Follow the aromas to Molly’s in Mount Carroll

BY LINDSEY SALVATELLI For Shaw Media MOUNT CARROLL – Depending on when you visit Molly’s Bakery, different scents will greet you at the door.

At 8 a.m. when the shop opens, the smell of roasted poppy seeds and sesame floats through the air as a batch of fresh bagels rise in the oven.

A little later in the morning, the distinct aroma of freshly baked bread will surround you. During lunch, you might catch a savory whiff of the weekly soups made from scratch or freshly brewed espresso coffee.

There’s one thing customers can expect, though, regardless of when they visit.

“Freshness,” owner Ben Johnson said. “In terms of the products, but also in terms of what we’re offering the community and the ingredients.”

The bakery is just one piece of the pie for Johnson and his wife, Molly McDonough, who also own the neighboring Molly’s Kitchen and Bar and The Inn at Molly’s. The Inn is a pair of suites above the restaurant, in the historic, restored 1865 building, that combine rural charm with contemporary amenities and style.

Located in the heart of downtown at 108 W. Market St., the bakery is a dream realized for the couple.

They talked about opening a bakery before they opened the restaurant at 110 W. Market in 2014, but opted to put it on the back burner while the restaurant got off the ground.

It wasn’t until January 2018 that their dream came true.

“You are always surprised by what things turn into. We always dreamed of having a little bakery in a little town somewhere,” Johnson said.

With a variety of breads baked fresh daily, salad dressings, spreads, hand pies (smaller grab-and-go pies), syrups and other baked goodies made in-house, Molly’s Bakery offers a real taste of Mount Carroll.

That’s because the fresh fruits and vegetables used to prepare menu items are often locally grown – same goes with the honey and flowers for sale at the bakery.

“In the last year or so, we kind of moved to producing our own stuff, things like onion jam; and during tomato season we sell a tomato jam.

The seasonal fruits and veggies that inspire regular dishes at the bakery also find their way into the bakery’s weekly rotating menu, adding to the businesses’ overall exclusivity.

“Our head baker [Kadina Atherton] has tried to switch up the baked goods on a weekly basis to keep it seasonal and interesting and fun for our customers, and fun for us to keep things fresh and new,” Johnson said.

Their menu is a mix of the healthy and the hearty, the savory and the sweet. You can get a garden sandwich or a pulled pork sandwich; and for dessert, try a savory scone or some shortbread cookies. There’s something for all ages and tastes. ”We’re getting a lot more kids in, which is really nice to see – moms bringing their children, dads bringing their children,” McDonough said in an interview a few months after the restaurant first opened.

“It’s just nice to see a different clientele during the day than we do in the restaurant. It feels much more like a community atmosphere.”

In that same interview, Johnson said the interaction with the community “is really fun for us, and we’ve been just amazed by the support we’ve had. … It’s amazing.”

While the country continues to grapple with COVID-19, Molly’s Bakery has reopened but has modified operation to comply with state guidance. Customers can take advantage of the outdoor seating just outside the bakery or elsewhere in the historic downtown area, and now also can go inside, properly masked, to

choose their treats.

Molly’s Bakery is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday.

City is one of the top 10 cities in the nation for outdoor adventure

BY SARAH FORD Shaw Media SAVANNA – This Mississippi River town was chosen by USA Today’s 10 Best contest as one of the top 10 cities in the nation in which to have an outdoor adventure.

“It’s such an honor, and so exciting to be recognized,” Mayor Chris Lain said. “It’ll bring in a lot of people, and help the county and the region.”

Savanna took the fourth spot, while Beaufort, North Carolina was ranked No.1. Sitka, Alaska, Spearfish, South Dakota, and Telluride, Colorado also were among the 10.

According to USA Today, a panel of experts partnered with its 10 Best editors to pick the initial nominees, and the top 10 winners are determined by a popular vote.

the town was in the running for the top 20, and later that it had made the top 10, although he had to wait to officially announce it when he posted it on the Savanna’s Facebook page.

As part of the accolades, the town can use the 10 Best logo on signage

near its entrances.

In Savanna, there is truly a lot to explore – just beyond the historic downtown, visitors have ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, such as hiking and exploring Mississippi Palisades State Park, biking the Great River Bike Trail, following the wine trail, playing at nearby golf courses, visiting the Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center, or fishing, boating, kayaking, and tubing on nearby lakes and rivers.

There are many adventure options, Lain said. His favorite activities are hiking Palisades park and boating the Mississippi River.

