Morrison man pleads guilty to pair of burglaries Merema sentenced to serve 5 years in prison

BY TIMOTHY EGGERT teggert@shawmedia.com MORRISON — A 25-year-old Morrison man, who together with a Morrison teen committed a pair of thefts this fall, pleaded guilty Oct. 27 to two criminal felony counts of burglary, receiving a sentence of five years in prison.

Colton M. Merema, arrested on Sept. 10, was initially charged with one count of residential burglary, a Class 1 Felony, and two counts of burglary – both Class 2 Felonies – after police said he broke into a residence by himself, and robbed a business and another residence with 18-year-old Logan D. Smith, of Morrison.

Prosecutors said Merema and

Smith on Aug. 30 broke into a residential shed at 18876 Mellots Road, and on Sept. 2 robbed a temporary office owned by Inter Connection Systems Inc, a solar engineering firm located at 14488 Hillside Road.

The pair removed tools and other items from both locations, according to prosecutors.

Whiteside County Sheriff’s deputies found the reported stolen items during a search of Smith’s rural Morrison residence on Sept. 10, and Merema later admitted to committing the robberies with Smith, who is charged with two counts of burglary.

Deputies also discovered a significant amount of methamphetamine and a firearm in their search of the residence.

Those findings led to Smith facing one count of possession of 15 to 100 grams of methamphetamine, a Class 1 Felony punishable by 4 to 15 years in prison, and one count

of unlawful use of weapons for possessing a WARDS Hercules Model 10, 20-gauge shotgun with a barrel less than 18-inches.

Smith is being held in Whiteside County Jail on a Colton Merema $100,000 bond. He pleaded not guilty to the four charges on Sept. 28, and has a pretrial conference scheduled for Dec. 8.

Court filings further allege that Merema on Aug. 27 broke into and stole items from a residence at 19825 Matthew Road.

That residential burglary charge, along with a trio of traffic tickets, will be dismissed under Merema’s agreement to plead guilty to the two burglary charges.

He was sentenced by 14th Judicial Circuit Presiding Judge Trish A. Senneff to two concurrent five year

sentences in state prison.

Merema will also be subject to two years of mandatory supervised release, more than $800 in fines and a restitution charge of $2,151.27 for damages related to the thefts.

According to court records, Merema has a history of burglary, theft and physical assault convictions spanning from 2011 to 2018.

Senneff acknowledged that criminal history Tuesday, telling Merema that his “permanent address seems to be the [Illinois] Department of Corrections” and that she hopes the IDOC doesn’t have “a wing named after you.”

Merema said that he was “very tired” of spending his adult life in custody.

“You’re a young man, and still have time to pull this together,” Senneff said. “I hope soon you see the light, that there’s something to jolt you awake and make you see this has got to stop.”

Number of recorded cases has doubled since Oct. 5

BY TIMOTHY EGGERT teggert@shawmedia.com STERLING – While nurses inside the COVID-19 unit at the CGH Medical Center rushed to strap on caps, face shields and gowns before entering the room of a patient who was calling out, frightened that he couldn’t catch his breath, Kristie Geil was reassuring him that everything would be OK. She has learned that a patient’s anxiety comes from a lack of oxygen – one of the most intense effects of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus – and that patients, isolated from their families and the community, benefit from her encouragement.

But those comforts only go so far, and for this patient, they were his last.

He died Friday morning and now represents one of the 30 patients in Whiteside County who have died from the disease since March.

“No patient is going to die alone in our hospital,” said Geil, the chief nursing officer at CGH Medical Center. “The nurses are at their bedside because you can’t be there right now, and they will continue to do so, and our physicians – but we really need your help right now.”

Geil’s appeal was the focus of a larger plea made Oct. 30 by local public health officials at an afternoon news conference for residents in Whiteside County to take serious measures aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus.

Officials urged residents to wear face coverings when in public, wash their hands for more than 20 seconds, stay 6 feet apart and to avoid physical contact or gathering indoors with others within homes and at local businesses.

