Morrison’s 2020 Paint the Town is canceled The coronavirus pandemic is responsible for the cancellation of plans throughout the world, including Morrison. The CAPA (The Children’s Art Preservation Association) announced with “sadness” last week that Morrison’s 2020 Paint the Town has been canceled. “This was not an easy decision to make,” organizers wrote in a press release. “Our passion for this event is balanced with our responsibility to our community and those who participate across all ages, as well anyone who makes this event happen. For this reason, we feel it is our duty to mitigate the ongoing risk of exposure to COVID-19. “Though our event was rained out last year, we distributed almost every single participant bag, t-shirts and materials, continued our scholarships and school programs, and

were thrilled to see the creative ways our community still ‘Painted the Town’ on their own, in garages, sidewalks, and elsewhere in the spirit of this historic event. “We encourage you to continue making art, and we thank our sponsors for their continued willingness to support the arts in and around our community. “We look forward to planning for 2021 but will miss the wonderful images that decorate Morrison each year. We will miss hearing all our musicians, the unique experiences created by our balloon artists and magicians, wonderful food and the faces of all enjoying the day with their families. “We encourage everyone to wear your masks, follow social distancing guidelines and stay safe! COVID-19 UPDATE

Whiteside reports 4 new cases of COVID-19 MORRISON — The Whiteside County Health Department announced four new cases of COVID19 on Sunday, with three new cases found in people younger than 20 and another in a person in his or her 20s. Whiteside County has now had 218 total cases and 15 COVID-19-related deaths. Lee County has had 106 cases, 94 recoveries and one death. Ogle County has had 307 cases, 255 recoveries and five deaths.

Carroll County has had 22 cases, 19 recoveries and two deaths. Statewide there were 954 new cases Sunday with 20 additional deaths, bringing the Illinois total to 153,916 cases and 7,187 COVID-related deaths. Sterling has had 1,203 tests conducted with 97 positive cases. Rock Falls has had 652 tests and 49 cases. Dixon has had 2,078 tests and 98 cases. Rochelle has had 1,776 tested and 177 cases.

The company originally took measures May 1 to try to assure social distancing, and encourage the use of masks by those older than 2, including posting signage indoors and out, and using barriers to restrict entrance to its stores. Recently, it added red and green directional floor markers, to encourage people to shop in one direction, so as not to be passing one another in the close quarters of an aisle. Walmart employees have been required to wear face coverings since April 20, and masked Walmart employees usually stood inside, by the door, but usually did not address those not wearing masks. Unmasked customers shopped regularly. As of last week, employee “health ambassadors” are verbally reminding people that the Walmart policy is that you must wear a mask while shopping.

A Dixon Walmart employee is posted outside the store, asking customers before they enter this afternoon if they have a mask. When asked if Walmart now is mandating customers to wear masks inside a store, a corporate spokeswoman who refused to be quoted by name said in an email only that:

“Our COVID-19 protocols have continued to adapt during the pandemic in response to evolving research and mandates spanning the country. Additional safety changes are tak-

ing effect to expand our efforts in reminding customers of the importance and necessity of wearing face coverings in our stores.” Sauk Valley Media conducted an unscientific survey of customers who entered local Walmart stores in Dixon and Sterling during a short period of time last week. Despite the more rigorous application of the rules, some customers continued to enter the stores without face coverings. From 5:05 to 5:20 p.m. at the Dixon Walmart, 1640 S. Galena Ave, 84 customers entered through the grocery-side doors while wearing face coverings, while six unmasked customers returned to the parking lot. From 4:10 to 4:25 p.m. at 4115 E. Lincolnway in Sterling, 80 customers entered through the grocery-side doors with a face covering. Of 21 people who were not wearing masks, about half returned to their vehicles. No one was escorted out. The local Walmarts also said they are “working with” police to determine how to proceed should problems arise.