Two adventure buses roll through the town seven days a week, transporting guests to tubing trips from smaller rivers to the mouth of the Mississippi.

Paddleboat, bike and kayak rentals make it easier for visitors to “really take advantage” of what Savanna has to offer, Lain also notes.

Five new cases of COVID-19 in Whiteside County Illinois Department of Public Health issues warning for 11 counties, including JoDaviess Staff Report The Whiteside County Health Department on Sunday announced five new cases of COVID-19, involving one person in their 20s, one in their 50s, and three in their 60s.

Carroll County had five new cases on Sunday, with two people in their 40s and the others in their 30s, 60s and 70s. Ogle County does not report coronavirus statistics on the weekend.

Whiteside County has had 328 total cases and 16 COVID-related deaths. Lee County has had 143 cases, 117 recoveries and one death. Carroll County has had 49 cases and three deaths.

Ogle County has had 378 cases, 347 recoveries

and five deaths. Illinois had 1,467 new cases on Sunday and 14 COVID-related deaths. The state has had 181,943 cases and 7,517 deaths.

The Lee County Health Department announced nine new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, eight of whom are residents or staff members of the Jack Mabley Developmental Center in Dixon.

All of those cases are from one house and none are severe, the health department said in a news release.

The Illinois Department of Public Health has issued warnings for 11 counties, including Jo Daviess County, which falls in the Northwest Illinois region.

According to the IDPH, the counties under warning saw outbreaks associated with business operations and activities posing higher risk for disease spread, including school graduation ceremonies, a rise in cases among late teens and 20s, parties and social gatherings, people going to bars, long-term care outbreaks, clusters of cases associated with restaurants and churches, and big sports events including soccer, golf, and softball tournaments.

Residents of many communities are not wearing face coverings that have been proven to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Public health officials are finding that most contacts to cases are testing positive as well, the IDPH said.

Applications will be coming for vote-by-mail Lee and Whiteside counties to send residents the form

BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@shawmedia.com Lee and Whiteside counties soon will be sending out thousands of vote-by-mail applications to community members for the Nov. 3 election.

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the governor signed a vote-by-mail expansion bill in June that requires counties to send vote-by-mail applications to voters who cast a ballot in the 2018 general election, the 2019 consolidated election or the 2020 general primary election, as well as voters who registered or changed addresses after the March primary.

Whiteside County Clerk Dana Nelson is encouraging voters to consider voting by mail as a safe,

secure and convenient alternative to in-person voting.

Whiteside and Lee counties will be mailing applications to voters by the end of the month, and community members should receive them within 2 weeks.

The deadline for applying for a mail ballot is Oct. 29, and ballots will be mailed to applicants beginning Sept. 24, which is the first day of early voting.

As other organizations are also sending applications, Nelson is asking that voters use the one

they send out from 200 E. Knox St. in Morrison, complete the postcard and mail it back to the County Clerk’s office before Oct. 29.

After Oct. 29, voters can still receive a mail ballot by applying in-person at the County Clerk’s office in Morrison. Ballots must be postmarked no later than Nov. 3 to be accepted, and properly postmarked ballots will be accepted through Nov. 17.

Lee County’s early voting begins Sept. 24, and those who wish to vote in-person can do so on the first floor of the election department from 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday in the old Lee County Courthouse, 112 E. Second St. in Dixon.

LANARK – Alexa Patterson of Lanark was named a winner in the 2020 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater University Writing Awards.

STERLING -Kaleb Lee Ebersole, 25, of Sterling, died Wednesday, July 29, 2020.

Kaleb was born August 5, 1994 in Sterling, the son of Wayne and Tammy (Dimmig) Ebersole.

Kaleb was an amazing son, brother, and father. He enjoyed life on the farm, helping with the show cattle, and golfing with his brothers.

Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and grilling out.

Survivors include his parents, Wayne (Tammy) Ebersole of Polo; his fiancée, Magdelyn Dravis of Sterling; two daughters, Jo Lynn Ebersole of Sterling, Lilah; one son, Lane of Sterling; four brothers, Justin (Nicki) Ebersole of Milledgeville, Derek (Katie) Ebersole of Jerseyville, Blake (Gabby Carr) Ebersole of Sterling, Lucas (Kailee Forbes) Ebersole of Sterling; maternal grandparents, Joan Dimmig of Florida, Dennis Dimmig of Sterling; paternal grandparents, Don (Linda) Ebersole of Polo; nieces, Kendra, Charlee, Payzleigh, and Hadley.