“The choices we make every day matter in how this turns out, and it matters especially right now,” said Dr. Eric Kuhns, who heads the CGH department of medicine and leads the CGH Coronavirus Task Force.

“We haven’t seen anything like this before. It’s really bad right now,” Kuhns said. “We really need your help right now.”

Kuhns’ and other health officials’ concern is largely rooted in recent surges in new cases of the virus and increases in admissions to local hospitals.

On Friday, Whiteside County reported 65 new cases, bringing the number of cases recorded since the start of the pandemic to 1,784.

That total has doubled since Oct. 5, when the number of cases recorded by the county was only 892.

CGH Medical Center’s critical care unit consistently treats 20 to 25 patients with COVID-19, Geil said, but the hospital hosts between 45 and 50 patients with the virus each day.

Those totals and the sobering likelihood of more infections and transmission unless community members take preventative steps will only add to the stress nurses and other medical professionals feel each day, Geil said.

“My team has been wearing [industrial N100 masks] for eight months,” Geil said. “And we’re really tired, and we need your help.”

Geil added that she doesn’t judge anyone for wanting to socialize and spend time with one another. She just asks that residents act responsibly when they do.

Sterling to address flagrant mitigation violations Officials ask county for enforcement support

BY TIMOTHY EGGERT teggert@shawmedia.com STERLING – The city’s top official has called on county authorities to back up local deployment of enforcement measures, such as seeking closure orders and bringing misdemeanor charges, on businesses that consistently fail to comply with enhanced coronavirus mitigations.

Mayor Skip Lee made that petition for reinforcement – his most assertive since Whiteside County was placed under Tier 1 resurgence mitigations Oct. 3 and moved to Tier 2 resurgence mitigations Oct. 25 – during an afternoon news conference in Oct.30.

The city will be “examining” the liquor licenses of businesses “flagrantly disregarding the rules,” and the Sterling Police Department will “vigorously work to enforce the guidelines and respond to calls,” Lee said.

But those actions can only have a meaningful effect if Whiteside County State’s Attorney Terry Costello and the Whiteside County Board “aggressively support” them, Lee said.

“The County Board must empower the health department to enforce these regulations and recommendations,” Lee said. “The Whiteside County state’s attorney must aggressively back law enforcement to act in this battle, as is happening in other counties.”

Without the support of county leadership, Lee said, municipalities will not be successful in slowing the spread of the virus and saving lives.

“Now is not the time to stand on the sidelines and play constitutional word games,” Lee said. “We are at the point now where we need to be all in.”

Under the additional resurgence mitigations, bars and restaurants must now limit the parties at outdoor tables to six guests while continuing to prohibit indoor dining and drinking, close before 11 p.m., and practice social distancing.

Lee said Costello has outlined a procedure for enforcing the wearing of face coverings in public based on a set of Illinois Department of Public Health emergency guidelines adopted by a legislative rule-making panel in August.

“The bottom line is, law enforcement or the health department, no one can take enforcement measures unless the state’s attorney is willing to back them up,” Lee said.

Costello could not immediately be reached Friday afternoon for clarification.

He did say in an email last week that his office would handle any potential violations of the emergency regulations the same as any other case.

“Should any law enforcement agency forward a criminal complaint and report regarding an alleged violation of that section, it would be reviewed for prosecution the same as any other case that law enforcement submits to my office for prosecution,” Costello said in an email.

Under the IDPH emergency regulations, county health departments function as the first layer of enforcement, typically relying on a complaint-based system to investigate businesses.

After a person submits a complaint, a health department inspector will call or visit the business to share information on the guidelines.

When a second complaint is received, health department staff visits the business. If an inspector observes a violation of the guidelines

– such as employees not wearing face coverings or enforcing social distancing of patrons – then the inspector issues a written noncompliance warning.

The warning identifies the violation and directs the business to amend it by a certain date.

If a business fails to rectify the noncompliance or fails to comply with another guideline, health department officials may order it to have some or all of the people on its premises leave.

