Matthews, (Don Geiger) Matthews of Coleta, Bobbie (Jerry) Gibbs of Milledgeville, Bette (Dalage 83, of Milledbert) Wiebenga of Morrison and Be Miller of geville, died Monday, Milledgeville; two sons, Jon (Mary) Matthews March 28, 2022 at of Lanark and JC (Kim) Matthews of MilledGenesis Hospital in geville; eight grandchildren, Steven (Sarah) Davenport, IA. James was born May Wiebenga, Kevin Wiebenga, Andrew Gibbs, Eric (Logan) Gibbs, Damon Miller, Rylee Mat17, 1938 in Montfort, thews, Jeff (Alissa) Althoff and Katie (Rick) WI, the son of Clinton and Nancy (Giltner) Matthews. He was a 1956 graduate of Mont- Warner; and eight great grandchildren, Caden, Madelynn, and Nolan Wiebenga, Taylor fort High School and later married Nancy Hooper, Maddy and Austin Warner, and Henry Reger on September 25, 1959 in Nashua, IA. and Jared Althoff.

She preceded him in death on August 10, He was preceded in death by his wife; par2017. James was employed at Northwestern ents; sisters, Mary Ann, Patsy and Nancy; and Steel and Wire for 28 years retiring in 1993.

He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing brothers, Keith, Bill, George and Chuck.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later for catfish with his wife, Nancy, on the Mississippi and Rock Rivers. He was the inventor date.

FREEPORT – Back Country Roads, a northern Illinois Top 40/classic country band, will perform a stage show in the ballroom of the Masonic Event Center on Saturday, April 9.

In addition to being a fun-filled night of great music and entertainment, the event serves as a fundraiser for downtown Freeport beautification efforts. The event is hosted by the Greater Freeport Partnership along with generous support from local sponsors.

Back Country Roads is heralded as one of the best cover bands in the area, opening shows for Country Thunder, the Wisconsin State Fair and many top country artists.

“So many people have missed having live music events at the Masonic Event Center and we had a great show of support for our fundraising event last November. We invite everyone back for a fabulous local band on April 9 and hope to have the same positive response,” said Cal Wescott, promotions committee member for the Partnership.

PEARL CITY – Students in the Pearl City school district have been busy with projects for the third quarter.

Art students had their work displayed Feb. 25 at the Aspiring Artist Show at the Freeport Art Museum. Pearl City entered 43 pieces of art from kindergarten through high school.

Joshua Wool received second place in the elementary category.

Fourth grade students visited kindergarten classes to help students understand CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words for their lessons.

Janet Rauch’s sixth grade class has been creating presentations using a program called Flip-grid and a set of criteria. Their projects turned out amazing, and using this new program provides students with another tool to display, defend and present their knowledge.

Pearl City school district students busy with projects

This process helps prevent injuries, property damage and inconvenient utility outages.

April seems to be all about safety in general.

April 4-8 is Stand up for Grain Safety Week. In 2020, 35 grain entrapment incidents were reported representing a 7.9% decrease from the 38 recorded in 2019. 57% of those incidents were fatal.

Many more incidents remain unreported each year.

80% of all grain entrapment cases occurred in the Midwest or Corn Belt (Source: Purdue University).

Three cases involving females were documented in 2020, two of which involved falls from storage structures.

cost of which is $434,553. The council previously approved releasing $200,000 in funds as a downpayment for this item.

• Tabled several agenda items dealing with public works projects until the next meeting.

Illinois EPA announces spring household hazardous waste collection events Illinois EPA Director John Kim announced nine Household Hazardous Waste one-day collection locations this spring. One of the events will be in Mount Carroll on June 11.

Each year, Illinois EPA provides residents with free HHW collection events to safely dispose of unused or leftover hazardous products commonly found in homes. Illinois EPA HHW collections continue to be contactless for the safety of participants and workers. Collection events are funded through the Illinois EPA’s Solid Waste Fund.

“We see a continued need for Household Hazardous Waste collection events throughout the state. We are pleased to continue offering this important program, providing residents with opportunities to safely dispose of unwanted chemicals and potentially hazardous products,” Kim said. “We are grateful to our local partners and co-sponsors who make

these events possible throughout Illinois.”

One-day collections are open to all Illinois residents and operate from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the day of the event.

Registration is required for all of the spring collection events.

