy adored her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

FULTON – Apparently, zombies and mud don’t mix.

The second Zombie Crawl at Heritage Canyon, set for Sept. 16, has been canceled because of flood debris from a July 22 storm.

Some areas of the lower canyon have about 3 feet of mud and are taking a long time to finish drying before workers can clear them out, organizer Kyle Kopf wrote in an e-mail.

The Zombie Crawl committee hopes to host the event in 2018.

ummer events are now in the books! The fair is over, peaches have been picked up, it is time to sit down and write up all the reports on the activities we have done for the past year.

We have a group of older members, ages 65 and up who have been meeting for many moons. They are called the 4C’s and they are our primetimers.They meet once a month for a speaker, tour, or game night and a social event. Their next meeting is on Friday, Sept. 8.

Contact our office for more information on the group, as they are always looking for new members. They meet in the evening at 6:30.

If you were interested in the trips we are offering up with Tri-State Travel and other county farm bureaus and missed the meeting, we have all the flyers here at the office.The trip schedule is San Antonio in March of 2018; Northwoods for August 2018; and Iceland in September 2018. A variety of trips to meet everyone’s needs for a quick getaway.

Small-school football teams have to make do with the cards dealt to them, and the Milledgeville Missiles were dealt very few this summer. For ninth-year coach Jason Wroble, however, it’s a situation he’s been through before in certain years.

After 1 week of practices, there’s not too much of a lag for the Missiles, who have just 28 players in the entire program, which includes only two seniors. “We don’t have a ton of numbers, but I’m really happy with our work ethic,�

Wroble said. “Our focus is picking up. I feel like at this point of the season, we’re farther ahead of where we were last year. Part of that is having more reps, but at this part of the season we’re in good shape, and just got to now do it physically on the field.�

Injuries are the big fear on teams with small numbers, and the Missiles are trying to do whatever they can to keep players from taking on too many duties. Lineman Kyle Kendall is one of the two seniors, along with tight end and defensive lineman Dylan Janssen. As co-dean of the team, keeping an eye on the younger players becomes much more of a responsibility. During practice Monday morning, one of the Missiles found himself being hounded by Kendall for “being a little slow.� “Constructive criticism is what I like to call it,�

Kendall said. “You just get on them, but let them know that it’s for the benefit of the team. You’re not picking on them, but you’re trying to make everybody better.

If everybody’s going 100 percent at practice, it makes everybody better. “You just got to encourage them.�

The Missiles ran out of the Wing-T on more than 80 percent of their offensive plays last season, with graduated running back Kyle Forbes (150 carries, 850 yards, 8 TDs) toting much of the load. Fellow graduates Buddy Bibler and quarterback Brexton Flynn both had more than 70 carries last year. Most of the carries will now fall on juniors Nate Rahn (54-368, 2 TDs) and Carson Boyer (79-374, 4 TDs). “Our football intelligence is going to be pretty strong as a team,� Wroble said. “Even though we’re not deep as a team, we have

What parents may not realize is that children say parental disapproval of underage drinking is the key reason they have chosen not to drink.

It can actually cause serious damage to the still-developing adolescent brain (10-21 years).

Alcohol use may impair memory, learning, decision making and impulse control; and it greatly increases the risk of addiction. In addition, alcohol use can cause young people to develop social problems, have poor judgment, get into trouble, do poorly in school and experience failure in achieving lifelong goals.

To compound this problem, research shows that parents generally underestimate the extent of teen drinking and its negative consequences. Thirty one percent of youths who said they had been drunk in the past year were said by their parents to be nondrinkers. Others may view underage drinking as inevitable, but it isn’t. To be alcohol free, a teen needs parents who are trained in BONDING (creating a warm, loving relationship), setting BOUNDARIES (clear,

LANARK — The Eastland-Pearl City football team brings back a young squad this fall.

Last year’s Wildcatz had Keegan Schubert leading the way in the rushing attack, while Brighton Haverland split time between tight end and quarterback. Now, both have graduated, so EPC has to find a way to replace Schubert’s 1,107 yards – fourth most of any rusher in the area last year.