A business that does not comply after three noncompliance warnings could have its food permit or liquor license pulled, and it will be referred to the state’s attorney for an injunction order to close.

A business that does not comply with an order to disperse could be hit with a Class A misdemeanor, which carries a punishment of up to 364 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.

Law enforcement might only be used to serve a business with the misdemeanor citation, but any further prosecution depends on a county state’s attorney.

Lee said he couldn’t speak to whether Whiteside County Sheriff John Booker would encourage his deputies to enforce the guidelines, but called on him to support the city’s enforcement measures nonetheless.

In a phone call, Booker said he’s committed to following up with every complaint his department receives related to potential violations and that he has directed his deputies to enforce the face covering mandate outlined in the IDPH emergency regulations.

“In terms of the mitigations, the emergency rule doesn’t say anything about indoor dining at bars and restaurants,” Booker said. “So I can only enforce what I have the power to enforce under the emergency rules.”

Booker added that the sheriff’s office doesn’t hold primary jurisdiction in the city of Sterling or any other city in Whiteside County, meaning that local enforcement falls to local police forces.

“If the state’s attorney needs us to enforce something, we’ll do what we can,” Booker said. “But if the mayor needs enforcement, he has the power to direct his city’s police force, not ours.”

Federal ruling will increase salaries

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@shawmedia.com THOMSON – A Federal Salary Council ruling could help ongoing staffing issues at Thomson Prison.

The council last week voted to add Carroll County to the Davenport-Moline Locality Pay Area, which means a raise for 335 federal government employees in the county.

The federal government’s Office of Personnel Management uses locality pay areas to compare salaries for government jobs to those of non-government jobs in that area in order to offer higher wages to the federal government employees if those people would be earning more money in the private sector.

Prior to adding Carroll County, the Davenport-Moline LPA included Scott, Clinton and Muscatine counties in Iowa, as well as Henry, Mercer and Rock Island counties in Illinois. Bureau County is part of the

According to usajobs.gov, a correctional officer at Thomson had a starting salary of $54,668, and a medical records technician was paid $43,065 before the pay bump.

The disparity in pay between what a corrections officer could make at Thomson compared with a

state prison or a federal facility in a city such as Chicago is one of the reasons the union representing staff at Thomson, American Federation of Government Employees Local 4070, felt was leading to ongoing staff shortages.

Thomson is authorized by the Bureau of Prisons to have 465 corrections officers, but has just 201.

“The Bureau of Prisons, along with USP Thomson staff, are looking

into creative ways to increase staffing at this time,” said Emery Nelson of the BOP’s Office of Public Affairs.

Those ways include holding job fairs, such as the one Thomson hosted Saturday, as well as posting jobs on usajobs.gov, indeed.com, monster.com and ziprecruiter.com.

Thomson also has its own recruitment hotline, where people interested in joining the staff can call 815-259-1666.

As of Tuesday, Thomson has an inmate population of 1,327, up from the 1,090 the facility housed in August, although Nelson said that inmate transfers to Thomson, built to house 2,800 inmates, have slowed to allow for additional staff growth.

The number of corrections officers on staff to oversee those inmates has remained steady.

When the facility first opened, officials claimed it would employ 1,100 people.

Construction on the facility was completed in 2001, built by the state of Illinois. But the state never had the money in its budget to open Thomson, and sold it to the federal government for $165 million in 2012.

Whiteside has largest COVID-19 surge in October

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@shawmedia.com Whiteside County announced its biggest concentration of coronavirus cases in October since the start of the pandemic, and Lee County reported its second death during the weekend.

The Whiteside County Health Department announced 43 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, as well as six additional recoveries.

The new cases involve six people under 20, four in their 20s, 11 in their 30s, seven in their 40s, 10 in their 50s, three in their 60s, one in their 70s and one over 80.

The month of October was by far the worst for Whiteside County cases since the pandemic began. There were 1,049 total cases in the month, up from 269 in September and 223 in August. The 50-59 age group was hardest hit, with 178 new cases, but every age group saw sharp increases over previous months.

