Sportsmen licensing to be easier for veterans, active-duty members SPRINGFIELD – Legislation from state Rep. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, soon will make acquiring licenses to fish, hunt and camp in Illinois easier for veterans and active-duty members of the military.

HB4680 amended the DNR Civil Administrative Code, Fish and Aquatic Life Code and the Wildlife Code so that members and former members of the military no longer have to apply for these licenses in person.

McCombie was pleased with the passing of this legislation.

“Those who defend our country deserve to be treated with respect and honor,” McCombie said. “It is important when our military members are home with their families (that) they enjoy the time Tony McCombie they have together without the inconvenience of Illinois bureaucracy. Whether hunting, fishing

or camping, our servicemen and women and our veterans deserve to enjoy the beautiful nature that Illinois offers without the hassle of being forced to apply in person. The unnecessary burden of requiring Illinoisans to drive to Springfield yearly to receive a fee exemption is outrageous. I would like to thank my constituent who came to our office and presented this idea.”

The legislation removes the requirement for active-duty service members or veterans to present in person the required documents for fee exemption.

“This bill was presented to me by a veteran that could not get the exemption due to the government offices being shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. Upon further review and collaboration with the Department of Natural Resources, we decided that veterans and active-duty military should be able to present the necessary paperwork in local offices. The Department of Natural Resources will be able to develop rules to assist veterans and active-duty military in response to this bill,” McCombie said.

Seven area high school teams participating in clay target league The new season is underway for seven area high school teams participating in the Illinois State High School Clay Target League this spring.

1,311 athletes compete on 65 high school teams from across the state that participate in the program, which is part of the USA Clay Target League.

The seven area schools with teams are Eastland High School, Faith Christian School, Foreston Jr./Sr. High School, Milledgeville High School, Morrison Community High School, Polo Community High School and Prophetstown High School.

“We are excited to see a record number of high school teams participating this season.” said John Nelson, presi-

dent of the USACTL. “There is such a high demand for outdoor activities that are an alternative to traditional sports.

Kudos to the coaches and parents that make these teams possible.”

The nine-week season began in late March with the first of two practice weeks. Weekly competition begins April 17, with a final ‘fun week’ in mid-May. The season culminates with tournaments in June. Athletes with top season averages will be invited to register for the League’s National Championship held in Michigan every July. This spring, more than 31,500 student-athletes are participating in League programs across the country.

New exhibit coming to Savanna Museum & Cultural Center The next exhibit and community event at the Savanna Museum & Cultural Center is “Creativity on the Move: a Showcase of Art, Craft, Talent and Skills” on Friday and Saturday, April 22-23.

All are welcome to participate and set up a display of their creations, whether it be photography, oil, watercolor or mixed media paintings, wood carvings, metal works, embroidery,

stitchery and quilted items, hand-crafted jewelry … anything, as long as it’s original.

This will be a family-friendly exhibit open to the public from 6 to 8 p.m. Fri-

day and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

His SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) is Agriculture Sales Placement. He is employed and works at the Ace Hardware in Savanna.

Through his SAE experiences at Ace Hardware, Falk has learned numerous business skills, logged more than 2,000 hours and earned a little more than $20,000.

Pearl City fourth graders work on STEM projects Pearl City’s fourth grade classes have been working on STEM projects using specific criteria in a timed setting.

The projects sustained the “testing” and performed as planned. After studying the engineering design process, Alison Brouhard’s class put it to the test to construct a model survival hut for a man stranded on a desert island.

“Their hut had to be at least 5 inches tall, be attached to a base no more than 36 square inches, have a working door and survive a windstorm without falling apart,” Pearl City Superintendent Brent Chrisman said.

“The constraints were that they could only use the materials provided and they only had 45 minutes. There were some very creative designs and all five huts survived the windstorm.”

Season’s eatings! While it doesn’t feel like spring outside, soon it will be time to enjoy all those favorite spring and summer fruits and veggies.

Did you know Illinois farmers grow at least 64 vegetables and 15 types of fruit in addition to the typical corn and soybeans we raise?

It won’t be long before farmers markets will be opening up. What is in season? Well, for the month of April it is typical for asparagus, lettuce, onions, peas and spinach to be ready.

I am not too picky when it comes to food, but peas are one food I will not eat. Asparagus is one food I just learned to eat about four years ago and I just bought some!

