MOUNT CARROLL – A Freeport man convicted of first-degree murder in the death of his wife asked Friday that he be remembered for more than her slaying before being sentenced to life in prison. Morgan D. Hake, 50, was found guilty Sept. 23 of fatally shooting Suzanne Hake three times during an argument at their other home in Lanark on Dec. 5. “Your Honor, I ask for no
mercy, I don’t deserve it. I’m not a killer, but I killed her,” Hake said. “I don’t want to go down, ‘Who’s Morgan Hake? He’s a murderer.’ There’s so much more than that,” he said. Hake said he killed his wife in the heat of the moment, too fast to comprehend what was happening. Mary Lu Johnson, Suzanne’s mother, addressed Morgan’s testimony at trial, when he said she was on Adderall and attacked him first. “Our Suzy would never
have done the vile things she was accused of. That was just a trumpedup story by Morgan Hake a coward,” Johnson said. Johnson also read a statement from Alix Birkner, Suzanne’s eldest daughter. “My husband and I were living in Tennessee, and my mother was planning to move there to help care for a grandbaby. If I am to be honest, my mental and physical well-being are not healthy enough to bring a child into this world because of this incident,” Birkner wrote.
“My mother’s only fault was loving a man who cared for himself more than anyone Suzanne Hake else, including his wife and two daughters. In the end, my mother was deprived of her life because she would not live in the way Morgan Hake wanted her to.” Hannah Hake, Morgan and Suzanne’s eldest daughter, also spoke. “I know every wrong choice has a consequence, and first-degree means life. I’d like my future children to know their grandfather, not because he deserves it, but because I do. I deserve
to be whole again, and so does my little sister,” she said. Abbi, the couple’s Judge Val Gunnarsson youngest daughter, wrote in a statement to the court that people hadn’t seen the loving, stable childhood and teenage years she attributed to her parents. “Those are the sole reasons why I can have a relationship with my father,” she wrote. “My dad is not a murderer. He’s a man who made a terrible mistake in a situation that could’ve been avoided.” State’s Attorney Scott Brinkmeier noted that Hake
has been involved with the criminal justice system since 1988, and that he was on felony probation when the murder was committed. In the end, Judge Val Gunnarsson handed down the maximum sentence. “I don’t believe at all it happened the way Mr. Hake stated it at trial,” Gunnarsson said. “I don’t believe it was premeditated, but it was no self-defense.” Before sentencing, Gunnarson dismissed a motion by Hake’s attorneys, Daniel P. Dalton and Nate Nieman, seeking to reverse the verdict or order a new trial. Hake and his attorneys have 60 days to file an appeal.

Charitable organizations ask for more funding from county BY TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate
MOUNT CARROLL – The Carroll County Board has been asked by charitable organizations to increase their funding from the county in the 2016-17 budget. Among those requesting more money is the county’s 708 Board for Lutheran Social Services of Illinois. The nonprofit LSSI provides
programs including Comprehensive Community Based Youth Services, Foster Care (children and familes), Sterling Group Home (mental health), and substance abuse services. “We used to serve Carroll County with our home care for seniors, but that program was part of cuts due to the state’s budget issues,” said LSSI Special Projects Associate Tryg Jensen.

Obituaries Edward L. Ludwig
FORRESTON – Edward L. Ludwig, 96, of Forreston, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016, in Manor Court at Liberty Village in Freeport. Mr. Ludwig was born Aug. 12, 1920, near Forreston, the son of Joe and Fannie (Kruse) Ludwig. Ed attended West Branch Country School, and later graduated from Forreston High School. Ed was a proud Army veteran. He served with the 96th Infantry Division in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Ed was a lifelong Forreston area farmer. Mr. Ludwig married Johanna Frei in 1947. She died in January 1972. He married Hortense “Pat” Faulkner Jenkins on March 10, 1973. She died Dec. 9, 2013. Ed became a wonderful father to Linda Jenkins and Larry Jenkins. Ed was an active member of Forreston Reformed Church. He served as an elder and served on Consistory. He also was a member of the Ogle County Farm Bureau. Ed was very dedicated to his church, family, God, and to his rural farm values. Mr. Ludwig is survived by his son, Larry Jenkins; and sisters-in-law,

