Work on time, on budget

SAVANNA – High water is the only thing standing between the Savanna/ Sabula bridge project being completed on time, an Illinois Department of Transportation engineer said.

Chris Aude, IDOT project engineer for the U.S. route 52/state Route 64 bridge project, said work still is being done on the substructure of the bridge, which should be completed around the middle of April. Stage One, which was building the wall, is complete; Stage Two will be the roadway and one lane on the causeway, which

should take about 3 months to complete.

Aude says work on the bridge over the Mississippi River is on schedule and within budget, but if there are further delays due to high water, it could fall behind.

Aude said “weather has not affected us; it’s mainly the water level. They’ve never totally pulled out for weather.�

The prime bridge contractor is Kraemer North America, with a number of subcontractors assisting in other work.

The bridge is scheduled to be open to traffic by the end of October, Aude said. “We’ll still have a little bit of roadwork on either

side, then the old bridge will be taken down after that,� she said.

All work, including the teardown of the current bridge, is scheduled to be completed by May 2018.

There will be no road closures during the work, Aude said. There will be one lane one both sides of the river, and signals will be utilized during the necessary roadwork.

CHADWICK – A single write-in candidate is vying for the Chadwick village presidency.

Kimberly Hinrichs, 50, owns and operates the M & K of Chadwick restaurant with her husband, Andy. They Kimberly also offer a Hinrichs concession trailer for auctions.

Hinrichs grew up in Polo, and volunteers with the Chadwick Special Events group, which presents a fall festival, Halloween and Christmas parties, and movies in Chadwick’s park.

Incumbent Larry Miller is not seeking re-election.

Hinrichs answered a questionnaire submitted by Prairie Advocate.

Alderman candidates share roadmap for ward, city

LANARK – Two candidates are vying for outgoing incumbent Weston Burkholder’s Ward 2 alderman seat in the April 4 election.

Brad Knutti, 52, is a 1983 graduate of Lanark High School, and a graduate of the Devry Institute of Technology in Lombard.

He is a senior technical software support engineer at Cleo Communications, and a member of the Lanark Community Club.

Steven Kruzek, 58, worked in retail and sales for 31 years before retiring.

He earned bachelor’s degrees in economics and accounting, and has been a member of the Lanark Lions Club, Friends of the Lanark Library, Lanark Chamber of Commerce, Old Settlers Day Committee, and other groups.

BRAD KNUTTI How do you want to continue with economic development in the city?

The previous administration has done a good job with economic growth. But the city must improve on looking at all opportunities for growth and government assistance available and making sure none are missed or expire.

The city needs a new updated capital improvement plan, made available and communicated to the citizens, so everyone can work together in (the city’s) growth and improvements. The city’s budget should be a

What are some areas you see as strengths of Lanark?

A major strength and asset the Lanark community has is the Eastland School District.

We have some diverse and strong businesses currently.

Lanark also offers a great, small-town friendly and safe community environment.

There is also a strong group of volunteer organizations and clubs in our community.

Also, our fire and police departments strive to be the best in the area.

What are some areas you see as needing improvement?

Infrastructure of roads and buildings is a major concern of mine. We need to increase and have more open communications between local government and the general public, so they can work hand in hand in the future. The city must maintain and keep a healthy and prosperous downtown district.

Where do you see Lanark in 4-5 years?

I have a very positive, optimistic outlook for our city and growing in both size and offerings.

Having grown up in Lanark, without leaving our town you could buy anything you needed.

I would like to see that once again, although we may not be able (to) go back completely to that experience.

What makes you best qualified to serve as Ward 2 alderman?

Having been in the customer and technical support field for over 30 years, I have great communication skills with

Lanark needs to improve the existing infrastructure, improving streets and sidewalks. More businesses have to be opened and houses need to be occupied.

What are some areas you see as strengths of Lanark?

The education system, low crime rate, multiple restaurants, lots of local activities, and friendly people.

What are some areas you see as needing improvement?

Streets and sidewalks, communication between people and the government, and quicker action on pending matters.

Where do you see Lanark in 4-5 years?

A town with a more comprehensive growth plan.

What makes you best qualified to serve as Ward 2 alderman?