He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandparents, John (Betty) Grobe and Don (Betty) Dimmig; and paternal great -grandparents, Walter (Mildred) Conklen, Don (Marjorie) Ebersole.

A funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 3, at the Carroll County Fairgrounds. Burial was at Science Ridge Mennonite Cemetery.

As evident by his career choice, Eston had a passion for driving.

One of his favorite ventures was traveling with Elsie and friends.

He enjoyed the great outdoors, spending many hours camping and fishing with his family.

Even when he was home, he could often be found tending to, and mowing, the lawn, whether it needed it or not.

All Honor Flights, Whiteside picnic, canceled COVID-19 pandemic cited as reason for the cancellations STAFF REPORT STERLING – The Whiteside County Honor Flight of the Quad Cities Committee canceled all flights to Washington, D.C., as well as the annual Honor Flight picnic, out of concern over COVID-19.

Planning will continue, and flights will resume as soon as it is deemed safe.

How to get involved

Honor Flight is a national nonprofit network with 131 hubs in 45 states, including Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, which serves veterans within a 75-mile radius.

The program sends World War II, Korea and Vietnam veterans on a one-day, jam-packed trip to Washington, D.C., to explore all the war memorials and other attractions.

The flights, all funded by dona-

tions, are free to all veterans, who are accompanied by volunteer guardians who pay their own way and help the veterans throughout the day.

BRIEFS Scholarships awarded in Carroll County SAVANNA – The Carroll County Help Center Lois Frank Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to three local students.

Three $400 scholarships have been given, one for each school district in Carroll County.

The recipients of this year’s scholarships are Alyvia Woodard, Milledgeville High School; Maddie Gallentine, Eastland Jr.-Sr. High School and Ryleigh Haring, West Carroll High School.

Since 1975 the CCHC Board has provided scholarships for graduating high school seniors in financial need and enrolled in a vocational or two year educational program.

It has been a long time since I brought Maggie, our dog to work with me, but I didn’t feel right leaving her at home knowing she was going to be in the house for 7 hours.

It ended up just like old times. She grabbed her ball, curled up under my desk, and enjoyed a nap.

It is no wonder she has separation anxiety.

Every time I got up, she followed

me wherever I was going. I had someone tell me they don’t like when people talk to their animals.

Well she does understand a lot of what I say it seems. She knows her basic commands, but she also knows when I say “Nib is in your food” she races to her bowl and gets the cat out of it.

Program designed to help very low income farmworkers FREEPORT — The Farmworker & Landscaper Advocacy Project FLAP, has received a grant in the amount of $20,000 from the Freeport Community Foundation that serves the residents of Stephenson, Jo Daviess and Carroll counties.

The grant will help FLAP to provide educational information and resources, support for utilities payments and financial assistance to very low-income workers in Jo Daviess County.

The monies for this grant were awarded to the Freeport Community Foundation by the Illinois COVID-19 Response Fund (ICRF), said Arlo Chapple, FLAP’s Development & Communications Assistant in a July 21 press release.

“This grant will assist FLAP in meeting immediate and urgent needs in the area in light of social and economic conditions associated with the COVID-19 crisis,” Chapple said. “The organization will be reaching out to Jo Daviess County’s very low-income population of Latino workers experiencing a financial hardship brought on by the effort to contain the COVID-19 pandemic to provide this much-needed help. FLAP’s Outreach Assistants will use the organization’s network and extensive history of helping workers in Jo Daviess County to identify those individuals requiring

the most assistance, coordinate the transfer of emergency funds, and provide access to resources available to the community in this difficult time.”

Chapple said many of these workers are unable to pay rent or utilities, have a lack of access to food and essential supplies, and are experiencing financial insecurity.

“100% are very low-income Latinos working in the following industries: cannery, farms, greenhouse, landscaping, meat, nursery, packinghouse, poultry, restaurants and snow plowing. They were barely making minimum wage even before the pandemic, and now they are struggling even more. Latinos are one of the racial groups most affected by the pandemic. They comprise about 17% of the state’s population.

In Jo Daviess County there are 21,366 people, 3% of whom are Hispanic or Latino,” Chapple said.

Freeport Community Foundation has a 45-year history as a community-based charitable organization guided by community leaders who are dedicated to providing financial solutions for current and future community needs.

During that time, the FCF has accumulated nearly $5 million in net

assets and awarded over $3 million in grant funding to non-profit organizations and projects throughout northwest Illinois, the press release said.

