Falling tree CGH may loosen visitor restrictions strikes, kills rural Fulton woman

kschultz@shawmedia.com FULTON – A 54-year-old Fulton woman died June 17 when part of a large tree fell spontaneously and struck her, Sheriff John Booker said.

Jodi Housenga, a retired Illinois correctional officer, was pronounced dead at 8:51 p.m. at MercyOne Jodi Clinton Medical Center Housenga in Clinton, Iowa.

Housenga was struck around 7:40 p.m. at her home in the 17000 block of Diamond Road, the release said.

No one was working on the tree; part of it simply sheared off and struck her, Booker said.

Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois received a $1,000 grant from the Lee County COVID-19 Response Fund on June 3.

The money will be used for operating costs to provide materials for Virtual Girl Scout Troops and financial assistance for girls residing in Lee County who would like to renew their Girl Scout membership or join Girl Scouts for the first time.

Visitor restrictions at CGH Medical Center in Sterling will loosen up a little toward the end of June or start of July, Chief Nursing Officer Kristie Geil said on June 19.

More information will be announced by June 29, pending recommendations from the Illinois Department of Public Health, “just to assure we’re not getting ahead of the game,” Geil said.

During the hospital’s weekly “Ask Us Anything” Facebook Live program Friday, Geil detailed some of the planned modifications to the visitor policy: Only one visitor per patient will be allowed, and that person will be asked to stay in the room with the patient while visiting. As is happening now, visitors will be screened at the front door for temperature and medical history, and masks will be required.

Visitors are subject to respiratory infection screens and must wear masks.

BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com MORRISON – A Prophetstown woman is charged with reckless conduct and possession of a controlled substance after her toddler ingested cocaine last Wednesday afternoon, and had to be resuscitated.

Elizabeth G. Jackson, 30, was arrested June 18 and faces 1 to 3 years in prison on

each count.

Prophetstown police responded around 1:35 p.m. to the 400 block of Fair Lane on June 17 and found a neighbor performing CPR on an 18-month-old girl, who was outside the apartments and not breathing, according to a release from the department.

Officers took over and were able to establish a pulse, and then handed the toddler to EMTs, who were able to provide more

advanced life-saving treatment.

The child was taken to CGH Medical Center in Sterling, where it was determined she had ingested cocaine.

Her home was searched and Jackson was charged; more charges and arrests are pending, the release said.

Jackson, who was appointed a public defender, has a pretrial hearing June 29.

Whiteside County now has had 172 confirmed cases and 14 COVID-related deaths.

Lee County has had 94 cases, 91 recoveries and one death. Ogle County has had 241 cases, 214 recoveries and four deaths. Car-

roll County has had 21 cases and two deaths.

Statewide there were 658 new cases and 23 additional deaths. Illinois has had 136,762 positive cases and 6,647 COVID-related deaths.

Sterling has had 939 total tests conducted and 85 positive cases. Rock Falls has had 473 tests and 40 positive cases. Dixon has had 1,410 tests and 89 cases. Rochelle has had 1,418 tests and 147 positive cases.

OBITUARIES JANNA K. KLUCK LORAN – Janna Kay Kluck, 73, of Loran, IL passed away June 15, 2020 surrounded by her family at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin after a battle with cancer.

She was born June 3, 1947 in Whiteside County, the daughter of Alex and Harriet (Schaver) Haan.

On Dec. 20, 1970, she married Delbert Kluck in Lanark at her parents’ home.

Delbert passed away Dec. 25, 2017.

Janna was a 1965 graduate of Lanark High School.

She was employed at Crum and Forstor, Newell Window Furnishing, Royal and Son Alliance and retired from Sentry Insurance.

She was a member of Pearl City United Methodist Church. Janna was a lifetime member of the Women of the Moose Lodge 548 and Legion of the Moose No. 57.

Janna was also a charter member of the Stephenson County Antique Engine

House Historic Site, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, where a person also can enjoy Iowa’s oldest building, the Humke School House from Centralia and a historic granary.

