RiverWatch seeks volunteers to study impact of road salt Winter is quickly approaching and Illinois RiverWatch is hoping to train community members to monitor for chloride levels in local streams to identify areas where salt use is impacting water quality.

During the 2021 winter season, the Illinois Department of Transportation reported using more than 522,000 tons of salt on roadways in Illinois.

“Much of this salt ends up in local rivers and streams where it harms aquatic life,” said Danelle Haake, RiverWatch director and stream ecologist. “We are seeking volunteers who are willing to check on their local streams several times between October and May. Each monitoring trip could take as little as 15 minutes.”

The training will be virtually from 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 14. Register at https:// conta.cc/3TGZB5x RiverWatch staff will provide participants with the information needed to become a Winter Chloride Watcher.

“Our goal is to show whether cities’ efforts are working to lessen the impact of road salt entering streams as the cities adopt best management practices for the application of salt onto roadways,” Haake said.

NEWS BRIEFS Toastmasters to meet Nov. 15

The Dubuque Audubon Society is hosting a free bluebird presentation by Jessica Carryer, the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation’s director of education. Participants will learn about the ideal bluebird habitat and how to monitor nest boxes throughout the nesting season.

Many volunteers in the Tri-State area

have been monitoring bluebirds in an effort to support the population. Over the years, data has been collected on nesting locations, brood size, predation and fledglings.

The program will take place at 6 p.m. at the E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center at Mines of Spain State Park, 8991 Bellevue Heights Road, Dubuque, Iowa. RSVPs are not needed.

The Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation is a local nonprofit whose mission is to preserve and steward land and water for the well-being of all people and wildlife.

The Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation owns several preserves that are open to the public for hiking, wildlife viewing and picnicking.

Chadwick-Milledgeville C.U.S.D. 399 will host its annual Veterans Day Program at 10:15 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the Milledgeville High School gym.

The program will include musical performances by the Milledgeville High School Choir and Band, student essay presentations and a guest speaker.

At 9:45 a.m., the Milledgeville High School Student Council will host veterans and their families for coffee and doughnuts in the school cafeteria.

“This event is open to the public and we look forward to honoring the veterans of our community,” said Jody Mertz, district secretary in a news release.

Pearl City students busy in classrooms Pearl City kindergarten students recently visited Sarah Boyer’s Spanish class to learn about the Day of the Dead. The high school students did a writing activity and decorated skull cookies with the elementary students.

First graders from Nicole Merboth’s room are reading their books for AR to their sixth grade buddies from Janet Rauch and DJ Scott’s rooms.

“The students loved reading to the older students and showing off their abilities,” said Brent Chrisman, Pearl

Kindergarten students also learned about celebrating Halloween. Derrick Allen’s class was dressed up and ready for the parade. Allen’s students also worked on a STEM project. The students were making a bridge from basic materials that could hold weight and withstand wind forces.

“Jordan, Annebelle and Julian worked together to get their bridge ready for the test ... and their project passed,” Shipman said.

ehinton@shawmedia.com The Oregon Depot Museum’s newest arrival – a sleek vintage rail car – is now officially hers.

Ownership of the Silver View vintage rail car was officially transferred to the museum on Oct. 27, two months after the 75-year-old dome car arrived in Oregon.

“This is a culmination of two years of negotiations and planning by Mike Abernethy (the car’s owner), the Depot Museum Board and the City of Oregon,” Oregon Depot Museum Board President Roger Cain said.

Cain and the Depot Board are working on restoration plans that will bring the Silver View to as close as possible to its original glory.

“The entire Oregon community can’t thank Mike enough for entrusting them with fulfilling his dream of restoring Silver View,” Cain said.

The transfer was guided by Oregon City Administrator Darin DeHaan. Cain and the museum board are working on restoration plans to bring the car back to its original glory.

After keeping railroad enthusiasts waiting for weeks, the Silver View arrived in Oregon in a whirlwind of activity Aug. 21.

Cain is one of the Oregon Depot volunteers who was instrumental in getting the rail car moved to the Oregon Depot for its next restoration phase.

The signature Vista Dome car for Burlington’s famed Twin Cities Zephyr started its journey to Oregon when former Oregon resident Peter Medins, now of Woodstock, met Mike Abernethy, of St. Charles, the former owner of the Silver View. The two were on a rail tour when they started talking about Aber-

nethy’s ongoing restoration work on the sleek rail car that was sitting in Charles City, Iowa.

Medins, who remembers taking a trip from Oregon to Minneapolis on the Twin Cities Zephyr as a child, suggested Abernethy move the Silver View closer to St. Charles and proposed the Oregon Depot.

Earlier this year, officials from the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe agreed to replace and upgrade the “house” track – the track that once served the freight-

house – just west of the Oregon Depot for the Silver View to sit on.

