LANARK – Eastland school officials have announced tentative alternate dates for end-of-school activities, including high school graduation.

Graduation, tentatively scheduled for May 17, may be moved to June 21 or July 19 if the COVID-19 situation eases.

High school prom has been set for June 27, but may be rescheduled for July 25 if need be.

Baccalaureate is May 10, with alternate dates of June 18 or July 16.

Senior awards night is May 8, with June 15 or July 9 as alternates.

Eighteen cases have been reported in Whiteside County

BY CODY CUTTER Shaw Media The greater Sauk Valley area now has 36 confirmed cases of coronavirus, local health officials said on Sunday afternoon.

Ogle County Health Department reported four additional cases of COVID-19; the new four people are in their 40s, 30s and 20s.

Ogle confirmed its fifth positive case Saturday afternoon, a person in his or her 20s. The third and fourth cases were reported April 3 afternoon and included a child younger than 10, its health department reported.

Ogle’s tally sits at nine, which is half of Whiteside’s 18.

Whiteside County Health Department announced one additional case Sunday, a person in his or her 20s.

The health department announced three new cases Saturday evening,

of people in their 50s, 60s and 70s.

Four people have recovered; one person in his or her 90s died last week.

Carroll County currently has four

cases, and is where the only other local death occurred, also last week.

Lee County confirmations stand at two and Bureau at three.

Those numbers are by no means indicative of the actual number of people infected, since so few people are being tested.

No other patient information is being released by any local health department, for privacy’s sake. Officials have said they are reluctant to release the sex or hometowns of those involved, for fear people in close-knit rural communities will be able to suss out their identities.

Statewide, 899 new cases were reported, bringing that total to 11,256. The death count increased Sunday by 31, to 274. Cases topped 10,000 Saturday, with 1,453 additional cases and 33 deaths.

The age of those infected ranges from younger than 1 to older than 100.

NEW YORK — A tiger at the Bronx Zoo has tested positive for the new coronavirus, in what is believed to be the first known infection in an animal in the U.S. or a tiger anywhere, federal officials and the zoo said Sunday.

The 4-year-old Malayan tiger named Nadia — and six other tigers and lions that have also fallen ill — are believed to have been infected by a zoo employee who wasn’t yet showing symptoms, the zoo said. The first animal started showing symptoms March 27, and all are doing well and expected to recover, said the zoo, which has been closed to the public since March 16 amid the surging coronavirus outbreak in New York.

The test result stunned zoo officials: “I couldn’t believe it,” director Jim Breheny said. But he hopes the finding can contribute to the global fight against the virus that causes COVID-19.

OBITUARIES DENVER C. TRAUM LANARK – Denver Sr and Ida (Krauss) Traum gave birth to Denver Conrad Traum on October 26, 1932 in Lanark.

The parents moved around a little bit before settling down east and south of Milledgeville.

It was here that his love for horses began to grow. As a young boy, he walked behind a team of horses pulling a section drag over a planted cornfield.

As he grew, he also loved riding horses. One particular instance, he bought a neighbor’s horse that was just a little on the “wild” side.

His dad asked him, “Why did you buy that thing” Denver just shrugged his shoulders. It wasn’t long after that he had that horse trained to race cars. He would be riding in the pasture, when a car would come down the road, then race was on.

Denver graduated from Milledgeville High School in 1950. He continued working on the family farm until he volunteered for a 2 year stint in the Army from 1953-1955. It was in Detroit, Michigan that he met his soon to be wife Marlene Miracle.

After being discharged, they traveled back to her home town in Wellington, Kansas where he worked for the water department for a short time. His love was farming though, and since Marlene was a city girl he explained to her what farming was about and she thought it would be alright to become a farmer’s wife.

They moved back to Milledgeville and were married at the little brown church in Nashua, Iowa November 16, 1956.

They rented a farm northwest of Mount Carroll, IL and farmed it with a team of mules few tractors. It was here in 1957 that Marlene gave birth to a daughter, Cindy Jo on Sept. 1.

After 3 years, an opportunity opened up on a 400 acre plus dairy farm northeast of Milledgeville. He literally worked his tail off for 3 years milking 60 head of cows and farming the land.

In December of 1962, Denver and Marlene decided to have a sale. Someone asked Denver what he was going to do.

He said “I think I would like to farm in the hills.” In early 1963, Denver and Marlene bought a farm on Polsgrove Rd, RR 3, Mount Carroll.

A few months later Mark Allen was born May 2. This was home for the rest of Denver’s life.

