DEKALB – WNIJ (89.5 FM) is increasing coverage of agriculture, water and environmental issues with its new Mississippi River Basin Ag and Water Desk.

Starting this summer, the project is part of a collaborative network of 10 stations, with support from Report for America, the University of Missouri School of Journalism and the Society of Environmental Journalists. The stations will provide in-depth stories about one of the world’s major river systems.

WNIJ’s expanded coverage of the environment has a sharp focus on water including the quality of rivers and groundwater and how climate-driven rain and flooding are fundamentally changing the course of life in the region.

“Nutrient pollution in the state’s precious waterways only continues to increase. Residents are demanding to know more about what is in their drinking water after high-profile chemical spills near the Rock and Mississippi Rivers,” WNIJ News Director Jenna Dooley said.

For the Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – The Savanna City Council’s vote for a new mayor to replace Chris Lain, who recently resigned, was inconclusive May 10.

Alderman Jeff Griswold presented himself to the council as a potential replacement, listing his past work, educational and community service history. He cited his experience with many capital expenditure projects as a manufacturing engineer, including one for $2 million.

“That was the icing on my cake as far as my career in Hanover,” he said.

He also noted he had served on the council longer than anyone present.

Alderman Deb Long then asked Pro Tem and presiding mayor Pat Sanchez if he would consider serving, and he said he would. He cited his experience working with all the department heads, and said he “knows everything that’s going on with the city” including terms as Finance and Public Works/ Refuse/Streets and Alleys Committee Chair.

“I know I can do the job,” he said.

The council voted, with the results ending in a tie. Griswold, Aldermen Nick Law, Tevan Hartman and Jim Friedenbach all voted for Griswold, while Long, Sanchez, Peter King and Jocelyn Boyd all voted for Sanchez.

Law and Hartman both said they had been approached by citizens who requested that they vote for Griswold.

Griswold said he felt there could be a conflict of interest for Sanchez, as his daughter works for the city, but City Attorney Phil Jensen said there was none since a conflict of interest required an interest in a contract. Jensen did allow that there might be times that such a person might have to abstain from voting, per council’s wishes.

The council voted Boyd in as Mayor Pro Tem in order to assure that there were three people to cosign city checks and keep operations flowing, and so there’s no potential vacancy. The council voted Boyd in on a 6 to 1 vote, with only Griswold voting “nay.”

LANARK – Thirty-one Eastland seniors were honored at the 22nd annual Senior Awards and Scholarship Night.

As times change, we have to change, too It had been two years since I was in person at the IFB Manager’s Conference. I have to say it felt like a cloud was over it this year.

Normally, I would come back full of ideas, and this year, I didn’t. I don’t know if I was missing something or if it had to deal with all the rain. There was even one day of nice weather back here while I was gone, but Bloomington had rain.

I enjoyed getting to talk to my fellow managers, which I feel was where I get my best ideas. While we are a very diverse state, I seem to learn a lot from what they are doing for programming, their struggles and their ideas.

As times have changed, we have all learned that we have to change as well. Our membership has changed, the way members and people in general interact has changed, and the needs have changed. How do we adapt and how do we stay relevant is a big question we are all asking.

What a change a week made weather wise! It is nice to look out my window and see farm machinery going by and to see green grass.

Parade, and Friedenbach said “so it’s a special group.” Law asked if someone from the Center could appear before the council to explain the event to them a bit more thoroughly.

“My feeling is that the city should be neutral on those things, whether it be LGBTQ or whatever might be on the other side, I just kind of feel we should be neutral.”

Boyd said they wanted to do a picnic lunch in Val’s Garden, which is city property. There would be music, the community would be welcome and the money would go for advertising.

Sanchez said the group had obtained a permit for the event.

Friedenbach, Griswold, Law and Hartman voted against the motion, with Boyd, King and Long voting aye.

After Law’s motion to table until the next meeting, Sanchez said he would contact the center to have someone come to the next council meeting.

In other action, the council: • Approved requests for funds from the fire department, including up to $112,000 for new tanker truck equipment, up to $7,700 for portable radios, and up to $3,900 for a thermal imaging camera system.

• Approved the appointment of Jensen as the city’s attorney for another term.

Jensen explained that in this event, under law, the Pro Tem Mayor would remain as acting mayor, until such time, if ever, that the council were able to agree on a candidate to fill the slot.

The seat will be up for grabs at the next election in April 2023, so whoever is in the chair will only be there for the next 11 months unless they run for election and are voted in by the public.

Jensen said even a non-seated member of the community potentially could be voted in to assume the slot, adding that Sanchez also will retain his slot as Alderman. “There is not an empty seat,” he said.

Lain moved out of state and resigned as mayor earlier his month.

In other action, the council strongly debated the recommendation from the Hotel/Motel Committee to donate $1,000 to the Riverview Center for the Savanna Pride Picnic.

Friedenbach questioned if the event might not be “kind of political” and committee chair Boyd said it wasn’t and June was the month when LGBTQ groups do celebrations and that the City of Chicago sponsors a Gay Pride Parade.

Economic Growth Corporation (GROWTH) will be kicking off Shimer Square’s first redevelopment phase at Mayfest at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 28.