The American Lady Tour Boat will begin at 3 p.m. for a Happy Hour cruise on the Mississippi River. As a Happy Hour Cruise, participants will receive free unlimited light beer, soda, lemonade, tea and buffa-

lo or barbeque style chicken wings.

During the cruise we will be looking for bald eagles that are nesting near the river and will be seeing other waterfowl and wildlife that live on or near the river. The tour should return by 5 p.m., so people can get home the same day.

This event is open to the public.

The cost for the full day is $70 for adults, $68 for seniors, and $60 for a child over 3 years. This includes

all entry fees. Organizers need to receive this registration fee before July 4, so they can be sure to have your seat reserved on the boat.

It should be a very enjoyable and educational day for the whole family.

Club. She loved seeing her kids and grandkids parading their tractors and spending the whole weekend in the campground at the annual Threshing and Antique show.

She loved playing piano, especially on her mother’s piano.

Janna also enjoyed taking rides through the countryside and attending plays at the Timber Lake Playhouse.

She was known for her lasagna that she would always make on Good Friday and for brunch on Christmas morning.

Family was most important to Janna, and she was the biggest fan of her grandsons’ sporting events that included football, basketball, and baseball.

She also enjoyed catching up with family at the Haan Kid Family Fun Night, and at the Haan and Schaver family reunions.

She looked forward to monthly retiree luncheons.

She enjoyed reading and had a love of chickens.

Surviving are her two sons, Justin (Tina) Kluck and Nathan (Melissa) Kluck; daughter, Sarah Kluck; brother, Alvin (Kim) Haan; sister, Paulette (Dan) Stit-

zel; and five grandsons, Howie Kluck, Dustin Kluck, Alexzander McDearmon, Zackarey McDearmon and Seth (Aja) Mekeel.

Preceding Janna in death is her husband, Delbert; son, Christopher Lee Kluck; her parents; and brother Leon Haan.

Private services were Saturday, June 20, at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. Burial was at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

A memorial has been established in her memory.

Owner says closure caused by COVID-19 shutdown

BY CODY CUTTER ccutter@saukvalley.com PROPHETSTOWN – The Eureka Inn restaurant, housed in an historic 1843 building, will close June 30.

Joe and Cheryl Waite, who have owned the eatery at 110 E. Third St. since 1988, cited the recent COVID19 economic downturn as a factor in its closing.

“Just no business,” Cheryl Waite said. “Not having customers coming in, we can only do the carryout thing. We can make all this food, but have no one come in to eat.

“I thought about it long and hard, and after 31-and-a-half years of dedicating your life to people, it’s really sad not to have to wait on them anymore. It’s just what it’s come to.”

Had coronavirus and the resulting social distancing guidelines not

been the case, the restaurant would have remained open, she said.

“It’s just destroying our small, little towns.”

The restaurant is open for carryout from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and plans to reopen its dining room – for a few final days – on June 26 with the same hours, when Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois plan to open businesses is slated to begin.

The building’s history goes back to 1842 when it was in Portland, a small village a couple of miles west of town along a stagecoach trail.

When the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad built its tracks through Prophetstown a few decades later, Portland’s prosperity dwindled and business gravitated toward Prophetstown.

The two-story building was moved from Portland and reopened as the Eureka Hotel on Dec. 25, 1872, by M.V. Seely, who ran the Rock River House hotel downtown until it burned.

The Eureka hosted its last guests Sept. 24, 1941.

Blending art, business and respect for the planet Johnson Creek is located in Chadwick

BY PHILLIP HARTMAN phartman@saukvalley.com CHADWICK – When a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Yes it does, and it sounds like opportunity knocking.

Just ask a rural Chadwick couple who found a silver lining in the storm clouds that opened the door to what would grow to become a successful lumber business, and an extension of their belief that giving back to the planet should come naturally.

The husband-and-wife team behind Johnson Creek Hardwoods, Michael and Patricia Johnson, bring artistic sensibilities to their lumber business.

Michael is a fine art landscape photographer who admires the likes of Ansel Adams and other artists, and Patricia writes about their family and gardens.

