South Dakota inmate dies at Thomson prison His death is the third fatality this year at the federal prison

BY TIMOTHY EGGERT teggert@shawmedia.com THOMSON – A 49-year-old Thomson prison inmate from South Dakota died Dec. 3 after being found unresponsive by staff, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said Dec. 4, marking the second inmate fatality reported in the last week and the third inmate death this year at the

high-security facility.

Boyd Weekley, who had been in Thomson custody since Feb. 25, was found unresponsive Dec. 3 at 2:30 p.m., according to a BOP news release.

After life-saving measures were performed by responding prison staff and emergency medical services staff, Weekley was transported to a local hospital and was subsequently pronounced dead by hospital staff, the release said.

No staff or other inmates were injured, and at no time was the public in danger, the release said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been notified of Weekley’s death.

According to the BOP, Weekley was serving a life sentence for a Western District of Michigan conviction of kidnapping and transportation of a minor in interstate commerce with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.

A BOP spokesman said Weekley’s death is not related to COVID-19, but declined to share more information.

As of last Friday, USP Thomson was reporting 54 active COVID-19 cases among inmates and 10 active COVID-19 cases among staff.

The announcement of his death comes one week after the agency reported the Nov. 27 death of 37-yearold inmate Edsel Aaron Badoni, who died after an altercation with anoth-

er inmate.

The other inmate, who has not been identified, was treated at the prison for unspecified injuries, the BOP has said.

Weekley’s death is the third this year at USP Thomson, which houses 1,365 male inmates.

The first inmate death was reported after staff found 31-year-old Matthew Phillips unresponsive due to life-threatening injuries.

He was found on the morning of March 2.

He was transported to a local hospital, and was pronounced dead three days later.

Two more COVID-related deaths, 30 new cases

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@sshawmedia..com The Whiteside County Health Department announced two COVID-related deaths on Sunday of people in their 80s and 90s.

The county also had 30 new cases of COVID-19 involving four people younger than 20, three in their 20s, two in their 30s, four in their 40s, 11 in their 50s, three in their 60s and three in their 70s.

Lee, Ogle and Carroll counties did not report updated statistics Sunday.

Whiteside County has had 4,154 cases and 99 deaths. Lee County has had 2,003 cases, 1,153 recoveries and 31 deaths. Ogle County has had 3,066 cases, 2,373 recoveries and 42 deaths. Carroll County has had 1,128 cases, 1,028 recoveries and 27 deaths.

The North region (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties) has seen zero consecutive days under the 12% threshold to return to Tier 2 mitigations.

The region’s positivity rate decreased to 14.7%. Currently, 27.1% of medical/surgical beds are available and 21.8% of ICU beds.

The region has 11 consecutive days above the 20% threshold for ICU bed availability, and 11 consecutive days above the 20% threshold for medical/surgical bed availability.

Region 1 has a rolling, 7-day average of 240 COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

Hospitalizations have decreased 10 out of the past 10 days in this region.

Finally, within this region, there are 36 available, staffed ICU beds out of 179 total.

The Illinois Department of Public Health on Sunday announced 7,598

cases and 76 deaths. Illinois has had 757,573 cases and 13,255 deaths.

Sterling has had 11,787 tests and 1,531 cases. Rock Falls has had 5,833 tests and 908 cases. Dixon has had 14,83 tests and 1,461 cases. Rochelle has had 6,956 tests and 1,036 cases.

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@shawmedia.com STERLING -- Nearly nine decades have passed since “the date which will live in infamy,” but Sterling American Legion Post 296 made sure the memory lives on.

In a Sunday morning ceremony, Legion and community members came out to recognize Monday’s 89th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Post 296 Cmdr. Jim Gordon said it was important to recognize the anniversary, “to never, ever, ever forget what happened. It’s a legacy. I hope it never dies. I hope future generations will remember this forever.”

It was Sunday morning, Dec. 7, 1941, that forces of the Japanese Imperial Navy launched a surprise attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl

Harbor, Hawaii, killing 2,335 Americans and launching the United States into World War II. Sunday’s ceremony included an 18-gun salute from the American Legion Honor Guard, a bugler playing taps and a benediction, as well as a ceremonial folding of an American flag that has flown over the U.S. Capitol and the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.

Not even a pandemic was going to keep the Legion from honoring those who were lost. Attendees wore face masks and practiced social distancing.