I’m involved in many aspects of government and community. I ran Hometown Days for several years, and served as the president of the Heritage Center Board.

Obituaries Lyle Cartwright CHADWICK AND FAIR HAVEN – Lyle Cartwright, 80, of Chadwick, passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at home.

Lyle was born Feb. 28, 1937, at home, the son of James Clifton “Cliff” and Barbara Howe (Heide) Cartwright. He grew up on the family farm, attending country school.

Lyle married the love of his life, Carol Beyer, on Feb. 24, 1962, at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church. He received his GED later, when he was a young married man and already had children. His children remember giving him congratulations cards on his accomplishment.

Lyle was a farmer, plain and simple. He liked the outdoors and loved managing farm life with Carol. Lyle and Carol just recently celebrated 55 years of marriage. One of the highlights of Lyle’s life included him holding and playing with his newborn great-grandson just a week ago. Lyle farmed all of his life. He also operated Cartwright’s Custom Stacking and Bailing for many years. He enjoyed

Mayoral candidates share visions during forum

SAVANNA – Sales tax for schools, cleaning up the community, and traffic safety were some of the topics discussed Thursday during a forum for Savanna’s mayoral candidates.

Candidates Chris Lain, Bill Nemec, and Anna Rice each spoke for about 15 minutes at the forum, at Carroll County Housing Authority’s Mest Manor facility. A fourth candidate on the April 4 ballot, Gary LaShelle, did not attend.

The field of four are seeking to fill the seat left by former Mayor Tony McCombie after her election

in November to the 71st District state representative seat. Alderman Peg Haffey was selected to complete McCombie’s term, but will not seek election.

Ed Bochniak, the authority’s executive director, introduced the candidates. Lain, the Savanna Chamber of Commerce president, was the first to speak.

“We came to Savanna about 5 years ago. We came on a long vacation, and absolutely fell in love with this place. We’re completely vested in this community, and I think it’s one of the most beautiful places in the state,” Lain said.

The candidate emphasized a need for regular cleanup efforts, his support of

Main Street becoming a tax increment finance district, and working with the human resources department at the Thomson federal prison to help job-seekers navigate the hiring process.

“I want to keep moving that forward,” Lan said. “We want to build a stronger community in Savanna. We want to take those programs forward.”

Next up was Rice, who said she’d lived in Savanna since she was 15. She has volunteered with the Red Cross, USO, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts.

“We are here for one thing tonight. It’s time for a change,” Rice said.

“Savanna has so much potential for change.”

Rice supported adding a weather siren in the

community, restricting motorcycle parking to only side streets in the downtown, and giving veterans and senior citizens a tax break on their water and sewer bill.

Nemec was the last speaker, citing his business experience with a bulletresistant enclosure company at the former Savanna Army Depot and years managing the construction of homes and managing apartment buildings in Florida. He supported bringing the Isle of Capri casino boat from Davenport, Iowa, to Savanna, and a Galenastyle business district in Savanna’s downtown.

“We need a reason for people to come here. We’re not going to get another

factory, not another depot,” Nemec said.

A question-and-answer period followed the candidates’ presentations.

Kayla Klein, who has a child about to enter the West Carroll School District, said, “Something I’ve noticed with my mother friends, the school system has taken a huge hit.

Is there a position for a mayor to help with that?”

Lain said the current TIF district, which has Shopko and Sullivan’s Foods as part of its businesses, is about to expire.

“That tax money will go to the schools,” he said. “There’s a group of people being formed in the community to create unique ideas to present to the school board and ways to

raise funds.”

Sara Purdom asked where each of the candidates stand on a 1 percent sales tax on goods sold in Savanna, to help with upkeep of the school district’s buildings.

“When it comes to the 1 percent school sales tax, I’m against tax raises all the time,” Rice said. “But whatever it is that would help our children, the education, that’s what it’s all about. I would be glad to pay a little extra if that’s what it takes.”

Nemec said, “If the public wants it.”

Lain said he thought the tax was necessary for the schools, noting the tax has passed four times in Savanna while it has failed countywide.

complete a streetscape on Main Street in 2018.

