Durbin wants new leader for federal prisons after report details abuses at Thomson Prison

ttaylor@shawmedia.com U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois has called for the attorney general to dismiss the head of the nation’s prisons after reports of deaths and abuses at the federal penitentiary at Thomson.

Michael Carvajal, director of the Bureau of Prisons, had announced his resignation in the weeks after a November 2021 report by the Associated Press detailing employee misconduct throughout the prison system.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has not appointed a successor and Carvajal remains on the job.

Durbin, who is the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, reiterated his call on June 9 for a new director after the latest report by National Public Radio and the Marshall Project details the deaths of seven inmates and allegations of abuses by staff at Thomson.

AFGE Local 4070 President Jon Zumkehr, who represents federal prison workers, sent out a news

release on Thursday that said it supported an investigation into the allegations and that Durbin and U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth had been invited to visit the prison.

In his Senate address, Durbin said: “One investigation after another has revealed a culture of abuse, mismanagement, corruption, torture and death that reaches all the way to the top.”

LEANELLA ROSALIE KLOEPPING Born: August 10, 1933 Died: June 5, 2022 Leanella Rosalie Kloepping, 88, of Lanark, IL, died peacefully at home on Sunday, June 5, 2022.

She was born on August 10, 1933, at home in Mt. Carroll, IL, to Aaron and Valida (Frederick) Pieper. She attended elementary school at Loran Country School and Renter School in Pearl City, and graduated from Lanark High School. She also completed some college courses. On June 1, 1951, the same day she graduated from high school, she married Duane E. Kloepping in Lanark, IL, at the home of his parents, John and Evelyn Kloepping. They were married for 62 years. In addition to being a homemaker, she helped Duane run a shoe store in Lanark, and

was the General Manager and Vice President at Hygienic Fabrics in Lanark for 29 years.

She was a member of Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren, where she taught for 50 years and served on commissions at one time or another.

Survivors include her sons: David and Michael (Mary) Kloepping; grandchildren: Crena (Jason) Hamilton, Christopher (Katie) Kloepping, John Kloepping, and Sarah Kloepping; three great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; and sisters: Sandra Thacher and Beverly Derrer.

She was preceded in death by her husband Duane Kloepping and her parents.

Funeral service was held on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at 2 PM, with visitation from 10 AM until time of service, at Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren, 14395 Brethren Rd, Lanark, IL. Interment was at Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

the federal system in 2019, was supposed to alleviate overcrowding within the federal system, but “the reality, sadly, has been the exact opposite.”

According to the Marshall Project, five inmates were killed by other inmates and two died by suicide.

“Those deaths are just a snapshot of the grim reality of this facility, the deadly grim reality,” Durbin said.

Durbin said he, Duckworth and U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, whose 17th District includes Thomson, asked Michael Horowitz, inspector for the Justice Department, to launch an investigation into prison. Horowitz confirmed to Durbin that an investiga-

tion is underway.

Durbin requested that the attorney general appoint a “reform-minded” director or appoint an acting director.

“We need to act before another inmate dies in the custody and care of this federal government,” Durbin said.

Durbin said that his committee will be holding a hearing on the Bureau of Prisons. Some of the allegations involve the use of restricting housing within the system.

The inmate deaths: • James Everett, 35, was found unresponsive in an unspecified area of the prison and pronounced dead about 8:30 p.m. March 15. No information on a cause of death was released.

• Matthew Phillips, 31, of Texas, was found unresponsive with life-threatening head injuries the morning of March 2, 2020. He was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead three days later.

In December, two inmates said to be white supremacists were indicted on murder and hate crime charges in the death of Phillips, who was Jewish.

ere at the office, we are excited for some warmer weather coming! During June, we get to kick off some of our library programs and continue working toward more of our events over the summer, and we are excited to continue to share more about those events.

On Monday, June 6, I was able to attend an intern seminar at Illinois Farm Bureau’s home office in Bloomington with other fellow Farm Bureau interns.

It was a great experience to meet with other county interns, as well as some interns from the home office.

It also was great to learn even more about what Illinois Farm Bureau is and a little about their history.

One of the interns I met was a student in law school doing her internship as a law clerk at the Farm Bureau. She lived in Arkansas for law school, but grew up in Illinois and always had a passion for ag law.

Hearing about her experiences opened all our eyes to how much more involved the Illinois Farm Bureau is in their work than other states have. It was a cool opportunity for her to be able to promote the Illinois Farm Bureau and show how much more support they

In speaking about how much more Illinois Farm Bureau does, we were able to listen to a session about how they are working to bring more support to specialty farmers in Illinois.

Listening to this session, I realized how much broader agriculture in Illinois is. Growing up in Illinois, all I knew agriculture to be is corn and soybeans (what my dad farms) and some livestock.

Agriculture has so much more to it than what we see in northwest Illinois, and it was awesome to hear the efforts Illinois Farm Bureau is taking to give these farmers support as well.

We learned more about their professional members as well – and how they are growing their platform of members who may not make income from farming directly but are in a business that relates directly back to agriculture.

