Riding to support veterans Horseback trip to raise awareness makes stops around the region

SHANNON — Tony Jones is riding horseback from his hometown of Fort Pierre, South Dakota, to Washington, D.C., to bring attention to veterans issues.

He said he sees a lot of talk on those issues from people and politicians, but little action to improve veterans’ health care, mental health, homelessness, and more.

Jones, a veteran, stayed overnight in Pearl City on July 28, then rode through Shannon before heading to Polo for a stay July 30.

He and Oville White Eyes, who have been cowboys all their lives, left Fort Pierre on June 5, and hope to make it to the Potomac River by Sept. 10, about 100 days from start to finish.

“Called Cowboys Ride for Veterans Awareness, Tony makes about 15 miles per day with his two horses, alternating riding days,” said Ernie Johnson, Shannon American Legion Post vice commander.

“Our post was very proud to put up Tony and his ponies for the night. We admire what he’s doing, a selfless action to bring more than just awareness to issues adversely impacting our veterans.”

“This isn’t about politics,” they said in written mission statement. “It’s about people. It’s about responsibility. It’s about taking the time to do good.

MIT hires director of admissions MORRISON — Morrison Institute of Technology has hired Larry Libberton of Mount Carroll as its director of admissions.

“We are pleased that Larry has joined Morrison Tech’s staff,” said Christopher Scott, president. “He will bring new perspectives and ideas to our admissions department.”

Gov. Bruce Rauner recently toured the state to push for legislative term limits, which he sees as a systemic change needed to rid the state of career politicians.

Rauner wants lawmakers to pass a constitutional amendment setting term limits during the fall veto session, but the earliest voters could see the amendment on a ballot would be 2018.

Now that another Rauner objective, redistricting reform, is tied up in the courts over constitutionality concerns, the governor is pushing even harder for term limits. He has said all state lawmakers should serve no more than 8 years in office.

Rauner is expected to face an uphill battle on that front. Fierce opposition is expected from Democrats led by House Speaker Michael Madigan, who has been in the Legislature for 45 years. Madigan has also led the charge in trying to keep a remapping amendment off the ballot.

State Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, is against term limits, but said his stance is closely linked with redistricting.

“I am a proponent of redistricting reform, and I believe that if we make races more competitive, we won’t need term limits,” Smiddy said.

Savanna Mayor Tony McCombie, Smiddy’s opponent in the November election for the 71st District seat, took aim last week at Smiddy’s stance.

McCombie said term limits are needed to change the culture in Springfield and fix a broken system.

She said Smiddy’s opposition shows he’d rather protect entrenched politicians than empower the voters.

Smiddy fired back by saying the term limits issue is being used by Republicans as a political tool against those on the other side of the aisle.

“Term limits don’t empower the voters,” Smiddy said. “I really believe individuals in each district should have the right to elect individuals they think are doing a good job.”

Smiddy said there is a sizeable learning curve for lawmakers, and they need time to learn the ropes.

Animal lovers hope to keep Heartland Pet Welfare open

SAVANNA — All animal lovers are welcome to attend a community meeting, focusing on grassroots support, to help keep Heartland Pet Welfare a sustainable community service. They will meet at 7 p.m. Friday in the Savanna City Council chambers.

“We would like everyone in Carroll County or anyone who is interested in continuing this compassionate service to attend the meeting, bring their suggestions and indicate how they would like to contribute,” said Sue Walker, one of the organizers and a regular weekly volunteer cleaner and scooper at HPW. “The current board has dedicated numerous hours, so let’s all pitch in to help them. It’s the community’s time to help make this work. It is do-able if we all contribute our support,” said Freddie Preston, who is a monthly monetary contributor since allergies keep her from being around the cats. “We welcome your suggestions and type of help you can provide.”

Preston said they hope many HPW board members will attend the meeting to help guide their efforts.

“The ultimate goal is the health, well being and safety of the animals; something I think has always been part of the volunteers’ and boards’ efforts,” she said.

“Heartland Pet Welfare has been a valuable contributor to the community. We all know the value of volunteers. The fact the organization has managed to

survive for so long on total volunteer workers is a tribute to all of the volunteers and board members. HPW has helped me with rescued cats and I am grateful they were there. All of my pets are rescues. I’m not sure what my contribution can be to help sustain HPW, but I want to help this effort continue,” Preston said.

The not-for-profit organization formed 15 years ago, and has been at 2720 Wacker Road in Savanna for the past decade.

