A combine makes the first pass through Norm Koster’s sunflower field along Polo Road in Sterling on Thursday afternoon. The sunflowers drew hundreds of onlookers searching for a bright spot during a turbulent year. Koster planted a 120-acre field of sunflowers this summer on Polo Road, near the Mobil gas station, attracting so many people from near and far that the Sterling Police Department had to post no parking signs in that area to help ease traffic congestion.

COVID-19 UPDATE

Whiteside cases climb to 3,626 with 69 deaths The Whiteside County Health Department announced 53 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday; they involve four people younger than 20, nine in their 20s, nine in their 30s, 10 in their 40s, 13 in their 50s, four in their 60s, three in their 70s and one older than 80.

Lee, Ogle and Carroll counties did not report statistics on Sunday.

Whiteside County has had 3,626 cases and 69 deaths. Lee County has had 1,486 cases, 906 recoveries and six deaths. Ogle County has had

2,456 cases, 1836 recoveries and 24 deaths.

Carroll County has had 956 cases, 797 recoveries and 23 deaths.

The North region (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties) has seen 3 days of positivity increases and 5 days of

hospital admission increases, a decrease in both metrics.

The region’s positivity rate decreased from 18.2% to 17.1%.

Currently, 26% of medical/surgical beds are available and 23% of ICU beds.

Within this region, DeKalb County’s positivity rate decreased to

13.8%, Lee County’s rate decreased to 16.6%, and Whiteside County’s rate dropped to 20.6%.

Finally, within this region, there are 48 available, staffed ICU beds out of 179 total.

Illinois announced 10,012 new cases and 76 deaths. The state has had 656,298 cases and 11,506 deaths.

Sterling has had 10,422 tests and 1,321 cases. Rock Falls has had 5,201 tests and 780 cases. Dixon has had 11,572 tests and 1,067 cases. Rochelle has had 6,277 tests and 896 cases.

Officials warn of potential exposure at Whiskey Barrel in Rock Falls ROCK FALLS – The Whiteside County Health Department is warning of a potential COVID-19 exposure Nov. 14 at the Whiskey Barrel Saloon.

An asymptomatic person who was there from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. that day later tested positive for the coronavirus.

With cases on the rise throughout the area, the health department is warning people that “every interaction carries risk” and is encouraging everyone to wear a mask, keep social distancing, stay home when sick, limit close contacts and follow the state’s mitigation guidelines.

“Public releases typically do not need to be issued if individuals and businesses have followed CDC, IDPH, DCEO and local health department guidelines and know their close contacts,” the department’s Cory Law said in the release

announcing the potential exposure.

“Unfortunately, a number of individuals are not doing what they can to protect our community,” Law said.

“Instead, they have chosen to disregard recommendations around masking, social distancing, staying home when sick, as well as Phase 4 Guidelines and Tier 3 Resurgence Mitigation, and shown an unwillingness to work with the Health Department after testing positive or being exposed.

“As a result ... exposures and new cases continue to strain our local businesses, schools, first responders, EMS systems, long-term care facilities and hospitals ... as they work to prepare for influenza season, all while dealing with staffing shortages due to employees becoming ill or having to quarantine after an exposure.”

OBITUARIES JOSEPH W. HAMMER SR. SHANNON – Joseph W. Hammer Sr. 60, of Shannon, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Thursday, November 19, 2020.

He was born March 29, 1960 in Oak Park to William and Marilyn (Lanphier) Hammer.

He graduated from Glenbard East High School in Lombard in 1978.

He spent most of his life working and running the family business, Process Screw Products.

He loved traveling and spending time with family, summers at the river on his houseboat, and midnight runs to McDonalds with the kids and grandkids.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and shooting. He loved coaching his children in baseball and softball for 20 years and volunteering and helping out in the community.

He was an active and very grateful member of Alcoholics Anonymous with over 41 years of sobriety, only achieved by sharing his story and helping numerous others, valuing all of the friendships he made along the way.

He is survived by his wife, Mary “Kristi” Rieger, of nearly 40 years, who he married on Dec. 6, 1980.

They had five sons and three daughters, Joseph W. Jr. (Teresa), Leslie (Tim) Wenzel, Mitchell (Charity), Jami, BilliJo (Kenny) Myers, Walker, Wyatt, and Jack; nine grandchildren, Kaylee, Abbey, and Brayden Hammer, Mitchell Jr., Mathew,

EDWARD W. HARING SHANNON – Edward W. Haring, age 82, of Shannon, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at University of Wisconsin Hospital, in Madison, Wisconsin.

Ed was born May 19, 1938, in Derinda Township, the son of Wilbert and Caroline (Stricker) Haring.

Ed attended Derinda Country School, then went to work farming in the area, eventually making his way to Woessner Farms.

