ROE putting out the call for substitute teachers COVID-19 pandemic complicates finding subs for teachers

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com The area’s pool of substitute teachers already was getting pretty shallow.

Now comes COVID-19, which could result in more teachers using sick days and more subs needed in the classrooms.

“We had trouble last year, before this even started,” said Bob Sondgeroth, superintendent of the Lee-Ogle-Whiteside Regional Office of Education.

“It’s a statewide issue. There is a shortage of substitute teachers.”

What was a shortage to begin with will be exacerbated by the likelihood of teachers falling ill. Districts are doing symptom screenings and tem-

perature checks at the door at the start of a school day; staff members who test positive or show symptoms will find themselves in quarantine for up to 2 weeks or more, which means someone else will have to step into the classroom.

Sondgeroth is asking anyone interested in being a sub who has a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution to sign up through the regional office. Those with associate degrees from an accredited institution also can sign for short-term sub work, which means working in one classroom for 5 days.

The ROE pool was stretched even thinner by districts that have hired full-time subs just to be in the building, on call, Sondgeroth said.

“I understand. I think that’s a really good idea for them, because you never know when a teacher has to leave,” he said. “To have a sub in the building is fantastic.”

The Chadwick-Milledgeville School District is hoping to head off some potential problems. Monday, its board voted to raise sub pay to

$110 per day, in an effort to attract them at a time when they might be hard to find.

Other districts are planning ahead, too.

“I think we’ve called about every sub on the list to try to add to that pool as best we can,” Rock Falls High School Superintendent Ron McCord said. “We have a couple ... who sub all the time who will not be in due to this situation and their own health risks. It’s going to be a challenge from day one.”

Sterling Superintendent Tad Everett built a lot of flexibility into this district’s reopening plan with the knowledge that things could change, especially if teachers and staff fall ill.

“If we get enough teachers that are ill that we can’t replace them in the in-school learning environment, we may be forced to go remotely,” Everett said. “Those are all things we’re going to have to be flexible and fluid with.”

From district to district, there are different COVID-19 procedures in

place, and Sondgeroth is instructing subs to ask each district what those procedures are.

“If I’m a substitute, that’s the first thing I ask when I walk in to a building: Where are the wipes, what should I be doing, how do I wipe things down, what are your rules for the masks?” he said.

“Our health departments have been amazing. Lee, Ogle and Whiteside County health departments have worked with our administrators. They’ve been on many Zoom meetings with our administrators.”

There is another Zoom meeting next week to go over Illinois Department of Public Health school guidelines issued a week ago that left a lot of the details up to local health departments. Sondgeroth and school district and health department administrators will go over their plans.

Inaugural scramble was held at Lake Carroll Golf Course LANARK — The Dairy Queen in Mount Carroll hosted the 1st Annual DQ Blizzard Cup Scramble on Aug. 21 for the University of Iowa Stead Family Hospital in Iowa City.

The event was held at the picturesque Lake Carroll Golf Course in Lanark.

Franchisees Beaver and Vickie Miller wanted to do something special for the local CMN hospital because of the effect the pandemic has had on fundraising activities.

The original goal was $2,500, but the people and business in the area came out and gave unbelievable support to this first year tournament to raise $5,000.

The highlight of the day was when two families shared their experiences with the attendees of what the Iowa Stead Family Hospital has meant to them.

“There was not a dry eye in the place,” organizers said.

Winners of the first annual DQ Blizzard Cup were: Bud Miller, Lisa Walters, Dwaine Griffiths and Kay Offenheiser who shot a 15 under 57.

“Vickie and I can take no credit for the success, remember it takes a village, can’t wait until next year,” Beaver Miller said.

OBITUARIES SHARON E. HARTMAN NEWTOWN, Missouri – Sharon Esther Hartman, 77, of Newtown, Missouri, went home to be her Lord and Savior early on the morning of June 24, 2020.

Sharon was born on March 9, 1943 on a farm near Shannon, to Melvin and Esther (Ruter) Ludwig. In 1961, Sharon graduated from Shannon High School, Shannon.

