Since 1965, the number of religious sisters in the U.S. dropped from almost 180,000 to 47,160, a 74 percent decrease, according to the

Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate.

The decrease, and one young woman’s decision to join the Poor Clare Colletine nuns at Corpus Christi Monastery in Rockford, were driving factors in why artist and Lanark native and Mount Carroll resident Abbie Reese worked to share their stories with the wider world.

Reese’s documentary about Heather, a former blogger and painter who decided at 19 to join the Poor Clare nuns, is titled “Chosen (Custody of the Eyes).”

The film, which was selected to show at film festivals in North and South America, Europe, and Australia, will screen in mid-

March in Rockford.

“Documenting was definitely part of it. The driving force at this moment in time is the desire to understand what’s going on in a woman’s mind as she contemplates entering a radically countercultural way of life. I wanted to trace that interior journey,” Reese, 40, said in a recent phone interview.

The daughter of Dr. Jim and Lee Reese of Lanark, Abbie moved from

Chicago to Lanark with her parents when she was 6. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Chicago.

Reese learned in 2000 of a trend of young women who were becoming nuns, and in 2005, she began working with Heather, who was granted permission to film within the monastery. During her journey, Heather took the name Sister Amata.

in their life. Their lives are dedicated to prayer and penance, but they don’t know what the fruit of their life will be until the day they die,” Reese said.

Reese also wrote a book related to her research, “Dedicated to God: An Oral History of Cloistered Nuns,” published in 2014. She remains in contact with the nuns, helping them record chants and original music for the soundtrack of the documentary.

“I’m helping sell that, with all proceeds going back to the monastery, People can go to the website (chosenthefilm.com) to purchase those; we should be able to start mailing those out on Feb. 15. I equipped the nuns with InDesign and Premiere Adobe software. They designed a 16-page booklet that comes with the CD,” Reese said.

“Chosen” is a slower film than some people may be used to.

“There’s one scene that’s a few minutes long of nuns working in the yard. I’ve heard some people found that challenging, because it requires sustained attention in real time that we’re not used to,” Reese said.

Reese continues to work with the nuns on projects, and has plans for a second film, titled “The Jesus Cage.” The name comes from a name a great-niece of one of the nuns gave the metal grill of the monastery’s enclosure.

Reese is the director, editor, and producer, and purchased a home in Mount Carroll in 2008 after she started work on the documentary.

“I started filming in 2009. Most of the footage was in 2012, and it carried on until 2015. Heather entered the monastery in 2011, and took temporary vows in 2014,” Reese said.

While Reese did not want to reveal if Sister Amata has taken final vows – which should take place 6 years after a young woman enters the monastery – the answer is in “Chosen,” Reese said.

“She still is in the monastery,” Reese said.

As Reese worked with the nuns on the project, she earned more of their trust. In a press kit for “Chosen,” she wrote about how since the nuns only see the skin of each other’s faces and hands, even typically conservative clothing would be out of place. She started wearing clothing up to her neck and down to her wrists and ankles.

“As I made those changes, I realized in retrospect that I had passed some sort of tests. I was invited into the monastery to make photographs and record video footage after I changed my garb (including taking off and leaving my dangly earrings in my car),” Reese wrote.

Part of the monastery is enclosed, to meet the Poor Clare vow of enclosure. The nuns also take vows of chastity, obedience, and poverty, and they observe monastic silence, speaking only what is necessary.

Reese was allowed to stay at the monastery’s guest area, but not in the enclosure.

FULTON – Beverly J. Bonneur, 88, of Fulton, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018, at Alverno Health Care Facility in Clinton, Iowa, with family by her side.