STERLING – Halo Branded Solutions plans to consolidate its local operations in a new building at Meadowlands Business Park. The Sterling Industrial Development Commission met Monday to approve the sale of the land near the corner of LeFevre Road and Lynn Boulevard to Halo. The new site would be close to its current headquarters at 1980 Industrial Drive. In addition to combining its Rock Falls distribution center with corporate headquarters, the new site will provide more space for the rapidly growing promotional products company. “When we combine everything in the new building, it should increase
our available space by 50 percent,” said Terry McGuire, senior vice president of marketing at Halo. “We really wanted everything under one roof, and this was an opportunity to do that.” The distribution center at 809 Antec Road has 57,000 square feet, and the headquarters has 40,000 square feet. The new building will provide about 157,000 square feet, and the 21 acres of land would allow for future expansion. If everything goes as planned, the building will be up in 2 years, which is when Halo’s lease would expire, McGuire said. Halo employs 257 people between the two sites, and the company is planning for the continued growth of its local workforce. Its employee base has grown more than 60 percent in the last 5 years. “We’re in a very

llinois’ budget crisis has been going on for years. A 4-year temporary income tax increase (2011-14), approved by then-Gov. Pat Quinn and fellow Democrats in the Legislature, did surprisingly little to alleviate it. The 2014 election of Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, followed by his tussle with the Democraticcontrolled Legislature, dominated by House Speaker Michael Madigan, sparked a yearlong budget impasse followed by the half-year stopgap budget
agreed to in late June. And yet, living in a state hit hard by billions of dollars in deficits, debt, and unfunded pension obligations, most Illinoisans say the state’s budget stalemate hasn’t affected them. The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, based at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, recently conducted a poll of 1,000 registered Illinois voters. It found that 62 percent said the budget mess hadn’t affected them one bit, while 34 percent said they had been personally affected. Of those feeling budgetary pain, 18 percent said it had cost them their jobs (or

Chicagoans narrowly avoided their third teachers strike in 4 years. The Chicago Teachers Union, or CTU, took negotiations to the 11th hour Oct. 10, injecting further chaos into the lives of nearly 400,000 Chicago schoolchildren. The union offered a long list of reasons for the potential strike. Wreaking havoc on communities across the city requires lengthy rationalization. But at each turn of contract negotiations for the past 22 months, the union refused to budge on one sticking point: the pension pickup. Chicago Public Schools, or CPS, finally caved on that issue and reached a tentative agreement with CTU.

College faces a $1.9 million budget deficit for the 2017 fiscal year, and the state has paid only about one-third ($525,000 in stopgap budget funds) of what the college hopes to receive. Trustees who met recently talked about taking actions that would impact students and taxpayers. Scholarship athletes, dualcredit students, and Sauk Scholars could find themselves
receiving thousands of dollars less in financial support from the college. In addition, the board plans to ask local property taxpayers for more money. Its levy adjustments would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about 40 cents more a year. Meanwhile, the Lee-Ogle Transportation System, which provides more than 75,000 rides a year to area residents for medical, employment and educational purposes, will shorten its hours of operation because the state hasn’t paid the agency what it owes. t has just been a week since the Cubs won the World Series. What a game that was! It is no secret that I am a huge baseball fan, as well as a huge sports fan. I have my grandpa to thank for my love of sports. I would spend a lot of time visiting my grandparents, and the TV was always on some sport. I would watch golf, tennis, bowling, and of course all the “regular” sports like baseball, football, and basketball. He and my grandma took me to my first Cubs game for my birthday when I was 10. Isn’t that what every little girl asks for as a birthday gift? Back in those days, we also got to attend a Cubs game in junior high as an award for being on honor roll. Yes, the school did that for us. I have so many fond memories of the Cubs. While it wasn’t necessarily of them winning back then, it was the love of the game. Rick Sutcliffe, a pitcher for the Cubs in the 1980s, had a Saturday morning show where he showed and taught how to pitch. The summer of 1989, I lived in Decatur with my aunt and uncle to babysit my cousin while they worked. I would create my own scorecards on notebook paper and keep the score for the games. This is back when Wrigley had no lights and all games were played during the day. Obviously my love for the game stems way back. I couldn’t wait to call my grandpa and get his thoughts on the game! I also can’t believe this was the year I came up on the list to get season tickets and I didn’t buy them! When would I have had time for that!?! The future looks bright for the Cubs, and I can’t wait for the spring! This sport that I have loved for so long, I am also thankful that Tucker has grown to love the game. He keeps telling me the countdown to the first game of the high school season in March! It seems to be that time of the year when burglaries become more frequent. Just recently I have read about a number of car break-ins throughout the county. With the holidays coming up, it

