Carroll County to receive ARPA funds for emergency food, shelter programs Carroll County is slated to receive $2,864 in Phase 39 and $8,892 in Phase ARPA-R funds to supplement emergency food and shelter programs.

The money awarded to Carroll County will be used to supplement existing services that provide emergency food and shelter services in Carroll County.

The selection was made by a National Board, which is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and consists of representatives from The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. and United Way Worldwide.

The Local Board, which is chaired by the United Way of Northwest Illinois and is composed of representatives from Carroll County, is charged with distributing funds appropriated

by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas in the communities.

The local board is seeking applications from qualified service organiza-

tions (see detailed list of qualifications below) serving Carroll County.

Those interested in applying can visit United Way of Northwest Illinois’ website or contact that office to receive an application.

The Carroll County Emergency Food and Shelter Local Board previously has distributed emergency food and shelter funds to Northwestern Illinois Community Action Agency Senior Citizen Services, Riverview Center and Great River Outreach.

Areas that are eligible to receive funds include served meals, other food, mass shelter (on-site), other shelter, supplies/equipment and building code repairs/accessibility improvements.

Eligibility requirements for agencies to receive funds: • Nonprofit, faith-based and governmental organizations that provide food, shelter and supportive services within the intent of the program may be eligible based on the terms from the National Board.

• Past EFSP participation is not a requirement.

NEWS BRIEF Kids Summer Fun Fair is June 4 in Lanark City Park

LANARK – The Kids Summer Fun Fair will be Saturday, June 4, in Lanark City Park.

The free event will kick off summer with kid-focused games and activities.

Activities will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include make and take projects, games, bubbles, a scavenger hunt and more.

Businesses, organizations and individuals, such as the Girl Scouts and

local artist Rachel Burkholder, will be on hand to offer information on the kid-centered activities they offer.

Meet Sara Norman, our 2022 summer intern

Carroll County Farm Bureau summer intern Summer is finally here! I am extremely excited to introduce myself, Sara Norman, as the summer intern here at the Carroll County Farm Bureau.

I am a junior at Olivet Nazarene University, located in Bourbonnais. I am studying business administration with a double concentration in management and human resource management, as well as a minor in marketing.

I am part of the swim and dive team at ONU, and I co-lead my university’s chapter of Food Recovery Network, which is a national program fighting hunger in the U.S. I am from Fulton, so my commute to work is just hopping north across the county line. I am extremely excited to work with Chas and learn a bit more about the farm bureau during my time here this summer.

I know we already have a lot of stuff planned this summer, and I am excited to jump right in. If you stop by the office this summer, I would love to meet you!

In just the few days I have been working at the Carroll County Farm Bureau, I already have been introduced to a lot

about what we do here, and I realized quickly that it will be easy for me to be passionate about my internship this summer.

I don’t view this as just fulfilling a graduation requirement or as a summer job, but rather as a way to get me fully immersed in what it means to run a nonprofit organization, as well as work with hundreds of members to satisfy their needs. I love that I get to work for an organization that puts the needs of the community first rather than the profits the company receives.

Learning about what the farm bureau does and how it educates and promotes agriculture is important to me because that is a huge part of my life as well. Living in such a rich area of agriculture, it is important to remember where our food comes from and why we need to educate about it.

The world is always changing, but where our food comes from isn’t, and I fully believe in what the farm bureau does to protect it.

As I mentioned above, we have a lot of activities and events planned this summer that I am extremely excited about.

LANARK – A Lanark man was criticaly injured May 15 after being thrown from his vehicle.

Jared Dickman, 22, was westbound on U.S. Route 52 east of Center Drive about 10:14 p.m. when his car left the road, went into the south ditch and overturned, Illinois State Police said in a news release.

An account at Exchange State Bank has been established to raise money for Dickman.

Donations can be sent to or dropped off at the bank, 126 N. Broad St., Lanark,

IL 61046. Include “Jared Dickman fundraiser” in the check’s memo line.

Dickman, the son of Connan and Tina Dickman, is in critical condition at Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford.

Dickman was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car, Illinois State Police said.

The fundraisers will help pay for gas, food, medical bills and the wages his parents will lose to be with him as he recovers.

APPLE RIVER – On May 7, Terrence Ingram, president of the Eagle Nature Foundation, conducted a Spring Big Bird Day at Apple Creek Prairie, Arboretum and Woods.