Since April 2020, the FCF has distributed $360,000 in COVID-19-related emergency funding. Of those funds, $100,000 came from the Foundation’s Community Needs/Matt Marvin Unrestricted Fund, and the remaining $260,000 was awarded to the FCF via two, separate grants from the Illinois COVID-19 Response Fund.

The FCF originally became aware of the Illinois COVID-19 Response Fund through the organization’s involvement in the Alliance of Illinois Community Foundations (AICF).

All ICRF funds are designated to support the emerging needs of those at-risk populations most severely impacted by the COVID pandemic.

This goal dovetails with the FCF’s own mission to empower non-profits to develop solutions that help northwest Illinois communities thrive, the release said.

Area coaches grateful for any type of season

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com If these were normal times, Lucas Healy would be a couple of weeks away from starting soccer practice.

But these are the days of pandemic, when everything has been upended and, instead of preparing for the next soccer season in the heat of August, he and the Dixon Dukes will be preparing in what might be the snowy, blustery days of late February.

“It will add to the fun of it, but I’m sure it will hurt the day after,” Healy said.

For football and volleyball players as well, the wait for next season will be longer than they thought, as those sports now are pushed to the spring.

Sterling’s volleyball coach Dale Dykeman is thankful there will be a season, even if it has to wait.

Forreston football coach Kyle Zick also is thankful that there will be a season.

“That alone is great,” Zick said.

“I think it will bring challenges, but looking at the alternative, I think all coaches in the area will be fine with playing in perhaps cold weather to start, maybe a lot of snow. That’s a better option than not playing at all.”

The IHSA would not commit 100% to there being a state tournament, although the association said it would do everything it could to schedule one on a sport-by-sport basis.

For some athletic directors, there still are unanswered questions.

“The two sports, cross country and golf, I told them ‘You’re on, you can just keep going.’ What they’ve been doing, they can continue to do within the restrictions and guidelines,” Rock Falls athletic director Rich Montgomery said.

“I told the other coaches, they should probably just shut down and then after Labor Day, which is the next time we can start contact days, by then we’ll have clarification on what can take place.”

There even are questions remaining about what exactly a spring football season might look like.

“What I’m reading from the IHSA is that there would be seven regular-season games,” Dixon coach Jared Shaner said. “So obviously there’s still some question marks there that I know will be answered in time. Will those all be conference games? Will they be district-format games? Are we responsible for scheduling them?

Will the IHSA do it?”

Shaner also pointed out that in a lot of the traditional spring sports, teams are lucky to get outside a few times a week early in the season, when the snow lingers and games and practices can get rained or snowed out. That is what football and boys soccer teams will face in spring 2021.

That makes Sterling AD Greg King thankful for the turf field at Roscoe Eades Stadium, and Newman AD Mike Papoccia thankful for its indoor multipurpose gym.

“I know what spring softball and baseball’s about. You’re lucky if you go 2 days in a week without rain,” Papoccia said. “It’s going to make it interesting.”

“It’s going to be different,” Zick said. “I have no concept of what strain that’s going to put on kids, the community, coaches, coaches’ wives.

You’re going to go straight through, because you’re still going to do the spring [sports] seasons in the summer, and so it is going to be different. … But if that’s the dilemma we’re facing in June, that’s a good problem to have, because it means we got to play football.”

Some fall sports are on as scheduled, although coaches and athletes in golf, cross country, girls swimming and girls tennis will have to adapt to some changes. It is likely that some of the larger meets will have to be dropped from the schedule.

“Right now, I would doubt we would have any big invites,” Montgomery said. “Everything’s going to be, for cross country it will be duals at best.”

The limitations on larger events could extend into the winter sports.

For a lot of teams, the restrictions will mean some changes in who they play in other ways as well.

Sterling, for example, was scheduled to travel to Iowa to face North Scott. That football game can’t happen now, since Sterling’s season is going to begin months after North Scott’s will end.

“They’re down to a seven-game schedule [in Iowa], but they can schedule more if they want to,” King said. “They wanted to play and we wanted to play, but it’s not going to be an option now.”

Sterling’s volleyball team was planning a trip to a high-level tournament in Nebraska as well as a trip to Pleasant Valley in Iowa. Those trips also are off.

As much change as there was for the schedule, many area athletic directors saw the silver lining in the IHSA’s plan.

“The biggest thing is, our kids are going to have an opportunity to participate,” King said. “That’s the best part about it. Is it ideal? No. It’s kind of frustrating when states around us are going on with their seasons, but it is what it is.”

Healy also plays for the Dukes’ boys tennis and basketball teams.

“Busy from January on,” he said.
