Born: September 9, 1931 in Fairbury, IL Died: February 21, 2022 in Thomson, IL Ronald D. “Doc” Cahill, 90, passed away at home early Monday morning, February 21, 2022 in his home in Thomson, IL. He was born in Fairbury, IL on September 9, 1931 to Genevieve and Alfred Cahill. He attended Stockton schools, and then served two years in the US Army. He married Carol Kunz on December 16, 1954. They celebrated 67 years of marriage together in December 2021. Ron graduated from Lincoln Chiropractic College in 1959 and practiced in Stockton for 35 years. Two of his sons and a granddaughter are currently practicing chiropractors. He is survived by his wife, Carol; seven children, Lynn of Galena, Michele (Jeff) Brueggen

DENNIS HERBERT SCHAVE Born: May 6, 1942 Died: March 2, 2022 Dennis Herbert Schave, 79, of Morrison, Illinois, died peacefully in his home joining his beloved wife, Verna in heaven on March 2, 2022. A funeral service will be held Friday, March 11, 2022 at 3pm at Milledgeville Brethren Church. Burial will follow at Oak Knoll Cemetery, in Sterling, IL. Visitation will be held from 1pm to 3pm, prior to the service. Dennis was born to Forrest and Margaret Schave on May 6, 1942. He was raised in East Moline. Dennis met the love of his life, Verna, at a 4H sock hop in the Quad Cities. Hitting it off, the couple would later marry in 1963 and continue to have 58 years of loving marriage together. They later moved the Schave Family to Morrison, Illinois. Here they not only continued to build their farm, but their family grew as well. Dennis and Verna raised nine children together. He was an ardent supporter of sports, plays and concerts of his children and grandchildren, typically attending as many events as he could. Dennis had a passion for the great outdoors. He worked side by side his father, growing

Ron greatly enjoyed houseboating on the Mississippi River and served on the Galena Boat Club Board of Directors for many years. He was an avid golfer and was instrumental in the creation of the Stockton Golf Course. He also enjoyed bird hunting with his loyal dog Rusty, and fishing trips with his childhood friends, in addition to catching the Green Bay Packers play on those autumn weekends. In retirement, Ron and Carol enjoyed travel throughout the US including Alaska. He is also survived by one sister, Barbara of Madison, WI; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. His parents; sister, Noreen; and brother, Keith, preceded him in death. He will be deeply missed by his family as he was a powerful presence. Cremation rites were accorded. There will be a Celebration of Life on the Mississippi this summer. their farms and teaching his sons all about agriculture. His passion for restoring the land and hunting deepened over the years. After retiring from farming, he focused on improving the wildlife habitat in the area culminating in being awarded Wildlife Farm of the Year 2000 with his father. Even as his time was ending, he continued his plans for his orchard. Dennis was faithful to our Lord and instilled the teachings of God unto his family. He leaves behind his son Shannon wife Marsha Schave, son Ryan wife Nancy Schave, son Eric wife Karin Schave, daughter Amy husband Joel wiseman, daughter Leah husband Brad Grenoble, daughter Erin Schave, daughter Abbi, and son Noah wife Carrie Schave, along with his brother Todd wife Cindy and brother David wife Marilyn. Dennis’s blessings in life live through his remaining 20 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Preceding his death was his beloved wife Verna schave, son Richard Schave, mother and father in law Francis and Earl Hammond, sister Terry Price, mother and father Forrest and Margaret Schave. To our father: Dear God, We gratefully thank you for giving us our Dad, you must really love us, for you have given the best you had. Watch over him and bless him Lord, and keep him in your care. May he feel our love for him, is our humble heartfelt prayer. Love, your children.

Philanthropist donates land for new Carroll County Transit garage kschultz@shawmedia.com

MOUNT CARROLL – Carroll County Transit officials decided on a location for the agency’s new garage. Actually, it was a decision made for them, thanks to the generosity of retired Chadwick farmer and philanthropist Harold Andresen. He is donating a little more than an acre next to the Carroll County Senior Services Center Harold Andresen at 17612 E. Benton St., where the transit center office and the Veterans Assistance Commission also are located. Andresen also donated that land, which he bought for $96,100 in early 2018, and paid for the building’s construction. It opened in September 2020. The new garage, which will house CCT’s four buses and 10 vans, will be built in the senior center’s gravel parking lot to the left and out into the nearby field, said Alicia Kness, operations manager. Transit officials are working with an architect to firm up the design of the planned 60-by-120-foot structure, but expect to be at the point where they can put out the call for bids in one to three months, Kness said.