Many of their customers are fellow artists, too, who use the lumber the Johnsons supply to create their own works of art.

“One of the most fascinating things is all the fantastic woodworkers we’ve met,” Patricia said.

Visitors to the Johnsons’ home at 6480 Daggert Road west of Chadwick may find themselves greeted by Roxie, the family’s dog.

Inside, the home features photographs by Michael and other artists, as well as a coffee table made by a customer, and other items made from wood processed at the mill.

Michael, 70, grew up about 40 miles northwest of Chicago, and followed his interest in art to Shimer College decades ago when it was still at the Mount Carroll campus.

“My aesthetic is more 17th-century Dutch and Flemish,” Michael said.

He found that the Driftless Area of the upper Midwest fits his aesthetic.

The region, located in parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois, including Carroll County, escaped glaciers’ flattening effects during the Ice Age and features steep, forested ridges and deep river valleys.

In 1973, he bought 40 acres of timber on Daggert Road and started building a house there. A short time later, he met Patricia and they married in 1974.

The couple developed a deep interest in stewardship of the natural world, and began planting trees and studying sustainable forestry.

Johnson strives to produce high-quality lumber from locally sourced trees.

They started their lumber business in 1996, after a storm snapped off 50 to 60 trees.

“We could either call loggers or do it ourselves,” Michael said of the cleanup.

The Johnsons built a kiln and a small mill, and their lumber business grew from there. Today, they have about 24 types of trees on 70 acres, with about 16 to 20 types for sale.

Michael said they’ve planted about 30,000 to 40,000 trees since they moved in, though none of them are available yet for harvesting.

“We don’t know what will be valuable in 80 years. Our first thing is stewardship, with the second being diversity,” Michael said.

The Johnsons have planted a wide variety of tree species, among them Southern trees such as tulip poplar, Shumard oak, Kentucky coffee trees, and some sycamores.

Of the trees the Johnsons do harvest, they currently have a large amount of ash due to the number of trees killed by the emerald ash borer.

They also have cherry, white oak, walnut and other species.

The Johnsons divide their labor.

BY CODY CUTTER ccutter@saukvalley.com In a world where social distancing makes it hard for movie theaters to function, a happy ending may be in sight.

Closed since mid-March, when the COVID-19 virus started to spread throughout Illinois, the Sauk Valley’s three indoor theaters each have plans to reopen.

The downtown Sterling Theater will reopen when Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois plan takes effect on June 26, manager Lori VanOosten said.

The movie screens are silent, but the theater’s popcorn machines have been poppin’ for a couple of hours every Friday. Curbside sales are helping the theater pay its small bills during the closure, VanOosten said.

Ultimately, social distancing and sanitation guidelines must be laid out by the state and the Illinois Department of Public Health before theaters can reopen. VanOosten hasn’t heard anything yet on how to proceed, and it may take a couple of days after she gets notice of the guidelines to make the theater meets all requirements.

“If all goes well and we can open on the 26th, we are going to try to open if everything falls into place,” she said.

For the first time since the downtown theater reopened, it will have assigned seating – tickets will have a seat number listed. Online purchases will be encouraged, not only to limit person-to-person contact, but also so moviegoers can choose where they want to sit.

Families can sit together, but the ticket system automatically will choose a seat for the next buyer that’s at least 6 feet away. Every other row will be empty and masks will be required.

AMC, which owns a theater in at 4110 30th St. on Sterling’s east end, will reopen its theaters in phases starting July 15, the company said

Its seating areas will be reduced to a maximum 30% capacity, masks will be required, and every other row will be blocked off. A limited concession menu will be offered; no refills of popcorn and soft drinks will be given. Napkins, lids, straws and condiments will be available by request.

Extra time will be made between movies for cleaning of seating areas.

Times Theater The Times Theater in Savanna plans to open on or slightly before July 31, owner Katy Colgan said.

The Times has been in business for more than 75 years.

when we were forced to close,” Colgan said. “We are reopening, but we need to get some precautions in place.”