He started conducting the annual bird count in 2016 to document the loss of birds to the devastation that agricultural sprays have been causing, as well as the damage to insect and plant life, which is the lifeblood for birds.

Each year, Ingram has been seeing fewer birds, both in numbers and variety, he said.

On Spring Big Bird Day this year, Ingram recorded 43 species. It was three more species than he had documented last year. Of the 43 species, Ingram saw only one bird of 16 of those species and two birds of 10 species.

To help the Eagle Nature Foundation raise money for its efforts to save the bald eagle and other endangered species, Ingram is asking for financial pledges. So far, ENF has received $630 in donations.

Learn all about flora, fauna and fungi of the Mississippi Palisades State Park SAVANNA – The University of Illinois Extension Master Naturalist and stewards of the Mississippi River will explore the flora, fauna and fungi of the Mississippi Palisades State Park from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 28.

The program will start at the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center, 406 Main St., Savanna, where presenters will talk about the flora, fauna and fungi native to the Mississippi Palisades State Park.

The program will end with a walk of the Sentinel trail in the park. The milelong trail through Sentinel Nature Preserve leads upward through a north facing slope that begins with ferns interlaced with early spring blooms, meadow rue, bloodroot, wild ginger, Virginia bluebells and even the occasional yellow lady’s slipper orchid.

The Sentinel trail is classified as moderately challenging and includes a series of slippery wooden steps. Walking the trail is optional. Visitors may choose to only attend the educational program at the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center.

ENF to host summer 50/50 raffle

The Eagle Nature Foundation is

sponsoring a 50/50 raffle with the tickets $5 each. The raffle is open to anyone who wishes to donate to the organization. The winner’s name will be drawn during ENF’s Boat Tour on Aug. 27 on the Mississippi River. The winner does not have to be present to win.

The purse in some past 50/50 raffles has been as high as $1,300.

“This 50/50 raffle is one way that ENF has to raise the vital money needed to study the bald eagle to determine why there are not more immature eagles seen during the winter season,” Ingram said. “During ENF’s 2022 annual midwinter bald eagle count, four dams on the Mississippi River had adult eagles with no immatures at all.

This follows a gradual decline in the number and percentage of immatures that have been recorded by this annual count over the past 10 years.”

Those interested in entering the 50/50 raffle should send checks ($5 a ticket or $50 for 11 tickets) to the Eagle Nature Foundation, 300 E. Hickory St., Apple River, IL 61001, before Aug. 27.

There is no limit to how many tickets may be purchased.

Special surprise for one Eastland grad on Sunday

ehinton@shawmedia.com LANARK – Katlyn Spong experienced the gamut of emotions Sunday when she waited on the stage at Eastland High School to receive her diploma.

“I was shocked and confused as to why no one was giving me my diploma.

Then I saw my brother and I could not stop crying,” Katlyn said.

Katlyn’s brother, Travis, an airman first class stationed in Japan, was hidden away behind the stage through a collaborative effort by Eastland Principal Monica Burkholder and some key members of the Spong family.

When Katlyn’s name was called she walked across the stage and nervously waited as Travis made his appearance in full dress uniform. He handed his sister her diploma and they immediately embraced and Katlyn began crying.

“I was so surprised,” Katlyn said. “I didn’t know what was happening at first. I can’t believe it.”

That pleasant shock was echoed by the siblings’ mom, Kathy. “I had no idea. He’s stationed at Misawa Air Base in Japan, so, yeah, I was surprised, too,” Kathy said.

Travis arrived in Chicago on Friday and drove to Lanark on Saturday – making it two days he had to stay hidden in order for the surprise to work.

“This morning we had a rehearsal and had to be careful no one saw me,” he said smiling.

Katlyn was one of 46 seniors who graduated Sunday during the 45-minute ceremony in the high school gym.

Addison Burkholder was the salutatorian and gave her top 10 list of memories during her 13 years in the

school district.

“I appreciate all the cherished memories we have made together.

Truly the things that really stand out for me are the memories of my friends, classmates, teachers and family. I wish you all nothing but the best in your future endeavors,” she said to her classmates. “Don’t be afraid to live life to the fullest – you have one life, so make it count. Continue to make memories and persevere through all obstacles life throws at you.”

Kellen Henze was the valedictorian.

“I can’t help but feel an overwhelming thankfulness for everything we have all been blessed with,” Henze said. “I am thankful for the community that has always supported us through thick and thin. They say it takes a village to raise a child and we all got very, very lucky with the village we were brought up in.”