Among Denver’s gift and talents, he had a knack for fixing and re-fixing machinery that was worn out. He loved the challenge of buying a piece of machinery that had seen it’s better days, and then making it work again. He rebuilt manure spreaders, made a hay conveyor for the barn, made a horse power, and created a one row horse drawn ground driven corn picker!

These are just small samples of the things Denver created and made on the farm.

When Denver moved to Polsgrove there always had to be horses on the farm. From hauling manure, sewing oats, planting corn, cultivating corn, mowing hay, raking hay, cutting corn off with the corn binder, to hauling in and unloading hay, oats and corn with the horses. Horses were always at work on the farm.

Denver also drove a rendering truck, a job he had for almost 35 years.

In the early 1980’s, Denver started to fulfill a lifelong dream raising registered blonde Belgians to work on the farm and to show. He was able to acquire and

raise some colts, enough to participate in most of the hitch classes with a hitch wagon he made himself out of a walnut log off the farm.

This show wagon and the farm became known as Woodland Hills Farm.

He absolutely loved showing his horses in the 3 county fairs; Carroll, Boone and Whiteside.

Although Denver had a deep love of the farm and horses, he was just as deeply devoted, more so, to his family.

Denver and Marlene went their separate ways in 1969. But their love for their children never wavered.

As children we always had more than enough to get by on. Our father took on the responsibility of raising 2 young children as a single parent. He never complained, as always took on the responsibility head on. His reprimands were straight to the point and then moved on in love.

He never held anything against us and was there to shape us into our own passions in life. Then he liked to take a step back and watch and marvel at how his daughter and son grew into adulthood.

Denver was the anchor that Cindy and Mark could always rely on.

Denver had a special way of seeing people for who they are and where they’re at and loving them the same way. This was evident when spouses came along.

Cindy married John Peterson, and Mark married Teresa Bellich. The grandchildren were enduring to his heart.

Hannah, he claimed got all of her book smarts from him.

How, we do not know. Denver was barely a “C” student in high school, that it is putting it modestly. Hannah was valedictorian of Sycamore high. She then went on to receive a doctorate degree.

He was very proud of her and her accomplishments. Karissa was in choir in high school and Grandpa loved going to see her perform whenever he could.

He told her his favorite song they sang was Chapel of Love. Karissa married Todd Matteson and together they brought Denver a great grandchild, Parker. When they came into the room as a family, you could see the light in his eyes.

Of course, Parker stole the show.

Parker hardly ever fussed and Denver was always amazed at that. Eli had his own special gifts as well, Eli started playing the guitar and going to open mic’s at Charlie’s II in Mount Carroll.

Of all things, Eli loved old country music. Denver marveled at Eli how fast he could pick songs up by ear and play

and sing them.

They collaborated on writing two songs together, although it was really special when together they would sing “I Saw The Light” by Hank Williams.

All that is written is really great, but the greatest thing of all is that Denver Conrad Traum’s name is written in God’s Book of Life. He believed that Jesus died on the cross for his sins. This was most evident, because when asked to give scripture verses at his mother’s funeral, John 3:16 was first given. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life.”

After a short illness, Denver went home to be with his Savior March 29, 2020.

Denver’s life touched many family and friends. He will be dearly missed by one sister, Marlyn (Traum) Gleim, Sterling; two children Cindy (John) Peterson Sycamore; Mark (Teresa) Traum Mt. Carroll, 3 grandchildren, Hannah Peterson Boston, Massachusetts; Karissa (Todd) Matteson, Durand, and Eli Traum, Mount Carroll; one great-grandson Parker Matteson; and many extended family members.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family strongly requests donations be made to Covid-19 research Gates Foundation, Gates Philanthropy Partners, P.O. Box 23350, Seattle, Washington 98102.

A memorial/celebration service will be held at a later date.

ROSEMARIE KIRWAN MOUNT CARROLL – Rosemarie Kirwan, 71, of Mount Carroll, passed away on March 30, 2020 at home.

She was born on March 8, 1949 in Chicago, to Herman and Laura Siepman.

She married Edward Kirwan on Nov. 15, 1969.

She was a retired legal secretary.

She was a member of the Illinois Downstreamers, Volo Bog, and two recorder groups, as well as being an avid gardener, canoeist, birder, dog agility, and quilter.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Kirwan; daughter, Lorrie (Rick) Ciccotosto; son, Eric (Katie) Kirwan; sister, Joan Penn; brother, Ron (Dorothy) Siepman, sisters-in-law Karen (Greg) Bazilewich and Judy (George) LaGrow; grandsons, Bruce and Ben Ciccotosto and Lucas Kirwan; and several nieces and nephews.

A family and friends remembrance will be announced on a later date.

OBITUARIES LAKE CARROLL/SHANNON – Donald “Butch” Mantzke just hit a fairway wood to the green, for a birdie putt, after a long straight drive.