Board member Christy Fritz said the shelter is not in financial trouble; the building is paid off, and funding is still coming in.

“Financially, we are good,“ Fritz says. “The building was paid off in December. ... It’s just that some of the same people have been doing it a very long time and it’s hard to find new people, especially to take over the top of the operations, all the organizing.”

Longtime Heartland Board President Sue Gerlach-Hilgendorf retired in July, and there is no one to take over operational duties. Gerlach-Hilgendorf told the board a year ago she would be retiring to give them time to plan, and while different options have been considered, “nothing has really worked out,” Fritz said.

Obituaries Paul Barrette

SAVANNA — Paul Barrette, 89, of Savanna, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016, at Mercy Living Center, Clinton, Iowa.

Paul was born Oct. 21, 1926, in Janesville, Wisconsin, the son of Fred and Mildred Barrette. He graduated from Patch Grove High School, Wisconsin, in 1943. He joined the U.S. Army in October 1945 and was a High-speed Intercept Operator in the National Security Agency. He was honorably discharged in March of 1947.

He married Mona Dietrich on Aug. 13, 1947, in Cassville, Wisconsin. After living in Rockford for a short time, they returned to Cassville, where they farmed. Paul then attended Platteville State Teachers College and later the University of Oklahoma at Norman.

In June of 1950, he went to the Savanna Army Depot, where he attended school to become an ammunition inspector in the Quality Assurance Specialist Ammunition Surveillance Program. His job took him to several army depots and communities around the world including: Hermiston, Oregon; Madison, Indiana; Kaiserslautern, Germany; Korea; Savanna; Washington, D.C.; and finally retiring from the Rock Island Army Material Command in 1982.

He and Mona retired in Savanna and enjoyed traveling south in the winters to their condo in San Antonio, Texas.

Paul was a member of the VFW, Moose, Elks, and American Legion. He loved bowling, golfing, attending auctions, hunting, fishing, playing cards, gardening and tending to their orchard. Paul was also an avid Green Bay Packers and San Antonio Spurs fan.

Paul and Mona especially enjoyed spending time with their children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and friends.

After 65 years of marriage, Mona passed away Oct. 13, 2012.

Paul will be dearly missed by his six children, Dennis (Helen) Barrette of Arizona City, Arizona; Thomas (Janice) Barrette, Barbara (Fred) High and Debra K. Johnson of Savanna; Ronald (Teresa) Barrette of Benedict, North Dakota; and Cynthia (Steve) Jones of Franklin, Virginia; 16 grandchildren and 26 greatgrandchildren, and his sister Suzanne Kress of Potosi, Wisconsin.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife Mona, his parents, brothers Frederick and Francis, and one greatgranddaughter Emma.

Cremation Rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm, Saturday, Aug. 13, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. A memorial gathering will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., prior to the memorial service at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date.

TALALA, Oklahoma — William Louis “Bill” Rosenow, 69, of Talala, Oklahoma, formerly from the Chadwick and Milledgeville area, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Bill was born on May 30, 1947 in Freeport, to his parents, August and Genevieve (VanVuran) Rosenow. He graduated from Milledgeville High School in 1965. He moved to Oklahoma in 1975 after working as a dairy farmer in Illinois.

Bill married Dortha Hartman in 1975 and together they raised three children. Bill worked for Boeing for 30 years. He enjoyed gardening and growing vegetables. Bill was a cattleman and enjoyed working on tractors and participating in antique

tractor pulls. Above all else, his favorite pastime was spending time with his grandkids.

Bill is survived by his wife Dortha; his sons, Matt Rosenow, his wife Kimberly and their children, Noah and Caitlynn; and Tom Rosenow, his wife Janessa and their children, William Blake, Elizabeth, and Dylan; his daughter Claire Rosenow, her fiancé Dan Markham, and her children, Landen, John, and Emma; his brother Allen Rosenow and wife Cindy; his sisters, Marlene Gelsinger and husband Darrel, Gloria Engel, and Ardith Spencer; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John Rosenow, and his sister Janice Adams.

Visitation for Bill was Thursday, Aug. 4, at the Collinsville Dolton Funeral Home.

Funeral Services were held Friday, Aug. 5, at the Oologah Assembly of God with the Rev. Kent Jensen officiating.

ometimes all it takes is a short break to rejuvenate yourself. This is exactly what I needed! We took off with the boys for a short trip to Treasure Island in Florida on the gulf, leaving Wednesday and coming back early on Saturday.