That track, located north of the active BNSF freight line, is the Silver View’s new home during its next restoration phase.

The Oregon Depot Museum Board was offered a $5,000 matching donation from Medins for costs associated with moving the Silver View. The Oregon Depot Board matched his donation with funds given by local donors.

Silver View was built by the Budd Co. and delivered to the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe on Nov. 29, 1947. It immediately became one of the signature Vista Dome cars for the Burlington’s famed Twin Cities Zephyrs. The Twin Cities Zephyrs operated between Chicago and its namesake cities.

A fundraising campaign is underway to raise funds for the car’s restoration.

LANARK – The Newman Comets volleyball team hit their stride at the perfect time.

Since finding a spark midway through the second set of the regional final, the Comets haven’t dropped a set – and have now ridden that momentum all the way to Redbird Arena.

Newman jumped out to a huge lead in the first set, then rallied from an almost equally large deficit in the second set Nov. 4 in the Class 1A Eastland Supersectional to down Augusta Southeastern 25-19, 27-25.

The win sends the Comets (29-7-1) to the state tournament for the first time in program history and left the players shaking their heads in disbelief at what they’ve accomplished.

“A lot of us are over the moon right now,” junior hitter Jess Johns said.

“From where we started in the season and having tough losses like against Dixon and Oregon, and being at those low points, it’s definitely a very good feeling to be at the top.”

“I’m so excited and thrilled with the way we played,” junior middle Kennedy Rowzee said. “Our goal originally was just to get past regionals and we’ve really exceeded that limit. We’re just so excited to go to state.”

Newman will face a familiar foe in the semifinals: Freeport Aquin, which defeated Grant Park 25-19, 25-11 to win the Harvest Christian Academy Supersectional. Aquin defeated the Comets in straight sets in the semifinals of the Linda Ludwig Tournament in Lanark on Oct. 15.

Coincidentally, Newman was in the same gym Friday night to pick up the biggest win in program history.

The Comets couldn’t have scripted a better start, sprinting out to an 11-1 lead to open the first set. Rowzee had three kills and a block in that run, Johns added a pair of spikes, and Sam Ackman served three aces as Newman set the tone from the get-go.

“We were getting excited and kind of just shaking our nerves off in the beginning, then that long serving start helped so much,” senior setter Katie Grennan said. “Our nerves completely went away, we had energy, and we played like we knew we could.”

Southeastern slowly chipped away, but Newman had the answer to stop every run. Johns had two kills in a three-point span to give the Comets a 13-5 lead, then Grennan smacked a kill to make it 16-7. The Suns got as close as 17-16 on a Newman net violation, but were then called for an illegal hit before Rowzee smoked a kill, Grennan

served an ace, and Johns wrapped a pair of back-row kills around another Rowzee slam to make it 22-16.

Molly Olson then had a kill to keep Southeastern at bay, and Johns spiked a kill to finish out the set.

“I think it definitely was a big help to start off hot because it created the lead, and once we got the lead, even if we had a couple points where we started getting down a little bit, we knew that we still had that lead to work with,” Johns said. “I think that was really beneficial, especially with it being the first game, and that kind of got us settled in.”

The Comets led 4-2 to start the second set on an Olson dig that landed in the Suns’ court, then a kill by Rowzee and back-to-back slams by Johns. But Southeastern started to find its groove, as setter Abigail Shaffer rattled off five straight points – the final one an ace – to take control.

Johns had back-to-back kills to cut the deficit to 9-7, but kills by Abbey McMillen and Kenzie Griswold and an ace by Savannah Ramsey stretched the margin to 14-8. Rowzee and Makenzie Duhon had kills, but they were answered by a kill by Griswold and back-to-back slams by Amanda Stephens to put the Suns in front 19-10.

In the huddle, the Comets calmed one another down and talked about taking small steps to start the comeback.

“All we were saying out there on the court was win one point, then win the next and then the next,” Grennan said. “It’s very difficult to get that in your head, but we ended up pulling through.”

“Our main thing is to keep the energy up, keep the attitude up, and I think we really executed that today,” Ackman said. “Being down by nine points, we really emphasized that we needed to keep our energy up, and that’s what we did – and we came back to win.”

Johns had a kill, but it was answered by a Shaffer kill on the second touch to make it 20-11. But another Johns kill ignited the Newman run, and three hitting errors and a net violation by Southeastern in the next four points brought the Comets back to within 20-16 before another Johns kill and an Olson ace made it 20-18.

“We realized that a lot of errors were on tipping, not communicating, just on little things like not going at the ball,” Johns said.

The next stop for Newman: Redbird Arena in Normal for the 1A state tournament on Friday morning at 9 a.m.

“It’s going to be different, for sure, but we’re really excited for it,” Grennan said.

The Missiles were driving again late in the second quarter to retake the lead, but a tipped pass was intercepted.

