Board discusses ‘rolling return’ for students

BY MICHAEL MILLER For the Prairie Advocate SAVANNA — Stating that students are best served by classroom learning, West Carroll District Superintendent Julie Katzenberger laid out a “rolling return” for hybrid students to school board members on Sept. 16.

Katzenberger said hybrid students currently have two days a week of in class instruction, three days remote and if students are full-time remotes, they have five days of remote learning.

This plan was to be in effect for hybrid students until Sept. 18 and the district is looking for ways to bring more students back to class, the superintendent said.

The “rolling return” plan was sent to the Carroll County Health Department for review.

Under the plan, hybrid students would go four days a week; Monday will still be remote day.

During Week One, WCPS will bring back preschool, kindergarten and first grade to four days a week.

The Middle School would bring back 6th grade to four days a week, and the High School would bring back 12th grade to four days a week.

Week Two (Sept. 29 to Oct. 2) would see 2nd, 3rd and Juniors back and Week 3 would be 4th and 5th, 8th and then freshmen and sophomores.

Katzenberger said the state has put out “adaptive pauses” whereby each Friday the district receives county health statistics which could changes plans quickly.

Board president John McIntyre said he thought the return was “too long” and thought a two week return would be better.

“I’d hate to see us roll into a pause somewhere into that second week and then have a group of students that would completely miss out on a first week of school not in person.

In person schooling is just so much better,” he said.

He also said he’d favor the schedule “shortened down to just two groups rather than three”.

Katzenberger said the schedule could easily be modified.

Board member Nicole Thulen asked what the teachers thought about the plan. Primary Principal Tracy Rein said the survey in that school was split between keeping things the way they are and moving forward with the rolling return plan, though most did say it was best for students to be back in class.

Middle School Principal Brady Knop said the results of his survey (which was combined with the student survey) were mixed as to how to proceed, with 42 percent still favoring the hybrid model, and that he’d discussed the possibility that change might be coming with the teachers, including how to manage the dynamics of that change.

Katzenberger said one of the priorities that had been handed down from state officials was that every effort should be made to have in person education for students 13 years of age or under, English language learners and special education students.

High School Principal Joe Hanson said his teachers also wanted kids back in class, but 76 percent said they were not comfortable with full attendance for in person learning.

The same percentage voted to keep the hybrid model of learning.

Katzenberger said the letter from the public health administrator said the rolling return plan “should work quite safely. The rolling return could easily be reversed as needed.

You have covered all the bases. Well done.”

She added that all other area school were going full attendance, five days a week. She said the parents survey regarding the transition indicated that parents wanted their kids back

in the classrooms.

Kilpatrick said she felt the rolling return might be confusing to parents, though she agreed that shortening it to two weeks might make it less so.

Board member Fred Tipton wondered if the janitors would have as much time to keep the building clean as previously. Katzenberger said there are now three custodians at the Primary School, where there were previously three.

McIntyre said he was very concerned about students getting behind if they stayed out of class, and added he felt the protocols put in place by the district had been very effective. Katzenberger agreed, saying both students and staff had been doing what they needed to do to stay safe.

She said she thought the rolling return was the best way to go. “Nobody has a crystal ball, but I think it’s important to put our best foot forward.”

She added that COVID-19 could be around for two years. “As a school district, we need to educate kids and keep safe. And I think we are doing both to the best of our ability,” she said.

Kilpatrick said she had mixed feeling about it, having concerns about safety but understanding that kids need to be back in class, and Tipton agreed.

“We can’t afford to have teachers say ‘we’re not going to do it’ either,” he said.

Katzenberger said that last March there were 925 students enrolled in the district, and the plan called for only 569 to be back at once.

“There are choices out there,” she reminded the board, citing remote and home schooling. “These are the kids that want to be in school.”

Katzenberger said there were no positive cases in the district, though there have been people exposed to the virus, in which case they went

remote for ten days.

“I’m reluctant but I will support what you want to do,” Kilpatrick said, agreeing that a two week schedule makes more sense.

“We have procedures in place to adapt as needed,” Katzenberger said.

