JUDITH A. (MILLER) (SMITH) THOMPSON Born: March 8, 1940 Judith A. (Miller) (Smith) Thompson, age 82 passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2022.

She was born on March 8, 1940 in Forreston, IL, the daughter of Ernest and Alma (Bennehoff) Miller. Judi graduated from Forreston High School and then went on to earn an Associate’s Degree. Judi worked at the Shannon Nursing Home and later the Stees Shoppe until she began working for herself cleaning homes. In November of 1995 she married Fred Thompson. Judi was an avid gardener and was always caring for those around her.

She was loved and will be greatly missed by her family.

Judith is survived by her children Shawn (Marylin) Smith, Melanie Hart, and Shane (Wendy Beckwith) Smith, grandchildren Jacob and Denise Smith, Andrew and Jonathan Knapp, and Eden and Sophie Smith, and numerous great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her brother Wayne (Jo) Miller and brother-in-law Bill Stees.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fred, brother Darrell Miller, sisters Nola (Bill) Lomax, Jan Stees, Marilyn (Ralph) Rugland, Linda (Ronald) Gronewold, infant sister Barbie Miller, and daughter-in-law Jodie Smith.

A celebration of Judith’s life will be held this summer in Lanark, IL. The Zentner-Beal Funeral Home of New Glarus is assisting the family.

Survivors include, one sister, Sylvia Selman of Chadwick; two nieces, Deb (Kevin) Miller of Chadwick and Diana (John) Morley of Dixon; great nieces Chelsie Miller of Chadwick, Alyssa and Addie Morley of Dixon; great great-niece Payton Villa of Chadwick.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, John Franks; one brother-in-law, Gene Selman.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, May 26, 2022 at the Lanark Cemetery with Pastor Susan Davenport of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Arrangements were completed by the McDonald Funeral Home in Milledgeville.

For the Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – The Savanna City Council again deadlocked on a vote to replace Mayor Chris Lain.

Four council members voted for Alderman Jeff Griswold and four for Mayor Pro Tem Pat Sanchez at the May 26 meeting.

Sanchez will remain in the position until such time as an acting mayor can be agreed upon.

The council again emphasized that a willing member of the community could be voted into the position.

City Attorney Phil Jensen noted another elected official could potentially serve as mayor, holding two positions at once, depending upon the person.

Alderman Nick Law asked how the most recent city census, which he had heard came in under 3,000, might affect the potential makeup of the council.

Jensen said he and former mayor Lain had discussed this and that he would report back on it, but that he “was concerned about the census being under 3,000.”

MSA project update

MSA’s Steve Herring reported prog-

ress on the projects going on in the city under MSA supervision, with the following highlights: • The Wacker and Oakton Road lift stations: Bidding will commence once property is purchased and a school easement is obtained and the project is prioritized on the IEPA’s Intended Funding Plan.

• 2022 roadway improvements: Bid documents have been prepared for the Pike Street plans and the topographic survey of the First Street Alley will be completed this week.

• Water main replacement and CDBG grant: Discussions continue about which potential projects to submit for this grant, which could yield up to $1.5 million in help for the city.

Water mains have been the focus, with the following areas rated as “good candidates for the funding”: Cooley, Bowen, Gilbert, East Milwaukee, Olive, Towanda, Elm and Bench streets.

• Lead water service inventory and replacement planning: MSA is preparing the lead water service survey and setting up the GIS dashboard for survey tracking. These surveys are scheduled to be sent out in early June. About $108 million is available

for this project in fiscal years 2021 to 2023 or until the funds are exhausted.

They are up to 100 percent forgivable loans,with $4 million in maximum forgiveness annually.

In other action, the council: • Approved pay increases for Public Works employees, four of whom, Eric Hartman, Mark Anderson, Dillon Prowant and Jeff Ashby, received $2 an hour wage increases, while two, Keigan Rice and Ethan Ritchie, received $1 an hour raises, with Ritchie receiving a 50 cents an hour raise now and another 50 cents an hour raise after he completes additional training.

• Approved allocating nonbudgeted funds in the amount of $189,700 to MSA to begin the process toward application for a Water Main Replacement Design and CDBG Grant, and also approved the Project Scope and MSA contract related to this grant application.

• Approved waiving the annual $50 kennel license fee for Heartland Pet Welfare, while also approving a motion from Alderman Jeff Griswold to have a member of the group appear before the council to advise them on how to handle the issue of feral cats

in the city.

Griswold said there is a growing issue with the “stray cat population” on Third Street and also on Fifth Street. He referenced their spay/ neuter/release program, which has been effective in the past.

Jensen said the current ordinance placed an “absolute” obligation on those feeding “feral” cats to spay/ neuter and immunize them.

Police Chief Jeff Doran spoke to the difficulty of enforcing the ordinance, adding that simply seeing cats follow someone to their porch, etc. was not enough to write a ticket, and Alderman Law brought up the issue of the difficulty of pinning down who was feeding ferals.

• Approved a temporary road closure for the Independence Day Parade on July 2 from 6 to 7 p.m., closing Third and Division, Third Street and Main Street.

Picnic canceled

Hotel/Motel Chair Jocelyn Boyd reported that the planned Savanna Pride Picnic sponsored by the Riverview Center has been postponed because of a lack of resources on the part of the Center for that day.

Marketing meeting set for June 15 in Rock Falls I hope everyone is enjoying the second spring we are having! The cooler weather will be missed very soon once it starts hitting the upper 90s in the Midwest.

We have lots going on around the office this week. We are using the cool, rainy weather to stay inside and work on the events we have planned this summer.

We recently sent out an email to our voting members on the upcoming marketing meeting led by Dr. Steve Johnston, but we would like to put an announcement in here as well.

Johnston, who is from Iowa State, will be leading a summer 2022 marketing meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at the Day’s Inn in Rock Falls. The meeting’s focus will be “Managing Farm Risks in Uncertain Times.”

Johnston’s topics will include summer weather forecasts and reviewing crop insurance coverage, pre-harvest marketing strategies and tools, and multiyear impacts for row crops and livestock.

Cardinals win Sterling Supersectional with 6-5 victory May 30 STERLING – After four innings of Monday’s Class 1A Sterling Supersectional, the Forreston softball team found itself in a precarious situation, down 4-0 against a good West Central team.

But the resilient Cardinals never quit, cutting the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the fifth on a Hailey Greenfield tworun single, tying the game at 5-5 on a Brooke Boettner two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, and then walking it off on an Ella Ingram twoout solo home run to win 6-5.

The win propels the Cardinals into the state finals in Peoria on Friday, June 3. Forreston will play Casey Westfield in semifinal action. Casey Westfield advanced to the finals with a 3-1 win over Campbell Hill (Trico) at the Johnson City Supersectional.

Game time is 12:30 p.m. at the Lousiville Slugger field in Peoria.

South Beloit Sectional Forreston 8, Dakota 7: Breanna Kloster’s walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning sent the Forreston softball team into the Class 1A Elite Eight on May 28 as the Cardinals won the South Beloit Sectional final 8-7 over Dakota.

Kloster’s hit scored Hailey Greenfield and Ella Ingram to cap a threerun rally in Forreston’s final at-bat.

Kloster finished with three RBIs, while Brooke Boettner was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Rylee Broshous homered and drove in two runs. Ingram also added an RBI for the Cardinals (21-4).

Kara Erdmann went the distance in the circle, allowing seven runs and six hits with six strikeouts and a walk.

Forreston led 2-0 after the first inning and 4-1 through two innings before Dakota (15-8) scored two runs in the third, one run each in the fourth and fifth, then two more in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead.