He also thanked Eastland staff, parents, family, classmates, friends and mentors who provided him an “amazing support system.”

“Dr. Seuss said it best when he said we ought to be thankful a whole heaping lot for the people and places we’re lucky we’re not. And this could not be more true. We, myself included, often take for granted the littlest things in our life. Like the food on the table, the roof over our heads and the bed we sleep on,” he said. “Other people would kill to have the so-called problems that we face on a daily basis.

“Wherever you end up in the future, or whatever moment you find yourself in, you can always find something to be thankful for because as a wise man once said, ‘It is not happy people who are thankful, it is thankful people who are happy,’” Henze said.

Eastland Junior High track teams fare well at state meet The Eastland Junior High School track teams competed in East Peoria at the IESA State Track Meet last week and came home with four state champions and a second-place team finish from the eighth grade boys.

State champions from the eighth grade boys team were Braden Anderson, Zy Haverland, Parker Krogman, Draven Zier and alternate Cameron Huber in the 4x200 relay (1:40.52), Zier in the long jump (19 feet, 2 inches) and Krogman in the 110 hurdles (16.43 seconds).

Trixie Carroll from the eighth grade girls team was a state champion in the

long jump (16-4.75).

Krogman was third in the 200 (24.77) and tied for seventh with teammate Anderson in high jump (5 feet).

For the eighth grade girls, Shelby Groezinger was second in the long jump (16-.75) and Vanessa Allen was 11th in high jump (4-5).

For the seventh grade boys, the 4x100 relay of Kole Hauptman, Phineas Mullen, Cartsen Wade, Bode Waller and alternate Wyatt Carroll was 15th in 53.86 seconds, Phineas Mullen placed 20th in shot put (33 feet) and Kole Hauptman was 25th in shot put (31-11.5).

CHARLESTON – Sauk Valley athletes won 11 medals in nine events in Saturday’s finals of the IHSA Girls State Track and Field meet at O’Brien Field on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

Sterling junior Alice Sotelo won the state championship in the Class 2A triple jump.

Oregon senior Jenae Bothe took home the state title in the 1A shot put.

Several other locals brought home hardware for finishing in the top nine, while a few others just missed medals.

Fulton’s 4x200 relay team of Abbi Thyne, Annaka Hackett, Mikayla Gazo and Lauren Mahoney finished fifth in Class 1A in a school-record time of 1:45.96, improving on their seed time of 1:47.93 from Thursday’s prelims.

That time just missed the quartet’s own record of 1:43.6, but they were able to surpass it on their final run together; Thyne, Gazo and Mahoney are all seniors.

Forreston-Polo’s Sydni Badertscher tied for fifth in the 1A shot put, as her top prelim throw of 11.37 meters (37 feet, 33/4 inches) carried over and turned out to be her best on the weekend.

Her Cardinals teammate Letrese Buisker tied for sixth in the 1A high jump, which was moved indoors to Lantz Fieldhouse, adjacent to O’Brien Field. The high jump, long jump, triple jump and pole vault were held inside because of inclement weather.

Buisker was one of 12 high jumpers who all cleared 1.55 meters (5 feet, 1 inch) to qualify for the finals. She then hit her first four heights on Saturday with only one miss,

clearing 1.57 meters (5-13/4) before bowing out with three misses at 1.60 meters (5-3).

West Carroll freshman Emma Randecker took sixth in the 1A 200 dash, clocking a 26.48 to beat her prelim time by 0.16 seconds.

Amboy co-op sophomore Elly Jones won a pair of medals, placing seventh in the 1A 100 hurdles and ninth in the 1A triple jump.

She ran the hurdles in 15.80 seconds, improving on her seed time by .07 seconds

Her Clippers teammate and first cousin Lauren Althaus improved on her finals seed by two spots to finish seventh in the 1A 400, clocking a 1:00.66 to break the school record she just set in Thursday’s prelims – she ran a 1:00.83 in that race to break the school record of 1:00.9 she previously shared with her older sister Ashley.

The senior, who will attend St. Ambrose next year but does not plan on running track, was able to soak in the moment during and after her final run on EIU’s blue track.

Erie-Prophetstown’s Riley Packer finished 10th in the 1A 800, just missing out on a medal by one place and 0.33 seconds. Her time of 2:22.14 was a PR and moved her up two spots from her 12th seed after prelims.

