Losers are winners with wellness program LANARK – Win With Wellness, a communitybased wellness initiative aimed at helping people live healthy lives through better food choices and regular exercise, has helped more than 150 health-seekers in Carroll and Stephenson counties in a little more than a year. Thirty-five of them are involved in two Take Off Pounds Sensibly groups, or TOPS, in Savanna and Lanark. Healthy eating behaviors are encouraged through paid memberships in the Taking Off Pounds Sensibly, a support group for adults who want to improve their health and lose weight. Dr. Jennifer Aurand, a licensed clinical psychologist at FHN for 11 years, said the program, initiated in June 2015, is a joint effort of the Carroll and Stephenson County Health Departments, FHN, and the National Center for Rural Health Professions and Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford. Through this partnership, grants have been awarded to 12 area TOPS groups to get established and help people with weight loss and improving health by focusing on improvement, rather than perfection, and ongoing support and accountability for lifelong health. Membership costs
are covered for 2 years through the Winning With Wellness program. Alice Engelkins, 62, is chapter leader of the Savanna Fitness Center TOPS group. Started in January, the chapter has 15 regular members: 2 men and 13 women. The group lost a total of 100 pounds in just the first 2 months, and have lost an additional 137 pounds since. “We didn’t have a lot of options for weight loss programs here in Carroll County. Mark Klein, the owner of The Answer Fitness Club, was instrumental in bringing the program here, and has offered his facility for our meetings,” said Engelkins. She said the TOPS program has worked better than any other program she’s experienced. “A lot of people in my age group have probably been on a weight loss journey at one point or another. I’ve tried all the other programs. They tell you what to do, what to eat. But when you stop, you gain it all back, and maybe more!” Engelkins said. “TOPS is not regimented like the others. It teaches you how to make your life better, how to be healthier, no matter what weight your goal is. It’s a personal journey. You have to be ready for it. You have to be willing to make the changes to keep you accountable.” Engelkins said through the health department, there are many resources to take advantage of,

The input from other members is very helpful. We all have our own issues as to why we’re overweight. But we help each other, we pick up tips along the way.” An employee at Sullivan’s Foods in Savanna, she acknowledged the tremendous support the store has offered their employees and customers. They supplied an experienced personal trainer who took the group around the store, explaining better ways to shop, better eating options, and more. “My goal at this age was to get healthy. Learn how to eat better and take care of myself. I want to be around for my 16 grandchildren! In the process, I have learned how to eat well, how to exercise, how to core strengthen, I’ve joined the gym, and have gotten all kinds of support. There’s a lot to figure out, but I’m not done living. I’ve lost 35 pounds so far, hit a few plateaus, but am pleased overall.” Taunya Kuberski of Lanark is the president of the TOPS group in Lanark that formed just a month ago. She said there are about 10 people that attend the meetings regularly, but there are over 20 who weigh in and still participate in the program.

According to the 2016 Illinois Youth Survey: 32% of 8th graders, 44% of 10th graders and 60% of 12th graders in Carroll County reported that they drank alcohol in the past year. Only 54% of 8th graders, 48% of 10th graders and 41% of 12th graders reported that THEIR PARENTS have talked with them about alcohol, and 82% of 8th graders, 79% of 10th graders and 74% of 12th graders report their PARENTS have CLEAR rules about underage drinking and drug use. MAKE SURE YOU ARE ONE OF THEM. Many teens and adults think a “LITTLE ALCOHOL” can’t hurt. Unfortunately, teens in Carroll County are drinking a LOT of alcohol and engage in high risk or “BINGE DRINKING.” Make sure your teens school year is healthy, safe and alcohol free. And remember, your teens are watching what YOU DO. Never provide alcohol or places for teens to party – it is unhealthy and illegal. Not only is it illegal to provide alcohol and places for teens to PARTY under Illinois Social Host Laws, but it is harmful to your teens’ developing BRAIN. Make sure the lights stay on for YOUR celebrations.

