Thomson inmate indicted in 2020 stabbing death of cellmate By KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com
ROCKFORD – A third Thomson prison inmate is facing a federal murder charge and life in prison, this time in the death of his cellmate, a fellow Navajo who was stabbed repeatedly Nov. 27, 2020. Houston A. Clyde, 25, was indicted June 28 on charges of second-degree murder, assault resulting in serious bodily injury and possession of a weapon in the death of Edsel Aaron Badoni, 37, of Blue Gap, Arizona, U.S. District Attorney John R. Lausch Jr. said in a news release, which did not name the victim. Clyde, of Tuba City, Arizona, pleaded guilty in federal court in Arizona on July 9, 2018, to second-degree murder and was sentenced Sept. 24, 2018 to 17 years, 6 months. According to his plea agreement, Clyde killed a man on the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation on April 16, 2016, by hitting him multiple times in the head with a baseball bat. The court recommended at the time that Clyde “be placed in an institution that can address [his] mental health needs.” Badoni, also a member of the tribe and a resident of the Navajo reservation, was serving nearly 14 years for assault with a deadly weapon, assault resulting in serious bodily injury and discharging a firearm during a violent crime. Badoni had a history of discharging firearms in the victim’s neighborhood on the reservation, and when the victim approached him to tell him to stop, Badoni shot him in the chest, according to Arizona court records. Clyde’s indictment comes shortly after three Illinois Congressional representatives issued a call for an immediate investigation into the deaths of seven Thomson federal prison inmates that have occurred since March 2020, and accusations of “serious abuses” by

In a June 1 letter to the Justice Department’s Inspector General, U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth and U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, all Democrats, said a report by National Public Radio and the Marshall Project, if accurate, “describes conduct that would almost certainly contravene numerous BOP (Bureau of Prisons) policies, as well as infringing the civil rights of individuals in BOP custody and possibly violating federal criminal statutes” and “raises serious and troubling allegations about the conduct of staff at USP Thomson.” The report’s most serious allegations also include staff encouraging assaults against sex offenders and informants, and leaving men shackled to a bed for hours in their own urine and feces without food or water, the three said in a news release. It also said staff laughed at the expense of a Jewish man they were guarding as he lay dying following an assault that occurred after he was placed in a recreation cage with known white supremacists, according to the release.

Matthew Phillips, 31, of Texas, was found unresponsive with life-threatening head injuries the morning of March 2, 2020. He was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead three days later, the BOP reported at the time. In December, inmates Brandon C. Simonson, 37, and Kristopher S. Martin, 37, members of the Valhalla Bound Skinheads, beat Phillips to death because he was Jewish, according to their indictments, also handed down by a federal grand jury in Rockford. The two are charged with conspiracy to commit murder, second-degree murder and hate crime, all of which
carry up to life in prison, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury, which carries 10 years. According to the BOP, which also reported Badoni’s death, the other inmate deaths are: • Boyd Weekley, 49, of South Dakota, who was found unresponsive at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 3, 2020, after a fight with another inmate. • Two weeks later, on Dec. 18, 2020, Patrick Bacon, 36, was found unresponsive in his cell around midnight. His death was ruled a suicide, his mother, Shelley Bacon, told Sauk Valley Media. • On Feb 28, 2021, Shay Paniry, 41, an Israeli mobster from Studio City, California, was found in an unspecified area of the prison with life-threatening injuries. • On Dec. 15, around 10:30 p.m., Bobby Everson, 36, was found unresponsive following a fight. • James Everett, 35, was found unresponsive in an unspecified area of the prison and pronounced dead about 8:30 p.m. March 15. No information on a cause of death was released, but Bureau of Prison officials have confirmed it is a suspected homicide. The Carroll County U.S. prison has 918 inmates, about 440 fewer than in March 2020, and despite repeated efforts by the local chapter of the American Federation of Government Employees, is not fully staffed.

The Savanna City Council accepted with regret the resignation of Ward One Alderman Peter King at its June 28 meeting. King will be relocating outside of his ward. Mayor Val Gunnarson thanked King for his service and said a new council member will need to be appointed. Gunnarson made some opening remarks, detailing his vision for the operation of the council and mayor going forward. Gunnarson was sworn in last month, ending two months of uncertainty regarding who would be mayor following former mayor Chris Lain’s resignation after he moved to Mississippi. On June 28, Gunnarson said he wanted the council to join him in “trying to make our gorgeous little

and the Quad Cities. The council voted in favor of moving forward with a resolution supporting a feasibility study and expressing Savanna’s interest in such a project. A resolution expressing interest will be voted on at the next council meeting. Payette said doing so would not yet involve any financial obligation from the city (the study would be covered by a federal and state grant) and that any potential financial contributions from the city would be down the road, assuming the city agrees to move forward and the project ever comes to fruition. He also said “this is all pretty high concept. I’m not sure it’s all going to be feasible the way it’s drawn on the map.” He added that the particular funding source for this project had a “limited budget.” The council also: • Approved a resolution permitting the Savanna Rotary Club to place a drinking fountain, donated by Elkay Manufacturing, at the site of the Savanna Veterans Memorial. The location will need to be approved by the Public Works Superintendent, with all maintenance expenses being borne by the Rotary besides installation, and with the Rotary being responsible for restoring the installation site. The mayor thanked Elkay for its generosity in donating the $16,000 fountain. • Approved resolutions authorizing the city to enter into banking relationships with TBK Bank, Savanna-Thomson Bank and First Savanna Savings Bank. This is due to the changeover in the position of mayor and allowing him to sign documents.

