CHADWICK – A.J. Boonstra looked a little anxious as his son, Max, pointed the 20-gauge shotgun at a bright-orange target.

The anxiety was quickly replaced by a huge grin as his 12-year-old calmly blew away the first two targets on which he had set his sights. As Dad sat on the grass Saturday watching Youth Day activities at Coleta Sportsmen’s Club in rural Chadwick, he couldn’t help being a bit surprised by his deadeye son. “He’s never shot a gun in his life,� Boonstra said. “My sister-in-law brought us here today, but we’ve never been here before.�

Becky Brinkmann of Dixon, a new member of Pheasants Forever, brought the Boonstras after being invited by a friend while visiting Nachusa Grasslands.

Brinkmann was immediately impressed by the Pheasants Forever youth program.

“My husband’s a hunter, and my two boys have been around it, but a lot of kids aren’t,� Brinkmann said. “Part of the program is about spreading the word to friends and then more kids are exposed to it and can see if they want to pursue it.�

Brinkmann said the junior groups allow kids to participate in other events and earn points for taking safety classes that can be redeemed for equipment. “The youth programs have a lot of equipment, so it’s nice that they get a chance to try out different things before they buy it,�

Brinkmann said.

Between 125 and 150 kids, ages 3 to 17, were on hand for the Youth Day activities that also included archery, fishing, games, a petting zoo, a police dog demonstration, and an IDNR educational trailer. Kids hopped on wagons for the trips between the trap range and archery camp.

The event made its fourth run Saturday, but in the past it had been known as Jakes Day. It had been sponsored solely by the local National Wild Turkey Federation chapter, and the name was a reference to the name for young tom turkeys. Several other organizations are now involved with the event, including the Whiteside and Ogle County Pheasants Forever groups, Sauk Valley Whitetails Unlimited, and the Sterling-Rock Falls Gobblers.

“Now that we’ve teamed up with other groups, we just decided to call it Youth Day,� said Kent Bushman of Rock Falls, who in addition to being a Sportsmen’s Club board member, is on committees for the Turkey Federation and Whitetails Unlimited.

Obituaries Michael E. Lingel

BYRON – Michael E. Lingel, 60, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford.

He was born Feb. 11, 1957, in Rockford, the son of Theodore and Helen Lingel. Michael married Mary Meador Ruble in Brookville Church on Sept.

15, 2001. He was a member of Heartland Community Church in Rockford. Michael liked guns and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed camping in his spare time, and was a member of the Good Sam Club. Michael was a proud member of

Loyal Order of the Moose 1551, and was part of Moose Legion 57. He adored his family and his fur babies, Amanda and Dewey.

Michael is survived by his wife, Mary Lingel of Byron; mother, Helen Lingel of Kansas City, Missouri; children, Christina (Mathew) Reese of Kansas City, Missouri, Leonda (Aaron) Sipe of Savanna, and William Lingel of Olatha, Kansas; stepchildren, Jason (Ashley Lott) Ruble and Chad Ruble, both of Lanark; siblings, Lorna Lingel and Toni Lingel, both of Parkville, Missouri; and grandchildren, Briana,

Trinity, Taylor, Kody, Matthew, and Thomas.

He was preceded in death by his father.

An open house celebration of life will be at 4 p.m. July 21 at Mount Morris Moose Lodge, with cousin Linda Johnson speaking at 6 p.m. and a Loyal Order of the Moose Ritual immediately following.

If you knew there was something you could do to protect your teens, would you do it?

Navigating the teen years can be challenging, and anyone who has raised a teen can tell you that it’s not easy and there are many “harms” that we, as parents, want to protect them from and have to worry about.

After all, protecting our children from harm and helping them grow into responsible, caring adults is our top priority.

Parents also know that even in families, no two teens are the same.

Some teens are prone to be adventurous and take unnecessary risks, press their luck and constantly try your patience. Other teens are mellow, studious, polite and pay attention to the risks other teens are taking and tend to steer clear of all the chaos. But no matter the type of teen you have,

they all have one thing in common – to be “liked” and “fit in.”

Whatever type of teen you have, you must be ever vigilant and remember YOU are the PARENT and they are looking to the adults around them for guidance and support as they grow and develop into adults who will eventually take the lead in their communities.

When I go into communities and talk to parents and adults about substance abuse, I always ask them: “How many of you know someone who has an alcohol or drug problem?” Almost everybody knows at least one person, and most of the time they know many.

But have you ever asked yourself how we got this point?

New research shows that addiction is a disease that can cause permanent changes to the chemicals in

the brain, and that the teen brain is still developing until the mid-20s. In other words, when a child drinks alcohol, uses tobacco, marijuana or other drugs, they are 5 times more likely to become addicted because it changes their brain.

Did you know that addiction is the only disease that is 100 percent preventable? I have worked in the mental health and addiction fields for about 20 years, and I have always learned from my clients.

One of the things I learned is that they started drinking alcohol early (most around the age of 12), their parents, adults and friends often provided the alcohol for them, and their addiction progressed from there to using marijuana and eventually harder drugs.

Drug addiction does not

happen by accident; in order to become an drug addict, you have to use the drug! And it’s like playing Russian Roulette with your future.

I have always firmly believed that when we know better, we do better.

As parents, we make mistakes and sometimes we just accept things around as “normal,” and believe there is little we can do to change it. Unfortunately the “norm” for our youth in Carroll County has become to drink alcohol, and lots of it (binge drinking). As parents and adults, we have decided to accept this as “just a part of growing up.” I don’t know about anyone else, but I want better for our youth and our community. And there are many people in our communities who care about

the youth and want them be healthy and safe. You see drinking and driving is not the only risk associated with underage drinking, and substance use and taking the keys away won’t fix the addiction problem and protect your teen’s still developing brain.

