Council approves warning signs for streets

BY MICHAEL MILLER For the Prairie Advocate After some debate, the Savanna City Council decided Nov. 10 to move forward with the purchase of signage that will alert motorists to the presence of children playing in several city neighborhoods.

Savanna Mayor Chris Lain said a petition had been received from residents living on Superior, California, Michigan and Nevada streets. In the petition, hey requested the city post signage would caution motorists to slow down due to children playing in those areas.

Alderman Roger Husband said since a similar request had been recently approved, he felt that a request with an actual petition would “lend even more credence” to this request.

Alderman Deb Long said she thought approving this would “open a can of worms” whereby “every street that has little kids on it, their parents will want a sign.”

Alderman Sarah Purdom said this is a neighborhood with no sidewalks. “So there’s no place for kids to ride their bikes except the streets and as a person who lived there for 10 years, I can tell you that people do need to slow down,” she said.

Public Works Superintendent John Lindeman echoed Long’s sentiments. “Times are different, but I think we’re going to have a town full of signs before we are done with this,” he said.

Alderman Patrick Sanchez said he agreed with Long and felt parents should instruct their children to be safe while they played.

“Parents need to be out there watching their kids a little bit, too,” he said.

Lain said no ordinance was made for the previous sign request because such a sign would not be “an enforceable sign.”

City Attorney Phil Jensen explained that such a sign was “an encouragement sign with no penalty for non compliance.”

BRIEFS Changes at Lanark Public Library LANARK – There are changes at Lanark Municipal Building this month.

After discussions with local and county officials the decision has been made to close the Lanark Municipal building until further notice. The Lanark Public Library will continue to offer curbside service from noon to 5 p.m. each Tuesday and Friday by calling 815-493-2166.

Radon program offered FREEPORT – University of Illinois Extension will host “Radon: Why it is still an issue?” at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov 30, via Zoom on-line meeting platform.

Over the last few years, the magnitude of the radon issue in northern Illinois becomes more apparent as more homes are evaluated.

Professional radon testers have found over 55 percent of homes tested in Northwest Illinois at or above the recommended action level of 4 pCL. Over the past 10 years, many homes in the area have been tested with homeowner kits and by professional testers.

From there, the matter would flow to the full council after a recommendation from the committee.

Awarded a bid for housing demolition and restoration for 1143 Chicago Avenue to Colgan Excavating (the sole bidder) in the amount of $8,000. Colgan also was the sole bidder for 118 East Fifth Street, with the bid for that demolition and restoration coming in at 9,500.

The vote to accept these bids was unanimous, after a motion from Husband, seconded by Alderman Jeff Griswold.

The council also voted unanimously to cancel the second meeting in December, as is customary.

“The House Republican caucus will remain united in fighting for critical reforms to bring our state fiscal stability and rid it of the corruption it has been under for decades of Democrat control,” Durkin and McCombie said in a joint press release. “We share the same goals and will work together as a caucus to help the people of Illinois.”

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@shawmedia.com MORRISON – In the Nov. 3 general election, voters in Morrison overwhelmingly showed their support for a plan to allow the Morrison Community Hospital to lease office space outside of the district.

The plan passed with 72.78% support.

“We had put a lot of effort into notifying our community what it was all about,” hospital marketing director Mick Welding said. “I think

the main thing that people in our community wanted to be assured was that it was not going to raise taxes.”

About four months ago, the hospital brought on board Dr. Abdul Foad, who had an office in Davenport, Iowa. The hospital foundation has helped him pay for his rent at his Quad Cities office since then while waiting to see if voters would allow the hospital itself to pay the rent.

“The good thing about this

arrangement is that Dr. Foad is already seeing patients in the Quad Cities. He’s a known commodity down there,” Welding said. “The benefit to our hospital for this is that

he can see patients before they have surgery down there, then all of those patients will come here to Morrison for surgery, and then they’ll recover here after surgery and then he can see them in the Quad Cities for their post-op procedures.”

The passage of the proposition could also open the door to other Morrison Community Hospital doctors to share office space with Dr. Foad. The hospital could still look at expansion into other communities in the area.

Passage of referendum opens doors for hospital

OBITUARIES HELEN EVELYN KRAMER STERLING - Helen Evelyn (Hartman) Kramer, 95, left this world to enter Heaven on November 11, 2020 at CGH Medical Center after a six-day battle with COVID-19.

Helen was born on Dec. 19, 1924 to Henry and Anna (Traum) Hartman on a farm in rural Thomson. She was one of 17 children. She married Ralph W. Kramer in rural Savanna on June 11, 1950. He died on July 8, 1996.