He contributed more than 40 years of hard work on that farm, before his retirement.

In 1960, Ed married Elsie Thulen. The

The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Marine Toys for Tots. An IRS recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charity, it serves as the authorized fundraising and support organization for the Toys for Tots Program.

The Foundation provides the leadership, funding, and support needed for successful annual toy collection and distribution campaigns.

The Foundation staff is headquartered in the Cooper Center located just outside the Main Gate of Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Virginia, about 35 miles south of Washington, DC. Local campaigns are conducted annually in over 800 communities covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

Fundraising drive for a new dog park begins Bark Park planned at former Legion baseball diamond

BY SARAH FORD For Shaw Media MORRISON — Fido, Fluffy, and Spot will have a new place to play in Morrison if area residents and businesses help fund a planned dog park.

The “On The Move with Parks and Recreation” Committee of Morrison has launched its fundraising effort to bring “Bark Park” to the city.

The committee was formed from a Mapping group that began last year through the Illinois Institute of Rural Affairs program, which helps communities create longrange visions and plans of action for achieving them through strategic vision and planning.

The committee’s goal is to provide and enhance recreational opportunities within the community for persons of all ages.

Donations are now being accepted create the park in three phases.

One of the needs the team identified was a dog park, said committee member Kathy Schmidt.

She said there used to be a dog park at the Waterworks Park, but it was by the creek which constantly flooded.

With a new location and vision in mind, the On the Move committee brought their plans to the city council, which approved their ideas

and dedicated a new location on the north side of town for the project.

The Morrison Bark Park will be at the former Legion baseball diamond on Genesee St., just north of Northside Elementary School.

Schmidt said the committee has been working on the project for over a year, first determining what they wanted and how to get there.

The fundraising process started in

April but had to stop due to COVID19. The committee regrouped in September and decided to finally launch the fundraising phase.

“It’s going to take people’s support, time and effort. We’re looking for people to help, donate, and be a part of this project,” said Schmidt.

“We have lots of people with dogs in our town, and we’re hoping they also join in.”

The project vision includes a walking path, with opportunities to purchase bricks in memory of pets.

She said any community support will be appreciated as the project gets off the ground.

The project will be implemented in phases: Phase 1 will be fencing, Phase 2 will be a walking path, and Phase 3 is a parking lot, water station, benches, a fountain, and aesthetics.

The goal for Phase 1 is to raise $50,000, which is the estimate to purchase and install a fence around the Bark Park.

I was recently asked about some questions regarding the new COVID vaccines, and it prompted some interesting exploration of conspiracy theories that are circulating recently.

The questions, and answers: What about the claims of luciferase and patent 060606? Claims that it changes your DNA? Are these legitimate concerns or scare tactics?

These are interesting examples of where conspiracy theories come from, and how they come together.

Fundamentally, conspiracy theories take some fact or grain of truth that sounds scary and make unsubstantiated connections to spin a sensational tale that drives clicks, which is how money and notoriety is gained on the internet these days.

Let’s start with luciferase.

Lucifer is Greek for “light-bringer,” and you might recognize the root in luminescence or translucent. It is, of course, also the name of God’s “brightest” angel, before the fall.

Bioluminescence, like that in fireflies, is brought about by an enzyme called luciferase, which translates into “light-bringing enzyme.”

How does this connect to vaccines?

Bill Gates suggested that an invisible ink tattoo incorporated into the vaccine delivery system be used that would be visible – luminescence – when exposed to a certain wavelength of light. They are tiny, and sometimes referred to as “quantum dots” (also slightly scary-sounding).

A worker could use a device incorporated into a cellphone to see whether a person had gotten the vaccine.

Helpful, and an easy way to solve the issue of who was vaccinated in an area where records aren’t kept.

The enzyme used in that technology is luciferase.

In the U.S. and most developed countries, there is no need or use for this, and luciferase isn’t used in current vaccines.

On to patent 060606, which actually is “WO2020060606A1.” There are three 6’s in there somewhere, right?

Good enough for a conspiracy.

This patent is for an insertable microchip system that rewards body activity with cryptocurrency. Microsoft Technology applied for the patent earlier this year.

It relates to technology in smart watches and phones; the application makes no mention of using “injectable chips” for any sort of internal monitoring or control. It has no relation to vaccines, except in the minds of conspiracy theorists.

Some vaccines, like those from Pfizer and Moderna that are proving effective against COVID-19, use lipid nanoparticles to encapsulate messenger RNA – genetic material that helps the body get a look at what the real virus is, without actually giving it the disease, and provides a blueprint for your own cells to make antibodies.

It’s important to note that only the “spike proteins” are made in this process, not the whole virus, or even

a killed virus – just the “spikes” that are critical for the virus to enter cells. This is what your body makes antibodies against. There is no chance to be “infected” by this, as it is only a small part of the surface of the virus.