We didn’t have much time to spare with busy schedules, but we made it a priority to fit this in and it was just what we all needed! Sun, sand, and hot weather have always been the cure-all for me.

Even better this time was the opportunity to parasail.

It was amazing and I would certainly do it again.

But now, back to reality, fair week, and school starting next week. Oh, and it is also that time of year where I need to type up all the activities we have done this past year — so much for relaxed!

If you ordered peaches, remember they are going to be available for pick up after 10 a.m. on Monday,

The earlier the better is how things go with anything that is perishable. They will keep a while and normally aren’t ready to eat right away, but we are not responsible if you don’t come get them for a day or two. I can only keep them so cold in the auditorium.

Demmer: Pros and cons to term limits LIMITS

McCombie said both parties agree systemic reforms are needed, but she is a staunch supporter of term limits and a Fair Map initiative.

“They are the reforms that could reverse decades of corruption, waste, and inflated taxes that have ruined our economy,” she said. “Career politicians pick their voters, block any attempt at reforms, and make rules that keep laws from being voted on.”

Smiddy said he would consider term limits for leadership, but he pointed to former U.S. Rep. Lane Evans as a case against instituting them for other lawmakers. Smiddy worked with Evans for many years, watching the late Rock Island Democrat work tirelessly on veterans issues.

“It took him many years to get bills passed on

Agent Orange, veterans benefits and other complex legislation, especially when he had to fight his own party to get it done,” Smiddy said.

State Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, said he sees pros and cons to term limits and redistricting reform, but wants to give voters the chance to decide on both issues.

Demmer feels more strongly about a redistricting amendment than term constraints.

“I think Fair Maps would help promote better competition, and would produce better results than term limits,” Demmer said.

Demmer said he wasn’t going to close the door on term limits, but he has some reservations after seeing how it’s worked in other states. He contends the change hasn’t necessarily fixed the targeted problems.

bring the greatest amount of change,” Demmer said.

State Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, said there has been quite a bit of turnover in the Legislature, with the obvious exception at the top.

“There are 59 senators, and it’s turned over 35 times in 8 years,” Bivins said. “There is a House speaker that’s been there for 45 years, and a Senate president 37, and that’s where most of the problem is.”

Bivins agrees the process must be changed, and a Fair Maps amendment would be a good start.

“Both parties use

redistricting to benefit their incumbents, and that’s something that has to change,” Bivins said.

State Sen. Neil Anderson, R-Rock Island, was unavailable to comment for this story, but his support of a constitutional amendment for term limits was the cornerstone of his campaign message in November 2014.

Anderson unseated Democrat Mike Jacobs, who had represented the 36th District for 9 years, following in the footsteps of his father, Denny, who had been there for 18 years.

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Carroll County 4-H Program and the Carroll County Farm Bureau Young Leaders will be hosting Ag Olympics 2016 at the Carroll County Fair from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday in front of the grandstand. Check-in will be at 5 p.m.

Leanne Rahn, Carroll County 4-H youth leader, said teams will play a maximum of 6 zany games each.

“Games may be wet and messy, so participants are encouraged to dress for a mess!”

Each game will be a timed event, and the the top three teams in each age division will be awarded a prize.

Age divisions are 8-11; 12-14; 15-19; and 20 and up. Each team is made up of four individuals. The age of the oldest team member determines the team’s age division. Participation fee is $10 per team.

“New this year is a Lil’ Ag Olympics for 5 to 7 year olds,” Rahn said.

“There is no participation fee, and a few activities where they will compete against other participants in this age group.”

CHADWICK — When it rains, it pours. A rift on the Village Board has resulted in the resignation of three of its six trustees.

Dave Kness submitted a letter of resignation July 27.

At the Aug. 1 board meeting, Steve Schafer said he also would be stepping down, and longtime trustee Rick Bosacki told the Prairie Advocate that he, too, will resign.

The board will meet in special session at 7 p.m.

Aug. 22 to accept the resignations. At least two new trustees – Mick Morgan and Dennis Ferris – will be appointed then, Village President Larry Miller said.

State law requires an elected official to submit a notarized letter of resignation. No action was taken Monday on the resignations because that hadn’t yet been done, Village Attorney Ed Mitchell said.

In his letter, Kness apologized to the residents of Chadwick for resigning before his term expired. He said his reason for resigning is due to “a lot of verbal fighting and bullying by a couple of councilwomen.”