We need to enforce the ordinances we already have. We also need to work on connecting the people who need help updating properties with those who can help. This includes connecting seniors with volunteers to do things like clean up yards and paint homes. We need to look at where our tourism dollars are spent. We need to create a clear brand for Savanna, identify 2-3 key markets to spend in and go after those markets.

I see Savanna at a turning point right now. We have the opportunity to move forward and build a stronger community in Savanna. If elected, I see a stronger Main Street with thriving businesses, a redeveloped riverfront, and a stronger sense of community and pride.

LANARK – Two candidates are vying to replace outgoing Lanark Mayor John Huggins on April 4.

Tom Kocal, 62, and Ken Viglietta, 69, are running for the mayor’s seat.

Mayor John Huggins will be moving out of the city and is not seeking re-election. Leon Johnson II is a write-in candidate for the mayor’s seat, according to the Carroll County Clerk’s office.

Mayor John Huggins will be a tough act to follow. In his 4-year tenure, Huggins and his progressive City Council created a business environment that helped at least six Lanark businesses expand their services, and saw seven new businesses set up shop. This was a period of unprecedented growth for a community of 1,500 people. As your mayor, I will continue the proactive relationship with our City Council and business community that was nurtured by Mayors Ed Stern and Huggins.

Our school grades – our PARCC, or Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers test scores at West Carroll Primary and West Carroll High School. When compared to other Carroll County cities’ test scores of our students’’ abilities, these test score results were assessed and rated against the state of Illinois overall student test abilities, and fell well below other students.

What makes you best qualified to serve as the mayor?

I’ve got plenty of vision.

I’ve got a thousand ideas. I have at least 12 things we can do.

Two seek village president’s post in Shannon

SHANNON – An incumbent will square off against a challenger April 4 for the Shannon village president’s seat.

President Bonnie Heckman Foust, 61, will retire in May from Eastland Elementary School after a 25-year career in special education.

She’s also an author, life and emotional freedom technique teacher, and a speaker. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Illinois University, and her Master of Education degree from Rockford College.

Foust participates in area theater groups, was a youth advisor and Bible school director at Bethel United Methodist Church in Shannon, and served as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, among other community activities.

The challenger, Amanda Klinefelter, 37, is responsible for marketing at all three locations of First State Bank of ShannonPolo-Lake Caroll. She has been a member of the village fire department for 15 years, and since 2009 has been the deputy chief

of Shannon’s EMS personnel.

Village government is working hard to maintain and improve infrastructure, provide water and sewer, keep a balanced budget and protect the community. Small communities like Shannon have limited economic means to attract businesses.

I am calling all interested individuals to contact me, regardless of the election outcome, so we can begin to design a future for Shannon created by its citizens.

Shannon has many strengths, the first being its people. There are three strong churches in Shannon.

Eastland Elementary School, which houses prekindergarten through sixth grade, is a strong member of our community. The village police department, as well as the police auxiliary, are very important. The Lions Club, the American Legion, and the Chamber of Commerce are major role players in the village’s celebrations throughout the year. The Shannon Fire Protection District serves our residents well. Shannon also is blessed with many businesses within the village. Last, but not least, is the Shannon Village Board of Trustees.

What are some areas you see as needing improvement?

There are two areas that

I feel Shannon is lacking, and those are a community center and a village museum. I feel a community center could be a wonderful place for people to gather for activities and to connect with each other. A museum would be a wonderful place to keep the history of our village.

Where do you see Shannon in 4-5 years?

I see Shannon working hard to maintain its infrastructure, including streets and sidewalks. I see the water project done and the filtration system working well.

What makes you best qualified to serve as the village president?

Over the last 8 years, the village boards that I have worked with have accomplished many things. A few of them are codification of the village ordinances for the first time since 1916;

starting a website and having the ordinances accessible to residents; taking down the old nursing home and selling the land; resurfacing Market Street at no cost to the village; updating the village park with equipment and electrical services; bringing a new Casey’s to town; starting the water project to remove the radium in the water; and doing some infrastructure work.

AMANDA KLINEFELTER How do you want to continue with economic development in the village?

The economic structure of the community has been seriously declining for many years. We need to develop economic plans for the future – 5-, 10-, and 15-year plans.

What are some areas you see as strengths of Shannon?