Sheriff says murder suspects likely still in area Couple sought in connection with June 28 incident in South Carolina BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com DIXON – A Sauk Valley couple who investigators said returned home after killing a man and beating a woman in a South Carolina hotel nearly 2 weeks ago are believed to still be hiding in this area, Sheriff John Simonton said on Friday. Jorden E. Johnson, 28, of Sterling, and Latisha Desiree Evans, 20, of Rock Falls, are considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. A task force formed with members of the Lee and Whiteside County sheriffs departments, Sterling, Dixon and Rock Falls police departments and state police, and with input and assistance from federal authorities, is tracking down leads and working with the Lee County state’s attorney to develop strategies to locate the pair, utilizing whatever tools are at hand – talking with family members and known associates, working to

Latisha D. Evans and Jorden E. Johnson obtain search warrants, etc., Simonton said. Tips from the public also are needed. Depending on the circumstances, anyone who might be helping the two hide could be subject to felony charges involving harboring a fugitive, aiding and abetting, and obstruction of justice, Simonton said. Johnson and Evans are charged in Georgetown County Court with murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and grand larceny. The two are accused of killing 66-year-old Jack Kendree Jr. in a Georgetown hotel on June 28. His body was found the morning of the 29th – Johnson’s 28th birthday. Kendree died of blunt force trauma to the head;

a bloody wrench was found in a nearby room at the Rodeway Inn where he was staying. A woman he was with was found critically injured and bleeding outside the room. A Ford Taurus belonging to one of the victims was found east of Harmon; it had been set on fire. Not only are Johnson and Evans natives of Whiteside County, but they also have ties to Lee County and the Quad Cities. Johnson has an extensive felony history, and also is wanted in Whiteside County, where a man was stabbed in an argument after a party on Aug. 17. He is charged with being a felon using or possessing a weapon, punishable by 3 to 7 years in prison, and four counts of aggravated battery, punishable by 2 to 5 years. Johnson is white, 6-toot-2 and 225 pounds, and he has a tattoo on his face; Evans is Black, 5-foot3 and 150 pounds. They may have altered their appearance. People who leave tips on the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line that lead to an arrest and conviction are eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

BRIEFS Upper Mississippi Spring Lake unit is closed SAVANNA – The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge has announced that the Spring Lake Management Unit’s recreation area located off Highway 84 south of Savanna will be closed beginning July 7, in order to continue work on the levee rehabilitation project. This project includes tree removal, earthen levee repair and the placement of 23,000 tons of riprap. Due to the high traffic utilization of heavy equipment the

closure includes the parking area and entire levee system and is expected to extend several months. The Spring Lake Management Unit includes 3,600 acres that is bounded by 12 miles of levee. The levee protects the lower lake area that contains 3,000 acres of Mississippi River backwater and is an important area for fish and wildlife including tens of thousands of waterfowl that gather here annually. The upper lake contains three wetland units that are intensively managed to provide natural foods for wildlife, especially waterbirds.

Mark graduated from Thomson High School in 1997. Mark married Abby Hoch on June 8, 2007 in St. Anne’s Parish, Jamaica. A son, Brody Thomas, was born to their union on Oct. 11, 2010. As years passed,

Mark found his soulmate, Amanda Richeson and her daughter, Olivia and the four became one. Mark was an amazing father, a beloved son, an incredible brother, a wonderful nephew, great cousin, one heck of a fantastic uncle, and a good friend. Mark gained his love of music from his father, Tom and always seemed to have a guitar in his hand. His dog, Marley was never far behind him. Mark and his son were inseparable. They had their own special language and if you were a friend of Mark’s, you definitely understand. You always seemed to catch Mark and Brody making the “Horn Sign” and “The Face.” They also shared a love for playing games, playing baseball, gaming, Cubs games, and mini-vacations. Mark shared