At the age of 88, and after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s, Don passed into the arms of his Lord, with his loving family by his side on Sunday, March 29, 2020.

He was a genuine, loving and dedicated Grandfather, Father, and Husband, who enjoyed sharing his sense of humor and passion for life.

Don was born in a farm house near Winslow on Sept. 30, 1931, the son of John and Gladys (Meacham) Mantzke.

He grew up knowing the value of a penny and lived an idyllic childhood in Lena, playing baseball with his friends and helping his dad as he operated a local tavern called the Lena Tavern.

Don is a 1951 graduate of the Lena High School. Don served his country in the US Army during the Korean War with the 398th Engineering Battalion based out of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

He went on to graduate from Carthage College in 1957.

On April 1, 1961, Donald married the love of his life, Judith Kunkle in Rockford.

They raised two children and celebrated almost 60 years of marriage.

Don was a dedicated school teacher and administrator for 39 years in the Shannon/Eastland School District.

He was a member of the Shannon American Legion for over 50 years and served as Commander several times.

He served on the Shannon Volunteer Fire Department for 13 years.

Don was a member of Bethel Methodist Church in Shannon most of his life, serving on many committees. He also

ESTON M. PRESTON LANARK – Eston Morton Preston, age 71, of Lanark, died tragically in an automobile accident the morning of March 30, 2020, in Rockford.

Eston was born May 24, 1948, in Morrison, the son of Richard and Phyllis (Nelson) Preston. He attended Mt. Carroll schools, until he was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. Rightfully so, Eston was extremely proud to be a Vietnam Veteran. In light of the current events, we cannot come together as a community to memorialize Eston at the present time. However, we can all honor Eston’s life and military service by thanking a veteran, today, for his or her service to our nation.

Following his service to his country, he farmed as a young man, before finding his true calling, driving semi. He also owned and operated a tree service for a few number of years, with his brother.

A little later in life, Eston married Elsie Sherman, on August 10, 1990. With their combined eight children, they created a family of 10. At the time of his pass-

5 ing, he worked for TR Transfer, based in Stockton, and loved his exceptional working relationship with Greg.

As evident by his career choice, Eston had a passion for driving. One of his favorite ventures was traveling with Elsie and friends.

He enjoyed the great outdoors, spending many hours camping and fishing with his family. Even when he was home, he could often be found tending to, and mowing, the lawn, whether it needed it or not.

Eston will be dearly missed by his wife, Elsie; sons, Samuel (Louanne) Preston, of Lanark, Kenneth (Crystal) Preston, of Shannon, Richard (Christina) Preston, of Shorewood; daughters, Melinda (Steven Hays) Near, of Janesville, Wisconsin, Tanya (Michael) Mitchell, of Rockford, Misty (Tanner) Lindstrom, of Ottawa, and Joni (Eric) Beyer, of Lanark; 16 grandchildren, NaTasha Belander, Kirk Preston, Samantha Stephenson, Dylan Preston, Amanda Near, Travis Near, Marie Preston, Jenna Preston, Hailey Preston, Abbie James, Konnor Kosier, Tycen Lindstrom, Talyn Beyer, Gavyn Beyer, Declyn Beyer, and Emberly Beyer; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ethan (Janet) Preston, of Englewood, FL and Ellza “Dent” Preston, of Kirkland; and numerous extended family members and friends.

DONALD “BUTCH” MANTZKE

served on the Carroll County Board for many years, and the Cherry Grove Shannon Township Board and was Township Clerk for over 25 years.

Don loved, and was loved, by his family, friends and thousands of students whose lives he helped develop over the years.

He had a huge heart and would often share his wisdom through songs or sayings that were memorable. He was a sports enthusiast, both as a participant and coach, winning the first Eastland Basketball Girls Regional in 1990.

He never missed his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, including baseball, football, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball, and was proudest to watch as Eastland, and his grandkids participated on several winning teams.

In his younger years he enjoyed bowling. When he wasn’t coaching, teaching, or rooting on a sports team, Don could be found teaching his grandchildren how to golf, fish, or just mowing the lawn.

He loved golfing with friends and enjoyed shooting a 69 on his 69th birthday, and has since golfed his age many times. Don would say, “There is always time for a game of Euchre.” He loved playing cards with family and his men’s poker group.

Don will be dearly missed by his wife, Judith of Lake Carroll; his son, David (Julie) Mantzke of Somonauk; his daughter, Amy (Matthew) Jones of Lake Carroll; six grandchildren, Doris, Nelson and Grant Mantzke, Adam (Elizabeth) Young, Austin Young and Gabrielle Snyder; his first great-grandchild on-the-way; and his sister, Kathryne “Kate” Warthen of Lena.