“Everything else is basically the same,” Gordon said. “With all our funerals, and everything the Honor Guard does, we stay socially distanced as much as we can ... COVID didn’t really stop us from anything today.”

Station helps Walnut boy have a Merry Christmas

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@shawmedia.com STERLING – Customers at the East End Shell Station at 2404 E. Lincolnway dug a little deeper into their pockets last Friday afternoon, and for good reason.

It was about helping Caleb Clausen have a Merry Christmas.

Clausen, son of Ben and Annie Clausen of Walnut, was struck by a semi on Sept. 19, 2017 and sustained life-threatening injuries. Now 9, Caleb still is on the mend. His progress can be monitored by following Prayers For Caleb on Facebook.

Sheila Bittner, manager at the Shell station for the past 11 years, learned of the accident the day after it happened via social media and sprung into action.

“I saw it on Facebook,” Bittner said. “We waited a little while, then I figured it was something we needed to do for this family for Christmas.

We got their Christmas for them for the year 2017 and decided to do it every year after.”

For more than 3 years, a bucket has been on the counter at the Shell station, allowing people to leave their change or some folding money that’s passed on to the Clausen family each Sept. 19, the anniversary of the accident.

Last Friday, another fundraiser was held.

Shell employee Ashley Tate, her daughter Kylie, and nephew Easton Rus set up camp outside the store, then inside when it got too cold, from 2 to 6 p.m. to ask customers for donations.

Miranda Johnson, Ashley’s sister, was dressed in a snowman costume near Lincolnway to draw customers in.

Those who donated received a free drink courtesy of Shell. The goal was to be able to purchase a $500 gift card from Walmart, as well as make a cash donation to the Clausen family. It is the fourth year Bittner has undertaken this project, she said.

“Through the generosity of my customers, we make it every year.”

OBITUARIES SUZANNE P. BERG THOMSON — Suzanne P. Berg, 66, of Thomson, passed away Tuesday, December 1, 2020 after a long battle with cancer.

A celebration of Suzie’s life will be held on a later date.

Suzie was born Dec. 11, 1953, in Savanna, the daughter of Philip and Maxine (Gamble) Hottenstein.

She attended Savanna schools, graduating from Savanna High School.

On Feb. 18, 1973, Suzie married Jeff “Moose” Berg. She spent time working for Mercy Hospital, and most recently, Sarah Harding Senior Living Center, in Clinton, Iowa.

Suzie was a fun-loving, kind soul, who spent her days boating, motorcycling, and going out to eat with her dear husband, Moose.

She and Moose loved their trips to Wisconsin where they would visit state parks, rent cabins, and visit Zoos where Suzie could marvel at her animal

friends. She loved her pets dearly, especially JBJ, Phylisha, Kara, and Sophie.

Suzie will be dearly missed by her husband, Moose; sisters, Joyce (Greg) Eversoll, of Savanna, Cindy (Frank) Norman, of Savanna, and Kay Anderson, of Savanna; brother, Philip G. (Brenda) Hottenstein; stepmother, Bettie Cottonstein; and many nieces and nephews.

Suzie is preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

MORRISON — As the economy has become increasingly global, it has become steadily more difficult to find products made in the United States.

Morrison Tech has decided to make finding hand-crafted products easier by introducing Made at Morrison Tech.

Consumers are not wishing to purchase products that have been mass produced, but rather they are seeking more personal, uncommon, and handmade items. Shoppers can find these kinds of pieces at the Morrison Tech campus.

The college has a long history of Made at Morrison Tech - much of

the campus has been constructed by students and staff over the years.

MT graduates’ fingerprints can be found on most major civil engineering projects all over this nation, and many products that are being manufactured in the United States.

The recent addition of the Innovation Center, which opened in the Spring of 2019, has allowed Morrison Tech an even bigger opportunity to continue this long tradition of Made at Morrison Tech.

For the first time, the public is invited to own a little piece of Morrison Tech and some of the wonderful ideas that have been designed and built here on the campus. As we

enter the Christmas season, many of these products would make for a wonderful gift.

Each creation began with a concept that generated a design utilizing CAD software. This design was then prototyped out using 3D printers and/or CNC machinery. The last step is to bring this design into reality.