Lee County announced late Saturday night that it had 53 new cases, 27 of which are from the Dixon Cor-

rectional center. There was also a COVID-related death of a Lee County resident in their 60s. Lee County announced an additional 12 new cases Sunday, with nine from the Dixon Correctional Center.

Dixon Correctional Center has 192 cases among inmates and 62 among staff.

Lee County residents with new cases Saturday included two teens, nine people in their 20s, three in their 30s, three in their 40s, five in their 50s, three in their 60s and one in their 70s. Sunday’s new cases involved one teen, one person in their 30s and one in their 60s.

In addition, 22 residents were lifted off of isolation Saturday having recovered and eight were lifted off of isolation Sunday.

Ogle and Carroll counties did not report updated statistics on Sunday.

Whiteside County has had 1,902 cases and 31 deaths. Lee County has had 905 cases, 586 recoveries and two deaths. Ogle County has had 1,336 cases, 1,162 recoveries and eight deaths. Carroll County has

had 499 cases, 369 recoveries and 19 deaths.

The North region (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties) has seen six days of positivity increases and six days of hospital admission increases – increases in both metrics. The region’s positivity rate decreased slightly from 13.6% to 13.5%. This remains the highest rate of any of the state’s 11 regions. Currently, 35% of medical/ surgical beds and 37% of ICU beds are available.

After failing to lower its positivity rate below 8%, the North region (Region 1) was moved into the IDPH’s Tier 2 mitigation measures – the only of the state’s 11 regions to

reach the second tier. Among other things, this means gatherings are limited to 10 people and outdoor dining groups are limited to six people instead of 10.

The region’s counties reporting the highest positivity rates are Stephenson (17.9%), Boone (17.6%), Whiteside (15.1%) and Carroll (15%).

The Carroll County positivity rate with Sunday’s reporting increased more than three percentage points from Saturday’s report of 11.9%.

DeKalb County’s positivity rate increased from 10.2% to 10.6%.

To get back to the standard Phase 4 restrictions, the region will need to maintain an average positivity rate of less than or equal to 6.5% over a three-day period.

The Illinois Department of Public Health on Sunday announced 6,980 new cases and 35 deaths. Illinois has had 417,280 cases and 9,792 deaths.

Sterling has had 7,309 tests and 662 cases. Rock Falls has had 3,683 tests and 427 cases. Dixon has had 8,287 tests and 597 cases. Rochelle has had 5,168 tests and 653 cases.

Rock Falls, Eastland compete at 1A sectional Rockets take second while Cougars finish in 13th place

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com MARSEILLES – The Rock Falls girls cross country team followed up last week’s regional title by closing out the season with a second-place run at Saturday’s Class 1A Seneca Sectional.

That would have qualified the Rockets for the state meet for the fourth year in a row had the state meet not been canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rock Falls scored 109 points, second only to Big Northern Conference rival Winnebago’s 15. Winnebago also boasted the individual champion, Natalia Martino, whose 19:01.2 run beat East Dubuque’s Hailey Heiar by 14 seconds. Winnebago also had runners in third, fourth, fifth and sixth.

Calin Gaulrapp, running in the same phase as Martino and Heiar in the event run in four phases due to COVID protocols, had the top time for Rock Falls, finishing 17th in 21:11.0.

Martino went out quickly and built what proved to be an insurmountable lead, and Heiar was closest to chasing her down but could not quite chip away. A pack of three runners were slightly behind Heiar, and Gaulrapp was not far behind them.

“My plan was either to stay on their shoulder or to make sure I could see their backs in the distance,” Gaulrapp said. “If they got too far away, I knew I wasn’t doing good.”

Gaulrapp found herself in a sprint to the finish, but was able to hold off Mercer County’s Eden Mueller.

“II was using the people screaming,” Gaulrapp said. “I knew they were saying her name, so I knew she was pretty close to me.”

Rock Falls also had Gracie Rippy take 19th with a time of 21:15.3.

Tayli Hultin was 23rd with a time of 21:24.8, running in the third phase in which she was the third finisher behind a pair of Winnebago runners.