Beverly was born July 21, 1929, in Fulton, to John and Dena (Sikkema) DeWeerdt. She was educated at Fulton Grade School, and was a graduate of Fulton High School. Beverly married Harold L. Bonneur on Sept. 26, 1947. They celebrated 70 years together. Beverly was dedicated to being a loving mother, a hardworking farm wife, and faithful church member. She enjoyed caring for her family by taking care of her ‘aunts,’ her own mothers, and her children. Farming was a family business, where she worked right along with her husband and her family. Being a Sunday school teacher, member of Hannah Mission, choir member, member of Gideon’s Auxiliary, and part of the Evangelism team were a few ways she showed her love for her Lord. She also organized the meals for many funerals over the years. Working alongside the people of Trinity Reformed Church brought her much love and joy.

Survivors include her husband, Harold of Fulton; her children, Jacquelyn Kramer of Bettendorf, Iowa, Susan (Warren) Amman and Barbara (Gary) Siefken, both of Fulton, Arlyn (Sheri) Bonneur of Morrison, Daniel (Tammi) Bonneur of Waseca, Minnesota,

and Lisa (Dean) Kuper of Shannon; 14 grandchildren include Jason (Cara) Kramer, Benjamin (Lindsay) Kramer, Jill (Matt) Dobbe, John (Leslie) Amman, Jeffrey (Kelsey) Amman, William (Nikki) Siefken, Jenna (Ralph) Copeland, LeAnn (Adam) Schaefer, Adam (Kayleigh) Bonneur, Theron (Paulette) Bonneur, Drew Bonneur, Jordan (Stephanie) Bonneur, and Anna and Leah Kuper. There are 19 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by three sisters, Arlene Dykema and Irma Swanson, both of Fulton, and Judy Dykstra of Waupun, Wisconsin; four brothers, Robert (Carol) DeWeerdt of Georgetown, Texas, Leon (Elsie) DeWeerdt, Larry DeWeerdt, and Gene (Diane) DeWeerdt, all of Mesa, Arizona; a brother-in-law, Eugene Bonneur of Morrison; and a sister-in-law, Kay Bonneur of Morris. There are many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter; her parents; three sisters, Betty Merema, Eunice Norman, and Lois DeWeerdt; and six brothers, Arthur, Vernon, Marvin, Arnold, Jim, and Russell DeWeerdt.

The funeral was Monday at Fulton Presbyterian Church. Interment was at Fulton Township Cemetery in Fulton.

Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home in Fulton handled arrangements.

Memorials have been established to Fulton Presbyterian Church and The Gideons.

Rock Falls teen’s arson court case advances Hearing on whether to try her as an adult soon may be set

STERLING – Another status hearing was set Tuesday for the teen accused of helping her girlfriend clean up after investigators say she murdered her mother then set the house afire.

At the Feb. 13 hearing, the court is expected to learn Court Services has completed its pretrial report on

Rachel Helm, 15, of Rock Falls. If so, with that information in hand, a hearing on the state’s motion to try her as an adult can be set.

“So we’re getting Rachel close,” Judge Trish Helm Joyce noted.

Rachel is charged in Whiteside County juvenile court with concealment of homicidal death and arson, accused of helping Anna Schroeder, also 15.

Anna is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, as well as concealment of homicidal death and arson in the July 6 shooting of her mother, Peggy S. Schroeder, 53, of Morrison.

According to investigators: Anna shot her mother in the head at their home at 805 W. Park St. the afternoon of July 6 – just 3 days after she turned 15.

• ARSON Continued from Page 5 She texted Rachel, her girlfriend, and sent her a photo of what she’d done, then Rachel got a ride to Morrison and the girls spent the next day trying to clean up the blood. The morning of July 8, Rachel set fire to the bed sheet covering Peggy’s body and to sheets in Anna’s room in an attempt to conceal the crime.

Anna then went to her father’s home in Walnut, and Rachel went back to her home in Rock Falls, where, overcome with guilt, she told her mother, Lois Holland, what they had done. Holland drove her to the Sheriff’s Department around 8 p.m., and Rachel told investigators everything that happened and where Anna could be found.

Anna was picked up at her dad’s house and taken to the Bureau County Sheriff’s Department, where she broke down during questioning and confessed, investigators said.