his love of music and sports with his son, Brody and most recently had begun to teach him to play guitar. Mark lovingly referred to his mom Mel and her sisters as the “Golden Girls,” and never let them live a minute of that down. Whiteside County Fair canceled due to pandemic MORRISON — The Whiteside County Fair Board made a difficult decision last week and has canceled the 2020 Whiteside County Fair due to Illinois requirements pertaining to COVID-19. “Illinois’ Phase 5 Restore Illinois Plan specifically addresses fairs and festivals. In order to be able to have a fair, our region must be in Phase 5; currently we are in Phase 4,” the board’s press release said. “The requirements for entering Phase 5 include ‘a vaccine, effectively and widely available treatment, or the elimination of new cases over a sustained period of time through herd immunity or other factors.’ Unfortunately, Illinois is simply not there yet.” The press release said board members held out as long as they could

before making the decision. “We had a genuine hopes of an improvement in the situation that would allow us to hold the 2020 fair in August. Simply put, our ability to have the Fair this year is not possible. We exhausted every avenue we could to try to make it happen this year, but the circumstances do not allow for it,” the release said. “We know many of you will be relieved to hear this, and we know many of you will be upset, and some maybe both. We are very disappointed to have to cancel this year, but the health and safety of the fair goers, exhibitors, vendors, entertainers and volunteers have been our highest priority during this evaluation process. The 2021 fair is scheduled for Aug. 17-21, 2021.

n a few discussions I have had lately with members one thing continues to come up. We are all feeling the effects of what is going on in our world. The mental health of society is certainly being challenged in many ways. If you are feeling the effects of what is not normal even though it is called the “new” normal, know you are not alone. Someone recently mentioned to me how they could not take one more thing they were looking forward to being cancelled. I even mentioned the other day how I miss all the things I used to be able to do for fun. There is help available. If you are feeling the effects, don’t hesitate to look into the resources available for you to get through these times.

July is National Ice Cream month! In order to celebrate we are holding a coloring contest. The color sheets can be found on our website, www.carrollcfb.org; our Facebook page and at our office. Finished color sheets will be due back to us by July 30. A drawing will be held for each age group with a minimum of two winners from each

age group receiving a quart of ice cream! Age groups will be 3-5; 6-8; and 9-11. With the heat we have been having it will be a great way to cool off! It looks like we may finally see some baseball. It’s just is disheartening to know that we will not be able to see the game in person or certainly not at this time, but something is certainly better than nothing. Late teacher honored as ag educator of the year Golden Owl Award recognizes top ag teachers across 5 states DES MOINES, Iowa – Educators devote countless time, and often their own resources, to help students pursue their passions. As the number one insurer of farms and ranches in the United States, Nationwide recently recognized five Illinois teachers as finalists for their 2019-2020 Golden Owl Award. In partnership with the Illinois FFA, the insurer recognized Ed Curry, agriculture teacher at River Ridge High School, who passed away in July 2019, as Illinois’ first Ag Educator of the Year. “Agriculture teachers play such a critical role in preparing the next generation of industry leaders,” said Brad Liggett, Nationwide’s president of Agribusiness. “Nationwide has deep roots in agriculture and we’re honored to be able to recognize the above and beyond efforts of teachers across the country.” Curry was formally recognized as the Golden Owl Award grand prize winner during the virtually held IAVAT Conference on June 18. As Illinois’ Ag Educator of the Year, Curry’s family will receive the coveted Golden Owl Award trophy and $3,000 in funding. “As an agriculture education teacher and FFA

Nationwide initiated the Golden Owl Award in

2018 and recognized the contributions of 17 Iowa and Ohio agricultural teachers. As a result of the positive response from the communities in which Golden Owl Award nominees make a difference, the 2019-2020 Golden Owl Award was expanded from two states to five: California, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio and Pennsylvania. “We’re excited by the growth we’ve seen in participation and nominations since beginning the program in 2018,” said Liggett. “We hope to be able to continue expanding our efforts to recognize the work of teachers in every state.” Nationwide supports the future of the ag community through meaningful sponsorships of national and local organizations. Amanda McCracken, of Dixon, was one of those customers who walked up to the entrance expecting to shop for her elderly father and saw the signs: “Establishment: SuperValu CLOSED by order of the Ogle County Health Department, 7/8/20.”