Kness was referring to Talea Nelson and Karen Lief, who were the subject of a special meeting held July 13, one that Nelson called a “hunting expedition,” and where Kness said, “Absolutely nothing was accomplished.”

At the July 11 regular meeting, Trustee Steve Schafer also called for the two to resign.

“I cannot and will not listen to the two councilwomen anymore.

Life is too short and we can’t seem to move forward.

I look at it like there is only one loser here, and it’s the Village of Chadwick and its residents,” said Kness.

“I hope the public keeps a sharp eye on these two councilwomen and makes sure they have the public interest in mind.”

CHADWICK — The two trustees blamed for the rift on the Village Board that resulted in the resignation of half of the six members last week are pleased with the opportunity to move the village forward.

Trustees Dave Kness, Steve Schafer, and Rick Bosacki informally resigned between July 27 and Aug. 1. The board will meet in special session at 7 p.m. Aug. 22 to accept the resignations, because state law requires an elected official to submit a notarized letter of resignation, which none of the three had filed.

In his letter, Kness referred to Trustees Talea Nelson, a board member for a year, and Karen Lief as the reason for his quitting.

Schafer, who cited health reasons for his resignation, also called for the two to resign at the July 11 board meeting.

Bosacki blamed Nelson and Lief for the “hostile environment” at many board meetings.

“It’s sad that it has come to this,” Lief said. “I am all for moving forward, and would have with the three of them. For months, Talea and I wanted to move ahead, but they didn’t want to see our side of the story. Hopefully, the blame game is over, and we can actually do things properly and improve the village.”

Nelson, too, said it was sad that she and Lief were made “scapegoats” instead of resolving the issues.

“We are not to blame,” Nelson said.

“I never once called for any of them to resign because we disagreed. I was very straight-forward about what I was looking for: follow the laws, and don’t spend over the budget.

“Unfortunately, instead of just saying the stress was too much, they blamed me.

But anger just promotes hate, and they needed an outlet and choose Karen and privilege and pleasure to serve you.”

At the Aug. 1 board meeting, Schafer resigned, citing health reasons.

“Doctor said I should get rid of the stress,” he said. “I’ve had a good time serving for most of the 4 years, but health has to come first.”

Schafer received several anonymous phone calls about the board’s tensions, Miller said.

“When more people come and pay attention, kudos,” she said. “I’m glad people have stepped up and realized what was going on. After all, it is their money we’re spending.”

“People are stopping by my house, asking what’s going on,” Nelson said.

“I tell them I look into everything, even when I am not on any committees. I go to the committee meetings anyway, because I am not given any info until the night of the meeting. That way, I can at least make an informed decision despite not being included.”

Both Lief and Nelson had a positive attitude about the new appointees.

“Mick (Morgan) had a lot of good ideas when he was on the board before,” Lief said. “And he wouldn’t have been police chief for all those years if nobody liked him. I don’t know Mr. (Dennis) Ferris, but I have heard good things about him.

I think Larry’s appointments are good ones.”

“I’m sure Mick’s past experience on the board and as police chief will be good for the board,” Nelson said. “He’s my neighbor, too. I don’t know Denny Ferris, but I just hope they come in with clear minds, and want to benefit our community.

“I look at this as an opportunity to pick up and move forward. I hope the new trustees will realize the importance of getting the full amount of information in order to make informed decisions. That’s why I vote no on some things – if I wasn’t given enough information.”

“With all the animosity the past few months, I can honestly say I have no hard feelings toward any of them,” Lief said.

“I just wanted things done above board. I tried to leave my personal feelings outside the board room.”

Bosacki said he gave his best efforts to improve the village.

“I gave it all I had.

Sometimes, in the past, we’ve had disagreements on the board, but we always worked through them. We’ve had resignations before, due to schedule conflicts, but nothing like this,” Bosacki said.

“I hope things can get better.

I hope the new people coming in can get along better.”

After a brief discussion of the proposed perasonnel action, the board hired Amy Busch as a full-time special education teacher for the upcoming school year.

Accounting woes cleared up, including ‘2 Chadwicks’ CHADWICK — No one wants to deal with the IRS, but Chadwick’s finance committee has been working with Wipfli, which conducts the village’s auditing and accounting, to set the record straight with not only the IRS, but the Illinois Department of Revenue, Department of Employment Security, and Social Security.

Finance Committee Chairman Steve Schafer said the problem originated with the July 2015 village employment filings, when the trustees, president, and clerk were added as employees. With those additions, the information was immediately red flagged by the four agencies, since the village had never paid or reported unemployment taxes prior to the filings.

