More COVID-19 cases reported in area counties Quick count: 71 total Whiteside: 27; Lee: 12; Ogle: 22 Carroll: 5 ; Bureau: 5 STAFF REPORT - SHAW MEDIA The area COVID-19 case tally reached 71 Saturday with the announcement of nine new local cases.

Ogle County Health Department reported five additional cases of COVID-19 Saturday afternoon.

One person is in their teens, two are in their 30s and one each in their 60s and 70s, the department said in a news release.

Ogle now has 22 cases. Its first was reported on March 30, and every other case has come in the past nine days.

“This case reinforces the importance of actions the public can take to protect themselves and prevent the spread in the community,” the health

department said in the release.

Whiteside County Health Department announced one additional COVID-19 case: an individual in their 70s. That brings Whiteside’s total to 27.

Social distancing is the community’s greatest weapon against the spread of COVID-19, the

Whiteside health department said in the release.

It recommends no gatherings with friends and family for Easter, and that includes religious gatherings and holiday community events.

“Even if you do not have symptoms, you could be a carrier for COVID-19 and infect vulnerable individuals who could experience serious health complications or death,” the health department said. “For Whiteside County to continue to keep cases low, we need to continue our efforts to social distance, working together to stay physically apart and emotionally connected.”

Bureau and Carroll counties each have five cases, and had no new cases as of Saturday.

Lee County reached 12 cases after three additional cases were announced Saturday.

The three cases announced by the Lee County Health Department are two people in their 60s and one in his or her 30s, it said in a news release.

The totals are not indicative of the actual number of people infected, since so few people are being tested, the health departments said.

But a city council meeting would mean elected officials, staff and any residents who wanted to follow their local governments would have to leave the house, potentially opening themselves up for exposure to the virus.

So on the day he issued his stay-at-home order, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker also included in that executive order a provision that suspended parts of the Open Meetings Act. That allowed members of city councils and planning commissions and library boards and other public governing bodies a chance to meet without meeting in person.

during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project is being initiated for the benefit of future generations.

He also reported 43 deaths from the disease, the lowest daily total in the past six days.

“I pray as we move forward that these trends continue,” he said. “And if they do, it will be because of all of you, adhering to our stay-at-home order. Doctors and experts confirm the fact that, Illinois, having been the second state to announce a stay-athome order, now seems to be reaching a peaking terminal term and our hopes have been coming to fruition.”

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported that 7,956 COVID-19 tests had been conducted over the previous 24 hours, the highest daily number so far, but still short of the stated goal of 10,000 tests per day.

There have now been more than 100,000 tests performed in Illinois, with a total of 20,852 confirmed cases and 720 fatalities.

Pritzker cautioned, however, that it was still too early to say whether the outbreak had peaked.

“What I look for is a leveling because the numbers had been going up exponentially,” Pritzker said. “And then they were going up arithmetically.”

Responding to questions from reporters, Pritzker said the stay-athome order will remain in place until there is a significant drop in the number of active cases and hospitalizations. Even then, he said, the state will

“So I’m talking to industry leaders about that. I’m talking to economists about that,” he said. “I’m also very importantly listening to the scientists and the doctors to make sure that we do this right because what we don’t want … is to begin to open things up, and then have a big spike in infections, and you know unfortunately all the spikes that come with that including a spike of deaths. So we want to make sure we’re not doing that while we’re also looking at how we can get people back to work.”

Pritzker also said that while there were many things he’d hoped to accomplish legislatively this year, most of them are likely to be put off until next year. The Legislature has not been in session since March 5, and its return date is uncertain.

The first confirmed case of COVID19 in Illinois was reported in Chicago on Jan. 24. The first confirmed case outside of Cook County was reported on March 11. The stay-at-home order has been in effect since March 16.

“We had Easter décor up, two bunnies visit, many family window visits and Easter baskets were delivered to every resident,” said Karla Burn, marketing director. “Residents were also able to watch or listen to their choice of church service.

Burn said Resthave staff donated most of the items for the Easter baskets and Resthave donated the rest.

“Elaine Hand was our Easter Bunny who visited residents outside their windows on Saturday with her sister Jeanne Ridley. Toby Troutman was our Easter Bunny that surprised residents with their Easter baskets,” Burn said. “Resident’s exclaimed ‘All of this is for me!?’, ‘Wow! I don’t deserve this!’ and ‘Oh my!