Nicole Thulen expressed concern about the amount of teachers that weren’t comfortable with the move.

She said with that percentage, “it’s going to be a mess.”

Katzenberger said the district was working with teachers to get the “comfort level” up, and cited all the precautions, including temperature checks, mask requirements and social distancing, already put in place.

She said tables, once a staple of cooperative learning, were no longer being used due to safety precautions.

No vote was taken on the issue.

In other action: • Katzenberger presented her regular report, which included the news that the Middle School roof has needed continual patching and continues to leak. She surmised that something more extensive will need to be done this year. Board member Beverly Kilpatrick noted this isn’t the only district roof that will need repairs.

• Approved the one bid for salt and snow removal for the upcoming season, from Ritchie in Savanna, for all three buildings.

• Approved a proposal for the Primary School remaining air conditioning (classrooms), to Loescher Heating and Air Conditioning for $71,340, plus other work for a total of $87,290.

• Approved a proposal from the City of Mount Carroll for a TIF extension. This will extend the time period for the existing TIF to remain in effect, adding 12 years to the effective period. Previously, there was about 7 and a half years left of the period, and now it will be close to 20 years.

West Carroll School Board approves budget

BY MICHAEL MILLER For the Prairie Advocate SAVANNA — Superintendent Julie Katzenberger delivered the 2020-2021 budget presentation Sept.

16 just prior to the opening of the regular meeting of the West Carroll Board of Education meeting.

Some of the highlights included the fact that while payments to the

district of evidence based funding have increased by 37 cents per payment from the previous year, the district’s expenses have increased as well and, according to the superintendent’s presentation, “37 cents does not account for adequate coverage of increases in expenses”.

She cited the 6.8 percent increase in health coverage premiums and the 30 percent in some food items

due to COVID-19 as examples.

Katzenberger called this “truly flat funding”.

West Carroll, she said, had been designated by ISBE at 69 percent financial adequacy to meet expectations. The range of adequacy ratings for the 143 school districts in the state range from 51 percent to 250 percent, she said.

Ten percent of the funding has

been set aside for roof repair or replacement at the Middle School, or about $425,000, which Katzenberger said would “probably not be enough” to cover costs of this repair.

She said last year the estimate for this work was about $650,000. The work could be completed in sections if need be, with the balance of the

Katzenberger closed by listing items for the strategic action plan, which included fiscal responsibility, academic excellence and age appropriate social emotional skills.

The board unanimously approved the balanced budget with no deficit reduction plan required.

expenses being paid out of fund balances, she said.

Categorical payments for regular and vocational education transportation were down over $32,000 from fiscal year 2019 to 2020. Likewise, reimbursement for special education transportation decreased over $88,000 over the same period, both due to a difference in the percentage of what the state funds.

She said the fewer students a district has, the less money it will receive from the state for transportation funds.

Title 1 Grants for the district are expected to decrease a little over $81,000 from FY 2020 to FY 2021; this is based on the number of students and poverty level.

Insurance costs for the district, paying for 100 percent of staff 12 months of the year, costs about 1.2 million dollars, Katzenberger said.

Both West Carroll Education Association and West Carroll Educational Support Personnel Association will be renegotiating contracts for FY 2022. Also, the minimum salary for a teacher in Illinois will go to $40,000 in School Year 2023/2024, not including health but does include retirement benefits. But the gap would still be around $7,000 per

teacher, on average.

The district still has five bonds to pay off, the superintendent noted.

The total debt payment for Fiscal Year 2021 will be $1,393,308. The district has over $9.3 million dollars in total debt to pay off.

Paid rates for the IMRF will go down from 20.29 to 18.47 percent during the first half of 2021. This will give the district a shortfall of about $11,000 for this expense, making the use of fund balances necessary.

“Half of the budget comes from somewhere else,” she said, referring to the fact that 40 percent comes from state funds and ten percent from federal.

Some of the questions she posed during the presentation included, Will there be a pension cost shift?; Will the graduated income tax pass in November? If not, what will the fallout be in education?; Will there be more unfunded mandates?”; Will taxes be frozen for homeowners?; and How will COVID-19 affect the economy which in turn reduces CPPRT revenue?