Brian Hollenback, president/CEO of GROWTH, along with Mount Carroll Mayor Carl Bates will update the community on the redevelopment and mark the official kickoff for construction to officially begin in the fall.

“This celebration acknowledges a culmination of many individuals’ tireless efforts over the last three years.

Shimer Square’s development offers a fitting example of what a true community-based developer can do with local support,” Hollenback said in a news release. “This first phase of Shimer Square’s redevelopment will reenergize the heart of this beloved campus.

We appreciate the community’s continued support and are truly privileged to bring this historic campus back to life – one phase at a time.”

Bates is looking forward to the project.

“Today we commemorate the next

great step in reconnecting Shimer Square to the heart of our community,” Bates said. “Our beloved campus will now see investment and opportunities that will bring in new residents and businesses into our community. I have fully supported GROWTH and their efforts on this campus and am extremely excited to see the redevelopment plan being realized.”

Shimer Square encapsulates the entire campus footprint of the former historic Shimer College, a 14-acre campus with 17 buildings, former residential halls and instructional buildings solidly constructed between 1903 and 1975.

Shimer Square’s development budget is more than $60 million over a series of phases. Developers said the project will “transform the campus into several diverse uses including housing, entertainment, dining, fitness, business incubation and artist and community space ... all rolled up into one sustainable, diverse, inclusive, equitable historical community asset built for the future.”

The redevelopment, which will start this year, will create 88 units of housing and redevelop five of the 17 buildings. Future phases are expected

to provide additional housing and commercial/retail space for lease.

“Once GROWTH took title to the property in December 2018, our first commitment was to bring Mayfest back to the campus. It only makes sense that three years later, after one intervening pandemic, we come back to Mayfest to update the community on our good news and to assure the same community that GROWTH is working hard behind the scenes to advance the shared plans that are starting to be realized for this historic campus,” the release said.

Before embarking on the effort, GROWTH reviewed all local, regional and state plans and conferred with their authors to ensure Shimer Square’s alignment with relevant development initiatives, according to the release.

“As a community-based development organization, GROWTH is known nationally for how to get the ‘hard deals done,’” the release said.

“GROWTH first identifies its redevelopment strategy and then seeks the capital necessary to close on financing to start construction. Many times, this takes three or more years to accomplish and consists of multiple, complex layers of financing.

Locals punch tickets to state meet at track sectional

For Shaw Local News Network WINNEBAGO – Midway through the Class 1A Winnebago Sectional on Friday night, inclement weather put a pause on things. But Forreston-Polo, Oregon and West Carroll already had plenty of competitors qualify for the state meet.

And a West Carroll runner didn’t mind the “Thunder” as she sprinted her way to the state meet in the 100 meters just moments before the meet was halted and moved to Saturday.

Freshman Emma Randecker of West Carroll won with a time of 12.73 seconds. Immediately after that race, meet officials called for a weather delay.

“We think she has a good chance to make the finals downstate,” West Carroll coach Teo Clark said. “She already has the school records in the 100 and 200.”

The Thunder had two other qualifiers in the jumps. Taking second in the long jump was Kylie Hill at 4.67 meters, and taking second in the triple jump was Olivia Shelly at 9.88 meters.

Hill was fourth in the triple jump at

9.49 meters, but did not qualify in that event.

On Saturday, Randecker added a win in the 200 (26.18 seconds) to sweep the sprints As she’s done all year, it was senior Jenae Bothe leading the way for Oregon with a third straight trip to Charleston in both the shot put and discus. They weren’t her best marks (12.65 meters in the shot, 35.65 in the discus), but the real test comes next week.

“I’m focused on tuning up on both pads,” Bothe said. “I’ll put more emphasis on the shot, where I peaked [44-feet, 11 inches] earlier. I wasn’t happy with my discus today [third place], but the No. 1 goal is to qualify.”

Bothe goes into the state meet with the No. 1 effort in the shot put and an outside chance at also taking aim at a state title in the discus.

“I feel a lot of pressure,” Bothe said.

“The biggest thing is performing regardless of them.”

Joining her downstate will be a pair of first-timers in hurdler Sophie Stender and pole vaulter Sonya Plescia. Stender finished third in the hurdles, but qualified on time with a finish

After Buisker broke a long drought at Forreston by qualifying last year, it was even more excitement for the co-op with Polo.

“This is unbelievable,” longtime coach Terry Jenkins said. “With COVID, last year’s shortened season and the bad weather this year, I’m just happy to have a season and see the girls shine tonight.”

In the hurdles, Buisker led three other girls to state qualifications with a time of 16.16 seconds. It bested her PR of 17.25.

“A lot of energy out here,” Buisker said. “It’s all positive. A blessing and beautiful.”

She also took second in the 300 hurdles (47.48 seconds).

In the high jump, Buisker and Renee Rittmeyer tied at 5 feet, but Rittmeyer, one of the stars on Winnebago’s state runner-up basketball team, won on fewer misses.

Close behind at 4-10 were Ennis Ferris of Forreston and Jennica Ciesiel of Oregon.

It was a family affair for Badertscher in claiming her state berths.
