in the U.S Army from 1955 until retiring as a Sergeant Major in 1984. He continued his military career by teaching ROTC at Lane Robert E. Kucinski, Tech H.S (2yrs) and Lake View H.S (14 yrs) in age 86, passed away peacefully in his home Chicago, Illinois. He proudly wore his uniform for 45 years. VOICES to host 40th celebration on June 30 FREEPORT – VOICES of Stephenson County is marking its 40th anniversary with a community celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, June 30, at Freeport’s Lincoln Mall.

The free event is planned for the mall parking lot and will feature a fun atmosphere with a light lunch, games for the young and young at heart, door prizes and history displays. Events will be moved indoors in case of inclement weather.

“It is important to commemorate and celebrate this milestone because, throughout its history, VOICES has adapted and evolved as the needs of our survivors have changed,” said Beth Maskell, VOICES executive director. “We are looking forward to the next 40 years and beyond and are excited to celebrate with the community.”

The event also will feature free admission to the first 50 children to the Children’s Hands-On Museum in the mall.

A special education program aimed at kindergarten-age children will be available in the museum during this time.

VOICES started as part of the

YWCA in 1982 with a focus on serving survivors of domestic violence.

It emerged as a separate organization in 2005 under the name VOICES DV. It began assisting survivors of sexual assault and abuse in 2014 and became known as VOICES of Stephenson County.

In 2021, VOICES made history by opening the first shelter in Stephenson County dedicated solely to survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

VOICES offers individuals and families survivor-centered services and support such as counseling, advocacy and education to treat and prevent domestic violence and sexual assault and abuse.

It also operates the VOICES Survivors Shelter and VOICES Book Nook.

CARROLL COUNTY FARM BUREAU I hope everyone survived the heat wave we had this week! It’s nice to see the sun out every day, but it sure makes me happy to be in an air-conditioned office during the days when it feels like over 100.

Speaking of warm weather and summertime, I wanted to tell everyone that order forms for peaches are here!

We’ve been getting lots of orders so far but wanted to remind everyone to order theirs before Aug. 1. The price this year is $42 per box for farm bureau members and $47 per box for non-members.

We also are selling a peach cobbler mix for $7 per bag. What a great and delicious way to put those peaches to use!

Peaches are personally one of my favorite fruits in the summer, and although I can eat a whole peach for dessert, making peach cobbler would be a great way to eat it, too!

••• Last week, we were given the opportunity to speak in Chris Dertz’s driver’s ed course about ag safety in the classroom at Eastland High School. I put together a presentation, and one of our Young Leaders, Jeremy, brought in his tractor trailer for a demonstration.

Living in northwest Illinois, it is very important to teach young drivers how to navigate the roads with large equipment before they get on the road themselves.

Although some of the information seems like common sense to those of us who have been driving, it may be new to those who are learning how to drive.

Getting to sit in a truck to see how much truck drivers can’t see is a valuable learning experience, and hopefully the safety tips we provided will help students navigate the roads in a safer way.

Carroll County Farm Bureau members can place up to two free classified ads per week, with a limit of 250 characters per ad (not including spaces).

Ads are limited to personal or farm items for sale/wanted to buy, or farm labor or services available or wanted. No ads for the sale or rental of real estate, garage sales or commercial businesses will be accepted.

I personally didn’t get a hands-on experience like this when I was learning driver’s ed in high school, so it was awesome to be a part of it.

••• Last week we also kicked off our summer library programs with our June program at the Thomson Public Library. Between two separate sessions, we had about 25 kids attend to learn about the Water Cycle.

I was happy to help out. All of the

kids were so excited to learn more. And the ties to agriculture helped them to understand why water is so important.

We will be continuing our library programs at Savanna, Mt. Carroll, Milledgeville and Lanark the last week of June. Don’t forget to sign your kids up to attend at your local library!

West Carroll FFA members attend State FFA Convention Thirteen West Carroll FFA members recently attended the 94th Illinois State FFA Convention on June 14-16 in Springfield. Gran Fonda Tour Against Cancer set for June 25 at Oakdale Nature Preserve FREEPORT – Area cyclists and families are invited to enjoy healthy exercise and see some of the area’s most beautiful roads on their own or as part of a safely socially distanced group at this year’s 15th Gran Fonda Tour Against Cancer on Saturday, June 25.

Dave Fonda, the founder and inspiration for the event, loved cycling and his community. He began the fundraiser in 2007, dedicated to parlaying his passion into a cause that could help those fighting cancer.

Fonda lost his battle with cancer in 2018 and the event has been renamed in his honor. A Gran Fondo – Italian for “Big Ride” – is a timed long-distance road cycling ride officially defined by the Italian Cycling Federation as being at least 75 miles long.

The in-person event will begin at 8 a.m. June 25 at the pavilion at Oakdale Nature Preserve, 4433 S. Cranes Grove Road in Freeport.

Registration begins at 7 a.m., and the ride begins at 8 a.m.

Riders can choose from various routes or simply enjoy a fun bike ride of any length dedicated to those who are battling or have battled cancer.

Virtual participants are asked to complete their chosen routes by Sunday, June 26.

In lieu of a registration fee, participants and supporters are invited to donate to the Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.

