Nurse to donate kidney to Shannon teenager Social media started the match between donor and recipient

BY LYNETTE FORTH For the Prairie Advocate While most Illinois residents have been cooped up in their homes, social distancing, and praying they don’t become ill, two families in Carroll County have been preparing for a life changing operation—the kind that gives the gift of life.

Thirteen year old Andrew Sweitzer, of Shannon, will receive a new kidney next week at the University of Madison, thanks to donor Jessica Hockman of Mount Carroll.

Sweitzer was born with a condition known as Williams Syndrome, which is a rare neurodevelopmental genetic disorder that features mild learning or developmental challenges, and many medical problems.

Andrew was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome when he was just a year old.

While Andrew’s kidney’s had not been working properly for some time, doctors recently decided that the time had come for a transplant.

A “Go Fund ME” page, “Support for Andrew”, was started on Facebook to help the family with the cost of travel, and medical expenses.

That page resulted in an unexpected outcome which would forever change the lives of a local nurse, and a young boy.

“There is a 1 in 10,000 chance that all people born with Williams will have one bad organ, but we didn’t know what organ that would be.

About two years ago, his kidney function levels dropped to only

17%,” said Chris Sweitzer, Andrew’s dad.

After seeing the post on social media, Hockman, a nurse, was immediately interested, and began the lengthy process to see if she would be a good candidate for Andrew.

“My donor story started with the helpless feeling of several friends having their young children diagnosed with cancer,” she said. “As a mother myself, it was a helpless feeling. I wanted to help, but not sure how. Then, a friend from Lanark shared Lori Dyson’s (Sweitzer’s mother) desperate Facebook post asking for a kidney donor for her son.

“The only information was that he is blood type A positive, which I am as well. That struck an immediate chord with me,” Hockman said. “I clicked the link for UW Madison’s transplant inquiry and answered their first few basic health questions. Withe each section of online questions, you start their basic health screening.

“I passed each section, and submitted to begin inquiry into possible donation. I sent Lori a private message telling her I had seen her post, Lynette Forth/For the Prairie Advocate and wondered if she would mind Kidney transplant recipient Andrew Sweitzer met his donor Jesica Hockman for the first telling me more about Andrew. Hockman said that information affected her dramatically.

“This really pulled at my heartstrings and had me fully invested in pursuing donation for him, as I have an older sister that is special needs due to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome,” she said. “I have been a nurse for 11 years now, and so I immediately jumped into research and studying living kidney donation.

Continued from Page 2 “UW has an entire team dedicated to the living donor process, and I had the first of many phone calls with my newly assigned coordinator. The entire first portion was gathering a full health history, and ensuring that I was up to date on all recommended health screenings.”

Making the Decision Hockman said the donor team ensures not only that an interested donor is healthy enough for donation, but delves into ensuring donors are fully aware of what the decision entails for them.

“I was given lots and lots of links, printed information, and resources to ensure this was the right decision for me,” she said. “I was contacted by my awesome coordinator multiple times to see if I had any questions, concerns, needs etc. This was over the course of about two months, as they gathered my health history, reviewed it, and let me continue to research and consider.”

But then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and for a few weeks all routine transplants were placed on hold for safety reasons.

“Then, I received a call that due to Andrew’s age, and declining kid-

ney function, he was granted special permission to proceed as his health was very much at risk,” Hockman said. “When I reached out to let them know I wanted to proceed with testing, they mailed a kit to take to my local hospital to draw blood to ensure that Andrew and I were compatible donation.

Great Match “We were a surprisingly great match, which came as no surprise to me, as I felt in my gut this was meant to be”.

Hockman said the days ahead held many blood tests, chest x-rays, CT scans, and meetings with various specialty doctors to ensure that Andrew would be getting “a top notch, fully healthy kidney from a fit and healthy donor”.

Finally, after much discussion, research, and testing, the team of hospital board members, deemed it official and Hockman was approved for a direct donation to Andrew.

A date was set for June 9, and the final testing scheduled to include COVID-19 screening for Hockman, Andrew, and Andrew’s parents Chris and Lori.

After the surgery, neither Andrew or Lori can leave the hospital room for two weeks. If they do, they cannot reenter the hospital, due to pandemic restrictions. Under normal

circumstances, the hospital stay for this type of surgery would be only 5 or 6 days.

Andrew will be monitored in intensive care for the first 24 hours after the operation, before being moved to a regular room for a 14-day strict quarantine.