I have been asked about peaches. It is great to see everyone excited for them to come. I have not heard anything yet. Generally, we get word around mid to late May depending on how spring progresses. Once we know something I surely will be sharing that information.

West Carroll FFA teams do well at District 1 competition The West Carroll FFA Parliamentary Procedure Teams (Varsity and Conduct of Chapter Meetings teams) participated at the District I FFA Parliamentary Procedure CDE on April 6 at Blackhawk East College in Kewanee.

The Varsity Parliamentary Team placed seventh with a score of 611.5.

Individually, Victoria Reiland placed sixth as a floor member with 123 points and Max Eaton was seventh as a chairman with 102.5 points.

Other team members included Haylee McGinnis, Lacey Eissens, Zion Long and Tori Moshure.

The West Carroll FFA Greenhand or Conduct of Chapter Meetings Team placed fifth with a score of 648 points.

Individually, Allison Duggan was the top floor member with a score of 76.

Dalton Duggan placed fifth as chairman with a score of 61.

Other team members included Noah Rannow, Caitlyn Stingley, Aubrey Wurster, Kyaria Kerkove and Ashlyn Foster.

Both teams won the Section I FFA Parliamentary Procedure CDE at River Ridge High School on March 8.

A Parliamentary Procedure CDE consists of members taking a 25-question multiple choice test over parliamentary procedure, making a demonstration using parliamentary motions and answering two questions over their assigned motion.

Youth from Carroll, Lee and Whiteside counties met March 19 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dixon to participate in the CLW 4-H Public Speaking Contest.

Participants came prepared with a formal or illustrated speech, original work or an oral interpretation of a published work. Topics ranged from Angus cattle and ducks to an excerpt from William Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet” and even a speech and PowerPoint presentation on the historical locations of the U.S. Capitol.

Linnea Thorngren of Carroll County was awarded a Blue Ribbon, State Fair Delegate and Top Junior Presentation award for her speech on

Angus cattle.

Kate Viall, Haleigh Wilcox and Maddix Swanson of Lee County received Blue Ribbons and State Fair Delegate awards.

From Whiteside County, Katelyn Temple, Paige Dykstra and Madison Krum were awarded Blue Ribbons and State Fair Delegate. Dykstra also received the top Sr. Presentation Award. Rachel Anton received a Blue Ribbon and the honor of State Fair Alternate.

State Fair Delegates have the opportunity to bring their speeches to the 2022 Illinois 4-H State Public Speaking Contest in Champaign on April 30.

MOUNT CARROLL – Timber Lake Playhouse will open its 61st concert season at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 7, with the Rock River Jazz Band, a 16-piece band composed of professional musicians from northern Illinois.

The Rock River Jazz Band plays big band music, swing, 1950s to ‘60s rock, pop, waltzes, polkas, mambos and a little bit of country.

Timber Lake Playhouse is at 8215 Black Oak Road in Mount Carroll.

On Saturday, May 14, at 7 p.m., Felix and Fingers will return to the playhouse. The dueling pianos show is an all-request show performing songs from Frank Sinatra to Lady Gaga and Michael Bublé to Justin Bieber. No two Felix and Fingers shows are the same.

On Thursday, May 19, at 2 p.m., a rock ‘n’ roll tribute from Elvis to The Beatles featuring The Neverly Brothers returns to TLP. Audience members will be led on a guided tour of rock history complete with vintage wardrobe, stories and a multimedia show for this Magical History Tour.

Blues In the Woods featuring three Midwest blues performers will be Saturday, May 21. Kevin Burt, the 2019 Blues Music Award nominee and triple

International Blues Challenge winner; Birdog Blues Band, a Madison-area group with multiple award-winning musicians; and The Russ Green Band are featured. Concerts begin at 3 p.m. and continue throughout the day.

Concerts continue in the fall with Hair Band Night on Aug. 27; The Six One Five Collective on Sept. 3; Midnight Rider, an Allman Brothers tribute, on Sept. 24; Detroit Rock City, a KISS tribute show, on Oct. 22; The Blooze Brothers on Nov. 5; Boy Band Night on Nov. 12; and Britbeat, a Beatles tribute, on Nov. 19.

As part of this season’s concert series, TLP has scheduled two Movie Nights. On Oct. 15, the Disney movie “Hocus Pocus” will be shown at 7 p.m. in the playhouse. On Oct. 29, TLP will be showing “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” complete with costumed actors.