The state is seeking to try both girls as adults.

If convicted as a minor, Anna could be imprisoned until she is 21. If the case is transferred to adult court, she would face 6 to 30 years, or more.

Concealment of homicidal death carries 2 to 5 years in a juvenile detention facility, and arson 3 to 7 years.

Both teens are being held at Mary Davis Detention Home in Galesburg.

PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF FREEPORT – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Illinois will discontinue operation effective Feb. 18.

In a press release, Kathryn Martinez, vice president of patient services and chief nursing officer at FHN Memorial Hospital, said FHN was recently informed by the national Big Brothers organization of new requirements to run the program, that FHN is unable to meet.

“These include hiring a full-time program director and two full-time staff, annual revenue of at least $200,000, and a minimum of 100 Big,

Friends, family and performers from Once Upon a Dream Performances of Rockford celebrated the homecoming of Kylia Johnson, 4, Friday afternoon at the Polo Fire Department. Kylia was discharged Thursday from Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in Chicago as she recovers from extensive injuries she suffered in a car crash Dec. 11 in Ogle County that killed her mother, Sarah, and unborn brother, Oliver. Kylia’s father, DJ, also was injured in the crash.

Here, Kylia is held by her cousin, Audrey Sundquist, 12. The “Princess and Superhero” group from Rockford donated their time to the little princess’ party. Sarah grew up in Lanark and graduated from Eastland High School in 2009. She and DJ were high school sweethearts who had just celebrated their seventh anniversary on Dec. 4.

On paper, Illinois has what it takes – a well-trained workforce, top-notch universities, some of the best farm land in the nation, and abundant transportation resources.

We should be leading the nation, but we aren’t.

Key to turning Illinois around is promoting the kind of economic climate that encourages job creation and growth, property tax relief; workers’ compensation and regulation reforms, and reining in state spending.

The Fiscal Year 2019 Budget

Ethics legislation has been introduced that would make it illegal for elected representatives or senators to be involved with litigating property tax appeals.

Senate Bill 2495 states that no legislator may accept or participate in any way in any representation case before the State of Illinois or any unit of local government in the State on any matter filed on or after Feb. 1, 2018, that involves a challenge to any tax or proposed assessment of any tax or fee.

In Illinois, some of our elected officials have been making money from the property tax appeals system. Two weeks ago, an executive order was issued to prevent legis-

lators from practicing before the state’s Property Tax Appeal Board.

And now legislation has been introduced that applies this same standard to every legislator.

More money sent to CPS, at expense of other schools More than $45 million in additional funding is now projected to head to Chicago Public Schools at the expense of the vast majority of school districts throughout the state. This, after Democrat majorities in the House and Senate overrode the governor’s amendatory veto of Senate Bill 444 on Jan. 31, making it law.

Senate Bill 444 makes technical changes to the evidence-based school funding law (Senate Bill 1947) that dealt with how equalized assessed valuation (EAV) is calculated in the formula.

Outrageous conference expenses yet another reason for government consolidation

A

s if there already weren’t enough arguments for government consolidation in Illinois, here’s another one: The administrative offices of four school districts in south McHenry County in the northwest suburbs of Chicago are located within sevenand-a-half miles of each other.

Two, both based in Crystal Lake, are barely a mile apart. The other two, both based in Algonquin, are about 3.5 miles apart.

If you were to drive from one to the next until you stopped at all four – District 47 and 155 in Crystal Lake, and Districts 158 and 300 in Algonquin – it would require fewer

If you were to pin each of the offices on a map, they’d cover less than 20 square miles.

Yet these same four districts, located so close to each other, sent a combined 52 staff and school board members to an education conference in Chicago recently, costing taxpayers a combined $55,450.

And why send so many people who serve students so close to each other?

The Illinois News Network recently published the results of a monthlong investigation into the use of taxpayer dollars for school officials’ attendance at the Illinois Association of School Boards’ annual conference in mid-November in Chicago. We filed Freedom of Information Act requests with more than two dozen school districts across the state.