Midway Drive-In The Midway Drive-In east of Sterling reopened May 22. Drive-ins do not have as many social distancing complications as indoor theaters, and were permitted to open during Phase 3.

The Midway will conclude a monthlong showing of Steven Spielberg films on Saturday.

Tickets for Midway films and events are available only online at themidwaydrivein.net.

A $10 food permit is required for each vehicles on top of individual ticket prices; that allows moviegoers to bring their own food and drink while the facility’s concession

stand is closed.

The Midway also plans to bring back horror film actor Bruce Campbell on July 10 and 11 for a showing of the “Evil Dead” trilogy, as part of Chicago Horror Con’s Flashback Weekend.

“Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn” and “Army of Darkness” will be shown July 10.

A 4K restoration of Sam Raimi’s original “Evil Dead,” and two other films, Lucio Fulci’s “The Beyond” and “I Drink Your Blood,” are slated for the 11th.

Vehicles will be allowed to occupy two spaces and only 250 will be allowed.

There will be a question-and-answer session with Campbell before each showing, and VIP tickets for socially distanced photos with Campbell will be available.

Retiring in vintage style: The Caroline Mark Home

BY PHILLIP HARTMAN phartman@saukvalley.com MOUNT CARROLL – In many ways, Caroline Mark was a woman ahead of her time.

During the 1800s, the widow grew her estate from $90,000 to $600,000 through banking and farm investments after her husband, James, died crossing a river.

While being a savvy businesswoman during a time when women weren’t even allowed to vote was impressive enough, it was her generosity that left the longest lasting legacy.

Upon her death in 1900, she willed three-quarters of her estate to create a home for low-income senior women in the Carroll County area.

The Caroline Mark Home was established in 1906 on 5 acres of land and took in its first resident in 1908.

More than 110 years later, the home continues to provide a home for older women who aren’t ready for assisted living.

The home was built specifically to meet the needs of low-income women. It can house up to 18 women; nine currently live there.

One of those women is Ruth Barr,

75, formerly of Dakota. She moved to the Mark Home after a heart attack ended her work as a school bus driver.

While Barr found it hard to leave her own home at first, she’s come to enjoy the Mark Home.

“It’s an awesome place. The food and the people are wonderful,” Barr said.

Like Barr, other women don’t have to be retired to live at the Mark Home. Any woman who meets an asset cap, who can take care of herself, and who has lived for 6 or more months in Carroll or an adjoining county, can stay at the home for free. Public donations are accepted to help with costs.

One retiree at the home, Cathy Musser, 66, is formerly of Stockton.

She moved to the Mark Home more than a year ago after she gave her son her home, so he and his family could live in a lead-free environment. “It’s starting to feel more like home. I take part in a game night once a month here, and I’ve been doing a little volunteer work for Extension,� Musser said.

The sense of community at the Mark Home is part of why Joyce Schubert, 85, enjoys living there.

She moved to the facility 7 years ago from Lanark, after her second husband died. “I do not want to live alone. I love it here. It took about a year, but it really feels like home. We have free-

dom to come and go, and the meals are good,� Schubert said.

She stays active as a member of the Carroll County Senior Center board, and attends a Bible study.

The Mark Home may not be for everyone. Pets aren’t allowed, and bathrooms are communal. But a staff of six care for the grounds and provide meals, with a buffet breakfast, a full meal for lunch and leftovers for supper. Laundry facilities are available on the first floor, with more accessibility than when the home opened in the 1900s. “When the home started, the ladies were allowed 12 pieces of laundry a week, not counting their linens,�

Kelley said.

Another attraction is the facility itself, which retains many historical features and amenities. A screenedin porch offers a view of the woods.

All of these features, and more, led to the Mark Home being placed on the National Historic Register in 1983. “It was built to last, with iron, steel, brick and concrete,� Kelley said.

TLP Mount Carroll has online classes MOUNT CARROLL – Timber Lake Playhouse has announced its Summer Education program with online and on site offerings for ages 3 through adult.

Michael said his experience in the lumber business comes from reading, making mistakes, and reading more.