“I was just completely ignoring them,” Hultin said. “If I went out with them, I would have died.”

Ganther was in the same phase as Rippy, the second, and the two planned to go out at a slower pace after seeing Gaulrapp fade near the end of her race.

“Gracie has been in front of me every race, so I was just pacing off her,” Ganther said. “In the second mile, we were getting into the woods and it was hurting my legs, but all I knew was we had two laps of the woods and we’re out, and all I could think was ‘chill out and keep running and the second [lap] try to get people’ which I did. A lot of people were struggling up the huge hill, and that benefited me a lot.”

Another Rock Falls senior, Sydney Reyes, finished 38th in 22:08.3 Oregon notched 221 points to finish 10th.

Faith Marquardt was the Hawks’ top runner, taking 28th overall with a time of 21:38.3 “It was kind of difficult, because the course is difficult because of all the hills, but it felt pretty good,” she said.

The Hawks had Leah Watters in 41st, Katlyn Ramirez in 45th, Jennica Ciesiel in 66th and Katelyn Bowers in 83rd.

Eastland was 13th with 295 points.

Mara Schmieder was the top Cougar, taking 58th place in 22:59.9 to beat teammate Delaney Wilhelms by one-tenth of a second. Addison Burkholder was 69th, Jenica Stoner took 75th and Kennedy Burkholder

was 96th.

Amboy was 14th with 316 points.

Lauren Althaus was the top Clipper, finishing in 22:28.2 for 47th place. Elly Jones was in 50th, Madelyn McLaughlin took 70th, Bailey Crouch was 100th and Brooklyn Whelchel was 111th.

Erie-Prophetstown’s Dylan Chandler finished 26th with a time of 22:03.5.

“It was pretty difficult, so it’s good

I had such a good time for a difficult course like this,” she said.

Polo’s Bekah Zeigler capped off her first year of cross country with an 85th-place run in 24:00.2.

“I had absolutely no expectations coming into sectionals. I was just happy to get here,” she said. “It’s a nice end to this season. Obviously not my greatest race, but for my first cross country season, I enjoyed it a lot.”

MORRISON – Marjorie Anne Schleuning, 84, of Resthave Nursing Home, Morrison, died Monday, October 26, 2020 at Resthave.

A private family visitation and funeral service will be held at the Morrison chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Interment will be in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Memorials to Resthave Home and Morrison United Methodist Church have been established.

Marjorie was born February 4, 1936 in Davenport, Iowa, to Earl R. and Vivian (Hooyer) Walker. She was a graduate of Chadwick High School and attended Carthage College in Carthage.

On Aug. 7, 1960 she married Robert W. Schleuning in Chadwick. He died Feb. 15, 1994.

Marjorie taught fifth grade in Mt. Carroll and Chadwick, and later worked for Morrison Community School District #6 in special education.

She was a member of the Morrison United Methodist Church, where she held offices in Faith Circle and United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the choir and bell choir, served on the Administrative Council and Staff Parish Committee, and held offices in Chapter F.L.P.E.O. She also was on the Resthave Board.

Survivors include two daughters, Anne (Norm) Balk of Fulton and Cathy (Greg) of Morrison; three sons, Bill (Deb) Schleuning of Sterling, Steve (Sandy) Schleuning of Green Oaks, John (Lorena) Schleuning of Albany; and five grandchildren, Cory Balk, Parker Schleuning, Rebecca Schleuning, Marlana Schleuning, and Scot Schleuning.

She was preceded in death by her

husband, Robert; and two brothers, Roger and David Walker.

ARTHUR C. ‘ART’ SCHROEDER MORRISON - Arthur C. “Art” Schroeder, 101, of Morrison, died Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at Resthave Home in Morrison.

A private graveside service was held Monday, Nov. 2, at the Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison. The Morrison chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial to Our Savior Lutheran Church has been established.

Art was born Nov. 11, 1918 in Ustick Township. He was educated in the Morrison grade schools and was a graduate of Morrison High School.