‘We now have all the information corrected, including a report from the Illinois Department of Revenue that waives the penalty, our account has been adjusted accordingly, and has credited the money we have been paying since July,” Schafer said.

“But that triggered another issue with the IRS going back to 2010 to the present, regarding the non-filing of 940 and 941 quarterly wage statements. With the help of Wipfli, we communicated the details, and today, I received six nice, big fat envelopes from the IRS, one for each year from 2010.

month was for $5,000,” he said.

“But everything has been cleared up, even the fact that the IRS had two Chadwick, Illinois’ listed – one with a street address, and one with the P.O. box! It’s been a long process, but it is done,” Schafer said.

Condition of buildings prompts village action ABOVE Village Attorney Ed Mitchell said that at a status hearing Aug. 2 regarding Michael Schmidt’s building on Main Street, the two parties discussed a possible settlement, and the case was continued. Previously, Schmidt’s attorney asked for specifics regarding the extent of repairs required to satisfy the board. Mitchell was directed to inform Schmidt that the board wants a structural engineer’s inspection, conducted at Schmidt’s expense, stating that the building is stable and not a hazard. BELOW: Mitchell will also pursue legal action against the owners of the former doctor’s office. The building is in disrepair, and the proceedings will ask the owners to either fix or demolish the building. If not completed in a satisfactory amount of time, the village will remove it at the owner’s expense.

Street, alley sealcoating

Parts of 10 streets and 13 alleys in the village, more than 31,000 square yards worth, will be repaired or seal coated by Fairhaven Township and the Carroll County Highway department in August.

Trustee Virginia Brinkmeier said three of the “worst” alleys will be repaired by the township at a cost of $1,345, which was unanimously approved by the board.

The rest of the sealcoating by the highway department comes with a price tag of $43,293.30, and was questioned by Trustee Talea Nelson, due to the fact that the amount was more than $20,000, and that the state requires governmental bodies to either obtain bids, or waive the bidding process.

“The county is going to be working on the sealcoating this month, and if we wait until the September meeting, the work may not be done this year,” Village President Larry Miller said.

Attorney Ed Mitchell suggested amending the motion to add waiving the bidding process, as well as approving the sealcoating.

The motion passed unanimously.

Movie night rescheduled As part of the Economic Development Committee report, Brinkmeier said the July movie was canceled because of the heat.

“Lilo and Stitch” will be the featured film at dusk on Tuesday, Aug. 16, in the village park.

Village board stalls on water quality issues

SHANNON – Data presented and discussion during the Water and Sewer Department report Aug. 2 about water issues faced resulted in the Village of Shannon scheduling a special public meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23 in Village Hall to possibly reach a decision on the water quality issues.

Shannon Superintendent of Public Works Jason DeMichel said he had taken two sets of samples on June 22. One was for FehrGraham Engineering and Environmental, and the other went to an independent lab contracted by the village.

Village President Bonnie Foust delivered the independent lab results to the board at its August meeting.

The village was still waiting for results from the samples given Fehr-Graham.

“I didn’t send out the results from the June 1 samples because we know how water gets crazy, so the second test results we just got are from our independent lab, and when you look at them it looks like we have a problem in both wells Two and Four,” Foust said.

The results were well over the maximum allowed EPA standard for combined radium, which is 5 picocuries per liter (pCi/L), a unit for measuring radioactive concentrations:

Well 2 raw was at 8.56 pCi/L, and Well 4 raw tested at 6.67 pCi/L. Foust said as a result of their not moving into compliance with Illinois EPA instructions requiring the village to begin work on a solution to its water quality issues by July 1, their case has been sent to the U.S. EPA for handling.

“We were not ready,” said Foust. “So they automatically do that. When Illinois has a hard time keeping people in compliance, the USEPA becomes part of it. We supposedly will be receiving information from them, but we haven’t heard anything yet.”

DeMichele said the EPA expects the village to have two sources of water to maintain safe drinking water for its residents, but the problem they are facing is that now both Wells Two and Four have excessive levels of radium and the two sources’ “safety valve” is compromised.

“For the last month I’ve been doing my own ‘What If’ — looking at all the concentrations and everything we’ve got in the water,” DeMichele said.

“Well One has historically been high in nitrates . . .

Well Two is the one with the barium problem and now we have a radiological problem with combined radium, and also in 20 years time, the production level on Well Two has dropped from 230

to 105; and Well Four has radium, with the tap levels higher than the well results, radium is getting in there.”