She ran a 2:25.93 in that race.

She led for most of the first lap, only to see a large group pass her right as she got back to the line to start her second lap. Still, the senior was pleased with her performance to close out her Panthers career.

Dixon’s 4x800 relay team of Hannah Steinmeyer, Emma Smith, Keeley Mick and Kait Knipple brought home the eighth-place medal with a time of 9:56.91, a new PR.

12 BOYS TRACK SECTIONAL Seven area teams send qualifiers to state from 1A Erie Sectional ERIE – Out of the eight Sauk Valley-area boys track and field teams that competed at the Class 1A Erie Sectional at Wayne Hein Field on May 19, seven will have a representative at the IHSA Boys State Track and Field championships in Charleston this week.

Three Newman relay teams made the cut for this year’s state championships and one took home a sectional title.

The 4x800 relay team of Jacob Donald, Wyatt Widolff, Lucas Simpson and Thomas Powers was the sectional winner, clocking a time of 8:40.96.

Widolff, Donald, Simpson and Owen McBride later qualified in the 4x400, finishing second with a time of 3:35.64.

In the 4x200, Owen McBride, Cody McBride, Ayden Batten and Marcus Williams earned another runner-up finish for the Comets, running a 1:36.42.

Ohio senior Brock Loftus qualified for his third state championship in three eligible seasons, completing the 3,200-meter run in 10:27.52 for a second-place finish for the Amboy-LaMoille-Ohio-AFC co-op.

Fulton will send two qualifiers to Charleston this week after a pair of personal-record outings at sectionals.

Braiden Damhoff took second in the shot put to secure his spot at state, recording a throw of 13.35 meters.

Daken Pessman was the other state qualifier for the Steamers, posting a sectional-title winning triple jump of 12.55 meters.

Erie-Prophetstown, the second-place finisher as a team, qualified for state in six events and secured four individual sectional titles.

Braxton Froeliger was a triple qualifier for the Panthers, picking up a sectional title individually in the long jump with a leap of 6.68 meters. He also garnered a runner-up finish in the 4x100 relay, logging a time of 44.23 with teammates Michael Carlson, Trevor Cobo and Ben Lantz.

The same relay team went on to win a sectional title in the 4x200 later in the evening, recording a time of 1:33.72.

Lantz also was a triple qualifier for E-P, winning a sectional title individually in the 300-meter hurdles with a run of 43.65 seconds, and qualifying in the two aforemen-

tioned relays.

Cobo qualified individually as well, with a runner-up high jump finish of 1.85 meters.

Parker Holdorf was another sectional champion and state qualifier for the Panthers in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 3.70 meters.

Kolton Wilk and Kacen Johnson qualified for state for Milledgeville-Eastland. Wilk leapt 6.25 meters in the long jump for a runner-up finish, while Johnson finished fourth in the 110 hurdles, but his time of 15.52 seconds easily beat the state-qualifying mark of 16.00.

Brady Wolf, Justice Brainerd, Thomas Dauphin and Alex Anderson won a pair of sectional titles for Morrison in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, blazing to times of 44.11 seconds and 3:33.82, respectively.

Riverdale placed first as a team with 97 points.

E-P was the runner-up with 81 points.

Newman took sixth (43 points) in the 16-team meet, Morrison was seventh (32), and Fulton and Milledgeville-Eastland tied for eighth (31).

The Amboy co-op came in at 10th (27), and Bureau Valley finished 13th (11).

Hartman allowed just three earned runs and five hits in 5-plus innings, striking out seven and walking four.

1A Durand Regional final Forreston 2, Durand 0: The Cardinals claimed the regional championship, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie.

Rylee Broshous and Brooke Boettner had RBIs, and Kara Erdmann and Adriana Miller each had a hit for Forreston (19-4). Erdmann pitched a three-hitter, striking out six and walking three.

The Cardinals will take on Pearl City in the South Beloit Sectional semifinal at 4:30 p.m.

Baseball - 1A Amboy Regional final Fulton 13, Eastland 5: The Steamers

scored three runs in each of the first two innings, then added three more runs in the fourth and four in the sixth to secure a 1A regional championship.

Jacob Jones had two doubles and a home run, driving in three runs and scoring twice to lead Fulton. Davis Ludin was 3 for 4 with a double, four RBIs and a run, and Ian Wiebenga had a pair of singles, two RBIs and three runs. Ryan Eads drove in a pair of runs, Brock Mason and Kannon Wynkoop each had two singles and scored twice, and Drew Dykstra drove in a run and scored another.