She also questioned the future of Social Security, IMRF and TRS and how these will affect the district, as well as the future of transportation funding.

“When you operate and maintain three school buildings for 831 students, it’s costly,” she said, adding that the two newer buildings were

Health department warns of potential COVID-19 exposure

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com THOMSON – The Whiteside County Health Department is warning of a potential COVID-19 exposure at a private event in Thomson.

The event was Sept. 12 between 5 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. at Majestic Pines

Lounge and Event Center. The business is located in Carroll County.

There was a person at the event who was asymptomatic, but is considered contagious, the department said in a news release.

The health department, through its contact tracers, has been working with the individual, but has not

been able to reach everyone who may be at risk.

The health department urges anyone who was at the event to limit their interactions with others until Sept. 27. They should also monitor their own health for symptoms of COVID-19 and consider getting tested.

Carroll County Relay for life virtual ceremony

The Whiteside County Health Department on Sunday announced five new cases of COVID-19. New cases involved three people in their 30s as well as a person under 20 and a person in their 60s.

Lee, Ogle and Carroll counties did not report updated statistics on Sunday. But on Sept.

14, the Carroll County Health Department announced 46 new cases.

That included positive test results over the weekend as well.

The new cases included 17 people in their 30s, 16 in their 40s, six in their 50s, two teens, two people in their 20s, two in their 70s and a person in their 60s.

At that time, Carroll County had 204 total cases of the novel coronavirus, of which 56 are inmates at Thomson Prison. Carroll County has had four COVID-related deaths.

Whiteside County has had 704 cases and 20 COVID-related deaths. Lee County has had 321 cases, 264 recoveries and one death. Ogle County has had 629 cases, 551 recoveries and six deaths.

Carroll County has had 214 cases, 195 recoveries and four deaths.

Illinois announced 1,402 new cases and 14 additional deaths Sunday.

The state has had 274,258 cases and 8,450 deaths. Sterling has had 3,294 tests and 250 positive cases.

SAVANNA – The Carroll-JoDaviess County Cancer Relay for Life committee will have a virtual luminaria ceremony at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Sept.

26 through WCCI Radio, 100.3 FM for residents to listen to this year’s event.

During the ceremony, names of those who have had a luminaria purchased in their name will be read, interspersed with music. Three area cancer survivors will tell their stories.

SAVANNA – Ruth J. Morfey, 65, of Savanna, passed away in her home, Monday, September 14, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Ruth was born June 20, 1955, in Sterling, the daughter of LeRoy and Mable (Stephens) Gray.

She attended Sterling High School.

On June 21, 1976, Ruth married Micky Morfey.

Ruth and Micky have long been proudly self-employed, owning and operating Seven Eagles Resort & Campgrounds, and the Upper Deck, for 26 and 23 years, respectively.

Ruth took an active role in her community, serving as a long-time member, and past president of the Savanna Rotary, and as a member of the Savanna Chamber of Commerce.

In her free time, she enjoyed tending to her flowers in her garden, and hosting friends and families.

In fact, she was a fantastic hostess!

She was an awesome cook, especially her soups, and made the world’s best margaritas.

Ruth will be dearly missed by her husband, Mick; sons, Jimmy Morfey, of Erwin, North Carolina and Jason (Natasha) Ritchie, of Hanover; daughter, Amy Johnston, of Savanna; six grandchildren, Allison, Maxwell, Eric, Cora, Wyatt and Lila; four brothers, Vernon, Tom, Jay, and Virgil; and three sisters, Caroline, Mable, and Violet.

Sue was born March 29, 1921, in rural Mosinee, Wisconsin, the daughter of Stanley and Francis (Augustyn) Kania.

On Sept. 23, 1947, in Fairfield, Iowa, Sue married Salvador Saporito. They remained by each other’s side until Salvador’s passing in 1984.

Sue was a homemaker for most of her life. Following Salvador’s retirement, they moved to Las Vegas. Sue called Las Vegas home for 25 years, but ultimately returned home to care for two of her

brothers. She took her role of caregiver quite seriously, and was a bright spot in her brothers’ lives.

