MORRISON – At least 25 unlocked vehicles were broken into early Friday, and fires were set in three of them, Police Chief Brian Melton said this morning.

No arrests have been made, but police are investigating more than one person of interest, Melton said. He declined to provide details.

Most of the break-ins occurred between 2 and 6 a.m. in the areas of West South, West Park and West Morris streets. Among the items taken were keys, a tablet, a flashlight

MORRISON – CGH Medical Center has found a new use for an old clinic.

When optometrist Edward Hanlon wanted to move closer to Sterling and Dixon, CGH Morrison Medical Center at 105 S. Heaton St. was left empty.

CGH decided to fill the void with a much-needed, and more convenient, physical therapy clinic.

“We just thought that there was a need for it,” Marketing Director Dana McCoy said. “We knew that there would be patients who would appreciate having a more local place to go.”

Deputy’s entry makes it 3 candidates for sheriff Lewis will run as Republican

ROCK FALLS – A third candidate for Whiteside County sheriff has launched his campaign, and is planning a meet-and-greet at the end of the week.

Whiteside County Deputy Mike Lewis, 46, of Rock Falls, a Republican, announced his intention to run June 9 Mike on his Lewis Lewis for Sheriff Facebook page. He also issued a news release Friday.

He will be at the Tin Roof Tavern, 13464 Galt Road, at 5 p.m. Sunday in conjunction with a fundraiser for April House Children’s Advocacy Center and Jessie’s Mile.

Lewis, a 1990 graduate of Rock Falls High School, worked for 3 years at the Lanark Police Department before joining the sheriff’s department in late 2003. He works on the jail floor, and said he has worked in every section at the department.

He also is a part-time Tampico police officer.

An off-duty vehicle crash on Nov. 18 left Lewis with an injured shoulder, and surgery in April has him on medical leave until August.

He studied criminal justice at Sauk Valley Community College, and attended the Police Academy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

ROCK FALLS – A former Rock Falls police officer says he plans to run for Whiteside County sheriff next year.

Tim Fisher, 46, of Rock Falls, said last week that he will run as a Republican. Lt. John Booker, a Democrat, announced his intention to run for sheriff in May. Fisher now works in behavioral health at KSB Hospital in Dixon, but has spent a majority of his career in law enforcement. He

said he knew from a young age that he wanted to do police work, but wound up taking an unconventional path.

“I knew what my Tim Fisher goal was in junior high, and I signed up for the Army military police as a junior in high school,” Fisher said.

After graduating from Rock Falls High School, he served in the Army for more than 3 years. Upon his return, he applied to several police departments, but went solo for the next step.

Obituaries LAKE CARROLL – Philip S. Konrad, 84, of Lake Carroll, formerly of Prospect Heights, died peacefully Thursday, June 29, 2017, at his home.

He was born Jan. 27, 1933 in St. Louis, the son of Walter and Elizabeth (Schaefer) Konrad. He was a 1951 graduate of Oak Park River Forest High School, and earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from IIT. Philip married Kathryn Welch on Sept. 10, 1955.

In 1979, he started his own successful business, PMA Friction Products, formerly PM Automotive, Inc. He was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church in Shannon. Known as” Farmer Phil” by many, he raised chickens, turkeys, as well as his many adored Labrador retrievers. He was a master gardener and brought to life everything he planted and nurtured. Phil loved the lake and was also an avid fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Kay of Lake Carroll; nine children, John (Debbie), Joe (Paulette), Deb (Dennis) Neumann, Tom (Maria), Joan (Larry) Sweetman, Bob, Jim, Sue (Dennis) Heuer, and Paul (Jill); 23 grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ruth and June; and brother, Bill.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. today, followed by the funeral Mass at 11 a.m. today at St. Wendelin Catholic Church in

Shannon. Interment will follow at St. Wendelin Cemetery in Shannon.

MILLEDGEVILLE – Nina L. Wagner, 76, of Milledgeville, died Friday, June 30, 2017, at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

She was employed by Kendall County for 33 years.

Nina was born Aug. 16, 1940, in Lanark, the daughter of Marvin and Margaret (Shank) Andrews. She married Monty Wagner on July 4, 1959 in Polo. She was a member of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church in Dixon.

City shares some details on firing of maintenance manager

LANARK – City officials have given more details on the council’s June 20 vote to fire maintenance manager Tom Difazzio.