Visitors will find several unique pieces that are Made at Morrison Tech throughout campus at 701 Portland Ave. in Morrison. These displays of art are the products of staff and student visions.

All items may be purchased from the Morrison Tech Marketplace,

with all proceeds to assist students in their educational experiences at Morrison Tech.

Christmas tree now lit in downtown

BY LYNETTE FORTH For the Prairie Advocate The City of Mount Carroll held a tree lighting ceremony in the courthouse square on Dec. 4.

Participants wore 3D glasses to enjoy a special show. Santa made an appearance via firetruck through town.

Masks were worn and social distancing precautions took place.

Visitors also got a first time showing of the large Christmas Village owned

by Joanie and Wayne Brooks. The display is located in the Kraft Building and can only be viewed through the large window.

The Chamber of Commerce also hosted a Tour of Lights, with contestants vying for prizes in five categories The tour runs through the Christmas season, with a digital map of all participating homes and businesses posted on the Chamber Facebook page.

Man pleads guilty to hiring hit man to kill ex-wife

BY TIMOTHY EGGERT teggert@shawmedia.com DIXON – The father of the teen accused of opening fire with a rifle inside Dixon High School pleaded guilty to and was sentenced Dec. 3 for trying to coordinate a scheme aimed at killing his now ex-wife.

Matthew A. Milby Sr., 50, pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to solicit murder for hire after making inquiries in July 2019 about recruiting and paying a hit man $5,000 and a motorcycle to kill his then-wife, Julie Milby.

Their divorce was finalized earlier this year, according to court records.

Both are the parents to Matthew A. Milby Jr., now 21, who investigators say in May 2018 walked into Dixon High School with a 9mm semi-automatic rifle, fired at a gym teacher he encountered in a hallway, fled, and was thwarted by the school resource officer who stopped him with shots to the shoulder and hip.

Milby Jr. has yet to be tried on two counts of attempted murder and four counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

His fitness to stand trial was reaffirmed last month, the first time that determination has been made consecutively in the 2-year-old case.

Milby Sr. was initially indicted on two felony counts of solicitation of murder for hire in February, after police in July 2019 investigated claims that Milby Sr. was seeking to recruit someone to

murder two people.

At the time, Milby Sr. was in custody of the Lee County Jail on twelve other felony charges, including trafficking, dealing and possessing methamphetamine, and resisting an officer, that stemmed from cases launched in 2018 and Matthew A. Milby Sr. 2019.

According to prosecutors, police were contacted by a source that Milby Sr. from the jail contacted and questioned the source on whether he knew of someone that would accept $5,000 and a motorcycle to kill Julie.

Investigators coordinated with the source, allowing them to “capture several conversations” between him and Milby Sr. about a plan to potentially hire someone to commit the murder, prosecutors said in court Thursday.

Appearing in a yellow surgical mask and wearing rubber gloves, similar to the personal protection equipment donned by his son during his own in-person court proceedings held amid the coronavirus pandemic, Milby Sr. agreed that those were the facts of the case.

He also agreed that he delivered 5 to 15 grams of methamphetamine on Dec. 30 in 2018, entering a guilty plea in the 2018 case, which featured a range of other felony drug and resistance charges.

In exchange for his pleas Thursday, Milby Sr. received a 6-year sentence for the attempted solicitation conviction and a 4-year sentence for the meth delivery conviction.

He will serve both sentences concurrently in state prison, and will be subject to 2 years of mandatory supervised release. The 566 days he has spent in Lee County Jail will be applied against the sentences.

His plea agreement also dissolves the remaining dozen charges, and stipulates that he has a substance abuse problem, which he will receive treatment for in prison.

Milby Sr. has three convictions for possession of a controlled substance in cases dating from 1994 to 2003, and a 2006 felony conviction for using a theft detection remover in a retail theft case, all in Lee County.

He also has a 2001 burglary conviction in Whiteside County.

Rock Falls-based attorney Allison Fagerman, who represents Julie Milby, said her client has “strenuous objections” to her ex-husband’s plea agreement. “[Julie] believes the proposal is unfair,” Fagerman said. “Mr. Milby is still a serious threat to himself, to her and to society.”

“He has a psychotic disorder that cannot be cured by medicine or therapy,” Fagerman said.

“This court should not ignore that he made a substantial step to have his now ex-wife killed.”