Sue was an avid reader, and placed a great deal of importance on keeping her mind sharp. But it wasn’t just mental acuity that kept Sue going. Into her 90s, she would regularly walk miles at a time.

She was quite an active woman, both mentally and physically.

Sue will be dearly missed by her niece, Arlene Skonieczny of Thomson; nephew, James (Carol) Malysiak of the Galena Territory; and beloved members of her extended family, David (Susan) Schwaller of Plymouth, Minnesota, Sun Yung Shin of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Michael (Toni) Skonieczny of Niles, Susan (Michael) Legrady of Barrington, Karen (Tom) Simon of Ingleside, 11 greatgreat-nieces and nephews; and one great-great-great-nephew.

Sue is preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Francis; and her siblings, Eleanor, Josephine, Chester, Henry, and Joseph. Council talks over options for new building

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com MORRISON – The Morrison City Council continued discussions of a potential new public works building, but made no move to advance the project on Sept. 14.

The Fleet and Facilities Committee is looking at several plans for a public works building, including concepts for four different approaches.

One would build a public services building at the site of the old salt shed in Grove Hill Cemetery as a new headquarters of the Public Services Department while also using the city’s existing Norrish Road building to house snowplowing operations and for storage.

A second concept would also use the Norrish Road building for those same operations while building a

new facility at the wastewater treatment plant for public services.

A third concept would headquarter public services at Grove Hill, but instead of using the Norrish facility would build a new headquarters for snowplowing operations at the wastewater treatment plant.

A fourth proposal would build one large, all-encompassing facility at the wastewater plant and abandon the Norrish building.

Though there seemed to be some support on the council for the new building at the cemetery, Mayor R. Everett Pannier cautioned that members of the committee needed to sit down with public works employ-

ees to hash out any concerns they might have.

The council also unanimously voted to make the corner of Madison and Knox streets, near the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office, a four-way stop. Council members had at previous meetings expressed concerns over how dangerous that intersection was, and on Monday Morrison Police Chief Brian Melton told the council that he had gotten feedback supporting the move.

In addition, three parking spots

near the intersection will be removed and turned into a loading zone.

Morrison also will apply for funds through the state’s Local Coronavirus Urgent Remediation Emergency Support (CURE) Program. Those funds would reimburse the city for money spent early in the pandemic to buy things like face masks and hand sanitizer, though it would not fill any gaps in money coming in through things like lost sales tax revenue.

The city also completed the transfer of some land to the Morrison school district, which will be turned into 22 additional parking spots for Northside Elementary School.

For Shaw Media Dozens of historic deadly wildfires continue to consume millions of acres in the west, especially in California, Oregon and Washington where in some cases entire towns have been destroyed and tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes.

Red Cross volunteer David Boyles, of Morrison, is one of four volunteers who departed in a Red Cross emergency response vehicle to assist those impacted by wildfires in Oregon.

Boyles picked up the emergency response vehicle from the Red Cross office in Rockford, and he and fellow volunteer Bill Elenitsky left for Portland on Sept.

13.

He recently returned from a two-week deployment from Louisiana, where he assisted with Red Cross relief efforts after the widespread devastation brought

by Hurricane Laura.

He is joining 52 volunteers from the Illinois region who are currently deployed in Texas, Louisiana and Oregon.

More than 2,000 Red Cross volunteers are assisting communities impacted by disasters across the country.

The emergency response vehicles will aid in disaster relief to mobilize supplies such as food, water and snacks, clean-up kits, and other items once they arrive in Portland.

Mayfest organizers put movie night on the Quad

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com MT. CARROLL -- Mayfest was not in the cards this year for Memorial Day weekend. But the group that organizes Mayfest still wanted something for people in Carroll County, some event to bring them to the Quad on the old Shimer College campus.

People brought their families and some snacks, parked themselves on the grass in front of the Mayfest stage Saturday night, and came together to watch a movie.

“We’ve been doing movie nights at home with the kids,” organizer Brandon Ballard said. “It’s good to social distance, neighbors can come by, we do it outside. We just thought we’d roll it out here and see if it works.”