The 5-1 vote came after an executive session lasting more than an hour. Ward 3 Alderman Jay VanMatre voted against the decision.

Maintenance worker Geoff Williams is interim maintenance manager.

In a June 26 news release, officials wrote that Difazzio was notified June 12 by Mayor Ken Viglietta of his employment’s suspension.

“Difazzio was advised the suspension was based on non-performance of duties and complaints about his demeanor when dealing with other maintenance employees and the public. Due to the reactions of Difazzio to the suspension, and the resulting inability of the mayor to explain the suspension process, a Lanark police officer who was serving as a witness to the suspension eventually had to intervene and direct Difazzio not to come back for the day,” officials wrote.

Viglietta said on June 20 said Difazzio was fired for insubordination and code of conduct violations.

During that meeting, a number of

residents spoke in support of Difazzio, who was Lanark’s maintenance manager since August 2013.

Also at the meeting, Lanark resident David Davies said he was told that Difazzio shut off the water of a tenant of Alderman Mark Macomber, at Macomber’s request.

In response, Police Chief Matt Magill said Difazzio asked him May 30 or 31 if he had to shut off the water, and after checking with Carroll County State’s Attorney Scott Brinkmeier, Magill told Difazzio that if a landlord shuts off a renter’s utility for nonpayment of rent, it is a state code violation.

“I informed Mark of this; he was not aware of it being not legal. I also truly do not believe that this is any type of leverage of any public position,” Magill said.

Whether and when the tenant’s water was shut off could not be determined; Williams said June 22 that he had no information on the situation.

Whether Defazzio’s firing was related to this issue could not be determined.

Viglietta declined to detail what constituted his insubordination and code of conduct violations; Difazzio was at the meeting, but did not comment; and Macomber did not speak to the issue at the meeting and has not replied to repeated requests for comment.

Ruf reckless homicide trial moved to September

MORRISON – The trial of a woman charged with reckless homicide in a 5-year-old case again has been moved.

Theresa A. Ruf, 47, formerly of Chadwick and now of Dixon, was set to be tried July 18; that date was reset last week to Sept. 12.

Ruf is charged with reckless homicide, which carries a sentence of 2 to 5 years, and failure to reduce

speed to avoid an accident in the June 5, 2012, death of motorcyclist Samuel L. Munz, 53, of rural Sterling.

Munz rear-ended as he was stopped on state Route 40 in Sterling, about a half-mile east of Ridge Road, preparing to turn into his driveway.

Ruf’s next court appearance is Aug. 23.

When Rus initially was charged, Trish Joyce was Whiteside County state’s attorney. She was appointed a circuit court judge in December, and Terry Costello, appointed to replace

Joyce, picked up the case.

Ethically, he cannot comment on any specifics of the case, Costello has said.

The defense has sought, and the prosecution has not objected to, 37 continuances in this case since Ruf was indicted on Feb. 26, 2013.

In addition, this is the 33rd time a trial date has been set, but that is not unusual in cases that take this long to resolve – the court sets a date as a scheduling placeholder, as it waits for both sides to finish preparations.

FREEPORT – Highland Community College will bring back its orchestra this fall, and area high school and college students and community members are welcome to audition.

Auditions will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 17 in Room FA-06 at the college’s Ferguson Fine Arts Center, 2298 W. Pearl City Road. The alternative date will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 24.

In a news release, staff said instruments will mainly be strings, but director Rianna Caswell is open to select woodwinds and brass, depending on instrumentation represented at the time of audition. Harp, piano, and percussion also are welcome.

Regular rehearsal times will be from 7 to 9 p.m.

Thursdays starting Aug. 31, with a several-week break in September and resuming weekly in October. A concert date will be determined.

There is no cost for students and community members. Students will receive one elective credit, tuition waived, per semester for satisfactory participation in MUS 181 Orchestra.

by Nancy Sweitzer, 64, of Milledgeville.

Johnson was thrown from his motorcycle and struck a second northbound vehicle driven by John Disher, 51, of Savanna.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. Sweitzer and Disher were taken by ambulances to Mercy Hospital in Clinton, Iowa, where their conditions were unavailable Sunday.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s

department and the Carroll County Coroner’s office.

Deputy coroner Tony Garcia said an autopsy will not be performed on Johnson, but toxicology tests will be performed.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, followed by the funeral at 1 p.m. Thursday at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Thomson.

