Six new COVID-19 cases in Whiteside County Increases in Carroll County prompt Savanna city buildings to close to the public STAFF REPORT Whiteside County had nine new cases of COVID19 and one additional recovery on Sunday. The new cases involve three people younger than 20 as well as people in their 20s, 40s and 70s. Carroll County reported five new cases late Friday, with one each in their 40s, 60s and 70s and two in their 80s. Lee and Ogle counties do not report COVID-19 statistics on the weekend. Whiteside County has had 283 cases and 16 COVID-related deaths. Lee County has had 120 cases, 109 recoveries and one death. Ogle County has had 362 cases, 323 recoveries and five deaths. Carroll County has had 34 total cases with two deaths. Savanna Mayor Chris Lain announced on Facebook that “Due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in our area, the decision has been made to close all City of Savanna buildings to the public. Please call City Hall or email for questions. The drop box outside City Hall will be available for

payments.” Lain said all meetings that were scheduled to take place next week have been moved to Zoom. “Following the recommendation of the State and CDC is very important. Please practice social distancing, wear masks in public places, wash hands frequently and not gather in large groups,” he said in the post And Sullivan Foods, based in Savanna are now requiring that everyone wear a face mask or covering while shopping in their stores. Face masks are also available for purchase for $1. “We ask those of you with medical conditions preventing you from wearing a covering to utilize our online shopping with curbside pick up service at www.sullivansfoods.net or download our shopping app from Google Play or the App Store,” Sullivan’s post said. Vendors will not be allowed on our premises without mask as well.

“Yes, we have heard both sides of this issue many times and some will not be agreeable about our decision, but please know our sole intent is to help protect our communities. We are grateful to those of you who have adapted to this ever changing situation and the safety measures we have initiated over these challenging months,” the post said. “We will continue to monitor our processes and will be sure to update you as any other changes are made. Thank you kindly for your understanding and for shopping Sullivan’s Foods.” Carroll County Health Department officials said on July 23 that they have been working closely with Big Meadows Nursing Home, which as of last week, has had one staff and two residents test positive for COVID–19. “They have conducted COVID-19 testing on staff and residents and will continue to monitor the situation. They have also reached out to family members and let them know,” the health department said. Visitor restrictions and screening processes remain in place for all the enter the facility. Illinois had 1,426 new cases on Saturday with 12 COVID-related deaths. The state has seen 169,883 total cases and 7,397 deaths. Sterling has seen 1,460 tests conducted with 116 positive results. Rock Falls has had 810 tests and 57 cases. Dixon has had 2,517 tests and 109 cases. Rochelle has had 1,927 tests and 183 cases.

He and 11 others are in 2-week quarantine BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ KSCHULTZ@SHAWMEDIA.COM MORRISON – A Whiteside County jail inmate is in medical isolation after testing positive for COVID-19, the sheriff’s department said in a

news release. The inmate, who has been in custody since March 12 and who showed “absolutely” no symptoms, was to be sent to another facility, and so per pro- Sheriff John tocol, was tested by Booker the Whiteside County Health Department, Sheriff John Booker said. Last Wednesday, the test results

came back positive, and the inmate, who is in his 20s to 30s, is in medical isolation for the required 14-day quarantine. All 11 inmates in his cell block, the only ones who were exposed, also are quarantined for 2 weeks, Booker said. The health department utilized the jail’s sally port to do drive-through testing of most of his correctional staff today, and by Monday, all correctional deputies will have been

tested, in an effort to determine how an inmate who has been jailed 4 months was exposed, he said. If those tests come back negative, “we’ll have to expand testing to see how it got into the jail,” Booker said, adding that all staff members wear masks when interacting with inmates. This is the first known COVID-19 case in the jail since the pandemic began.

Family fun in Lanark in a sunflower maze Business specializes in growing garlic BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com LANARK — The owners of Straddle Creek Gardens decided to plant sunflowers to help their bee population. But now those three acres of big yellow flowers have plenty of people buzzing about. “We have our own bees and we planted the sunflowers for them,” said Darrin Eubanks who owns and operates the site with his wife Jenny. “We got a lot of attention and people wanted to do cuts. Then we had enough to start a maze.” People are now flocking to the maze to pick flowers and take pictures. “COVID has been a big boost for us,” Darrin said. “People need family activities outdoors. A lot of families are spending the day here. The Carrasco family from Chicago made the trip from their home in Lake Carroll on Saturday. “This is amazing,” said Josie. “The day was looking on the gloomy side so I said, ‘let’s go on over before the sunflowers are gone’.” Josie’s husband, Ron, liked the visual appeal of the sunflowers as well as their other benefit for the bees. “It’s nice what the owners decided to do and to help the bees of course,” he said. Straddle Creek Gardens’ specialty is farming garlic. It’s grown organically and sold on site, at farmer’s markets and online in forms like powder and salt The gourmet garlic is planted in October and harvested beginning in July. All of the processing is done on site. Darrin and Jenny usually attend national garlic festivals, but those events were canceled this year due to COVID-19. “We’re hoping to host a garlic event in the fall to show people how we grow it,” Darrin said. In the fall, Straddle Creek does a free fall festival with pumpkins and hayrides.