He served in the Army as a gunner in the New Caledonia Islands during WWII. On July 1, 1951 he married Evelyn M. Radatz in Sterling. She died Jan. 9, 2005.

Art was a co-owner of Schroeder Brothers Carpenters in Morrison for his entire life, retiring in 1985.

He was a former member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Morrison, and a current member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Sterling.

Art was a charter member of the Morrison VFW Post #8281. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and crafting things with his woodworking skills.

Survivors include one daughter, Elaine (Charles) Carp of Morrison; two sons, Arlyn (Eileen) Schroeder of Rockford and Allan Schroeder of Morrison; six grandchildren, Jamie (Rob) Sherwood, Jodi (Nathan) Ivey, Rebecca Schroeder, Lukas Schroeder, Jennifer Carber, and Todd

(Allyson) Schroeder; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one niece, three nephews and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn; one brother, Clarence Schroeder; and one half brother, John Rosenow.

LAWRENCE W. TEGELER MOUNT CARROLL – Lawrence W. Tegeler, 91, died Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at Allure Nursing Home in Mount Carroll.

Lawrence was born on Oct. 30, 1928 in Fenton, the son of Martin and Winnie (Tervelt) Tegeler.

He married Edna Mae Wiersema on Feb. 24, 1950. She died July 18, 2020.

He was educated in rural Bunker Hill School, Fenton. Lawrence farmed in Whiteside and Carroll counties until 1975, when he began working for Omar Pitts Construction in Chadwick for 5 years.

He was then self-employed in construction for 28 years.

Lawrence was a former as well as charter member of Faith Reformed Church in Lanark. He was a former deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher, RCYF Youth Leader and catechism teacher to all from Faith Reformed Church. Lawrence and Edna were also foster parents for many years.

Survivors include one daughter, Laurinda K. (Rich) Ten Pas of Stockton; one son, Roger D. (Sue) Tegeler of Maynard, Iowa; one sister, Pauline Wherry of Sterling; four grandchildren, Pachia (Mark) Rice, Nicole (Jim) Tartaglia, Tabatha (Jesse) Osmundson and Joshua (Becky) Tegeler; eight great-grandchildren, Payton Broshous, Elijah Rice, Piper Brown, Jameson Brown, Lydia Tegeler, Caleb

Tegeler, William Osmundson and Jamie Osmundson; and one great-great-grandchild, Hartlee Broshous.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Kate Ottens, Theresa VenHuizen, Ann Shaver, and Bernice Tegeler; and 10 brothers, Ben, Clarence, Maynard, John, Kenneth, Louis, LeRoy, Henry, Marvin and Raymond Tegeler.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

Arrangements were completed by the McDonald Funeral Home in Fulton.

t is over…the election is over. The signs are going down, the calls, emails, and mail will decline.

While we may not have all the details finalized and I am unsure how I think the world will be now, I know I did my part by exercising my right.

Now, we wait and see.

With the craziness of this past year, we finally got the chance to go away to Mexico a trip that had been rescheduled a number of times.

I would not hesitate at all to travel again soon. In our current world, I had no concerns with the safety nor risk of the virus.

Now coming back to a real feel of 23 degrees was a sore eye opener for sure.

I can say I did not miss our weather here.

Customer Service in Mexico never ceases to amaze me. They are so thankful to have us there. They continuously go above and beyond in ways that I wish we would only consider going to.

Illinois 84 to be closed south of Savanna SAVANNA — Illinois 84 south of Savanna will be closed to all through traffic from Monday, Nov. 2, through Friday, Nov. 6, according to a release by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The closure will allow the BNSF Railroad to remove and replace the at-grade crossing located just north of Airport Road. A detour utilizing Argo Fay Road, Illinois 78, and Illinois 64/US 52, the release said.

Drivers are asked to be alert for the road closure and use alternate roadways when traveling this area.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

Arlene Bickelhaupt honored the past members, Margy Bausman, Pat Noble and Delores Goodrow with a Memorial Service.

Lana Soldat was elected president, Susan Jacobs vice president and for a 1-year term for secretary, Lydia Hutchcraft. Michelle Schurman installed the new officers.