“I had no idea they were closed,” McCracken said through her mask. “The store is always clean, the staff are friendly. I grew up in Oregon, and my family has been shopping here for years.” She said she was shocked because the store was following all the guidelines to prevent the spread of coronavirus, including requiring employees and customers to wear masks, adding social distancing markers on the floor, and constructing plastic shields at the checkout stations separating cashiers from customers, as state guidelines recommended.

He did so to try to stop customers from approaching his employees as they stocked shelves and performed other duties, Kaufman said. He also set specific hours for “at-risk” customers and started closing earlier to alleviate staff hours. “I am flabbergasted,” McCracken said. “They have the shields, and I always saw most of the customers

wearing masks. I shop here for my grandfather, too. This is where we go when we need something.” Wednesday afternoon, Snyder’s Pharmacy across the street posted this on its Facebook page: “Due to the unfortunate temporary closing of the grocery store in Oregon, our Oregon Pharmacy/Ace Hardware will be carrying bread, buns, milk, eggs, hot dogs, bananas, and possibly other items. Family friend set up parade after dad’s death 10 days ago BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@shawmedia. com ROCK FALLS — Aiden Denning knew something was happening on the street past his Rock Falls home Sunday afternoon—he just didn’t know it would meet his “AWESOME” standard. Aiden tried to watch patiently from his front yard with his mom and other family and friends, as they all waited for something everyone told him to watch for. “What?” he asked as he ran to the curb and back a couple of times. Then he saw it: a line of Rock Falls police squads, sirens blaring, headed toward his house. As his eyes widened, the squads turned onto Third Street and the officers, along with a long line of other friends and family, started wishing him a happy eighth birthday. “It was awesome,” Aiden said, smiling after the drive-by birthday salute. “I didn’t even think it would happen. I didn’t even know what was going on!” The event was planned by family friend Mandy Johnson, also of Rock Falls, who thought Aiden needed a special something this year following the accidental death of his father just 10 days ago. “We just wanted to give him a little boost. It’s rough time for him right now,” Johnson said. Aiden’s dad, Timothy, 34, was killed July 2 while working on a road construction job near Amboy. “I just started this idea on Tuesday and posted it on Facebook. People started sharing it and everyone started showing up,” Johnson said. Johnson organized the line of cars, motorcycles, and dump truck at Merrill School just a few blocks from Aiden’s home. Most participants honked their horns, made signs, and brought gifts. Aiden’s mom, Michelle, was clued in on the event. “I knew, but it was a surprise for Aiden,” Michelle said. “I just want to thank everyone for making this a special day for Aiden.” The parade-portion of the event ended with Aiden releasing eight helium balloons for his dad. “Let this go for Daddy,” Michelle said as they watched one of the balloons lift high into the blue sky.

Everything is really in the hands of the Ogle County Health Department.” Williams said he did not know what criteria the health department uses to determine to close a store. In response to an email asking that question, Ogle County Health Administrator Kyle Auman said only: “OCHD is working to contact trace employees and get households tested. We are not recommending testing for customers unless they are expressing symptoms. BRIEFS Car show in Savanna on July 19

SAVANNA – The Savanna Historical Society will have a “Car Cruise-In” on Sunday, July 19. Car enthusiasts are encouraged to participate. Cars can be parked in the blocked off areas of the 400 block of Main Street or in the 300 block behind Main Street from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no registration fee. Donations will be gratefully accepted and used to continue renovations and programming at the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center. Among those planning to attend are local residents Ron Nemec, who will showcase his 1984 Corvette, Don Nowviock, with his 1931 Model A, and Andy MiIls, with his 2005 Ford GT.