Not only was it good for me to learn more about the work I am doing here at the Carroll County Farm Bureau, but it has allowed me to meet with other college students and hear their perspectives, as well as continue to navigate through possible careers in my future.

As a college student, it really is important to expand out and see what possibilities I have when I will graduate in two years, and this seminar opened

that up to even more careers I didn’t know about.

As June continues, we also want to continue to celebrate dairy month.

Another fun fact about dairy is that all 50 states have dairy farms and collectively they produce about 21 billion gallons of milk each year.

It is no secret on the benefits that milk provides, and the statistic that 99% of U.S. households purchase milk shows that we really don’t live without it!

At Nachusa Grasslands, tiny ornate box turtles share their secrets FRANKLIN GROVE – The Chicago Zoological Society conducted one of the largest health assessments of box turtles in North America in May at the Nachusa Grasslands near Franklin Grove.

The preserve is home to a population of ornate box turtles, a species threatened by human encroachment and the degradation of its natural habitat.

Matt Allender, a clinic veterinarian with the Chicago Zoological Society who also is director of the University of Illinois Wildlife Epidemiology Laboratory, was part of the assessment. He has been a part of the research for 16 years.

He and his veterinary students were assisted by Boykin spaniels, which are specially trained “turtle dogs.”

The dogs are trained to locate box turtles, which are 4 to 5 inches in length that can be difficult to spot in tall grasses. On average, the dogs can find about 2.5 turtles per search hour. A trained biologist usually takes about four hours. On this occasion, the dogs – owned by John Rucker – found 15 live turtles.

Once retrieved, the researchers performed health assessments on the turtles.

This included drawing blood, taking swabs and

size measurements.

The data is used to establish more effective conservation protocols.

One of the things researchers are looking for are viruses that could affect the already vulnerable turtle population. Right now, ranavirus infections are causing deadly outbreaks among a variety of reptile species.

Since the project began in 2006, data has been collected on about 500 ornate box turtles and more than 3,500 eastern box turtles at sites in Illinois and Tennessee.

‘Lend Me a Tenor’ opens at Timber Lake Playhouse

MOUNT CARROLL – Timber Lake Playhouse will continue its 2022 season with the slapstick comedy “Lend Me A Tenor,” opening Thursday, June 16, for a two-week run.

With a nod to the style of Marx Brothers classics such as “A Night at the Opera,” the play, which takes place in 1934, is filled with manic disagreements, elaborate subterfuges and broadly telegraphed attempts at seduction.

“Tenor has all the elements of a great farce,” said TLP Executive Director, Dan Danielowski, who also directs “Lend Me A Tenor.”

“An absurd plot, unique characters, fast action and wit are all featured prominently in the show.”

The show centers around Henry Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company.

They are primed to welcome world-famous singer Tito Merelli, known as Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as the star of the opera.

What ensues is a series of mistaken identities, misinterpreted situations,

and double entendres.

“Lend Me A Tenor” is directed by Dan Danielowski, who also provides the scenic design. Light design is by Cameron Strandin, costume design by Jade Zhang, props design by Callie Hester and sound design by Tyler Malone.

Chelsey Steinmetz is the production stage manager.

The cast features Darren Mangler as Saunders, Colin McGonagle as Max, Emily Chaviano as Maggie, Margot Frank as Maria, Bryant Howard as the bellhop, Jodie Langel as Diana, Marcia Sattelberg as Julia and Peter Lake as Tito Merelli.

“A sensation on Broadway and in London’s West End, this madcap, screwball comedy is guaranteed to leave you teary-eyed with laughter,” Danielowski said.

• Two weeks later, on Dec. 18, 2020, Patrick Bacon, 36, was found unresponsive in his cell around midnight.

He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

His death was ruled a suicide, his mother, Shelley Bacon, told Sauk Valley Media.

• On Feb 28, 2021, Shay Paniry, 41, an Israeli mobster from Studio City, California, was found in an unspecified area, with life-threatening injuries.

• On Dec. 15, 2021, about 10:30 p.m., Bobby Everson, 36, was found unresponsive following a fight. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Cardinals score twice in top of eighth to win another postseason game in final at-bat

bhoxsey@shawmedia.com PEORIA – The Forreston softball team capped a magical postseason run with one final thrilling victory on June 4, scoring twice in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Newark 4-2 in the third-place game at the Class 1A state tournament at the Louisville Slugger Complex in Peoria on June 4.

After the Cardinals (23-5) saw Newark tie the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth, they retook the lead in the eighth before senior left-hander Kara Erdmann closed out a complete-game effort by retiring the Norsemen side in order to finish off the victory in the season finale.

It was the fourth time in the last five postseason games that Forreston won by scoring runs in its final at-bat.

“This game was a dogfight. Our girls really wanted to end the season on a win and their goal was to leave it all on the field,” Forreston coach Kim Snider said. “They definitely did that.

We had some phenomenal defense, timely hitting and really good pitching. I felt every girl on this team came in with a great mindset today of ‘Forget yesterday and focus on what we have to do today.’”

In the Forreston eighth, Erdmann beat out a one-out infield single off Newark pitcher Kodi Rizzo and advanced to second on an error. Rylee Broshous then stepped in and lined the first pitch she saw to left to score Erdmann and make it 3-2; Broshous moved to second on the throw home.