Johnson Creek Hardwoods keeps a selection of boards, bookmatched tops (sawing the wood so two pieces match, like an open book), and live edge lumber (in which the rough edge of the lumber, sometimes bark and all, is kept) on hand.

The Johnsons will open by appointment for customers to view their stock. They also process yard and town trees for customers.

According to their website, the Johnsons try to match the species and kind of wood they harvest for specific needs.

They trim knots, splits and other flaws from butt logs, or logs from the tree’s base, and trim sapwood from cherry and walnut to get at least one clear heartwood side from the logs.

Part of the Johnsons’ secret is air drying logs, down to between 20 to 25% equalized moisture content. The wood is then kiln dries to between 6 and 8%.

The wild weather of the last couple years hasn’t been lost on Michael.

“This has been the wettest 18 months I’ve ever lived through. The main challenge with the moisture is getting out into the timber and

working. Also, usually you have storms that break the trees off. Lately, they’ve been coming out of the ground by the roots because the ground is just kind of like soup,” he said.

Once the wood is dried, the Johnsons surface it with a 24-inch planer to a uniform thickness and smoothness. They also trim the ends to eliminate splits before it’s placed in the boardroom for sale.

One feature that sets Johnson Creek Hardwoods apart is that they don’t sell overseas, ship wood, or deliver wood. Customers have to come get their wood and choose it themselves, and often travel long distances. Michael said they get customers from Peoria, Chicago, and

Madison, Wisconsin.

When they’re not busy with lumber, the Johnsons grow vegetables and flowers, manage an heirloom apple orchard, and help their son and daughter-in-law, Ben Johnson and Molly McDonough, with their restaurant, Molly’s Kitchen & Bar in Mount Carroll.

“I also own the building where Molly’s is located, and run a couple of bed and breakfast rooms, called The Inn at Molly’s,” Michael said.

Oregon BLM march draws nearly 300 people Local man speaks to crowd gathered around courthouse

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Oregon’s Erik Walton made sure the hundreds of marchers who took part in a Black Lives Matter march in Oregon on June 12 knew who and what they were marching for.

Walton took the microphone after the peaceful march around the Ogle County Courthouse Square and told the crowd what it is like to be profiled by police for being a black man.

“Growing up, have I been profiled by the police? Yes, I have,” Walton said. “Have I had the police pull a gun on me? Yes, I have. And I wasn’t doing anything wrong. He just said because of how tall I am, that he wasn’t going to wrestle me. He was going to pop two in me.”

More than 300 people gathered for the march at Oregon’s United Methodist Church before marching around the Ogle County Courthouse and back. Almost all of those attending the rally wore face masks.

Marches and protests have swept the country since the death of George Floyd, a black Minneapolis man that was killed while in police custody on Memorial Day. Megan Babler, of Mt. Morris, and Olivia Stafford and Mady Russell, both of Oregon, were the organizers of the march. They didn’t expect the turnout they got, and figured it would just be a gathering of “a few friends.”

men were heard claiming they were there to protect the monument. Some of them embraced marchers as they walked by.

The dissenters did stand blocking a portion of the sidewalk marchers were walking on.

They’d occasionally yell back “all lives matter” and protesters chanted “black lives matter.”

They did stop a man carrying an upside down American flag for a short confrontation before letting him pass.

Scott Shepherd of Grand Detour was the man carrying the flag, and had his meaning of it inscribed on the flag pole.

“This is the international signal for a ship in distress,” Shepherd said. “Many Marines have come up to me and said, ‘That’s exactly how you should be hanging the flag right now.’ I came out to support black Americans.

Because we’re all Americans.”

Another man arrived shortly thereafter and argued briefly with the men at the veteran’s memorial, before Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville arrived and spoke to them. That was the only police involvement in Friday’s march.

The organizers held a sale to raise money for BLM causes and distributed pamphlets containing information on “what to do after the protest.” The pamphlet gave lists of BLM causes to donate to as well as a reading list, a movie watch list and a list of blackowned businesses near Oregon.

