Drop in population may affect council By MICHAEL MILLER For Shaw Media
Savanna Mayor Val Gunnarson told council members on June 28 that with the recent Savanna census coming in under 3,000 (technically under 2,800), the city potentially could only qualify for six council members by law. The mayor gave two courses of action for the council: Assemble a special committee to investigate the accuracy of the census numbers and pass a “safe harbor” ordinance, which would allow the city to operate under the current number of members until the next census. Both can be done at once, City Attorney Phil Jensen said. The council has until October to apply for the safe harbor extension, Jensen said. In other action, Gunnarson said that he, Building and Public Property Chairman Nick Law and Public Works Superintendent Brent Corey had looked at many of the city’s dilapidated properties and he renewed his commitment to deal with this issue. He said three categories of these buildings existed: buildings that were literally falling down, those that were in bad need of repair but were owned by people outside the city, and those of homeowners who were suffering under poverty. The mayor said MSA Engineering will be putting out a news release wherein the Illinois EPA has a short-term program to replace, free of charge, lead service water pipes, and information will be available on how to ascertain if your pipes are lead. The mayor said it is vital that everyone participate in the data collection on this matter as the funding is tied to the gathered data. He said it’s important that Savanna doesn’t miss this opportunity.
BRIEFS Hometown collections wanted for exhibit at Savanna Museum
Food Truck Party Vacation Bible School coming to Lanark
SAVANNA – The Savanna Museum & Cultural Center will be exhibiting “Hometown Collections” the first two weekends in August – Aug. 6-7 and 13-14. The events committee is urging residents to share their collections. “We invite you to share it so others can admire and enjoy it, too!” the committee said in a news release. “Any and all collections are welcome, from antiques to aprons, tools to toys and tea cups, postcards and hats.” Participants are asked to bring their cherished collections to the museum for setup on Thursday, Aug. 5, between 6 and 8 p.m. A table will be provided. Collectors are asked to identify their collection with a brief description telling how, when and why they began collecting items. Folks from the community and/or tourists passing through town will be able to stop in at the museum to view the treasures. Knowing the story of the collection will make the viewing all the more interesting. Hours for the exhibit are during the museum’s regular summer hours of noon to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The museum is located at 406 Main St., in Savanna. It is not required that you stay with your collection at all times. Museum volunteers will always be present during the open hours.
LANARK – Children are invited to join in the Food Truck Party Vacation Bible School at the Lanark community VBS on July 25-28. “We are on a roll with God and we want everybody to be part of it! The place to gather is Lanark’s First Brethren Church at 305 E. Locust St. (corner of East Locust and Rochester streets). VBS is from 9 to 11:30 a.m., but plan to stay a little longer on July 28 because a food truck will be here to serve a free hot dog lunch to kids, helpers and parents who are there at 11:30,” said a spokesperson for the event in a news release. “Each day VBS ‘chefs’ will learn some of the Bible stories about food and how God is always blessing us – not with just our daily bread, but with much more,” according to the release. “There will be songs to sing and dance to, Bible stories and activities, creative crafts, science experiments, fun games and snacks each day.” The Bible school is for children ages 3 years old through going into fifth grade. There is no cost, but a daily offering will be collected to help defray VBS costs. Registration is advised but is not necessary. Walk-ins are welcome. To get a registration form, call the Lanark United Methodist Church at 815-493-6300.

allowed and encouraged subordinate leaders under his command to commit whistleblower retaliation and commit safety infractions. “Managers are blatantly violating laws and refusing to adhere to local agreements, placing the hardworking staff in limbo with ever-changing policies and procedures that have done nothing but set USP Thomson ablaze, and over 60 staff have left under his tenure.” A message left with Bergami’s office Friday afternoon seeking comment was not returned. Bergami was appointed at the end of March by BOP Director Michael Carvajal, who earlier in the year announced his resignation after two years in the position. During Carvajal’s tenure, which ends when a new director is named, he was criticized for his handling of situations rising out of the pandemic. He also faced accusations of rampant abuse, graft and corruption throughout the system. On Friday, Durbin spent more than two hours touring the prison, talking with union leaders, inmates and Bergami. In a brief news conference afterward, Durbin noted that, with the departure of Carvajal – which Durbin called for publicly – a transition is in the offing and “it’s going to be a new day for the BOP.” He declined to speak directly about the union’s plea that Bergami be replaced, except to say that the prison administration and the union have worked successfully together in the past, and he’s “hoping