We do get that federal grant, and it’s not our fault it’s being held up.” Board member Rodney Fritz reminded the board of an earlier taxing rate policy which prevented rates from declining. “At some time we should build that back into their taxing rate,” Fritz said. “Back a few years ago when we had that cushion built into the tax rate, we could move revenues out because we weren’t taxing at the maximum rate. And then when the real estate values dropped, we just changed the rate of the levies to keep the revenues the same for the organizations they feed.” A motion and a board vote is required for amending line items in the proposed
budget, and the board will vote on each of the motions at its December meeting. In other business, Imel told the board LiHEAP is taking applications for its winter energy assistance programs. “Funds generated by the federal government are starting to move a little bit,” Imel said. “Not the state, but the federal government is generating a little more money for LiHEAP now.” He encouraged households in need of energy assistance to call Bonnie Norman at the Tri-County Opportunities office at 815-273-2240 as soon as possible. Carroll County Clerk Brian Woessner told the board early voting was proceeding smoothly, with just over 250 early ballots filed. The board also discussed and approved a contract with the Carpenters Union. Approval of that contract is the third in a series of contracts that need approval to be included in the county’s final budget. The next County Board meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 17 in the small courtroom of the Carroll County Courthouse.

MOUNT CARROLL – Most anniversary celebrations last a day. Mount Carroll’s will last all year. After all, it’s not every day you turn 150. Plans are still tentative for the sesquicentennial
celebration, but Michelle Fossett, with the Mount Carroll Mount Up Committee, told city council members recently that “something is planned every month. We kick it off on Jan. 1.” Fossett spoke at the council’s regular meeting Oct. 26 about plans for events and celebrations to mark the community’s 150th anniversary. Among proposed activities are a Winter Fest in January at Point Rock Park, an art
tour in April, and a car cruise in June. Fossett asked the council if they would have a declaration at their Feb. 14 meeting. Mayor Carl Bates said, “I like the idea of supporting it. It is our community.” The council also discussed what, if any, financial support to extend to the celebration. While Fossett mentioned $500, Alderman Mike Risko asked her to get a list of costs and submit it to the council.
Service Veterans Association will participate, and students will perform patriotic music. n Sterling: A service begins at 11 a.m. at Sterling High School’s Centennial Auditorium, 1608 Fourth Ave. In the afternoon, Sterling American Legion members will visit vets at local nursing homes. Applebee’s, 3920 E. Lincolnway, will serve free meals from 10 a.m. to midnight to all veterans and active duty military with a military ID.

MORRISON – Do you want to build a snowman? Then be a jolly ol’ soul and create a tabletop snowman for the Morrison Chamber of Commerce’s Decorated Snowman Silent Auction during this year’s Christmas Walk. “Similar to a festival of trees, simply create a snowman using any nonperishable materials you like and decorate it,� said Chamber Board and Christmas Walk Committee member, Katie Selburg. “Wood or plastic, flat or three-dimensional. ... Be creative and have fun!� Each snowman must fit on a table top space of 18�x18� and be no taller than 2 feet high. You must provide everything you need to decorate your snowman, and using lighting is encouraged. Once completed, snowmen should be delivered to Wells Fargo Bank, 100 E. Lincolnway, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 28 or Nov. 29. Silent auction bidding on the snowmen will be from Nov. 30 through the night of the Christmas Walk, at 7:30 Dec. 3. Minimum bids start at $20. River Bend Middle School seventh-graders attended Morrison Institute of Technology’s first 2016-17 Junior High Technology Day on Friday. More than 70 students from the Fulton school participated in five hands-on activities focused on the principles of engineering, including working in groups to build the tallest structure using limited resources (newspaper and tape); using solid modeling software to design a 3D model of a whistle; creating and testing a trial mix of concrete; designing and testing a bridge; and exploring commonly used manufacturing processes. At the end of the day, students received a prototype of the whistle that had bee printed on one of Morrison Tech’s 3D printers. Morrison Tech has planned five more Technology Days. Nearly 400 seventh-graders from 8 area schools are planning to participate.