As part of this effort, the Carroll County Substance Education Coalition will be providing a series of articles taken from a tabloid developed for Carroll County to educate and inform parents, adults, youth and community leaders. This tabloid provides a wealth of information, as well as the research on the adolescent brain development and the risk of addiction to youth.

This tabloid has been a collaborative effort by caring individuals, agencies

and organizations across Carroll County in an effort to help parents, adults, youth and community leaders stop accepting underage drinking and substance as “normal” and work together to protect our youth and create a healthier, safer community environment.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Samanth Yenney, of Savanna, and Brianna Davis, of Thomson, have been named to the spring semester Dean’s List at Kirkwood Community College. Students on the Dean’s List have achieved a grade-point average of at least 3.3.

Everything is free on Youth Day thanks to $1,000 donations from each sporting organization and $500 from Thrivent Financial.

“Every kid here gets $10 memberships for both youth groups, so that’s where a lot of the cost comes in,” Bushman said. “We get a few things donated, but we don’t really go out and pound the pavement for things.”

The organizations believe the money is well spent.

“We are trying to get numbers up in the shooting sports because we don’t want them to go away,”

“As an organization, we look to SWAT members as experts on issues they’ve been tasked with researching and discussing, and lean on their knowledge when it comes to developing policy and projects,” Whitehouse said.

“But the SWAT members gain just as much as we do as an organization, building project management, leadership skills and more. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.”

Next week, we will be hosting our annual tractor drive on Friday, July 21.

This year we are kicking off from the park in Thomson.

We will then be taking Sandridge Road to Three Mile Road. We will then get on Big Cut Road and up to Mill Road. We will come to Point Rock Park in Mount Carroll for our morning break. We will take Scenic Palisades to Scenic Bluff Road to state Route 64 to get to Old Mill Park in Savanna for lunch. We will then head back to Thomson on Scenic

“I bring my nieces and nephews to this every year because it’s important to teach the kids about firearms safety,” Russell said. “We always liked shooting, but now that we moved out of the city, we all can shoot a lot more.”

The Coleta Sportsmen’s Club, at 21038 Pilgrim Road, was established in 1954. In addition to shooting, members and their families can throw their lines into a private pond stocked with several kinds of fish. The club sponsors shooting, archery and fishing competitions throughout the year.

he Illinois Farm Bureau is looking for members to join the Strength With Advisory Teams for 2018-2019.

SWAT consists of three teams: Local and State Government, Farming Production and Marketing, and Conservation and Natural Resources. IFB members from across the state are appointed to a 2-year term. Individuals serve on a team of 10 Farm Bureau members, one IFB board member and one county Farm Bureau manager.

“SWAT members specialize in identifying and guiding emerging issues which could impact IFB and our members, then deciding on a course of action,” said Ryan Whitehouse, IFB associate director of national legislation.

“SWAT members really are instrumental in setting the direction of the organization for the coming year.”

SWAT members meet four times a year at the IFB building in Bloomington, with additional conference calls as needed. Team members are reimbursed for necessary travel expenses.

Lifescape Community Services recognizes World Elder Abuse Day

June 15 was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the day designated by the United Nations to voice our opposition to the abuse inflicted on older people, most commonly by their families. Lifescape staff members wore WEAAD shirts to call attention to they day.

Abuse of the elderly and adults with disabilities is the least recognized form of family violence, according to the Illinois Department on Aging.

Abuse takes many forms, and in most cases victims are subjected to more than one type of mistreatment. In Illinois, 54 percent of adult abuse reports allege financial exploitation; approximately 23 percent allege physical abuse; 52 percent allege active or passive neglect; and 43 percent allege emotional abuse.

• Passive neglect – the failure by a caregiver to provide an older person with the

necessities of life including, but not limited to, food, clothing, shelter, or medical care, because of failure to understand the older person’s needs, lack of awareness of services to help meet needs, or lack of capacity to care for the older person.

• Willful deprivation – willfully denying assistance

THOMSON – Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge staff will accept applications until July 31 for two special deer hunts at Lost Mound.

The managed hunts, one for youth 10 to 17 and one for adults with disabilities 18 and older,, are conducted within designated closed areas of Lost Mound. All hunters must be accompanied by an adult, able-bodied attendant capable of tracking and retrieving a deer.

The application period is open to residents and nonresidents. All applications will be entered into a random drawing for the 35 hunt sites at 10 a.m.

Aug. at the refuge office, 7071 Riverview Road.

The drawing is open to the public, and applicants do not have to be present.

All hunters, attendants, and any accompanying individuals must attend a mandatory safety orientation. Each session will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Manny’s Pizza, 211 Main St., Savanna, with Sept. 30 and Nov. 10 as

The youth hunt will be Oct. 7 and 8, coinciding with the Illinois Youth Either Sex Deer Hunt. A Jo Daviess County deer permit must be obtained and brought to the orientation.

All youth must show certification of completion of a state-approved hunter safety course.

The hunt for adults with disabilities will be Nov. 11 and 12, which is the Saturday and Sunday before the Illinois Firearms Deer First Season. A minimum P2a Illinois disability classification (or similar disability certification from nonresident states) is required.

Wheelchair-bound and amputee hunters will receive priority selection for hunt sites. A Jo Daviess County deer permit is not needed to apply for this hunt, since the refuge provides the permit.