ELECTION 2022
By KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com
Republican Esther Joy King and Democrat Eric Sorensen will face off in November in what will be a closely watched race for Illinois’ 17th Congressional District. In a statement released on Twitter, King, an East Moline attorney, thanked her supporters and called it “the honor of my lifetime to run to represent the people of this district. “We have a major fight ahead of us – a fight to ensure that people can fill their gas tanks and grocery carts without dipping into their rent money or retirement savings,” she wrote. King defeated fellow East Moline resident and insurance broker Charles Helmick Jr. Sorensen bested five other candidates to win the berth. He, too, thanked supporters. “From the first day, this campaign has been built on three pillars: trust, science and communication,” he said on his Facebook page. “Talking with voters across the district, they agree, we need more science and less politics in their next representative.” Should he win on Nov. 8, Sorensen, a longtime TV meteorologist before
retiring to run for this office, would be the state’s first openly gay Congressional member. It will be one of the most hotly contested races nationwide as the GOP pushes to regain a Esther Joy King majority in the U.S. House. The winner will take the seat of outgoing Democratic U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos of East Moline, who announced in April 2021 that she would not seek reelection after her fifth term in office, prompting a small avalanche of nine hopefuls to step up. (One, Democrat Linda McNeely of Rockford, did not survive a challenge to the legitimacy of her petitions.) Bustos issued this statement: “Congratulations to Eric Sorensen on his victory tonight. Illinoisans deserve a representative who will fight for working families, help build our local economy and continue to lift up Midwestern voices. Eric will do that. “This November will be a historic election. Simply put, our freedoms and democracy are on the line. While we
Eric Sorensen
were lucky to have a great crop of candidates vying for the Democratic nomination, now is the time to come together and work to help keep this seat blue in November.” The GOP winner never appeared to
be in question. King had roundly outpaced Helmick and by noon Wednesday, June 29, with 95% of the votes counted, the tally was 30,749 for King and 14,017 for Helmick, The Associated Press reported. That’s 68.7% to 31.3%. This will be King’s second run for the Congressional seat. She was the Republican nominee in 2020, coming in a close second to Bustos with 48% to 52% of the vote. King announced her intention to run again only an hour after Bustos said she was bowing out. Helmick also had been a primary candidate in 2020, but withdrew. With 95% of the Democratic votes counted, Sorensen garnered 14,450 votes, or 37.9%. Former state representative Letisa Wallace of Rockford had 8,889 votes, or
23.1%; Rockford Alderman Jonathan Logemann had 5,530, or 14.5%; Rock Island County board member Angie Normoyle had 4,724 votes, or 12.4%; community activist Marsha Williams of Channahon had 2,633, or 5.9%, and cannabis lobbyist Jacqueline McGowan of Palos Hills had 1,985 votes, or 5.2%, the AP reported. In Whiteside County, where all 60 precincts were counted by 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, the unofficial numbers were 3,031 for King and 1,001 for Helmick in the GOP race, or 75.2% to 24.8%. They were 1,247, or 57% for Sorensen, a clear local favorite, 377 for Logemann, or 17.2%; 206 for Normoyle, or 9.4%; 154 for Wallace, or 7.3%, and 104 each, or 4.7%, for Williams and McGowan, the clerk reported. The newly redrawn 17th District, with a population of more than 700,000, encompasses all or parts of Carroll, Whiteside, Winnebago, Stephenson, Rock Island, Knox, Mercer, Henry, Peoria, Fulton, Tazewell, McDonough and McNeal counties, running from Galena in the north to Astoria in the south. It is heavily rural, encompassing around 10,000 family farms, but also includes the cities of Rockford, Peoria, Moline and Rock Island.
All 35 candidates advance to Nov. 8 Whiteside County Board race By KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com
MORRISON – As is required after every U.S. Census, all 27 Whiteside County Board seats – nine in each district – were up for election Tuesday, June 28. In all, 24 incumbents faced off against 11 newcomers. Because neither the Democratic nor the Republican races had more than nine contestants each, all candidates advanced to the Nov. 8 general election, where only the top nine vote-getters in each district will be elected, regardless of party affiliation. Democrat William McGinn, 84, of Sterling, did not file in District 1 after serving 40 years on the board. In District 3, Republican Howard “Bud” Thompson, 92, of Prophetstown, did not seek reelection after 12 years, and Charles Brown Jr., 60, of Fenton, is not running after serving two years. Former County Board member
Terry Woodard, who served three and a half years, from May 2005 through November 2008, and Douglas E. Crandall, who served a little less than five and a half years, from July 2015 through November 2020, are running in Districts 1 and 3, respectively. With nine candidates total, the District 3 race is uncontested, so Crandall will be elected. Both District 1 appointees also are seeking voter approval. Republican Thomas Witmer was appointed in August to replace longtime member Ruth Stanley, who died June 15. Democrat Joan Padilla was appointed in February to replace Will Lee, who resigned from the board that month. They are among nine Democrats and five Republicans seeking election in District 1; in District 2, those numbers are seven and five. There will be no contested race in District 3 because only two Democrats and seven Republicans filed. Six of the seven are incumbents; the sev-
enth is Republican Brian Melton, Morrison’s chief of police. The unofficial totals:
