Thora the bald eagle brought things to a screeching halt Saturday at Clinton Community College when she spoke up during Saving Our Avian Resources’ live birds of prey program at the college. Thora came to SOAR with lead poisoning and could not be released back into the wild. The program was part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Mississippi River Project’s 33rd annual Bald Eagle Watch, held at Lock and Dam 13, near Fulton, and at the college. PAGE A3.

STERLING – The United Way of Whiteside County welcomed a new leader Friday for the first time in 24 years.

Diana Verhulst, of Prophetstown, was chosen to lead the organization as its new CEO, replacing longstanding Executive Director Russ Siefken, who retired Dec. 30 after more than 2 decades in the position.

United Way Board President Elizabeth Klahn said in a news release that Verhulst brings a diverse range of experience to the job, including donor cultivation, grant writing, corporate partnership development, event programming, strategic planning and public speaking.

“Diana has an impressive set of skills and talents to bring to the United Way, and we are confident that her dynamic personality is the perfect fit to continue the mission of the United Way of Whiteside County,” Klahn said.

Verhulst’s work with the organization began in midNovember, and on Nov. 11 she stepped down from her position as director of advancement at Pinecrest Community, a continuing care retirement community in Mount Morris, where she has worked for about 5 years.

She also has prior

experience as executive director of the American Red Cross in both Rockford and Freeport, and as a newspaper reporter at The Journal-Standard in Freeport.

Verhulst said she looks forward to continuing the momentum built by Siefken in supporting area nonprofits.

“It is a historic organization with a broad social impact, and I want nothing more than to help maximize our assistance to those who need it in Whiteside County,” she said.

She said education and literacy are two focuses she is especially passionate about.

“Writing and reading have played a huge role in my life, so that is what grabbed my attention from the start,” she said. “But I also look forward to finding innovative ways to grow our services and work with all our agency partners.”

Verhulst earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science with postgraduate studies in mass communication and journalism from California State University at Northridge and the University of California – Los Angeles.

She is married to Robert Verhulst, a partner with LRV Farms in Prophetstown, and they have four children, Robb and Justin Verhulst and Wes and Jonathon Roemer.

Obituaries Gerard O. Morhardt MOUNT CARROLL – Gerard O. Morhardt, 72, of Mount Carroll, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family, following a short illness.

Gerard was born March 22, 1944, in Woodland Township, rural Mount Carroll, the son of Adam and Catherine (Hall) Morhardt. He attended Mount Carroll High School and graduated with the class of 1963. Gerard married the love of his life, Elaine Becker, in 1964. He and Elaine both worked at Kelly Springfield for a short amount of time before starting their farming career in Milledgeville. They moved to Mount Carroll to farm and raise their family.

Gerard served on the Woodland Township Board

for many years. He enjoyed hunting and managing his farmland. But most of all he loved laughing and joking with his family and many friends. He could put a smile on anyone’s face, and his grandchildren could always put a smile on his.

Gerard will be dearly missed by his wife, Elaine of Mount Carroll; a daughter, Penny (Lenny) Dacanay of Crystal Lake; son, Dennis (Debbra) Morhardt of Savanna; five grandchildren, Travis Morhardt of Sagle, Idaho, Sophi (Brady) Edwards of Savanna, Macaria Dacanay of Chicago, Paige Dacanay of DeKalb, and Erika Dacanay of Crystal Lake; one great-granddaughter, Dawsyn May Edwards of Savanna; his mother-in-law, Marilyn Becker of Mount Carroll; two sisters-in-law, Carol Morhardt of Mount Carroll and Beverly (Jim) Huffman of Morrison; and his brother-in-law, Wayne (Kathy) Becker of Mount Carroll.

Gerard was preceded in

death by his parents, Adam and Catherine; a brother, Gary Morhardt; his fatherin-law, Allan Becker; and a sister-in-law, Colleen Becker.

A celebration of Gerard’s life will be from 1 to 5 p.m.

Sunday, Jan. 17, at Tipton Auction House, 3001 state Route 84, Thomson.

Mildred L. Etnyre

SAVANNA – Mildred A. Etnyre, 97, of Savanna, passed away Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna.