Books: Gifts That Keep on Giving A Book Buying Recommendation Guide for Parents and Grandparents

As a parent and a teacher, my life is consumed by books. Lucky for me, most of my time is spent reading children’s books, which are my absolute favorite pieces of literature. I am always on the lookout for new and exciting books to recommend to others to read or to gift. I also enjoy picking out books to read aloud to my students and children.

Sharing books with children is one of the greatest gifts one could ever give. Whether it is a book the child will be reading independently or one that someone will

be reading to them, gifting a book to child is helping to encourage and develop reading skills they will use for a lifetime.

When shopping for the littlest readers, think about books that are well constructed, brightly colored, and interactive. Flaps, pulls, pop-ups tend to keep a child wanting to read the book over and over again. Eric Hill and Karen Katz both offer wonderful flap books for children at this age. Consider picking out books that highlight colors, shapes, letters, and numbers. Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell and books like Press Here and Mix it Up

Early school aged children love to laugh and be entertained by books. If you want an author that does this exceptionally well, look for books by Mo Willems.

He writes the Elephant and Piggie series, as well as the Pigeon books. Beginning readers who rely on pictures and rhyming to help them read will love the Old Lady books by Lucille Colandro. She has a book for nearly every holiday and topic. Do you want to help your little

reader feel and sound like a real brainiac? The Fancy Nancy series by Jane O’Connor does just that with so much whimsy.

Children who have moved from learning to read to reading to learn are typically ready to enter the world of chapter books. Luckily for them, there is an abundance of great series written for this age group. For those readers who love non-fiction books, the Who Would Win series by Jerry Pallotta would be a great fit.

It highlights various animals and debates the question “who would win?” in an epic battle.

Students who appreciate non-fiction, but prefer fiction books, will love the ever expanding I Survived series by Lauren Tarshis. This is well loved by both boys and girls of this age group. It transports the reader to variety of different historical events and explains how the lead character makes it out alive. A few of the I Survived titles have been turned into graphic novels for readers who enjoy this genre.

If you are looking for graphic novels, the popular series from the 90’s, The Babysitter’s Club, has been revamped and redone for today’s readers. Raina Telgemeier has transformed the first eight titles in the original series into graphic novels.

National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count Dec. 15 APPLE RIVER — The Eagle Nature Foundation and the Jo Daviess County Conservation Foundation will be sponsoring this year’s National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

This one day count is designed to count all the birds that can be seen in a 15 mile diameter circle, that is centered at Schapville.

“At least six or more teams will be driving around within this circle counting the birds during this day. Many times these cars will stop to get an accurate identification or count of the birds that are seen.

Normally in the past as many as 42 different species of birds have been tallied with 3-5,000 individual birds counted,” said Terrence N. Ingram, President and Executive Director of the Eagle Nature Foundation.

The Jo Daviess County Count was originally started in 1966 with

Ingram and Dale Carlson working as one team in one car for a period of nine hours counting 1,374 birds of 18 species.

Last year 25 individuals in six teams, plus some individuals counting birds at their backyard bird feeders, counted 2,325 birds of 39 species in 25.25 hours.

Ingram has been the compiler for this count every year since 1966.

“During normal years volunteers are asked to ride in the cars as bird spotters. However this year with the threat of COVID-19, we cannot ask volunteers to ride for hours in a car with others, even wearing masks,” Ingram said.

“However, anyone living within 7.5 miles of Schapville, can count the birds at their feeders or near them and send the results to me so they can be included in the total.”

Virus surge inside prison results in inmate deaths

BY TIMOTHY EGGERT teggert@shawmedia.com DIXON – A surge of the coronavirus that gripped inmates and staff inside the Dixon Correctional Center last month resulted in the death of six inmates, according to authorities.

The sixth death, a man in his 60s, was Nov. 23, according to Lindsey Hess, public information officer for the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Sauk Valley Media first reported the initial inmate death to COVID19, a man in his 70s, was Nov. 6.

The remaining four inmate deaths — two men in their 50s, one man in his 60’s and one man in his 70s — all occurred between Nov. 18 and Nov. 22.

All six men died at hospitals outside of the medium-security prison, located at 2600 N. Brinton Ave. There have been 46 inmate deaths from COVID-19 at Illinois prisons, according to Hess.

No DCC staff have died from the virus, but a contractual employee at the Vienna Correctional Center has died from complications caused by the virus, Hess said.