Dykstra got the win, pitching six innings and allowing five runs (two earned), six hits and three walks with 13 strikeouts. Jones struck out two and walked one in an inning of hitless, scoreless relief.

The Cougars scored two runs in the top of the first, and added three in the fifth. Hunter Miller had two RBIs, Cole Huber had two singles an RBI and a run, and Kellen Henze doubled, drove in a run and scored twice.

Owen Rogers and Carson Heckman also scored for Eastland.

Rogers allowed nine runs (six earned) and 11 hits in four innings, with five strikeouts and a walk. Allyn Geerts gave up four runs (two earned) and three hits in two innings of relief, striking out two and walking one.

The Steamers will play the winner of Saturday’s East Dubuque Regional final between Warren-Stockton and East Dubuque at the 1A Lena-Winslow Sectional at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Softball 1A Dakota Regional final Dakota 7, Polo 3: The Marcos’ season came to an end with a loss to the host Indians in the regional title game.

1A Lena-Winslow Regional final Orangeville 7, Eastland 4: The Cougars came up short against the top-seeded Broncos in the regional championship game in Lena.

1A Pearl City Regional final Pearl City 10, Fulton 0, 6 inn.: The Steamers fell behind 4-0 in the first inning and never recovered in a loss to the host Wolves.

What’s happening at CCSSO & CCT Hello Everyone, The old saying, “Time waits for no one” is so very, very true. Here we are already in June. As I am writing this I am hoping the weather straightens out for us.

We have been receiving many phone calls regarding the ads people are seeing on TV about Advantage Plans, also known as Plan C, you know the ones with Joe Namath and JJ Walker, and making it sound like if you sign up with them you will not have to pay your Part B Premium. That is NOT true at all.

In order to qualify for your Part B Premium to be paid you need to meet the income and asset guidelines. The guideline for one person income would be $1,358 a month or less and for two it would need to be $2,059 a month or less.

If you think you may qualify then please give us a call. It is my recommendation to not call the numbers on TV as you could do yourself more harm than

TRANSPORTATION CCT now has four buses and 10 vans, all wheelchair accessible, available to take people to meals, medical appointments and to do shopping and other errands in towns and around the county or to Freeport, Sterling or Clinton.

We have now added medical appointment to Monroe, Rockford and Iowa City with a three-day notice.

Trouble hearing on the phone?

Illinois Telecommunication Access Corporation (ITAC) has added a program to help those with cellular service that are having trouble hearing on the phone.

The program provides free amplified telephones and captioning telephone to Illinois residents who are hard of hearing. Applicants must be certified as hard of hearing by a doctor, nurse practitioner, or audiologist; live in Illinois; and have a service that remits to the program.

Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) and Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) are selection centers for

ITAC. Walk-ins are welcomed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday at the WCSC. Potential applicants can call the WCSC 815-622-9230, ext. 194, or LCCOA 815288-9236 in advance to set up an appointment to see about qualifying.

Cellphones must be Bluetooth capable.

Applicants applying for this program, should bring in the cellphone. Please bring a phone bill with all the pages for landline service or cellular service (prepaid cell uses that don’t receive a phone bill must bring the cellphone) and proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with the applicant’s name and address on it).

SERVICES Exercise Equipment

The Senior Center has six pieces of professional-grade equipment, treadmill, rowing machine, Stair Stepper, E-Force Cross Trainer exerciser and recumbent bicycle.

You are welcome to use any of these anytime the Senior Center is open, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

These six pieces of exercise equipment have been

donated to help seniors get some needed movement and cardio work that can improve both their physical and mental states.

And as anyone can tell you, a few minutes walking or riding a bike can go a long way.

Remember in our new building we have no steps so the equipment is so much easier to get to.

So bring a few friends and all of you can work out together, and the best part is it is FREE!!!!

We ask that COVID-19 protocols be observed and after using the equipment that you sanitize with the wipes provided for everyone’s safety.

What do you do with your old cellphones?

Carroll County Senior Center has a donation box for old and broken cellphones.

We recycle them by sending them into a company that refurbishes them for emergency 911 phones for areas devastated by disasters and for sale to low-income people. We currently have a box at the Senior Center.