The Wildcatz also want to prove that the team has enough weapons to overcome that loss, even as they keep hearing people tell them how much that loss will hurt.

“It’s been a lot of work in the offseason to tell them they’re wrong, and you can put your own name out there,” Jarod Kempel said. “[We] just work hard and prove ourselves.”

EPC will be a multiple-set team with multiple people handling the rushing attack.

Junior twin brothers Jarod and Jayden Kempel provide the speed, while sophomore fullback Brayden Heeren will run with power.

“Brayden Heeren got the nickname last year, ‘The Closer,’ and he would just finish things,” EPC coach Randy Asche said. “We would run our sophomore backs at the fresh-soph level for most of the game, and in the second half, we would bring him in and he would just finish things.”

Asche hopes Heeren is the runner he can count on to end games when the Wildcatz are ahead, punishing opposing defenses by charging straight ahead to get first downs late in games, helping EPC run down the clock.

Meanwhile, Asche expects to see growth in both Kempel brothers this season, hoping to see them hit holes directly.

The Eastland-Pearl City Wildcatz will be looking to twin brothers Jayden (left) and Jarod Kempel to help fill the rushing void left by the graduation of Keegan Schubert, who gained 1,107 yards last year. The juniors will provide the speed, while sophomore fullback Brayden Heeren will supply the power.

“When they were young and in junior high, they did a lot of jail break stuff because they were fast,” Asche said. “As you get older, the window narrows.

Just looking at becoming better football players, sticking the foot in the window, getting vertical.”

Jayden Kempel carried 92 times last season for 551 yards. Jarod Kempel carried 49 times for 342 yards.

Coming off of that season, Jayden said he is looking to “just be a leader and be the guy that people can look to.”

“We are a lot more balanced than we were last year, have a lot more depth, I think,” Jarod Kempel said. “We can play multiple positions.”

Both Kempels were used in the passing game last year, and both had nine receptions. Jarod had a slight edge in receiving yards, 75-63.

compete with each other in everything, from lifting weights to running 40-yard dashes. Which brother comes out ahead varries from day to day.

“We push each other hard, and we push each other to get better,” Jarod said.

Jayden is the older brother by about 1 minute, and in the 16 years since, most competitions between the two have been neck-andneck.

“It’s nice because you know you always have someone to push you,” Jayden said. “It’s always competitive between us two.

When we go home, it’s a competition to see who did better each night.”

On defense, the Wildcatz graduated three seniors and may have to deviate from the typical 3-4 they have used in the past while they look for newcomers to step up.

“We’re not quite finding thepersonnel that we need, so we’re going to be more multiple sets,” Asche said. “… It’s a work in progress.

We work every day on tackling circuit. I think we need to improve as tacklers.

But as we put them in team, they seem to run well.”

Kaleb and Kody Plattenberger hope to power West Carroll to winning season

SAVANNA – After 3 years of coaching Kaleb and Kody Plattenberger, one would think West Carroll football coach Matt Leitzen can tell the identical twin seniors apart.

During a summer weight room session, the Plattenberger twins – freshly shaven after senior pictures – stood side by side in front of their coach. Telling them apart became a real challenge, and what makes it even more challenging is that the twins are almost always together.

“We’ve just got a lot of chemistry,” Kody said. “We

hang out all of the time, and we just know what we’re looking for in each other.”

“We kind of know what each other’s thinking,” Kaleb added, “and we can cue each other on stuff.”

Having siblings on a team is one thing, but identical twins with mostly similar mindsets and thought processes is another – and an advantage the Thunder look to utilize this season, which kicks off at 7:30 Friday night at Lena-Winslow.

experience at wide receiver.

After connecting for a single 54-yard TD pass 2 years ago, the Plattenberger connection happened 23 times for 251 yards and four touchdowns last season.

Knowing where the other is on the field is a learned skill for most quarterbacks and receivers, but has become second nature for the twins.

“There have been times in a game where I knew I would be open, and I just said, ‘Hey,’ and he’d know where to throw it,” Kaleb said. “Just a little head nod and look.”

