LANARK – Almost 20 years have gone by since Lanark’s water tower received a coat of paint, and the City Council wants to spruce things up a bit. Aldermen talked at the Feb. 6 meeting about painting the inside and outside of the tower, which has its original coat of paint from 1999. “It’d be full paint on the outside, and them updating a few of the inside components. There’s some valves that need replacement, some maintenance,â€? Alderman Brad Knutti said. The project would take about 8 weeks, with work possibly starting as soon as this fall or spring 2019. “It depends on bids and scheduling. It’s not out for bids yet. We’re working on the final presentation of options for the bid, and it should be out in the next few weeks,â€? Knutti said. Right now, the project looks to cost between $300,000 and $500,000, Knutti added. In action items, the council: • Accepted the resignation of two cemetery

The council tabled a discussion on parking restrictions for semitrailers. “Residents have raised issue of having a large semi truck parked in front of their house. Also, an 80,000-pound truck could damage some side streets,â€? Viglietta said.
MILLEDGEVILLE – A pair of fourth-generation Milledgeville residents opened PUB 225 on Jan. 15 in a 100-plus-year-old building, at 310 N. Main Ave. In a news release, co-owner Jamie Emmert wrote that she and Jason Schmidt wanted to keep everything local and help bring the renovated downtown of Milledgeville back to life. As their remodeling progressed, they uncovered the original plate glass windows and original tin on the ceiling and walls. The bar features sports viewing and gaming machines. A full appetizer menu and martini menu are available, as well as occasional hot dinners offered by a local catering company. Hours are from 4 p.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, noon to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. Full field at forum Candidates give public a lot to choose from for sheriff BY RACHEL RODGERS Sauk Valley Media rrodgers@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5529 ROCK FALLS – The five candidates running for Whiteside County sheriff weighed in on their priorities and qualifications to a packed house at the American Legion on Saturday. The Legion hosted a forum aimed at letting community members get a closer look at the candidates, each with varying law enforcement experience, who will be on the March 20 primary ballot. The goal is to have a debate in September between the Democrat and Republican front-runners before voters have the final say in November. The candidates largely agreed on focuses and challenges a sheriff will
face, including mental health, community relations and financial hurdles in the county. Here’s a rundown of the candidates and highlights from the 2 1/2hour event:
Mike Lewis A Whiteside County deputy, Lewis, 46, of Rock Falls, is one of four Republicans running for the office. He began at the department in 2003 after 3 years at the Lanark Police Department and said he’s the only candidate to have worked every post at the sheriff’s department including the jail, patrol, courthouse security and civil process. He also is a part-time Tampico police officer.

FRANK C. VRANICH MILLEDGEVILLE – Frank Charles Vranich, 92, of Milledgeville, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018, at Rock River Hospice and Home in Sterling. He worked for many years at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont. Frank was born April 10, 1925, in Ironwood, Michigan, the son of Steve and Barbara (Biondich) Vranich. He was a veteran of the Navy. He married Helen Frey on Nov. 1, 1947, in Chicago. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Georgiana Cain of Milledgeville; one brother, John Vronich of Milledgeville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Anne Jorgensen and Margaret Heser; and one brother, Steve Vranich. A private family service will be held at a later date. McDonald Funeral Home in Milledgeville handled arrangements.
EMMETT J. ENGEL LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. – Emmett Joseph Engel, 73, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, at Havasu Regional Medical Center. For the past year, he courageously battled a deteriorating state of Bell’s Palsy, renal disease, pseudo tumors, and coronary artery disease. He passed due to complications from a heart attack. Emmett was born Aug. 5, 1944, in Galena, the second son of Edward and Emma Engel. He was raised in Hanover, graduating in 1962 from Hanover High School. Emmett served in the Army from August 1965 to August 1971. His medals and commendations include Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Marksman M-14 rifle, Expert M-2 Carbine, and Sharpshooter M-1 Carbine. His chosen career was with the Illinois Department of Transportation, where he was a field maintenance engineer until retirement. His choice of recreational enjoyment circled around good company, auction sales, great food, and tinkering in the ever growing junk yard. Emmett’s spirit lives on through his children, Eric and Erin (Chet); grandchildren, Emma and Kori; brother, Eugene
(Marilyn); nephew, Ryan (Tabitha); great-nephew and great-niece, Henry and Emily; as well as numerous friends, family members, and devoted auction goers. Emmett was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Emma Engel; and brother, Ellis Engel. JANESVILLE, Wis. – Robert J. “Bob” Heckman, 60, of Janesville, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 3, 2018, after a 6-year battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 1, 1958, in Freeport. He graduated in 1976 from from Lanark High School in 1976. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and was stationed at Vandenburg Air Force Base in California, where he learned power production. In 1987, he started work for CCI Systems where he was lead tech/coax splicer supervisor. There he met his lifelong friends, Greg and Lisa Anderson, and worked until his illness in 2013. Bob enjoyed bowling, gardening, growing his zinnias, and golfing with his friends, Shane Rose, Scott Wooden, and his sweetheart, Virginia Gonzales. A very sincere thank you to the ICU nursing staff of Mercy Hospital and to Bob’s oncologist, Dr. Shahid Shehkani. Bob is survived by his fiancée and longtime love, Virginia Gonzales; children, Mike, Steve, Andy, Billy, and Caroline Heckman; parents, John and Donna Heckman; brothers, Denny (Kathy Lewis) Heckman, Larry (Robin) Heckman; sisters, Kathy (Kirt) Gruhn, Cindy