If you know of anyone looking to get rid of old cellphones, have them drop them off at the Carroll County Senior Center during our regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day June 15 Help spread the word for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15. It can be hard to imagine that anyone would deliberately want to harm an elderly person, but unfortunately, elder abuse is a widespread problem.

Some instances of elder abuse are intended to exploit the person financially; you’ve probably heard of scams targeting seniors. In other cases, it’s simple negligence: Caregivers don’t provide the basic necessities, such as nutritious food, appropriate medication, safety or assistance with hygiene. If you see something, say something.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, or WEAAD, is an annual initiative launched on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization.

In its 66/127 resolution, the United Nations General Assembly designated that date as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day in which the entire world voices its opposition to any form of abuse of the older generation.

WEAAD aims to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of the abuse older people suffer by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting them.

Elder abuse is one of the least investigated types of violence and does not get addressed in national action plans as frequently as other key social issues.

The UN International Plan of Action described elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue. Globally we have an aging population, with the number of older people in the world expected to be 1.4

billion by 2030.

Research suggests that 4 percent to 6 percent of the elderly suffer from some kind of abuse, most of which goes unreported. This day is to make sure we remain focused on our elders, ensuring they lead a life of high quality and dignity.

Know the Symptoms of Abuse Bedsores, bruises or chafing could indicate that your loved one is being restrained to a bed or wheelchair, or otherwise physically abused. If he or she has recently lost weight, malnutrition or dehydration could be at play, while poor hygiene is also an indicator of possible abuse.

Watch, too, for changes in the person’s mood; if they seem depressed, anxious, agitated, or listless, see if you can discover why. In short, any changes to an elder’s behavior, disposition or physical condition could be cause for concern.

If You Suspect Something, Say Something If you do detect signs of abuse, document them. Take pictures of bruises or injuries, get a statement from the victim or any witnesses, and keep a log of any suspicious behavior or circumstances. You can then address your concerns with the manager or director of the long-term care facility or home care provider; if they do not take action, contact the police or an elder abuse attorney.

Spread the Word with Social Media It might seem counterintuitive to help prevent the abuse of elders using tools that are largely considered the domain of younger generations, but there’s really no better way to get the word out and foster awareness than through social platforms. Share informational articles on Facebook and use the hashtag #WEAAD on Twitter.

Do you qualify for a discount on your Illinois license plates?

Here are the income guidelines for the license plate discount. If you qualify, you can apply for the Benefits Access Program, (Formerly Circuit Breaker) and receive a discount on your license plate sticker.

The new income guidelines for the license plate discount (gross income) are: • 1-person household, $33,562; • 2-person household, $44,533; • 3-person household $55,500.

The age requirement is 65 or disabled. Applicants need to bring in 2021 income to file (1040 &1099s). Call 815244-1800 if you have any question.

Hospice Services

We now have Hospice brochures at the Senior Center for anyone that may be needing this service. They are a wonderful service to help prepare family and friends for the loss of a loved one, and also provides additional support often needed after the loss occurs.

Their emphasis is to assist families who desire to care for their loved one during the final phases of life. They care for the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of their patients and their families as they deal with this period of illness and bereavement.

Be on the lookout for scams

Over the past six months, we have been seeing an increase in “new” Medicare card scams. In 2018, everyone received a new Medicare card in the mail. Scammers are now trying to use this old scam with a new twist.

How the scam works is that the fraudsters will call a beneficiary and ask them if they have received their “new” card in the mail. They tell them that the new card is either gold, plastic or has a chip in it.

They will then ask the beneficiary to confirm all their personal information and then the consumer never receives that new “card.” Please remember that Medicare will NEVER call you.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of a potential Medicare card scam, please call the Illinois SMP Hotline at (800) 699-9043.

Turning 65 can be very confusing with all the information you receive in the mail about which Medicare D Plan to take or which supplemental to get. If you are

about to turn 65 and have questions regarding what to do, stop by and see our SHIP Counselors, Karen Holm, Sandra Aude, and Deb Connor, and we can help you sort through the confusion and answer some questions you may have. Also remember to stop at the Courthouse to do your Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption Application and Affidavit. The Senior Center is open 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

When you turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare, the best time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). Your IEP includes the three months before, the month of, and the three months following your 65th birthday. If you enroll in Medicare during this time, you will avoid late enrollment penalties. Underage substance use is associated with various negative consequences for youth, and can affect and endanger the lives of those around them (SAMHSA).