The Friends of the Lanark Library want to extend a hearty thank you for the fantastic support of our Labor Day weekend unique “Pie on the Porch” event to support our Community Library. This project is always filled with fun and flavor for all involved. Many hands are necessary to bake and serve so many and to make the day successful. More than 70 pies created the wonderful selection of home-cooked choices and tastes from 23 different cooks. By early afternoon Saturday, every piece had been sold. Several new pie eaters visited this growing, popular event. Apparently, good news continues to travel as even more guests arrived from neighboring communities. After attending the “Save Our Shelter” meeting, I signed up to help scoop and clean at the Heartland Pet Welfare shelter. I had been in the shelter previously, and adopted an older cat from HPW in January, so had a small familiarity with their operations. But I was still anxious about volunteering! Now, I’ve been there twice to scoop litter boxes, sweep, and perform some other needed physical chores. I worked with an experienced volunteer who helped with any questions or uncertainties I had. FREEPORT — CONTACT of Northern Illinois will be offering training class for Helpline volunteers. An informational meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, in the VOICES board room, 1401 Crestwood Ave. in Freeport. Training classes prepare volunteers to assist troubled callers by listening,
providing referrals and intervening in crisis. Classes are informative and interesting and are held in a welcoming and fun atmosphere. Upon completion of the class and internship hours, volunteers will receive three credit hours from Highland Community College that can be converted to CPDU’s for teachers.

Mike Smiddy will always be here fighting for us, and I think folks better think long and hard before casting their ballot. He’s an independent guy that doesn’t take orders from anyone but his constituents. He may not say what people want to hear, but he always gives you the honest truth. Granny Rose dog training classes for all breeds, mixes Prairie Advocate staff
DIXON — Agility, obedience and tracking classes for you and your favorite dog start soon at the Granny Rose K-9 Enrichment Center. The next agility class sessions start Sept. 19, obedience and ring-ready novice obedience starts Sept. 20, and puppy classes start Sept. 22. And a new tracking class will be offered on Sept. 24, a
6-week course. “Our training facility welcomes all breeds and mixes. We offer classes at all levels of obedience, household manners, rally, agility, conformation and more,” said Mark Knie, president of the Granny Rose Animal Shelter. “We are not a ‘one size fits all’ facility. Our instructors use varying training methods and techniques to best achieve the goals of
each individual class, and to enrich the experience between you and your dog. He said the facility can assist you and your dog in a variety of ways, from house breaking and socialization of your puppy, to advanced skills for those wishing to compete at the highest levels. The Granny Rose K-9 Enrichment Center, 613 River Lane in Dixon, is a 13,500 square foot facility
that offers over 10,000 square feet of Astroturf working area plus a nonskid rubber matted area. The building is both heated and cooled for year-round training for every discipline that area dog owners wish to participate in. MOUNT CARROLL — The public is invited to Step Back in Time during a free open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Oakville Complex of the Carroll County Historical Society. The complex is located just off Timber Lake Road and adjacent to the Oakville Cemetery in rural Mount Carroll. Open for tours will be five historic buildings: the brick Oakville School, the Henry Weitzel and
Peter Hay log cabins, an early granary, an authentic blacksmith shop, and a recently acquired “twoholer” outhouse. The Carroll County Historical Society continues to preserve this complex as a tribute to our hardy forefathers who first established the Oakville community. Visitors are welcome to see what life was like when the prairies were first settled by white men. Donations are welcome.