On the ensuing possession, West Central’s Mason Carnes connected on a 45-yard scoring pass to Kaiden Droste with 33.6 seconds left to give the Heat a 22-14 lead at halftime.

“We were going in [to score] late in the first half and they made a nice play and tipped a pass for an interception,” Wroble said. “Then we stopped them on the first two plays and made them pass on third down, but we missed an interception. We stuffed their running back on fourth down, but somehow he managed to squirt out of there for the first down, and they score a long touchdown. That changed the game.

“I felt like we dominated the first half and we were still down by eight at halftime. Then in the second half, they found their running game and tightened the screws on defense and we couldn’t get anything going.”

Wroble said the wind played a factor, as Milledgeville likes to pass more than West Central, and mentioned there was one play in particular where Kacen Johnson was wide open behind

the defense, but the wind pushed Nye’s pass just a few yards too far down the field for an incompletion instead of a touchdown catch.

Droste scored his third rushing touchdown with 4:24 left in the third quarter for a 30-14 lead, then Carnes ran in from 3 yards out with 3:47 left in the game to finish the scoring.

Nye ran 20 times for 107 yards and threw for 19 yards and a score; he also had 13 tackles on defense.

Wilk ran for 69 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, and Aude caught three passes for 27 yards and the TD. Eric Ebersole led the Missiles with 15 tackles, and Cayden Akers (13) and Bruce Raymond (10) also had double-digit stops.

Droste finished with 28 rushes for 174 yards and three touchdowns, with scoring sprints of 34 and 46 yards in the first quarter.

Parker Meldrum ran 18 times for 74 yards for West Central, and Carnes ran for 62 yards and a touchdown while passing for 51 yards and a score.

Droste had all three receptions for the Heat.

“We made some mistakes in the second half, and they were getting three or four yards per carry and we had a hard time getting off the field on defense,” Wroble said. “Their running back is slippery and hard to put down, and there were several times when we were in the backfield and a play that should’ve been a loss turned into a five-yard gain for them. We just couldn’t come up with the big play when we needed it, and West Central did.”

The Heat will travel to Polo to take on the two-time defending I8FA state champion Marcos in a semifinal game this weekend.

Forreston rolls over Chicago Hope 44-16 in 1A playoff win

FORRESTON – After Johnny Kobler broke four tackles on an extrapoint conversion run that gave Forreston a 24-8 lead in a 1A second-round playoff game, a Chicago Hope Academy coach could be heard yelling to his defense, “We’re getting run over and pushed around.”

That’s how it was all afternoon with the more physical Cardinals.

Kobler, the 6-foot-3, 240-pound running back, scored three touchdowns and gained 182 yards on 26 carries to lead his team to a 44-16 over previously unbeaten Hope. It set up a rematch with Dakota (7-4) in the quarterfinals, a team that upset the Cardinals 34-28 on a last-minute touchdown in Week 4.

“We gave that game away, but Dakota knows they can compete with us,” Forreston coach Keynon Janicke said.

In a nod to NUIC supremacy, No. 1 Lena-Winslow and Fulton meet in the other northern-bracket quarterfinal.

All four league schools had decisive wins, but none more than Forreston (7-4) against an athletic Hope Academy team, which came into the game with a gaudy regular-season résumé, an interior defensive line that averaged 300 pounds and a Division-I receiver in Judah Mallette.

The Cardinals defense did not allow Mallette to catch a ball until the fourth quarter, and held quarterback Eddie Jenkins to only eight completions in 40 attempts.

“If you would have told me No. 1 [Mallette] wouldn’t have a catch until the fourth quarter, I wouldn’t have believed you,” Janicke said. “I thought we really contained the quarterback, too.”

The Cardinals defense was geared more to keep Jenkins from getting outside than they were of sacking him.

Often, he had plenty of time to throw, but nowhere to run and nobody open.

On the other side of the ball, the Forreston offensive line of Andrew Wells, Casey DeVries, Grant Johnson, Drew Dieterman, Alex Milnes, Ethan

Bocker and Colin Kuhn opened large holes against that massive Hope front to the tune of 347 yards rushing.

“They’re doing all the dirty work and don’t get the credit,” Janicke said.

Kuhn, who had a key 3-yard tackle for loss just before a Kaleb Sanders interception in the second quarter, was filling in for Kyler Ganz, who was out with a concussion.

The Cardinals took an early 16-0 lead on a pair of Kobler touchdowns. It was short fields both times, as Hope (10-1) botched an onside kick attempt to start the game and then had a four-

and-out on its next possession.

In the second quarter, Hope pulled within 16-8 on a touchdown set up by a desperation pass against the wind on fourth down.

“They had some playmakers,” Janicke said.