James Nye came from Savanna and set up on the Quad with his family, some snacks and a large picnic blanket for Saturday night’s screening of “Tangled” along with a couple dozen other people from around the area.

“It’s good to have anything the community can do together. It’s in the middle of the area, good, fun thing to do with the kids.”

It’s very scaled down from Mayfests in the past. Ballard brought back the festival in 2019 after it was not held in 2018, bringing music, a Civil War reenactment, craft vendors and a 5K to the community.

The 2020 edition went into a holding pattern in April once the COVID-19 pandemic began, with organizers looking at alternate dates for the event, considering putting something together to hold in conjunction with Mt. Carroll’s Independence Day celebrations, but ultimately calling things off.

Even in the spring, Ballard said organizers were looking at other options, and that ultimately turned into a movie night on the Quad.

“We’re on the Quad. We’re gathering as a community,” Ballard said.

“That’s what it’s all about, so it’s not a music festival, it’s something small, but it reminds everybody that there will be a time that we’ll be able to gather again.”

The movie night also served as a debut of sorts for the stage, which got a fresh coat of paint. Ballard and 15 to 20 others came to spruce it up, with members of the community even dropping by the lumber yard where Ballard got the supplies to pay off part of his bill.

“We got a new deck on it last year and a new roof on it this year,” Ballard said. “We’re looking forward to 20, 30 years of boot-stomping music on that thing.”

Mayfest organizers plan to keep the movie nights going with a couple planned for October, including a showing of “Hard Knox,” the 1984 movie filmed in Mt. Carroll which stars Robert Conrad as a retired fighter pilot who leads a military school.

“We’re really looking at expanding just to see what Mayfest can look like in the era of COVID,” Ballard said.

Well, the Savanna City Council heard a presentation Sept. 8 from Regina Vesely of Thomson, and Scott Stefanc, of Vortex Aquatics, a company based in Montreal, Canada that does “about 70 percent” of its work in North America.

Stefanc said that the company had constructed about 8,000 splash pads and aquatic venues, with offices all over the world.

Stefanc’s presentation stressed the role of splash pads in healthy communities and role of play in communities Some statistics he quoted included: one in five kids in the United

States play outside one day a week or less; one out of six kids in the United States are obese; and one in three kids in the United States are overweight.

In light of these figures, he said “getting people outside and keeping them healthy is more important now than ever.”

He said he felt there was a large demand for a splash pad in this community, and cited number of people who showed interest in the idea on Vesely’s Facebook page.

A splash pad is a playground with no standing water, all of it drains off the surface; no lifeguarding required, Stefanc said.

Stefanc said water aids in learning for kids, and helps kids with autism.

He added that splash pads foster team play and immersive activities,

which can be sensory, tactile, kinetic, or iconic.

“These elements have a dramatic effect on the livability of a community,” he said.

Vesely said she was requesting the full support of the council for such a project. She added that the city would not need to fund the project.

Alderman Roger Husband said while he would personally support the idea. “The City of Savanna doesn’t have a park department so this is not within the city’s scope,” he said.

Alderman Sarah Purdom said the project had her full support.

No action was taken on the item during the meeting.

The council also approved: • Promoting Eric Hartman to a

foreman position in Public Works, per a proposal from Public Works Superintendent John Lindeman.

Hartman will receive $20/hour, which will be a 10% rate increase.

• A request for an external hard drive for the extra storage footage for $300 for Hotel/Motel Marketing Director Brianna Junk.

• Appropriating $7.121 for billboard advertising on Route 20, near Elizabeth.

• Not exceeding $2,000 for hose bed covers for the fire department.

• Appointing Aldermen Roger Husband, Pat Sanchez, and Sarah Purdom as members of the ITEP streetscape committee.

• Approved a resolution to induce development at 523 Main Street, for Gina Dillon, who will be opening a new business at that location.

Dennis Stroughmatt when he presents Mussels, Moonshine and Music: Mississippi Valley Migrant Life in the Early Twentieth Century, at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 27.