OBITUARIES MOUNT CARROLL – Edna Mae Tegeler, age 95, of Mount Carroll, died Saturday, July 18, 2020 at Allure of Mount Carroll. Edna Mae was born September 28, 1924 in Fulton, the daughter of Klaas and Effie (VanderVinne) Wiersema. She married Lawrence W. Tegeler on February 24, 1950 and was a homemaker. Edna Mae was a current/charter member of Faith Reformed Church in Lanark, where she taught Sunday school and catechism, and was a RCYF Youth Leader. She attended the rural Spring Valley Grade School, Lockhart School in rural Fulton and graduated from 8th grade from Fairhaven School in rural Carroll County. She was a foster parent for many years, and also sold Avon. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Tegeler of Mt. Carroll; one

daughter, Laurinda (Rich) Ten Pas of Stockton; one son, Roger (Sue) Tegeler of Maynard, Iowa; two brothers, Alvin Wiersema of Morrison and Leroy (Mary Jean) Wiersema of Sterling; four grandchildren, Pachia (Mark) Rice, Nicole (Jim) Tartaglia, Tabatha (Jesse) Osmundson and Joshua (Becky) Tegeler; and eight great-grandchildren, Payton Broshouse, Elijah Rice, Piper Brown, Jameson Brown, Lydia Tegeler, William Osmundson, Jamie Osmundson and Caleb Tegeler. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Alta Wiersema and Mary Holesinger; and four brothers, Henry, Richard, Marvin and Paul Wiersema. A service will take place at a later date. Memorials have been established to FHN Hospice, 773 West Lincoln Blvd.,

ed to go full-time at the garden. Straddle Creek has been in business for two years. The Eubanks also have goats on site and sell produce such as strawberries and tomatoes. ‘They enjoy working on the 10-acre property with their grandchildren. “We want families to come out and make mem-

his may seem late, but timing on my column and happenings are not always lined up. First off, let me apologize on behalf of our organization to anyone who came to the membership appreciation and did not get served. From the time I have been manager, the most people we have ever served at our annual event is 420 and for the last six/seven years we have only had around 350. We were prepared for 500 and scrambled during the event to serve 650. We unfortunately had people who had to wait, and we had people who left unserved. This was a good and bad problem to have. We are thrilled we had a record crowd, but we also regret that we could not serve all our members who came. I need to thank our directors who worked diligently running around as we tried to get everyone taken care of as quickly as we could. I also need to thank Diane and Jen from Rhett Coatney’s office for helping prepare the meals. Thank you goes out to the Carroll County Sheriff’s department for their assistance with traffic control. We had no idea we would be needing that assistance as well. And finally, to Scott with Custom Catering & BBQ for being able to assist us as our food was running out and allowed us to feed another 150 people beyond what we were prepared for. We are certainly working on an improved process if this is how we chose to do the event next year as a drive thru.

Hello everyone. Well here it is August already. I donâ€™t know about you but this year has flown by. There will be no VA Coffee or BINGO again this month. We have been notified by AARP Safe Driving (formerly known as Defensive Driving Classes) staff that they will not hold any classes until January of 2021. In our case they usually do not hold their first class until April or May. Heart to Heart Classes will resume on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 11:30 a.m. Remember if you havenâ€™t filled out your Census Form to do so as soon as possible. These forms are very important so make sure they are filled out and returned. If you do need help filling out your form, we would be happy to help you. Please call 815-244-1800 to set up an appointment. Remember if you come in to do the application for your license plate discount (The Benefit Access Application) please bring your 2019

income taxes with you. If you do not file income taxes then you need to bring your 1099 for all you income including Social Security. Please call ahead to set up an appointment at 815-244-1800. AARP Foundation Tax Aide Service BY SANDRA AUDE Carroll County Local Tax-Aide Coordinator For a very unusual and unprecedented year, the 2019 tax season has finally come to an end (July 15, 2020). As the rest of this year goes forward, I only hope that everything begins to get back to some normalcy whatever that may be. I would like to take this opportunity to extend thanks and gratitude to our very dedicated volunteers who work the TaxAide program in Carroll County. The tax season started back on December 5, 2019 for these people beginning with training and certification. Carroll County tax preparation actually started on February 5, 2020 and was abruptly suspended on March 16 and finally completely closed down in June due to COVID 19. Volunteers are: Sandra Aude, Donna Bausman, Mary Cummins, Virginia DeSwarte, Laurie Foltz, Pat Fox, Diane Frese, Jeannie Greenwald, Mary Ann Hutchison, Bill