MORRISON — Odell Public Library and the Odell Public Library Friends’ group is readying for its annual Book and Bake Sale, from from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, in the Community Room. Odell will be accepting gently used books beginning Monday, Sept. 19 thru Monday, Oct. 31. Anne Frame, library board member, said all genres are needed: westerns, mysteries, romance, espionage, sci-fi, biography, history, travel, religion, gardening, health, and cooking. Children’s books, such as storybooks and pre-readers, and books suitable for all elementary grade ages plus pre-teen are also needed. Books may be
hardcover or paperback. “Please share with Odell those books that have been read and are no longer wanted. Search the shelves in your homes. That discarded book may become someone else’s favorite read,” Frame said. “Ask your children to clean out their outgrown books. The proceeds from the resale of these books will enable new books for both adults and children to be purchased.” The library asks that no magazines, encyclopedias, textbooks, moldy or dirty books be brought to the library. am done! Done typing up the activities we, as a county, have done for the last year for the annual Illinois Farm Bureau PEARS reports. Now, each report is judged with IFB staff and other managers. We are graded on how we do. I have always found this a little off. I think we should base what we do as a county, and how we meet the needs of our county, not compared to the other counties. With 102 counties in the state, we all do things a little different. Certain programs work better in different areas. We are really a quite diverse state when you look at it. Last week I had the chance to be a part of a mini Women Changing the Face of Agriculture seminar at Highland Community College for our local ladies in FFA and ag in high school. It was great to see a room full of students looking to explore a career in the ag industry. I spoke on how I didn’t choose ag, it chose me. I grew up on a farm, but had no desire at all to be
in agriculture. I envisioned myself in downtown Chicago as a CPA. It dawned on me as I was talking, I began my career with Farm Bureau 20 years ago. WOW! I have really been around nearly that many years. Another one of the questions those of us on the panel answered was how we balance work life, family, and other commitments. I honestly have no idea how I do it, but somehow I get it down. As I type this, I have been up since 5:30 to fit in a workout, worked a full day, did some football volunteer stuff, attended the high school volleyball game, and now I am working at 9:30 after only eating supper about 20 minutes ago. That is only one night of the week. I know tomorrow will start off just as early and probably end just as late. If it weren’t for google calendar of my phone with every commitment being a different color, I would have no idea where I am going, and when. Flexibility is key in my position and I am lucky to have it. It is a huge