Nicole Adolph is the 2020 scholarship winner. Her grandmother, Arlene, read her essay on “Why we should keep the Electoral College,” as she is away at college.

Dues for 2021 were collected. The next meeting will be in February.

Six patrons can be accommodated in the library to use computers. A virtual story time is being started for children. The usual

fundraisers sponsored by The Friends of the Library are being replaced by a Go Fund Me Page. She noted how the community takes pride in the library and the support given by the community.

Meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month at noon.

During the present pandemic situation, the club is meeting at Mahaffey’s on Main, 121 East Main St., in downtown Morrison. We invite anyone interested in learning more about Lions and what we do to come to any of our meetings.

Newman senior not alone in battle against cancer

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@shawmedia.com The cross country postseason is the time of year Karlie Hey usually shines brightest.

After all, the Newman senior has two state medals to her credit: fourth as a freshman in 17 minutes, 48 seconds, and fifth as a sophomore in 17:29. She was also a state qualifier as a junior, and placed 46th.

Now Hey is facing a different challenge, and it appears to be one she’s winning, with some help along the way.

This past spring, Hey, a distance ace for the Comets’ track team, could not run without intense pain in her right hip. She got a cortisone shot and it helped for a few months.

Finally, on Aug. 3, a bone biopsy provided an answer, and it was not a good one: Hey had cancer.

Specifically, Hey had sarcoma, a tumor that occurs in bones and soft tissue. It is somewhat rare, with less than 200,000 cases per year.

“I thought it was just another small injury, especially since I had injuries before to my hip,” Hey said. “But then the more pain I had,

I knew this was not just another injury. It was something more than that.”

Hey underwent her 10th chemotherapy treatment recently and it has been effective. The tumor is still confined to her right hip and it does not appear to be growing or spreading.

Hey is scheduled to have an MRI, which will determine the next course of treatment. It will either be radiation, to kill the cancerous tumor, or surgery to remove it.

“We would prefer the radiation because it means that it has shrunk better and has gotten down,” Hey said. “Surgery is still OK, but we’re hoping for radiation. Whatever the outcome is, I’m ready to get done with it and keep continuing.”

Radiation or surgery is slated for mid-November, and that will be followed by 22 weeks of chemotherapy.

If all goes well, Hey will have a clean bill of health by late April or early May. Helping Hey along has been the Newman family and the cross country community in general. Teammate Noah Welty designed a t-shirt with state medals on it and a mes-

sage: “Tell cancer she doesn’t know how to lose.” The Comets wear these shirts before every race.

“Karlie is an accomplished runner, and I wanted to show that,” Welty said. “I didn’t want people to just think she was just some other runner. She’s a very special, talented athlete, and I wanted to show that off. She’s a fighter, and she’s going to beat this.”

The Erie-Prophetstown team had bracelets made to honor Hey. Coaches have reached out to Newman coach Pat Warkins to lend their support.

Warkins noted it’s been a season like no other, with COVID-19 restrictions and his top runner on the sideline.

“It’s been fun working with the kids, but you just kind of miss that leadership and bubbly attitude that Karlie has,” Warkins said.

On Oct. 15 at a meet in Kewanee, all of the runners wore t-shirts to honor Hey, and she was presented with gift cards to treat herself and family to dinner. She had no clue what was going on.

“Actually, I had no idea about it until I came up,” Hey said. “I was

like, ‘Mom, that girl’s shirt says Hey on it. Is that for me?’ She was like, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘Why do you have to hide things from me?’ She was like, ‘Because you have to have surprises.’ It was very heartwarming to me, to see everybody there with the support they had. It was very nice.”

If there is anything good to come out of this, Hey can see herself emerging as a person who can handle just about anything thrown her way.

“It’s definitely made me a stronger person already,” Hey said. “There are some days I’m like, ‘I don’t know if I could do this,’ but there are other days I’m like, ‘I got this.’ Having the support around me has really helped. I’m definitely not alone.”