In January, CCT was awarded a $536,000 Rebuild Illinois grant to buy land and build the garage. Plans were to buy a wooded parcel off state Route 64 and East Benton from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Even though the land purchase now is not part of the equation, CCT still will need all of the grant for design and construction, Kness said. Through his Andresen Trust, Andresen, 85, funded 35 scholarships for Carroll County seniors last year, and the goal is to give away 35 more this year, he said Thursday. He’s also donated to 4-H and other local agricultural and civic organizations throughout the years. “We like to help out,” he said. Andresen is the brother of the late Arliss L. Andresen of Fulton, who taught in Ashton, Chadwick and Morrison schools. After she died on Oct. 16, 2012, she left her home and its acre or so of land to her brother and sister, Darlene Ladd-Hogan of Farmington, Maine, and to a Fulton church. To honor his sister’s love of nature and her little house overlooking the Mississippi River, Harold bought out the church’s share and he and his sister donated the site to the city of Fulton on the condition that it be turned into a nature center in her memory. The Andresen Nature Center at 409 N. Fourth St. is open seasonally.

The two-day conference brings together local farmers, local organizations and local businesses to highlight Illinois’ food systems from farmers to consumers. Highlights will include networking opportunities, tasting local foods and breakout sessions including financial and risk management, marketing and communications, market opportunities and technology. This is just the tip of the iceberg on what you can benefit from. We can never thank the farmers enough who have given to the harvest for all. Funds raised are distributed to the food pantries that serve our county. The generosity continues to

Sportsman’s Banquet in Thomson a success THOMSON – The event center at Majestic Pines in Thomson was alive with children and families attending the Sportsman’s Banquet on Feb. 26. Hunters and outdoorsmen brought their families from as far as Lena, Lanark, Sterling and Schaumburg to attend the mid-winter banquet. The banquet draws many hunting families. Event organizers were set up for 225 people and most seats seemed full when dinner was served. “The young kids have games to try to throw a ring over a mallard decoys head,” organizer Ron Kaufman said. “The ring toss sponsored by Barak’s Trucking in Fulton allows the kids to participate in their own activity and have a chance to win a hunting gun and many prizes. Hard Core Decoy Co. provided boxes of decoys for kids to take home at the end of the night. The very young kids had the opportunity to win BB guns. And the older kids had the chance to win hunting guns.” The banquet had many raffles set up for members to try their luck. A dice raffle lured members to try to roll dice to win sporting goods and artwork. A big, lady’s bucket raffle had many nice baskets and a SCCY 9 mm donated by Sure Shot of Clinton, Iowa, as the top prize.

The Waterfowler’s raffle featured the chance to win a hunting shotgun and a table load of decoys and waterfowl equipment. The raffle was sponsored by Quality Concrete of Clinton, Iowa. “Firearms Repair of Camanche, Iowa, donated a Winchester .22 and a deck of cards was sold to find a winner in this raffle,” Kaufman said. “The big raffles were a chance to win a Thompson/Center Compass that was set up as a coyote rifle. The top prize was a limited chance of 250 tickets to win a Winchester SX-20

gauge. This gun would appeal to a youth hunter or old hunter and was in a camo pattern.” Adam Johnson was on hand from EIC Auction of Miles and volunteered his skills for the live auction. Wildlife art, decoys, sporting goods and collectibles were sold to the highest bidders. “One of the last items on the sale was a shadow box with a wild turkey feather in it. A Native American was painted on the feather by artist Ronnie Devers from Low Moor, Iowa, and it sold for $200,”

Kaufman said. “Barn Ridge Kennel of Geneseo provided a 7-week-old female lab pup for the auction. The pup had a lot of attention all night and went home to a happy family. “Eric Engaldo was the conservation groups emcee and did a wonderful job. Money raised is used for waterfowl nesting structures and waterfowl conservation through state agencies, Kaufman said.

The FFA fed students, faculty and staff. The West Carroll School Board and administration also were invited to attend. Schmoll, Hovious and Moshure serve Shelby Williams and McKenzie Lindsay. Students were lined up out the door for the breakfast. The FFA gave a special thanks to the West Carroll kitchen staff of Sue Prins, Stacy Coats and Annamarie Pintozzi. The FFA also had a bags tournament. Victoria Reiland, Taylor Schmoll and Max Eaton compete during the lunch periods in the gym.

EVENTS Mark your calendars for March 25 and April 8 for Lenten Fish Fridays at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Morrison. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with meals served until 8 p.m. “We’re excited to see everyone in person as there will be in-person dining as well as carryout for those not comfortable with inside seating,” said Luke Vanderbleek with the Morrison Knights of Columbus. The last fish fry was March 13, 2020, with the church hosting one meal before the COVID-19 lockdowns. The menu includes fried or baked pollack fish, baked potato, coleslaw, desserts and a drink. Desserts will be provided by St. Mary’s Church families and the Council of Catholic Women. Cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Bring your friends and family, have a day off in the kitchen, and celebrate the return of the annual tradition. Funds raised will go toward the charitable works of the Knights of Columbus. The church is at 13320 Garden Plain Road, Morrison.