SAVANNA – Carroll County Help Center will offer $500 scholarships to graduating seniors in Carroll County interested in training at a community college or a vocational, technical school. Selection will be based on financial need, academic achievement, and future goals. Students can study licensed practical nursing, agricultural business, auto mechanics, data processing, laboratory technology, secretarial, and other fields. Money for the scholarships is from memorial donations and used item sales through the Carroll County Thrift Shop. The deadline is March 1. Interested students can contact their high school guidance counselor for application forms or more information.

Complications from head injuries caused Knight’s death, medical examiner rules BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ Sauk Valley Media kschultz@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5535 CHICAGO – The DCFS worker gravely injured in a beating in September died Thursday of “complications of blunt force head injuries due to assault,” which makes her death a homicide, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said Friday. Pamela Knight, 59, was pronounced dead around 8:15 a.m. at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where she was admitted Feb. 4 for emergency surgery, her family said in a post on CaringBridge.org. The type of surgery was not specified. At the time of her death, “she could move her left finger half an inch and her neck to the right a few inches. She couldn’t talk, she couldn’t walk, she couldn’t eat or swallow,” her daughter, Jennifer Hollenbeck, said in Facebook post-
ings Friday afternoon. In the 4 and a half months since the attack, Knight underwent five “major surgical procedures.” She spent the first 2 Pamela Sue months in a coma, and Knight in the last few weeks was working with therapists at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, formerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, learning to communicate using eye movements and undergoing physical therapy to help her regain movement in her arms and legs. In anticipation of a lifelong struggle with the disabilities the attack had caused, her husband, Don Knight, had spent in excess of $70,000 modifying their Dixon home. Knight, a veteran Department of Children and Family Services worker, was taking a 2-year-old into protective custody when investigators say she was knocked to the ground
and kicked in the head by Andrew Sucher, 25, of Rock Falls. Sucher was indicted Dec. 7 on charges of attempted first-degree murder, which carries at least 6 to 30 years in prison, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, and aggravated battery of a state employee, each of which carries 2 to 5 years in prison. He is being held at Stephenson County Jail on $275,000 bond. Carroll County State’s Attorney Scott Brinkmeier could not be reached Friday for comment on whether or when those charges would be increased; the county closed its offices because of the weather. The 6-foot-4, 270-pound Sucher is accused of fracturing Knights’ skull, causing permanent brain damage that also led to her extensive physical disabilities. Knight had gone to Sucher’s home first, with a police escort, to take the child into custody, and when no one was there, she went to his parents’

A mental evaluation of Sucher was ordered Jan. 9; a status hearing on the report, which was to take about a month to complete, is set for Feb. 23. The report, being done by Dr. Joel Eckert of Peoria, will help determine, among other things, whether Sucher is fit to stand trial, is able to aid in his own defense, and whether he was sane at the time of the attack of which he is accused. Sucher also is charged with aggravated battery of a peace officer, which carries 3 to 7 years.

