Carroll County Help Center celebrating 50 years In late 1971, some local citizens were discussing what could be done in our communities to help families in need. Christmas baskets for needy families were being planned as the end of the year approached. Viola Schultz, a county public aid official, informed the group that the greatest need of low-income families in Carroll County was a place to buy good usable clothing and small household items. Christmas baskets weren’t enough. What started with these few concerned folks then grew. Members of several other faith communities around the county joined the discussions to plan a way to help our neighbors in need. For the initial start-up, congregations, organizations and individuals were invited to contribute up to $300 as a share in this outreach. In March 1972, the Carroll County Help Center was launched. The group’s purpose was to help meet the emergency needs of individuals and families, to assist people unable to help themselves and to provide opportunities for people in the county to work together. The first officers elected were Lois Frank, president; June Kingery, secre-
tary; and Rev. Tony Hawkins, treasurer. Two directors from each of the seven communities in the county (Chadwick, Lanark, Milledgeville, Mount Carroll, Savanna, Shannon and Thomson) were elected to serve on the board and take care of the needs of their respective communities. Churches, service organizations and individuals throughout the county contributed money for rent and start-up costs. A Thrift Shop opened March 17, 1972, in Savanna; rent was $100 a month. Now located at 126 S. Fourth St., Savanna, the Thrift Shop is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The board and workers are all volunteers. There are no paid salaries. Today, monthly expenses approach $1,000. Fixed costs include rent, electricity, water/sewer charges and a dumpster. Snow removal costs and higher winter utilities also impact the budget. It takes a lot of 25 cent, 50 cent and $1 items to cover operating expenses and supply additional funds to help those with emergency needs. In addition, since 1975, the CCHC board has provided scholarships for
graduating high school seniors in financial need and enrolled in a vocational or two-year educational program. The CCHC policy for giving emergency assistance requires a client to be a county resident for at least six months. Currently, we can offer up to $100 a year per family, as funds are available. The funds for emergency assistance are sent directly to the service provider by our treasurer. The Thrift Shop’s 50th Anniversary $2 a Bag Sale is Friday, March 18, and Saturday, March 19. Friday hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CCHC cooperates with Sullivan’s, Shaw’s and Lanark Food Center. They accept our food vouchers (up to $50) that are signed by board members or town contact. Before offering a food voucher, we suggest a referral to one of the three food pantries serving Shannon-Lanark, Milledgeville-Chadwick or Savanna/ Mount Carroll/Thomson. We also work with the local ministerial associations, township supervisors and Tri-Counties Opportunities Council to coordinate emergency assistance for Carroll County residents.

What can you do to participate?
Donate good, clean, used clothing of all sizes, small household items and linens. Bring items to the Thrift Shop on Wednesday mornings, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Furniture or electronics are not accepted. Volunteer to help staff the Thrift Shop on Fridays or Saturdays. Call Nancy Sweitzer at 815-622-8132 or a church in your community. Attend quarterly meetings of the Carroll County Help Center board as an interested citizen. Meetings are the fourth Tuesdays of January, April, July and October. MORRISON – The girl, now a woman, who helped her then-girlfriend Anna Schroeder try to clean up and hide the murder of her mother, was sentenced March 9 to 11½ years in prison. Calling her crimes “despicable,” “disgusting,” “disrespectful” and “callous,” Judge Trish Senneff sentenced Rachel Helm, 20, to 6½ years in prison for arson and five years for concealment of a homicide in the July 6, 2017, murder of Peggy Schroeder, who was shot between the eyes by her daughter. The sentences were recommended as part of her plea agreement. The concealment charge is six months shy of the maximum she could have received; five years for arson is the maximum, and by statute the sentences must be served consecutively. Helm was given credit for 1,705 days served in the Mary Davis juvenile detention center for girls in Galesburg and the Whiteside County Jail. That’s

With day-for-day time, she could be free in three years and five months, or less, if she earns other credits allowed for time spent in Illinois Department of Corrections educational, vocational,
treatment or other programs. Peggy Schroeder’s family “reluctantly” agreed to the terms of the plea agreement, Whiteside County State’s Attorney Terry Costello said. Had it been possible, they would have wanted longer terms, he said. “I know for a fact had Anna not known you, my sister would still be alive,” Charlene Wilkinson told Helm, reading from a prepared statement. “In my opinion, you are getting away with murder.” On Nov. 5, Senneff sentenced Schroeder, who turns 20 on July 3, to the maximum 20 years for second-degree murder. She was given credit for four years, four months served, and also is eligible for day-to-day and other IDOC credits. Per her plea agreement, Schroeder gave up her rights to appeal, or to seek probation instead of prison time. Two counts of first-degree murder and one count each of arson and concealment of a homicidal death were dismissed. The girls, 15 at the time, were convinced Peggy would not approve of
their same-sex relationship. The girls had been texting each other messages about ways to kill Peggy for two weeks, and in the end, Anna told her 53-yearold mother she had a surprise for her, had her cover her face with a towel then shot her with her own gun. Schroeder texted a picture of her mom’s body to Helm to prove she had killed her, and after Helm was dropped off later that day, the girls spent two days and nights trying to clean the blood out of the carpet. They moved the body into her bedroom and covered it with a sheet, went shopping for food, cleaning supplies and hair dye, dyed their hair then decided to run away. Before they left, Rachel set the sheet covering Peggy’s body on fire, and also one in Anna’s room. They hid the gun in a nearby cemetery, and instead of leaving town, Schroeder got a ride to her father’s home in Walnut and Helm to her home in Rock Falls, where she told her mother what happened. Schroeder was arrested later that night

Rock Falls woman sentenced to 11-plus years in prison for role in Morrison mom’s murder

Now I will admit this was surely not the career I saw myself going into, nor was it one I thought I would spend over half my life in, but it has been a career I am glad I was called into. If you know of anyone interested, send them my way. I can talk about the job and also put them in touch with the right people at the Illinois Farm Bureau. I have been contacted about finding volunteers for Mayfest weekend. The need is for tractors and tractor drivers to be part of the historical tour through town. It sounds like they have some good things planned this year. ••• Thursday marks St. Patrick’s Day and while I don’t think I have an ounce of Irish in me and I don’t even like the color green (no, this is not a tractor preference reference at all), for

Because corned beef was cheaper than lamb, the tradition likely was changed to corned beef. I won’t be partaking in any green beer, and you can save the cooked cabbage, as well. I surely will be sporting my green and enjoying some corned beef. I also tried my hand at making homemade blarney stones, and while they are not as good as I have had at the bakery, they did turn out pretty darn good considering I am not a professional baker.

Dixon, Sterling, Newman, Eastland, Fulton and Bureau Valley were all represented on the team, which was voted on by a panel of sportswriters throughout Illinois.