Our investigation uncovered what at best can be described as highly questionable spending. In addition to the registration, hotel and other costs, officials from one school district, for example – Bloomington District 87 – billed taxpayers for an $1,800 meal at an exclusive restaurant that averaged more than $100 per plate.

The school board members and administrators dined on filets, oysters, and lobster, all at taxpayer expense. The school district’s superintendent has since apologized.

School officials told INN that the training they received at the conference is invaluable, particularly for newer school board members and administrators.

But a closer look shows spending at such conferences is an abuse of the state’s overly burdened taxpay-

Our investigation looked at just 26 districts, four of which were the southern McHenry County districts mentioned above. Do you know how many school districts there are in Illinois?

I knew it was a lot, but I had to look it up. The answer is more than 850.

If each of Illinois’ school districts spent on average what the four districts from Crystal Lake and Algonquin – located within 8 miles of each other – spent on the IASB conference, taxpayers in the state would be on the hook for more than $11.9 million.

For a single, 3-day conference in Chicago.

School districts aren’t the only governmental units in Illinois that have associations similar to IASB’s.

Each of them – for cities and villages, townships, park districts and more – host conferences similar to the education one in Chicago. An INN investigation into an Illinois Municipal League conference in October found similar spending abuses.

Illinois has nearly 7,000 units of local government. You might have heard this before, but that’s the most in the country by far. And that’s despite the fact that Illinois is only the sixth most populous state in the nation.

It was fifth largest about a month ago. But then in December, the U.S. Census Bureau released updated data showing the Land of Lincoln again lost tens of thousands of people on net, year over year. The population dropped for a fourth consecutive year.

The top reason people leave Illinois for other states? Crushing taxes that pay for outrageous spending.

There are several reasons that Illinoisans’ tax burden is too high, government corruption among them, but the unnecessarily high number of taxing bodies certainly is among them.

Of the more than 850 local school districts in Illinois, one in four supports only a single school. More than 40 percent serve just one or two schools.

The city of Marengo, population 7,500 and also in northwest suburban McHenry County, is served by three separate school districts, for example. Three!

Would the four Crystal Lake and Algonquin school districts send 52 people to the IASB conference at a cost of taxpayers of more than $55,000 if they were a single district? And, of course, that doesn’t include the costs of four superintendents, four chief financial officers, four human resource departments, etc. ...

Statewide, about 4,800 school officials from more than 700 districts

across Illinois attended the IASB event. If we cut the number of our school districts in half, how much taxpayer money would have been saved on this single conference alone?

Of course, schools say they are starving for more money. At a recent budget hearing, the Illinois State Board of Education asked state taxpayers to spend an additional $7 billion on education next year. That’s nearly double the $8 billion sent to school districts this school year.

Government is far too big in Illinois.

Taxpayers are paying the price, and leaving the state as a result.

We need to eliminate hundreds – thousands, more likely – of redundant units of government, including school districts.

Our government officials need to make better spending decisions.

That’s Illinois’ only chance.

Gorzny’s first 3 came with 5:57 left in the second quarter off a Bartel inbounds pass under the basket for a 16-10 lead.

Kaneland cut it to a one-possession game on four separate occasions in the second quarter, but never held a lead in the game. Trevor Carlson scored all eight of his points off the bench in the second quarter, and Rhett Espe’s layup with a second left in the half got the Knights close, but never ahead.

Riverdale 44, Fulton 42: The Steamers lost at Riverdale despite leading 33-27 heading into the final quarter, as the Rams scored 17 points in the fourth to pull out the win.

Dixon led 49-38 entering the final 8 minutes. It erased a 33-31 halftime deficit. Eastland, however, was far from done. The Cougars hit 7 of their first 8 shots in the fourth quarter, including a pair of 3s by Kaden Henze, to get as close as three points in the waning seconds.