Nanoparticles are not the same as microscopic “nanotechnology” robots injected via a needle. That stuff still is science fiction, and would be fabulously expensive if/ when it would become a reality, even for Bill Gates, in widespread use.

As far as “changing your DNA” and making you into a genetically modified organism, this claim is another tortuous misapplication of science. The normal process is that DNA is transcribed (read into) RNA, which your body uses to make things, not the other way around.

No DNA is involved in COVID vaccines, and they are and they will not make us into humans 2.0.

These vaccines are newer technology (which is faster and more easy to mass produce – progress!), that is true, and that’s why I would not be comfortable without standard large

Preliminary results show remarkable effectiveness, not only from being infected, but also from the bad effects and hospitalizations that follow – we know COVID has bad effects, both short- and long-term. After the safety trials are done, the remaining risk will be comfortably below the risk of COVID, and if these conspiracy theories scare people away from a safe and effective vaccine, the devil wins anyways - working mysteriously as always.

Remember the original conspiracy theory – the devil telling Eve that God did not want them eating the apple, or they would become like God? It is all too easy to introduce doubt.

She also has six nieces, two deceased nephews, 19 great-nieces and -nephews, 24 great-great-nieces and -nephews and 14 great-greatgreat-nieces and -nephews to keep track of. There is one more due on Monday, with two more sometime later this winter.

One great-great-great-nephew, 2-year-old Eli Crownhart of Amboy, visits each Sunday; it’s one of the highlights her week.

Come Dec. 2, Jacobs has no special plans. Maybe she’ll open a few birthday cards that come her way, or perhaps have a piece of cake.

“I’ll just keep this bed nice and warm,” Jacobs said with a smile.

“That’s all I’m good for now.”

Jacobs also volunteered at Messiah Lutheran Church, Christ Lutheran Church School, the Red Cross Bloodmobile, Salvation Army and the Fish Food Pantry.

STERLING – Flying solo has suited Dorothy Jacobs just fine for more than a century.

Jacobs will turn 104 years young on Dec. 2. When asked the secret to her longevity, she didn’t hesitate for a second.

“I suppose most people would say I never married,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs has no children, but many generations of youth in Sterling know her from being their teacher.

After graduation from Sterling Township High School in 1934, she got a teaching certificate from Northern Illinois University in 1936.

She then taught at Swan Lake Grade School (1937-43), Stone School (1944), East Science Ridge School (1945-48) and Lincoln Grade School (1949-78).

“I wanted to be a teacher probably since I was able to talk,” Jacobs said.

“I always wanted to be a teacher.”

Many of her former students either have called her or dropped by over the years, to keep her informed of what was going on in their lives.

She takes pride in their successes, but only up to a point.

“I don’t take any special credit,” Jacobs said. “I just enjoyed teaching them, and I hope they enjoyed me, being in my room.”

For her 100th birthday, Jacobs addressed a fourth grade class at Amboy Grade School, on the 100th day of school that year. She spoke about her young days on a farm with an outhouse, no running water, no telephone, no electricity and doing farm work with horses.

“They enjoyed that,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs noted her favorite activity growing up was softball, and is a fan of the Chicago Cubs. She wasn’t quite born yet when the Cubs won back-to-back World Series in 1907 and 1908 over the Detroit Tigers, but got a lot of joy out of the team’s title in 2016, in seven games over the Cleveland Indians.

“I liked that because I like the Cubs,” Jacobs said.

MOUNT CARROLL – The Timber Lake Playhouse cast of singers and musicians will present a virtual holiday experience.

teggert@shawmedia.com Although temperatures may remain near average, the Sauk Valley likely will experience a wetter-than-average winter season, according to the latest three-month weather outlook issued by climate officials.

From December to February, Carroll, Ogle, Lee and Whiteside counties all share a 40% chance of logging above-normal precipitation, but have the same “equal chance” of recording normal temperatures, based on the National Weather Service’s Central Region Climate Outlook.

Those predictions, according to the NWS report, are the result of a strengthening La Niña weather event, which has been ongoing since the beginning of the year.

Timothy Gunkel, a meteorologist with the NWS Office in the Quad Cities, said it’s hard to say how the current La Niña will compare to the one that ended in 2018 because it’s just starting, but in general, the weather events come with similar conditions.

La Niña conditions – cooler, wetter conditions in the north and warmer, drier conditions in the south – manifest when water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean cool.

NICAA Golden Meals program has expanded its services to include more home delivery routes in the Shannon area, for the town of Shannon and the rural areas surrounding it.

The home-delivery program is for any senior citizen aged 60 or over who would benefit from having a meal delivered to their home on a daily basis. Delivery will be available Monday through Friday.