Stroughmatt, cultural historian, will transport audience members to a time almost forgotten when the Midwest and Upper South were home to thousands of Americans who lived and worked on the rivers as sharecroppers, fishermen, mussel shellers, button cutters, traveling minstrels, and even moonshiners.

Through this intriguing program find

out about the often-unknown migrant work of the river-based mussel shellers, moonshiners, and musicians who worked in the late 19th and early 20th century Illinois, via photos, folk tales, oral histories and foot-stomping fiddle music.

Dennis Stroughmatt was taught to play fiddle by local Creole fiddlers Roy Boyer and Charlie Pashia in the tradition of their fathers.

Keep an inventory of crop acres, livestock, machinery, and chemicals. Have a stockpile of supplies needed to protect your farm.

Keep a fire extinguisher in all sheds/barns and vehicles and have extra fuel around for tractors and vehicles. Keep all employees informed of the farm’s emergency plan.

Milby, who died Aug. 27 from complications of renal cancer, was on the board for 14 years and served as the former Twin City Joint Fire Command Deputy Fire Chief.

Benefit show held Sept. 19

MORRISON — White Oaks Therapeutic Equestrian Center (WHOA) of Morrison hosted its 7th annual benefit horse show on Saturday at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds.

Twenty-eight classes including halter, riding, English and western pleasure, plus speed events were held throughout the day.

The morning schedule included halter, handling, and showmanship classes, and after lunch there were riding, costume, and English and western pleasure classes.

The afternoon wrapped up with “Ride a buck” with participants riding bareback while sitting on a dollar bill, and then riding with an egg on a spoon, which is a challenge with the reins in one hand.

About WHOA White Oaks is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, established in 1995 for the purpose of providing recreational, educational, therapeutic, and social opportunities for persons with disabilities.

WHOA programs improve physical capabilities and functional skills as well as furnish students the opportunity of added leisure time, physical activity and social interaction.

Therapeutic riding is made possible through the assistance of dedicated, trained volunteers who help with horses and riders, stable maintenance, special events and fundraising.

Fruits of labor: Apple orchard begins harvest The fall fun has just begun at Fairhaven Fruit Farm

BY SARAH FORD For Shaw Media THOMSON — An early season frost, an August derecho, and restrictions due to COVID-19 may sum up the 2020 season at Fairhaven Fruit Farm.

But on the bright side, the fall fun has just begun.

On Saturday, the apple orchard in rural Thomson had the first event of the season - a Fall Carnival complete with games, prizes, drinks, and apples.

Fruit farmers Ben Metz and Angel McDonough travel from their home in Dubuque almost daily for the never-ending work at the orchard.

The couple took ownership of the property nearly four years ago.

“I’ve been around the trees since the beginning of the orchard,” said Ben of his inspiration to take over when the previous owners retired.

Now that the trees are yielding and the fruits are ripe, the year’s labor will again pay off.

But the year’s challenges have taken their toll on the orchard that is home to over 1,200 apple trees. An early season frost took out most of the honeycrisp apples, and the derecho, which Ben described as 80 plus mph winds lasting over 40 minutes, knocked down 54 trees and a whole lot of maturing apples.

“There’s nothing you can do about mother nature,” Ben said. “We’re trying to piece everything together and keep it going.” With 44 varieties of apples cultivated on 3 ½ acres of the property’s 20, he estimates the year’s conditions affected about 80% of their crop.

Still, there’s a variety of apples

and other goodies ready for seasonal shoppers. Besides the weekend u-pick option, a cooler in the shop is stocked with bushels of apples and cherry and apple ciders. A slushie machine dispenses freshly pressed icy cider. Bread mixes, apple dips and caramel kits give plenty of options for cooking with apples.

Visitors can also find all ‘Made in the USA’ products in the shop, from GMO-free jellies and pickles, natural soaps and lip balms, apple cider donuts, fresh and frozen pies, caramel apples from Candy Kitchen of Galena (and exclusive to their orchard), and other handcrafted items.

The couple’s children are also involved in the operation, with “little entrepreneurs” Daisy and Neveah selling seashells or cut flowers, and Brayden manning the cash register.

A pumpkin patch is also nearing harvest and will be ready for customers in October.