Hockman said Andrew will be receiving her left kidney which she laughingly refers to as “Laverne”, as in “LaVerne and Shirley.

Her portion of the surgery will last approximately 3-5 hours and she could be released in as few as 24 hours, dependent on complications, and pain control.

“Jessica means the world to us right now,” Chris said of Hockman.

“For someone to have never met us to do this, there is no way to explain it. Since Andrew is so young, the new kidney can last him years”.

Andrew has a large support system, including four sisters and three brothers.

“I have felt from that first Facebook post that this was what I was meant to be, as cheesy as that sounds. I only hope that Andrew’s surgery goes phenomenally well, as does his recovery,” she said. “I hope Laverne gives him many healthy years and I am so very fortunate to be in a position to help him and give another mother the gift of a healthier child.

“I think more people should be aware of the simple gift of life involved in living donation. As a nurse, and human, I don’t feel you’ve ever really lived unless you can do something for someone that can never repay you. With no expec-

FATAL FIRE

One adult, two kids die in June 1 fire in Sterling

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@shawmedia.com STERLING – The victims of the early morning apartment fire on June 1 were a mother, her two young daughters and a niece, two of whom died, and a neighbor, who also was killed.

Celina Serrano, 13, and her cousin, Shayla Walker, 8, of Davenport, died at the scene. Neighbor Carrie A. (Hall) Hose, 49, also was killed.

Celina’s mother, Alma Walker, 35, and her sister, 12-year-old Teleah Serrano, were injured. Carrie A. Hose, 49, of Sterling, also died in her apartment.

The fire began around 12:25 a.m. and spread throughout the second floor and vestibule of the complex, Detective Sgt. Pat Bartel said.

Officers were told that people were trapped in the building, and Sterling and Rock Falls officers as well as Whiteside County Sheriff deputies were able to position a squad car

Fire crews from Sterling, Rock Falls, Dixon Rural, Dixon City, Milledgeville and Morrison responded.

It’s one of the worst fatal fires in the Sauk Valley in the last few years.

On Nov. 21, 2017, a family of six died in a house fire at 204 N. Miami Drive in Lost Nation. They were Timothy Shaw, 39, Melissa Shaw, 37, and their children, Ethen, 17, LeAnne, 15, Hailey, 12, and Dylan, 11.

On Jan. 13, 2016, five members of a Rock Falls family died. Patrick Hopkins, 61, his wife, Mary (Adams) Hopkins, 49, their daughter Maggie, 26, son Donovan, 16, and daughter Katie Jo, 13, died in the fire at their two-story home at 414 Second Ave. On Nov. 10, 2017, a fire in a two-story home at 209 W. Second St. in Leaf River killed 19-year-old volunteer firefighter Greg Wood and sent his father and brother to the hospital.

Rock Falls man charged with arson in fatal fire

BY RACHEL RODGERS Shaw Media STERLING – The Rock Falls man charged with arson in the June 1 fatal fire at Western Apartments has a history of substance abuse and theft-related convictions in the Sauk Valley, according to court records.

Steven W. Coleman, 40, is charged with three counts of aggravated arson, punishable by 6 to 30 years in prison, and residential arson, punishable by 4 to 15 years, in the blaze that apparently was the result of a drug deal gone bad, Detective Sgt.

Pat Bartel said on June 4.

Coleman is being held on $1 million bond. The fire killed two young girls and a woman.

In Whiteside County, Coleman has several convictions across the last 2 decades, including criminal damage to property in 2017, possession of cocaine with intent to deliver in 2007 with a 2-year prison sentence, robbery in 2004 with a 5 1/2-year sentence, aggravated battery and damaging property in 2002 with a 2 1/2-year sentence, theft and felony possession and use of a firearm in 1999 with a 3-year sentence, possession of a controlled substance in 1998, and residential burglary in

1997 with a 4-year sentence, among others.

In Lee County, he was sentenced to 4 years after stealing 923 pounds of cut copper and two internally cooled welding wheels, worth $10,000 to $100,000, from SGS Refrigeration in 2016.

He was also sentenced to 3 years after being convicted of an aggravated DUI from 2017.

In Carroll County in 2009, Coleman was sentenced to two 10-year terms for dealing cocaine, 6 years for possession of marijuana, and a year for aggravated DUI, all concurrent.

$10,000 worth of equipment taken in May 31 break in

BY CODY CUTTER ccutter@shawmedia.com MORRISON – Police say two Iowa women stole thousands of dollars in tack from a horse therapy group that helps people with disabilities.