DeMichele said they can no longer “kick the can down the road,” and they are going to have to do something.

“We’ve got a nitrate issue, a barium issue and a radiological [radium] issue at both sites,” he said. “Cap off Wells One and Two and we get rid of the nitrate problem and the barium problem. Well Four has no detectable nitrates and the barium is barely detectable.

The only thing we have is the combined radium problem. A filter system will take that out.

“Bottom line: drill Well Five, mirror it after Well Four, filter everything, go for the Community Development Assistance Program grant and we will be looking at $1.25 million.

I would say we are high on the list for the grant because they want us to have two sources of water and we’ve got radium in both.”

Foust said they need to focus.

“This is a shock and I want you to have these numbers, so we can be thinking about it and figuring out how we are going to do this,” she said.

Village Engineer Adam Holder will distribute current water quality data to the board the week of Aug. 15 prior to the special public meeting on Aug.23.

The draft CDs re-evaluate or evaluate 16 uses of the Refuge, including beach-related day uses, such as swimming, sunbathing, picknicking, and other; boating with motordriven watercraft; camping; canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddling, and sailing; and dog exercising and training.

Compatibility Determinations of these uses were originally completed in 2006 as part of the Refuge’s Comprehensive Conservation Plan. The original CDs are set to expire this year. The draft CDs re-evaluate and in some cases slightly modify the uses originally addressed in 2006.

Thriller ‘Gaslight’ closes summer season Prairie Advocate staff

MOUNT CARROLL – Timber Lake Playhouse, the professional summer theatre of northwest Illinois, presents the acclaimed psychological thriller, Gaslight, Aug. 11 through 21. The production is the sixth and final in the company’s 55th summer season.

The play, by Patrick Hamilton, was so popular, it gave rise to the term “gaslighting,” with its story of a husband who presents his wife with false information to make her doubt her own memory in regard to unexplained disappearances from their home. Mrs. Manningham believes that each time her husband leaves, the lights in house grow dimmer.

An inspector arrives with answers as to whether the

“gaslighting” is real or all in Mrs. Manningham’s mind.

Cody Jolly, well-known to TLP audiences as an actor, makes his main-stage directing debut with the play.

“The writing is so good that almost immediately you are immersed in the tension of story. It’s not a ‘whodunit,’ but a ‘how’s she going to stop it’ story,” Jolly said.

The central role of Mrs. Manningham is played

by Melissa Weyn of New York City. She was previously seen at TLP in Les Miserables and as the narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

MILLEDGEVILLE — On an acre or so of land next to its new construction site, employees at Midwest BioAg in Milledgeville planted a lot of sweet corn.

Chad Schmidt, interim plant manager, said the company got several free samples of seed corn from various sources, including Milledgeville farmer Brad Smith.

“We planted it, hoping the corn would make the area around the new construction

not look so ratty. And we planted a fair amount!” Schmidt said.

The original plan was to have it ready to pick for the Carroll County Fair.

“Being a new company, it would have been nice to load up a pickup, go to the fair, and hand it out after a grandstand show. A good way to get our name out there, and not waste it,” Schmidt said.

He said the corn plot was very productive, and the heat pushed it where it was ready a week prior to the fair.

Still no answers to the feral cat question

LANARK – What do you do when feral cats are invading the town and posing a health concern? The members of the Lanark City Council are still trying to find a reasonable answer to that question.

With area residents expressing disgust and concern over the pesky felines, everyone involved is trying to figure out a solution. During the Aug. 2 council meeting, City Attorney Ed Mitchell said he has been researching the law for dealing with feral cats, and has not found anything useful.

“There is a wildlife act that has trapping laws. You can get a permit for the trapping season, if the animal is a problem outside of the trapping season, you can request a special use permit to trap, but cats are not on the list. There is also a program under the state where you can ask for money to get stuff done,” Mitchell said. “The city of Buffalo Grove does not trap cats, but somehow they acquire the cat and bring it to the police department, and they will take care of it.”

Alderman Ken Viglietta said former Mayor Ed Stern had been working on a program that took in stray cats, and Stern will turn that information over to the City Council.

Alderman Lance Leverton said his concern was with the animals creating health problems for the small children playing outside at Little Sprouts Day Care.

“The bottom line is that they just need to be rid of the cats.”