She was a homemaker her entire life, and worked diligently in her garden and with her sewing crafts. She enjoyed attending church with her husband and children.

Survivors include her sons, Luther (Kathy Musser) Kramer and Russell (Sylvia Pierce)Kramer; four grandchildren, Hayley and Hayden Kramer, Ben-

jamin (Ali) Kramer and Amanda (Eric) Kaufman; two great-grandchildren, Joseph Kramer and Evelyn Kaufman; two sisters, Darlene Vos of Morrison and Luella Garrison of Sterling; and many nieces and nephews, whom she enjoyed visiting at the yearly reunions.

Visitation, followed by private family services, was Nov. 14, 2020. at the McDonald Funeral Home in Sterling.

Burial was at Oak Knoll Memorial Park.

CAROL LINTON STERLING - On Friday, October 30, 2020, Carol Linton, loving mother of three boys, passed away at the age of 88 at CGH Medical Center, Sterling.

Carol was born on Oct. 20, 1932 to Rothmer and Myrtle (Jacobson) Bushman of Coleta.

She attended Milledgeville High

School and Western Illinois University.

She worked in the administrative office at Sterling High School, and then spent many years as head bookkeeper for Sauk Valley College.

Carol loved her family, and took much joy in her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was also an avid animal lover, especially her cats. She enthusiastically cheered on her Chicago Bears and St. Louis Cardinals.

Survivors include three sons, Gary (Sandy) Linton of Sterling, Tim (Karin Murphy) Lintono of Milledgeville and Pat (Tracy) Linton of Maize, Kansas; six grandchildren, Gary (Brenda) Linton Jr., Andrew (Amy) Linton, Ben (Erica) Linton, Rachel Linton, Allison Linton and Abigail Linton;one stepgrandchild, Mike (Megan) Surma; eight great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A private graveside service for immediate family was held Nov. 13 at West

Genesee Cemetery near Coleta.

Electronic cigarettes (also called e-cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery systems) are battery-operated devices designed to deliver nicotine with flavorings and other chemicals to users in vapor instead of smoke. They can be manufactured to resemble traditional tobacco cigarettes, cigars or pipes, or even everyday items like pens or USB memory sticks; newer devices, such as those with fillable tanks, may look different. More than 250 different e-cigarette brands are currently on the market.

Most e-cigarettes consist of three different components, including: a cartridge, which holds a liquid solution containing varying amounts of nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals; a heating device (vaporizer); and a power source (usually a battery). In many e-cigarettes, puffing activates the battery-powered heating device, which vaporizes the liquid in the cartridge. The resulting aerosol or vapor is then inhaled (called vaping).

E-cigarettes are designed to simulate the act of tobacco smoking by producing an appealingly flavored aerosol that looks and feels like tobacco smoke and delivers nicotine but with less of the toxic chemicals produced by burning tobacco leaves.

Although they do not produce tobacco smoke, e-cigarettes still contain nicotine and other potentially harmful chemicals. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug, and recent research suggests nicotine exposure may also prime the brain to become addicted to other substances. Also, testing of some e-cigarette products found the vapor to contain known carcinogens and toxic chemicals (such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde), as well as potentially toxic metal nanoparticles from the vaporizing mechanism. The health consequences of repeated exposure to these chemicals are not yet clear.

Some people believe e-cigarette products may help smokers lower nicotine cravings while they are trying to discontinue their tobacco use. However, at this point it is unclear whether e-cigarettes may be effective as smoking-cessation aids. There is also the possibility they could perpetuate the nicotine addiction and thus interfere with quitting.

Early evidence suggests that e-cigarette use may serve as an introductory product for youth who then go on to use other tobacco products, including conventional cigarettes, which are known to cause disease and lead to premature death. A recent study showed that students who have used e-cigarettes by the time they start 9th grade are more likely than others to start smoking traditional cigarettes and other smokable tobacco products within the next year.

E-cigarettes are increasingly popular among teens. Some states have banned sale of e-cigarettes to minors,however,teens continue to order online. Their easy availability (online or via mall kiosks), in addition to their wide array of cartridge flavors (such as coffee, mint, candy, and fruit flavors), have helped make them particularly appealing to this age group. In an effort to help protect the public from the dangers of tobacco use, the FDA established a rule that purchasers be at least 18 years of age.

n the spirit of Thanksgiving next week how about some facts about turkeys.