Don is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jeanne.

A private family service was held Friday, April 3, at Bethel Methodist Church in Shannon. Burial was at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Freeport with military rites.

• TIGER Continued from Page 3 in animals. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which confirmed Nadia’s test result at its veterinary lab, says there are no known cases of the virus in U.S. pets or livestock.

“There doesn’t appear to be, at this time, any evidence that suggests that the animals can spread the virus to people or that they can be a source of the infection in the United States,” Dr. Jane Rooney, a veterinarian and a USDA official, said in an interview.

The USDA said Sunday it’s not recommending routine coronavirus testing of animals, in zoos or elsewhere, or of zoo employees. Still, Rooney said a small number of animals in the U.S. have been tested through the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories, and all those tests came back negative except Nadia’s.

The coronavirus outbreaks around the world are driven by person-to-person transmission, experts say.

There have been a handful of reports outside the U.S. of pet dogs or cats becoming infected after close contact with contagious people, including a Hong Kong dog that tested positive for a low level of the pathogen in February and early March. Hong Kong agriculture authorities concluded that pet dogs and cats couldn’t pass the virus to human beings but could test positive if exposed by their owners.

Some researchers have been trying to understand the susceptibility of different animal species to the virus, and to determine how it spreads among animals, according to the Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health.

The American Veterinary Medical Association and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been recommending that out of an abundance of caution, people ill with the coronavirus should limit contact with animals — advice that the veterinary group reiterated after learning of the tiger’s test result.

In general, the CDC also advises people to wash their hands after handling animals and do other things to keep pets and their homes clean.

At the Bronx Zoo, Nadia, her sister Azul, two Amur tigers and three African lions developed dry coughs, and some of the cats exhibited some wheezing and loss of appetite, said Dr. Paul Calle, the zoo’s chief veterinarian.

The staff figured there could be a relatively routine explanation for the cats’ symptoms but tested Nadia for coronavirus out of “due diligence and an abundance of caution,” Breheny said. Only Nadia was tested because it takes anesthesia to get a sample from a big cat, and she had already been knocked out to be examined.

The seven sickened cats live in two areas at the zoo, and the animals had contact with the same worker, who is doing OK, zoo officials said. They said there are no signs

They won’t be able to get out of the truck because of precautions against the virus, and visits will be dependent on volunteer staffing available.

As I type this we are just finding out that the Shelter in Place will remain until the end of April.

While working from home, I have been incorporating a lot baking which is what I do while bored. I made homemade marshmallows which was a bucket list item I had.

I am also a huge coconut fan and made a couple pies, some banana bread, and other odds and ends.

I think our dog is going to be very confused when we get back to normal life. She is enjoying having the company at home.

Economic hit from COVID-19 could stall rebound from wet 2019

BY BEN ORNER Capitol News Illinois SPRINGFIELD – Despite projected increases in corn and soybean plantings this year after a disastrous 2019 planting season, farmers are gripped by uncertainty surrounding spring weather and the economic downturn from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its annual prospective plantings report on last week, which shows how many acres farmers of major crops intend to plant this spring.

Illinois farmers are expected to plant 11.3 million acres of corn and 10.5 million acres of soybeans this planting season, according to the report.

If all expected acreage is planted, that would be an increase of 8 percent for corn and 6 percent for soybeans over last year, when record precipitation from January to June decreased plantings and dropped production by 18 percent for corn and 20 percent for soybeans.

Although acreage projections for 2020 “are probably in the ballpark,” said Mark Tuttle, president of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau, any rebound from last year could be stifled by the economic shock caused

by COVID-19.

“The price of corn and beans are very poor right now,” said Tuttle, who grows about 900 acres of the two

As the COVID-19 pandemic drives down the price of oil, gasoline prices across the country have plummeted, with many Illinois pumps below $2 per gallon. That has stalled production of ethanol, a gasoline alternative made from corn. Some ethanol plants have idled while being pushed toward unprofitability.

“When a lot of these acres were bid for, and talked about a month

ago, none of this was foreseen at that time,” Tuttle said, adding that 40 percent of U.S. corn production is used for ethanol.

The economic hit could be lessened, Tuttle said, by exporting more corn, feeding more to livestock or switching some soybean acreage to corn, but that will not offset all damage.

“I think the farmers will plant their crops without a problem, we

always do,” he added. “It’s a matter of marketing on the other end of this crop is going to be tough. It’s going to be tough to make money.”

Increasing uncertainty is a wetter-than-normal spring forecasted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. NOAA scientists currently predict April through June will be rainier than