It would make it a felony punishable by 3 to 7 years if the above were true, minus great bodily harm or disfigurement. DCFS workers are not allowed to carry Mace or other weapons on home visits. Meanwhile, two felony cases against Andrew Sucher are advancing in Carroll County Court in Mount Carroll. The 25-year-old was indicted Dec. 7 on charges of attempted first-degree murder, which carries at least 6 to 30 years in prison, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, and aggravated battery of a state employee, each of which carries 2 to 5 years in prison. A mental evaluation was ordered Jan. 9; a status hearing on the report, which was to take about a month to complete, is set for Feb. 23. The report, being done by Dr. Joel Eckert of Peoria, will help determine, among other things, whether

IN BRIEF Beware online dating scams, bank warns STERLING – Sterling Federal Bank staff are warning residents of the risks of online dating scams. In a news release, Cindy Friesen with SFB wrote that social media networks and dating websites have become increasingly popular tools for meeting and communicating. “According to the FBI, over $220 million was lost in 2016 to online romance scam artists. Older Americans in particular have been targeted by this type of scam,” Friesen wrote. Tips to reduce scam risks include: • Slow down and talk to a trusted person. Don’t be rushed by a scammer. • Never wire money, put money on a gift or cash reload card, or send cash to an online love interest. • People who do think they sent money to a scammer should contact their bank right away, as well as the online dating site, the Federal Trade Commission, and the FBI. More than 17,500 blood and platelet donations have gone uncollected. • FORUM Continued from Page 3 Lewis said his know-how of the department and former financial experience with Northwestern Steel and Wire as well as positions on the Rock Falls and Montmorency school boards set him apart from the rest. He wants to “trim the fat” and cut administration positions to make room for more deputies. “We need to make cuts and get more for less,” he said. The department also need to focus on reducing “stagnancy” in the jail and work to lower the inmate population, which has reached north of 100 people. “We need to move these people through the system to decrease our costs on the jail floor,” he said.
Kris Schmidt Schmidt, a sheriff’s sergeant and 46-year-old Republican from Morrison, started out in the U.S. Air Force’s security police in 1990, was a sergeant at the DeWitt Police Department and director of security for Ashford University in Clinton, both in Iowa. He came to the department in 2001, where he was promoted to sergeant in 2009. His solution to most of the issues – such as budgetary strains, addic-
tion and mental health of inmates, and community relations – is working with others, including other law enforcement agencies, to cover more ground, working with the state’s attorney’s office on decreasing the jail population, and streamlining training with area police. “We need a cohesiveness with continual training,” he said. “We all need to know how each other is going to react in a situation.”
Tim Fisher A Republican, Fisher, 47, of Rock Falls, spent most of his career in law enforcement. He joined the Rockton Police Department in 1993 after serving in the U.S. Army military police and then worked at the Rock Falls Police Department for 18 years where he was a patrolman, canine officer, sergeant, investigator, and certified dispatcher. He has spent the past 3 years working in the behavioral health department at KSB Hospital, spent a dozen years as vice president of the Rock Falls police union, and was on the Sterling Christian School board. Fisher said Whiteside County needs its own behavioral healthcare unit and either needs to create its own mental health crisis team or join Lee County’s. He also wants to do away with participating in roadside safety checks to devote man-

power elsewhere and push for better community relations. “We need to get out of the car and talk with the public,” he said. “We have got to get back to where the community is comfortable with talking with officers.”
Clark Mortensen Jr. Rounding off the list of Republicans is Mortensen Jr., 47, of Erie, who served in the Illinois National Guard for 6 years as a Stinger Missile Crewman, was an officer for the Colona Police Department from 1992 to 2000, and has been a police officer and firefighter for Quad City International Airport for the past 17 years. He also was on the Colona City Council from 2001 to 2005 and was a member of its economic development committee. Mortensen said the department needs training for a mass casualty situation, needs to be more involved with the community, find a way to extend patrol areas in the county and make better use of auxiliary groups. The only candidate who hasn’t worked in Whiteside County, he said his knowledge from other towns gives him a better perspective on what needs fixing at the department. “I’m the outside guy who’s going to come in with the fresh ideas,” he said.
John Booker Booker, 51, of Rock Falls, a lieutenant with the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department, is the sole Democrat in the race. He was first hired by the department in 1998 and was a patrol sergeant and detective before becoming lieutenant and commander of the county’s SWAT team. Booker said he has the most knowledge of how to run the department, given that he’s worked closely with Sheriff Kelly Wilhelmi, who announced last year that he’s retiring and will not seek another term after 10 years in the position, and who endorsed Booker, the man he defeated in the 2010 race. He said money is the biggest issue for the county, and he’s familiar with all aspects of being the sheriff, including administration, programs and drafting budgets. “You don’t go to a doctor who has never performed surgery before,” he said. Most of the candidates have yet to name a preferred deputy sheriff, except for Lewis, who has chosen Gabe Gomez, who started at the sheriff’s department and recently retired after 23 years with the Morrison Police Department, and Mortensen, who picked Donnie Pridemore, a lieutenant with the Fulton Police Department.