Turkeys are more than just big chickens–more than 45 million years of evolution separates the two species.

The wild turkey was hunted nearly to extinction by the early 1900s, when the population reached a low of around 30,000 birds. But restoration programs across North America have brought the numbers up to seven million today.

I will admit, while people love the wild turkeys in Lanark, I really despise them. I think they are gross.

Male turkeys are called “gobblers,” after the “gobble” call they make to announce themselves to females (which are called “hens”) and compete with other males.

Other turkey sounds include “purrs,” “yelps” and “kee-kees.”

Turkeys can run at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour and fly as fast as 55 miles per hour.

One little Chas fact…I do not prefer to eat turkey but I will eat ground turkey and turkey sausage. I know, it makes no sense at all. My grandma always made sure we had ham.

​COVID-related death, 178 new cases in area STAFF REPORT The Whiteside County Health Department on Saturday announced another COVID-related death of a person in his or her 90s, bringing the county’s total death count to 55.

In addition, Whiteside County had 147 new cases Saturday and 31 more on Sunday. On Saturday, there were 13 people younger than 20, 19 in their 20s, 20 in their 30s, 25 in their 40s, 22 in their 50s, 28 in their 60s, 14 in their 70s and six older than 80 – and 30 recoveries.

On Sunday, there was one person younger than 20, six in their 20s, six in their 30s, three in their 40s, eight in their )50s, two in their 60s, four in their 70s, and one older than 80.

The positivity rate for Whiteside County on Sunday was 25.8% with 14/8% for the state of Illinois. That rate is based on an Illinois Department of Public Health rolling average.

Lee, Ogle and Carroll counties did not report updated statistics on Saturday or Sunday.

Whiteside County has had 3,074 cases and 55 deaths. Lee County has had 1,298 cases, 788 recoveries and five deaths. Ogle County has had 2,099 cases, 1,548 recoveries and 10 deaths. Carroll County has had 794 cases, 526 recoveries and 19 deaths.

Even without being used as a quarantine facility, case numbers started to grow. By mid-September, there had been 56 cases among inmates at Thomson. On Nov. 4, there were 99 active cases. Two days later, than number had grown to 124.

Death at Dixon Correctional Center Amid a surge in the number of active coronavirus cases at Dixon Correctional Center, the first inmate has died from COVID-19, according to authorities.

The inmate, a man in his 70s, died Nov. 6, said Lindsey Hess, public information officer for the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Deaths are not being reported on IDOC’s website, but the John Howard Association, a prison watchdog group in Illinois, reported that through the end of October, at least 29 inmates had died from complications caused by the virus.

No DCC staff have died from the virus, Hess said.

The inmate’s death marks a sobering turning point at the medium-security prison at 2600 N. Brinton Ave., which in the last month has witnessed an explosion in the number of incarcerated individuals and staff who have tested positive for the virus.

As of Thursday, there are 128 active COVID-19 cases among inmates, and 53 active COVID-19 cases among staff, according to IDOC.

STAFF REPORT Cases of COVID-19 are on the rise at two area prisons.

As of Saturday afternoon, there were 181 active inmate cases and 14 staff cases at Thomson.

Nationally, as of Friday, 125,375 federal inmates and 3,121 staff tested positive.

Thomson currently has the fourth-highest number cases among inmates in a federal facility, trailing only Tucson, Fort Dix and Beaumont Low, while 131 inmates and 52 staff members have recovered.

The 181 cases represents more than 13% of Thomson’s total inmate population.

This comes in the middle of ongoing staffing issues at the federal lockup. Thomson is authorized by the Bureau of Prisons to have 465

How to support local agriculture this fall (MCS)

The global pandemic that has upended daily life has exacted a toll on many industries. Businesses have been asked to close or temporarily scale back operations, while organizers of recreational gatherings have been tasked with reevaluating the practicality and safety of annual events.

Throughout the United States and Canada, autumn fairs, exhibitions and activities provide revenue for many people. But due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, many of these annual events have been postponed, adversely affecting local agricultural industries as a result. Governments in certain places have responded to the cancellations and offered assistance to local farmers and agricultural industries. For example, the Province of Ontario is providing nearly $1 million to assist organizations that had to cancel fall events due to the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to supporting such efforts, the general public can pitch in to help offset some of the financial losses accrued by local farms.

Many farms have implemented safety protocols that align with COVID-19 health recommendations to safely welcome visitors. Things may look a little differently at orchards and farms, but smaller crowds and

wearing masks should not compromise the fun of picking your own foods. • Explore farm-to-table.