Everyone has been extremely supportive. I spent over 15 hours in the community, knocking on every door. Our little community is amazing. I am very proud to represent this village in the future.

What are some areas you see as needing improvement?

We need to evaluate

the overall condition of the village infrastructure.

Where do you see Shannon in Amanda Klinefelter 4-5 years?

My vision for Shannon in 4-5 years, under my leadership, would be to have community togetherness, while having an improved infrastructore and a stable plan for the future. I would hope that we have addressed the inconsistencies and created a structure that continues to allow for sustainable growth for future generations.

What makes you best qualified to serve as village president?

I have lived in Shannon for 15 years. During this time, I have been involved in numerous community activities as well as serving as Chamber president for 5 years, the 150-Year committee, Community Matters, as president of Eastland Athletic Boosters, and many other community projects.

I have been attending city council and committee meetings for (more than) 2 years, and have become very involved in the current city infrastructure issues.​

Dear Amy: My family and I are new to the area. I met an elderly neighbor over the summer when I was outside working in my yard. I have noticed a steady decline in his behavior. He seems disoriented and unkempt.

The other day, the kids and I were out walking and we stopped to chat with him. He smelled very bad and appears to have lost a lot of weight since this past summer. What can I do to help ? I do not want to insult him or appear nosey, but I am worried.

Dear Worried: This is a pretty common issue for the staff at the Lifescape Community Services office in Sterling.

Lifescape staff can do a “welfare check” to check on him and assess the situation.

They will offer services and resources and help him get the help he may need.

As to continued economic development, we have two empty lots in downtown Lanark that we need to come up with a marketing strategy. In the bigger picture, we must keep Lanark prepared and welcoming when opportunity knocks.

My education in business management, along with 50 years in the workplace, 40 of which were in managerial roles, along with the hundreds of hours spent with the maintenance and police departments as a Lanark alderman, prepare me as the best qualified to be mayor of Lanark.

Happy spring break week! I have come to the conclusion that spring break is pointless.

In looking at the school calendar to determine who was off and who was not, so I knew which schools needed bags for the backpack program for the week, I saw that with all the school related activities going on, no one is really getting a break if you are in high school.

It has made my life easier here at work, as I am able to get a number of the food items we give out through the backpack program delivered right to our office door. Extension seeks Master Naturalists Prairie Advocate staff

The Carroll-LeeWhiteside Extension Unit has announced that the new Master Naturalist training will be from 2 to 6 p.m. for 7 weeks of Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning May 16.

This program will offer training by local and regional natural resource instructors and train individuals about the natural communities found in Northern Illinois. Once training is completed, participants are expected to complete a volunteer service project to become a certified Master Naturalist. Once certified, the Master Naturalists

are expected to annually conduct some level of volunteer stewardship and continuing training to maintain their certification.

The curriculum will cover topics ranging from natural history, understanding the natural world, communicating with nature, and environmental ethics and philosophy.

Denim & Diamonds benefits Senior Services The Mount Carroll Rotary Club, serving our community with distinction for more than 30 years, is hosting the first “Denim and Diamonds” dinner dance on Saturday, April 1, at Henry’s Double K in Mount Carroll.

Dancing to music with DJ Sandy Wurster will follow a delicious buffet style dinner featuring baked chicken and grilled pork loin. A variety of gourmet desserts donated by friends of Rotary and local businesses will be auctioned to benefit Rotary’s community service projects.

Activities at the Senior Center Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities.

The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/ or haul the papers to the distribution center.

Seniors Around the County GRO – Great River Outreach The Great River Outreach offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the former Chestnut Park School near Poopy’s, south of town on state Route 84.

In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church.

Any age is welcome. Donations are accepted but not required.

Are You Turning 65?

Do you need help understanding Medicare A, B, C and D? Then come and see us at the Senior Center. We will help make this time easier for you.

Turning 65 can be very confusing with all the information you receive in the mail about which Medicare D Plan to take or which supplemental to get. If you have questions, stop by and see our SHIP Counselors, Deb Connor and Karen Holm, and we can help you sort through the confusion. Also remember to stop at the Carroll County

Court House to complete your Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption application and affidavit.

When you turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare, the best time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period.

Your IEP includes the three months before, the month of, and the three months following your 65th birthday.