Oregon High School Dean of Students Shannon Cremeens attended the march in an unofficial capacity and helped with the sale. Cremeens said she wanted to support former students who were planning and attending the event.

Cremeens also talked about the school district’s plans to form an equity group.

“It will address issues of equity, celebrating diversity, cultural competency and not just the idea of racism and diversity,” Cremeens said. “How do we celebrate being different? How do we make sure all of our special populations have an equal shot at things?”

After returning to the church, the marchers held a moment of silence for 8:46 in honor of Floyd.

That amount of time symbolizes how long the Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd’s neck for before he died.

“If that 8:46 infuriated you, it should have,” Stafford said.

Illinois reports 23 more deaths, 658 new cases Sunday

Across Illinois, an additional 23 people died from COVID-19 and 658 people tested positive for COVID-19, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced Sunday.

Illinois now has seen 136,762 cases of the virus and 6,647 people have died since the pandemic began. A total of 1,360,784 people have been tested.

More than 23,000 people were tested in the previous 24 hours. The state’s seven-day positivity rate is at 2%.

As of late Saturday night, Illinois had 1,631 COVID-19 patients in the hospital. Of those currently hospitalized, 422 were in the ICU and 256 were on ventilators.

Regional update: As of Saturday, the Northeast region (Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, McHenry, Lake and Will counties) reported a positivity rate average of 5%. The region reported an average of 34% of medical/surgical beds available, 43% of ICU beds available and 73% of ventilators available.

Threshold to move into Phase 4: In order to move into Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois plan, each of the state’s health regions must ensure that testing is available in the region regardless of symptoms or risk factors.

Testing also needed to be made available to the residents and staff of congregate living facilities, according to the plan. A system for COVID-19 contact tracing and monitoring must be in place and able to respond 24 hours after diagnosis.

In addition to these requirements, each region must report an average positivity rate of 20% or lower, increasing no more than 10 percentage points over a 14-day period.

Regions also must report no overall increase in hospital admissions for COVID-19 for a period of 28 days, meaning hospitalizations must decrease or remain stable.

Finally, each region must prove available surge capacity of at least 14% of ICU beds, medical/surgical beds and ventilators.

Contact tracing and monitoring within 24 hours of diagnosis for more than 90% of cases in region must be met in order to advance to Phase 4.

Is Marijuana a Gateway Drug?

Contributed by: Carroll County Substance Education Coalition Some research suggests that marijuana use is likely to precede use of other licit and illicit substances, and the development of addiction to other substances. For instance, a study using longitudinal data from the National Epidemiological Study of Alcohol Use and Related Disorders found that adults who reported marijuana use during the first wave of the survey were more likely than adults who did not use marijuana to develop an alcohol use disorder within three years; people who used marijuana and already had an alcohol use disorder at the outset were at greater risk of their alcohol use disorder worsening. Marijuana use is also linked to other substance use disorders including nicotine addiction.

Early exposure to cannabinoids in adolescent rodents decreases the reactivity of brain dopamine reward centers later in adulthood. To the extent that these findings generalize to humans, this could help explain the increased vulnerability for addiction to other substances of misuse later in life that most epidemiological studies have reported for people who begin marijuana use early in life. It is also consistent with animal experiments showing THC’s ability to “prime” the brain for enhanced responses to other drugs. For example, rats previously administered THC show heightened behavioral response not only when further exposed to THC but also when exposed to other drugs such as morphine—a phenomenon called cross-sensitization.

These findings are consistent with the idea of marijuana as a “gateway drug.” Also, cross-sensitization is not unique to marijuana. Alcohol and nicotine also prime the brain for a heightened response to other drugs and are, like marijuana, typically used before a person progresses to other, more harmful substances.

It is important to note that other factors besides biological mechanisms, such as a person’s social environment, are also critical in a person’s risk for drug use. An alternative to the gateway-drug hypothesis is that people who are more vulnerable to drug-taking are simply more likely to start with readily available substances such as marijuana, tobacco, or alcohol, and their subsequent social interactions with others who use drugs increases their chances of trying other drugs.

Further research is needed to explore this question.