On Dec. 26, 1964, Sharon was united in marriage with Charles “Chuck” Hartman at Prairie Dell Presbyterian Church near Shannon.

After marriage, Sharon attended LaMolo School of Cosmetology in 1966.

Sharon spent her adult years as a wonderful mother, secretary, hairdresser, and a caregiver to the elderly.

She also taught Sunday school, was the church pianist or organist at Prairie Dell Presbyterian Church and many other churches.

She was currently the pianist for Unionville Assembly of God Church in Unionville, Missouri.

From an early age, Sharon played her piano and other instruments. She felt truly blessed when God gave her the gift of playing by ear at the age of 35.

Sharon enjoyed photography, taking care of her flowers, feeding and watching the birds.

She loved being on the farm and loved her cats especially Paddy Paws (the favorite son), Sharon loved spending time with her family and helping them.

Sharon had a heart of gold always helping the needy, the elderly and cooking and baking for others. She also loved to play the piano at the nursing homes.

Sharon was also an amazing prayer warrior spending a lot of time praying for her friends and her family and our country.

Sharon is survived by her husband of 56 years, Chuck Hartman of Newtown, Missouri; one son, Dave (Cindy) Hartman of Newtown, Missouri; one daughter, Susy (Henry) Groezinger, Elizabeth; grandchildren, Jesse (Jordan) Hartman, Jordy (Amber) Hartman, Cody (Blair) Hartman, Joshua Hartman, Karly Hartman, Kristy (Nolan) McMurray, Kelly (Dylan) Stallings, Kyle Reinke, Lilly Groezinger, H.D. Groezinger, and Joey Groezinger; great-grandchildren, Jaedyn, Zander, Aiden, Zachary, Briley, Jaxsen, Elijah, Analiya, Brantlee, Sawyer, and Easton; and two brothers, Verlyn (Velma) Ludwig of Lanark, and Lorence (Ruth Ann) Ludwig of Forreston.

She is preceded in death by an infant

daughter, Dawn Hartman; her brother, Milford Ludwig; and her parents, Melvin and Esther Ludwig.

A life so beautiful deserves a special celebration. A memorial service in honor of Sharon’s life was held in July in Lena.

A memorial has been established in her name and can be mailed to her home at 45229 Hwy EE, Newtown, Missouri 64667 Cremation and services have been provided by A Simplified Funeral Solution.

ESTHER M. MARTIN TIPTON, Iowa – Esther M. Martin, 85, of Tipton, Iowa, previously of Lanark, passed Saturday, August 15, 2020 at the Cedar Manor Nursing Center, Tipton, Iowa.

A funeral service was Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Mt. Carroll Church of God, Mt. Carroll.

A memorial fund has been established.

Esther was born Oct. 20, 1934, in Neshola County, Mississippi, the daughter of Covert and Esther Pauline (Talbert) Lundy.

On July 2, 1960, Esther married Glenn Martin in Douglas, Georgia. They celebrated 51 years of marriage until Glenn’s passing.

She was a member of the Church of God in Mt. Carroll.

Esther was a homemaker for many years. To keep busy, she opened her own beauty shop in 1976, and worked there until she retired.

She enjoyed traveling and cooking.

She liked to sew and knit.

Esther will be dearly missed by her son, Timothy Martin of Davenport, Iowa; her daughter, Karen (Greg) Bondele of Monroe, Wisconsin; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, C. A. Lundy of Rockford, and Reverend Jerry Lundy of Louisville, Mississippi; and a sister, Helen Barber of Madison, Mississippi.

Esther is preceded in death by her husband, parents; daughter, Glenda; and two sisters, Thelma and Bernice.

Hot rods and hot weather make for a perfect show Aug. 23

BY SARAH FORD For the Prairie Advocate THOMSON — Tons of sunshine and hot rod temperatures made for a perfect Majestic Pines Car & Bike Show in Thomson on Aug. 23.

A total of 134 cars and bikes entered the inaugural show with $15 entry fees put into a 50/50 drawing, with half the cash prize donated to Northwest Medical in Chicago for cancer research through Hot Rods for a Cure.