Megan, Bunny Oviatt, Connie Reese, Jud Smith, and Jim Wheeler. The many hats worn by these people include greeter, client in-take/ interview facilitator, tax preparation, quality review, local coordinator, tech coordinator, and whatever is needed to help our program run smoothly. It is a good group of people and we enjoy helping the public with their taxes. Do you qualify for help with your prescription drug cost? What is Extra Help with Medicare prescription drug plan costs? Anyone who has Medicare can get Medicare prescription drug coverage. Some people with limited resources and income may also be able to get Extra Help to pay for the costs — monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription co-payments — related to a Medicare prescription drug plan. The Extra Help is estimated to be worth about $4,000 per year. Many people qualify for these important savings and don’t even know it. To qualify for Extra Help: • You must reside in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia; • Your monthly income for 1 cannot be over $1,561.00 THIS IS THE 2019 FPL per month and for 2 not

over $2,114.00 per month. • 2019 resource limits are $12,890 for an individual or $27,220 for a married couple living together. • Resources include such things as bank accounts, stocks, and bonds. We do not count your home, car, personal possessions, life insurance, burial plots, irrevocable burial contracts or back payments from Social Security or SSI.) If you have Medicaid, a Medicare Savings Program or you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you should get Extra Help automatically. Statues of soldiers at the Korean War Veterans Memorial, commemorates those who served in the Korean War. The memorial which is located in West Potomac Park, Washington, DC, southeast of the Lincoln Memorial and just south of the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall.

Veterans of Korean war should call about Agent Orange exposure Veterans who served in a unit in or near the Korean demilitarized zone anytime between Sept. 1, 1967 and Aug. 31, 1971 are presumed to have been exposed to Agent Orange. Veterans do not have to show that they were exposed to Agent Orange to be eligible for disability compensation for any of the diseases on the Agent Orange recognized list. Some of the more common presumptive conditions are: Diabetes Mellitus, type 2, Ischemic Heart Disease, Prostate Cancer, Respiratory Cancers, Soft Tissue Sarcoma and Hodgkin’s disease. There are more conditions on the list then just these. If you have been exposed to

Agent Orange and are given any kind of diagnosis from a doctor, ask them if it is Agent Orange related. The same applies to blue water veterans. We have a list of all the ships that were in the Agent Orange zone determined by the VA. If you aren’t sure if the ship you served on was in the zone, call us and we can find out for you. If you are not sure your condition is Agent Orange related, call us so that we can see if it is on the list. The VA has been working on adding new conditions to the list for some time now, but have not done so yet. We are hoping that this gets done sooner rather then later.

Activities at the Senior Center Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center. Seniors Around the County The Table The Great River Outreach Table is part of the Great River Outreach Center in Savanna and offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. Do you need help understanding Medicare A, B, C and D? Then come and see us at the Senior Center. We will help make this time easier for you. Turning 65 can be very confusing with all the information you receive in the mail about which Medicare D Plan to take or which supplemental to get. If you are about to turn 65 and have questions, stop by and see our SHIP Counselors, Deb Connor and Karen Holm, and we can help you sort through the confusion. Also remember to stop at the Carroll County Courthouse to complete your Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption application and affidavit. When you turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare, the best time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period. Your IEP includes the 3 months before, the month of, and the 3 months following your 65th birthday. If you enroll in Medicare during this time, you will avoid late enrollment penalties. The date when your Medicare coverage begins depends on when you enroll during your IEP. For your coverage to begin as soon as possible, it is best to enroll in the first 3 months of your IEP. Your Medicare coverage will then go into effect starting the month you turn 65. To enroll in Medicare, please stop by the Senior Center and we can do this for you. It is important to be proactive and take the steps to enroll during your IEP. If you miss your IEP, you may be limited to specific times when you can enroll in Medicare in the future, and you may face a penalty for late enrollment, resulting in higher premiums.