Burial will be at Lower York Cemetery in Thomson.

OREGON – A former Ogle County state’s attorney is among a group of five lawyers who have applied to fill a 15th Judicial Circuit associate judgeship that will open when John F. Joyce retires Sept. 1.

Michael C. Rock, of Oregon, who was state’s attorney for a year, has applied for the position.

The other applicants are Michelle B. Buckwalter-Schurman, of Morrison; Tina J. Coffey, of Dixon; Anthony V. Coon, of Freeport; and John J. Kane, of Mount Carroll.

Rock, who was appointed state’s attorney in January 2013, lost the job to Eric Morrow in the March 2014 GOP primary.

Joyce, 69, was appointed in 2001.

City decides against easing chicken rules

SAVANNA – Three Savanna businesses received initial approval for reimbursement for renovations, building purchase or redevelopment through the city’s new TIF district program, at the City Council’s meeting June 27.

The council approved the first readings of ordinances which would grant TIF agreement with the Answer Fitness Center, for $11,37 over 4 years, for renovations and improvements to the business; to TDP Investments, for $82,369 over 12 years; and to Dwarika Liquors, for $3,462 over 2 years.

The council also voted to deny a proposed ordinance

that would have allowed chickens within the city limits. The Ordinance Committee had reviewed the matter and tasked Superintendent of Public Works John Lindeman to compose a conditional use checklist that would have allowed poultry ownership, given adherence to certain specified conditions. The council decided against this, however, and voted to maintain and uphold the ban on such ownership, which is prohibited under a zoning ordinance.

The council heard a brief presentation from the Rev. Gary Peneta, of Savanna Helping Savanna, asking for more volunteers to help his group maintain, mow and clean yards for elderly, disabled and low-income people in the city. He said his group had one success with a residence on Hill Street and was looking to help others. He also noted the group needs help with materials for landscaping.

SAVANNA – Ann Murphy recently became only the third member of Rotary Club of Savanna to be named an Honorary Rotarian for distinguishing herself by meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary ideals.

Murphy joined the Rotary Club of Savanna in 1989, and became its first female president in 1993.

She served on the board for many years, and was involved in chartering the Al Cini Memorial Interact Club at Savanna High School.

The club remains active at West Carroll High School.

Murphy also was involved in the club foundation, which provides scholarships yearly to West Carroll seniors.

She and her husband, Pat, hosted three longer-term and two short-term Rotary Exchange students over the years. She was involved in many fundraisers that helped fund local grant projects and

scholarships.

She was also involved in with several Rotary District 6420 responsibilities, including assistant district governor, district trainer, District Governors Advisory Council, Financial Council and Scholarship Selection Committee. When Rotary District 6420 teamed up with districts from Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan, Murphy was there to help plan and coordinate. This is now one of the largest trainings for incoming club presidents in the United States.

Hot wheels for Father’s Day at Resthave

This past weekend (June 23) was the 16th annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life walk at Old Mill Park in Savanna. Over $47,000 was raised, with more donations to come in yet.

Many businesses, organizations, and individuals contributed with monetary donations or gave of their time to help with this event. Even though rain put a stop to some of our outdoor activities planned, we continued inside the shelter house by reading the names of cancer survivors who have lost their fight against cancer and to honor those surviving.

A wrap-up meeting is planned for Tuesday, July 18, at 6 p.m., at Henry’s Double K in Mount Carroll.

Anyone interested in serving on the committee is invited to attend. Making new friends, learning new skills, and spending time outdoors are some of the highlights that 4-H campers experienced at 4-H Camp, June 11-15 at LOMC Camp in Oregon. A total of 67 campers from throughout northern Illinois, including Carroll and Whitesidec ounties, participated in the 5-day camp. Sixteen teen camp counselors helped lead activities and served as cabin counselors. Two outstanding campers, Yuriy Guerrero and Faith Green, were recognized for their participation in activities throughout the week. Camp counselors Owen Abell and Erin Stichter were selected as top counselors.

Assistance in planning and carrying out camp activities were 4-H adult volunteers Olivia Guerra, Darren Mosher and Ashley Vegter, in addition to University of Illinois Extension staff members Allie Johnston, Whiteside Extension program coordinator and Martha Ebbesmeyer, youth development educator.