“Our first measure was to try to find the right software that would fit our needs,” Shumard said. “We did quite a bit of searching to pick out which program. While we are using Zoom, we’re using a paid version and we opted to go with the webinar format. It’s a little bit different from what most people are used to using, but it acts about the same.”

One of the concerns was allowing members of the public to comment as they would in a council meeting under normal circumstances without disrupting things with an unmuted microphone. Other groups

meeting via Zoom have encountered other issues, like pranksters interjecting inappropriate content.

Sterling made a few dry runs to make sure members of the council and various boards were comfortable with using the software. The city also is making accommodations for citizens who aren’t, with Mayor Skip Lee sitting in council chambers during meetings in case any residents want to come in.

“The governance of the city is still very much a public matter,” Shumard said. “We wanted to keep ourselves as open as possible, so we wanted to have that ability for anyone to participate for free online or also provide the opportunity that we left the council chambers open.”

Sterling started going to online meetings last week, with a planning

commission meeting. There were a pair of meetings online on Monday, including the City Council, and a Thursday meeting of the Liquor Commission.

Other than a few small hiccups with one user having an audio issue and some connection issues, the meetings have gone fairly smoothly.

Not everyone is taking things online. Over in Rock Falls, the City Council held its April 7 meeting in person while keeping everyone spaced 6 feet apart. The council did pack as much into the meeting as it could in order to get as much business done as possible in case subsequent meetings must be canceled.

Morrison is also holding meetings in person, but to ensure everyone is keeping a safe social distance, the meetings have been moved to the

larger Community Room.

“We’ve arranged the tables and measured off our proper social distancing,” Morrison City Administrator Barry Dykhuizen said. “We are planning on setting up, not Zoom because we are old-fashioned, but we do use Go To Meetings.

“We will have an option for the aldermen to join electronically, but the last meeting where we had that option, most chose to meet in person.”

In Sterling, there was no question once the state issued the stayat-home order, all meetings would move online, Shumard said “We really wanted to keep to the spirit of the guidelines and make sure everyone could do this without intermingling.”

Art Johnson, owner of 80 stations, dies at 94 Patriarch opened the family business in 1959 and bought his first Shell station a few years later in Amboy

BY CODY CUTTER Shaw Media STERLING – Arthur J. Johnson, known as “Mr. Johnson” to his employees, associates and customers at Johnson Oil Shell and BP gas stations for more than 60 years, died April 7 at his home. He was 94.

Johnson opened his family business in 1959 selling heating oil, and bought his first Shell gas station a few years later in Amboy.

The company grew to 80 locations throughout northern Illinois and eastern Iowa, including Shell stations in Rock Falls – his longtime headquarters – Sterling, Dixon, Morrison, Fulton, Lanark, Polo, Mt. Morris, Grand Detour, Oregon, Albany, Hillsdale, Princeton, Walnut, LaSalle-Peru, Mendota, Oglesby Utica, Ottawa, Morris and Marengo.

Since 1969, Johnson Oil has been rewarded by Shell each year with a vacation prize for being one of the company’s top jobbers.

Johnson Oil also gives back to many local functions: Johnson was a chairman of United Way campaigns, and he was the sinner of the Rock Falls Chamber of Commerce’s 1993 Shoulder to the Wheel Award, which recognizes individuals and organizations that have made a difference in the community.

“We want to be involved,” Johnson told Sauk Valley Media in September, in a story about his company’s 60th anniversary. “Schools, chambers, city functions; each town is really a neighborhood business, and we’re a venue we can offer to that neighborhood. We want to be part of it.”

Two killed in April 11 accident north of Fulton FULTON – Two Savanna residents are dead and another injured after a single-vehicle crash at 7:54 p.m. Saturday on state Route 84 north of Fulton.

Robert M. Robinson, 50, of Savanna, was northbound on 84, north of 10th Avenue when he lost control of his pickup, skidded into the east ditch and struck a tree, the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department

said in a news release.

Robinson and his passenger, Paul H. Yarolem, 56, died at the scene.

Debra S. Robinson, 47, was taken to MercyOne Clinton Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa.

Her status wasn’t available Monday morning.

Mayfest in a holding pattern in Mount Carroll

BY ERIC INGLES SHAW MEDIA MOUNT CARROLL – Mayfest was brought back from an absence last year to once again entertain crowds in Carroll County on Memorial Day weekend.

The 2020 edition of Mayfest is in a holding pattern.