McKeon Crase ripped off a 33-yard touchdown run to make it 24-8. Two plays later on defense, he followed that up with an open-field tackle of Jenkins for no gain.

That would be all the scoring in the first half, even though Forreston had four possessions in a wild final four minutes. Kobler fumbled the ball away twice, the second on a strip after a 40-yard run. In between was Forreston’s only punt of the game.

“The only thing that will stop us is ourselves,” Janicke said at halftime.

Hope did drive into the red zone, but it was Quinten Frederick knocking down a fourth-down pass attempt, though he appeared to have an open field ahead of him had he chosen to intercept it instead.

With the rain, wind and cold picking up in the third quarter, the Cardinals weren’t fazed a bit. Sanders scored his 11th rushing TD of the season on the first possession after the break.

“Our kids embraced the weather.

We experienced rain on Friday,” Janicke said.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, it was Sanders with a 19-yard touchdown for a 36-8 lead. Kobler closed out the scoring for the final margin.

1A Football: Fulton shuts out Rockford Lutheran After a defensive slugfest in the first half Nov. 5, Fulton pulled away after halftime to defeat Rockford Lutheran 28-0 in their Class 1A second-round game in Rockford.

The teams played to a scoreless tie through the first quarter, and the Steamers took a 6-0 lead on Joel Ford’s 1-yard touchdown plunge with 3:30 left in the second period. The score was set up by Brayden Dykstra’s 47-yard pass to Ethan Price.

It was the defense that helped Fulton pull away in the second half. Baylen Damhoff intercepted a pass on Lutheran’s first possession of the third quarter, and that set up Ryan Eads’ 1-yard scoring run with 9:09 left in the third. Lukas Schroeder added a 1-yard touchdown run just three minutes later for a 20-0 lead, and Conner Sheridan put the game on ice with a 10-yard interception return for a touchdown with 6:50 remaining.

“We were opportunistic defensively, that’s for sure,” Fulton coach Patrick Lower said.

“We played with the wind at our back in the third quarter and pinned them deep. Baylen got the interception and we were able to take it in from there. I thought we owned the third quarter, and I felt good about where we

It was the second straight game in which the Steamers were able to pull away in the second half against a 1A team that plays primarily 3A and 4A teams in their conference during the regular season. A week after shutting out Aurora Christian in the second half of its first-round playoff game, Fulton shut out Lutheran – which plays in the rough-and-tumble Big Northern Conference – for the whole game.

Fulton returns home next week for a 1A quarterfinal game against Lena-Winslow in

one of two battles between NUIC teams.

Forreston hosts Dakota in the other North bracket quarterfinal.

8-Man Playoffs: Marcos hold on to knock off Ridgewood In a back-and-forth battle in Saturday’s Illinois 8-Man Football Association quarterfinal in Cambridge, the Polo Marcos managed to put together back-to-back scores to pull out a 38-32 win over Ridgewood.

Brock Soltow ran for 301 yards and five touchdowns on 32 carries, and the Polo defense got a key stop midway through the second half to pave the way to victory.

“It was back and forth, just a very well-played game by both sides,” Polo coach Ted Alston said. “They’re a really nicely coached team, and they’ve got some good players. We got a couple of stops and were able to put two scores together back-toback and that was the difference.

“It was a very entertaining game, a good hard-hitting game where both teams played hard. It was fun to be a part of.”

Soltow scored on a 51-yard run in the first quarter, then Ridgewood tied it up early in the second on a 24-yard touchdown run by Gavin McDonough. The Marcos took a 16-8 lead into halftime after a 39-yard scoring run

by Soltow, but Ridgewood tied it up early in the third period on a 1-yard TD run.

Soltow answered with a 33-yard scoring sprint, then the Marcos got a stop and Soltow tacked on a 47-yard touchdown run for a 32-16 lead with 8:51 to play. McDonough ran in from 15 yards to cut the Polo lead to 32-24, but Soltow had another 33-yard TD run with 3:09 remaining to stretch the lead back to 38-24.

Polo advances to the I8FA semifinals for the third straight season and will host West Central this weekend.

Cross Country More than 200 top high school runners battled the elements in each race at the IHSA Cross Country State Finals at Detweiller Park in Peoria on Nov. 5.

A heavy downpour persisted for the better part of an hour-and-a-half from the 9 a.m. start. High winds and a muddy course further added to the difficulty of the races as the wind-chill temperature was well below the low-to-mid 50s expectation and solid footing was harder to find.

Sterling’s Dale Johnson ran to second place in a field of 236 in the Class 2A boys race. His time of 15:06.35 trailed only Marion’s Dylon Nalley (14:44.62), and was five spots better than his seventh-place finish as a sophomore last year.

The Riverdale boys finished second as a team with 130 points.

EQUIPMENT MECHANIC The City of Sterling, Illinois is seeking applicants for the Equipment Mechanic position.