Mildred “Millie� Arlene Dorothy McCue was born Oct. 27, 1919, in Savanna, the eldest child of Thomas G. McCue and Pearl B. (Kahler) McCue. Mildred

attended Chestnut Park School and received the American Legion Award at her eighth grade graduation.

She graduated in 1938 from Savanna High School.

On Dec. 24, 1938, she married Melvin E. Folk.

Surviving is their daughter, Sharon Folk (Henry) Yoeckel of Lanark. On Aug. 18, 1955, Mildred married Daniel M. Etnyre, and upon that date, became the mother of Joan Etnyre (Ted) Bookman of Monument, Colorado, Jack (Mary) Etnyre of Rock Falls, and Sherry Etnyre (Rock) Mekeel of Polo.

Mildred loved yellow roses, sun flowers, fall leaves, gardening, canning, baking, sewing, reading the daily paper, family gatherings, and visiting with her neighbors. She was a member of United Methodist Church in Brookville. In her younger days, she played softball, was on a bowling team, and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Mildred, in former days, lived in Polo,

near Brookville, Chadwick, and most recently in Lanark.

In addition to her four children, she will be deeply missed by her 16 grandchildren; 32 greatgrandchildren; six greatgreat-grandchildren; her sister, Norma Merkel of Chadwick; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel; her parents; a brother in infancy, Thomas George McCue Jr.; her brother and sister-in-law, Virgil (Betty) McCue; her brother and sisterin-law, Ralph (Cecelia) McCue; her brother-inlaw, Harlan Merkel; and a granddaughter in infancy, Julie Mekeel.

Visitation was Tuesday at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll.

MOUNT CARROLL – A year-long celebration of the city’s sesquicentennial will begin with Winter Fest, from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Point Rock Park on Mill Street.

All activities are free, and will include ice skating, music, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and an all-town snowman-making contest.

Big ‘siblings’ wanted for local youth Program gets director, new space, but needs volunteers

ROCK FALLS – Kim Gilpatrick’s family is bigger than just her relatives.

In March 2012, Gilpatrick signed her children up with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Whiteside County mentoring program.

“It’s helped me a lot, because I’m busy all the time,” the single mother said.

Through the program, volunteers, called “bigs,” are matched with children, called “littles,” and spend time with them through community- and schoolbased programs. The Whiteside office has 23 matches, with 24 children on the waiting list.

Gilpatrick’s daughters, Tatum Glenn, 14, and Eden Glenn, 13, still stay in touch with their bigs, Pam Topper and Laci Halverson, respectively. Gilpatrick’s son, Darian Gilpatrick, also went through the program.

In February, Gilpatrick’s youngest son, Rylan Steagall, 8, will mark a year of working with his big, Darren Gilliam.

“He shows me how to build stuff out of wood; we’re working on a car,” Rylan said. “He comes to my basketball games at the YMCA in Sterling.”

Gilliam also has lunch with Rylan at Dillon Elementary School in Rock Falls, through BBBS’ school-based match program. The school program is a commitment of 2 to 4 hours a month, having lunch at the child’s school.

Community-based matches are 6 to 10 hours per month, with the big and little going out in the community or spending time at the big’s home. Overnight visits aren’t allowed.

The need for mentors remains steady, even as the Whiteside office recently moved into new quarters.

Nicki Spears, the chapter’s customer relations specialist, said in September 2014, BBBS opened an office in the Center for Youth, at the old Abiding Word Church building in downtown Sterling.

In the first week of January, the chapter moved into its current office, on the second floor of Wallace School in Sterling.

Danielle Vance of Morrison started about a month ago as the chapter’s director.

“We have communitybased and school-based plus matches; the plus part is that they are allowed to get together at match activities we sponsor, such as plays, musical programs, and others.” she said. “It helps the kids to see other kids are in the program, and the bigs can talk with each other. It’s kind of a support group.”

How are kids referred?

Often, Spears said, parents reach out. At present, they’re accepting children from Morrison schools and Rock Falls elementary schools, and are preparing to go into Prophetstown.

Sterling schools have their own mentoring program, but children in that program also can take part in communitybased matches through BBBS, Spears said.

“We won’t say, ‘No,’ if a kid needs Big Brothers Big Sisters,” she said.

Littles must be between 5 and 14 years old. If a child is in the program before age 14, they can go until they turn 18.