Your IEP will span from September 2016 to March 2017. If you enroll in Medicare during this time, you will avoid late enrollment penalties.

The date when your Medicare coverage begins depends on when you enroll during your IEP. For your coverage to begin as soon as possible, it is best to enroll in the first three months of your IEP. Your Medicare coverage will then go into effect starting the month you turn 65.

To enroll in Medicare, please stop by the Senior Center and we can do this for you. It is important to be proactive and take the steps to enroll during your IEP. If you miss your IEP, you may be limited to specific times when you can enroll in Medicare in the future, and you may face a penalty for late enrollment, resulting in higher premiums.

If you qualify, you can apply for the Benefits Access Program, formerly Circuit Breaker, and receive a discount on your license plate sticker. Income guidelines per year are: for one – $27,610; and for two – $36,635.

Also if you have applied before please check with us to see if it is that time of the year to reapply for your license plate discount.

If you applied in 2014, you will need to apply again this year. Remember to bring proof of all income for 2015 (i.e. 1099 from Social Security, or your 1040 or 1040A income tax form, etc.) to complete your license plate discount application.

The Department on Aging has notified us that starting Jan. 1, 2017, you will need to bring proof of income for 2015 and 2016 in order to qualify for the license plate discount.

Our first Rules of the Road class will be from 10 a.m. to noon May 26. If you are due to take your test, this class would be a big help as the instructor

Our first Defensive Driving Class will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 23 and April 24. After attending this class, you may receive a discount on your auto insurance.

Carroll County Archery SPIN Club starts new season

Carroll County Archery SPIN Club will begin a new season April 5 at the Mike and Jodi York farm at 25269 E. Locust Road in rural Lanark. A parent or another adult must accompany you.

Dress for the weather. You need to arrive at least a halfhour before ending time if you are going to be late and want to shoot. Bring what equipment you have with you. Equipment will also be available for use.

There is no cost for 4-H’ers to attend. Cost for non 4-H’ers is $20, which covers all sessions. The Archery SPIN club is open to all youth 8 to 18 years old who would like to learn how to shoot or advance their skills.

Practice sessions/ workshops for the spring are scheduled for 5 to 6 p.m.

Driving Drafts – No License Required SPIN Club

Youth 8 to 18 years old

by Sept. 1, 2016, may join the Driving Drafts SPIN Club sponsored by the Carroll Co. 4-H. Participants will learn about draft horses and their uses, and learn how to ground drive. You do not need to own a horse to attend. Draft horses will be provided. The club will meet from 10 a.m. to noon April 8 and May 13, and from 5:30 to 8 p.m. June 5, June 19, July 3, July 17, and July 31. Most meetings will be at 9822 Mill Road in Mount Carroll. The club is free to 4-H members and costs $20 for nonmembers.

A parent or guardian must attend the first meeting.

Participants must wear closed toe shoes, such as cowboy boots or other hard surface leather shoes. This year’s event will be April 21-22 at the Discovery Center Children’s Museum in Rockford. bunny rabbits! 4-H Rabbit SPIN Club is open to 4-H’ers and non 4-H’ers 8 to 18 years old by Sept. 1, 2016. You need not own a rabbit to participate. The club will meet at the Wynia Home at 610 E. Washington St. in Mount Carroll from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 3, May 8 and May 21. There will be rabbit shows in Belvidere June 6, June 26, July 10, July 24 and July 31.

Field trips to professional rabbit shows and breeders rabbitries are planned. Learn how to handle, feed, groom and perform vet checks.

Learn what things are healthy and edible in your yard. Learn how to use their manure to grow healthy flowers and vegetables. Kids who choose meat pens will be guided on breeding, care and show. The club has a scholarship program for new members if needed.

Science Siesta!

Girls + Science = Fun

Have you ever dreamt of spending the night in a museum? No, this is not a movie, it’s Science Siesta!

Hosted by the University of Illinois Extension, this annual event for girls in the fourth through sixth grades will take place April 21- 22 at the Discovery Center Children’s Museum in Rockford. This action-packed overnight will combine the fun of a pajama party with hands-on science experiences.

“This is our 16th year of conducting Science Siesta, we have reached over 2,400 girls so far and we are excited to continue to offer this fun, interactive event to encourage girls to consider science-related career fields,” said Johnna Jennings, University of Extension 4-H youth development educator.

At Science Siesta, girls have the opportunity to meet actual females in science career fields from throughout northern Illinois.

The scientists will share information about their background and involve the girls in activities much like they complete in their work every day.

Youth participate in activities based on the “Wonderwise” curriculum developed by the University of Nebraska that highlights the work of female scientists and then translates their work into hands-on science based activities, which are fun and engaging. .Science Siesta for Girls will begin with registration at 5 p.m. April 21 and will conclude with check-out at 8:30 a.m. April 22. Durand 4, South Beloit 2 MARCH 21 Pearl City 8, West Carroll 1: The Lady Wolves broke open a 1-1 game with 6 runs in the top of the fourth inning in Thomson.

West Carroll put up a run in the bottom of the opening inning and Pearl City promptly tied the score with a run of its own in the top of the second. The Lady Wolves added a run in the top of the sixth.

Kendra Melville went 2-for-3 with an RBI and also earned the pitching win, going the distance and allowing 4 hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts. Tia Clark, Sarah Pena, and Taylor Brudi each went 2-for-4. Emily Suiter took the pitching loss for the Lady Thunder, going 3 2/3 innings and allowing 7 runs on 6 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 1.

Emma Aljets and Sydney Long were both 2-for-3 for West Carroll.

“Pearl City just played a much cleaner game than we did,” West Carroll coach Don Mathey said.

“We also need to get more runs and hits throughout our lineup. I believe that we will improve with time”.

Doty wins 2nd state title for wrestling co-op Prairie Advocate staff

DeKALB – Eastland eighth-grader Ethen Doty won his second consecutive undefeated IESA wrestling state title in the 105-pound weight class recently at Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center.

Doty, wrestling for the West Carroll-Eastland co-op won the championship match, 6-1, over Coby Windle, an undefeated wrestler from Colfax Ridgeview. That ended Doty’s middle school wrestling career (sixth through eighth grade) with a perfect 89-0 record.

On his way to the championship match, Doty pinned his first round opponent in 49 seconds, won his quarterfinal match by an 11-2 major decision, and pinned his semifinal foe in 2 minutes, 28 seconds.

Doty is the son of Andrew and Barb Doty.

The co-op team was led by head coach Brady Knop. Assistant coaches were Dan Hartman, Andrew Doty, Bob Kallemeyn and Eli Rolli.

Eastland and West Carroll have had a co-op program for 2 seasons.

Brooke Stralow had a homer and two RBI, and temmate Emma Sitzmore added a double and a pair of runs batted in for the Fillies.

Morris 10, West Carroll 0 (5 inn.): The Redskins blanked the Lady Thunder, scoring 4 runs in the third, a pair in the fourth, and 4 more in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game. Forreston 3, Eastland 1: The Lady Cougars fell to Forreston in German Valley as Lady Cardinal pitcher Sam Greenfield gave up 6 hits over 7 innings to take the victory. Morgan Kuelling led the 6-hit Forreston offensive attack with a two-base hit.

Rock Falls 8, Sterling Newman 7: Newman nearly came all the way back from an 8-0 deficit after 5 and a half innings. Sherrard 5, Sterling 4: An inability to advance baserunners proved to be Sterling’s undoing at home.

Oswego East 2, Sterling 1 Erie/Prophetstown 6, Polo 4 MARCH 25 Alton 5, Freeport 2 Civic Memorial 7, Freeport 4 Hartman named Pitcher of the Week Cornell College senior, Eastland High School graduate and Lanark native Tyrus Hartman was selected as the Midwest Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the period ending March 19.

Hartman tossed a completegame 2-hitter in Cornell’s 6-1 victory over Central on March 13 in Lakeland, Florida. The 6-foot-4-inch right-hander was dominant from the start, striking out 9 and not issuing a walk. Hartman faced only 4 batters over the minimum for the 7-inning contest. He retired 12 of the final 14 hitters he faced. He is 1-1 on the season with 12 strikeouts in 9 innings pitched. The Rams (2-6 overall) finished 2-4 during a competitive spring break trip to Florida.