We are taking a bus to see the Cubs play the Brewers at Miller Park in Milwaukee on Sunday, April 8. The bus will leave at 9 a.m. for the 1:10 p.m. game. GIRLS BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS FRIDAY 1A Newman Regional final Eastland 48, Prophetstown 40: The Cougars’ hopes of a second straight regional title were on life support, and Prophetstown appeared on its way to extending the life of its program at least another few days while adding one last regional crown to the already-packed trophy case. But Eastland turned up the pressure on defense, the 3-pointers started to fall from Erin Henze, and Eastland’s 24
fourth-quarter points led the Cougars to the championship. The Prophets led 30-17 until Henze hit the second of her five 3-pointers in the second half with 3:27 left in the third. That came at the start of a stretch during which Prophetstown turned the ball over 11 times in the span of 13 trips down the floor. “Our defense in the first half was not good at all,” said Henze, who had four steals during the stretch. “I think we just came out [in the second half] with a lot more intensity in our press and our halfcourt defense, and that picked up our momentum on offense as well.” Prophetstown led 34-24 to open the fourth quarter, but the Eastland defense was still clicking and the offense started to follow suit. An Erykah Ames steal led to a Coatney layup. Henze hit a 3-pointer, then picked up a steal and hit another. Milledgeville trailed 13-5 at the end of the first quarter, and outscored Prophetstown 5-4 in the second quarter. The Prophets doubled up on their own first-half point total, as well as Milledgeville’s total points at the end of three quarters (32-16). The Comets got out to a big early lead and cruised to a win against the Cardinals, leading 19-4 in the first 6½ minutes of play. Erie did claw its way back with a ninepoint run, but Newman responded with a 13-0 run over the next 6 minutes, capped by two free throws from Madison Craft to up the Comets’ lead to 32-13. The Cardinals committed 14 first-half turnovers, and 26 for the game. Newman had 17 steals, with Lauren Wilson leading the way with eight. Newman led by as many as 23 points

Isaiah Figueroa (138 pounds) and Turner Garcia (160) finished in fourth place at the sectional. Figueroa dropped a 8-4 decision to Geneseo’s Andrew Rizzo in a semifinal, but recorded six takedowns in his wrestleback semi against Metamora’s Brayden Smith on his way to a 12-8 decision. Figueroa went on to take fourth place after falling in a 12-6 decision against Rochelle’s Eddie Villalobos for third. The Sterling junior barely made it out of regionals as a third-place winner, and used his role as an underdog to his advantage. Garcia had his high school career on the line after losing an 11-2 major decision to Washington’s Jared Head in a semifinal, but pinned Metamora’s Vinny Querciagrossa in 5:37 in a wrestleback semi to clinch his first state berth. Garcia led 6-2 in the third period before a reversal put him in position for the pin. Kuehl, Valentine win 1A sectional titles: The final area tally of state qualifiers out of the 1A Oregon Sectional included four Lena-Winslow/Stockton PantherHawks, three Fulton Steamers, two Morrison Mustangs, two Newman Comets, and one West Carroll Thunder wrestler. Kuehl scored a 3-1 decision win against Fulton’s Taylor Fleetwood in the 285-pound championship, while Valentine scored a 16-0 tech fall against Erie-Prophetstown’s Mat Garrison at 170 pounds. Jaden Rice (106) and Hunter Luke (138) also advanced for the PantherHawks, but both fell to Aurora Christian wrestlers in their title bouts.