“The younger we get the children, the better,”

Vance said. “The mentor will have a longer period to help the child, and they form a deeper bond and connection.”

The Whiteside program has three volunteers from Dixon, and Vance said her office technically covers Lee, Ogle, and part of Carroll counties.

“We’d love to get into those areas again,” Vance said.

“We would accept littles from those areas, if we had volunteers to mentor them.”

Bigs must be at least 18, have graduated high school, be able to commit at least 2 hours a month for 12 months, and pass five background checks and a thorough interview process.

“We get pretty personal,” Vance said. “We want to make sure the person is OK to be around kids. This is a strong connection between the big and the little.”

Each year, it seems to move faster and faster, with no relief in sight.

Even the break I had while we were closed, I didn’t get nearly half the things done I wanted. I had goals of purging and doing a clean-out at home. Just like when I left the office in 2016, I had a freshly cleaned desk that was organized.

The Young Leaders will be doing their Annual Harvest for All this week.

Yes, we are taking a week to do it, as January is too unpredictable. Be it fog, frozen augers, ice, a blizzard, we never seem to get ideal conditions. Not that we ever expected it to, but you know we like to keep things interesting.

We are hosting an On the Road program with Kevin Rund on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Kevin will be presenting on the IDOT rules and regulations that affect farmers. Medical cards, inspections, interstate

vs intrastate will all be covered. Just like now is a good time to check on the update status of USDOT numbers. What about those Covered Farm Vehicles and what is a Farm Vehicle Driver? We will begin with a lunch at noon, with Kevin’s program to follow.

Illinois Farm Bureau members and their children are encouraged to apply for 71 college scholarships offered by the IAA Foundation, Illinois Farm Bureau’s charitable arm.

The scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $7,500 per year, will be awarded in total of $143,400 for the 2017-2018 school year.

All applicants must be high school seniors accepted for enrollment, or students already enrolled at an accredited college, university or community college. Scholarships are awarded for exceptional

academic ability, leadership and financial need. Previous winners of an IAA Foundation scholarship are eligible to apply again.

DIXON – President Dave Hellmich shared a scary financial health prognosis with his Sauk Valley Community College staff Friday.

Even if the college got all $1.6 million of its funding from the state, it would still face a $469,593 deficit for fiscal year 2017.

The college has projected a little more than $650,000 in state funding. If that’s the case, the budget will be about $1.4 million in the red – with $14.3 million in revenue against $15.7 million in expenditures – and put the fund balance at a shade more than $5 million.

Hellmich and his cabinet are keying on five areas where the belt can be tightened: salaries, benefits, contractual services, materials and supplies, and travel.

“If a position opens up, the norm must be that we will not fill it, until we can rectify this,” he said, gesturing to the breakdown

When asked about layoffs, he pointed out that some part-time staff David Hellmich is already gone, and that when trims are made, parttime staff will be looked at first.

Hellmich said he doesn’t want the day to come that the college lays off a fulltime educator, but that if it comes, the severance will be done respectfully and appreciatively.

“But I can’t promise you there won’t be layoffs,” he said.

West Carroll students have an udderly fun day of learning Prairie Advocate staff

SAVANNA – Students in first grade at West Carroll Primary School learned about both dairy and beef cattle through an Ag in the Classroom program.

During the first part of the presentation, students discovered the difference between beef and dairy cattle. Then the class discussed what all cattle had in common and how they are different from a human.

This was done through a demonstration. A volunteer from each class was “dressed” as a cow, while

their classmates came up with features to make the volunteer more cow-like. Added features included hooves, large ears, a flyswatter tail, an udder, four stomach parts, and a long sandpaper tongue.

After the demonstration, students played Beefo Bingo to teach them about beef byproducts. Almost the entire beef animal can be used to benefit man in some way.

From a typical 1,000-pound steer, 400 pounds is used for beef that we eat; the remaining 600 pounds are used as byproducts. The cattle hides are used for leather

items such as furniture, automobiles, volleyballs, basketballs, and baseball gloves. Beef byproducts are also found in paint, plastics, lubricants, cosmetics, plastics, and rubber.

Agriculture in the Classroom is a program to help students gain a greater awareness of the role of agriculture in the economy and society. Students learn that thousands of farm products are in the world around them – on their plate, in the clothes they wear, in the medicine that makes them well, and in earth-friendly fuels and plastics.