For the fourth time in 8 years, Eastland will be making the trip south to Normal for the IHSA Class 1A state volleyball tournament. The Cougars earned that opportunity after rolling to a 25-16, 25-8 victory against Schaumburg Christian on Saturday at the Christian Liberty Academy Supersectional in Arlington Heights. “I am extremely pleased with the win,” first-year head coach Mallory Clements said. “We came out a little nervous in the first set, but we quickly recovered, and then played very well in the second set. LANARK – In front of a raucous home crowd, the Eastland Cougars controlled the first set and rallied to win the second, beating Galena 25-16, 25-23 to claim the sectional title and advance back to the supersectional. Trailing by as much as 15-8 in the second set, Eastland fought back. The Cougars chipped away at the lead at first, but once momentum was on their side, they racked up point after point, with Makenzie Fink getting kills for nine of Eastland’s last 10 points. “I said we just need to keep calm,� Fink said. “No lead is too big. We can always come back. Never get down on yourself.� Fink’s 19th kill of the match ended it, a perfect pass from Gabby Snyder leading to a perfect set from Ashley Beyers leading to a back-row spike from Fink that Galena had no hope of returning. Hitting errors plagued Eastland early in the second set, with four Cougars error in Galena’s first five points. Even when Eastland began to sort out those mistakes, Galena hitter Katie Furlong came through with back-toback kills. “We were trying to get in system a little more,� Galena coach Dennis Wills said. “In the first set, we were just totally haywire, didn’t have any options,

When you’ve got Makenzie Fink and Ashley Beyers playing like that, you can’t give them free balls.� Furlong finished with 11 kills, and her last put the Pirates ahead 16-9 in the second set – but Eastland kept her in check the rest of the way. On the other side of the net, Fink was just getting started. “I think our rotations just happened to line up where I needed them to be,� Eastland coach Mallory Clements said. “I did the rotations in the sense of matchups. I wanted Fink in the front row with their big hitter in the back row. I think once we got our
rotations around in the middle of that set, that boosted our momentum.� A Mac Byer block cut the Galena lead to 17-12, and Beyers had back-to-back kills for the next two points. Soon enough, Eastland was right back in it – and so were the Cougars’ fans. “Getting a kill was electrifying,� Katie Krogman said. “It was the greatest feeling ever. I can only imagine for everyone else how it felt. It was just a great atmosphere.� The first set saw the Cougars jump out to a quick lead and never look back. Fink had a kill to put Eastland ahead 11-4, then kills from Kristen Calvert
and Morgan Wills got the Pirates within six. But Eastland went on another run, getting three kills from Beyers and having Byer take came of an overpass. Fink ended that set with a kill. “We had a really good game plan going in, and I think we executed it perfectly,� Krogman said. “Everyone knew their place. I had a job, Fink had a job, and we killed it. We couldn’t have run it more perfect.� Eastland will move on to the Christian Liberty Academy Supersectional to face Schaumburg Christian at 3 p.m. Saturday in Arlington Heights. LANARK – Despite the fact that they’re the reigning Class 1A state champions, the Eastland Cougars are incorporating a lot of new faces into the lineup who are still learning how to win in November. Tuesday’s 1A Eastland Sectional semifinal match against Durand was a big learning experience, as the Cougars were pushed to a third set before eventually prevailing 25-16, 19-25, 25-20. Eastland (27-9-1) pretty muched cruised through the first set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead on four Makenzie Fink kills, and an Ashley Beyers tip-kill and ace serve. MENDOTA – The Sterling Golden Warriors were right there in Saturday night’s 3A Mendota Supersectional, matching defending 2A state champion Bloomington Central Catholic spike for spike for nearly an entire set with a trip to the state tournament at stake. But after the Saints won that first set, the Warriors had no answers to the BCC onslaught in the second set, and Sterling saw its season come to an end in the Elite Eight for the second time in three seasons with a 25-22, 25-12 loss. The Warriors (32-6-1) matched the 2010 team for the second-most wins in program history, behind only the 34-win squad in 2012. But they came up one step short of advancing to their first-ever trip to Redbird Arena in Normal. “We’re proud of the kids, and that was my message to them [after the match],” coach Dale Dykeman said. “It sucks to lose, it really stings, but once that goes away, they’re going to be awfully proud of what they accomplished.” But immediately after the match, it was impossible for the Warriors to imagine the sting disappearing. Seniors shared hugs with each other, then with their other teammates as friends and family came down from the stands to be the next ones in line to console them. “To sit down and set goals, everyone was so dedicated to this team, worked so hard for this team, goes out of their way to be there for each other,” senior Kaylee Martin said. “We’re there for each other, and it makes it really easy to go out there