Morrison resident Pat McGarvey told the Prairie Advocate that the small town of Oregon, in Ogle County, has a great program for feral cats, saying that a grant and funding was obtained allowing for the trapping of cats to get them spayed or neutered, and then released into a safe area.

“My experience has been as a volunteer with an animal birth control program in Clinton, Iowa. I have paid money out of my own pocket to take these feral cats to the vet, and then I re-release them into a proper area. I read about Lanark’s problem, and thought I would let them know about the program,” McGarvey said.

Ministerial group plans 5th community service day

MOUNT CARROLL – With a goal to get the whole community involved in an effort to assist their neighbors in Mount Carroll with home projects that they are unable to accomplish themselves, the Mount Carroll Ministerial Association has set Community Service Day for Saturday, Sept. 10. This will be the fifth year for this volunteer service event.

The Rev. Donna Hoffman,

pastor of Mount Carroll United Methodist Church, said the Ministerial Association is a group of churches whose aim is to help people make a difference in the lives of their neighbors in the community.

“Together, they work to coordinate over 500 people in an effort to be the hands, feet, and heart of Jesus through worship, caring, and support as they reach out beyond the church walls.

They do this all through the year through different service projects,” Hoffman said.

“Much of what they do helps people with the basic necessities of life, such as spiritual and financial needs as well as lending a friendly ear.”

Hoffman said this program is a great way for anyone, with any or no skill set, to get involved and assist a neighbor who just needs someone to care enough to help out.

She said some of the projects for Community Service Day include window washing, yard clean-up, gutter cleaning, light tree and shrub

“We put a little extra fertilizer on it. We’ve got a whole shed full! And the weather conditions have been great. Adequate moisture, plus plenty of warm days, and we had a bumper crop. And it looks like our area farmers will, too.

“There is only so much I can eat, and all the employees here, so we planned all along to give it away to anybody that wanted it. We picked a bunch and delivered two big boxes to the Milledgeville Food Pantry, and took a big box to Chadwick Wednesday.

On Thursday, we set a few boxes around town for people to enjoy,” he said.

“People have stopped out and asked if they could pick it, too. We said, ‘Take as much as you want!’ Better to give it away than to waste it. We have enough waste in the country.”

Schmidt and company were also grateful for the extra help picking all those ears.

“We’d like to thank a few other members of the football team who came over and picked all morning, three big boxes full,” Schmidt said.

“They donated their time, and we gave them a little workout, too. Zach and

Dawson Hook, Corey Anderson, Alex Kersten, Connor Eubanks, and Marcus McKenna, and Alli Schmidt and Mady Frederick, two girls who have been picking the last two mornings.”

He said it was enjoyable driving around, delivering the sweet corn.

“I got to see some people that I hadn’t seen for awhile, some came in or called. It wasn’t a lot of work, and was more fun than anything, especially visiting with people. And for the most part, people appreciated getting some good sweet corn. That’s not why we did it, it’s just nice giving back to the community.”

“This was one of the very first community projects I became involved with when I first came to Mount Carroll. I was very impressed with how well organized the event is and the willingness of the community to get involved,” Hoffman said.

Even though the Community Service Day is sponsored by the MCMA, it

is not just a church event.

“This is a ‘community’ event, open to anyone who wishes to be involved in helping a neighbor. Anyone wanting to serve others is welcome,” said Hoffman.

Feral cats difficult to rehabilitate t

An excerpt from the Safe House Rescue League explains the definition of a feral cat as one born and raised in the wild, or who has been abandoned or lost and reverted to wild ways. Any cat who lives on an Illinois farm is also considered feral according to Illinois Animal Protection law.

These cats often live in groups or colonies and

take refuge on whatever food they can find, and take shelter in abandoned buildings or cars. Most feral cats are extremely difficult to rehabilitate and are unlikely to ever behave as a house cat.

The league says the most humane and effective solution for these cats is Trap-Neuter-Return program that involves trapping all of the cats in a colony, having them neutered, vaccinated for rabies, eartipped, and then

returned to their territory where they are monitored by a caretaker and provided with food and shelter.

The TNR program immediately stabilizes the size of the colony and will result in a gradual decline of the population over time. In addition, the nuisance behavior often

LANARK – The Lanark Park Board and the City of Lanark are asking for public help to fund two projects to improve accessibility at Lanark City Park.

The Park Board, consisting of Rosemary Flikkema, Haley Grim, Jennifer Sturtevant, and Matt Zumdahl, is complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act, after a complaint was filed by an unnamed resident last year.