The city of Savanna has a new mayor, duly elected by unanimous vote of the city council.

Val Gunnarson was sworn in by City Clerk Betsy Kinder, ending two months of uncertainty regarding the city’s mayor.

Alderman Pat Sanchez, who has been serving as mayor since Chris Lain’s departure two months ago, read a brief statement before the vote, commenting that while he felt either he or Alderman Jeff Griswold could make effective mayors, he wanted to remove his name from nomination and nominate Gunnarson.

At the previous two city council meetings, the council had voted on an acting mayor to replace Lain, who relocated to Mississippi. Both votes tied, with four votes for Sanchez and four for Griswold.

In his comments after taking over as mayor, Gunnarson said he was a “strong believer in law enforcement” which he said “holds our society together.”

He urged council members to help him “do all we can to make our little town a better place for families.”

Gunnarson said he also wanted to “focus on the terribly rundown properties in town” and make the city more attractive to potential business owners.

He praised the department heads, including Police Chief Jeff Doran, who he said was “an outstanding police chief,” and said he looked forward to working with all the council members, who he said did him a great honor.

Gunnarson is a retired judge of the 15th Circuit Court in Carroll County.

He was elected to the position in 2002 and retained in 2008. He was again retained in 2014 for a term that expired in December 2020.

He said he had spoken with both Sanchez and Griswold, as well as most council members, prior to the meeting.

He also said his family had moved to Savanna when he was just 18 months old and that he cared deeply about Savanna.

City Attorney Phil Jensen commented that while Savanna currently has Alderman Jocelyn Boyd as Mayor Pro Tem, in actuality it’s custom to have a pro tem mayor elected during the times when a mayor will be absent, as opposed to having a “sitting” Pro Tem and that Boyd will be asked to resign from the position so the new paradigm can be followed.

Snider enjoys magical postseason run

dwussow@shawmedia.com FORRESTON – Before the start of every season, Forreston softball coach Kim Snider asks her players to write down their team goals and individual goals for the year.

Usually, the answers to these prompts vary somewhat, but this year the team goal was unanimous – and didn’t require a written reminder.

“This group came to me and said, ‘We don’t need to write down what we want to do as a team this year.

We want to go to state,’ ” Snider said. “I think they were already determined at the beginning of the year to make it down to state this year, and I think they believed in that goal every step of the way.”

The Cardinals’ high aspirations and hard work paid off, as they went 23-5 through the postseason, reached the state tournament for the first time in program history and placed third at state in the Class 1A field with a 4-2 win over Newark at Louisville Slugger Sports Complex in Peoria.

Forreston had two eight-game winning streaks this season, and won four of its final five games in the final at-bat during the run to state.

For leading the Cardinals to an unprecedented season, Snider is Sauk Valley Media’s 2022 Softball Coach of the Year.

Looking at the historic Forreston softball season from a macro perspective, resilience was a recurring theme.

Its last four wins on the way to state were achieved in come-from-behind fashion, with the last three

being won on a walk-off hit.

In the sectional semifinal, the Cardinals prevailed 2-1 over Pearl City on a Rylee Broshous 12th-inning home run. In the sectional title game against Dakota, Breanna Kloster blasted a bases-loaded double in the bottom of seventh to win 8-7. In the supersectional tilt versus Biggsville West Central, Forreston erased a 4-0 deficit, then won 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh on an Ella Ingram home run.

And in two of those games – the sectional semifinal and the supersectional – Brooke Boettner hit a tying home run in the bottom of the seventh. That unshakable resolve is what made this year’s team so special, Snider said.

“Their resilience. Each time we had a comeback win, it was a different kid that came through when we needed them,” she said. “I think what it really came down to is they all wanted to do whatever they could for each other and bring home the victory. And I think that’s what made this group so special.

“My entire team this year is an extraordinary group of kids who truly believed in one another.”

One of the driving forces behind the Cardinals’ great improvement this year was their 3-2 regional championship loss to Pearl City last year. Losing a close game on their home field left a bad taste in their mouths, Snider said.

“The girls didn’t like the feeling of Pearl City winning on our field, and they were definitely determined to not let that happen again, and they sure didn’t,” she said.

ehinton@shawmedia.com POLO – The weather was perfect and the water was very wet at the Polo Fire Department’s Water Fights on Saturday during Town & Country Days.

First, kids stepped up to the temporary tank in front of the fire station and tried to push a big plastic ball across the water before their opponents did.

Kylee Diaz, 12, of Polo, didn’t let a broken left wrist stop her from competing.

“I had to just use my right hand, but it was fun,” she said. Kylee and her sister Leeann, 14, were helping run the kids’ event because their dad, Brandon King, is a Polo firefighter.

Trent Jordan, 10, of Milledgeville, also had a dad in the hunt.

“My dad’s a firefighter, so I thought I’d try this, too,” Trent said.

After the kids’ event ended, Trent’s dad, Heath, stepped up with the Chadwick crew to try to best teams from Polo and Hooppole.

Trent watched from the shade along the sidelines with his family as his dad’s team held on in one of the matches to win.

When asked if he had any pointers for his dad, Trent said, “No, he did OK.”
