All the learning that’s fit to print Students turn designs into reality with 3-D printers

How do 3-D printers work?

MORRISON – The class of high school students sat at their computers Thursday, following teacher Chris Scott’s instructions to create a three-dimensional model for translation to the real world. “Take time to think about where they’ll start and where they’ll end,” Scott told the 10 students at Morrison Institute of Technology, as they worked on using software to design a bracket to send to a 3-D printer. The technique, in which plastic or another substance is laid down in layers to create three-dimensional objects or parts for assembly, is becoming more widely available as the technology improves and the cost of the printers comes down. At one point, 3-D printers could cost $1 million, but today, some are available for a fraction of that, in the thousands or even less. Steve Bierdeman, a vocational welding and machining instructor at Whiteside Area Career Center in Sterling, said his second-year students assembled a 3-D printer from a $200 kit over the course of 2 to 3 months this past school year. Like the printer itself, the classes provide a multilayered approach to design and engineering, honing students’ design skills, finetuning their problem-solving abilities, and putting their engineering talents to the test. A project starts in a student’s head, becomes a two-dimensional model in a design program and, if all goes as planned, graduates to a successful translation into the third-dimension. It also adds another tool to an increasingly technological tool belt that students will need to succeed in today’s job market. Before beginning printing, though, the design must be created. Scott’s class is made up of high school students taking a dualcredit course, in which they learn about creating 3-D digital prototypes, assembly

This marks the first year for the dual-credit program, in which students from

Chris Scott, president at Morrison Institute of Technology, said the printers take a computer model and slice it into layers of machine code. The machine code tells the printer how to lay down layers of the material being used to create an object. “We can use wood fiber, plastic, or nylon. We can push the envelope pretty far,” Scott said. Whiteside Area Career Center’s 3-D printer uses ABS plastic, said Denis Mennie. The material is heated to a high temperature to be pliable enough for molding into the desired shape. In the case of wood fiber, the printer reached 240 degrees Celsius, or 464 degrees Fahrenheit. Scott cited one design which took only 5 to 10 minutes to get to a printer. “By lunchtime, we could have a fully printed product,” Scott said. When creating an object with a hollow interior, designers may need to create supports in the design to prevent the object from collapsing. Once printed, the supports can be removed, and pieces of the object can be assembled. The printing technique isn’t limited to technology. Certain kinds of tissues and organs, such as replacement joints and skin grafts, are already being printed, without the heating aspect of the process for inorganic materials. Mennie said that while the career center couldn’t do skin graft printing, they would like to partner with CGH Medical Center in Sterling on various projects. heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, but it’s a cool skill set to have,” Williams said. MORRISON â€“ While General Electric continues to work with state regulators to remedy environmental concerns surrounding its closed plant, the cityâ€™s one consolation is cheap storage. The city renewed a storage agreement with the company Jan. 9, which allows it to use one of the buildings at GEâ€™s sprawling site on West Wall Street. Known as Building 17, it once was home to a Carnation milk factory. The city first entered into the pact with GE in 2013, and the amended version extends the arrangement until March 21, 2021. Use of the building through that period will cost the city $1. The extra storage space allows the city to delay a pressing capital project â€“ a new public works building that could cost up to $500,000. A new sewer plant under construction at an estimated cost of $19 million, and several pricey road projects are higher priorities. â€œWe have a public works building, but weâ€™re still cramped for space, and itâ€™s in a flood plain,â€? City Administrator Barry Dykhuizen said. â€œItâ€™s getting toward the end of its useful life, but until then, the GE space tides us over.â€? said. â€œWe abandoned that site and drilled a new well, and without the well house, a lot of items in storage didnâ€™t have a home.â€? While the storage space comes in handy, the long-term future of the site is a much larger issue. The city has fielded inquiries about reuse of the buildings, but serious conversations canâ€™t begin until the IEPA signs off on the environmental situation. â€œAs best we know, itâ€™s pretty much just the groundwater that is an issue, but they will be checking floors and other concerns inside the buildings,â€? said Mayor Everett Pannier, a former GE employee. The plant closed in 2010, and in 2011 a consent order came down from the IEPA. Although there was no admission of guilt, the company agreed to deal with any groundwater contamination problems. The company paid the city $650,000, and set up a testing system. â€œThey put in quite a few monitoring wells â€“ there are at least a dozen between the golf course and near the dump site north of town,â€? Pannier said. The former owner of Prairie Ridge Golf Course, Lowell Beggs, filed a lawsuit against GE for alleged contamination at the business and his home that was adjacent to the golf course. Beggs died of cancer in May 2016, but the lawsuit is still making its way through the court system. Pannier said he expects it to be resolved soon. The environmental concerns centered around various cleaning solvents the company used prior to 1994. Of particular concern was trichloroethylene, which was used until the mid-1970s. SAVANNA â€“ As the clocked ticked away on time to put a citywide sales tax proposal before voters on April 4, the Savanna City Council was told revenue could not be used to help the West Carroll school district as intended. That seemed to end the discussion, at least for now. West Carroll Superintendent Adam Brumbaugh told the council on Jan. 10 that, according to the districtâ€™s legal counsel, the city had only until Tuesday (Jan. 17) to put a referendum on the April 4 ballot. The district had hoped that revenue from a citywide sales tax could be shared with the schools. Brumbaugh admitted he and the district didnâ€™t give the council much time to consider the matter. He, legal counsel and the districtâ€™s architect had formulated ways sales tax revenue could be â€œappropriatately utilizedâ€? by the schools while also aiding in property tax relief. He said the districtâ€™s lawyer had submitted two documents to City Attorney Phil Jensen: a draft of a resolution that the city could adopt, as well as an intergovernmental agreement that could be approved.

Savanna Mayor Peg Haffey said Jensen determined that, while a city has the power to impose such a sales tax, it does not have the authority to share the tax with a school district. Jensen said his conclusion was that while the revenue could be used by a city for public infrastructure expenses, the definition of â€œpublic infrastructureâ€? does not include public schools. Having learned that, the city canceled a Contracts and Lease Committee meeting scheduled for Friday to discuss the matter. Brumbaugh said even if the referendum resolution isnâ€™t passed now, the matter was worth pursuing in the future. He added that his talks with Haffey had been very productive and good. â€œI donâ€™t want you to rush to a decision that weâ€™ll both regret, and I donâ€™t want you to rush to a decision that will fail,â€? Brumbaugh said. Jensen said â€œgood public schools are good for economic development,â€? but he cautioned the council to be sure that if it moved forward with such a measure, it provide â€œadequate time for public relationsâ€? to explain the rationale and benefits to the public. SHANNON – Three people were taken to a hospital, but no students were hurt, when an SUV collided with the back of an Eastland school bus stopped at a

railroad crossing just south of Shannon. The crash happened around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday on Shannon Road at the Canadian Pacific Railroad crossing. The southbound bus carrying students in grades K-6 was struck as it began to accelerate, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department said.

Heather Skerik, 30, of Shannon, and two children who were her passengers were taken to FHN Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. They were later treated and released. Skerik was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to wear a seat belt. The students were released to their parents.

She received the 2015 State Master Gardener Team Award, and was recognized for helping clients at Self Help in Sterling learn how to garden and grow food. • Jim Workman is the owner of Workman Heating and Cooling. The business has been in the family since 1949, and Jim took over in 2008. This year, Jim worked tirelessly to help paint over 160 of the city’s nearly 300 fire hydrants. The Morrison Chamber of Commerce expected the project to be finished in spring 2017, but thanks in part to Jim’s work the project was complete before the end of 2016. • Kevin and Lynn Kenady are owners of Happy Joe’s Pizza and Ice Cream. Since opening in the late 1980s they have hired dozens of high school students and have provided donations to benefits and events in the community. They refer to their workers as their ‘kids’ and have signatures of many local patrons on their walls, which helps create a sense of family and commitment to community.

MORRISON – The construction company working on the city’s new wastewater treatment plant expects to complete its work in August, and it should be operating this fall. Leander Construction completed several parts of the project in December, including the installation of mechanical and electrical equipment in the control building. That means some hefty bills for various stages of the work are coming before the City Council. A request for payment, in the amount of nearly $585,000, was approved at the Jan. 9 council meeting. A couple of key unknowns remain that could greatly impact the total cost of the project. One is whether the EPA will allow the city to refinance over a 30-year period. DIXON – Tuition waivers and scholarships at Sauk Valley Community College will be reined in starting in the fall to address the college’s financial plight. In reducing both athletic scholarships and tuition waivers for Sauk Scholars by one-third, and setting up a three-tier system for waiving tuition for dualcredit students, the college will save about $170,000. Sauk is operating with a fiscal year 2017 budget with a $1.9 million deficit, and is unsure how much – if any – funding it will receive from the state. While the stopgap measure signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner on June 30 fully funded K-12 education for the whole school year, Sauk got just 28 percent of its funding. That’s after the college got about 20 percent of its funding for the 2015-16 school year, via a previous stopgap measure. The decision to reduce the tuition waivers was made shortly after the Oct. 24 Board of Trustees meeting, at which President Dave Hellmich

made the proposals and pointed out that the college is budgeted to waive nearly $1 million for those three groups of students this fiscal year. That’s about 8 percent in free college, compared to an average of 4 percent for similar schools. “When we compared ourselves to our peers, we had more waivers than, I think, anyone we compared ourselves to,” said Steve Nunez, Sauk’s vice president of research, planning and information affairs. Sauk now charges dualcredit students half-price for tuition. Aside from Whiteside Area Career Center students, whose waivers would not be changed, students who qualify for free lunch would get 75 percent of their tuition waived; those qualifying for reduced lunch still would get half off; and all other dualcredit students would get 25 percent waived. Athletic waivers will be reduced by one-third, as will credit-hours offered for free to Sauk Scholars – high school seniors who rank in the top 10 percent of their class. West Carroll baseball fundraiser

The West Carroll baseball program is doing a Manny’s taco fundraiser on Feb. 2 at the West Carroll Middle School in Mount Carroll from 4 to 7 p.m. It will coincide with the West Carroll vs. Stockton boys basketball game. It is dine-in, with carryouts available. The $6 cost gets you three tacos and a drink. Dessert will be available for $1. All money raised goes to baseball equipment purchases, such as new bases, field equipment and possibly a new hitting cage to be shared with the summer baseball/ softball programs. economic and demographic criteria, but it is generally assumed that cities with a population of less than 5,000 are not financially equipped to pay for large public works projects. Morrison’s population is estimated to be about 4,136. An extension of the life of the loan is also important in keeping ratepayers’ bills in check. “A 30-year loan gives us the ability to spread out the cost, and ratepayers would see more gradual increases in their bills,” City Administrator Barry