Kaleb was called on to carry the ball more last year, and finished with 74 rushes for 503 yards and 5 TDs. Kody kept keepers 63 times for 246 yards and scored 2 TDs, in addition to completing 66 of 116 passes for 855 yards and 9 scores.

“I probably trust those two instinctually more than a lot of other kids,” Leitzen said. “They’ve played catch probably more than

Telling the two apart is easy on the practice field, where Kody dons a red quarterback jersey. Leitzen doesn’t usually have problems telling twins apart, being the father

of twin daughters, and could tell by whose face is narrower or the birthmark on Kody’s left leg. Their recent increase of commitment in the weight room – which mirrors most of the rest of the Thunder team – has made them more identical-looking than ever before.

“Both of those kids had great weight rooms this summer,” Leitzen said. “It’s a lot harder for me to look at them now and tell them apart. Kaleb’s gained a little bit of weight, and Kody has trimmed down, and they’re a little closer in body type now.”

As the similarities become more apparent, it can also be easy to tell one apart from the other based on their attitude toward one’s mistakes on the field. One is more likely to hear about it from Kaleb than Kody.

“He’s a lot more straightforward, and there will be people who will say that he’s a lot meaner in some perspective,” Kody said of Kaleb. “He’ll just tell you straight up what’s going on, and I’ll try to beat around the bush a little bit and try not to be as much mean about it.”

“He’s a lot nicer,” Kaleb added, “especially to teammates who aren’t expecting something like that. If it’s not a 100 percent pass, he’ll be like, ‘My bad,’ and I’ll say, ‘That’s your fault, you should have caught it.’”

In addition to having his twin brother as a receiving target, Kody can also look toward returners Cory Simpson (25-133, 1 TD) and Jacob Dunk (10-157, 3 TDs). With Kaleb Hartman (73-for338 rushing, 5 TDs) also returning, the Thunder have many skill players coming back to improve on a 4-5 season.

On defense, the Thunder have eight returning starters.

They were one of only two teams — along with Eastland-Pearl City — to hold 1A state champion Forreston to back-to-back scoreless quarters in a game last season.

The Thunder defense also boasts another similarity among the Plattenbergers: both are defensive backs.

“Experience in key spots is going to be huge for us,” Leitzen said. “Third-year starting quarterback, and the skill kids have been in this offense for 3 years now. The consistency you build with that is nice, and we’ve seen that this summer and carrying over to now.”

Warriors have plenty of options in ground game

STERLING – Competition in camp is customary this time of year, especially position battles. Starting jobs are on the line.

However, when asked who the best running back on the team is, Sterling’s Marquez Williams, Jayden Villegas and Negil Bruce all pointed to the Golden Warriors’ top rusher in 2016: Nyrel Sullivan.

Sullivan may be the star of the group, but the Warriors have a stable full of backs that each bring something a little different to the table.

“One of us subs off and another comes from the sidelines,” Villegas said.

“That way we’re never tired, we’re always fresh. We all get a bunch of reps.”

“We’re fortunate to have bodies, so if one guy gets tired, we can sub another guy right in,” Williams said. “We can still be just as effective.”

Sullivan rushed for 915 yards and scored 19 touchdowns on just 104 carries last season in his junior campaign, after running for 762 yards and 11 TDs as a sophomore for Dixon. He’s looking to boost his total to 1,500 yards this season, and wants the running backs to accumulate 3,000 yards as a group.

speed to do what Vaughn did, but will have to develop a physical style as well to ease the loss of Spaulding.

“These guys all have the ability to run between the tackles,” Schlemmer said.

“We’re not just going to push it to the perimeter all the time. There’s going to be times where they’ll need to put their nose down and get 2 yards.”

“Spaulding was a good straightforward runner, and it’s going to be hard to replace his strength,” Sullivan said. “We’re good running backs, but we don’t have the same style as him.”

What will aid the running game more than anything is the guys blocking for them.

Sterling returns four starters up front, and Schlemmer noted four other linemen are making a case for some major