We’re one of four teams to ever make it this far.” It started out well for the Warriors. Senior Mya Pearson opened the match with a kill, and another Pearson kill after three Martin kills put the Warriors up 5-3. BCC (31-5) came back to take leads of 13-7, 14-8 and 15-9, but Sterling wasn’t about to give in. Martin had kills for three more Warrior points, then a Garcia spike off the BCC block cut the deficit to 16-13. Another Garcia kill, then a BCC error and a Pearson slam got Sterling within 19-18, then a Martin kill and another BCC error followed a kill and an ace by the Saints to make it 21-20. Miranda Williams stuffed a spike to answer a McKahl English kill, and it was 22-21 Saints. But BCC got a kill from Bailey Coffman and a tip-kill from Maddie Malinowski, then answered

Two hitting errors briefly gave Durand life at 23-20, but a Beyers tip-kill and a Fink ace finished things off. “We didn’t come with the same energy in the third set, so I told everybody we just needed to have fun and get back to playing like we did in the first set,” said Fink, who also had four assists and 11 digs. “It was all about desire; obviously we wanted to win, but we had to play like it and just go as hard as we could to make it happen.” Beyers added 32 assists, 12 kills, 2 blocks and 13 digs for Eastland, and Snyder led the defense with 24 digs. Krogman finished with four assists and 14 digs, and Byer and Sage Walrath spiked three kills each, with Byer serving seven points. That was the key rotation

ball to hit the floor when I was serving. I’ve been working on serving hard and being aggressive, because it can be a vital part of the game for us.” Kaite Asche had 11 kills, and McKenzie Damon added nine kills for Durand. Marissa Kelsy had 18 assists, nine points and three aces, and Alyssa Brauer added three blocks and a kill. Jaci Damon (8 digs) and Kaitlyn Marquardt (7 digs) led the back-row defense for the Bulldogs, who lose only one player to graduation and will use this as a learning experience. For the Cougars, it’s yet another instance of finding another gear to pull out a postseason victory when their backs were against the all. “I think it comes down to focus and confidence,” Beyers said. “We just keep each other positive so we don’t let the pressure factor into our play.”

State should stop picking up tab for districts’ promises t
But in a state where high property taxes are forcing families from their homes, it’s a choice districts must find the courage to make. The pickup is a massive benefit. And it’s not fair to taxpayers. An Illinoisan working in the private sector would need to have nearly $1.5 million saved up to receive the same retirement benefit as the average recently retired career teacher in Chicago, who contributed less than $30,000 to his pension. It’s not fair to kids, either. Billions of dollars that could be directed to better libraries, better curriculum and better pay for outstanding teachers – to create a better Illinois – is instead being dumped into a broken system. The defined-benefit pension system as a whole is broken. The teachers’ pension fund is approaching insolvency. Younger teachers are paying into a system from which they may never see a benefit. Older teachers are trapped, unable to take what they’ve contributed with them if they decide to change career paths. The deal CPS reached with CTU preserved the pension pickup for all current teachers, whose median salary hovers around $78,000. New teachers starting in 2017 will pay the full pension contribution, but will receive two raises to make up for the benefit change. The union argued removing this perk was the same as a pay cut. It should apply that logic to the tax hikes required to pay for the perk. The way Illinois navigates teacher pensions is bizarre. Instead of teachers contributing the fair employee share to their own pensions, the district is on the hook. And instead of the district paying the employer’s share of the contribution, the state is usually on the hook. So local taxpayers contribute what teachers should pay. And state taxpayers contribute what districts should be paying. In fact, CPS is the only school district in Illinois paying the employer share. Leaders often say that’s unfair. And they’re right, but for the wrong reasons. The state should not be paying for these benefits
in any school district. Why should Illinoisans across the state be paying for Chicago politicians’ bad deals? Or those of any other local leader? The system needs to change. The state should stop picking up the tab for the promises of local districts. A 2014 Illinois Policy Institute report showed the state would immediately save more than $750 million by making local districts shoulder the costs for their own teacher pensions. Of course, the state should not be in the business of hiking local property taxes. They’re among the highest in the nation. Districts need to lower costs for homeowners. How? End the pickups. Nearly 500 districts would see a net savings by ending teacher pension pickups and starting to pay the employer share of pension contributions, according to data from the Illinois State Board of Education. Property taxes would fall. Local leaders would be made accountable for local decisions. And state taxpayers would stop footing the bill for outrageous contracts in faraway lands. Such a seismic shift could spur teachers unions to strike. But if communities stand tall, everyone will benefit.