The event drew a colorful mix of car and bikes from across the region, both old and new.

Despite the heat, organizers were pleased with the turnout. Music and food and pockets of shade provided relief from the mid-day sun.

Spectators cast their votes for the best cars, made difficult by the number of entries, quality and variety.

Steve Tegeler of Clinton, Iowa and his Scooby Doo inspired Mystery Machine was hard to miss. The 2004 movie provided inspiration for his “clone” project, a 1996 Chevy van he spruced up and has been bringing to local car shows for the past five years.

Tegeler said he did the inside work and interior panels, and a crew at J&S Autobody in Savanna provided the painting, graphics, and pinstriping. The license plate is even the same as in the movie.

“It’s a hobby, but I let the kids play with it,” he said smiling, adding that it’s his personal collection of Scooby Doo memorabilia displayed in the car.

Kevin Blackburn of Polo drove out in his 1933 Nash, also known as the Road Rat. With only 1,000 models made, the vehicle is a rarity. He said he usually does pretty well with it at car shows.

Jim Leverington of Freeport showcased a 1966 Studebaker Hawk “Gran Turismo,” a project car he and his late father worked on after rescuing it from 20 years in a dirt floor barn in South Bend, Indiana many years ago.

After they completed the project, the car sat in his dad’s garage until Jim encouraged him to show it at car shows. After a few shows, the car was given to him.

Whiteside reports five new cases STAFF REPORT The Whiteside County Health Department on Sunday announced five new cases of COVID-19: two people in their 40s, one younger than 20, and people in their 30s and 50s.

Whiteside County has had 454 cases and 18 COVID-related deaths.

Lee, Ogle and Carroll counties did not release updated data on Sunday.

Lee County has had 209 cases, 175 recoveries and one death. Ogle Coun-

ty has had 464 cases, 439 recoveries and five deaths. Carroll County has had 117 cases, 76 recoveries and four deaths.

Illinois announced 1,893 new cases and six deaths. The state has had 220,178 cases and 7,880 deaths.

Sterling has had 1,966 people tested and 166 cases. Rock Falls has had 1,138 tested and 81 cases. Dixon has had 3,681 tested and 173 cases.

Rochelle has had 2,491 tested and 216 cases.

A former track champion at the Maquoketa Speedway, he now likes to spend his time showing instead of racing.

We have sadly decided with all the concerns about social distancing that we will not have the VA Coffee or BINGO again until after the first of year.

We have been notified by AARP Safe Driving (formerly known as Defensive Driving Classes) staff that they will not hold any classes until after January of 2021. In our case they usually do not hold their first

The Inspector General of Social Security, Gail S. Ennis, continues to warn Americans about widespread phone scams where callers may impersonate Social Security or claim a Social Security-related problem, to gain your trust and steal your money.

The Social Security Administration will NEVER: Call to threaten you with arrest or legal action if you do not immediately pay a debt, fine, or fee.

Tell you that your Social Security number has been suspended, or offer to increase your benefits or resolve identity theft problems in exchange for payment.

Require payment via retail gift cards, prepaid debit cards, wire transfers, or internet currency like Bitcoin, or by mailing cash.

Demand secrecy in handling a Social Security-related problem, or tell you to make up a story to tell your friends, family, or store/bank employees.

Text you unsolicited to tell you about a problem with your Social Security number or benefits.

Email you attached documents containing your personally identifiable information.

Be very cautious if you receive an unsolicited call from the government and you don’t recognize the problem or issue they’re calling about. Do not

provide personally identifiable information over the phone.

Discuss major financial decisions with trusted friends or family. If you owe money to Social Security, the agency will mail you a letter with payment options and appeal rights.

If you receive a suspicious call: Hang up! Do not give them money or personal information!

Activities at the Senior Center Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers.

We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center. + Please note after Sept. 25 take your papers and cans to our new location, 17612 E. Benton St., Mt. Carroll, to the back of the building as recycling will have their own entrance.

Are You Turning 65?

Do you need help understanding Medicare A, B, C and D? Then come and see us at the Senior Center. We will help make this time easier for you.