The six deaths from COVID-19 comes after a wave of new cases last month swept through the facility, one of 36 state prisons that have reported outbreaks of the virus.

The Dixon Correctional Center has seen six inmates die from COVID-19.

According to data posted on the IDOC website and tracked by Sauk Valley Media, the number of total COVID-19 cases among inmates exploded from 55 confirmed cases on Oct. 25 to 455 confirmed cases on Nov. 30.

That same 36-day stretch saw 142 new confirmed cases among DCC staff.

The outbreak appears to have

peaked on Nov. 10, when there were 192 active coronavirus cases among inmates and 55 active coronavirus cases among DCC staff.

As of Friday, there are 19 active cases among DCC staff and 74 active cases among inmates.

Since the first DCC staff tested positive for the virus on May 24, and the first inmates tested positive for the virus on Aug. 30, a combined 674

confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported.

That total places DCC in the top spot among the 36 IDOC facilities for number of combined confirmed cases reported since the beginning of the pandemic.

Gov. JB Pritzker on Friday said that the reduction in the number of individuals incarcerated in state prisons and people detained in county jails has contributed to an easing of the spread of the virus in all incarceral environments.

“Prison population is down, the jail population has actually come down significantly over the last couple of months as we have transferred more inmates, potential inmates, to prison,” Pritzker said. “Overall the population has come down, and that has helped to manage COVID-19 better.”

But the slowing spread of the virus inside DCC likely has to do with the fact that a significant number of inmates and staff have tested positive for the virus, according to Lee County Health Department Administrator Cathy Ferguson-Allen.

“But it’s also clear that just like outside the prison, in the community, those in a congregate facility who are most vulnerable to the virus can be the most susceptible to it,” Ferguson-Allen said. “And that’s the same with these inmate deaths.”

Area counties on list to get COVID-19 vaccine

BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@shawmedia.com Whiteside, Ogle and Carroll counties will be among the first to receive COVID-19 vaccine shipments in the coming weeks.

Gov. JB Pritzker said Friday that the very first vaccinations will go to the 50 counties with the highest death rates per capita. On that list, Carroll County ranked third, Whiteside ranked 11th and Ogle ranked 46th.

Both the Pfizer vaccine and the Moderna vaccine require two doses. Pfizer’s is three weeks apart, while Moderna’s is four weeks apart. The doses for the first and second shot are the same.

The state expects to receive 109,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine from a federal supply, with 23,000 expected to go to Chicago and 86,000 set to go across the rest of the state.

The first vaccines are set to go to health care workers, hospital teams, first responders and long-term care residents. They will be restricted to those 18 and older.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is scheduled to consider approval of the Pfizer vaccine for emergency use on Dec. 10 followed by Moderna on Dec. 17.

No animals lost during fire at Lyndon hog farm Second time in 3 years a fire has hit this pork producer

BY TIMOTHY EGGERT teggert@shawmedia.com LYNDON – No injuries to humans or to livestock were reported in a Dec. 1 fire on a farm in rural Whiteside County.

Fire crews responded to 19170 Rush Road just after noon last Tuesday, arriving to find flames across the front and smoke billowing from the roof of a 21,600-square-foot hog confinement building on the north side of the 79-acre farm.

Crews had the scene under control within an hour, and a majority of the flames were extinguished in less than an hour and a half.

Just after 1:35 p.m., firefighters still were soaking the smoldering structure, and were waiting for a state fire marshal to arrive.

The confinement, which can hold

up to 5,000 head of hogs, was empty when the fire started, Morrison Fire Department Chief Joe Bielema said.

The fire’s cause wasn’t immediately known, Bielema said, but it appeared to have started on the building’s front, or east end, and crawled west, toward the back of the building.

Fully engulfed by flames, the burning building produced a streaming column of thick black and gray smoke that could be spotted as far as Sterling.

It likely will be declared a total loss.

The building’s metal roof had just been replaced after it sustained damage from high-strength winds during intense storms that moved across the area last month, Bielema said.

The farm, owned by Mark and Sheryl VonHolten, was subject to another destructive fire in October 2017, when another hog confinement building on the farm’s east side was struck by lightning and about 3,000 hogs died.

That fire was confined to the middle of three buildings, and took about 6 hours to contain.