Work started in the spring to construct sidewalks to all the amenities in the park – two shelters, the gazebo, playground equipment, and washrooms.

The city appropriated $30,000 for the project, and half of the funds were used to complete sidewalks on the south side of the park. The first phase was completed in June, just in time for Old Settlers Days weekend.

“We are raising additional funds for better lighting throughout the park, updating playground equipment, with some handicap accessible items, and sidewalks and curbing on the north side of the park to comply with ADA requirements,” Grim said.

We have two guys with experience from last year. With that being said I think our running attack will be very effective with Kyle Wolff and Andrew Kaiser running the football. Our QB Payton Calow will be experienced and he was top in conference in passing as well.”

And the teams to beat? “I really think that Stockton will be very tough with their skills and Fox at QB. Polo lost a lot but they are still very talented on both sides of the ball. In my opinion, I think we have one of the best players in the state in Andrew Kaiser. He will be our go to guy on offense and all over the field at safety on defense.”

About teams to beat, Barr said, “Our goal this year will be to focus on one game at a time, as I believe our conference will be very competitive from game one to game nine. We open with a playoff team, Warren, who I look to again be a playoff team and top conference contender. We were also beat by a good Milledgeville team and Durand who will each be in the top tier of our conference.

I believe last year’s top teams, Stockton and Polo will continue to hold the top spots in our conference.

“I am excited to again have the opportunity to work with such great kids, and compete against some of the best football programs and coaches in the state of Illinois.

I also want to welcome Amboy, who we face in week nine as a crossover game. Good luck to all area teams and coaches!”

Whereas we are undersized especially up front compared to many teams, we run extremely well and should be able to make up for it on speed. Lastly, experience, we bring back a senior class that has played and been very successful a lot of football for us.

We return eight starters on offense and eight on defense.

“Our one big weakness is going to be the same thing it has been for a couple of years. We are undersized on our offensive and defensive lines. We will be much smaller than most teams we play.

We will have to overcome this weakness by playing with a lot of speed,” said Thornton.

Wichman said many returning starters and players with varsity experience, plus two defensive stalwarts in Vandenburgh and Allison are definite strengths. But team depth, a varsity roster of about 38 players, is a weakness.

“We have to find a way to scratch out five wins in order to qualify for the playoffs. Every game for us is a playoff game. We have consistently performed better the last few years and hope to keep that program progress moving forward this season.”

Legacy Walk ‘a step into the future’ WALK

At the July 19 council meeting, Alderman Lance Leverton put out a challenge for business owners to purchase legacy markers.

Suggestions for adopting a square include celebrating a special occasion, creating a memorial for a loved one, honoring family and friends, giving an unforgettable gift, and promoting your business.

“The Legacy Walk markers are one way we are encouraging citizens to become involved with the city park improvements,” Sturtevant said. “We encourage Lanark businesses and organizations to also become partners in this community effort.”

“The Legacy Walk is actually a step into the future,” Zumdahl said. “Your support will create improvements in the Lanark City Park including handicap

accessible sidewalks, additional lighting and paved/designated handicap parking for not only today’s park visitors, but for generations to come.”

A 4-inch diameter marker will be embedded in the Legacy Walk segment of the Lanark City Park sidewalk.

Display your antique tractor at Whiteside County Fair Prairie Advocate staff

MORRISON – Antique tractor buffs will have a heyday at this year’s 146th Annual Whiteside County Fair, which runs Aug. 16 to 20.

Each participant will receive a 146th Whiteside County Fair plaque to display on their antique tractor. The exhibitor’s will fire up their engines for the parade about one hour before the start of that evening’s truck and tractor pulls at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19.

Anyone displaying their antique farm tractor will be required to purchase a season membership pass which will automatically enter them into the exhibition. Due to space constraints, the display will be limited to “restored or good original” tractors.

The fair also welcomes for display, hit and miss engines that are in working order. No garden tractors or implements are allowed

unless the implements are mounted to the tractor.

Pre-registration is recommended and can be done by contacting Ron Shank at 772-7157.

Over $119,000 in premiums will be offered in prize money to winners in over 1,500 different classes. The 60-page premium books are available at banks throughout the County or online directly from the fair website.

The first event of the fair is the Western Horse Show at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16, in the infield at the Gold Star F.S. Arena.

entertainment is Pro-Bull Riding at 7 p.m.

The morning of Wednesday, Aug. 17, starts with Exhibition Barrels at the Gold Star F. S. Arena at 8 a.m., with Speed Events at 9.