“Currently, we’re planning for alternate dates, but we’re not canceling for Memorial Day weekend,” organizer Brandon Ballard said.

curve we’re on and how far it’s going to go.”

There are options to push things back to Independence Day or Labor Day weekend, although there still is hope things will have abated by May 22, when Mayfest is scheduled.

After a hiatus in 2018, the festival returned in 2019 with music, a Civil War reenactment, a 5K race and arts and crafts vendors.

“The town of Mount Carroll knows how to come together. They know how to gather,” Ballard said. “I just have to set the table for them.

“The biggest thing is just resources. We started last year, we didn’t have anything. We raised everything

and had a great year last year and we turned a profit. We have a little bit of a cushion, whereas if this had gone down last year, it would have been a lot worse.”

Helping things for the organizers is that everyone is in the same situation. Bands and vendors know organizers are facing a lot of uncertainty, and are offering some flexibility in case things need to be rescheduled.

“Some of the bands are available Fourth of July, some are available Labor Day,” Ballard said. “We’ll all just have to take that information, but it in the calculations and make a decision on whether we roll Memorial Day or push it out.”

Popular 5K run cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic

BY CODY CUTTER Shaw Media DIXON – This year’s Reagan Run has come to a halt after the ongoing COVID-19 health scare chased off preparations for the popular 5K event.

Organizers of the Run announced Saturday morning on its Facebook page, at Reagan Run 5K, that the July 4 event is canceled, and “can’t in good conscience proceed.”

“The COVID-19 global pandemic has impacted everyone in ways no living person has ever experienced,” organizers said in a news release on

Last year’s Run attracted more than 1,200 runners throughout the nation.

Efforts will start in January to operate next year’s run, on July 3.

Mount Carroll already has a huge Independence Day celebration just down the street from Mayfest’s location at the former Shimer College, so if Mayfest had to be rescheduled, it could piggyback off the Fourth of July events.

The stay-at-home order and the uncertainty surrounding what life will look like even next month cuts into what would normally be prime planning time for a festival.

“It’s definitely shifted gears, but for lack of a better term, the show goes on,” Ballard said. “We’ll do it with the resources we have, and it will be as big or as small as we can make it.”

West Carroll baseball players have their best moment of season

This season was supposed to be meaningful for senior Derek Tracy, who will take his baseball talents across the Mississippi River to the University of Dubuque next year.

Tracy dressed up in his uniform and No. 12 took the field for the first time in a long time.

“I’m going to play baseball next year, and this my sport,” he said. “It was kind of lackluster in football, so to speak, and we were really excited to come out and play baseball, try to take the conference [championship], and just be here with my teammates to see the lights come on for the first time.”

While most schools will flick on the lights to their football fields, West Carroll baseball coach Scott Glazier had a better idea. After all, it’s his season that’s feeling the effects of the coronavirus epidemic.

“They’re bummed out,” Mitch said. “They want to hopefully try to get through all this stuff, and start up again hopefully to get to play some ball before the year is over.”

At 8:20 p.m., the diamond was lit and the grass turned a little greener. Why 8:20? It’s the first hour of full darkness, and it’s 20:20 in military time.

This week was supposed to be the team’s spring break trip to Memphis, where they would have added four more games for 16 total. Instead, baseball memories were made closer to home.

For 20 minutes, some of the players had their best moment of their season. Keeping 6 feet apart as best they could, dings from an aluminum bat echoed through the Thomson night, and laughs did, too, when simple tosses were swung at and missed.

The news of the season’s delay was shocking to Tracy and his teammates, and the Illinois High School Association’s decision on the fate of all spring sports is yet to come.

However, in the past couple of weeks he’s tried to ease the pain.

“I miss it a lot less knowing that I have more coming up,” Tracy said. “I still hit every day and throw with my brothers.”

Also taking in the moment was sophomore Aspen Eizenga, whose softball season also is put on hold.

“It’s weird not being able to go to school or play softball,” she said. “This makes me miss it a lot.”

As the final minute under the lights approached, the team grouped up – staying 6 feet apart as much as possible – one more time to make their way to center field and through a gate, with hopes for more baseball memories and time together to come soon.

Glazier went another direction, to the electrical room to turn a knob at 8:40 with hopes that baseball will be played again soon in Thomson. “It’s crazy,” he said. “In a two-week time period (coronavirus) went from not really being talked about at all to [this].”