The Mount Carroll event is Saturday, June 11, at the Highway Garage Building, 10735 Mill Road. Call Mark Maidak at 815-718-0238 for information. A link to register has yet to be announced.

Residents participating in these events are encouraged to bring chemical cleaners, oil-based paints, thinners, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene, weed killers, insecticides, pesticides, old or outdated medication and similar hazardous household products. Fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps also may be brought to the collection sites.

Items not accepted include latex paint, explosives, propane tanks, fire

extinguishers, smoke detectors, agricultural chemicals and business waste.

For safe transport of HHW, residents are asked to: • Pack HHW items in a disposable box to avoid spilling during transport.

• Keep like chemicals together and separate unlike chemicals.

• Secure lids and make sure containers are not leaking.

• Place boxes of HHW in the empty trunk of your vehicle and away from passengers during transport.

• Remain in the vehicle at collection site. On-site personnel will remove the HHW from your vehicle.

Trial set for man accused of killing woman in collision

A Milledgeville man accused of driving with a blood alcohol content level nearly three times the legal limit when he crashed into a car, resulting in the death of the driver three days later, will be tried by a jury Sept. 20, four years after the collision.

Douglas M. Strehlow, who turned 48 on March 30, the day the trial date was set, was southbound on state Route 40 just north of Fulfs Road about 2:40 a.m. Aug. 19, 2018, when his pickup crossed the center line

and collided nearly head-on with a northbound passenger car driven by Summer D. Harmon, 40, of Sterling, who was delivering newspapers for Sauk Valley Media.

Harmon, a 1995 Rock Falls High School graduate who worked as a motor route carrier for SVM for more than 20 years, died Aug. 22, 2018, in a Wisconsin hospital of blunt force trauma.

Strehlow was arrested June 2, 2019, and charged with two counts of aggravated DUI involving a death, punishable by 3 to 7 years in prison.

After a two-year hiatus, the West Carroll FFA Chapter held its 15th annual Parent-Member Banquet on March 14.

Chapter President Max Eaton opened with a greeting to about 100 members and guests. FFA Adviser Don Mathey gave the invocation. The meal was catered by the Candlelight Inn. Team and individual awards were given at the banquet.

West Carroll FFA CDE teams received first in Section 1 FFA competition and included the Varsity and Greenhand Parliamentary Procedure teams.

Seven FFA Greenhands were initiated into the West Carroll FFA chapter. Ashlyn Foster was awarded the Star FFA Greenhand of 2021. Greenhand member Dalton Duggan recited the FFA Creed.

Chapter FFA Degrees were presented to 12 members.

Lacey Eissens recognized Section 1 FFA Proficiency Award winners Tom Falk and Taylor Schmoll.

Mathey recognized the three prospective State FFA degree recipients – Nathan Veith, Faith Hovoius and Erika Rice.

John Kustes awarded the $1,000 Tom Kustes FFA Memorial Scholarship to Rice.

Hovious was presented the Blue and Gold Member Award.

Mathey presented the chapter’s Honorary FFA Degree to Krum Farms for its contributions to the chapter’s successes through the FFA plot.

The 2022-23 West Carroll FFA officer team was installed: President, Max Eaton; Vice President, Victoria Reiland; Secretary, Tori Moshure; Reporter, Haley McGinnis; Treasurer, Emily Harridge; Sentinel, Lacey Eissens.

The West Carroll FFA thanked individuals and businesses that donated to the Illinois FFA Foundation Drive, volunteer judges and the people who helped in planting and harvesting the West Carroll FFA plot.

Erika Rice receives Tom H. Kustes Memorial Scholarship SAVANNA – Erika Rice has received the $1,000 Tom H. Kustes Memorial Scholarship, West Carroll FFA Advisers Don Mathey and Christina Polkhave announced.

Rice intends to pursue a degree in animal science at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

Erika is the daughter of Robbie and Jennifer Rice of Thomson.

In addition to the monetary

award, Erika will receive a personal recognition plaque and her name will be inscribed on a special achievement plaque on display at the school.

The scholarship was made possible by a 2005 gift to the school district in memory of Kustes, who was a lifelong livestock/grain farmer in the Thomson area before his death in 2004.