Krista P. Godat, 45, of Clinton, was arrested Thursday and Jolene L. Decker, 55, of Camanche, was arrested Friday by Morrison police.

Godat is charged with burglary, which carries 3 to 7 years in prison, and theft, which carries 2 to 5 years. In a separate but related case, she also is charged with possession of less than 5 grams of meth, also punishable by 2 to 5 years.

She is being held on $75,000 bond and has a preliminary hearing June 15.

Decker, whose case was not yet available in online records Friday, preliminarily was charged with two counts of burglary and one of theft. She is free on a recognizance bond, jail records show.

The two are accused of stealing $10,000 in tack from the nonprofit White Oaks Therapeutic Equestrian Center’s barn at the Whiteside County fairgrounds in Morrison sometime after 6 p.m.

Before the arrests, a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to replace the equipment raised more than $11,000 by the time it was closed Saturday.

The investigation is ongoing and more charges may be filed.

“We have worked very hard over several years to acquire nice equipment for the riders in our program, whether it be working to find item donors or fundraising and grant writing to be able to buy new, and with everything that is now gone, I am heartbroken to announce that our ability to operate remains uncertain at this time,” according to the statement from White Oaks.

Items taken include 10 Circle Y flex tree western saddles with safety stirrups, five new western saddle pads, several western girths, cordless Wahl clippers, several sets of reins, and two 3-tier saddle racks.

The center was scheduled to start its summer program June 16.

Freeport church recognizes COVID-19 deaths Local church uses small flags to mark each pandemic death FREEPORT – St. John United Church of Christ, 1010 South Park Blvd., will give recognition to all Illinois residents who died as a result of the coronavirus.

Rev. Becky Hebert, retired UCC minister and member of the St. John UCC Mission & Outreach Leadership Team, was inspired by a display

at The Congregational Church UCC of Needham, Massachusetts, where a display of small flags was used to mark each death related to the Coronavirus pandemic in their state.

St. John United Church of Christ will follow that model, marking the COVID-19 related deaths in Illinois on the Park Boulevard church lawn.

The display began June 6 and will remain as witness until a future time when it is safe to gather as a community again to mourn.

Additional flags will be added as the number of deaths increase from the pandemic.

SAVANNA – The West Carroll Education Association announces that Alice Coates and Kassidy Holley are the recipients of the second annual WCEA scholarship.

The members of the West Carroll Education Association awarded these two $300 scholarships to students entering a career in education or a similar field.

Alice and Kassidy represent the West Carroll School District through their commitment to education and their community involvement.

After nearly 3 months, still no sign of Redell Searches have yet to turn up any trace of missing woman who disappeared March 17

It’s been nearly three months since the Milledgeville woman walked out of her life and disappeared.

For three days, law officers with a dog walked the banks and kayaked the waters of the Elkhorn Creek in Carroll and Whiteside counties. State police twice have flown over the wide area she’s known to walk. Her family has posted fliers everywhere and created a Facebook page for tips. A statewide Silver Alert was issued and her picture and information are in a national missing persons data base.

Nothing.

Redell last was seen March 17, two weeks after her 62nd birthday, on Main

Street in Milledgeville. In this village of about 1,000 people, she stands out. She is known to take long walks, sometimes walking as much as 20 miles.

She has problems Milledgeville resident with her memory, Susen Redell and she needs new glasses – she can’t read things up close anymore.

People know her. People look out for her.

Her whereabouts weigh heavy the mind of Milledgeville Police Chief Jim Haag. His thoughts on what might have happened to Susan change daily.

One day, he fears the worst. The next, “I think in the back of my mind

that she got a ride from someone and is completely out of the area,” he said.

Her mental health is precarious: She’s lucid one day, confused the next.

She has no money; her bank account has not been accessed since she left.

It’s possible she’s in a homeless shelter somewhere. Maybe someone is taking care of her. Maybe someday she’ll walk back home.

That’s what Haag is hoping “You would think with COVID-19 and everyone staying home that someone just walking around the streets would stick out,” Haag said.

He reached out to the state police for help finding Redell, and in addition to the flyovers, ISP investigators are re-interviewing people and have come up with some new contacts from her past, the chief said.

He’s at a loss what to do next.

“It’s really getting down to being a waiting game,” Haag said.

Redell is white, 5-foot-3 and 120 pounds. She has dark brown hair, probably gray by know, and brown eyes. She was wearing a long black leather trench coat, an Aztec-themed poncho, jeans and black calf-length moccasin-style boots.