This year we added two new pedal pulls, one at Lake Carroll, and then also Chadwick Days, which made a comeback. Historical Society hosts open house, community forum Prairie Advocate staff
SAVANNA — An opportunity to provide input for planning for the Savanna History Museum and Cultural Center will take place at an open house and community forum from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Museum, 406 Main St. in downtown Savanna. The forum will be facilitated by Gisele Hamm, manager of MAPPING the Future of Your Community, Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs, at Western Illinois University. Hamm said the purpose of the event, which is open to Savanna Historic Society members and the public, is to showcase the investment in the organization and the facility, and provide an update on new events and solicit feedback from the community for future planning. “The museum is an asset to Savanna and the region and has the potential to serve an even greater
role in the community. Saturday, September 24th at 2:00pm 406 Main Street An entertaining program, “Showboats on the Mississippi”A showboat was a barge that resembled a long, flat roofed house that housed a form of theater, from melodramas to vaudeville. Wright, well known in the area for his Gallery of Civil War Soldiers at the museum also has broad knowledge of riverboats and their impact on the river towns of the Mississippi. The program promises history, music and a few surprises as Wright will be assisted by Scott Law, Max Miller, Skip Schwerdtfeger, Dean Wright, and Ann Zink. An avid collector, Wright has on display over 100 life sized mannequins dressed in authentic Civil War dress at the museum. He has also built several large model riverboats. His rendition of the Sultana, the steamboat that suffered the greatest maritime disaster in American history, is complete with a visual display of survivors and of those who perished. MORRISON — The Children’s Art Preservation Association’s 22nd year of painting Morrison’s downtown, is set for this weekend, Saturday and Sunday. This year’s event will showcase 2,000 squares for families and individuals to paint, in addition to a great line up of food vendors and musical performers for the participants’ listening pleasure. Registration begins at noon Saturday, and supplies picked up at a new location, in the drive next to the American Legion, 306 East Main St. “At supply pickup, each participant will receive five bottles of paint — red, yellow, blue, white and
black — one narrow brush for lining and one wide brush for filling, chalk for sketching, cups, stirrers and instructions for mixing colors, an event t-shirt and giveaway goodies from sponsors,” said Paint the Town Committee Chairman John Martin. “We request that artists do not bring their own paint, unless it is event paint left over from previous years. We have carefully tested our paints to find a product that will stay for a matter of weeks or months on the street and is still eco-friendly. Music continues from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the west end pocket park by the Morrison Chamber of Commerce and across the street from the Post Office, with singer and American Idol contestant Alex Fischbach. Also walking down Main and Market Streets from 1 to 4 p.m. will be the Mariachi Cuerdas Mexican band. John Janssen, country music singer, will conclude the day’s entertainment from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the corner of Main and Genesee. “Both professional and amateur musicians perform during our event, and a wide variety of music styles and rhythms are featured to encourage an appreciation for the diversity of the arts,” said Martin. “In addition, our street performers ensure that no matter where the painters are, participants are within eye and earshot of music, a magician, balloon artist or other entertainers.” Food vendors will also be available throughout the day, including walking tacos and root beer floats by the MHS Track Team; baked potatoes and dill pickles by the Boy Scouts; ribeyes, chicken and hamburgers by Wiersema’s; egg rolls, crab rangoon, and chicken fingers by Thai by Kai; pies and ice cream by the Morrison Historical Society; Pop’s Kettle Corn; pulled pork by Co-Z Corner; shaved ice and
drinks by the Chill Shack; brats, pork chops, hot dogs and drinks by the Kiwanis; and caramel apples by the Morrison Lions Club. The fun continues on Sunday, when the streets remain closed for visitors to enjoy the completed artwork on the streets and windows. “We invite everyone back to Morrison’s downtown on Sunday to enjoy additional festivities,” said Martin. “And new this year, an Arts and Crafts Show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.” The Pancakes and Paintings breakfast will be served from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of Main and Genesee. Pancakes, sausage, juice, and coffee will be offered by the MHS wrestlers. Additional food vendors – Thai by Kai and Pop’s Kettle Corn – will be available after the breakfast. Registration for Paint the Town can be made online, in person, or by mail. Squares can be purchased online or at City Hall until 4 p.m. on Thursday, and registration by mail must be received no later than Thursday as well. Early bird pricing through the 15th is $13 per square in person or by mail, or $14.71 online. Registrations will not be accepted Friday, in person or online. As of March 1, Lifescape Community Services began offering services as a Care Coordination Unit and Adult Protective Services Program. These programs provide services in Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside Counties. The Care Coordination Unit provides comprehensive services to those age 60 and above through the provision of evaluations to determine eligibility for community services to help seniors stay in their homes with community based services such as in-home workers, emergency home response services and referrals for additional services to meet the client’s individual needs. They also provide evaluations for placement for anyone 18 and older for rehab, skilled care, or a long-term care facility, and comprehensive case management. These services are provided at no charge. Students find penalties can be stiff for bullying, even if it’s not done in school STERLING – Expelled. For 2 years. That’s the punishment three Sterling High School students must endure after making threats on social media to harm other students at the school. The trio made the threat, or threats – district officials have declined to elaborate – over summer break. The school district on Aug. 3 reported the matter to the Sterling Police Department, which investigated, then turned its findings over to the Whiteside County State’s Attorney Office, which is determining if charges will be filed. The students are out for this school year, as well as the 2017-18 school year, evidence of the severity of the threats. “This is the first time in my 9-year tenure that we’ve expelled a student for this length of time, which is the maximum allowed by the Illinois School Code,”
Superintendent Tad Everett said. In related news, Senate Bill 100 kicks in soon. It requires school districts to give students ample opportunity to correct their behavior before they’re suspended or expelled. Zero-tolerance practices no longer are tolerated. “SB100 does not say that we cannot discipline students,” Everett said. “The process by which we discipline students is just different. Based on the severity of [these students’] words and actions, we were able to say that, upon threats being made, it was an appropriate course of action.” The new law requires schools to first exhaust all means of intervention before suspending students for more than 3 days, and to thoroughly document all disciplinary action taken and interventions made. It also requires school districts to afford students ample opportunities to succeed when they return
to school. The law takes effect Thursday, but districts have been preparing since Gov. Bruce Rauner signed it about a year ago. The Regional Office of Education has a Safe Schools program for students who are expelled, through which they can get their act together and, eventually, rejoin their district with the hopes of graduating. But that district must recommend the student, which has not yet happened in the case of the three Sterling students.
Who keeps tabs?
Most Sauk Valley districts with 1-to-1 initiatives – a computer for each student – including Sterling, rely on those filters to police activity on the districts’ devices when they leave campus. Chadwick-Milledgeville, which implemented its 1-to-1 initiative in 2013,

uses filters that alert the administrator when “threatening or inappropriate strings of words are used,” Superintendent Tim Schurman said. “When the safety and
well-being of a student or staff member are threatened, that’s where the district draws the line between the issue being a school district concern and a law enforcement matter.”