Two free throws from Derian Duncan with 14 seconds remaining upped the margin back to five points, and the Cougars were unable to get a quality look the rest of the way. The Dukes hit 11 of 13 free throws in the final quarter to keep Eastland a safe distance away.

GIRLS BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS SATURDAY Sterling 64, Woodstock North 22: The Golden Warriors scored their largest win of the season in a nonconference game against the Thunder at Musgrove Fieldhouse.

As starters gave way to reserves, the Golden Warriors frustrated North into missing all 11 second-quarter field goal tries. Then, on offense, Sterling scored more points (23) than North did all game.

Sterling never trailed. Buoyed by an eight-point run, the Golden Warriors led 15-6 at the end of one quarter. All but one Sterling player saw playing time in the second quarter, and each contributed a stat of some sort on their way to a 38-8 halftime lead.

Poor shooting doomed the Thunder at the half (3-for-22), a stark contrast to the hot-shooting Golden Warriors (16-for-27).

Grace Gould led the Golden Warriors with 16 points. Ten of the 12 Golden Warriors who dressed scored, and all 12 pulled down at least one rebound. Cierra Avila led the bench with eight points, and Katelyn Grell added seven points and seven rebounds.

Newman had a 40-37 lead after three quarters, and held on for dear life in the fourth. Madison Craft’s three-point play with 5 minutes to go put the Comets up 44-39, but BV made it a one-possession game on three separate occasions over the next 4½ minutes.

Hannah Wilson split a pair of free throws, while Alejandra Padilla sank two shots from the foul line to put Newman up 52-48 with 11.6 seconds left. Christen Hurley’s 3 with 9.3 seconds remaining cut the Storm’s deficit to one.

Abby Willging led the balanced attack with seven points. Kylee Sweenie and Rylee Leitzen each had six.

Fulton trailed 7-6 after one quarter and 13-11 at halftime, then scored 12 points in the third quarter to take a 23-22 lead, but could not hold it.

WEDNESDAY Newman 70, Oregon 54: The Hawks able to survive an early run by Newman. But after the Comets went on another run, the Hawks could never quite get back in the game, and Newman came away with the nonconference win.

Newman led by as many as 19 early in the fourth quarter following a Madison Craft 3-pointer to make it 54-35, but Olivia Lambrigtsen answered with a 3-pointer of her own, launching the Hawks on a 12-2 run to get within nine points.

But that was as close as Oregon would get, with Newman hitting 8 of 9 free throws in the closing minutes to keep the Hawks at bay.

Oregon turned the ball over 18 times in the game as Newman’s zone defense was able to challenge many of Oregon’s passes.

Newman jumped out to an 11-0 lead, scoring on its first five trips down the floor, but Oregon came back with a 12-2 run of its own. The Comets responded by opening the second quarter with an 8-0 run, with seven of those points coming from Craft.

Craft had 12 points in the first 10 minutes of the game, but for the rest of the second quarter, it was Alejandra Padilla taking over off the bench. She had nine points in that quarter alone, hitting a pair of jumpers and a floater in the lane, and shooting 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Craft finished the game with 24 points. Lauren Wilson added 16 points and nine rebounds.

Lambrigtsen led Oregon with 13 points, hitting 6 of 8 free throws.

TUESDAY Sycamore 54, Sterling 42: Grace Gould led the Golden Warriors with 10

points in a road loss to the Spartans.

Kylie Feuerbach poured in 24 points for Sycamore.

Milledgeville trailed 40-39 heading into the fourth, but couldn’t get over the hump. Rebecca Waite added nine points for the Missiles.

MONDAY Hall 49, Newman 48: The Comets pushed the Red Devils to overtime in Spring Valley, but ultimately fell by a point in the TRAC East tilt.

Ideal class “A” driving candidates should have a minimum of 2 years experience.

Class “B” and limited experience class “A” candidates will be considered for commercial and residential collection routes.