Kustes graduated in 1936 from York Community High School in

Thomson and held an honorary Chapter Farmer degree from the Thomson FFA chapter in recognition of his support of chapter activities. Kustes’ wife, Gladys, was an elementary education teacher for more than 20 years in the former Thomson school district.

Qualifying senior students are encouraged to apply in the spring to the West Carroll FFA Chapter advisers for this scholarship.

Newman cruises past Milledgeville with six-run sixth inning

dwussow@shawmedia.com STERLING – The Newman softball team took advantage of early-inning walks to establish a comfortable lead, then poured on several more runs as its bats heated up, pulling away for a 14-4, six-inning victory over Milledgeville on April 1 at Newman High School.

Comets starting pitcher Ady Waldschmidt (3-0) came out hot in the top of the first, striking out all three batters in the inning.

In the bottom of the first, Newman’s offense followed suit, putting up three runs right away.

Madison Duhon and Waldschmidt drew walks to start the inning and Jess Johns followed with a single just inside the left-field line to score Duhon from second base. Later in the inning, Kennedy Rowzee grounded out at first base, scoring Waldschmidt and then Johns, increasing the Comets’ lead to 3-0.

Newman scored two runs in the second inning and added three more in the third to build an 8-2 lead halfway through the game.

confidence they needed early, and it was a key part of securing the six-inning win.

“It gives us a lot of confidence, I think, and it makes us play harder,” Duhon said of the fast start.

Added Johns: “I think it makes us a lot more comfortable at the plate, and it takes a lot of pressure off us for the rest of the game.”

In the bottom of the second, Duhon and Waldschmidt each walked again.

Duhon took third on a wild pitch while Johns was up to bat, then a subsequent wild pitch scored Duhon. Johns smacked a single between second and third to score Waldschmidt for a 5-0 lead.

Milledgeville cut the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the third. Hannah Foster walked, Emma Foster singled and Mariah Grenoble singled to right center, scoring Hannah Foster.

Rylee Matthews then doubled just inside the left-field line to score Emma Foster.

When Lily Smith drew a walk and Milledgeville loaded the bases down 5-2, it appeared Newman’s lead might be in jeopardy.

But with two outs already secured in the inning, Waldschmidt stood

calmly in the circle and notched her ninth strikeout of the game against Kendra Hutchison, limiting the damage and preserving the Comets’ lead.

“I was very proud of the effort that our girls gave today,” Milledgeville coach Morgan Adolph said. “We’ve struggled the first three games that we’ve had in the season, so it was nice to see some of the improvements that we’ve made on defense and on offense this game.”

In the bottom of the third, Duhon doubled to score Rosengren and Addison Foster, and Johns singled under the shortstop’s glove to score Duhon.

Newman held its 8-2 lead for the next two innings.

In the top of the sixth, Smith led off for the Missiles with a single and Hutchison tripled in the next at-bat to score Smith, cutting the margin to five runs. After another Waldschmidt strikeout, Marissa Sturrup singled to score Hutchison, drawing Milledgeville to within 8-4.

After Sturrup’s RBI single, Waldschmidt settled in again, striking out the next two hitters to end the rally.

Kendal Asay took the loss for West Carroll (0-3), allowing four earned runs and 13 hits in a complete game, striking out three and walking four.

Plowman struck out nine without a walk, and Macy Olson and Addison Gitz drove in two runs each for Freeport (2-2). Olson and Kailen Pro both had three hits, and Pro, Neela Vandeberg, Kyla Plowman and Diem Beach all added RBIs. Ashton Nobis singled twice, scored twice, and had the lone RBI for Milledgeville. Izaac Toms-Smith also scored two runs, and Kieren Harris and Caden VanDyke also scored for the Missiles.

Nobis took the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs (three earned) and five hits in three innings, with three strikeouts and four walks.

Sturrup took the loss, pitching all six innings. Sturrup, Hutchison, Matthews and Grenoble drove in one run each for Milledgeville. Sturrup went 2 for 3 to lead the Missiles in hits.

Johns went 4 for 5 with a triple and four RBIs to lead Newman at the plate, while Duhon went 2 for 2 with

four RBIs, and Rowzee and Waldschmidt added one RBI apiece. Rowzee was 2 for 3.

Waldschmidt said she’s seen the Comets progress a lot in their first five games.

“We’re a lot more comfortable, and we have more confidence,” she said. “And our confidence should keep us right up.”