Fifteen honey bee hives on the property are maintained by Fulton’s Honey Girl Honey, with a signature line produced and sold at Fruithaven. The couple also planted some blueberry bushes this year, just to see if they could grow in the local soil.

“I’m playing with chemistry this year,” said Ben, smiling.

During a normal season, the orchard is abundant with a variety of apples from galas to macs to fujis, and more are grafted every year.

It’s been a location for Farm Bureau camps for area youth. The property was once a dairy, and a round milk house painted with sunflowers marks that history.

Ben recently got a 100-year-old apple washing station operable, and he recycles, upcycles and repurposes various materials he comes across, with his handiwork displayed in the shop and around the grounds.

And he’s always on the look-out for interesting apple varieties, such as “Ludicrisp” that debuted this year.

The Gen’s Best variety was bred at the orchard, named after previous owner Genevieve. “I’m still trying to get an apple named after me,” Angel said with a laugh.

The couple credits their “awesome customers” for helping them weather this year’s storms. They’ll

be open on the weekends, come rain or shine this harvest season.

The next upcoming event is Johnny Appleseed Day on Saturday, Sept.

Ben said the farm is classified as essential, but precautions such as social distancing reminders and numerous handwashing stations are in place to help make people feel comfortable. Already in Colorado, Washington and elsewhere, massive special interest groups and lobbies have emerged to protect the marijuana industry.

As soon as Coloradans cast their votes for legalization in 2012, wouldbe profiteers celebrated the expected green rush. One former Microsoft executive proclaimed that he would create the “Starbucks of Marijuana” and “mint more millionaires than Microsoft.” A couple of Yale M.B.A.’s started a multimillion-dollar firm dedicated solely to financing the marijuana industry.

Indeed, the big business of marijuana was born.

Like Big Tobacco of yesteryear, Big Marijuana knows that it needs lifelong addicted customers to prosper. Addictive industries generate the lion’s share of their profits from addicts, not casual users. This means that creating addicts is the central goal. And – as every good tobacco executive knows (but won’t tell you) – this, in turn, means targeting the young.

Welcome to Big Tobacco 2.0. In the emerging marijuana industry, potent edibles in the form of colorfully packaged cookies, candies, sodas and brownies are being advertised on the Internet and in mainstream newspapers and magazines across the state. A relentless marijuana lobby insists that these products are not especially attractive to children, yet continues to block controls on advertising, labeling, shape and color. When Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper wanted to limit access to marijuana magazines containing cartoon ads and coupons for one dollar joints by placing them behind the counter out of reach of children, the industry sued and won. That was the first of many victories for the marijuana lobby, whose case is buttressed by protections of commercial speech as free speech.

This is not about mom-and-pop pot stores; it’s about, in the words of one “Ganjapreneur,” creating “the Wal-Mart of Marijuana.” And Big Tobacco is not just an analogy. According to internal documents that the government forced Big Tobacco to release during its historic court settlement, those companies are ready to pounce on the golden opportunity of drug legalization.

It is no wonder that the parent company of Phillip Morris, Altria, recently bought the domain names “AltriaCannabis.com” and “AltriaMarijuana.com.” If this sounds frightening, it should be.

Big Tobacco tried for decades to conceal the harms of their drug, and millions of lives were lost as a result. We are naive to think that this wouldn’t happen with any other drug that is legalized.

Large “cannabusinesses” have already ushered in mass advertising and vending machines. Now with legal cannabis barely in place, they have resorted to product giveaways (really) and they are aggressively embarking on rounds of multimillion-dollar investor fundraising.

In his article entitled “Big Tobacco’s future as Big Marijuana,” Leonid Bershidsky advises investors that, “Big Tobacco is poised to dominate” the legal cannabis market, and for that reason, “Big Tobacco may be one of the biggest opportunities of a lifetime.”

If this sounds familiar, it should. The tobacco and alcohol industries follow similar patterns while hawking their legal, addictive substances. And we know how that story ends: money-hungry industries, targeting the vulnerable, will stop at nothing to increase addiction and profit. Why would we want to repeat that debacle with marijuana?