She has a silver flip phone and loves peppermint candies. She has glasses, but her vision is poor because she needs a new prescription.

She may try to convince you that she doesn’t want to be found, her son, Scott Howard, warns. She needs to be.

Patriotic music played in the background as each veteran held a votive candle while a poem was read in memory of veterans who gave their lives to protect this country.

After the poem was read the can-

dle was placed around the heart to complete it. There were many memories, goosebumps and a few tears shed during this service.

This tribute, private due to the Coronavirus and had only our veterans and a few staff present, made it all the more meaningful for those present.

FUNDS AWARDED

Carroll County awarded supplemental federal funds STAFF REPORT Carroll County has been awarded federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.

The monies awarded to Carroll County are used to supplement existing services that provide emergency food and shelter services in Carroll County.

The county will receive $3,118 for Phase 37 and $22,423 for Phase CARES Supplemental.

The selection was made by a national board, which is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The local board, which is composed of representatives from Carroll County, is now charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in highneed areas in local communities.

They are seeking applications from qualified service organizations serving Carroll County.

Areas that are eligible to receive funds include served meals, other food, mass shelter on-site, other shelter, supplies-equipment, and building code repairs-accessibility improvements.

The requirements to receive funds are to be a nonprofit, faith-based, and governmental organization that provides food, shelter, and supportive services within the intent of the program.

Body cam footage captures rescue of 12-year-old

BY CODY CUTTER ccutter@shawmedia.com STERLING – A child hospitalized after a deadly apartment fire last week was released from OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

The 12-year-old Sterling girl and her mother were taken to OSF as a result of the fire at Western Apartments, 908 W. Third St., that killed three people.

Police body camera footage of her rescue from the deadly fire was provided to Shaw Media on June 3.

The camera was attached to officer Ethan Riley of the Rock Falls Police Department.

Darkness grew in the building as the fire broke out around 12:30 a.m. on June 1..

When Riley arrived, he rushed to help Whiteside County sheriff’s deputy George Depuy reach the second-floor window of the southwestern suite. The officers climbed on the top of a Sterling Police Department SUV to get to the window.

Depuy reached the window, nearly dangling while Riley held on to him.

“Walk toward the light,” Depuy yelled. “Come on! Come to me!”

“I can hear them,” Depuy said to officers on the ground.

Riley then went up on the roof of the SUV. “I can’t see ...,” Riley said to Depuy before yelling inside, “Over here!

Come here! Come here!”

The voice of a child could be faintly heard. The words were not said clear enough to be deciphered by the camera’s audio.

“You’re not, you’re not! Just come over here, buddy! Come here!” the officers called out.

After some more cries for the child to come closer, she became more visible to Riley. Depuy and Sterling officer Mark Mendoza joined Riley at the window, rotating themselves at the ledge because of the intense heat.

As an orange glow started to brighten in the room, the child, with a blanket over her head, came within reach of Mendoza, who put his hands around her hips and lifted her through the window.

She was lowered down to other officers, who tended to her before medics arrived.

Flames reached the room 30 seconds later.

Riley fought off deep coughs while pacing on the nearby grass.

This program can help pay a portion of an eligible household’s utility bill.

Eligibility is mainly based on household size and income.

Anyone facing difficulty in paying their utility bill and has not applied yet is encouraged to contact Tri-County Opportunities Council as soon as possible.

If a household has already received a LIHEAP benefit since Oct. 1, 2019, they still might be eligible for additional benefit through reconnection assistance.

LIHEAP applications will be taken through June 30, 2020 or until funds are exhausted.

The gross income for the 30 days prior to the application date cannot exceed the following: 1 person household, $1,1561; 2 person household, $2,114; 3 person household, $2,666; 4 person household, $3,219; 5 person household, $3,771; 6 person household, $4,324.

Documents needed at the time of application are: proof of income for all household members for the previous 30 days including the day of application, proof of Social Security numbers for all members of the household, a copy of current heat and electric bills issued within the last 30 days (if energy directly paid for), a copy of rental agreement (if renting) showing that utilities are included, the monthly rental amount and landlord contact information and, proof the household received TANF or other benefits, such as Medical Eligibility or SNAP, if receiving assistance from the Illinois Department of Human Services.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tri-County Opportunities Council offices are no longer able to do in-person appointments for LIHEAP but mailed, phone and faxed applications are being accepted.

Residents should call 800-323-5434 to secure an application.

Tri-County Opportunities Council also has other types of assistance available, such as food, rent assistance, etc.