He said staff will use materials and supplies “only when it’s critical,” and that the college will be cognizant of sending only as many people on trips as necessary – if the trip is necessary at all. Perhaps a phone call or Skype conversation will suffice.

“We need to cut from all of these, but materials and supplies has already been cut, and we need supplies to teach,” Hellmich said. “We are not a fat institution in any way, whatsoever.”

Clara is a perfect example of what the college needs: innovative tools via partnerships with community institutions. She and four of her nursing simulator friends came free through grants assisted by CGH Medical Center and KSB Hospital.

DIXON – Tessa Barber is a semester away from being a registered nurse.

Her instructors at Sauk Valley Community College give her high praise, calling her an “advanced beginner.”

In 9 years working at KSB Hospital, she’s seen some things, man.

Yet when “Clara’s” blood pressure kept falling, for no discernible reason, out came a proverbial four-letter word in the nursing community.

“Oh, shoot,” Barber, 37, of Dixon, said.

Just like that, one of Clara’s many missions was accomplished: getting students’ verbal slips out in a simulation, rather than the real world. Clara, who can also become Clarence, with a subtle adjustment or two, is one of five animated manikins Sauk Valley Community College brought in to better educate and test its students, starting in the fall.

Failure is an option, and a beneficial one.

“If I hear those words at a clinical, I grab them by the ear and pull them out,” LPN instructor Christine Vincent said during an unveiling Friday morning. “Those are not things you want to hear from your nurse.”

“That’s why that was such an amazing and important experience,” Barber said.

“It’s horrendously nerveracking, but I find nursing to be like taking pieces of a puzzle and having to put them together to help the

patient.”

All while an instructor is at the controls, able to indiscriminately adjust the patient’s vitals – such as blood pressure.

In each simulation, students go through a checklist, while Clara voices her discomfort. She can speak and groan on her own, but faculty can also speak as Clara through a remote microphone.

“It really gave me that anxiety of being in the room and having to work fast, to move fast and make decisions fast,” said Melissa Meusel, 37, another Dixon resident who teamed up with Barber for the simulation.

She’s in her first semester of her first year.

“Often, they will kill them, and that’s OK,” Vincent said.

“With the wave of a mouse, we can bring them back to life,” lab coordinator Kim Cole said.

The faculty will brainstorm on wrenches, hurdles and projectile vomit they can throw into the mix. Airway problems, fluid in the lungs, faulty dressing. You name the issue, they can likely simulate it.

“You wouldn’t believe the things MacGyver, I mean Kim, can do,” Vincent said.

“They’ll be shocked during, but afterward, they say, ‘That was awesome,’” Cole said. “That’s kind of how deranged nurses are.”

them into the curriculum.

Assistant nursing professor Kayla Gaffey said OB students will also have access to mom and infant animated manikins at CGH Medical Center in Sterling, which also donated one of the college’s animated manikins. CGH and KSB Hospital in Dixon partnered with the college to help land federal Perkins Career Techinical Funding grants, which covered the $93,000 investment.

KSB also supports Area Health Education Centers, which provided $10,000 in grants to buy two of the college’s animated manikins.

Free is a great pricetag for a cash-strapped college. You can’t put a monetary value on the the difference between life and death – especially if you can solve that riddle in a simulation.

“We’re allowing our students to connect theory with actual practice,” Cole said. “You can read it in a book, but until you actually do it, sometimes it doesn’t click. This is allowing us to do that.”

Thank you, thank you, thank you! So many volunteers made so many children happy during the holiday season.

This year at the Carroll County Toys for Tots, we helped more than 450 families enjoy presents and collected more than $3,000.

It takes a lot of work over the course of 3 months, but the amount of caring and compassion that Carroll County has is incredible.

Of course, we would like to thank each and every person who helped out this year, but if we missed somebody we do truly appreciate all of your help. Pearl City 39, Freeport Aquin 34: Tia Clark’s 17 points led all scorers in the game as the Lady Wolves (11-4) edged Aquin (8-8).

Tyra Clark added 12 points for Pearl City. Gwen Heimerdinger added 6 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. The leading scorer for the Lady Bulldogs was Georgia James with 12 points.