THOMSON – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin declined to comment Friday on a request to replace Warden Thomas Bergami as warden for the Thomson prison. The union that represents Thomson federal prison workers are citing low morale as a result of Bergami’s leadership. Union leaders say low morale has allowed those under his command to commit serious safety infractions, allowed retaliation against whistleblowers, and has sparked the loss of 60 staff members over the past four months. The letter to Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco came in the wake of a report released May 31 by National Public Radio and the Marshall Project outlining the purported abuse against inmates, including civil rights violations, Bureau of Prisons policy violations and potential criminal behavior, that have taken place since March 2020. Seven inmates have died since then, most being the result of homicide. That report prompted Illinois’ Democratic congressional delegation to send a letter of its own to the Justice Department’s Inspector General demanding an investigation into its allegations. It also resulted in a visit to the prison Friday by one of the delegates, U.S. Sen. Durbin, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. In the union letter, Jon Zumkehr, president of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 4070, wrote:

The federal prison is located north of Thomson on the west side of Route 84. “Warden Bergami has failed within his position of trust and has placed the staff, inmates and communities at risk. “In recent months we have had an abundance of serious incidents which took place under the Thomas Bergami leadership. Attempts to address these issues directly have gone unheeded and even to the extent of being covered up and/or distracted from the facts. “Those entrusted in the highest of positions under his leadership have failed and whistleblower protection and rights have gone ignored. Crop-dusting planes will circle area fields It’s that time of year again when we will start to see crop-dusting planes circling around fields in our area. We want to remind you of the benefits that aerial spraying provides to the crops in our area and to not be concerned when you see the planes overhead. Aerial spraying keeps the crops safer for us to eat and increases the farmer’s yield. Some people may be wary of pesticides, but they are less harmful than you may think. The American Cancer Society states: “Many kinds of pesticides are widely used in agriculture in the production of our food supply. People who eat more fruits and vegetables, which may contain trace amounts of pesticides, generally have lower cancer risks than people who eat fewer fruits and vegetables. Pesticides play a valuable role in sustaining our food supply. When properly controlled, the minimal risks pesticides pose are greatly overshadowed by the health benefits of a diverse diet rich in foods from plant sources.” One example of a pesticide that may be sprayed on crops is fungicide. The
Guest Column Sara Norman Summer Intern Crop Protection Research Institute said fungicide benefits to the United States are immense. The report, reviewed and endorsed by 38 commodity groups (including the National Cotton Council and United Soybean Board), said if left untreated, yields of most fruit and vegetable crops would plunge 50% to 95%. “Fungicides are pesticides that kill fungi and bacteria,” said Leonard Gianessi, CropLife Foundation director and lead author of the report. “If they aren’t killed, the fungi and bacteria cause plant diseases.” There are 20,000 species that release spores and bacteria. These spores float around and must infect plants to complete their life cycles. Without fungicides, and based on literature review, “we conclude uncontrolled diseases would significantly lower U.S. crop

The loss of 60 staffers at the continually understaffed facility concerns Zumkehr. “We have the hardest working staff in the BOP, and the most labor-intensive program (Special Management

they can establish a more cooperative relationship” in the future. As for the concerns raised by the Marshall report, Durbin acknowledged that an investigation is ongoing, and noted the difficulty involved in ensuring inmates are treated “in a humane but realistic way,” while also ensuring the safety of prison staff. “We will continue to watch it closely ... I can say that this is an exceptional situation. Prisons are dangerous places.” When it comes to the safety of Thomson inmates and staff, “I think this is a reasonable situation,” he said. The Marshall report’s most serious allegations include staff purposefully stoking tensions between cellmates, encouraging assaults against sex offenders and informants, and leaving men shackled to a bed for hours in their own urine and feces without food or water, the release said. The report also said staff laughed at the expense of a Jewish man they were guarding as he lay dying following an assault that occurred after he was placed in a recreation cage with known white supremacists, the release said. The letter to the Inspector General, signed by Durbin, Sen. Tammy Duckworth and U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, also asked that the investigation ”include the role that staffing shortages may have played in giving rise to the conditions in which the deaths and alleged abuses occurred.” The high-security Carroll County