“It was a good pitch, but an inside pitch that I knew I had to be quick on,” said Broshous, who ended a 12-inning sectional semifinal win over Pearl City with a walk-off homer earlier in this postseason. “My mentality in that situation was to hit the first good pitch I saw and not get behind in the count. I had a little bit of our Pearl City game going through my mind. ... I didn’t

Her bread-and-butter is her curveball running in on the righthanded hitters, especially with two strikes, and that’s what we went with a lot today.

“She was pretty special today, all season and her whole career for us. It was great to see her end her high school career here at state with a win.”

“[Schofield] is a great pitcher, but it was a little frustrating for the first few innings,” Erdmann said. “We all know that every girl in our lineup can put the bat on the ball. But some of us do better against pitchers that throw harder like she does, but we were even having some trouble. I think the fact that a couple of us were able to get a third look at her in the sixth helped.”

“This group never, ever quits,” Snider said. “We had two outs and two strikes on our batter in the supersectional and came through with a walkoff win. They just don’t give in.”

Erdmann said she and her teammates were thrilled to put their stamp on the Forreston program by making the team’s first trip to the state softball finals in school history.

“This whole experience has been amazing for all of us,” she said. “This team is a family, everyone is included.

This has been a great way to end my high school playing career.”

Newark coach Tim Schofield was proud of the way his Norsemen played in both games at state, and was happy to see them finish the season battling against another good team.

“I think we were all a little more relaxed coming in here today,” he said.

“We had some nerves on Friday with playing the returning state champions, and a first time in this position in the state finals. I feel today [Forreston] was able to get a couple more key hits than we did, and we had a couple of hit balls that could have easily been hits if not for great defensive plays by them.

“It was really just two pretty good teams battling.”

In the 1A state championship game, Illini Bluffs won its second straight title with a 1-0 walk-off win over Casey-Westfield.

Jo-Carroll Energy annual meeting held in Fulton FULTON – An estimated 200 plus co-op members, employees and associates of Jo-Carroll Energy (JCE) gathered to celebrate “The Power of Co-op Membership” during the cooperative’s annual meeting of members June 2 at the Fulton High School in Fulton.

During the business session, three directors were reelected to the Jo-Carroll Energy board by a vote of acclamation. Board directors Jerry Meyer, District 1; Joe Mattingley, District 2; and Dan Tindell, District 4; were all unopposed in their bids for reelection.

All directors serve three-year terms.

Members also approved a bylaw amendment revising how directors may participate in monthly board meetings, providing the option to meet virtually or participate by telephone.

It was noted that during the pandemic, technology was used to provide the board with more flexibility to continue essential cooperative business.

In keeping with the meeting theme, JCE president and CEO Mike Casper opened his remarks noting the purpose of rural electric cooperatives (formed after the enactment of the Rural Electrification Act in 1936) – to raise the standard of rural living.

“Eighty plus years later, Jo-Carroll Energy, along with more than 800

other electric cooperatives, continue as not-for-profit, trustworthy and community-focused energy and now high-speed internet service providers,” Casper said. “Electric co-ops are built by and belong to the communities they serve. We are focused on people instead of profits to make our communities stronger.”

Casper added that the co-op also provides value-added services that empower members, businesses and communities to be more successful.

Providing an example, he noted how JCE, with the assistance of nearly $25 million in grant awards, is accelerating buildout of high-speed fiber internet in northwest Illinois.

Just like 80 years ago when electricity empowered rural America to raise the standard of living, JCE and its Sand Prairie broadband division are now empowering members to raise the standard of rural living with highspeed internet service, Casper noted.

“Our vision is to enhance your quality of life providing value-added services to the businesses, communities and member-consumers that we serve,” Casper said. “The power of co-op membership is your success.

Board president David Senn also spoke about the importance of the co-op and touched on electric generating capacity and the need for additional base-load generation.

“When and when not to use energy will play an important role in helping to curb the need for adding new generation,” Senn said.

Noting that the cooperative does not produce but purchases electricity, he said the members of the generation

and transmission cooperatives have tasked the G&Ts with providing longterm affordable, reliable and environmentally sustainable electricity. “Our providers are doing their best to move to cleaner generation while monitoring the reliability needs of the grid system,” he said.

Guest speaker Dave Schryver, president & CEO of the American Public Gas Association (APGA), discussed the natural gas price spikes in February 2021 caused by extreme cold weather and major increases in demand that hit public gas systems particularly hard.

He outlined responses to the high prices including outreach to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the Department of Energy, Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the president and Congress. He also noted safeguards are being identified and put in place to prevent such an event in the future.

Schryver said natural gas has a role in America’s clean energy future, citing it is reliable and abundant, a domestic source of energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Jo-Carroll Energy is a nonprofit distribution cooperative owned and controlled by the members it has reliably served since 1939. Headquartered in Elizabeth, the cooperative currently serves about 27,000 electric, natural gas and/or broadband internet accounts in Jo Daviess, Carroll, Whiteside and Henry counties.