Theft, arson, fighting, hazing, alcohol, drugs and weapons are among the words that will trigger a red flag. Even the phrase “tripping a false alarm” alerts administrators. West Carroll CUSD 314 Superintendent Adam Brumbaugh said the district has revised its handbook, given the advancements in technology and the demands of Senate Bill 100. “Because we are a 1 to 1 school district for grades 5 through 12, I feel like we are constantly looking at technology and how to effectively use it, while at the same time keeping our students safe,” said Brumbaugh. He, too, said the threshhold of when an incident goes from being a school district matter to a law enforcement matter, is when laws are violated. “We will get the police involved if we find evidence of a law being broken, such as underage drinking, child pornography, vandalism, etc., through social media or other forms of technology as a part of one of our investigations,” Brumbaugh
said.
Social media is not private
Everett thinks students have a misperception that social media comments are protected by the First Amendment. “Social media is a First Amendment right, as long as you are not negatively impacting the environment of our building,” he said. “Why would you write anything in social media that you wouldn’t want on the front page of the newspaper?” And there’s no difference between bullying someone in person, or from behind a keyboard. “Whether it’s via online or not, it’s bullying, harrassment and intimidation,” Everett said. “We don’t do a lot of deciphering between cyberbullying and bullying. You’re just bullying.”
Positive behavior incentives
West Carroll doesn’t officially use the Positive Behavior Incentive System, but at the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year, when Brumbaugh was the new high school principal,
he presented his plans to emphasize and encourage a new morale-boosting initiative called “The Thunder Way.” “Doing things The Thunder Way means students are being respectful, responsible, and ready to learn,” Brumbaugh said. “By posting positive behavior expectations and rewarding those behaviors, teachers, administrators, and staff at all schools, we expected to see a decrease in discipline and an increase in positive school climate. And we did absolutely! Suspensions were down and honor roll was up 10 to 12 percent each quarter last year when compared to 2014-2015 at WCHS,” Brumbaugh said. “We are expanding the Thunder Way initiatives in all three buildings and aligning our language and programs this year, too.” At ChadwickMilledgeville, student expectations regarding cyberbullying, and the ramifications of violating the policy, are explained to students at an opening day, school-wide assembly, in homeroom discussions,
as well as digital safety training. “We don’t officially use the Positive Behavior Incentive System,” Schurman said, “but we do have positive rewards and recognize students through Student of the Month programs, and quarterly events for students with good grades and good behavior. We believe in weekly recognition of students demonstrating good character and good effort.”

Sept. 9 Milledgeville 22, AFC 19: With 18 seconds left in Friday’s game, the Milledgeville Missiles lined up with the ball at the AFC 10-yard line hoping their luck at the end quarters would change. Brexton Flynn took the snap and then took a step back before firing the ball out to sophomore Carson Boyer near the sideline. Boyer turned, followed a pair of blocks, and zipped into the end zone. Boyer tacked on the 2-point conversion to complete Milledgeville’s come-from-behind 22-19 victory over the Raiders at Floyd Daub Field.  “Just never give up,� Boyer said. “That’s what we learned from this. We can never give up.�  The Missiles (2-1, 2-1 NUIC Upstate), who trailed 19-0 at half, pulled within five points of the Raiders with 4:30 left in the game on the exact same swing pass that won it minutes later. The Missiles’ defense held AFC to 34 yards of second-half offense after allowing a 172 rushing yards in the first half. Despite West Carroll playing a much-improved third quarter after being shut out at half, the Clippers held on to a halftime lead against the Thunder at The Harbor and carried it all the way to a 28-6 win. The Clippers (2-1, 2-1 NUIC Northwest) used their signature running game to amass 130 of 168 yards of offense in the first half, against the Thunder’s 71 total.