Turning 65 can be very confusing with all the information you receive in the mail about which Medicare D Plan to take or which supplemental to get. If you are about to turn 65 and have questions, stop by and see our SHIP Counselors, Deb Connor and Karen Holm, and we can help you sort through the confusion. Also remember to stop at the Carroll County Courthouse to complete your Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption application and affidavit.

When you turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare, the best time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period. Your IEP includes the 3 months before, the month of, and the 3 months following your 65th birthday. If you enroll in Medicare during this time, you will avoid late enrollment penalties.

The date when your Medicare coverage begins depends on when you enroll during your IEP. For your coverage to begin as soon as possible, it is best to enroll in the first 3 months of your IEP. Your Medicare coverage will then go into effect starting the month you turn 65.

To enroll in Medicare, please stop by the Senior Center and we can do this for you.

It is important to be proactive and take the steps to enroll during your IEP. If you miss your IEP, you may be limited to specific times when you can enroll in Medicare in the future, and you may face a penalty for late enrollment, resulting in higher premiums.

What is SHIP? The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is a federally-funded grant program with the mission to empower, educate, and assist Medicare-eligible individuals, their families, and caregivers through objective outreach, counseling, and training to make informed health insurance decisions that optimize access to care and benefits.

SHIPs provide free, in depth, one-on-one benefits counseling and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries, their families, friends, and caregivers.

SHIPs operate in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands and are funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

It’s time to brag about our own Young Leaders W

e are very fortunate to have great Young Leaders here in our county.

Great people honestly, but I am going to take a minute to brag on my Young Leaders.

You have read before about the many things our group does throughout the year, and unfortunately this year with COVID-19 the annual awards program for Illinois Farm Bureau has been cancelled.

However, one thing has not been, the annual Illinois Farm Bureau Young Leader Achievement Award and the Excellence in Ag Award.

This year we are proud to say we have finalists for each award. The Achievement Award recognizes outstanding young Farm Bureau members for their efforts in production agriculture, leadership ability, and participation in Farm Bureau and other organizations.

The ideal candidate(s) is an individual or couple involved in production agriculture with most of their income subject to normal production risks.

The Excellence in Ag Award recognizes young Farm Bureau members who are actively contributing and growing through their involvement in their county and Illinois Farm Bureaus.

COMMENTARY AT A GLANCE Chastity Welch Participants are judged on their involvement in agriculture, leadership abilities, and participation in Farm Bureau and other organizations. The ideal candidate(s) is an individual or couple who does not have most of their income subject to normal production risk.

Those in the running for winning the award this year are Correy and Kellie Rahn for the Achievement Award and Jon and Erin Lower for the Excellence in Ag Award.

Either way, if they win or are the runners up, we are proud of both couples and how they represent agriculture and our organization.

Illinois Farm Bureau Young Leaders will be announcing the winner for each award on their Facebook page on Aug. 28.

This YouTube presentation hosted by the staff of Severson Dells Nature Center shows off the glory of late summer at Harlem Hills Prairie. The Harlem Hills Prairie is the state’s largest gravel prairie featuring many plant species, including several that are endangered or

threatened in Illinois. August is one of the months that northern Illinois prairies like Harlem Hills are at their finest. Besides the evening program on Sept. 1, this presentation may be found at the NIAS and Severson Dells Facebook pages starting Sept. 2. The public is welcome.

Farmers want to talk to consumers and keep them updated on agriculture, why and how they do things.

Letting passion override our fears is another good bit of advice I heard this past week during a virtual meeting. I think it is something we do not do enough of.

Farmers are very passionate about ag and the work they do yet are humble. If COVID-19 has taught us nothing else it has taught us to get uncomfortable, embrace change, and be adaptable. Â

We were very excited to be changing up the Ag Olympics at the fair and do an event we were naming Ninja Farmer. But as a speaker I was listening to the other day said, we don’t have to take the storyline we were given.

We can take the pen and write our own story. This time has taught us how to try and stay relevant. How do we adapt to what is not the new normal but the current situation we are in.
